GuavaPass vs ClassPass: which is best?
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP)—Just one day after the opening party of IconSiam, a mega-sized new luxury shopping mall in Bangkok, experts have warned that the Internet may be all but “used up” following the massive spike in Thai social media posts. According to the statement, the World Wide Web could not handle the number of Thais who got an invite or knew someone who got an invite or knew someone who knew someone who got an invite or who just took a boat over on the off-chance they’d get in, and then furiously posted to social media all evening on Nov 9, 2018. “We hadn’t predicted this day coming,” said British inventor Tim Berners-Lee, who first discovered the Internet in 1990. “But then IconSiam opened, and Bangkokians were actually posting the entire Alicia Keys set in 15-second bursts on Instagram stories. There just isn’t enough Internet in the world to take that shit,” added the decorated professor of computer science. His comments have provoked a firestorm back in Bangkok, where oversharing on social media is still widely accepted, and over 10 Instagram posts per day can go unnoticed. Pancake, a postgraduate student in communication arts at Chulalongkorn University, tried taking to Facebook to defend her 98 stories that included two dozen Boomerangs in front of the bathroom mirror and eight selfies with Taiwanese heartthrob Darren Chen. “First shark fin, then plastic bags, now Instagram! Farang need to get off our case and respect Thai culture!” wrote the irate student in a post that took over an hour to upload on the only crappy 3G network left. Still, Berners-Lee warned that Bangkok had more to lose from the Internet shortage than most countries. “The worrying thing is, they’ve not comprehended it’s so close to Wonderfruit,” said the expert. “Without Internet, they won’t be able to post pictures in headdresses on top of the Molam Bus or eating farm-to-table dinners at the Wonderfeast. If you can’t do that, frankly, what’s the point in going?” In reaction, IconSiam put out a statement defending its guests’ right to use up so much Internet: “For centuries, Bangkok has been awaiting an Exquisite Local Landmark to stand on the river as a Beacon of Thai Excellence for all world citizens to admire,” it said. “If the Internet has Sacrificed itself for this Dawning of a New Era in luxury retail, then it has died for a Noble Cause: telling people about our shopping mall.” International experts are seeking answers as to why Bangkok became so excited about a new shopping mall. As of press time, their only explanation was a big Adidas.

HOT OR NOT
SUAN THIP
Meet the group pushing to legalize marijuana in Thailand Arun “Max” Avery, 31, and Kitty Chopaka, 33, are two of the people behind Highland, the Facebook page dedicated to the benefits of cannabis. With Thailand reportedly poised to legalize medical marijuana by the end of the year, we spoke to them about what sparked the change.
“It [marijuana] is a cheaper, less harmful alternative to medicines currently available” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
Upfront_BK 751_Nov 23_18_03_new.indd 4
What is Highland? Kitty: An advocate group to try and legalize marijuana in Thailand through non-biassed education and knowledge-sharing. We are an informative provider, not dealers, though we get messages every day asking us where to get cannabis in Thailand—which we never answer. There is a lot of talk about making cannabis legal for medical use right now, what set that off? Kitty: The world’s change of use. Other countries are legalizing it, either we get left behind or jump on that train. What stage are we at right now? Max: They are aiming at the new year for the law to pass. Kitty: After that, it could be six months to one year before all the regulations are laid out. Does the Thai government support this? Max: Yes. They also don’t want cannabis to fall into the same business model as beer or tobacco, where there are only few main players—they want it to be available and accessible for everyone and even allow people to grow for themselves in future. Kitty: We don’t even talk [with the government] about how good or bad it is anymore as we’ve passed that step, we just speak about how fast it will be available. No one said no to recreational use, either—they just said one step at a time. Do you think super-conservative people will be against it? Max: The lack of official information means
many people have to rely on false information, so the government is planning to do communication work with Thai citizens. Kitty: We need to give them knowledge, so they can develop more informed opinions—if they are going to judge people they might as well have the knowledge to support it, right? Another thing that we are trying to push forward is the decriminalization of marijuana— there should be a certain amount that you’re allowed to carry. Why should Thailand legalize marijuana? Kitty: It’s a cheaper, less harmful alternative to medicines currently available. Max: It will build the country’s economy and create new jobs, as well as making the government more respected for legalizing it. What do you think is going to happen to the price of rice? Do you think rice farmers would rather grow marijuana? Kitty: This is Thailand, so as usual everyone will want to jump on the trend. There will be licenses that dictate how much they can produce, which will help. The market will become flooded at first and it will probably affect the price of palm oil, rubber and rice, but eventually it will settle down. What’s the hold-up then? Kitty: The government process—it usually takes months to move things forward here. Max: Previously, the government was worried that citizens wouldn’t accept it, but now they’ve done a poll and 99.13 percent agreed with marijuana legalization. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

PETA
This year, Michelin’s Jay Fai Award for We Don’t Just Do the Posh Foreign Stuff went to a restaurant in Nonthaburi run by its very own wok-wielding auntie. Banyen Ruangsantheia, 62, says she was oblivious to what Michelin stars were until she was up on stage with Gaggan. Way to go!
ELEPHANT POLO Here’s a little piece of news that got swept under the rug: Minor Group’s elephant polo charity event is gone. Poof. No more. After Peta kicked up a stink last year, the hospitality group has silently dropped the fixture on Bangkok’s social calendar and will, according to Peta, raise funds for elephant welfare another way.
BOXING BABIES Putting 13 year-old kids in the ring to kick the crap out of each other makes them great boxers in later life. Or at least that’s the logic employed by some people in opposition to a bill that would ban this madness. And all because one child happened to die last week.
BEARDS It’s over. Enough. Put away the mustache wax. Break out the razor. The era of the lumberjack retrosexual who spends more time in front of the bathroom mirror than chopping wood is as dead as those dripping fairy lights that used to hang from Thonglor trees.

