MAESTRO MASTERFUL LIVING A New Standard for Urban Lifestyles When it comes to living the good life in Bangkok, people like to keep it simple. The concept behind Major Development’s MAESTRO RESIDENCES project is a collection of truly stunning spaces where all people, in spite of their different lifestyles, can relate and customize their living experience exactly as they want. Unique lifestyles, an easy-to-access location and a peaceful atmosphere—this is what people look for in a home.

MASTER YO U R M I N D The hustle and bustle of Bangkok takes its toll on everyone. Nothing beats escaping the city when the smog of downtown starts to wear you down. Amidst leafy surroundings, MAESTRO RESIDENCES combines its fully-equipped facilities — like fitness centers, swimming pools, and common areas—with harmonized design elements meant to create a homey, relaxed ambiance and help escape the chaos of city life.

MASTER CRAFTSMANSHIP With decades of experience in Bangkok's development industry, MAESTRO RESIDENCES condominiums offer rigorous craftsmanship and well-selected materials. It’s about precision, focusing on every detail, and creating distinguished experiences. This is where MAESTRO RESIDENCES really shine—carefully built to create something truly unique.

M AS T E R O F T I M E

M AS T E R D E S I G N MAESTRO RESIDENCES’ design aims to get one thing right: that feeling of timelessness. The condominiums' "Classic Inspired, Modern Twist" concept was created as an interpretation of classic European architecture combined with modernity—giving birth to its eye-catching exteriors and interiors that not only reflect the contemporary lifestyle of Bangkok’s new generation, but also stay relevant at any point of time.

All of the new MAESTRO RESIDENCES condominiums are situated in prime locations around Bangkok. In other words, you get the best of both worlds: avoid hellish traffic and take in the serene vibes whenever you want. All MAESTRO RESIDENCES properties are located in some of Bangkok's best areas (with easy access to the CBD and travel exits), but when you enter each property you still get the feeling that you are close to nature.

Experience MAESTRO RESIDENCES at MAESTRO: MASTERFUL LIVING event from June 21-24 at 1/F, CentralWorld. There will be an official opening for three ready-to-move-in condominiums, MAESTRO 01 SATHORN - YENAKAT, MAESTRO 03 RATCHADA - RAMA 9 and MAESTRO 14 SIAM - RATCHATHEWI —starting from THB 3.8 million. Notice anything different? That’s right, BK Magazine’s got a fresh new look. That old one reminded us too much of a simpler time when cocktails cost B250 and Yingluck was strutting round in Burberry wellies. But that’s all in the past now—unlike these headlines. How well have you been paying attention?

HOT OR NOT

BLANKETS

This foundation is bringing light to Bangkok’s slums through music

Sing Buri, the central province with an average year-round temperature of 29 degrees, was recently embroiled in a corruption scandal involving—of all things—winter blankets. Officials claimed they cost B400 per unit; the retailer was actually selling them at B200 per unit; and the people they were bought for said they didn’t want them in the first place.

INTERVIEW

Geraldine “Gigi” Nemrod, 32, founded the Khlong Toey Music Program in the middle of Bangkok’s biggest slum, Khlong Toey, in 2012 to help teach underprivileged children music skills. Now, the small organization has recently launched an art program, in addition to music, dance and English. We spoke with Gigi and her assistant, Pimsupa “Bo” Phakdee, 37, about the project.

“Every month we lack about B15-20,000”

How did you start this organization? Gigi: When I arrived in Thailand, I worked as a plant biologist. After two years, I quit my career, deciding that I wanted to do something that had a meaning for someone. I started volunteering at different organizations and after six months, decided to start my own project. Bo: I was Gigi’s Thai teacher six years ago. She told me on our first meeting that this was her dream. About two years ago she was looking for an assistant and asked me to find someone for her. I said I would help until she could find someone. Two years later and I’m still here [laughs]. How many kids do you have in your program? Gigi: Roughly 40, aged five to 20-something years old. Bo: We have one boy in his 20s who is not quite mentally stable, but he comes regularly to classes. He is super sweet. Is the organization threatened by under-funding? Gigi: Fifty percent is from [US-based organization] Playing for Change and the rest is funded by other companies including TV channels. Every month we lack about B15-20,000. We want to generate our own income, we’ve tried so many ways. We bought ukuleles and got them painted by famous Thai artists like Singto Numchok and Pod Moderndog, and we made some profits, but we are not business people. What do you get out of doing this? Gigi: A meaning. A sense of doing something good. You know why you wake up in the morning. Bo: Gigi is a really talented scientist and she

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Upfront_BK 740_Jun 08_18_01_New.indd 5

could go way further than this. We have to learn so many things, research about everything ourselves, and that has taught me many skills. Gigi: And of course, to see the kids happy.

INFUSED COCKTAILS Sorry to spoil your fun, Mr. Bartender, but it turns out that barrel -aged negroni you’ve been working on for the past two months is illegal. In fact, a couple of our bartender buddies have been fined B30,000 for doing just that (sorry, we’re not naming any names). It’s all to do with tax apparently, though what this means for your local ya-dong seller we’re not quite sure.

Bo: All the kids are sweet and well-behaved. Gigi: They’ve changed to be even sweeter and softer after taking our classes. We get to meet so many kind people. Have any of the kids gone on to achieve something great? Bo: We played at Kod Indy music festival and ABC channel from Australia filmed us. Five of the kids also performed an acoustic set on We Kids on the Workpoint Channel, including a blind ukulele player. What is the most serious problem in the Khlong Toey slum? Gigi: Drugs. We don’t face it at the school usually but once we had a kid who brought drugs into our school. Bo: Yeah, he brought it in a water bottle and was bragging about it to his friends. The teacher heard and spent a long, long time giving them a lesson about that. It is that easy to find drugs around here. Gigi: Mostly it’s family problems: different parents for each sibling or sometimes they don’t even know who the parents are and they just live with their grandmothers. This is something you can feel in their personality—they can be a little angry. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

FOOTBALL In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a World Cup happening, and that means you’re going to be spending a lot of this month in a British pub, switching your bottle of Rogue IPA for a pint of John Smiths and enjoying the liberal smoking-indoor policies that these places get away with. Bangkok’s

Best friend Bangkok can be a daunting city for a dog owner. But there are places where your pooch is welcome. We’ve put in the calls, chatted with the owners and had words with the vet to bring you Bangkok’s very best pet-friendly businesses. And we don’t mean cat cafes. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

BMA Dog Park

Finding dog-friendly parks can be a nightmare in this town. Beneath the Ram Intra Highway, BMA Dog Park (Khwaeng Tha Raeng, 02-2222222. Open daily 5pm-9pm) might not be the most beautiful place to let your pet run around, but it’s safe and secure. Before getting in, your dog must go through vaccinations, a health check-up and get microchipped. Once inside, dogs can run around off-leash and even have slides and a sandpit to play with. But Sukhumvit’s well-heeled dog-owners have another tip: Dog Park 49 (8/3 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 064586-6780). Here, for a cost of B150-250 per day, help is at hand to walk, run, socialize and bathe your dog. There’s even a doggie swimming pool priced by the weight of your pooch.

