That 72 Courtyard has a new bao specialist… in place of Little Bao The space that used to be the Hong Kong-born bao specialist at Thonglor’s hottest nightlife mall is back, and still doing bao. Only this time, they come with a Korean theme, alongside bibimbap, arcade-style computer games and tiki cocktails. Beat that for a hipster restaurant format.

That James Blunt is coming to serenade us, again The singer best known for his chart-topping 2004 hit “You’re Beautiful” is set to visit Bangkok for the first time since 2011. But fans will still have to wait a while—until Mar 27, 2018, to be exact—for his show at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani to promote his fifth album, The Afterlove, which will be 12 months old by then.

That Bangkok has a new five-figure omakase restaurant In-the-know foodies are already filling up Instagram with snaps from this city’s latest omakase restaurant where dinner for one costs more than most Bangkokians’ monthly rent. Sushi Niwa sits on Soi Ruamrudee, and is kicking off operations with a month of dinners by Hiroki Nakanoue, of Osaka’s two-starred Sushi Yoshi. Yours for B12,000. That Chiang Mai just welcomed its most serious cocktail bar to date Finally, Chiang Mai’s got itself a serious new cocktail bar. Drinksmith (www.fb.com/drinksmithcnx) takes over a quiet spot on Mahidol Road just outside the Old Town, oozing Parisian charm through its blue walls adorned with square photograph frames, wooden stools and moody lighting. But this being Chiang Mai, they open during the day, too, when they pour lattes as good as the old fashioneds.

That you might have to pay more for electricity at night Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission has announced that it’s eyeing up plans to make you cough up more for using electricity at night—and by “night,” they mean during the hours when you’re at home using electricity. The logic is that the more people who are using electricity, the more expensive it becomes for them to produce it. No news on what the increase might be, but there’s a chance it’ll be effective by next year.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Gudak

Not: Instagram

Gudak lets you turn your B27,000 iPhone into a B30 disposable camera— and it’s hot. Hipsters Bangkok-wide are downloading an app which allowsthem take 24 terrible-quality photos with their phone then makes them wait seven days before actually being able to view any of them. It costs B35, but that’s a small price to pay for more Instagram likes.

NEWS The Eviction of Chao Phraya Riverside Communities has Begun

Hot: Transgenders in Not: Transgenders in the U.S. Thailand There’s only one thing that can make Thailand’s junta regime look progressive, and that’s the Trump administration. As this country finally moves to allow Thais to choose their gender, the U.S. has done the opposite for existing legislation on transgender people serving in the military. Next stop: democracy.

Hot: Partying

Not: Staying in

You may not be able to post photos with beer on Facebook, and police raids might mean that your favorite local is shut up by midnight, but nightlife’s still not dead in this town. We’ve rounded up the very best Bangkok night spots that are still alive and kicking (see page 6)—and don’t believe everything we say about their closing times ;)

Hot: Spanish food

Not: Spanish booze

Is it just us, or has anyone else eaten more paella over the last few months in Bangkok than the past 10 years combined? And the wave of Spanish restaurants didn’t end at the arrival of Arroz and return of Taburete. Places like Nan Charcoal Grill are going region-specific (Basque country, to be precise), while El Tapeo on Thonglor is the sister restaurant of a joint in Madrid. It’s just too bad that last time we drank two pitchers of Sangria we were still sober.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Four months after the BMA’s definitive verdict that it would be forging ahead with the Chao Phraya River Promenade, which will see a 14-kilometer (seven kilometers on each side) stretch of the river turned into a cycle lane, public walkway and riverside landmark, the clearance of the historic communities living along the riverbank is underway. By the end of July, the BMA expects to demolish 14 communities, with work already underway. So far, five communities (Pak Klong Bang Khen Mai, Wat Soi Thong, Kiek Kai Pier, Khiew Khai Ka and Wat Chat Kaew Chongkolnee) have been cleared, their homes destroyed and residents relocated to new accommodation which some are already complaining falls below livable standards. On Jul 21, we visited Wat Soi Thong and Kiek Kai Pier communities and spoke to their residents. “It’s heartbreaking for us to see our house being torn down,” said Prakij Thamniam, 56, from Wat Soi Thong, whose family has lived along the river in the same home for four generations. “We totally understand that it’s illegal to live in this area so we have never planned to protest or anything. Still, my family has lived in this house for 100 years. It’s such a huge goodbye for us.” Others showed similar resignation to the BMA’s decision, accepting that their homes along the river were never legally recognized. “I’m

just an ordinary poor citizen. What can I do?” said Visutr Nasawang, 66, from the Wat Soi Thong community. “Fighting with the government is impossible because I know that it’s my fault to live here. “The house was here long before I was born and now I’m in my 50s. I rent this land from the Soi Thong temple but now it has become the government’s land. I don’t know exactly what happened but I only have two choices now—either see the house gone without getting anything at all or leave with the compensation.” The government has arranged relocation accommodaton for the five communities at the Kiek Kai Flats, not far from Kiek Kai Pier. The old, five-story building belongs to the military and sits on Treasury Department land. However, many residents we spoke to complained of poor conditions within the building, and a lack of facilities, even requiring residents to buy their own transformers if they want electricity. “I just couldn’t believe that, despite the B1,001 rent that I have to pay monthly, I’ll also have to pay B27,000 room fee for a space that has broken bathroom doors and windows,” said Sunisa Khetgulee, a resident from the Kiek Kai Pier community. “I don’t feel safe at all. Moreover, there’s no elevator and I’m a 72 year-old woman living on the fifth floor with my daughter.”

