ADVERTORIAL
This Sukhumvit social house has something for everyone Octo Seafood Bar puts attention on what matters: good experiences, people and food Bangkok’s F&B scene has never been more competitive than it is now. As one of the most visited and cosmopolitan cities in the world, the scene here is always changing and open to new concepts. The scene is vibrant and energetic, showcasing the best culinary and drink cultures from across Thailand and the world. Octo Seafood Bar, Sukhumvit’s latest social house, is built around the ideals of Bangkok’s food scene. Just like the city is a melting pot of opportunities and people, Octo is an awesome restaurant, bar and club all rolled into one. Designed by renowned Thai architect Tanakorn Kaocharoenpong, whose previous work includes Demo Nightclub in Thonglor, Happy Fish and Kodang Talay at Asiatique, the 2,000-square-meter space features a massive octopus sculpture in its foyer and a 4x12-meter “Iron Bar” in the middle of the hall. Here, they serve an international selection of cocktails and beverages from around the world. While these two elements make up the most visually impactful parts of the space, they are also are the centerpieces to which all the venue’s other elements are anchored. On the right of the Iron Bar is the “Salumeria Zone”
where you can find all manner of European cold cuts, pizzas, soups, sandwiches and cheese in a grab-and-go setting. On the left side of the bar is the “Ceviche Bar Zone” offering South American dishes that highlight Octo’s world-class seafood, all of which go great with tequila, pickled vegetables and spicy salads. Next is the “Sushi Zone” (AKA “Cutts”), which highlights some of the best sushi and sashimi money can buy. Those in the drinking mood will love Dr. Fetch, a chic bar/club that hosts live DJs and musicians—on top of a killer mixology team whipping up some of the best cocktails in town. But there is more. Octo also includes its own built-in speakeasy bar intentionally hidden from view to encourage customers to adventure around the space looking for it. Recently, the brand also collaborated with high-end wine shop ‘The Godfather’ to open a sophisticated rooftop wine corner. No matter what you are looking for in Bangkok’s cosmopolitan food scene, you can find it at Octo Seafood Bar. It’s an unforgettable place, built for unforgettable experiences.

HOT OR NOT
This pair are challenging Thailand’s beauty standards through social media
In the past few months we’ve seen Took Lae Dee, Baan Ying and, now, Go-Ang Pratunam Khao Man Gai open branches in Singapore. What did we ever get in return? The decidedly two-star offerings of Hawker Chan spring sadly to mind. Now before you go see how Thai chicken rice fares in the land of chicken rice, be sure to book first-class with Thai Airways for a sky-high entree whipped up by Jay Fai.
INTERVIEW
Despite other countries blazing the trail with body positivity campaigns and “plus” size models, the concept of body diversity barely even registers in Thai society. Benyapat “Worwear” Kruenakphan, 35 and Panita “Pani” Hummel Roth, 29 are two Thai female activists who are challenging Thai perceptions of health and beauty.
“We want to showcase how how diverse beauty can be and that big doesn’t always mean you’re unfit or unhealthy.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
Upfront_BK 749_Oct 26_18_new.indd 4
Tell us about yourselves and your project. Worwear: I work as a personal assistant for a Thai supermodel and I’m a big girl myself. Lots of girls were messaging me on Instagram for tips on how to dress and look after themselves—basically how to be fabulous and curvy—and I realized we’re lacking information on this topic here. Also, people would tell me I’d never be successful because of my size, so I wanted to show that curvy women are just as capable as everyone else. I started the Facebook page Oversized [www.fb.com/ oversizedoverzaab] last December—at first I just did some photoshoots posted with fun and witty quotes that promote body diversity. It gained a lot of followers, so then we started doing workshops to teach people about their health and mindset. Pani: I’m a radio station DJ at Met107 every MonFri from 1-4pm. Worwear and I met at Cindy Sirinya Bishop’s Don’t Tell Me How To Dress project and we clicked. The second workshop we did was a yacht party, where we invited models to talk about their struggles with the Thai media industry’s beauty standards—not only in terms of size but other issues like skin tone as well. We want to be clear about our message: we are not promoting being overweight—we care about health, too. It’s about being comfortable with yourself. And your other project? Pani: The Curve Battle Thailand is a YouTube show that will air on Nov 5, where 15 women and some trans women will participate in different classes and workshops to find a winner. We came up with it when the Wild Boar football team were stuck in the cave; people were posting nasty memes of plus-size models with comments like, “We found the wild boars!” Someone commented “If
I were stuck with those women, I would rather die.” We want to change perceptions of “beauty” in Thailand; right now, it’s very specific—you have to be very skinny with big boobs and white skin. Why can’t curvy women be sexy? We want to showcase how diverse beauty can be and that big doesn’t always mean you’re unfit or unhealthy— one of our episodes is about working out. We want to create a space for curvy girls to show their abilities, feel confident and to celebrate each other’s success rather than putting themselves down. Worwear: People ask if we are looking for someone beautiful. No, we are looking for someone smart who can take Thailand’s perceptions of body diversity to another level and inspire others. Do you think Thai media is representative of body diversity? Pani: No, it’s not and it’s very damaging. Magazines and TV soaps create an unrealistic image for the younger generation, which causes them to lack confidence and self-worth. Do you think there’s a market for pluz-size models in Thailand? Pani: There’s a huge market waiting. We have some plus-size clothes in Thailand but none are very fashionable—they just act to cover your body up. Where do you girls shop for clothes? Worwear: H&M, Zara, Uniqlo—we need sexier options though. Pani: H&M, although the pants would fit me but they would be loose around my waist, so I’d take them to the seamstress to adjust. Some brands are starting to offer bigger sizes but it’s still not enough. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