Morning Rituals

We have great news! There are plenty of stunning brunch spots and cafes in Bangkok that are happy to welcome your beloved pooch in the morning. Take Luka. Both Pan Road (64/3 Pan Rd., 02-637-8558) and Thonglor (The Taste, Thonglor Soi 11, 02-050-0469) branches say yes to dogs, so that means at 8am, you can be eating your French toast (B250) while sipping on a green tea latte (B130) while doggy gets to do his business in a designated outdoor area. D’Ark at EmQuartier (651 Sukhumvit Rd., 02003-6013) is another hot-spot for dog-lovers, meaning for once you can visit the mall

without leaving your dog out in the heat. Enjoy their breakfast burrito (with scrambled eggs, spicy chicken, tomato, avocado, bell pepper, lettuce and sour cream, B320) and hot chocolate—just remember to never feed your hairy companions any chocolate! The Counting Sheep Corner (26/1 Sukhumvit Soi 61, 02-714-4477) provides a boozy place to play thanks to a) the owners’ craft beer, Dirty Forty (B180) and b) a second floor terrace welcoming of dogs. Heading back over to Thonglor, Audrey Cafe & Bistro will make you feel like Audrey Hepburn with her Yorkshire Terrier (even if you came with a pitbull) thanks to its black and white wallpaper and cute chandeliers. While your dog sleeps under the AC, you can enjoy their Peking duck spring rolls (B190).

Boozy Retreats

Hipster hounds will approve if you take them along for a session at Thonglor craft-brew specialist, Bottles of Beer (Sukhumvit Soi 34, 02040-0473). Co-owner Ruan Lim has a “smol pup” of his own, Khao Niew the chihuahua, whose chilled-out persona endears itself to everyone. Over in Phrom Phong, Changwon Express Flow House (37 Asoke Din Daeng Rd., 092-251-8661) doesn’t just have a surf simulator; it also has a second-floor outdoor space where dogs can run wild. Order up a glass of the owner’s Asoke Pale Ale (B200) and enjoy watching people fall on their faces on the wave machine. When cocktail hour arrives, we can think of no better spot to unwind than on the terrace of Charoenkrung’s Tropic City (672/65 Charoenkrung Soi 28, 091-870-9825), where they’ll happily let any well-behaved pooches laze around while you sip on the finest rum cocktails in town. Our last tip is for sports fans. With a big projector positioned in its semi-open beer garden, The Drunken Leprechaun (4 Sukhumvit Soi 15, 02-309-3255) marks the perfect spot to catch all the World Cup’s big fixtures. Just as important as the dig-friendly policy are the jugs of Singha—just B300.

Feeding Time

Forget fake-smiling your way through dinner whilst worrying about your dog back home by hitting up one of these restaurants with dog-friendly yards. Between Ekkamai and Thonglor, Mother May I (26/2 Sukhumvit Soi 59, 097-990-5990) offers a big green yard for dogs to romp about. You can even sit in air-conditioned comfort and keep an eye on them through the floor-to-ceiling window. Swish Italian restaurant La Casa Nostra (22 Sathorn Soi 1 Yaek 2, 02-287-2402) also has a quiet, dog-friendly yard where head chef Nino Scognamillo’s dog can often be seen running around and greeting customers. Head there for the second Sunday of each month, when free-flow alcohol is just B600. Dogs are also more than welcome at Sukhumvit’s Freebird (28 Sukhumvit Soi 47, 02-662-4936)—just be careful because they also have a couple of bunnies running around. Be sure to try their delicious duck breast served with carrot puree cooked in caramelized butter, mulberries and charred onions (B680). Nearby, Viva Thonglor (387 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-000-9698) is another dog-friendly foodie joint that serves a menu devised by former Opposite Mess Hall chef Jess Barnes (including a beastly buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, B350).The ever-reliable people at Quince (Sukhumvit Soi 45, 02-662-4478) also provide a mini garden that’s perfect for pooches. Pop over for lunch on a good-weather day to try chef Charlie Jones’s tasty dishes like lamb chops (B690) and vanilla panna cotta topped with mulberries (B200).

Social Creatures

The common areas of Bangkok’s community malls can be a dog-friendly paradise. K Village (Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-2589919) stands out for having a tiny (and we mean tiny) dog park next to its children’s play park. The space might only fit 10 labradors, but it’s free, central and friendly enough to leave well-behaved dogs as you shop. With its indoor-outdoor, open-plan design, The Commons (335 Thonglor Soi 17, 089-1522677) also celebrates its dog-friendly credentials, and it’s a similar story at Phra Khanong’s W District (1599 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-381-2277) —a chilled, open-air space with cuisines from Indian to Mexican on offer.

MOW CHALERNWONG, 37, BUSINESS WOMAN AND OWNER OF A BULLDOG, GOLDEN RETRIEVER, SIBERIAN HUSKY AND THAI CROSSBREED “When you have big dogs, you need space, and generally, there’s no space for dogs to run around in Bangkok.”

KIRANA “FAH" DHONAVANIK, 22, UNIVERSITY STUDENT AND CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL OWNER “I raise my dog in a condo so always need to find time to let him run around. I feel that Thai dog owners in Bangkok don’t see the importance of socializing with other dogs. I want my dog to be friendly with all breeds.”

SAVITA “IZE" JITOWAT, 33, TV COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR AND OWNER OF THREE POMERANIANS “Bangkok is not a dog-friendly city. I’d love a big dog like a golden retriever but they would be so hard to move around. That’s why I picked a small breed.”

ADOPT

CONSIDER THIS Dr. Nareewan Yimsomruay is the founder of Sukhumvit Veterinarians on Sukhumvit Soi 51. A vet with 43 years’ experience, she’s also the owner of 10 adopted dogs—and has some words of advice for prospective Bangkok dog owners.

Coverstory_740_Jun 08_18_03_New.indd 8

LOOK AROUND YOU. Where do you live? Do you have the space? Are there small children around? Only then can you decide what breed you want.

ADOPT. There are so many dogs that need to be rescued. If you’re not limited by space, I would recommend adoption.

ALL BREEDS HAVE THEIR FLAWS so speak to a vet. They will be able to prepare you for potential health issues or help you decide on which breed to get.

THINK SMALL BREEDS for a Bangkok condo: chihuahua, French bulldog, poodle, shih tzu, pomeranian and Yorkshire terrier.