Her daughter, Supharat Pothisuwan, said that the eviction has also had a strain on their livelihood: “I used to own a restaurant by my house and now that’s gone. My only income has gone forever and we are running out of savings. We have to wait for the government to pay us the compensation this Jul 26, from which the government will deduct around B30,000 as the moving-in fee [B27,000] and the contract fee [B3,000].” For two-and-a-half years, the Chao Phraya River Promenade project has been headline news for all the wrong reasons. It’s most vocal critic has been a group called Friends of the River, which has campaigned strongly against the promenade on environmental grounds and a lack of communication with the general public over how they would like riverside land to be utilized. Defending the promenade, Antika Sawasri, a spokesperson from Chao Phraya for All (CPA), the design and environmental assessment team led by King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), told us in Oct 2016: “Our study found out that the promenade won’t affect people that much. You can’t view the Chao Phraya romantically anymore. People don’t wake up and take a bath or paddle their boat in the river these days. We should have more contemporary ways for people to use the Chao Phraya.”Neon Boonyadhammakul

The New Nightlife Order Bangkok's after-hours drinking scene has been shaken up by police raids and closures. But there are still plenty of spots to party. Here’s where. By BK Staff

HIP-HOP Blaq Lyte Why you go there: Because you know there’s a life to hip-hop after 2008, and you’re fed up with the techno playing in every other club in town. How it looks: Like the old Badmotel has been taken over by Millennial squatters for a couple months. There are neon lights, hologram stickers, random holes in the walls, Sharpie scribblings and a DJ booth dropped at random in the middle of it all. What you dance to: The same Drake and Kendrick Lamar beats as at Sugar (see below), but without the fights between customers. Who you wind up in bed with: A 23-year-old whose hair shows the remains of about six different dip dyes—but damn do they know some turnt sportswear. Beers start at: B200 Whiskey soda starts at: B250 2/F, Badmotel, 331/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 098-253-9356. Open Tue-Sun 9pm-2am

Sugar

What you dance to: Gangsta hip-hop from ASAP Rocky to old Jay-Z. Who you wind up in bed with: No telling. You’ve always been too drunk to remember. Beers start at: B190 Whiskey soda starts at: B200 37 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 061-391-3111. Open daily 10pm-late

Sway Why you go there: Because the “urban eatery” tagline hasn’t been true in years. Ever since Thonglor’s party crowd got wind of this place’s super-late hours, it’s basically been a mini nightclub disguised as a “chill chill” bar. How it looks: The massive central bar reminds you of its early aspirations as a craft beer spot, though these days you’re more likely to see the industrial, riveted steel tables taken over by spirit bottles and mixers, while the back of the bar gets down to pumping beats. What you dance to: Urban music from the early 2000s, along with R&B, hip-hop, trap and the latest EDM.

Why you go there: You’re drunk and in the mood for some late-night, straight-up “hood” rap—and maybe to see a drunk fight or two between random strangers.

Who you wind up in bed with: Baby-faced boys who drive Mercedes and girls in foundation two shades lighter than their skin.

How it looks: Coyote dancers, confetti, dudes in snapbacks, way too many floors, raw concrete, chicken wire… that’s all we can remember, it’s kind of a blur.

Why you go there: You’re aware there's a world of music outside of house and EDM, or WTF is packed with too many people you want to avoid.

Why you go there: You want to hang out on Sukhumvit Soi 11, but also want to keep it classy. Or at least pretend to, while drunkenly salsa-ing to cheesey South American beats.

How it looks: On a good night you won’t be able to see what’s in front of you, but you’ll feel the good vibrations of the massive sound system.

How it looks: It’s supposed to bring you back to Cuba in the 1940s, with crumbling plasterwork, faded colonial shutters and a massive, wood-paneled back bar.

What you dance to: Global grooves, from luk thung and molam to some limited-run psychedelic Turkish 7-inch DJ Maft Sai brought back from his travels. Shazam is no help in here.

What you dance to: Latin music. The people who can salsa properly ensure the rest of us get shoved to the side in a circle while watching them throw each other around.

Who you wind up in bed with: A tourist in a tank top and elephant pants.

Who you wind up in bed with: If you can salsa dance, someone else who can salsa dance. If you can’t, tough luck.

POP Club SX Why you go there: Because you’re a sucker for their private Hummer service, if you’ve got more baht than sense. You and the lads want to let off some steam at the end of the week, but you don’t want to go too low-brow (or too far from the action of a certain red-light district). How it looks: Like Las Vegas meets Ratchada: red velvet, gold trimmings, Victorian artworks and burlesque dancers. There’s a small dance floor with a disco ball and a petite balcony given some edge by funky street art.

Ce La Vie

What you dance to: ‘80s and ‘90s chart fodder like Rick Astley and M People played with not an iota of irony. Who you wind up in bed with: Definitely not one of the coquettish dancers. It’s not that kind of place, guv. Beers start at: B200 Whiskey soda starts at: B350 6/F, Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit Hotel, 30 Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-171-5299. Open daily 8pm-late

Ce La Vi Why you go there: It’s ladies' night and you’re making the most out of the free-flow bubbly. Actually, you may not even end up there at all. It depends if you impress the assho—we mean, security guys downstairs.