TOUR OPERATORS Is the tide turning for Thailand’s island conservation efforts? No sooner did the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation close Maya Bay (aka Leo DiCaprio Beach) to tourists for an indefinite time, they went ahead and capped the number of visitors to the Similan-Surin islands to just 3,850 a day. The tour operators may disagree, but no doubt our overrun beaches deserve a well-earned rest.
BODY DIVERSITY Last month’s British Cosmopolitan magazine with Tess Holliday on the cover showed just how far we have to go, with the managing editor of a certain Thai fashion magazine labeling the plus-size model na kliad—ugly, disgusting, hideous—in a now-deleted Facebook post. Then there’s hit YouTube show This Is Me Vatanika’s decidedly hi-so, light-skinned depiction of “real people.” Thankfully, some people have had it—see left for some no-judgement body celebration.
SOCIAL MEDIA Please make welcome generalissimo 4.0! Don’t call it campaigning, but Prayuth is now a full-fledged Facebook, Twitter and Instagram devotee. There’s just one thing Mr.“Real-Happiness-is-Away-fromSocial-Media” didn’t contend with: those pesky trolls. They’re everywhere, forcing loudmouth editors to eat their words (see left), calling out new army chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong’s refusal to rule out another coup, and generally just holding others accountable. Boo!

The Hummus Diaries Join us on a Middle Eastern taste trek around Bangkok. By Kankanok Wichiantanon
Arabesque
L
ocally known as Soi Arab, Sukhumvit Soi 3/1 is an eclectic Middle Eastern hub bustling with energy. Strolling down the chaotic yet charming alleyway, you’ll be bombarded with alluring scents of freshly baked naan, spice-seasoned grilled meat and sweet shisha, spanning the manifold cuisines of the Arab diaspora. Although this part of the city is commonly associated with its red light underbelly, there’s so much more to it if you take the time to explore. In times gone by, it was filled with shops specializing in oud (an Arabic incense made from agarwood), with a few restaurants dotted here and there, but as the number of Middle Eastern tourists increased, many visitors started taking up roots. “I first visited here 12 years ago and fell in love with the place, so I came back, looked for jobs and bought into the restaurant business,” says Hossam Kedis, owner of Egyptian restaurant Arabesque. Others came here to flee from hardships in their home countries, as this Yemeni waiter (who didn’t wish to be identified) explains: “I left my city as the war felt like it had no foreseeable ending. My whole family is still there—they didn’t want to flee from the land they grew up in—and it was hard for me to leave them behind.” Although the demographics are constantly shifting, Bangkok remains home to a strong and diverse presence of Middle Eastern communities. “I moved here eight years back, after I married my wife. The Turkish community was a lot bigger then but there are still maybe 400-500 of us here, mostly working in the jewelry business,” says Hanbey Metin, owner of Saman Turkish Restaurant. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand Middle East, over 616,000 people from the region visited Thailand last year, only serving to strengthen the already well-established Middle Eastern identities and cultures in Bangkok. But it’s not only visitors that are drawn to this area’s gastronomy—the informal, communal dining culture coupled with simply prepared, scrumptious dishes has placed Middle Eastern restaurants firmly on the foodie map. So switch into feast mode and get down to Nana to check out these top spots.
THE BEST STREETS IN BANGKOK FOR MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD ADVENTURES