Great wine list and cocktails
If you’re seeking for Thai food with creative twist dishes in Bangkok, you know that there are basically two types: the clumsily-made Western-fusion kind and the actually edible ones. You’ll be happy to find the latter here. They use bittersweet buffalo mozzarella to add subtle flavor to Buffalo Burger (B320), whose generous-sized patty is tender and goes well with squid-ink buns. Those who prefer something a little lighter can go with the Spaghetti with Corned Beef and Fresh Chili (B260) instead.
When it comes to design, we can’t argue with Greyhound Café’s chill, relaxing vibe. With its semi-industrial space, comfy cushions and blondwood furniture, the whole-package warm and vibrant—which is totally perfect for hanging with friends and family—complete with kids’ seats.
A glance at four-laned Nanglinchee road might not be the most pleasant things to look at, but down its side streets are worth a trek. Not far from Greyhound Café is Garden Atlas a green shophouse that looks like something torn from one of Kinfolk’s pages. The shop is a heaven for the green-thumbed who struggle to find a space for their plants to grow. Here, it mainly sells small plants and the pottery to store them in (from B120 for a tiny cactus and B100 for a pastel-color pot)—perfect for when you finally get around to doing up your apartment. In need of fresh air? There’s also Suan Plu’s nearby public park if you’re struggling to find a spot to jog around.
Thanks to its Happy Hour promotion (from 6pm-9pm daily), you get an additional glass (or a bottle) of wine when you order one. The options range from sparkling (B320/glass, B1,690/bottle) to Rose (B290/glass. B1,590/bottle). If wine isn’t your thing, there are also special cocktails with a collaboration between Greyhound Café and SangSom, like Equinox (B250) that lightens the strong SangSom with plum cubes and aromatic tea.

Everything on the menu here will have you buzzing, whether it’s the drinks topped in clouds of cotton candy or the signature Fluffy Unicorn Poop (B155)—a double almond brownie heaped with cookies ‘n’ cream ice cream and cotton candy. ADVERTORIAL
Welcome to ONYX, the Best Club in Bangkok ONYX, Top100clubs Dj Mag hosts a Halloween bash for the ages with Blasterjaxx In recent years, Bangkok’s club scene has taken a more international turn, with nightlife hotspots attracting DJ’s and performers from across the world to play high-energy, crowd-pleasing shows on a regular basis. Since this movement began, one club has seemed to stand out from the rest of the pack: ONYX Bangkok. The venerated DJ Mag, which publishes the world-famous “Top 100 DJs” and “Top 100 Clubs”, has awarded it “Best Club in Bangkok” several years running, and it’s not had to see why. Found in RCA, Bangkok’s clubbing mecca, ONYX is arguably the city’s best nightlife destination for both expats and locals alike. It boasts international-quality lighting and sound systems (blasting out Electro, House, Dubstep, Tribal, Hard Style and Trap depending on the event), a spacious dance area and also a host of VIP and lounge zones for those who want to sit and chat. In addition to the normal zone dance floor, which lets you get right up close to the DJs in action, there’s also a series of uberluxe VIP cabanas on the top floor that offer Champagne-fueled exclusive packages for party nights that spare-no expense (we’ve tried this, and it’s a lot of fun). On October 31, ONYX held one of the biggest
Halloween bashes of the year with it’s “Onyx & Greygoose Present Cruise Club "Halloween" Party Feat. BLASTERJAXX” event. To mark the event, the crew at ONYX decked out the entire entrance and interior with cruise-themed decorations, like neon sharks, lighthouses and pillars that mimic marine life. The house was packed with electronic music fans, and more than a few interesting cruise-themed costumes, as the Netherlands producer duo (only one of them, Thom Jongkind, plays the actual DJ sets) rolled out their patented style of hardedged dance music. The show had all the makings of the big-time sets fans have come to expect from Blasterjaxx shows—a highenergy crowd, blasting smoke machines, and lots of bass. It was a pretty clear display of why the producer team has made the DJ Mag Top 100 list for so many years in a row, and events like this are what make ONYX one of the best clubs in Bangkok. ONYX Bangkok—in cooperation with DJ MAG magazine—will host the DJ MAG Official Party on Friday, Nov. 23 featuring the world’s 25th-ranked DJ, Quintino. This event will take Bangkok’s party scene to the next level, and celebrates ONYX being a world-class club for the third year. For more information, check out www.onyxbangkok.com!
Voting for the next year’s Top 100 (both for DJs and venues) takes place from Dec, 2018 to Feb, 2019. Make sure to cast your ballot for ONYX in DJ’s Mag’s Top 100 Clubs! www.onyxbangkok.com

