A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week That True Fitness has pulled a California Wow True Fitness has dropped its last remaining Bangkok gym while giving a collective¯\_(ツ)_/¯ to all its members, some of whom are signed up for the next five years. The news comes after the Singaporean chain closed its CentralWorld branch last year with zero warning and no refunds for the people who’d just signed up for new memberships. That Seenspace is set to completely change Before the Commons, there was this place called Seenspace. It had concrete walkways, communal courtyard seating and lots of craft beer. Also turns out, it never actually went anywhere—we did. Now though its last remaining businesses are set to give up the ghost in order to make way for we-don’t-know-what. First out the gates will be Brew with a closing bash on Jun 23. That The Chainsmokers will play in Bangkok American DJs/music producers Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall have confirmed they’ll be playing in Bangkok on Sep 15, 2017 at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani as part of Chainsmokers’ “Memories... Do Not Open” Asia Tour 2017. That’s one more notch on Bangkok’s bedpost of huge live acts that played in 2017. Which brings us onto... That Harry Styles will play in Bangkok The old One Direction posterboy is making his first solo tour around the world to promote himself as the newly minted Harry Styles 2.0, a gravel-voiced 70s soft-rock throwback with dodgy taste in baby blue velvet suits. Catch him at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani on May 7, 2018—that’s if you were ready with your credit card when tix went on sale this morning (Jun 16). That you can now drink a boozy interpretation of Chao Phraya river water Changwon Express, Asoke’s specialty Thai craft beer bar and Korean-Mexican fusion restaurant (a description so hipster it never gets old), has launched its second Bangkokthemed craft beer. This one’s called the Chao Phraya stout and tastes like coffee and chocolate. It also looks like it something scooped from a khlong.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Orange wine
Not: Negronis
Orange wine is white wine made using the techniques of red wine. Or the other way round. Whatever it is, it’s what you’re supposed to be drinking right now, and About Eatery is hosting a whole week dedicated to the stuff. That’s if the outgoing Negroni Week hasn’t put you off booze for life.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Beef soup
Not: Avo toast
Things in Bangkok’s Old Town are beginning to feel a whole lot like Phrom Phong thanks to new cafes specializing in avocado toast and butterfly pea lattes. It all makes us very thankful for a guy named Chanyanpat Tiveschayun, who’s taken the old beef soup recipe of his grandfather’s deceased Chinatown restaurant and placed it in a renovated shop-house that’s modern yet in keeping with the neighborhood (see goo.gl/rta/0MZ).
Hot: Art capital
Not: Food capital
Congratulations, Bangkok. You successfully made yourself a world finedining capital up there with Paris and Tokyo. Now it’s time to move on and focus on the next tourism campaign: art. As well as not one but two Bangkok Biennales (great communication, guys), we’re also getting a private gallery out on Ramkamhaeng courtesy of Petch of Bangkok University and crazy hair fame. Watch out Singapore.
Hot: Intrusive Advertising
Not: Social Media
The government has no shortage of plans to fund the record deficit of its new budget. Facebook will be fined if it doesn’t take content down fast enough; Youtube and Line will be taxed for their Thai revenues. And the BTS has found one more way to annoy us: fake station signs branded to the colors and logo of Oppo (in green) or 11st (in red).
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
Construction on the junta’s 14-kilometer river promenade has yet to get started despite claims at the end of 2016 that it would be underway by January this year. Facing fierce protest, the promenade’s delay has bought time for civic groups such as Friends of the River, which at the end of May submitted a court injunction against the controversial project for violating maritime planning laws. It’s a last-ditch attempt to halt what many see as a disaster for Bangkok both environmentally and historically. Here, we chat to Paranee Sawasdirak, an independent scholar on urban planning and co-founder of the Friends of the River group, about the river promenade’s current status and whether they really have any hope to end it. What’s the latest information you’ve received from the government on the promenade’s progress? We’ve heard nothing new. Nothing at all. We’ve sent letters out to every department that relates to environment, society, urban planning and culture, but they all send the same replies back that contain no information and do not relate to what we’ve asked. Tell me about the court injunction— what does it mean and what are your hopes for success? It’s still in progress and can’t be revealed to the public yet. However, if this tactic brings us nowhere, we will still try negotiating. We will continue doing whatever we can to protect the community and the river. When do you think construction will start? The river walk is under the responsibility of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Right now they already have the money for the project. However, they cannot spend it until they host an auction to find the right construction company. Right now, the auction has not started, so therefore there is no construction.
Have you at least seen the government’s final plans for the promenade? The BMA did show us their initial master plan, but then the plan was changed and split into two. So far, we still haven’t seen any of these changes. So now we have absolutely no idea what this river walk is going to be like. What is Friends of the River’s next move? Right now, we have no intention of encouraging or supporting any protests. We are doing everything in a nonviolent way. We have already submitted our new letters to the government. We want them to carry out the impact analysis survey and show us the master plan. We want them to reconsider this project. The budget they have right now can be used in a way that will be good for both the communities and tourism, without harm to the environment. We want to negotiate and come to a fair compromise. For anyone unfamiliar with the government’s river promenade, can you explain why you object to it so strongly? The impact of this project will be felt by both locals and tourism. People have been living on the river banks
for generations. At the moment, the BMA is trying to move people out of the area in order to clear up the banks. I understand that settling down in the actual area is against the law; however, if that’s the main issue, the BMA or the government could have done something long before now. Villagers will now have to find new homes, and those whose livelihoods depend on the river—like fishermen—will have to completely transform their way of life. Tourist businesses like hotels and restaurants aren’t thrilled with this project either, since the height of this river walk will ruin their view. How would you like the money to be spent instead? The BMA can use the budget to improve the life of people in that area, instead of building a walkway that will obscure the scenery. They could use that money to build more roads, a bicycle lane, bicycle parking spaces, or playgrounds for villagers. This would end up profiting both locals and tourists in the long run, since tourists want to see the local lifestyle. The beauty of the river is more than just the water; it includes the people and communities that live along the river. Interview by Napaphat Boonyadhammakul and Pavisporn Potchana