Club SX

How it looks: A glamorous, double-height strip of wood panels and mood lighting that pokes a middle finger at the raw-industrial trend. What you dance to: Show off your skills to all the Met 107 FM top 30 hits, mixed with failproof classics like “Single ladies, I can't hear you, make some noise!” DND

Sing Sing

Who you wind up in bed with: Total gym bros or past-middle-aged men with something thick in their pants—their wallet. Beers start at: B180 Whiskey soda starts at: B240 39/F, Sathorn Square Complex, 98 Sathorn Rd., 02-108-2000. Open Tue-Sat 6pm-2am

DND Why you go there: There’s a Thai pop band playing whose name sounds kind of familiar, and half your friends are super excited. How it looks: Smaller than you’d think, with a petite stage up front decorated with a vertical dotted neon “DND” sign. The outdoor smoking terrace is one of the few remaining throwbacks to 2014’s fake grass era. Maggie Choo's

Drunken munch:

What you dance to: Commercial Thai live bands or rave music. There’s rarely an in between.

Who you wind up in bed with: Fresh-faced first jobbers from ad agencies and communications departments. Beers start at: B260 Whiskey soda starts at: They only sell Chivas by bottle at B3,900. Includes free flow mixers. Behind Nunglen and Escobar, Ekkamai Soi 5/1, 094414-9266. Open Tue-Sun 8pm-2am

Sing Sing Why you go there: You’ve got that one friend in town who’s been reading all about Bangkok and think they know better than you do. That, or you drank way too much wine over dinner at Quince and can’t quite remember anything after ordering that Marou chocolate tart that’s now all over your shirt. How it looks: The tiny dance floor acts as a hub for a network of mezzanines, sunken bars and Ashely Sutton's trademark warren of secret passages leading to single-table balconies and speakeasy-style backrooms. What you dance to: Cheesy remixes of mainstream pop, from house renditions of old Chris Brown to Kendrick Lamar played at high-tempo. Who you wind up in bed with: Someone French. Beers start at: B190 Whiskey soda starts at: B245 Sukhumvit Soi 45 (next to Quince), 063-225-1331. Open daily 9pm-2am

Maggie Choo’s Why you go there: Because that same out-oftown friend who wanted to visit Sing Sing has been begging to go here as well. And though it has the pretensions of a jazz bar, it also plays a soundtrack of stuff you actually like—so the night won’t be that bad. How it looks: Button-tufted leather couches and upholstered swings carrying blasé-looking ladies dressed in embroidered cheongsams. Unless it’s Sunday, when it’s the turn of guys with six packs’ to sit on those. What you dance to: You don’t. You sit at your table with a bunch of your friends while the live band is playing. Who you wind up in bed with: On Sunday night, you want one of those shirtless six-pack men. Every other night, a middle aged European tourist. Beers start at: B180 Whiskey soda starts at: B280 Underground/F, Hotel Novotel Bangkok Fenix Silom, 320 Silom Rd., 091-772-2144. Open Mon-Thu 7:30pm-2am; Sun 7:30pm-2am; Fri-Sat 7:30pm-3am

Apart from the classic cheese burger, here they let you create your own beast (starting from B210) with over 10 ingredients, sauces and cheese. From ground sirloin, caramelized onions, roasted red pepper to brie cheese, it’s like a burger version of subway with better and lively vibe.

The once gloriously stuck-in-time hotel has been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but the 24-hour restaurant has thankfully remained unchanged—along with its awesome five-spice duck (B100) and rice soup (B15).

Competing with Jae Liab, our favorite street seafood venue on Phahol Yothin Road does Thai-Chinese seafood for Ari’s late-night party crowd.

Found at Foodland supermarkets all over town, this bright-lit, 24-hour chain does possibly the best 4am pad kra pao (B111) around. Best to avoid direct eye contact with the dozen or so drunken strangers in your company, though.

second floor of a shop-house. What you dance to: Depends who’s promoting the night, but normally a combo of techno and drum ‘n’ bass. If you know more than two tunes per night, you’re in. Who you wind up in bed with: An English teacher from the UK. Beers start at: B120

Beam Why you go there: Because it’s permanently stashed in your spacious family minivan driver’s most recent locations. How it looks: Raw concrete, smooth lines and laserbeams, courtesy of UK architect-of-themoment, Amanda Levete (also see: Central Embassy)—just perfect for IG. What you dance to: Niche electronic music. Forget about your typical EDM top 40, here; Beam goes more for African drum solos with a hint of “WTF-is-this?”

How it looks: Kind of Vegas-inspired. The cavernous venue is split into four zones: an openair terrace, a lounge, a VIP section upstairs and the club-proper. The high-ceilinged main room, or lounge, is decked out with a huge LED chandelier above a circular bar and a bunch of monochrome sofas surrounding a sizeable dance floor.

Who you wind up in bed with: International partygoers clamoring for social pics. And that’s all we’re saying.