Wonderfruit Bangkok’s most talked-about art, music, food and wellness festival is back for round five this Dec 13-16. This year’s show still takes place at The Fields at Siam Country Club Pattaya, but at a new site about one kilometer away from last year’s action. The new, larger permanent home comes with added zones and venues—all built with foundations made of locally-sourced bamboo. Lucas Price How did your passion for graffiti start?
Hip hop became a powerful musical force when I was a kid, and in New York graffiti was part of that culture. My school friends started doing it, so I followed them. I was fascinated by this raw, immediate form of graffiti, and it’s still around in the way. I still draw, and I like what graffiti means: it’s to beat you up.
What is the main idea and concept for this recent collaboration? It is a combination of pieces which have poetry at their centre. Most of the work uses language as a starting point. There are very raw paintings, and the very tight meticulous paintings. Slick neon signs with ambitious messages and loose images of flowers taken using a low quality polaroids. It’s Duality.
Do you find what you're doing for AP Thai is more challenging? Making anything is always challenging. They are both rewarding in their own ways. It’s something you have to put your effort into. Graffiti-wise, you have to sneak out at 3am, avoiding the police and cameras (I’ve got caught a couple of times: no big deal.) This sounds scary, but you don’t need a gallery, press releases, website or wealthy clients to buy your piece. You might get caught, but once you’re done painting, it’s a success. It’s also a great opportunity to work in the context of living space. It’s not a traditional gallery set-up, and we can use
This must-see exhibition
shines a light on the contrasting
beauty of Bangkok The Duality showcases the city’s raw and polished sides in a curated living space With the arrival of the Bangkok Arts Biennale we’re getting exposed to more contemporary art than ever before. Now, a recent collaboration between three artists and AP Thailand is putting the concept of duality into the contemporary arts spotlight with their exhibition “The Duality”. First is Lucas Price, a contemporary artist who began his career as a founding member of one of the UK’s most prolific graffiti crews, Burning Candy. Price’s exhibition roll includes the likes of Tate Modern’s 2008 Street Art exhibition. On the other side is Terawat and Tarida, a creative design duo with deep roots in fashion with both Bangkok and New York City. The three have come together to create “The Duality”, an exhibition that interprets Bangkok’s contrasting beauty, from the raw to the polished, to create a world where harmony and a conflicted reality co-exist. We recently sat down with both artists to discuss the new exhibition, the concept of duality in their minds, and how it relates to Bangkok.
Brought to you by AP Thailand
several mediums to express the poetry of words and visuals.
What's your take on the concept of Duality? I've been very interested in the concept of duality. I think what interests me is what Zen Buddhists say about non-duality. You need duality to think of non-duality. It's like a mirror. It highlights the need for non-duality. Without darkness, you would never be able to see the light.
What’s with the giant canvas at the enterance? I took that from Roxy Music. I like the song and the lyrics and I guess this can be an opportunity to make a big text piece using a loose approach to mark-making as a reference to raw, spread-painted text graffiti. Bangkok has plenty rules and unfinished potential.
Tell us about your painting The Ghost Shower It's a painting of a fire extinguisher, and for graffiti artists, we use this as a tool to create arts outdoor— quick, powerful, and immediate. I used to prepare this object, pressurized the color and make a quick painting. The Ghost Shower is from a song. I carefully selected the words, phrases and marks to be placed on the objects then painted them together to make a bold connection. When you use fire extinguisher to make painting, it rains paint everywhere and that is also my representation of ghost showers.
Teerawat and Tarida Do your styles co-allign with each other?
I think our lifestyles are the same, but it’s our approaches that are different. I’m quite delicate when it comes to aesthetic details, but when it comes to practical usage and seeing things in a bigger picture, Meow can fill up what I lack. During this project, I ended up putting a lot of delicate details, but then meow took a second look and suggested that it would be overwhelming in a place to live, so we scaled it back. That’s how our different style work together.
What’s your take on the Duality of Bangkok? Our take for the theme turns out to be a woman in Bangkok. We used a silhouette of flower petals to symbolize Bangkok’s diversity. Each petal can represent several things: some can reflect our long-lasting culture like the traditional female dancer while others that look sharper and stiff can depict the bustling nature of the city.
Tell us about this Petal Rooms We’ve designed this room for a woman that isn’t bound by colors. It can represent a feminine luxury from its
Life Asoke Hype – The Supremacy of Both Worlds
19
golden tableware to other sparkling features in the room. But, it also shows the stark contrast between two things that, in turn, harmonize with each other, like how I chose to blend navy blue with this warm orange and how those soft and organic shapes crash with the sharp ones.
Which detail do you think best represenats the image of women you're trying to conjure? I like the carpet. At a glance, it appears like a flower, but if you're looking closer, you can see the abstract forms that fuse these two color schemes between the hot and cold. I love the concept because sometimes what you see from afar is not entirely the same when you stand close to it.
Do you find this task more challenging compared to what you usually do? I guess everything has different challenges. When I do fashion design, I need to be more concerned about creating something that matches the wearer. For this, I think it is more challenging to create a lively atmosphere that people want to stay in. But in any case, I love how our work can interact with people in different ways.
The latest addition to AP Thailand’s luxury condominiums Life Asoke Hype reflects supreme luxury in eclectic design, and introduce seamless blend of art and living space as one. The Duality Exhibition will last to December 15 as a part of Friends of BAB.

Singapore Slinging Forget about the packed tourist traps getting props from Asia’s 50 Best—these new alternatives will blow your socks off. By BK Staff 78 Alkofelic
Nineteen80
Laying claim to being Singapore’s first dedicated coffee cocktail bar, this spot on Purvis Street will have you buzzing with their caffeine-fuelled creations featuring single-origin Ethiopian beans, brewed fresh daily. Classic creations like their Old Fashioned Coffee and Espresso Martini sit alongside more creative concoctions like the heady Flying Singaporean—a mix of absinthe, XO and coffee—or the Ice Boozy Alkofee, which mixes Cointreau, brandy, Kahlua, coffee and Irish cream (all SG$15).
Enter through a pink vortex into what looks like the set of Stranger Things—lines of vintage arcade games surrounded by cassette tapes and nostalgia-laced ‘80s artwork, all awash with neon lights. See if you’ve still got a knack for Space Invaders or Pac Man (arcade tokens are complementary) as you sip on a Malibu-based Club Tropicana (SG$20) or a “Super Disco Blend” blue lagoon (SG$20/ glass, or SG$70/ jug) featuring yuzu juice to DJs spinning everything from ‘80s to ‘00s beats.