Indie BKK Meet the people staging Bangkok’s best alternative music gigs, and find out where top live bands play on the regular. By Bonnie Sananvatananont and Choltanutkun Tun-Atiruj
S
o far, 2017 has been an amazing year for live indie music in Bangkok. Thanks to new concert organizers and live music venues, we’ve welcomed bands from Honne to Cigarettes after Sex, many of which have sold out within the hour—giving mainstream counterparts a run for their money. So why now and where is the indie concert scene headed? Here, we talk to three local organizers to get their insights:
blogs and parties — all things that Thailand didn’t have. Photo by Bemanoy
What are the main factors contributing to the rise of indie music in Bangkok? Py: 1) Social awareness via education, networking and connections; 2) An economy that will enable musicians to survive and get income from making music; and 3) Support from the government, which can be quite difficult since the government isn’t always accessible.
Piyapong “Py” Muenprasertdee, co-founder of Fungjai Sarun "Top" Pinayrat came up with Fungjai in 2014 when he felt a Spotify-shaped hole in the Thai musice scene. In league with Piyapong “Py” Muenprasertdee, the pair have constantly organized gigs and talks from names like Chanond Yodhong (art director of Genie Records at GMM Grammy) and Tohphong Chantabuppha from pop band Scrubb. His latest project, "Ma La Ma," helps fund local musicians. How did your company form and what does it want to achieve? Py: Fungjai was founded by Sarun “Top” Pinyarat [co-founder and art director at Fuum! communication design studio] in early 2014 before I joined him in mid-2014. Top lived overseas before and has always been a fan of indie music. As an intern in Boston before moving back to Bangkok, I used to help create electronic press kits for artists. I got to learn a lot about their indie music scene culture, and how they had so many meet-ups,
ing them in ourselves. Recently, indie music in Bangkok has boomed.
What are the main struggles indie concert organizers face?
What do you think are the main factors contributing to the rise of indie music in Bangkok?
Py: The most difficult thing is money: even if the show is sold out, the organizer will just break even or lose a bit of profit, which is why we need sponsors. Sponsors are not easy to get if you’re a no-name or someone completely new to the scene with no success stories.
It’s easier for people to discover music now. With the advent of Apple music and YouTube, more and more people can find artists who are similar to their favorite bands. Another reason is simply a change in culture. The new generation really likes going to concerts.
What do you hope to see BKK’s indie music scene achieve in the future? Py: I want foreigners to see Thailand as a music destination like Austin, Melbourne or Liverpool. Can you give us a hint on which bands you want/hope to bring to BKK in the near future? Py: None. Why do international bands tend to“skip” Bangkok and just visit neighbouring countries? Py: Maybe because of our history. Organizers have tried to bring international bands over and couldn’t sell enough tickets, so they get scared of bringing someone over.
Kiratra “Ki” Promsaka, founder of “Have You Heard?” Former member of the pop duo Niece and daughter of veteran rocker Keo Carabao, Kiratra teamed up with the lead vocalist of local indie band Yellow Fang, Pimporn Metchanun, and their mutual friend Korami Vairasthira in 2011 to found Have You Heard? Since then, they've grown it into Bangkok's most well-respected indie concert promoter, bringing in names including The Radio Dept, Phoenix and Blood Orange. How did your company form and what does it want to achieve? It was formed out of our passion for live music. Back then, there was no promoter in Thailand who brought in bands that we wanted to see, so we decided to start bring-
What are the main struggles that indie concert organizers in Bangkok face? The unstable political situation and the lack of decent venues. What do you hope to see BKK’s indie music scene achieve in the future? I hope to see it keep growing so that Bangkok becomes a “must-stop” for every band when they come to Asia. Tell us how you choose which bands to bring in? Before it was our friends or our own preferences, but now we try to get something for everyone and every generation.
What's next in 2017?