CO-WORKING

Glowfish Sathorn Glowfish’s second branch is one of Bangkok’s most ambitious co-working spaces to date. The super-modern space filled with art and tech installations houses 26 serviced office spaces (B32,000/month), three conference halls that can be connected to create one mega 400-sq-meter event space (B7,000- 20,000), five smaller meeting rooms (B1,000/hr), as well as virtual offices starting at B15,000/six months. 2/F, Sathorn Thani 2, 57 Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Rd., 02-109-9600

These next-level co-working spaces are changing the way Bangkokians feel about work

The Great Room Chit Lom’s latest co-working space shuns the makeshift-industrial aesthetic in favor of a five-star hotel lobby vibe. Spread across two sky-high floors of Gaysorn Tower, this Singapore-born workspace offers you rich interiors of marble-clad desks and tan leather sofas. The “Drawing Room” lets you chill out with your laptop on the couch, “Desks” offer private day-to-day work benches and “Dedicated Offices” are for burgeoning business empires. 25-26/F, Gaysorn Tower, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-105-2017 Spaces Summer Hill The Amsterdam-based office and co-working brand Spaces is one of Bangkok’s largest co-working space to date, spanning the top floor of Phra Khanong’s Summer Hill mall. Think Scandinavian minimalism mixed with modern Italian furniture. “Dedicated Desks” (B6,880/month) offer you a personal workspace, “Meeting Rooms” (B1,638/half day) play host to group seminars, and the “Business Club” (B4,490) lets you hang out with other members. 3/F, Summer Hill, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-026-0635

How to ace your next dinner party with these 4 brands

Start with an inspirational theme Every good table setting starts with a clever theme and tone, but don’t mistake that for taking things over the top. A crisp, clean tablecloth works just fine for formal settings, while durable, well-made linens and napkins should be your go-to for casual dinners. Go for Habitat’s Gala table cloths (B820), with a warm ecru colors, and its Roxie napkins (B330), in dusty peach tones with multi-colored embroidery, will set the tone nicely without taking over the table.

Choose a centerpiece that fits the theme Just like the theme and tone, your centerpiece shouldn’t be overstated, but this is a good time to add contrast. If your main inspiration is neutral-colored linens, this is a good time to add more colorful floral arrangements. With its modern sculptural forms and minimal design, the ceramic Iwi vase from Habitat (B3,800) is perfect for showcasing bold, colorful flower selections, plus you can get creative by playing around with scale and forms with other interesting graphic vases. To add an eye-catching contrast, set the Iwi vase next to Ink (B2,900)—a Brought to you by Habitat

transparent glass vase in the same dark palette, or for a more standout piece, the red, earthenware Iza (B1,600) is also a great choice.

Layer dishes to add some personality Show some panache by layering different sizes of plates with different colors and patterns. Start with a large charger plate like the Image (B1,400) from Habitat—a flat porcelain plate with gold halo trim— then on top, layer a nice, classic white dinner plate like the Bistro (B410) to help accent the other decor on the table. For a final statement piece, place a dessert plate like the blue stoneware Keiko (B500) on top of the whole assortment for some contrast.

Different glasses for each drink This is where the attention to detail shines through. To keep things simple, have at least a water glass, wine glasses (red and white) and Champagne flutes ready. A combination of elegant and classic glasses can do no wrong for special occasions, like Habitat’s Bistrot (B360) for wine and Vienna (B1,990) for wine and Champagne.

Help set the tone with a beautiful fragrance Adding a subtle, elegant fragrance helps to add that last little bit of polish. For more intimate settings, fire up Organika’s Secret Rose Garden aromatic diffuser (B1,350) to create a luxurious and warm atmosphere.

Extra little details to take things further Not for every occasion, but adding candle light can do wonders to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The Home Candles from Jo Malone (B2,900) not only come in 19 fragrances, but they also make a fabulous decorative piece on their own.

Music goes a long way Possibly the most overlooked piece to the dinner party puzzle. A well crafted, listenable playlist in the background can nudge the tone of your evening in any direction you want. You need good speakers for the job. Our pick is the SoundLink Revolve Bluetooth speaker from Bose (B9,900), which is designed to maintain uniform sound quality no matter where it is placed in a room. It’s pint-sized body also makes it perfect for dinner settings.

Penang’s new resort is why you need to stay outside George Town

03

Penang’s “Miami Beach” is one of the few parts of Malaysia’s cross-cultural island and culinary hot-bed where you can actually kick back on the sand. The new DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang joins a small number of mid- and high-rise hotels that poke above jungle-fringed coves, offering 316 rooms and suites—simple but comfortably furnished in sandy shades, polished woods and Peranakan patterns—that start from B2,171 a night. Take the free shuttle bus if you want to reach the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town and the foodie paradise of Gurney Drive. Head in the opposite direction and you’ll get to Batu Ferringhi’s popular night market. The hotel itself boasts a spa, fitness center, pool and even a teddy bear-themed museum.

CHIANG MAI

03 Phuket Town just got the moody colonial cocktail lounge it’s been waiting for Inside a gray-painted Sino-Portuguese shophouse, Dibuk House (www.fb.com/dibukhouse) raises the bar for Phuket’s cocktail scene. Guys in waistcoats and white sleeves shake and stir ballsy craft cocktails—newschool pina coladas mixed with pineapple-infused rum and coconut skins; umeshu-and-bourbon topped with peanut butter and seaweed—before a soaring back-bar of booze and mirrors. Located slap-bang in the Old Town, Dibuk House is already pulling in collaborations with some of our favorite bartenders (Tropic City’s Arron Grendon was down there recently), while offering an oldschool colonial vibe to go with the on-point drinks. Simple Simple (goo.gl/ABmsD1) offers mixtures of matcha, milk and espresso and rose-infused lattes dressed up with Instagram-worthy finesse. Budget about B75-85 per drink. The menu also features classic baked goods and Western savory dishes. Enjoy your smoked salmon sandwich (B250) amid a relaxed vibe enlivened by potted plants, colorful flower jars and pops of vintage-green. Spread across two floors, the space is nevertheless pretty compact, so get there early if you want one of the best seats.

Leica is calling all budding Thai photographers. The German camera brand favored by the pros is setting up a holiday photo workshop—and it’s in Italy. HOT OFF THE PASS ON THE BAR

Notes from the Bangkok food scene

The buzz: The Fat Cow name has a solid reputation over on Lad Phrao for craft brews. Now they’ve moved to this second rooftop location.