Persian House
PERSIAN HOUSE
Iranian
Shahrazad
Once the center of the Persian Empire and the ancient Silk Road, Iran has a complex food identity that draws heavily on native ingredients like nuts, saffron, lemon and pomegranate, with a focus on slow cooked stews, rice and kebabs.
AL-IRAQI At this restaurant which doubles as a guest house, you can enjoy the best of Iranian and Iraqi food together. Kebabs and barbecued meats are the stars of the show, including fish, lamb, chicken, ribs and prawns—try the Iraqi kebab (B160) or kebab with rice (B200). 8/17-18 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-655-5357, 02-251-8810. Open daily 9-3:30am.
MOHSEN RESTAURANT This restaurant offers a cheaper introduction to Persian food in a clean, well-organized setting, far from Soi Nana. Mohsen makes superb hummus (B120) and Bakhtiyari kebabs (B220), showcasing excellently grilled meat that’s tender and never dry. 6 Soi Prachum, Silom Rd., 02-235-3970. Open daily 10am-9pm.
Formerly Taste of Persia, this restaurant on leafy Pan Road continues the legacy with a new, rich turquoise look, intimate interior and golden sculptures. Get the aghali polo (B120), a traditional Iranian rice dish that combines the delicate flavors of broad bean and dill, or the khoresht goosht (B470), a lamb stew with fall-off-the-bone meat. 48/2-3 Pan Rd., 02-635-2674. Open daily 11am-10pm.
SHAHRAZAD Claiming to be the oldest on a soi made up enBK Pick! tirely of Middle Eastern restaurants, Shahrazad still stands out. Chicken is the only doner kebab option, but it is truly succulent, while the mezzes are also excellent (B300). Don’t leave without ordering the grilled leg of lamb (B300). 6/8 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-251-3666. Open daily 9am-3am.
SHATER Tucked behind a little coffee joint in chaotic Nana, this reliable late-night Persian eatery has stood its ground for 18 years. The tender and flavorful braised lamb shank (B400) comes in a tasty, thick and aromatic sauce that exudes turmeric and saffron— but the lusciously thick tahina (B120) is what’s really got us hooked. 75 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-655-6460. Open Mon-Sat 8-4am; Sun 8am-midnight.
Sukhumvit Soi 3/1
Silom Road
Sukhumvit Soi 23, 24 and 39
This street and its rabbit warren of side-alleys—colloquially known as “Soi Arab”—are the stuff of Middle Eastern food dreams: from Lebanese to Egyptian to Iranian. Chaotic, noisy, full of touts, but not without a certain grungy charm, this area doesn’t feel much like Bangkok at all.
BTS Sala Daeng is the jumping off point for a wealth of Middle Eastern eateries. Beirut flies the flag for Lebanese food near the red-light district, but Upper Silom is where the real gems are. Silom Soi 23’s dense population of Turks are ably serviced by Saman and Ottoman, while you’ll also find the newly-relocated Nadimos and Persian House in the vicinity.
The residential back streets of Sukhumvit host well-known Lebanese restaurants like Nadimos (Sukhumvit Soi 24) and Beirut (Sukhumvit Soi 39). Lesser known, but just as worth your while, is teeny-tiny Rawabina (Sukhumvit Soi 23), notable for its juicy kebab rotisserie out front.

Lebanese
WHERE TO SAMPLE THESE RARELY-FOUND CUISINES
This cuisine was heavily influenced by the Ottoman Empire, with Mediterranean-leaning staples including seafood, lamb, parsley, grains, olive oil, chickpeas and mild, aromatic spices.
BAMBOO For those of you that hold kebabs and shisha in equal regard, head to Bamboo. The restaurant’s interior may be neither neither dramatic nor sleek, yet its dark mood and tone make for an intimate space that really draws you in. What’s more is that they serve juicy grilled kebabs, tender shawarma and soft, airy naan bread baked fresh in a wood-fired oven. Shisha comes in a fruit bowl of flavors, from lemon and pineapple to berry—but for a super-smooth smoke, we recommend the apple. Sukhumvit Soi 3 (opposite Grace Hotel), 02-655-5531. Open 24 hours.
BEIRUT It has been our Lebanese mainstay for years, and is one of the few solid options outside of Nana for affordable and authentic Lebanese-style doner kebabs (beef or chicken, B180), served with hummus. Despite the large menu selection, the food here is comforting and consistent. B/F, Ploenchit Center, Sukhumvit Soi 2, 02-656-7377. Open daily 10am-10pm. G/F, 64 Silom Building, Silom Rd., 02-632-7448. Open daily 11:30am-midnight. Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-5574. Open daily 11.00am - 11.00pm
AL FERDOSS Nestled in the heart of the Arab quarter, this spot is as old-school as they come. The slightly battered menu offers wonderfully creamy, zesty hummus (B80) which you can mop up with crisp yet airy Lebanese bread (B10) the size of a small bicycle wheel. The barbeque dishes are herby, moist and flavorful. 1/F, Schiller’s Inn, 77/1-3 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-255-8200/-3. Open daily 9am-midnight.
NADIMOS These Lebanese expats are committed to serving BK Pick! authentic dishes, like the kebab khashkhash (B210) which combines tender skewers of charcoal-grilled lamb with a wonderfully tasty tomato sauce. Head there for their Super Sunday BBQ buffet (B555, 12pm-3pm), when it’s also 50-percent off beers. 99 Sukhumvit Soi 24, 02-261-9816. Open daily 11:30am-11:30pm. Holiday Inn, Silom Rd., 02-266-9081. Open daily 11:30am11:30pm.
PETRA The little eatery comes complete with a clay oven for baking naan and a menu that spans Lebanese, Arab and Yemeni dishes. The chicken curry (B150) is especially good while the lamb kebab (B130), barbecued lamb and lamb ribs (B150) are also popular. 75/4 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-655-5230, 02-254-9226/-7. Open daily 9am-3am.
RAWABINA
Budget
Word has it that the chef here used to work at NadPick! imos before opening this little joint—two street-side tables under a red awning, and just a few indoor seats. Their shawarma wrap (B80) comes loaded with seasoned chicken, cabbage, onions and garlic cream in a warm pita. Sukhumvit Soi 23, 092-820-2828. Open 11:30am-midnight.
AL RAWCHE This low-cost, no-frills spot puts food first with its mouth-watering meats and safiha (Lebanon’s answer to pizza, B170). Don’t miss the tender and juicy grilled chicken tawook. 95 Sukhumvit Soi 5, 02-655-0099. Open daily 11-2am.