Places to get your live indie fix in Bangkok
Kawee “May” Soontornwan, founder of “Medium Rare” Kawee “May” Soontornwan’s Medium Rare project made Live RCA one of Bangkok’s top venues for live music thanks to acts like Crystal Castles, FKJ, Lucy Rose and Ryan Hemsworth. Sadly it’ll be closing at the end of this month, but that won’t stop May from searching for other venues to host international bands that he selects for being indie, but not so underground the Thai market hasn’t heard of them—hence the name, Medium Rare. How did your company form and what are the main things it wants to achieve? May: My partner worked at Live RCA, where the original promoter only focused on electronic music DJs. I had experience in organizing small live music events, so I took over that job. What are the main struggles indie concert organizers face? May: Sometimes when I bring a relatively rare artist over, the audience is not very open-minded. When they don’t know the artist, they won’t consider checking the new music out. What do you hope to see BKK’s indie music scene achieve in the future? May: If you look at the indie music scene around Southeast Asia, other countries’ artists are trying to push their music into the international market. We should try to push our indie music out too. The indie musicians do have their international followers, but they are very niche. I used to follow the local indie scene but now I’m grown up and feel like I can’t get my

head around it. The music is not internationally focused. Of course there are some bands who have played overseas but they just tour and are not right for the market. Are you implying that the local indie musicians need to adjust their style to fit in the international market? May: Yes, I am. But surely as artists they should stay true to their sound rather than just do what they think is commercial? May: I think it’s important that what you love also makes you money and you can survive on it. Otherwise, the lack of income will catch up with you. You’ll be forced to do something else and give up on your dreams. Can you give us a hint which bands you hope to bring to BKK in the near future? May: We are in the middle of dealing with one band who are touring around here in August. And maybe another artist who has already been to Bangkok but is coming back again to do something special. Why do international bands tend to “skip” Bangkok and just visit neighboring countries? May: It’s business. Some festivals have a deal with the artists where they are not allowed to play at any nearby countries, because the festival organizers are trying to draw audiences from those countries to their festival. However, in general, our country doesn’t have a big enough scene that would allow us to feel confident we’d sell enough tickets no matter who is playing. Tell us how you choose your bands? May: I usually choose a band that is currently touring around Thailand because that increases the chance of booking them. After that, we think of bands who are touring around the region, and we decide which band to book based on the fanbase in Thailand.