How it looks: Multiple floors with narrow stairs just perfect for falling down when drunk. The dance floor in front of the DJ booth is strictly reserved for people who like to high-five the DJ. Easy, since he/she’s basically right in the middle of the action. What you dance to: Deep, dark techno with jazz influences form names like Sunju Hargun and DOTT. But this is Thonglor, so also expect tables on the dance floor for EDM ravers to mix their Black Label soda while trying to wiggle a dance move. If you pay a visit on the weekend, forget about dancing, let alone walking anywhere. What you dance to: Mainstream EDM in the main room, hip-hop in the other room. If you don’t know at least five tunes, then you probably live under a rock. Who you wind up in bed with: Off-duty pretties; dudes with mafia connections. Why you go there: It’s 2am, Thonglor’s called early doors, but you’re not wasted enough yet to think Wong’s is a good idea. How it looks: Very dark, with a haze of cigarette smoke that makes the non-existent decor even harder to see (that’s right: this is one of those rare smoke inside places). What you dance to: Techno, deep house, and nothing else, usually courtesy of journeymen Bangkok DJs like Nakadia and Dan Buri. Who you wind up in bed with: A 3 who you thought was a 10 because you were both so trashed. And worse: that’s their sweaty wifebeater on your bedroom floor.

She was raised on the streets of Phrom Phong but her style cues come straight from ASAP album covers. That and UK fashion mags you’ve never heard of. In fact, she’s in the process of launching her own ‘zine, featuring loads of ultra-high-flash photos of her friends getting wasted. Where to find her: Beam’s Dalmatian room, Blaq Lyte, Future Factory THE COCKTAIL MAFIA

Thanks to this crew of well-groomed, waistcoat toting drink creatives, we can all enjoy creations like vodka sous-vide with butter, syphoned through a partially smoked Cuban cigar and garnished with soil taken from the base of a Japanese yuzu tree—yours for double what you just paid for dinner. Where to find them: Backstage Bar, Q&A

Beers start at: B180 Whiskey soda starts at: B220 544/5 Ratchadaphisek Soi 7, 081-844-7080. Open 8pm-late

Beauty of Asymmetry Italian luxury label Marni’s pre-fall 2017 collection by new creative director Francesco Risso plays on the brand’s quirky reputation by accentuating asymmetry and overlapping layers along with loud prints and colors. Get the bold print over bold print look with the Marni x Stutterhein two color-blocked rain coat (B39,000), which is perfect for this monsoon season. Accessories like handbags take clean geometrical forms such as squares and circles (see Borsa Tambourine bag, B49,500), while heels are architectural (our pick is the leather sling back pumps, B26,500). Print also makes an appearance in a PVC tote bag (B11,900). 1/F, Erawan Bangkok, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-250-7730. BTS Chit Lom

SHOPPING

Knit Up Outside the aircon-blasted office or mall, Bangkok isn’t exactly calling out for knitwear. That hardly matters now that Missoni, the Italian high-end fashion house known for its iconic zigzag knit line, has arrived at Central Chidlom department store. Dominated by orange tones and wood-accented furniture, the boutique also manages nods to the brand’s multi-color, geometrical designs. Best news, the latest collection boasts plenty of wearable-in-Bangkok pieces such as Giacca blazer (B79,900), mini glittery dress (B73,800) and maxi dress (B75,500). All pieces are now 40-percent off till Aug 31. G/F, Luxe Gallery, Central Chidlom, Phloen Chit Rd., 022-549-148. BTS Phloen Chit

MALL

Ari of the East With Ari gearing up for Ari Hills, now Phra Khanong is getting set to welcome a new major mall development. Situated right next to the BTS line on Sukhumvit Road, the five-rai, three-story Summer Hill community mall is on track to open by September. Renderings show an open-air design replete with dangling tropical greenery—no surprise, then, that it comes from Boutique Corporation, the same guys behind Rain Hill mall. They’re promising 40 retail stores, along with the usual co-working space, gym and office spaces. 1106 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-620-8777. BTS Phra Khanong. www. fb.com/summerhillbkk

INTERIOR

Great Dane Norse Republics, the people who import Hay, Lightyears and Paper Collective, have now brought in Republic of Fritz Hansen, the Danish furniture design company renowned for its super-premium collaborations. To own one of their timeless creations, be prepared to splash some serious dosh: the iconic Egg chair is limited to three pieces in water-buffalo leather at B679,600 or three in Raf Simons’ Ria primrose fabric at B484,900. More affordable accessories include the High vase by Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon (B8,400) and stack tray #5 by Wednesday Architecture (B10,500). The collection’s on display now at The House No.14, an elegant two-story pastel-gray house dating back to the ‘50s. 1 Soi Somkid, 02-015-4164. BTS Chit Lom

Beer Brothers Seven Bangkok izakaya where the beer is too cold to miss TERIYAKI BAR KELLY’S The cute tavern-like teriyaki bar named after Grace Kelly serves well-priced izakaya classics (wings, noodles, nabe, tepanyaki and takoyaki), with many dishes hailing from the owner’s hometown of Nagoya. The teriyaki skewers (B315/five, B498/eight) are excellent. With great drink prices one could happily stick to these moreish offerings, while ordering from the cheap and cheerful cocktail list (from B180), the lengthy selection of sake, shochu and umeshu, or sticking to the requisite Asahi draught (B120) or a big bottle of Singha is also only B160. The “bottomless drink” promotion (B400/ person/120min) is tempting, too.