Amrith The reception space of The Song of India—Singapore’s only Michelin-starred Indian restaurant— has been transformed to accommodate this creative cocktail bar. With two experienced mixologists at the helm, Mark Tay (Nektar) and Edwin Poh (Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall), drinks live up to the bar’s name, meaning “nectar of the gods” in Sanskrit. Themed around the restaurant’s dishes, the vodka-based Katong Laksa (SG$26) makes use of laksa broth and shrimp essence, garnished with strands of rice noodle, while the Hainanese Chicken Rice (SG$26) features sesame-washed rye with a side of steamed chicken slices. If you’re getting on it, order a teapot of Long Island-style King Willem’s Tea Party (SG$22). 33 Scotts Rd., Singapore, +65-6732-1365. Open Mon-Thu 5-11pm; Fri-Sat 5pm-midnight
Fancy This low-key chill-out spot is somewhat at odds with its name, featuring clean white walls, a white C-shaped counter, and just 16 bar stools. Affable bartenders Sin Kim Shin and Jayden Ong will make you feel at ease as they serve up gimmick-free concoctions from their flower-inspired Pollen menu (all SG$22). 35 North Canal Rd., Singapore, +65-98185151. Origin Bar Get in the spirit of adventure at this bar and restaurant based around the island’s trading history. From the Shangri-La Hotel lobby, enter through a wooden turnstile into a locomotive-themed space that looks like a romanticized pitstop on the Orient Express. Drinks revolve around local spices and produce, like the eponymous Origin (SG$22)—a gin-based cocktail made with sugar cane honey, nutmeg, pepper, charred pineapple and lime husk wine. Dishes trot the globe, specializing in wagyu and Angus beef from Ireland, Japan and Australia (from SG$48 for a 280g flank steak).

The latest addition to the resort’s fleet of swanky floating villas is a two-story stay, called “Muraka” (meaning “coral” in the local Dhivehi language), set right amid the turquoise waters. Instead of counting the stars, you’ll be playing spot-the-fish from your glass-walled bedroom surrounded by vibrant coral, while an above-water “relaxation deck” lets you catch some (sun)rays. You’ll have to fork out B6.6 million for a minimum four-night stay, inclusive of a personal chef and access to a private boat.

As for the rooms, there are two new types on offer: the 56-sq-meter SO Lofty Pool Access sits on the ground floor adjacent to the pool and boasts a 40-sq-meter private terrace and garden (starting at B4,650/night); and the two-story SO Comfy Pool Access is an open-plan space with square terrace, tiny lawn and big sofa lounger next to the pool (starting at B4,250/ night). On Dec 1, celeb chef Chalerm “Ian” Kittichai (Issaya Siamese Club) will join forces with the molecular minds behind Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin. Sra Bua’s Danish founder, Henrik Yde Andersen, will be in attendance together with his local head chef, Chayawee Sutcharitchan, to cook a six-course dinner alongside Chalerm for just one night at the Siam Kempinski hotel restaurant. Expect theatrics in the B5,800 menu (with wine pairing)—Yde Andersen’s cooking regularly pushes classic Thai dishes into brave, unrecognizable new directions. None of the dishes will be revealed until the night (the chefs tell us they don’t even know what each other’s cooking). 15 Thonglor’s hottest new cocktail bar has arrived
16 Take a trip to Italy with this black-tie musical gala
Thonglor just welcomed another exciting new cocktail bar. Liberation comes from the team behind Rabbit Hole and promises quality cocktails created by three big local names: Kitibordee “Gov” Chortubtim from Backstage, Krit “Joey” Parkobdee from Tropic City and their own Suwincha “Chacha” Singsuwan from Rabbit Hole. They’re still in that super early opening stage, which means that the menu and prices have yet to settle down, but what you can expect for certain is a central, walk-around bar that would look at home in a six-star hotel—all wood-paneled walls and waistcoat-wearing service staff. Sukhumvit Soi 49, 081-822-3392. Open daily 7pm-2am
On Dec 7, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok (Royal Ballroom, 48 Charoenkrung Soi 40 [Oriental Avenue], 02-659-9000 ext. 7405) will be hosting “The Taste of Music,” a charity gala dinner and concert to celebrate 150 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and Thailand, in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Bangkok. The black-tie affair will kick off with cocktails, followed by an Italian dinner by executive chef Dominique Bugnand, accompanied by a musical ensemble playing masterpieces by legendary Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini. An eight-seat table will set you back B36,000 net, inclusive of entry, dinner and free-flow wine.
Siam Paragon has teamed up with Gastronauts Asia to present a Cross-Concept Pop-Up Series, in which a group of chefs from abroad are staging “takeovers” of restaurants throughout the mall. On Nov 23-24, pastry chef Fabrizio Fiorani, formerly of Italy’s three-Michelin-star La Pergola and currently of Tokyo’s Bulgari Il Ristorante Luca Fantin (No.28 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list) will conduct a chocolate masterclass with afternoon tea (B900) and a dessert dinner (B1,900) at Laduree (M/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-129-4771) with sparkling wine pairings (B1,200).
CHAIN REACTION There are almost too many local restaurant expansions to mention: Bangchak-Srinakarin’s got a new Arno’s; Sukhumvit Soi 31 now has its own Shakiriki; Thonglor its own version of Teppen; Ratchapreuk has welcomed Isaan fave Phed Phed; Nanglinchee has a Greyhound Cafe; and Teddy’s Burgers has a new look on Sukhumvit Soi 49.
OUT OF JAMAICA At W District’s Jamaican Eatz (095-9459738), you can get Caribbean-inspired pies and rotis (beef, chicken, pork or jerk chicken) as well as coleslaw, coconut rice, and stewed beans in simmered BBQ sauce. For something sweet, check out their dessert patties—try the Pina Colada Pie with vanilla bean or salted caramel ice cream. They’re currently offering free delivery and six gourmet pies for B599.