Al Firdous
YEMENI
Part Mediterranean, part Persian and part Balkan, Turkish cuisine reflects its country’s unique position, a bridge between Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Al Firdous The famed purveyor of the world’s biggest naan also serves an array of dishes in which to dunk it, all in large portions at reasonable prices. 3/1 Sukhumvit Rd. Open daily 11am-2am.
BOSPHORUS Hidden towards the back of the nondescript Grand 5 Hotel, this Turkish jewel offers some next level kebabs (mixed B200 or beef doner B180)—juicy and nicely seasoned—atop perfect pillowy rice. 2/F, Grand 5 Hotel, 87 Sukhumvit Soi 3, 02-253-6466. Open daily 1pm-2am.
Hadramaut Al Yemen Halal Restaurant
It may not look like much decor-wise, but the kitchen serves up one mean mandi rice with mutton. 75/3 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-252-7960. Open daily 9-3am.
KEBABRY This place serves German-Turkish-style doner kebabs in Thonglor’s shisha-friendly Opus Building. Go for the bestselling Berliner (chicken, bell peppers, mint sauce, yogurt, garlic and feta cheese, B99) along with ayran (B55), a Turkish yogurt drink that comes in strawberry, mango or mixed berry. 1/F, Opus, 1139 Thonglor Soi 10, 02-714-9702. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-10pm.
OTTOMAN TURKISH RESTAURANT Taking particular pride in its traditional shish-kebabs (B230), this place also serves the Turkish-style flatbread pizza, pide—try the kiymali pide topped with ground beef (B180). Finish off with some sweet, flaky baklava (B80) and a Turkish coffee (B40). Baan Silom, 653 Silom Soi 19, 02-635-3688. Open daily 9am-midnight.
SAMAN
BK Pick!
This spot nails the magic combination of tasty food and pocket-friendly prices. Try the ibo karisik meze (B280), a plate of intriguing appetizers that includes standards like hum- mus and vine leaves alongside lesser known treats like soslu patlican (aubergine in tomato sauce, B120) and ezme (B120), a spicy salad of crushed tomatoes, chili and parsley. Sun Square Silom, 1043/5 Silom Soi 21-23, 02-237-4144. Open daily 11am-10:30pm.
Egyptian
Habesha
ETHIOPIAN Habesha After a couple years downtime, this atmospheric den just reopened in a new spot. The wat (stew) is served on a plate of injera, a fermented bread that can be used to eat the dish. Here’s hoping for the same retro vibes, hookah smoke haze and blaring Ethiopian music. 3/5, Royal Tailer Bldg., Sukhumvit Soi 3, 089988-6208. Open 24 hours (food till 10pm).
Ethiopian Restaurant
This entirely Ethiopian-run operation does exactly what it says on the tin—classic Ethiopian dishes, like the popular doro wat platter that comes with stew, vegetables and flatbread. Eclectic crowds converse in multiple languages before moving on to next door’s rowdy African pub. Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Nana), 084-930-3250. Open daily 11am-10pm.
Egyptian cuisine shares a lot with the Eastern Mediterranean region—it doesn’t rely on heavily on spices, and instead spotlights legumes and vegetables.
ARABESQUE BK Pick! Dimly lit and covered in arabesque patterns, this spot serves everything from tagines and Egyptian barbecue fish (B400) to classic fattah mozzah (B280)—layers of crunchy bread and rice topped with tender cubes of lamb and a well-balanced vinegar and garlic sauce. 68/1 Sukhumvit Soi 2, 02-656-9440. Open daily 11am-11pm.
NEFERTITI
Al Rawche Nefertiti
This 24-hour restaurant serves some excellent dips and salads—but most come to smoke shisha to their heart’s content. 4/8 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-655-3043. Open 24 hours.
A Taste of Africa
PAN-AFRICAN Faria
Surrounded by Middle Eastern restaurants, this spot serves Thai by day and pan-African dishes by night. Go for the sosatie (grilled lamb), or the Ghanaian fufu (dough-like ball) served with a peanut and fish stew, plus a meat of your choice. Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Nana), 02-253-4741. Open daily 12pm-midnight.
A Taste of Africa
The restaurant focuses on the food of Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. Both the Nigerian egussi (thick chicken stew with ground seeds) and the Ethiopian doro wat (chicken stew) come with plantain and sides of rice or bread. 20, Charoen krung Soi 46, 083-438-5075. Open daily 6pm-midnight.