out its Facebook page (www.fb.com/shakariki432) for news of occasional Japanese imports such as kurodai sashimi (black sea bass, B300) from Fukuoka. Also try the tasty Osaka-style okonomiyaki (B230). PS Tower, 36/1 Sukhumvit Soi 21 (Asoke), 02-664-0927. Open daily 5pm-3am, MRT Petchaburi

KUSHIKATSU DARUMA

46 Sukhumvit Soi 51, 02-662-5155, Open Tue-Sun 5pmmidnight. BTS Thong Lo

At this Bangkok branch of an Osaka favorite, the traditional kushikatsu (deep-fried golden oysters, tuna, prawns and vegetables in cold breadcrumb batter) are fantastic—fresh, fluffy and surprisingly non-greasy. For maximum value, go for the lunch set, which features five assorted skewers with rice, raw egg, stewed pork belly and miso soup (B250).

TAISHUSAKABA TORAYOSHI

Thonglor Soi 9, 02-023-6695, Open daily 11:30am-2pm, 5-11pm. BTS Thong Lo

Run by the same team as neighboring Nagiya, Taishusakaba Torayoshi’s chefs know how to grill fish perfectly. Brushed with a very light, not-too-sweet soy sauce, it has a slightly crisp exterior and fluffy inside. The kitchen is just as competent with raw fish, particularly the gokai nokke (B490). They claim that it’s “big in Japan” and we can see why: The six maki rolls almost completely disappear under the generous amounts of fresh crab, salmon roe and minced tuna. You can get a great bottle of sake for a mere B300, Asahi draught is just B90 and a bottle of Singha is just B130—but the complete drink list, which also includes sochu, would take many drunken nights to fully explore. Nihonmachi, 109 Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-258-2016. Open Mon-Fri 5pm-midnight; Sat-Sun 10am-midnight

SHAKARIKI 432 (THONGLOR) Expect a down-to-earth atmosphere, exuberant staff and a solid menu of tasty fusion maki rolls such as the succulent foie gras and wagyu (both B380). Wash them down with an icy cold bottle of Singha (B130). Check

Brought to you by Singha

701 Aug4_17.indd 11

KARATAMA ROBATAYAKI Akanoya Robatayaki has been rebranded and now offers more variety, functioning somewhat like a Japanese market. Grab a bottle of Singha (B120) to go with the fresh ingredients (imported twice a week from Japan) to grill at your table, such as awabi (Japanese abalone), kinki (rockfish), Kagoshima beef and Hokkaido corn. Alternatively, you can order dishes like fresh assorted sashimi (starting from B800), Kagoshima beef hot pot (B1,100) and soy sauce-braised rockfish (starting from B2,000). D1 Bldg., Piman49, 46/10 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-662-4237. Open daily 6pm-midnight. BTS Thong Lo

TEPPEN Tucked behind Major Sukhumvit, this tatami-floored izakaya is a favorite among Japanese expats looking for a taste of home. The warm lighting and sincere staff create a friendly, authentic vibe. We particularly like the katsuo warayaki (straw-roasted skipjack

tuna, B430), which blends fresh bonito fish with the flavor of hay smoke. The fresh salmon roe-topped ikura kamameshi (old-school Japanese rice made with bonito broth, B340) is wholesome and very tasty. On the drink list, you can grab an ice-cold Asahi (B160), big bottle of Singha (B150), ginger highball (B180) or full bottle of sake (from B1,500). 14/2 Sukhumvit Soi 61, 02-714-1412. Open 6pm-midnight. BTS Ekkamai

SEKAI NO YAMACHAN Taking over the former spot belonging to Carl’s Jr. in salaryman’s haven Soi Thaniya, this fried chicken wing (from B130/five pieces) specialist from Nagoya does a proper list of drinking snacks. Be warned: The low-ceilinged room at the back gets pretty boisterous. Another branch on Sukhumvit Soi 39. All you can drink deal is B499 and lasts for 90 minutes where you can get Asahi draught beer, sake, shochu, chuhai, whiskey highballs, acerola and soft drinks. If you’re not that big of a drinker, grab a 450ml glass of Singha draught for B99. The Manor, Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-5541. Open daily 5:30pm-12:30am; Sat-Sun 11:20am-2:30pm YSK Building, Soi Thaniya, Silom Rd., 02-632-8338. BTS Sala Daeng

STAY COOL WHEREVER YOU GO WITH THE NEW SINGHA ICE PACK Whether you’re headed to the beach or throwing a barbecue in your backyard, Singha has a new beer pack that changes everything. Its clever design allows you to pour ice directly into the box, so that your beer stays frosty cold despite the crushing summer heat. See, it’s possible to leave the comfort of your air-con in the summer. You just need to pack the right stuff.

Tucked beside Bangkok Screening Room, this multi-label menswear store is run by one of the co-founders of Sukhumvit's Chinese-themed bar Dim Dim. The raw, minimalist interior displays niche brands drawn from around the world, like Goetze from Berlin, Document from Seoul and Mfpen from Copenhagen. Grab a cool striped long-sleeve shirt from Goetze at B7,300, a perfect-for-Bangkok indigo silk jacket by Document (B15,900) or a simple Winona T-shirt (B2,200) from Idea.