We asked around. Here’s where Bangkok’s French community really eats French food. By Megan Leon
El Mercado
Marine Qotbi, Business Development Manager at Italthai Hospitality Company “My favorite is Le Cabanon, which is located in an old Thai house that seems like a small French cottage. The specialty of chef Martine Pailloux is the seafood, and her lobster is a must-taste— simply but perfectly cooked in the oven and served with an incredible lobster bisque sauce. Even the seafood platter is amazing and comes with four different kinds of sauce—the aioli is so good you can eat it alone with bread!”
Jonathan Valdman, Head Baker at Amantee Bakery
Agate Wak, Sales Account Manager at Khiri Travel Thailand
“J’aime is definitely my favorite place to celebrate. However, I can’t say I have a favorite French restaurant or dish because it all depends on the occasion and feelings of being with my family, my wife and my friends. A relaxing afternoon at Le Cabanon is the best place to contemplate ideas for the bakery with my wife—and a good glass of wine.”
“Loulou Forks and Glasses is my favorite, mostly for the beef tartare prepared with a knife. This very traditional dish was already one of my favorites in France, but it’s not easy to find a good one abroad. Served with a green salad and homemade French fries, it’s a piece of France on your plate. And the little bonus is the fantastic tropical backyard where you feel out of time and out of Bangkok.”
Delphine Thouvenot, AFP Bureau Chief (Journalist)
Regis Levy, Editor at Le Petit Journal
“My favorite place is El Mercado for the French mussels. All their seafood, including the oysters, is imported from Europe daily and has that cold sea taste that is completely different from Thai seafood. So, it’s not a very environmentally-friendly choice, but very nostalgic. The location is beautiful, with a small yard that has French radio playing. I also enjoy Rendez-vous du Lys, which does excellent meat, snails and andouillette. They have a nice garden where you can have lunch or dinner in the shade and also play petanque.”
“A dinner in the relaxed atmosphere of El Mercado’s patio takes me back to French summer evenings. The freshness of the seafood platter reminds me of the iodized scent of our Atlantic coast and the delicious saucisse de Montbéliard aux lentilles is to die for with a glass or two of biodynamic Chassagne Montrachet ‘Vieilles vignes’ from Burgundy. Another place I like is Bacchus & Co, a typical bistro where I can eat frog legs “a la Provencale” and, every first Wednesday of the month, couscous royal. If we are talking about French gastronomy, I love J’aime by Jean-Michel Lorain.”

The buzz: Ari is stepping up its cocktail game with this dramatic new neighborhood speakeasy hidden inside the boutique Josh Hotel. The decor: To gain access, you have to ask for a keycard at the front desk as if checking in to the hotel. Once inside, you’ll find a tiny 1920s-style space painted in deep red and surrounded by mirrors. Two small screens play host to quirky movies like Amelie, adding to the cozy feel. The drinks: Hidden away in this secret room, The Key’s cocktails reveal stories of owner Mr. Josh’s travels. If you think Ari cocktails are all simple and easy-drinking, think again, as the signature cocktails here are (very) spirit-forward. If you’ve had a long, hard day, we suggest you start with the punchy Sazerac (B420), which combines Hennessy VS, Bulleit Rye whiskey, Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, a touch of syrup and a final spritz of absinthe—all alcohol, basically. The Marilyn 1950s offers slightly easier drinking, with vodka, Malibu, lime juice, honey syrup, cinnamon syrup, grapefruit bitters and smoked cinnamon (B380). The El Presidente Twist (B380) makes the perfect after dinner drink, with Diplomatico rum, dry vermouth and a nice aroma of thyme. The crowd: Sophisticated professionals who enjoy the finer things in life. Why we’d come back: Gone are Ari’s wishy-washy cocktail days—this place joins the ranks of Frank Mansion to become the start of something special for the cocktail scene outside of Sukhumvit. Hidden behind a line of dense trees and bushes surrounding 137 Pillars Suites hotel, Phrom Phong’s hip all-day-dining cafe feels far removed from back-street traffic jams. If you happen to find your way in, the lightfilled, boutique resort-like space is charming: colonial-style tiles and old-school explorers’ equipment sit amid soaring glass walls, high ceilings, cool marble tables and herringbone floors. The place has become the neighborhood’s go-to brunch spot, and it’s hard to argue with the creative comfort food—fluffy quinoa pancakes (B250) come layered with grilled bananas and olfactory whipped orange butter; the Spanish-style farmer’s omelet is packed with boerewors sausage, goat cheese and roasted pimento pepper (B290). The eggs Benedict (B340) is served with smoked salmon and sauteed spinach on a buttery baguette, though we found the hollandaise to be liquidy and overly tart compared to the creamy, slightly sweet sauce we expected.