Can’t get enough of that spicy stir-fried pork and basil topped with a decadent sunny side egg? You’re not the only one, so head to the tiny Kaprao 168 (www.fb.com/Kaprao168) next to Chiang Mai University, which is dedicated entirely to the Thai staple. It doesn’t stop at classic pork either, as they’ve got braised beef (B55), crispy deep-fried squid (B55), sweet Chinese sausage (B40) and even pork intestine (B65). The alfresco dining space may be simple and pared down, but dangling pot plants and big crowds ensure that it maintains a cozy feel.
Vietnam’s first Sheraton takes over a long stretch of pristine Non Nuoc Beach, just 20 minutes’ drive from downtown Da Nang and UNESCO site Hoi An, and 10 minutes’ walk from the tourist attraction of Marble Mountains. The 258 rooms and suites of Sheraton Grand Danang Resort (www.marriott.com) face the vast peninsula of Son Tra, evoking a warm yet airy feel with creamy shades and floor-to-ceiling windows (from B7,649/night), all cut down the middle by an ultra-long pool. Onsite there’s a poolside bar, beach club and mellow jazz lounge as well as a spa offering ancient Asian treatments. VietJet (vietjetair. com) just launched daily direct Bangkok-Da Nang flights (from B5,782 return).

Besides serving Western-inspired dishes, like the Zucchini Fritters topped with creme fraiche, mango salsa, and house smoked salmon (B135), and the waffles topped with caramelized banana, fresh fruit and a big scoop of ice-cream (B149), Thai traditional food is also on the list, from khao soi (B95) to Northern style curry (B95). If you fancy a drink that doubles as a dessert, try the “Earthquake” (B95), which sees mint flavored milk blended with chocolate and topped with a scoop of mint-chocolate chip ice-cream.

04 Sra Bua gearing up for cooler days with new Scandi-inflected menu
100 Mahaseth (100 Mahaset Rd., 02-235-0023) is turning one this Nov 11 and to celebrate partners Chalee Kader (Surface, Holy Moly) and Randy Noprapa (Fillets) are throwing a big birthday bash. From pouring your own free-flow beers to experiencing their Isaan nose-to-tail dining in all its glory, head there from 3-9pm to sample whole pig’s head, grilled beef, fermented pork ribs, cured pork jowl and a live pho station. And it’s only B700 per person. Contact 02-235-0023 or Instagram @100mahaseth for tickets.
If you feel a sinking sense of guilt every time you throw a plastic bottle in the trash, then here’s some good news: Avitez has introduced water in natural organic bottles made from plants, which take just 180 days to decompose, compared to the usual 450 years for standard plastic bottles. The water itself also comes from a natural local source in the Khao Yai mountains. So far, hotels like Centara and restaurants like La Bottega have jumped on board. Until they hit supermarket shelves, you can order them online at www.avitez.co.th/orders for B30 a bottle.
Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin (Lobby/F, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, 991/9 Rama 1 Rd. 02-162-9000) continues its pioneering work on the Thai fine-dining scene with its latest menu, “The Winter Journey.” The eight-course show-stopper menu (B3,200) features Scandi winter flavors warmed up with Thai inflections in dishes like the beef ceviche, which sees thinly sliced A5 wagyu topped with avocado puree, cucumber jelly and a spicy marinade. We’ll leave the desserts a surprise, but it’s safe to say they’ll make you feel like a kid again.
¡VIVA MEXICO! Sathorn’s Latino party spot Revolucion Bar will be welcoming Mexican restaurant La Lupita upstairs in November. Mexican chef Sergio Velazquez will be whipping up homemade tortillas, ceviche, tacos and guacamole alongside Latino-inspired dishes like arepas and empanadas, followed by a line of mezcals and tequilas.

HOW THESE AIRPLANES MAKE NOK AIR ONE OF THE MOST LOVABLE THAI AIRLINES.
Nok Tubtim Siam
“NOKAIR, WE FLY SMILES”
ADVERTORIAL
Nok Bussarak am
While waiting for your flight to depart, you might notice that some aircraft in Bangkok are a little bit more creative than their boring, corporate-colored counterparts. With vibrant hues and playful designs, it’s no surprise that you can easily spot the majestic airplanes owned by Nok Air—rated Thailand’s best low-cost airline in 2018 from Skytrax. CNN Travel recently ranked Nok Air’s exterior design as among the 18 coolest in the world. Like its namesake nok (the Thai word for birds), these Boeing 737-800 sport a cheerful-looking bird with a smile on its beak and small eyes around the cockpit area—a nod to its playful and approachable brand character. Color-wise, the company intends to blend the beauty of Thai gemstones into its upcoming designs, like Nok Tubtim Siam—named after the Siam ruby—and Nok Bussarakam, which signifies the color of a yellow sapphire to celebrate Nok Air’s 10th anniversary of its current color scheme. These are only small examples of notable aircraft from Nok Air, so when you book your next flight with the airline be sure to spot one and take a photo.