here’s no denying the frantic energy of Ratchada. In the past couple years, it has emerged as Bangkok’s new central business district, welcoming the regional headquarters of some of the world’s biggest global corporations. To live in the heart of the action yet protected from the hustle, look no further than Major Development’s new low-rise condominium, MAESTRO 19 RATCHADA 19-VIPHA. The five-rai project exudes exclusivity and refinement. But its central location—650 meters from MRT Ratchadapisek, just between Chatuchak/Lad Prao and the Ratchada business district—is plugged straight into the most exciting part of Bangkok and the one with the fastest growing property prices. It is also one of the few pet-friendly condominiums in the city, allowing you to live the life you desire. Under the concept of “Industrial Elegance,” the design of MAESTRO 19 RATCHADA 19-VIPHA borrows from the alluring style of the early industrial era. The result is an enduring classicism with an urban edge evoking the finest buildings of 1930s New York
or London: soaring factory-style windows, monochrome chevron floorings, and slabs of dark marble. This can all be enjoyed in MAESTRO 19 RATCHADA 19-VIPHA’s generous lounges and club spaces that extend your residence’s confines to a whole world of refined living. With four buildings carefully positioned for ideal air circulation and light conditions, MAESTRO 19 RATCHADA 19-VIPHA is a veritable oasis. Additional facilities include a co-working space, library, fitness center, yoga terrace area, steam rooms and saunas, as well as a 25-meter swimming pool, barbecue decks on all four residential buildings, jogging track, large retreat garden, courtyard, and a pet-friendly area. Step inside your room, a place that truly feels like home, for total privacy and clever design features that blend style and function. Hybrid sliding doors allow residents to reconfigure their room according to its usage, a creative and modular approach to living that makes full use of your space.

Transported 700km from Jiangxi, they now sit in a 1,000-year-old camphor forest just outside downtown Shanghai, where Aman has transformed them into just 26 villas and suites. Thick stone walls give way to interiors of warm bamboo, each with its own private courtyard and fireplace, while the central Nan Shufang building lets you try out ancient Chinese crafts. Learn the art of the tea ceremony and how to write calligraphy before taking a walk around the stunning lakes. Or just wake late and check into the Aman spa. The resort is only set to open in October so no word on rates yet, but it won’t be cheap. Nights at Beijing’s Aman Summer Palace start from around B16,000.

This intriguing multi-label menswear store is the latest project under the same roof as Bangkok Screening Room’s amazing indie cinema, run by one of the co-founders of Sukhumvit's Chinese-themed bar Dim Dim. The raw, minimal interior displays niche brands drawn from around the world, like Goetze from Berlin, Document from Seoul and Mfpen from Copenhagen. Grab a cool striped long-sleeve shirt like Goetze’s at B7,300, a perfect-for-Bangkok indigo silk jacket by Document (B15,900) or a simple Winona T-shirt (B2,200) from Idea.
The made-to-measure menswear shop specializes in classic Italian cutting. Strutting lapels, floppy hemmed pants and relaxed structures give the suits of Japanese native Tatsura Iwashita a look of classic elegance. With mixed-wool suits starting from B12,000, his pricing also belies the store’s upmarket, polished appearance. Interior architects PHTAA Living Design worked their magic over the ground floor of a minute building tucked down Thonglor Soi 20, giving it a look which, like the suits, shirts and ties (B1,2001,300) on sale here, is at once modern yet timeless.
Guys looking for that perfect, Pinterest-worthy collar roll on their shirts should be very excited about Ari’s new pop-up. Kamakura is a Japanese shirtmaker whose reputation stretches to New York’s Madison Avenue. Specializing in a relaxed, Ivy League kind of style, these guys make their shirts out of 100-percent cotton and linen while keeping their prices realistic. We’re talking B2,950-B3,250 for anything.