When Camp arrived in Siam Square last year, it saved us all the fear of ordering from untested Instagram fashion shops by rounding up the best of them in an industrial-chic boutique worthy of your own photo feed. Now it’s branched out to its third location, where it offers semi-formal and professional looks. You’ll find tons of clothing and accessories split into two sides—one for working women, the other for those who play if safe in fashion. As always, everything’s still super-affordable—think prices between B600-2,000.

This green-toned shop-house sells mainly small plants and the pottery to store them in (from B120 for a tiny cactus and B100 for a pastel-color pot)—perfect for when you finally get around to doing up your apartment. Make the most of your tiny space with one of the eye-catching rattan plant stands for your ferns and succulents (B1,150) or a metal wire plant supporter for your climbers (starting at B1,680). Not sure where to start? Show the owners a pic of your space (indoors or outdoors) and they’ll point out the plants you should opt for.

Red Diamond Cafe

MOST At this sun-drenched spot, the gang behind Baker CREATIVE Gonna Bake (in the same building) teams up with COFFEE barista Worawut Joowattanapong to incorporate Thai ingredients and flavors into tea- and coffee-based drinks like the Chor Ginnaree (black coffee with roselle and ginger ale, B180), Toob-Tub (milk coffee with peanut chocolate and milk toffee, B180) and Mongkhud Sumala (white tea, jasmine, aloe vera and pink orange, B180). There’s slow-brew coffee (from B150) for the purists, too.

This far-flung, rusty building comes fully equipped BEST as a coffee roaster, cafe and school. Also known as COFFEE Intercof, their coffee academy offers courses from CLASSES Specialty Coffee Association of America and Specialty Coffee Association of Europe certified instructors. Red Diamond doesn’t just have a roasting machine on-site, it also has its own farm in Pha Tang Chiang Rai, which is certified by CQI as a specialty coffee producer. Along with their own beans, they also roast coffee from around the world, including varieties with 90+ scores (an extra B150-200), and Cup of Excellence competition winners (an extra B100). Try a cup from the syphon-like coffee machine called Steampunk (B150 for hot/B165 for iced coffee) or espresso from B120.

Artisan Cafe This Chiang Mai-hailing cafe sits in a glasshouse to the side of Kiew Kai Ga cafe in Ladphrao. They spotlight medium-roast coffee beans from Nan province’s Tha Wang Pha district in espresso options like coffee with milk (B90) and Morocchino (B90), a hybrid mocha and cappuccino with chocolate cream on top. 33 Nakniwas Rd., 061-963-5364. Open daily 7am-12am

BIY Coffee Bar With its name standing for “Brew It Yourself,” this is an offshoot of online coffee equipment shop Beans Here. Roaster and owner Sirichai “So” Sakornvisava is already a well-known figure among coffee geeks for his upcoming workshops, which you can take here starting at an affordable B800/person for a cupping tasting event. Otherwise, drop by for a cup of joe at B100 for Thai beans from places like Suan Sodchuen in Ranong or Mae Kampong in Chiang Mai, or B120 for imported beans and blends. Also, don’t miss the house-made treats like som ma nus (meringue with coconut flakes, Btk) or yokmanee (pandan sticky ball with coconut shreds, Btk). 2/F, Prime Station Hotel, 23/34-35 Tri Mit Rd. Open Sat-Thu 10:30am-6:30pm

Roastology The five-year-old coffee roaster has opened its first showroom that doubles as a compact cafe on Sala Daeng. Here, they not only showcase house-roasted and blended beans through espresso-based cups (from B100) and slow-bar (from B80 for Thai beans; from B150 for imported beans) but also create impressive concoctions for non-coffee drinkers, like the super dark chocolate drink (B100120), a blend of South American and African cocoa, and the purple sweet potato latte (B130), which we recommend topping with an espresso shot at no extra cost. RESTAURANT

From Madrid with Love The latest tapas contender in town, El Tapeo, is the sister restaurant of Madrid’s 12-year-old El Rinconcito de Juan. That restaurant’s chef, Ruben Gonzalez, teams up with husband-wife duo Manatsanan Charoensuk and Jorge Arnanz to give a three-story space on Soi Thonglor a Spanish makeover through beautiful patterned tiles and yellow accents, and serve authentic flavors. Prices are also cheap for this part of town: small plates start at B130 for the gazpacho and B150 for gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns) and albondigas de cerdo caseras (minced pork meatballs in homemade tomato sauce). More substantial is the arroz negro (imported squid ink paella with seafood, B850), which serves 2-3 people. 159/10 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), between soi 7 and 9, 062-895-4656. Aiming to chip away at the gender bias in the drinks industry, Kino Soh opened the all-female-run Highball in Singapore in 2016. Bangkok's version is led by Saimai Nantarat (previously of Bunker) and Thananya “Jib” Samoema (Diageo World Class Finalist 2017 and previously of Mikys). The drinks are all about subtle twists to the highball, a family of cocktails traditionally made with just a spirit and a carbonated mixer over ice. The menu's broken down by base spirit (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whisky, brandy, bitters), featuring the likes of the Bangkok Mule (B250), an aromatic mix of vodka, Falernum, clove and lime juice, topped with ginger ale. The only Jim Beam tap in town also dispenses easy-to-drink concoctions like the zesty Yuzu Highball (B220). G/F, Sasha's Hotel Uno, Sukhumvit Soi 19, 064-429-8624. Open Mon-Fri 6pm-1am