01

Fat Cow rooftop bar serves stunning views and cheap homebrews

The decor: Fancier than anyone who knows the original might expect. Once the elevator opens, you are faced with an open-air space with no tall buildings to block the view. Pull up a Tolix chair on the fern-strewn terrace at about 5:30pm to catch the sunset. The drinks: Dutch owner, Manuel Lucien, is a big supporter of the local beer scene, going as far to say he’ll give pretty much any new brewer’s creation a chance. Two Ten Brewing’s New England IPA (6.3%, B180) gets its super-refreshing taste from liquid yeast (instead of dried yeast), while their West Coast IPA (B180) has an impressive 7.3% ABV. For serious bangfor-your-baht, ask about the bar’s own homebrew, which they sell at just B120/glass. Sloths Galaxy IPA (B160), made using only galaxy hops, is another of our favorites. Like most homebrews, the ABV nudges above 6%.

MOVE OVER MEJICO No more drag parties. No more guacamole smashed tableside. The Mexican restaurant at Groove CentralWorld, Mejico, has closed. Expect to see a new steak place rise to take its place.

The food: What is a craft beer bar without burgers? Their Fat Cow Australian beef burger will set you back B300, and comes with bacon, onion jam, pickles and aioli. But the real star is their fries (B30 extra)—we don’t know what they do, but you seriously shouldn’t miss them. Also try the traditional Dutch “bitterballs” (B180)—patties of succulent beef ragout in a crust. The music: Chilled-out deep house or electro-pop make for a tropical vibe. The crowd: Bangkok homebrewers and serious craft beer drinkers have proven perfectly willing to make the descent to Phetchaburi.

TURNING THE TABLES Chef Andy Yang, of the one-Michelin-starred Rhong-Tiam in New York, returns to Bangkok with a Thai-food chef’s table, Table 38, which ups the exclusivity: 12 courses of rejigged street-food staples for B4,900 (add B3,500 for wine pairing), limited to 12 diners per night. www.fb.com/ table38bkk

Why we’d come back: This is probably the cheapest, most casual rooftop bar you’ll find in Bangkok. 8/F, Metro Pratunam Boutique Hotel, 1091/236 New Petchaburi Soi 35, 095-003-4911. Open daily 4pm-midnight

This Jun 28-29, Le Normandie hosts two French culinary giants. Bangkok’s own Arnaud Dunand Sauthier (head chef of the Mandarin Oriental’s two Michelin-starred lauded French restaurant) joins forces with Richard Ekkebus of Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong’s Amber, which holds two stars of its own. It also ranked no. 24 in last year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants. The six-course lunch menu costs B5,500, while the eight-course dinner will be B9,800 exclusive of wine. Mandarin Oriental, 48 Oriental Avenue, 02-659-9000. Open Mon-Sat noon-2pm, 7-10pm

There’s a new chef in the kitchen at Phrom Phong’s hip all-day-dining cafe, Bangkok Trading Post. Phanpat “Ott” Khanchanakub does this light-filled, boutique resort-like space justice with a new Middle-Eastern inspired roasted chicken heavily coated in sumac spice (B520) and a Sicilian-style (meaning coated in an olive crust) grilled butter fish with lemon-basil mashed potatoes (B520). What you’ll really want to visit for, though, is the Sunday buffet—expect free-flow wine and sometimes even Champagne for your B2,900. G/F, 137 Pillars Suites, 59/1 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-079-7133-4. Open daily 7am-11pm

Food delivery app Foodpanda has been making connections with some of Bangkok’s favorite food vendors to offer piping hot bags of your favorite street eats to your door. We’ve been trawling through the app to see what’s on offer, and the list is pretty impressive, from Polo Chicken’s garlic-strewn barbecue (starting B130) to the old-school gooey goodness of Yaowarat Toasted Bread—still just B20 a piece. In total, they’ve got about 50 places to choose from, and delivery stays at B40. Now, if we could only get the app’s search function to work. www.foodpanda.co.th

Mozza by Cocotte

Mozza by Cocotte HH

Italian. G/F, EmQuartier, Helix Quartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 097-004-0072. Open daily 10am-10pm.

This pizzeria and Italian comfort food specialist is a runaway success. As many of EmQuartier’s restaurants flounder, its ground-floor spot with outside terrace is rarely anything but full to bursting. But busy does not necessarily mean good (remember Wine Connection?). The restaurant comes from the people behind Cocotte and Pesca. As with those two Med-leaning eateries, here you get a crowded, high-volume dining room that’s adeptly managed by a multinational swarm of waitstaff. Unlike its flashier siblings, there are no overbearing, luminous lights, just patterned floor tiling, brown leather banquettes and a small deli display which strive for an autentico trattoria vibe. Put it down to the bustling weekend trade, but our last visit found the kitchen’s output rushed, bordering on sloppy. The insalata salsicce’s (B340) barely browned slices of sausage scarcely resemble those pictured in the menu and give the rocket salad a stickiness that’s off-putting. The grilled octopus of the polipo grigliato (B520) also comes in a rubbery, underdone state, plopped in a sickly sweet corn mousse more suited to dessert.

Viva Thonglor HHH

International. 387 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-000-9698. Open daily 10am-10:30pm. BTS Thong Lo. Corkage B800 (max two bottles)

Viva Thonglor has existed in a few incarnations over the years (Viva Market, Viva21), but the massive, five-story complex didn’t get a ton of press until early this year when locally-famous Australian chef, Jess Barnes; (Opposite Mess Hall, Quince) emerged from his F&B consulting sabbatical to take the reins as general manager. Since then, Barnes has announced his retirement from the Bangkok food scene and headed back to Melbourne, but his menu remains, served in a sprawling building that has undergone a Commons-like metamorphosis (including the addition of a Sloane’s deli). The ground floor is strewn with hanging Edison bulbs, artsy portraits, bare concrete beams and cozy nooks that help set the tone for eclectically-dressed hi-sos, European expats and occasional groups of Japanese salarymen. Top it off with live DJs spinning disco tunes and you have a decent place to knock back a few cocktails (from B220) or a glass of Italian merlot (B295). For that matter, the barmen make a mean old fashioned (B260)—a pinch of orange, prominent whiskey flavors, but not too stiff. You can’t

Onto the pizza, Mozza’s main calling card, and there’s little to fault about the produce of the Carpi Salerno pizza (B760), pitched to us as the best-seller: the Parma ham is salty and slightly nutty, the stracciatella rich and plentiful, the tomato sauce packed with the requisite acidity. However, it’s the soggy base we take exception to, and the spongy crust which lacks any of those good air bubbles that a really satisfying hot-out-of-theoven pizza will give you. Then there are the prices. Starting at B420 for a margherita, Mozza’s pizzas are right up there among Bangkok’s upper crust: Peppina’s margherita starts at B290, Il Bolognese’s B280, for example, though admittedly Mozza’s does feature the fancier mozzarella di bufala. For the non-purists, the lobster-and-pea-topped Lupicante pizza comes in at B1,390. Starters, too, are one and all above B300. We’d expect less erratic execution for those prices, but a glance around the packed dining room— where truffle oil wafts through the air, and shellfish-topped pizza and pasta options are the norm—suggests there are plenty of people happy to pay them. And there are points in Mozza’s favor: a hefty “Lasagna Della Nonno” (B480) whose layers burst forth with beefy bolognese; a satisfyingly creamy tiramisu (B290); and a reasonably lengthy wine list. Unfortunately, it’s just not enough to win our hearts.