SUNDAYS AT MAGGIE CHOO’S
G.O.D. is closed. But that doesn’t mean the rest of Bangkok’s gay scene isn’t still buzzing. Here are the best bars in town. By Kawee Jarach
DJ Station
Evoking colonial outposts, the Pax Britannica of Queen Victoria, the decadence of opium dens and steamy exoticism, this bewitching bar hosts its weekly gay night every Sunday when topless hunks with rock-hard six-packs from 7:30pm replace the beautiful ladies in cheongsam dresses on the swings. Apart from sipping cocktails and mingling with the crowd, expect to laugh all night long when local drag sensation Pangina Heals takes the stage. U/F, Novotel Silom, 320 Silom Rd., 091-7722144. Open 7:30pm-2am
XY PARTY EVERY THURSDAY AT CE LA VI
DJ Station The grand dame of gay clubbing just never seems to get old. Packed to the point of making dancing near impossible on weekends, DJ Station has come to define Thailand’s gay nightlife for many visitors. The place is three stories tall. Most of the dancing takes place on the ground, with some guys going shirtless on stage. On the second floor, things are noticeably more cruise-y and boozy. As for the decor, the dim lighting hides a pretty rundown and barebones setup. Silom Soi 2, 02-266-4029. Open daily 10pm-2am. BTS Sala Daeng
The Stranger Bar and Lounge Tucked inside the vibrant Silom Soi 4, this two-story sit-down bar boasts fun-themed cocktails and attracts a modern, younger gay crowd. Although small in size, the bar is big in personality, with its glittery decor, feisty drink menu and sassy beats.

Telephone Pub One of the oldest pubs in Bangkok that has been operating since 1987 just celebrated their 30th anniversary on June 14, and continues to thrive among other lively gay bars. Named for the telephones that used to connect the tables to each other, they have since been removed from the walls. The interior is decorated and arranged like a classic New York-style bar where you can smoke and drink outside in the front terrace with house music, while the bar & restaurant are upstairs serving both Thai and Western cuisines. The third floor is a karaoke room with a variety of songs in both English and Thai. Parties of any size can also be arranged together with entertainment upon early notice via email.

Fake Club
The Expresso
This legendary gay club made a comeback in 2015 after its original venue closed down. The mega-facelift includes a huge dance floor and worldclass audio equipment. Enter the towering, neon-lit entrance and you’ll be greeted with opulent decor and tacky disco balls. The club has a rotating entertainment lineup that includes a live house band, one-off gigs, male model stage shows and special performances by local artists.
Situated on the opposite side of DJ Station, The Expresso offers easier listening tunes to re-energize yourself before hitting DJ Station. The place often arranges tables for drinking and relaxing before removing them to make a dance floor as the crowds are pouring in fast, especially on the weekends.
222/32, Ratchadaphisek Rd., 081-390-8888. Open daily 9pm-3am
Soi Twilight Located just off of Surawong Road, this notorious street is filled with gay bars and restaurants, the most popular arguably being Classic Boys Club, a go-go bar known for their syncronized swimming shows held in a large tank at 11:30pm and midnight on Sundays. Upon entering the brightly-lit street, you’ll be swarmed by promoters trying to persuade you to enter