Italian. G/F, CRC Tower, All Seasons Place, 87/2 Wireless Rd., 02-038-2184. Open daily 11:30am10pm. BBB-BBBB F
Visit Nonna Nella on a weeknight and you’ll find a familiar scene of office workers guzzling wine and chowing down on pizza and pasta surrounded by decorative wine barrels, inspirational quotes and graffiti murals. Chef Francesco Lenzi’s follow-up to Lenzi Tuscan Kitchen does away with the starched tablecloths and upscale Italian moodiness of his fine-dining institution, but there’s no trading down with the food. This is hearty, wholesome Italian fare that goes toeto-toe with the best in town. When it comes to produce, Lenzi has a backstory few can match, sourcing cured meats and cheeses from his generations-old family farm in Tuscany. These star in cold-cut platters (from B450) and the likes of the salsiccia salad (B480), a mound of fresh rocket, Parmigiano-Reggiano, tomato and juicy sausage that excels in sheer simplicity. Arguably the main draw is the pizza (from B280), whose light 72-hour fermented dough results in a chewy crust with just the right amount of charring and no hint of sogginess. Here, basic is best, with the lip-smacking Napoletana topping (tomato,
Moving on to the main menu, you get an even greater selection of comfort dishes from around the world—something we find far more exciting than their brunch menu. The grilled butter fish tastes amazing with its crisp skin coated in a crunchy olive crust, piled on top of smooth lemon-basil mashed potatoes (B520); the baked Petit Camembert (B550) with rosemary and truffle oil is a must-order with its almost custard-like interior wrapped in a slightly chewy, golden exterior—perfect for dipping breadsticks. However, it can be hitor-miss—the Middle Eastern-inspired roasted chicken seems to be heavily coated in sumac spice (B520), but tastes under-seasoned and a little too dry, whereas the Bali-inspired beef rendang (slow-simmered beef chuck with rice and sauteed veg, B440) offers a nice balance of fiery spices. For dessert, an explosive chocolate lava cake (B280) is made something special with the addition of rich and creamy whipped mascarpone and honey ice cream. The mango panna cotta (B280) with vanilla-infused banana and aromatic coconut sauce is a comforting, smooth, treat with Thai-inspired flavors. While the sleek, light-filled space and attentive hotel service make for a decent dining spot, we wouldn’t recommend this over Toby’s or Roast for brunch—instead, head here for lunch or dinner for a taste of their real strengths.
mozzarella, anchovies and capers, B280) allowing the wood-fired smokiness of the base to shine through. When it comes to pasta, the tagliatelle al cinghiale (B520) hits all the right notes with its rich, meaty wild boar ragu sauce and al dente ribbons of perfection. The arista di maiale (pork loin scallopini, B500), with its sharp caper and lemon sauce, is exceptional—we just wish the thin slither of pork were, oh, about three times the size. With acoustics that verge on ear-splitting, lighting seemingly designed more for Instagram shots than mood, and tables squeezed tightly together, Nonna Nella’s open dining room is a better fit for after-work gatherings than for first dates. However, there’s enough charm that we wouldn’t be surprised to see it follow the expansion route of a certain other Bangkok pizza player. From behind the U-shaped bar that snakes its way around the room, you can watch the kitchen team energetically doing their thing. On our last visit, Lenzi himself joined the eager-to-please waitstaff in working the tables, offering recommendations and doling out the occasional sample. Even if Nonna Nella isn’t particularly cheap (a meal for two can easily top B3,000), it still feels like good value for money. Throw in a solid four pages of Italian wines (from B320/glass) and easy-todrink cocktails (including a mean Aperol Spritz, B280), and Bangkok has a welcome contender for no-nonsense Italian dining.

Lola serves up a playful take on Italian-American classics The buzz: Another alluring spot by the people behind Phrom Phong’s flashy, smash-hit bistro, Cocotte, Lola by Cocotte busts out Italian dishes with American twists, creating crossovers that are playful yet comforting. The decor: Taking over a corner on Ekkamai Soi 12, Lola occupies an open glasshouse venue attached to its distinctive Mediterranean-style sister restaurant Pesca—a setup which aims to reflect Lola’s combined experiences of both Italy and New York’s Little Italy. It’s undeniably fun and eclectic, combining colorful chairs, flamboyant Portuguese-style tiles, neon-lit signs and vintage picture frames. The food: Expect twists on American favorites—the Cheeseburger Pizza comes topped with ground beef, pickles, burger sauce and a generous drizzle of thick cheese sauce (B390), while the satiating XXL Burger “Say Cheese” offers a 600g wagyu patty, bacon, fries and a double helping of cheese (B1,190). The pasta is the real showstopper, freshly made in-house, with indulgent options like the Cheesy Ravi-

To finish off, satisfy your sweet tooth with a creamy slice of New York berry cheesecake (B230) or an ultra-luscious vanilla-infused pannacotta (B230). The drinks: The imaginative cocktail list leans on the girly side, with offerings like the colorfully polka-dotted Modern Art (B300), which mixes amaretto, lemon, egg white, bitters and ground nuts, or the Polycat (B300), a light, aromatic concoction of Absolut vodka, elderflower and lychee liqueur, peach foam and grenadine. Wine by the glass is also available. Spain’s Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva 2012 (B280) or the Australian Wyndham Estate Bin 222 Chardonnay 2016 (B220) are generic but affordable palate-pleasers. Fairy lights and a large neon red “Dumbo” sign light up the mishmash of chairs overlooking the BTS, as guests sip on San Miguel (B100) and cocktails like the Dumbo, with bourbon, mint, brown sugar and orange peel (B240).
Happy Drinks Wine & Spirit Shop (76/9 Nanglinchee Rd.) has popped up in Sathorn, offering a new outlet for their wide selection of unusual offerings, including many items that are almost impossible to find outside of bars in Bangkok, such as biodynamic wines, syrups and whiskeys at both retail and discounted wholesale prices (12 bottles or more).A bottle of The Pump Cabernet Sauvignon— costs B430 versus Villa’s B499, Monkey Shoulder for B1,555 versus Villa’s B1,750 and Wild Turkey 81 for B1,020 versus Villa’s B1,229, it’s well worth the trip.
Soi Sawatdi’s Lily Cafe (205 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 089-225-5077) brings with it a mix of modish design elements: hanging Edison bulbs, Scandi-chic gray-white furnishings, gray marble flooring and sophisticated Japanese-style light woods. Thanks to high ceilings and windows, the space is super-bright, resulting in an outdoorsy feel that’s enhanced by tall potted trees and hanging rattan swing chairs. Go for a cooling Iced Ball Cold Brew (B150)—beans from Columbia—paired with a freshly-baked choux cream (B40) or hazelnut croissant (B70), or a Lily Blossom Tea (B100)—butterfly pea tea with a lavender scent—alongside a puff pastry spinach and ricotta basket (B100).