Italian restaurant Carbar is cheat day done right The buzz: 72 Courtyard’s Hopeland has been transformed into a very casual wine bar that serves up carb-loaded dishes.
carbs, you can opt for the hanger steak (B340)—you’ll just have to be disciplined enough to hold off on the side of barbecue fries.
The decor: A wall has been knocked through to create an open space that’s connected to 72 Courtyard’s alfresco seating zone, while the kitchen is separated from the dining area by a large glass window, so you can watch the staff hard at work from the comfort of one of the family-sized wooden tables. A mix of wood, concrete, neon signage and hanging bulbs makes for a rustic-industrial feel, all framed on one side by a wellstocked bar.
The drinks: A long list of wine with offerings rarely found in Bangkok, ranging from B260320 per glass. For white, we recommend the 2016 Babich Sauvignon Blanc (B320) from Marlborough, New Zealand, and, for red, the 2015 Ave de Presa Elegance Tempranillo from Castilla-La Mancha, Spain (B260)—a perfect match for the hanger steak. The signature Strawberry Frose (B250) cocktail tastes more like a smoothie, combining prosecco and strawberry puree with an oregano garnish.
The food: As the name suggests, this place is all about carbs—sorry, diet. We loved the arancini (B150) so much that we had to order seconds, stuffed full of camembert, Parmigiano-Reggiano and sun-dried tomatoes, with apricot jam for dipping. Go hard or go home with the ultra-cheesy parmesan-soaked spaghetti cacio e pepe (B220), or for something a little spicy, try the linguine vongole with clams and chili flakes (B250). Pizzas come in four toppings like Prosciutto di parma or Italian sausage, with prices ranging from B220-390. If you’re really serious about cutting down on

Atomic Beer Pong (The Opus Building, 139 Thonglor Soi 10, 082-5025848) is taking the classic drinking pastime to the next level. For the uninitiated, they sum up the game as “miniature tabletop basketball with booze,” yet here it goes far beyond the traditional red cup, beer and ping pong ball set up. The hightech, custom-built tables light up via sensors when a ball is dunked, while hygiene-freaks will be pleased to hear there’s no bouncing of ping pong balls from the floor to your beer—instead, the cups are filled with water and penalty beer is dispensed from a germ-free tap. Games start at B740/2 jugs.
Easily spotted by the huge 3D Maneki Neko cat frontage, Yuzu Ramen (Siam Square Soi 3, 02-086-5659) offers Siam Square’s latest take on Japanese fare. Here, both dishes and drinks are given a refreshing zesty kick with the addition of yuzu (a type of Japanese citrus fruit), like in the signature Spicy Yuzu Tonkatsu Ramen (B320) and the Yuzu Honey Soda (B135). Inside, cosy individual wooden booth seating can be opened up for more social meals via folding divides to a soundtrack of Japanese rap.
Taan (25/F, Siam @ Siam Design Hotel, 865 Rama 1 Rd., 065-3287374) bills itself as “hyper-local” in reference to the seasonal ingredients it sources from independent farmers around the country. Executive chef Monthep Kamolsilp, 29, puts firm, juicy brackish prawns from Ranong to use in his twist on choo chee curry (B390) with basil-wrapped grilled eggplant. His pad kaprao (B410), made with organic pork from Nan, as well as long beans, torch-ginger and southern budu fish sauce, is a light and delicious, if potentially sacreligious, take on a classic. Try a nine-course dinner set for B1,800/ person. Cocktails (from B330) play to the same Thai-Thai script, and the 25th-floor views are spectacular.

Who makes 7-Eleven’s best... coconut water? Potassium-rich, super-hydrating, nutty, fresh and naturally sweet, coconut water has long been lauded as “Mother Nature’s sports drink,” leading beverage manufacturers to bottle it up and stack it onto supermarket shelves. But can they really deliver the miraculous taste you get fresh from the source, or should we just stick to the roadside options, faithfully decanted into plastic bags? We blind tested some of Thailand’s top grab-and-go 7-Eleven and supermarket brands—here’s what we think. By BK Staff

Coco Max
Sweetness: Natural taste: Just from smelling it, this contender offers no hint of coconut at all. It doesn’t get any better with the taste either—a sweet liquid that almost just tastes like sugar water. Does this even contain any real coconut water? Verdict: Coconut-free. Price: B35 www.fb.com/ICoconut
Sweetness: Natural taste: This is, by far, the sweetest out of the lot, with the most artificial coconut taste and scent—it reminds us of the coconut-flavored jelly we ate growing up. Verdict: Coconut jelly in a bottle. Price: B25 www.focolifeplus.com
Sweetness: Natural taste: This one tastes very close to real coconut water—it’s quite sweet, but with a mildly sour aftertaste. The coconut scent, however, isn’t so strong (a bit artificial even), but that’s not such a bad thing as it’s still super refreshing. Verdict: Down-able. Price: B25 www.cocomax.com
Malee Coco
Sweetness: Natural taste: A soft, aromatic smell of coconut radiates from the bottle, revealing a taste that’s a little sweet yet leaves a hint of sourness in the mouth. This is by far the freshest and most natural of them all. Verdict: Almost the real thing. Price: B25 www.malee.co.th
Taste test_ BK 749_Oct 26_18.indd 19
UFC Refresh Sweetness: Natural taste: Sitting on the milder side, this lightly sweet and clean tasting contender doesn’t have much of a coconut scent, but instead it does come with a turbid white color and a strong packaging smell. Verdict: Mildly funky. Price: B29 www.ufcrefreshcoco.com