Jupiter 2018 Men Club Moved from Soi Twilight to Silom Soi 4, Jupiter 2018 is the reincarnation of Jupiter 2002, and remains consistently popular. The owners decided to build and operate their own place, keeping it as a go-go bar with a sexy guys show, lights, and performances that usually start at 9pm with B250 for a drink.
This classy, ostentatious bar that was known as Ku De Ta (now Ce La Vi) hosts a special XY Party every Thursday night with upbeat music and performances. The performances are highlighted by Bangkok-based DJs like Danny Dee, Gappy, and RitaRita, and Thailand’s fabulous drag queen, Pangina Heals, who keeps the party going from 9pm-3am. OPEN DOOR
Gaa This innovative kitchen backed by Gaggan Anand is all about produce. The buzz: The shophouse opposite Gaggan—where the eponymous chef once told us he’d open a curry house—has become a bright yellow and pink-painted restaurant aiming to make the most of local ingredients and take food to the next level. The decor: You’ll easily spot the restaurant for its bold color scheme and stylish glass facade, through which you can see into the large L-shaped kitchen on the ground floor and the comfortable first-floor dining room. Compared with the pristine white finery of Gaggan, Gaa sports a younger, more relaxing vibe. A tapas bar sits on the left wing of the second floor, where you can enjoy some drinks alongside a la carte snacks.
16
The food: The brainchild of Gaggan’s ex-sous chef, Garima Arora (also an alumni of Noma), Gaa only serves tasting menus (B1,800 for eight courses/B2,400 for 12 courses). Modern techniques meet traditional cooking methods in a sandwich of translucent dehydrated cabbage with roasted bell pepper paste. Simpler-looking items pack no less flavor, like the grilled seasoned baby corn husks with corn milk dip, and the grilled pork ribs, which are marinated with housemade split-pea miso and served with chopped shallots, spring onion and pomegranate seeds. Of course, there are some Thai and Indian influences, too, like the poached grouper, wrapped taco-style with caramelized milk skin and kanom la (a Southern Thai crepe floss dessert). Don’t under-
estimate the actual desserts here, either. The turmeric soft serve in a sesame cone topped with safflower is a treat so delicious it deserves its own stall out front. The drinks: On top of wine and other alcohol, the restaurant also highlights juice-pairing packages, which include freshly-pressed juices and house-made kombucha. Why you should care: Besides the fact that some of the world’s most influential names like Gaggan and Noma are involved in this restaurant, the way this kitchen showcases local products is not only creative, but also meaningful. NEW AND NOTED
In Town A far-flung Ram Intra-based dessert cafe has now come to central Bangkok. The pop-up Apbo Cafe is on the fourth Floor of Siam Paragon (991/1 Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam) through September, serving its signature kakigori (shaved ice), topped with the likes of Japanese purple sweet potato (B195) and mango cheese cake (B195). You can also get the photogenic blueberry cheesecake (B165), served alongside a fluffy blue cotton candy and chocolate mixed berry toast served in a hot pan (B225).
Sea of Plenty Located in Siam Square, Burn Whale (236/6-7 Siam Square Soi 2, Rama 1 Rd.) is a new seafood buffet spot (B799) for fish lovers who don’t want to cook themselves. The owner runs a fishing boat off the coast of Petchaburi which catches nearly everything on the menu.
TABLE TALK This place also serves grilled giant Malaysian prawns, gang kradaan (grilled flathead lobsters), spicy salmon salad, hoy nangrom song krueng (raw oysters topped with spicy Thai herbal sauce) and fried soft-shell crabs.
ONEDAY at a Time
Tapped Out
Located under the same roof as Oneday Pause and Forward hostel and coworking space, the casual dining place serves up comforting bites from breakfast until dinner. Western and fusion food headlines the menu, including quinoa salad with roast pumpkin, leek soup, grilled salmon steak with red curry and rice and spicy carbonara. You can also order up some burgers or calamari and get a good coffee from Casa Lapin x 26.
Silom’s Soi Convent finally has the chilled-out craft beer bar it has been waiting for. Sixteen rotating taps store both Thai and international craft beers at Mash (Soi Convent, 089-692-5666), including the must-try Devanom (brewed by the Ungsriwong brothers who also own Thailand’s first ever hops farm, B210). Burgers, barbecue and bar grub fill the menu, as designed by the CIA grad owners. Don't miss the American burger (B295), a thick brioche bun with a juicy freshly-ground 150g patty, cheddar cheese and crispy bacon. Natcha Sanguankiattichai and Napaphat Boonyadhammakul