put Viva Thonglor’s menu in a box like “international,” “Thai” or “Australian.” Classic Western staples like Angus beef burgers (B430) and roasted half chickens (B450) rub shoulders with Patagonian toothfish (or as every other Bangkok menu calls it, “snowfish”), served with creative flavors of fragrant yuzu kosho and chimichurri (B630) and Chonburi-bred goat braised in milk and wine (B720)—the latter getting hit-or-miss reviews from our own staff. On our last visit, it was a miss. The flesh is falling-to-pieces moist, but tastes just too mild. Other dishes we tried also had balance issues. We expect the labne (a tangy Middle-Eastern creation similar to Greek yogurt) to add some sourness to the smoked eggplant salad (B350), but after a few bites it’s the only flavor present. Things get better with the beef brisket ragu (B450), which boasts subtle stabs of heat buried in-between soft packets of juicy shredded beef and perfectly cooked al dente pasta. A must-try dish we didn’t expect: the Ortiz white anchovies with roasted peppers and buttery bread (B350)—a moreish combination of salty-sweet flavors. To that end, Viva’s menu has enough high points and variation to merit repeated exploring. Mix in the vibe, drinks and layout and you have a good launch pad for night in Thonglor. You’ll likely find us here again.

Praya Kitchen brings forgotten Thai recipes to Surawong Road The buzz: Surawong Road’s new Marriott hotel is banking on the talents of a young, local chef, Attapol “X” Naito Thangthong, to boost their Praya kitchen all-day dining restaurant into a hub of forgotten Thai recipes. The decor: You’d be forgiven for thinking the well-worn, wooden Thai art motifs that take up entire walls were the genuine article. In fact, they’re recreations taken from temple murals, but still lend the vast open space a genuine sense of occasion. It’s all comfortable and relaxed, with friendly staff and easy-flowing music on in the background. A vast open-kitchen shows off the cooking preparation. The food: Chef X goes in for both ancient old family recipes— taken, he says, from his grandmother’s cooking—as well as more recent-but-forgotten kitsch classics. Take, for example, the Gai Ob Phu Kao Fai, or “Chicken Volcano” (B298). This whole spit-roast chicken gets doused in Mekhong whiskey and set alight tableside in a display that’ll be familiar to anyone who remembers Thai fine dining of yesteryear. Also on the menu is a crabmeat-loaded Southern tumeric curry (B258)—rich, creamy and

NNOD_BK 740_Jun 08_18_01_NEW.indd 20

perfect with a plate of jasmine rice—and beef-shank massaman curry (B238). The golden-fried oyster fritters dipped in chili sauce (B158) are another good shout. The hotel buffet costs B750 for lunch and B950 for dinner, or B1,200 on seafood buffet nights (Thu-Sun). The drinks: Cocktails make the most of tropical Thai fruits. The Asia Pacific Cooler (B325) sees vodka mixed with lychee liqueur, lychee puree and jasmine water. The Pa-N Da-N (B305) combines silver cachaca flavors of coconut, pineapple and honey. Bottled beers will set you back B125 while wine by the glass starts from 280. Why we’d go back: Because we didn’t get to try the seafood buffet night, which promises lobsters, sea crabs, river prawns and Hokkaido scallops for your B1,200. La Mesa Coffee Co.

NEW AND NOTED

12 Meet Bangkok’s latest private-dining experience

13 There’s a new Mexican joint opposite CentralWorld

14 This new cafe serves up New Mexico style

Fresh from stints at Suhring and Mezzaluna, Amie Baholyodin and Vee Passavee have opened up their home to a new private dining experience. The Cookhouse at Number 9 (9 Sukhumvit Soi 30, 086-5711773) sits down a quiet residential soi, where it welcomes in-the-know Bangkok gourmands for six-course tasting menus (B1,500/person) that the chefs create after you’ve filled in a questionnaire. Expect modern European dishes such as spiced crab tortellini with citrus mascapone or seared Hokkaido scallop with nulnja vichysoisse amid a warm setting. Guests (up to 18 of them) sit around a large wooden farmhouse table.

Quiero Mas (Arnoma Hotel, Ratchadamri Rd., 063-596-4424) is a food truck turned Mexican restaurant. Its founder, Oscar Perez Garcia, is a former chef of the Sheraton Hotel in Mexico City who went on to work for 10 years in Spain. After picking up a reputation dishing out guacamole with tortilla chips (B275), cheese nachos (B225) and quesadillas (B235-255) from a food truck, Garcia’s now settled down to offer a taste of Mexico alongside Mediterranean and Spanish flavors at this colorful indoor-outdoor spot.

Just a stone’s throw from BTS Udom Suk, La Mesa Coffee Co. (7/2 Sukhumvit Soi 68, www.fb.com/ LaMesCoffee) serves specialty coffees in an environment inspired by New Mexico’s desert wilderness. American co-owners and coffee enthusiasts Gary and Michelle Ford have filled the space with adobe -like arches and succulents that make for a picturesque setting in which to enjoy Snicker-flavored affogatos (B180), spicy orange mocha (B140) and other creative coffees. Don’t forget to try their in-housebaked flourless chocolate cake (B160)—dense, fudgy and served with fresh seasonal fruit.

01 CentralWorld’s new kiosk is a tealover’s dream The queues forming on CentralWorld’s second floor are thanks to Ditto Modern Tea (2/F, CentralWorld. www.dittotea.com), a new kiosk turning loose-leaf teas, fresh fruits and Belgian chocolate into dreamy-looking, indulgent drinks. Cold-brew teas (B135) come packed with 24 hours’ worth of fresh-fruit-macerated flavor, while the decadent chocolate, creamcheese, caramel and sea-salt tea (B135) is like liquid dessert in a cup. On the subject of dessert, they also serve their own baked treats.

03 Sala Daeng’s new

Already a booming place for cafe-hoppers, Kid Mai Death Awareness Cafe (1191 Ari Soi 1, 065095-6959) serves its lattes and photo opportunities with a side order of Buddhist concepts on life and death. These are writ large in quotes on the walls, courtesy of its philosopher-owner, Dr. Veeranut Rojanaprapa. His plan is for Kid Mai to educate young Thais on the inevitability of death—all the while enjoying hot chocolate with cream on top (B65) and chocolate smoothies (B85) with names like “Sickness” and “Old Age.” Lie in the traditional coffin to get a discount.