21 Forget Tex-Mex, Sathorn’s new spot is the real deal Sitting pretty above thriving Latin-themed party spot Revolucion, Sathorn’s new Mexican La Lupita (2/F, 50 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-235-4822) makes no concessions to run-of-themill Tex-Mex flavors. Aburst with color, the restaurant’s vibrant walls pop with a freshly-painted abstract mural, while tables are adorned with colorful bandana napkins and little Mexican trinkets. Made fresh daily under the watchful eye of Mexican chef Sergio Velazquez, the corn tortillas are deliciously pliable yet sturdy enough to hold the pile of steak confit and guacamole in the Tacos Suaderos (B120) and the spicy, citrusy Ceviche Acapulco (B220) tastes as if it’s been plucked fresh from the Pacific.
22 Get “saucey” at this chicken shack Bringing a dash of beach vibes to the backstreets of Sathorn, Saucey Chicken and Beer Bomb (44/6 Sathorn Soi 8, 02-297-0393) is all about chicken drenched in six saucy flavors: signature (chili paste, garlic, shrimp oil); original (soy sauce, palm sugar); African teriyaki (teriyaki, wild honey, aged ginger); Isaan jaew bomb; Seoul sauce (Korean chili paste); and hot BBQ (tomato paste, dry chili, vinegar). Go for the lunch set (B159), which comes with five pieces of chicken, sticky rice, coleslaw and pickled vegetables, or head there after work for vodka slushies and happy hour beers (buy-two-getone-free) on their beachy, turquoise, palm-fringed terrace.
23 Charoenkrung carnivores are flocking here Taking over what was formerly a humble smokehouse near the Charoenkrung-Chan intersection, Mahasan Burnt & Bowl (1843 Charoenkrung Rd., 086-960-5858) remains under the ownership of one of the original store holders. Around four or five tables can be packed into the simple, homely living room space, backed by a green tiled wall. Here, locally-sourced meats are served, spanning cooked-to-order charcoal-smoked T-steaks (B580/ 500g), sous-vide grilled cow tongue (B270), braised roasted beef stew (B220) and pork steak (B280), as well as a number of rice dishes.

Who makes the best… almond milk? Almond milk is more than just a dairy alternative. Buoyed by Thailand’s growing health-conscious movement, more local brands are joining international bignames in creating this creamy, nutty milk using their own different ingredient combinations. Here, we put the most commonly available almond milks to a blind taste test. By BK Staff

Ingredients: Almond milk from whole almonds (94%), sunflower seeds (5%), organic coconut nectar (1%) Made in: Thailand Nice and thick with the most almond-y flavor of all, this full-bodied milk tastes exactly like it’s supposed to. Each gulp comes with the aroma and taste of roasted nuts with just the slightest of burnt notes. Verdict: A nutty hit.
Ingredients: Almond milk (96.6%), raw cane sugar (2.7%), calcium carbonate (0.3%), salt (0.1%) Made in: USA Despite tasting of artificial vanilla, this remains the blandest of the contenders. Not only that, the milk also has an off-putting musty smell. Verdict: Plain Jane.
Ingredients: Organic hazelnut milk (62.84%), organic almond milk (31.93%), organic unbleached sugar (3%), rice cream (2%) Made in: Thailand Quite watery in texture, the milk packs a strong hazelnut aroma and flavor, though there’s barely a trace of almond. Verdict: Very nutty, but not almond milk.
Ingredients: Almond milk (93%), organic coconut nectar (4.5%), sunflower paste (2%) Made in: Thailand Tastes very much like soy milk with only a faint scent of almonds, which we assume were only very lightly roasted. Not too sweet, but also not bland. Verdict: Drinkable.
Ingredients: Almond milk (95.48%), cane sugar (2%), sea salt (0.5%) Made in: USA Though it entices with a nice nutty scent, the milk tastes of nothing much at all, as if it’s more water than almond. Verdict: Diluted.
Ingredients: Almond milk (96%), cane sugar (3%) Made in: Australia Fresh and clean, this mil k tastes like homemade stuff. With lumps of curd adding texture, it also looks the part. Just a hint of sweetness means it’s mild enough to pair with just about anything or drink on its own. Verdict: So fresh and so clean.
Ingredients: Soy milk (89.75%), almond milk (5%), sugar (4%), oat milk (1%) Made in: Thailand The thickest of all with an orangey-brown color, this milk is also very much on the sweet and creamy side. The nutty aroma is somewhat overpowered by the flavors of oats and soy, which makes total sense when you check the labeling. Verdict: Sugar rush.

S fitness startup ClassPass has launched in Bangkok and is going head to head with the Asia-born GuavaPass in a battle for the city’s fitness fans’ hearts. ClassPass differs to GuavaPass in that rather than dishing out unlimited classes, it offers a credits system whereby top rated studios and peak times cost more credits than less-prime studios and offpeak times. ClassPass has already launched in Singapore and is sweeping through Asia, opening up in cities across the region over the coming months. Here, we look at the pros and cons of each system.
Pricing ClassPass: 150 credits to book 2537 classes in one month: B2,499 GuavaPass: Unlimited classes, 3 visits per studio, 6-month validity: B3,199 Here’s how the pricing and functionality differs. ClassPass credits operate on a sliding value based on time, location and popularity. You could use that to your advantage, taking more classes at off-peak times and repeatedly visiting your favorite studios throughout the month. ClassPass also has no limit to the amount of times you can train at your favorite gyms—a big plus for many members. But GuavaPass’s superior price means that you have no limit on the number of classes you take in that six months, beyond the fact you can only visit each location on its books three times. Higher and lower packages are also available at both studios.
FeatureFitness_751_Nov 23_18_03_NEW.indd 34
No. of affiliate studios ClassPass: 148 GuavaPass: 72 It’s hard to argue with those numbers. While many of ClassPass’s superior studio-count does stretch well outside the city center, it incorporates specialist-interest places like Sor Vorapin Muay Thai and Lad Phrao’s Vision Swimming Academy.
Deals ClassPass: 1 month free trial GuavaPass: 20% discount on 15-class package (from B4,499 to B3,599) or 10% discount on 10-class package (from B1,399 to B1,259) While the deal at ClassPass here looks hard to resist, we know from personal experience that, since ClassPass’s arrival, GuavaPass has been treating its customers pretty sweetly, letting them extend unused credits into the next month for free. ClassPass’s first-month-forfree trial locks you automatically into a monthly plan that you actively have to cancel, otherwise it will auto-renew and bill your credit card. Several online comment forums de-

tail bad experiences with canceling plans or dealing with ClassPass customer service. Guava has now also introduced a function that lets you pause your account, meaning the clock’s no longer running on credits when you’re on holiday.