Sweetness: Natural taste: There’s zero trace of fresh coconut in this bottle, but instead a strong husky smell of smoked coconut—almost like you’re drinking a lit candle. Its slightly yellowish color and high levels of sweetness did not impress. Verdict: Smoky gone wrong. Price: B25 www.iffamily.com
Runner Up! Yuck!
Koko Magic Sweetness: Natural taste: This mild tasting coconut water is subtly sweet with a faintly tangy aftertaste—add in its slightly milky color and it could almost be the real thing cracked open fresh from the tree. Verdict: So fresh and so clean. Price: B49 www.kokomagic.com

Eat Me
Eat Me HHHHH
International. 1/6 Soi Phiphat 2, Convent Rd., 02238-0931. Open daily 3pm-1am. BTS Sala Daeng BBB-BBBB F H
Open since 1998, Eat Me is one of Bangkok’s enduring success stories. The two-story restaurant is a cool, yet cozy, melange of modernist and natural—part gallery, part sleek day spa offering refuge from the disorder of Silom. For the best part of a decade the kitchen’s been helmed by American chef Tim Butler, whose creative, flavor-packed dishes across a wide price range have made Eat Me a fixture on regional restaurant lists, seducing diners and reducing critics to incoherent wrecks. Descriptors like “bold,” “fresh” and “East-meets-West” often ring hollow, but here they’re on-point. Butler and co. pull off Thai-but-not-Thai combinations like a black chicken salad (B390) that’s elevated to new heights by the addition of red papaya, toasted coconut and betel leaf. A starter of mixed clams in a lime broth (B750) is another celebration of excellent (and sustainable) produce which also benefits from the genius addition of sour-salty naem sausage. Our first sweet and creamy mouthful of the oxtail and roasted bone marrow done up in a red curry flavor (kaffir lime, basil, coriander, B1,050) had

In t he sp a ce t hat wa s o n ce th e m i llion-baht-membership-touting Ku De Ta, the California-born Koi brand of fusion Japanese restaurants and clubs has come roaring back onto the Bangkok dining scene. Even the chef has returned, the Kobe-hailing Hisashi Iwata, who oversaw the kitchen’s fusion sushi rolls and steaks in its previous triangular glasshouse incarnation on Sukhumvit. The dining room is modish and obviously expensive. There are sweeping banquettes in brown leather (or something that looks like leather), impressive views of Sathorn and an open kitchen staffed by a small army. Sharing plates run from B450 (nigiri-look-alike balls of crispy rice topped with minced tuna or salmon) to B1,900 (a Japanese wagyu rib-eye steak served on sizzling ceramic plate). More down-the-line authentic sushi and sashimi is priced from B200-1,400. As for drinks, a glass of the entry-level Black Nikka will cost B240, while the Yamazaki 18 Years is B5,600. Yikes. From the cocktail menu, we tried their Japanese-whiskey take on a Manhattan (the “Tokyo-hattan,” B380) and it was decent.
us ready to proclaim a bold new direction for Thai food. Even the seemingly straightforward pappardelle with spicy rabbit ragu, black olive and nduja pork (B580) rewards with peppery, pad kee mao-esque undertones. Eat Me is just as highly regarded as a bar, its fern-enshrouded outdoor zone made for after-work drinks. In mixologist Buntanes “Pop” Direkrittikul, Butler has a worthy accomplice. Pop’s gastronomy-inspired creations contribute to the sense that Eat Me is never standing still. The vodka-based Laab-Moo (inspired by the spicy, herbal pork dish from Isaan, B390) comes topped with a crispy strip of Serrano ham, its rim flecked with with a crunchy mix of cilantro, rice and mint flakes. Gimmicky? Sure, but delicious. Not everything will blow your mind, however. The heirloom carrot confit (B390) with warm goat cheese, pine nut and balsamic vinegar is only the sum of its parts and, dare we say it, even a little bland. The dishes labeled “spicy” also tend to err on the side of caution. In the boisterous dining room, rammed tight with tables, you’re as likely to rub shoulders with glamorous local socialites as you are with tank-topped Asian tourists. That doesn’t always make for the most intimate of meals, but you still feel at the center of something important. After all this time, Eat Me serves up a slick package that’s conducive to good times, with diligent, five-star service to boot.
The same can’t be said of all Koi’s food. The “Koi Crispy Rice” with spicy salmon (B450) is very buttery, rather sweet and not very satisfying: four mushy cubes of rice paste topped with bland minced salmon that had us wishing we’d opted for the rolls instead. A shiso-leaf tabbouleh (traditionally a Middle Eastern salad of diced parsley) tastes neither of shiso nor tabbouleh. In fact it doesn’t really taste of anything and costs B300, which makes it the most expensive side salad we’ve ordered this year. Far more promising is a sizzling plate of Australian fillet beef whose meat is juicy, red, tender and plentiful. We do not begrudge the B1,300 price, though take issue with a lack of seasoning. We asked for salt and got given the communal table variety. This beef deserves better. We do however like the mash—sticky, moreish and with enough truffle to bash its way through every mouthful. We just wish we’d got to enjoy it in a space with more life. Sure, we visited Koi on a Sunday and this is really a pre-party Friday-Saturday kind of place, but our arrival was greeted by a spookily empty lobby and the faint, funky smell of a nightclub. Service is charming but not efficient, and as we sat waiting for our food, we couldn’t help thinking Koi is not up to Bangkok’s current pace. If we were being kind, we’d say it needs refining. If we were being honest, we’d say it feels like a blast from the past.