Possibly Bangkok's tiniest chef's table restaurant, Maison de Bangkok, takes over a shipping container in the garden of Thai restaurant Kram. Here, chef Chatchai Chaengnakorn, formerly of Honmono Sushi, serves multi-course meals that are big on freshly imported Japanese produce, East-meets-West flavors and delicate plating. A sleek white counter allows only room for six diners, who are served ever-changing menus for lunch (B1,999 for seven courses) and dinner (B2,999 for 10 courses). These could include a fancified version of Edo-style sushi that’s topped with chutoro, uni and caviar embellished with organic edible flowers or a toasted croissant stuffed with an assortment of sashimi, garnished with yoghurt-infused pearls. Bookings are required one day in advance. 113 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 088-556-5566. Open Tue-Sun 12-10pm

Since launching in Kwangju in 2016, dessert chain Tarr Tarr has expanded to more than 80 branches across South Korea. Now Bangkok is the first foreign city to welcome the brand's fancy tarts with eye-catching fruity toppings, various cream cheese-based fillings and cookie-like dough base. Here at Siam Paragon, the large ovens pump out some 80 different types of tart, including the sour yogurt tart (B180) sprinkled with dried strawberry powder, refreshing mandarin tart (B180) with crusted pistachio, hot-baked cheese tart (B80) and mixed nut tart (B90). The best times to visit are 12pm and 6pm when the day's full range is on display. One day advanced ordering is required for the one-pound (450g) tarts, which start at B950. OPEN DOOR

Menya Itto

Tokyo’s favorite ramen shop brings its seafood broth, and queues, to Bangkok.

The buzz: Bangkok's ramen lovers are queueing up an hour before opening time to get a taste of the latest arrival from Tokyo. Menya Itto boasts of being the no. 1 ranked ramen shop on tabelog.com, which is Japan's most used restaurant ranking site. Doors open at 10am and 6pm daily, with only 150 bowls per service. The decor: A minimalist, light wood affair typical of so many Japanese restaurants. The semi-open kitchen lets you watch the cooks busily straining noodles and ladling broth, whether you’re seated at the counter or one of the standalone tables. The food: Chef Yukihoko Sakamoto, owner of the original Menya Itto, is in charge here, so you can expect the real deal. The specialty is a seafood and chicken broth that’s lighter and less greasy than your typical tonkotsu (pork bone) ver-

16

sion. What else makes the ramen and tsukeme n (dipping ramen) stand out here are the two sizes of daily house-made noodles and the tender, one-hour souse vide meat toppings of chicken, pork belly and pork shoulder. Have the signature broth with the Noko Gyokai tsukemen (B270/B350), whose thick, bouncy noodles are made for dipping, or as an ordinary bowl of ramen (B195/B240) with thinner noodles. Otherwise, you can also order shio ramen (B230), whose chicken base comes doused with salt from Okayama, Japan.

is somewhat of a rarity in this tonkotsu-loving town, and the delicious sous-vide meat toppings are worth the queue alone. Wanvida Jiralertpaiboon LG/F, Erawan, 494 Phloen Chit Rd.,02-250-7669. Open daily 10am-2pm, 6pm-10am

The drinks: Apart from the usual soft drinks (B30), refillable green tea (B50) and draft Asahi (B130/325ml), there are two sakes on offer, Suigei Tokubetsu Junmai (B315/150ml) and Kagatobi Junmai Daiginjo (B270/150ml). Why we’d come back: Menya Itto’s complex seafood broth

Peace Oriental Teahouse

NEW AND NOTED

Whisk It Up Teerachai Limpapaitoon’s zen-like Peace Oriental Tearoom has played a huge role in selling Bangkok hipsters on the world of full-leaf, fuss-free oriental tea. Now its opened a third branch out on Rama 9 (G/F, G Tower, 1 Ratchadaphisek Rd., 097-267-2626. MRT Rama 9). Here, you’ll find the same variety of hot tea (B180-450/pot) and matcha (B450-1,980/bowl), as well as Matcha Extremist (B285), an amazing charcoal-tinged matcha ice cream. Stay tuned for a new yogurt and honey drink, too.

Blue Romance Situated down a residential soi in what feels like the middle of nowhere, neon-drenched Chatuchak bar Trailer Trash Blue Eyes (3/15 Viphavadi Rangsit Soi 36, 086-9960095) recalls a teenage bedroom circa 1987. A film-loving fashion photographer has opened up the ground floor of his home to serve bottles of Leo beer (B90) and root beer

floats (B69), along with comfort food like Canadian poutine (deep-fried chicken and fries doused in gravy and cheese, B100), chili dogs (B89) and pancakes (from B100).

In the House Ari’s A House (5 Paholyothin Soi 2, 093-565-9097) is part restaurant, part house music bar, masterminded by a couple of DJs you’ve probably seen spinning at Beam. The menu spans East-meets-West fusion like spaghetti shrimp in Japanese sauce (B260) and comforting staples like juicy deep-fried chicken wings (B220) that give Bonchon a run for its money. Just B180 gets you surprisingly potent cocktails like an old fashioned (Jim Beam bourbon, white sugar, angostura bitters) from a bartender who formerly worked at Ce La Vi. Upstairs doubles as a DJ lounge.