Exclusive Studios ClassPass: Includes Absolute You, BASE, Physique57 GuavaPass: Includes F45 Training Asok, The LAB, Surfset Thailand The competition is real, and studios are being offered an ultimatum over which pass system to side with. As a consequence, ClassPass has already won many of downtown Bangkok’s hottest fitness studios. But the two companies continue to share many big central locations including OMMO Studio. Both passes have a relatively equal number of studios (9-10) along mainline Sukhumvit between Nana and Ekkamai.

Coffee & Breakfast
Comprising Praeng Sappasart, Praeng Nara and Praeng Phuthon, the Old Town’s charming Sam Praeng neighborhood has been a hub of local activity since the reign of King Rama V. Once central to business in Bangkok, the area is now a must-hit spot for street food. By Petpailin Kirdsaeng
This early-rising community is full of breakfast choices, from grab-and-go grilled pork balls with spicy dipping sauce (B8) at Luk Chin Moo Praeng Nara (544 Tanao Rd., 081-483-2347) to crab spring rolls (B40) and khao moo daeng (rice with Chinese red barbecue pork, B40) at 80-yearold Udom Pochana (78 Praeng Phuthon Rd., 02-221-3042). Oldstyle Chigatcha (550 Tanao Rd., 081-559-9608) offers caffeine hits (from B35), while more modern 3rd Cafe (20 Mahannop Rd., 095-563-9942) serves cold white malt coffee (B75).
Lunch & Dinner Although nightlife is scarce, the abundance of street food ensures a vibrant atmosphere. Try Kai Yang Bo Ran’s (474-476 Tanao Rd., 02- 622-2349) renowned grilled chicken (from B110) or Thai Tam Gao Lao Mun Smong
Moo’s (28/1 Praeng Phuthon Rd., 02-221-7612) gao lao (pork brain and entrails soup, B100). The squeamish can opt instead for 50-year-old Kuay Tiew Nuea Gim Tong’s (91 Praeng Phuthon Rd., 02-222-0744) flavorful beef noodles (B50). For traditional Thai-Chinese recipes, try Kuay Jub Matsaya’s (50-52 Praeng Nara Rd., 02-223-6503) kuay jub (rolled rice noodles with crispy deep fried pork, B40-B50). Finish on a sweet note at Kanom Buang Pa Sri (Praeng Nara Rd., 02-222-8500) or cool down with coconut ice cream at Nattaporn Ice Cream (94 Praeng Phuthon, 089-826-5752).
Transport The area is best accessed by bus or the Chao Phraya Express Boat, via Phra Athit, Phra Chan, and Maharaj piers.
San Chao Pho Sua
Accommodation Cozy Sino-Portuguese-style shophouses dominate the area, some of which have been renovated as contemporary hostels (from B700/night). Condo and apartment rentals are rare, but include the 48-unit Thai-style Boonsiri Place Service Apartment (55 Soi Boonsiri, Buranasart Rd., 026222-189. From B7,000/month) and the simple, super-affordable Hor Pak Eakkorn (109 Tanao Rd., 095-487-3456. B2,900/month). Two kilometers away, Ratdamnoen Condominium (111/3-179 Klong Thom Wat Sommanat Rd., 02-282-9074) offers 175 units from B10,000/month (46-sq-meters). The luxurious 36-floor Bangkok River Park (432 Soi Saphan Yao, Songwad Rd., 02221-2338, B26,000,000/for sale) has a fitness room, swimming pool, sauna and basketball court.
Community Food is at the heart of this peaceful old-style community, with Trok Mor Morning Market (Soi Tesa, Ratchabophit Rd.) providing fresh ingredients as well as clothes, accessories, and home products. Just under a kilometer away, Saranrom Park (Charoenkrung Rd.) is a popular place to exercise.
Visit On Nov 24-25, annual art event Sam Praeng Facestreet will fill the area with local workshops, music, shows and food stalls. Yearround, the Taoist Tiger God Shrine, San Chao Pho Sua (Tanao Rd.), offers blessings of good fortune, while just over a kilometer away, Rommaninat Park (between Siriphong and Maha Chai Rd.) takes over the former grounds of the central prison and now houses the Bangkok Corrections Museum.

THITIPORN TECHAKUPSINEE, OWNER OF LUK CHIN MOO PRAENG NARA “Sam Praeng is a good alternative to busy Yaowarat for affordable, traditional and homemade food. Many visitors are attracted to the area’s peacefulness and there have been new hostels popping up recently”
WAREE RUNGROJSUWAN, OWNER OF UDOM POCHANA “Sam Praeng is a quiet and friendly community. Now, we have some local and foreign travelers—it’s not as crowded as Khaosan, but it’s more interesting. Most of the stores here have a very long history, offering homemade dishes.”
NATTAPORN RUNGROJSUWAN, OWNER OF NATTAPORN ICE CREAM “People in Sam Praeng live together as a family—our old-style community is different from living in new suburbs where people don’t even talk to their neighbors. Each of the little sub-sois hide rare gems and many delicious food stores to explore.”