Faux Fitness
Don’t be fooled by these four common fitness myths. By Jack Thomas*
T
23
Three spa treatments to make you feel like a new man It’s 2018, and spa sessions are no longer reserved solely for health-conscious ladies. If you’re the kind of guy who’s not afraid of a little pampering, check out these treatments.
hese days, everyone seems to be a fitness and nutrition expert—your boss, the in-laws, your taxi driver—they all “read an article” or more likely “saw an Instagram post” about what to eat or how to train. News flash! Not everything you read on the Internet is true, so—well-intentioned as their advice might be—you should always err on the side of caution. Here, we sift out the fake news with these fitness myth busters.
Lifting weights makes you bulky
Cardio is the best way to lose weight
Many women are concerned that if they pick up a dumbbell they’ll wake up the next morning looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in drag. In reality it’s much harder to gain muscle than you might think, especially for women due to their lower levels of testosterone and other muscle-building hormones. Avoiding weights in this misguided belief is a real tragedy, as there are so many massive health and aesthetic benefits to be had.
Did you sign up for the Bangkok Marathon in a bid to lose weight, only to be left puzzled as to why you’re not seeing results? You may have put it down to one of those “slow metabolisms” you’re always hearing about, but what so many fail to realize is that endless cardio without corresponding diet adjustments is bound to be an uphill struggle. Recent research has shown that many people even put on weight when they exercise, as they justify big eating binges after their session. This overeating “because you’ve earned it” can undo any good work you’ve put in and sometimes even tip the scales the other way.
Solution: Add some strength training to your program and if you really do notice excessive muscle gain that you’re not happy with, dial it back a bit. Or, better still, embrace it.
Solution: Do cardio for fitness, a strong and healthy heart and to aid fat loss, but see diet as the best way to manage unwanted body fat.
You can spot-reduce fat loss with diet or exercise
Squats and deadlifts are bad for your back/knees
Fitness misconceptions and myths are often started by those looking to profit from common insecurities and the desire for a quick-fix solution. You’ve probably seen guides on “how to burn fat on your [insert body part that many people are self-conscious about]” or “one weird food that melts belly fat”. Sadly, whilst you can do exercises to build muscle in a certain area such as your butt or biceps, where you lose body fat once the weight starts coming off is largely down to genetics. It’s common for weight to come off the face first and the hips, butt or belly last. Even more tragically, the one weird food that melts belly fat isn’t Shibuya toast with vanilla ice cream—sob.
In the event of back, knee, shoulder or pretty much any other type of pain, doctors in Bangkok usually err on the side of caution by advising you to do nothing for six to 12 months minimum. This is often coupled with a doctor’s order to avoid squats and deadlifts forever as they are “bad for your knees/back.” Although some more progressive doctors understand the importance of strength training and movement, sadly those patients who are advised not to move or lift are missing out on stronger bones, better posture, a more independent old age; plus, ironically, this lack of exercise usually leads to more pain and injuries down the line.
Solotion: These are the cards you were dealt, so embrace the body you’ve been given and make it as strong and healthy as possible.
Solotion: Do squats, deadlifts and other strength exercises safely, with the guidance of a coach if necessary, for a myriad of health benefits and a great looking body. Navigating the minefield of fitness and healthy eating in a world of fake news can be tricky business. By taking a holistic approach to fitness that encompasses exercise and a good diet, you can avoid the pitfalls and start reaching your goals.

KARMONWAN TONGCHAI, BARISTA AND TRAINER AT STEP WITH THEERA “Ekkamai is full of variety, with people from Europe, Japan and Korea—70 to 80-percent of our customers are foreigners, meaning there are plenty of chances to share something new with one another.”
THANAWIT KITTIKOSIN, CO-OWNER OF EKKAMAI MACCHIATO “Ekkamai is equipped with everything you need, like bars, restaurants, cafes, but it still maintains a peaceful vibe. I recommend One Ounce for Onion for coffee and fashion in one place.”
SIRILUCK LIM, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF OLIVE “We were on Ekkamai when there was absolutely nothing, but nowadays it’s full of cool places. It’s not in the city center but it’s close enough that Bangkokians can come and discover hidden surprises—like Mikkeller with good beer and food.”