New Greek restaurant Aesop’s (120 Sala Daeng Soi 1/1, 062-567-7751) conjours an ouzo-fueled party atmosphere. This next-gen rebirth of a family-run restaurant from Sydney serves hearty Greek classics like eight-hour lamb shoulder (B1,500), chicken souvlaki (B380) and moussaka (think beef lasagna with eggplant in place of pasta sheets, B320) in a hall made for big, boisterous gatherings. After dinner, the place transforms into a dance floor where guests are encouraged to hurl crockery, as is Greek tradition, to a soundtrack of “Zorba’s Dance.”

Who makes Bangkok’s best… Gelato?

BK MAGAZINE FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018

23

Add milk to ice-cream, cut out the egg yolks and what do you get? Gelato, Italy’s dense-and-creamy alternative. Look for an elastic texture—good gelato should follow your tongue to the last moment with every lick—and powerful, condensed flavors. Here’s how we rate Bangkok’s biggest brands.

Crema

BK If regular ice cream is Ariana Grande, then Crema Pick! Gelato is Nicki Minaj—volup tuously thick and in-yourface. The elastic, dense texture reveals a flavor that’s soft, creamy and almost too sexy. In fact, it tastes literally like a chocolate bar only ice cool. But, like Nicki, too much can be a bit overwhelming. Verdict: She’s for keeps. Crema Lab, Avora 31 Residence, Sukhumvit Soi 31, 083-096-2894. Open daily 10am-9pm. www.fb.com/Creamabangkok

Ghignoni

Despite actually coming from Italy, this gelato shop’s chocolate treat comes in dead last on the list due to its icy texture. The saddest part is not how quickly it melts, but rather the watery taste and consistency when placed next to its rivals. Verdict: More ice than cream. 252/5 Silom Rd., 087-811-6462. Open daily 11:30am-11pm. www.ghignonigelato.com

Gelate

Eliciting mild shrugs from our tasters, this gelato tastes only faintly of chocolate and more like Ovaltine malt. That kind of thing might play well to the After You generation, but we prefer our cocoa to have an indulgent, rich flavor. Verdict: Meh. CentralWorld 3/F, 081-801-3324. Open daily 10am–10pm. www.fb.com/ gelatelovers

Minito Gelato

The texture might be creamy and smooth, but the flavor is muted. Light? Yes. Not too rich? Also, yes, which means unlike Crema, you can enjoy more than one scoop. Verdict: Pleasant enough. 222/146 Vibhavadi Rd., 095-561-5168. Open daily 6am-6pm. www.fb.com/ minitogelato

Ampersand Boutique

Is it just us, or do they sneak some booze into the mixture at Ampersand? There’s a definite liqueur-like taste to this chocolate offering. It’s not too icy—and is actually the slowest-melting of the bunch— but doesn’t quite have the perfectly elastic texture of a good gelato. Verdict: Cream with a kick. Baan Promphong, 147 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-0351. Open Tue-Fri noon-10pm; Sat-Sun 10am-10pm. www.ampersandgelato.com

Here’s to America

24

Drink Speak The other American whiskey terms you need to know

Bangkok’s bartenders distill the essentials to drinking American whiskies. SOUR MASH Sour Mash whiskey follows the same regulations as bourbon but the mash begins with leftovers from a previous batch, much like sourdough bread. The sour mash process gives a sweeter, deeper flavor to the final product.

T

oo long overshadowed by Scotch and Japanese single malts, American-born whiskies are finally finding the love they deserve among Bangkok whiskey drinkers. In the past five years, the number of imported bourbon and rye whiskies on the local market has swollen exponentially, in line with a growing consumer hunt for unusual, craft and quality spirits.

2 YEARS +

The latest arrival, Kentucky's small-batch Michter's, announced itself just last month, but its not the only name hoping to make inroads in Bangkok's American wiskey scene. “The number of American whiskies on the market here might have gone up by 50 percent, but that means from 10 labels to 15, not 50 to 75,” says Minway Chi, founder of Bootleggers Trading Co. and The 88 bar.

STRAIGHT Straight means the product has been aged for a minimum of two years. So, if a bourbon has been aged longer than two years, it’s called a Straight Bourbon.

There are two main types of American whiskey—bourbon and rye. The difference between them is basically the main ingredient: bourbon must be made with 51-percent or more corn; and rye must be made with 51-percent or more rye grain. Both must be made in the USA. No additives are allowed. The spirits cannot be distilled over 80-percent ABV. They cannot exceed 62.5-percent ABV when put into barrels to age. They must be bottled at no lower than 40-percent ABV. To be called “bourbon” or “rye,” the liquid needs also to be aged in freshly-charred American oak barrels, meaning the barrel is being filled with liquid for the first time after charring. If it’s not the first time a barrel’s been filled, then that makes your product an “American whiskey,” even if you have the ingredients and numbers exactly correct.

Rye

Bourbon is characterized by a sweet taste. “because of the dominance of corn,” says Chi, who name-drops Rebel Yell Bourbon, Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve as some of his favorites.

Rye has more complex flavor and can be somewhat more harsh. “When you make the main ingredient rye, the result has a spicy kick, some bottles more than others” says Chi. “To really taste the spicy kick in rye, seek out Rebel Yell and Rittenhouse.”

Bottled in Bond whiskeys have been aged for a minimum of four years at 50-percent ABV and produced in one season.“The system was created by the government to help distillers delay paying taxes on distillate until it is ready to be sold,” says Chi.

MOONSHINE AKA white dog or new make, moonshine is a white, unaged whiskey made from corn and traditionally produced illegally and untaxed. Nowadays, brands like Ol’Smoky and Georgia Moon (68th available at Wishbeer) are doing it legally.

Booking Busters

26

GRAND OPENING

Avani Hua Hin

Save yourself a fortune with these insights on the best times to book your flights. We asked travel booking app Skyscanner to give us the juice on the cheapest dates to book flights to our favorite destinations. They came back to us with what looked like the Enigma Code. But don’t worry, dear reader. We’ve managed to crack it, and are happy to report our findings on the absolute best times you can get travel deals. The main takeaway, to be fair, is not all that surprising: the earlier you can book, the better. We’d say give it 20 weeks if you can. But who’s got 20 weeks when Issey Miyake just announced the Tokyo stock clearance sale? Here’s how else you can save yourself a fortune. By Kankanok Wichiantanon

Tip no. 1: Book for Tokyo in summer Book your trip to Tokyo in June and Skyscanner reckons you’ll reap a 12-percent saving over other times of year, just so long as its 22 weeks ahead of time. That would land you in Tokyo for October—long after Sakura season but a beautiful, transitional time as the city enters autumn. The cheapest Tokyo flights we found right now are with Philippine Airlines at B10,020. Second insight: you’ll make roughly the same saving for flights booked in September for travel in January, making one of the cheapest wintery escapes around.