Bangkok Bold HHHH Thai. 2/F, Riverside Plaza, Charoen Nakorn Rd., 096-626-4519. Open daily 11am-10pm. B-BB F
After first opening its doors on Phra Athit Road in 2015, cooking schoolslash-chef’s table restaurant Bangkok Bold has since leveraged its growing reputation for stellar Thai cuisine by spinning off this second eatery. The chef dream team of Supanut “Ann” Kanarak, Chortip “Nhoi” Ouypornchaisakul and Piya “Tapooh” Chayapum have created a friendly and accessible mall vibe at their newer a la carte restaurant , while still delivering delicious food. Although located in Thonburi, their place enjoyed good foot traffic during our visit on a Sunday afternoon. Clinton Street Baking Company HHHH G/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd. 02-129-4861. Open daily 8am-10pm. BB-BBB F
If you want to dine at New York’s original branch of Clinton Street, you’ll be waiting up to two hours. When this franchise at Siam Paragon first opened, it too packed in the hungry shoppers. Now though you can walk in even on Saturday morning and secure an Emeco Navy chair in prime view (avoid the dingy upstairs mezzanine) of its full-height windows and tantalizing display of towering cakes and pies. With unlimited coffee refills, 8am opening times and freshly squeezed orange juice, this restaurant shouts “breakfast” loudest of all, which it delivers in Southern U.S.referencing plates of chicken and waffles (B340) and eggs, hash browns and buttermilk biscuit (B340), as well as New York stacks of blueberry pancakes with warm maple butter
(B280/2 pieces, B340/3 pieces). These wobbly, souffle-like creations are awesome— New York mag rated them the best in the Big Apple, and we don’t think anything’s been lost in translation here. The joy of that tart berry compote mixed with the rich, salty-sweet batter makes ordering the stack of three a must. Clinton Street is on top form with anything baked, whether it’s a gooey fudge brownie (B100), crumbling, butterrich biscuit (B120), or the pillow-soft brioche bun to your burger. But at B490, it’s a really expensive burger— even more than you’ll pay at Char, a hotel rooftop restaurant—and let down by beef which is dry and definitely two shades grayer than the medium rare we last requested. We also don’t get the hype about Clinton Street’s buttermilk fried chicken (B420), which, though super crisp, tastes laboriously one-dimensional. Something here just doesn’t hit the guilty pleasure high notes of their sensational skin-on French fries (B90) or swamp-thick chocolate and peanut butter milkshake (B180). Waking early and hitting up Clinton Street for a stack of pancakes or a plate of eggs and ham that doesn’t skimp on the butter makes a damn lot of sense, but at other times of the day, our palate wants food with f lavors that go beyond salt and sugar.

The idea and flavors behind the stir-fried Thai mackerel with acacia, chilies and pork cracklings (B170) are excellent, smartly utilizing the ingredients left over from a shrimp paste meal. But it was all too greasy. And their tom yam kung (B200), despite the fresh shrimp and herbal aroma, was too creamy for us. We’d rather order the gaeng lao (B180), a coconut milk-based version of Isaan’s herbal soup gaeng orm. Top off your experience with an exceptional coconut cake (layers of pandan sponge cake and young coconut cream served in a fresh coconut shell, B150), a balanced affair between rich yet refreshing cream and a fluffy sponge base. Though the venue is a bit out the way and requires traveling across the river, we’d say it’s worth a casual meal on a Sunday.

Its official. Twenty-three-year-old English singer Harry Styles will be making his Bangkok debut on May 7 2018 at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani. Tickets go on sale this Jun 16 via Thaiticketmajor.com, with prices starting at B2,500. And it may well sell out instantly. Harry Styles made a name for himself as part of the hit boy band One Direction, who swept up five Brit Awards and four MTV VIdeo Music Awards thanks to their global hits including "What Makes you Beautiful" and "Steal My Girl." Earlier this year, he went on to launch his solo career with his self-titled debut album which is heavily influenced by 1970s soft rock and a huge step away from his previous work. Some people may even compared his effort to—gasp—the late David Bowie. The hit single, "Sign of the Times," debuted at number one in several countries. Now, he's on his first solo tour around the world to promote the album, along with opening act American all-girl indie rock band Warpaint, who are known for their songs "Beetles" and "New Song."

NEWS Live RCA will close down at the end of June The latest casualty in Bangkok's recent string of nightlife closures is Live RCA, one of Bangkok's biggest venues for fans of indie music and niche DJs. The venue confirmed directly to us that they will close at the end of June. "The rent is simply too high," says the venue's management. "We can't make enough to cover the costs." However, the closure of the nightclub, which only used to operate on nights when they held events, does not mean the end for Live as a Bangkok party organizer. "We will continue with our shows in other venues," they said. "We as a team are not going to stop doing our events." The venue was established in April 2015 and quickly became a home for local pro-

moters and gig organizers to put on events. The space has hosted many indie international artists including Neon Indian, Bondax, Kartell, Darius, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Crystal Castles. Though dates and venues are currently unannouced, Live as a party organizer has some interesting names lined up for the future. Parisian electro DJ FKJ, British singer-songwriter Lucy Rose, and Berlin-based DJ Claptone are all confirmed.