TABLE TALK

The Red Sun Soi Chula, Phaya Thai Soi 64. 02-252-1395. Open daily 10am-10pm With more than 50 branches in its native Korea, The Red Sun boasts of being one of the country’s leading restaurants for tokpokki (the Korean street food snack of rice cake in a sweet chili sauce). The small but chic glasshouse cafe— dark woods, steel chairs, bare concrete and whimsical illustrations—is always crowded, and gets really packed in the evenings. The menu keeps things pretty short, as they focus mainly on tokpokki, which comes with seven different toppings and three different spice levels. Exclusively for Citi credit card members. Camp Curry HHHH Japanese. 4/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-610-9612. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Siam F B-BB

Camp Curry puts gimmickry over quality. This family-friendly chain’s claim of selling Tokyo’s best curry seems laughable when at Siam Paragon alone it’s a distant second to Coco Ichibanya, that ubiquitous mall dwelling, which does tastier food in bigger portions at cheaper prices, without all the bells and whistles. Camp Curry’s 34th branch, and first outside the homeland, transforms a slither of space into a quirky monument to the Japanese love of camping. The single wall is lined with backpacks, maps and kerosene lamps, tea comes in tartan tumblers, and bib-clad diners sit on Coleman fold-out chairs and eat over big brown paper tablecloths. So far, so twee. However, it doesn’t make up for the mostly run-of-the-mill food. Not bad, just boring, this soupy, under-spiced curry is unlikely to excite anyone brought up on the rich, buttery goodness of

Western. 415 Charoenkrung Soi 45, 090-0212111. Open Tue-Fri 10am-2pm; Sat-Sun 5-10:30pm. B-BB. Corkage B695

A wave of openings in 2016 and 2017 has made the Charoenkrung neighborhood a real foodie favorite. Outlaw is part of that movement, and regularly fills its tiny interior at the bottom of a shop-house with a mix of expats and Thais who come for the comforting Western staples as much as the relaxed vibe. The exposed brick walls lined with interesting photographs and creative decor using repurposed window frames and wooden boxes give hints of French chef-owner Romain Guiot’s artistic background. His culinary talents are on full display through a tiny open kitchen, with just a small wooden bar between it and the diners. Like the decor, Guiot’s personality makes a mark on the dining experience during the frequent moments he steps out of the kitchen to charm guests, many of whom know him on a first-name basis, judging by our last visit. The menu focuses on simple, comforting dishes u s i n g q u a l i t y, m o s t l y i m p o r te d

ingredients. The selections can feel a bit scanty, however. There are only three appetizers, all featuring some rendition of tomatoes on toast. That’s not to say the mini bruschetta (B180) doesn’t hit the mark with freshly diced tomato and beetroot over crunchy slices of toasted baguette and a dash of balsamic vinaigrette. The decent selection of tartines (open-faced sandwiches, from B250), cold-cut and cheese platters (from B695) and salads (from B290) make up for the lackluster starters. With that said, the last time we ordered the goat cheese salad (B320), we couldn’t taste any honey-mustard dressing. The dish felt more like a heap of expensive cheese on a bed of uninspiring greens and veg. The creamy carbonara with yellow duck egg topping (B360) is better, thanks to its thick slices of tender pork, though we prefer our pasta a little more al dente. The menu gets some oomph from a range of hearty meats, such as wagyu steak (B1,300/300g), lamb chops (B690) and roasted duck breast with honey and thyme (B750), which is succulent and well-seasoned alongside creamy truffle mashed potatoes and a healthy dose of grilled garden vegetables. We wouldn’t travel across Bangkok solely to visit Outlaw, but its respectable selection of German, Italian and Thai craft beers (from B220), well-prepared food and eclectic, artsy vibe make it a great liftoff point for nights in Charoenkrung.

Ramen Tei or the hefty, stew-like fare of Grand Ramen. For theater, staff in broadrimmed hats pour the brown stuff into steaming skillets table-side. Unfortunately, there’s not even enough of it to finish your rice when you order the katsu curry (B250), whose pork cutlet is serviceably crunchy if a tad on the dry side. The “fully-loaded” vegetable curry (B190) fares better and does indeed come packed with carrot, corn, eggplant and potato, which are said to come from the Royal Projects. With all this freshness, it’s almost easy to forget this is carb-loaded comfort food that’s hardly supposed to be healthy. Still, that curry. We resort to lacing it with katsu sauce, cribbed from our order of karaage (B149/four). Lukewarm on our last visit, these drumsticks are also disappointingly low on the meat to mutant-looking fried batter ratio. Another side, the Hango shake salad (B129), a mix of iceberg, croutons and sweet potato shaken and served at your table, is awash in sickly, sweet dressing. Peel away the outdoorsy kitsch and Camp Curry’s food is underwhelming. A Bangkok-only menu insertion like a large hot pot (B380) for sharing doesn’t change that, nor does an on-point dessert like the honey-glazed purple sweet potato (B80). At a pinch, keep the place in mind for a last-ditch Sunday lunch, when the crowds are moderately more bearable than at Coco four floors lower in Paragon’s main food zone.