Tip no. 3: Start thinking about that UK trip now

Tip no. 5: Experience New York in the springtime

It’s the beginning of Britain’s summer, which means weather right now is guaranteed to be terrible. So why not visit in October instead, when the weather will be equally wet and terrible but your flight will also be cheap. Skyscanner’s saying a saving of nine percent on flights booked in June. And on the plus side: beautiful autumnal colours at Richmond Park. Emirates and Vietnam Airlines are both right now showing non-direct flights for between B23,000-25,000.

Man, it’s tough getting a deal to New York. The data shows that savings of six percent are the best you’re ever likely to see. To get that, try booking in November for travel in March, when leaves start making their way back onto Central Park branches and temperatures begin to warm (pack a coat though; we’re talking 17-18 degrees). The cheapest flights (non-direct) are usually with Middle Eastern carriers or Cathay Pacific, who all post prices right now between B29,000-31,000.

Tip no. 2: Book for Fukuoka in winter

Tip no. 4: Go to Hanoi for New Year

Everyone should visit Kyushu’s dreamy city of welcoming little izakayas and A.P.C. stores on every corner at least once. The savings to be had here are apparently huge should you book in November with a view to travel in March—wonderful news if you can make it for the end of the month because that’s when Fukuoka’s cherry blossom begins. So how much will it cost you, exactly? Well, current flights with the reliably cheap Philippine Airlines are just shy of B10,000. Could you really get deals of B7,500 in Nov? If so, we’d like to see it.

Those who know Hanoi in winter think of cool, icy-breath mornings sipping coffee so strong it could revive corpses; crisp and dry but overcast skies; brisk walks through criss-crossing, crumbling city blocks and the occasional banh mi break. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to experience Tet (Vietnam’s New Year), which can either be in January or February depending on the lunar calendar. Skyscanner’s top tip is to book in September for savings of 11 percent. Flights to Hanoi from Bangkok are regularly priced at just B5,000-6,000 (check Qatar and Thai before looking at the budget carriers).

Tip no. 6: Plan your Chiang Mai cool-season break in May-Jun Sadly, Skyscanner doesn’t give us the optimum prior-booking time for Chiang Mai (or what percentage you save), but we have it on good authority that May-Jun are the absolute best dates to book trips to Chiang Mai at any time of year (forget ever trying to get a deal in December).

*All percentage savings in this story are compared to the average price paid for the route over the past two years.

Overview: The former Ananda Hua Hin Resort & Spa has been taken over by Minor Group’s Avani brand, a mid-range name with 15 properties under its name. Rooms: The 185 rooms/suites and 11 villas come in subtle, earthy tones, accented with splashes of green for an organic look. The hotel as a whole blurs the line between modernist and traditional, contrasting square architecture with natural Thai textures, such as woven bamboo furniture. The lagoon pool villa is our favorite: its spacious 188-square-meters showcase oak-wood panels and wooden furniture for a natural yet modern look, topped off with free-of-charge afternoon tea and evening cocktails at the Avani Club lounge, as well as a special set breakfast menu reserved for villa guests only. Facilities: The Hammam spa room has a Turkish steam bath, which you can follow up with a relaxing massage (B1,500). Come evening, find your way to the resort’s jazz lounge for mellow blues with cocktails and mezze plates. Active vacationers can check out the fully-equipped gym and the array of watersports on offer, including sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding and yoga. Neighborhood: Set on a quiet beachfront in what feels like the middle of nowhere, it feels quite a distance from town, but it only takes about 15 minutes’ drive to reach the action. In case you don’t have a car, the resort’s handy van service will only set you back B60 per trip. Dining: Options include the oceanfront Brezza, which specializes in contemporary Italian-style grilled seafood and pastas (their freshly baked rolls with olive dip are to die for), as well as Thai/Western dining at Staa’s, where a huge selection of breakfast food is on offer. Jazz fans can head to Blue Biscuit for live music along with Creole-style tapas. For experiential dining, guests can choose their fish supper from the catch-of-the-day as they meet Bophut Bay’s local fishermen. Rave: The biggest plus of staying here is that it’s relaxing and super quiet—even when there are plenty of other guests around. The resort’s attention to green spaces supports this tranquil vibe, with the surrounding areas filled with trees, plants and blooming flower bushes. Rant: With such strong waves, it’s often impossible to take a dip in the sea at the resort’s beachfront area. On top of this, the tide has a tendency to come in to the point that it swallows up the beach, meaning you’ll often get stuck at the resort’s pool— not such a bad thing, but still. Price: Rates start at B2,960/night, but are higher for the lagoon pool villas, which come with direct access to the pool and a spacious sundeck with loungers for around B12,240/night. Why hasn’t #MeToo taken off in Thailand SUPREEYA RIANRAKWONG, 23, UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Will Bangkok ever have its #MeToo moment?

“I support the #MeToo movement but I don’t think it will work in Thai society. People don’t want to show what they’ve been through. They don’t want to come out in public because they are ashamed.” PORNTAVEE HOMSAMER, 25, AUDITOR

The whole world turned when Hollywood’s elite came forward with stories of sexual harassment. No longer just about Hollywood, #MeToo has spread around the globe—but not to Bangkok, where everyday sexual harassment goes unchallenged and unreported. Here, women and men share their stories. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj and Vick Charlermlapvoraboon

“One officer grabbed my crotch as soon as I stepped out of the car”

Metoo BK 740_Jun 08_18_New.indd 27

Nantaya, 29, management consultant “When I was 26 years old, I was invited to a ‘networking’ dinner by the CEO of the company where I worked. I thought it was a great opportunity, so I accepted his invitation. “It was supposed to be me, the CEO, his executive friend and his friend’s assistant. The assistant didn’t come, so I was left with two disgusting men trying to guess where my tattoos are and talking about their past drunken behavior. “When it ended, the CEO asked if I could take him to his driver waiting at the building’s ground floor. He asked me to stay still for a while when we got in the car, so we could sober up (we’d had two bottles of wine between three). “We talked about me going to the gym, then he suddenly touched my stomach to see if it was hard. I jumped. He let go and said, ‘You can let me know if you feel uncomfortable,’ and reached to kiss my cheek. “‘I am uncomfortable,’ I said. He touched my arm and hand when he left, and told me to drive home safely. “After that evening, I never accepted his invitations again, but he kept asking, calling and texting. He even asked his secretary to call me in for a ‘meeting.’ When I rejected, he would say I ‘think too much.’ This happened every day before I quit after just three weeks. “People who know my story and who work at the company say it has happened before. One of my ex-colleagues told me that he asked her before approaching me whether or not he should. Of course, she said no. It is absurd that a 45-yearold, married, with a 14-year-old daughter would dare to ask a female employee for such advice.”

Thanyarak, 22, student “Last March, I was out drinking with a group of friends—both male and female. Everybody was drunk so we crashed at a friend’s place, which is normal for uni students. “I woke up during the night because my friend was using his legs to lock me down, forcing my hand to grab his penis as he tried to force his fingers in me.

“I was going to keep this story to myself. But speaking publicly is me winning a fight inside myself. To change the perception of victimhood and sexual assault, I have to make a change. Everyone has the rights to speak up. “One of the reasons why Thai women don’t speak up is because of society’s backlash—’tra baap cheewit.’ Women still don’t realise that they are equal to men. They don’t want to break the norm of women keeping quiet. “Before the #MeToo movement takes off in Bangkok, we need more discussions about sex. Public conversations and knowledge about sex are so limited. The education system teaches us to avoid these situations, and not what to do if you are in one. “Media can help shape society’s perspective. Women are brought up to understand men’s bad behavior as ‘normal.’ ‘Evil’ women are raped as a punishment. Until lakorn (soap opera) directs our attention towards the problems, our society won’t change its perspective towards sexual misconduct.”

“I totally think Thailand needs #MeToo to raise awareness about this issue. Anyone can experience sexual assualt. #MeToo will help people to talk and give advice. I personally don’t blame religion or society for #MeToo not taking off. It’s up to the individuals themselves.”

NAPATSAWAN PUAPAIBOONVONG, 35, OFFICE WORKER “Thais don’t really care about this kind of stuff. They want entertainment news. Thai women aren’t outspoken enough to say ‘#MeToo.’ Someone needs to take a lead for others to follow.”

Somsak, 37, photographer “One night I was in a taxi on my way home after a late night out. I was pulled over by the police between Silom and Thonglor and they searched me. This was around 1:45am. “I’d been in this situation before, so I thought it was no big deal to be pulled over by police in the middle of night in Bangkok. They often set up a blockade and do random searches. “But that night, one officer grabbed my crotch as soon as I stepped out of the car. He did it before any other officers were nearby. It was clear that he wanted to cop a feel while nobody was watching. I freaked out. I was like, ‘wait, woah, what?!’ “When the second officer joined us, he began to do a ‘proper’ search, asking me to empty my pockets, then my bags and my wallet. “I let it slide because I thought it might be legal for cops to search anywhere like that.”

*All names in this story have been changed.

SARAWUT PROMSEAN, 27 NUNTHAWAT POUNGKAMRAPEEPAT, 23 PINYOPARK KOMALAJOTI, 29 GYM TRAINERS Sarawut: “We definitely support the movement. We believe that #MeToo will be a channel for people who have been sexually harassed to speak up.” Pinyopark: “Thai people are still afraid to speak up and even if we do, we’re not sure it will make much difference because people are not scared of the laws here.” Nunthawut: “Yea, I totally support #MeToo movement and want to see it happen in Thailand.”

Sala Daeng Soi 1 A slew of new openings has this part of Silom shaping up as one of Bangkok’s coolest ‘hood. By Caria Bua-on and Vicki Chalermlapvoraboon

Coffee & Breakfast You’re spoiled for choice. Thai -Venezuelan artisanal roasters Ceresia (G/F, Tisco Tower, 48/2 Sathorn Rd., 098-251-4327) have long set a high benchmark with their freshly roasted, singleorigin beans and delicious carrot cake. Recently it’s been joined by Roastology (21 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 062-381-833), a roaster-turnedcafe that whips out coffee (from B100), eye-catching,  non-caffeinated treats like its purple sweet potato latte (B130) and yummy Montreal-style bagels (from B50). For some fizz, check out Eureka (14/6 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 092-4499895), whose specialty is soft and velvety nitro coffee poured straight from the tap—try the salted egg latte (B120).

Lunch, Dinner & Drinks Much of the recent action centers on the Woof Pack building, a three-floor office-slashmini-mall that’s home to The Meatchop Butcher & Spirits (1/4 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 02-033-2709),

Guss Damn Good

whose combination of retro cool, premium steaks (grab a wagyu striploin at B900/300g) and potent cocktails has locals voting with their wallets. Upstairs sits Happy Endings (1/5 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 080-961-4524), an ontrend mix of neon lights and raw concrete that serves Vietnamese faves like beef pho (B200) and banh cuon (B150) to go with Asian-inspired cocktails. For something more Thai, head to next door’s bright-blue Hung-Sen (1/6 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 02-233-7455), whose classic noodle selection includes northern-style chicken khao soi (B120). Down the road, new Greek restaurant Aesop’s (120 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 062-5677751) is the next-gen rebirth of their 25-year-old restaurant in Sydney and promises an ouzo-soaked party atmosphere to go with souvlaki and mezze platters. The Japanese equivalent is Touka (Bandara Suites Silom, 75/1 Sala Daeng Soi 1), an izakaya hidden in a bamboo garden that’s all about grilled skewers and sake. Seiryu Sushi (25/2 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 02636-3342), meanwhile, serves

affordable maki and sushi amid a chill industrial space. Dessert’s a no-brainer: the homemade ice cream of Guss Damn Good (Sala Daeng Soi 1, 081-915-8111) is beloved throughout Bangkok (from B85/scoop).

Visit Sala Daeng is home to that rarest of things: an independent cinema. Bangkok Screening Room (2/F, Woof Pack, 1/3-7 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 090-906-3888) specializes in art-house flicks from across the world. Film tickets are B300. At the cinema’s entrance is a white-dominated art space that frequently hosts exhibitions, too.

Transportation Both MRT Silom and BTS Sala Daeng are mere minutes’ walk away.

Community With its tree-shaded sidewalks, Sala Daeng Soi 1 almost feels more like Ari than Silom. Make no mistake, you’re still in the center of it all. From Monday to Friday, office workers from the U Chu Li-

ang building crowd out the many affordable food stalls. At night, the street comes alive with the young and moneyed, drinking and eating out. You’ll find all the essentials here (pharmacy, salon, dentist), with the mall comforts of Silom Complex, Bangkok Christian Hospital (Silom Road) and BNH (Convent Road), and Lumphini Park all close at hand.

Accommodation Located at the intersection with Saladaeng Road is Kanikar Court (128 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 02-632-2721), whose time-worn facade harkens back to a different era of Bangkok condo. Here, 70-sq-meter rooms go for B20,000-22,000/month and 120-sq-meter rooms for B32,000/ month, which gets you access to a swimming pool, sauna, fitness room and garden. Nearby Saladaeng Residences (29/1 Sathorn Nuea Rd., 02-163-2112, www. saladaeng-residences.com), built in 2011 by PACE development, is a step up in the luxury stakes. A 65-sq-meter furnished room goes for B40,000-50,000—or it’s B15,000,000 to buy.

JAY SPENCER, FOUNDER OF THE WOOF PACK

“This unique neighborhood is evolving rapidly: independent new restaurants, galleries, coffee shops and bars serve the many creative companies dotted around this area.”
