Bangkok Do/See Ratchada Night Market An abandoned open-air space, first occupied by classic car fanatics, has today become one of Bangkok’s most bustling night markets. Treasure hunters come to browse the eclectic selection of used clothes, shoes, cars and motorbikes as well as rummage

One complaint about Bangkok is the lack of green space, but just a half an hour from the city you can find yourself cycling among herds of deer as you suck in some fresh air. Muang Boran, or the Ancient City, is also a great way to visit all of Thailand in one day. This cultural park, about 30 minutes beyond On Nut BTS, features 3/4 size replicas of most of the Kingdom’s historical sites set amid some gorgeous parkland.
In the massive complex of malls surrounding BTS Siam, you’ll find a lot of international brands just like the ones you have at home. But if you want to buy Thai then head to the third floor of Siam Center, where you’ll find local designers like our favorites Greyhound, Senada and Tipayapong. Looking for furniture? Pick up some rough-hewn pieces from architectural wunderkind Duangrit Bunnag’s Anyroom next door, on Siam Discovery’s fourth floor. Done with air con? Hit the streets opposite Siam Paragon. EAT Krua Apsorn Krua Apsorn won’t win any awards for style, but this two shophouse-wide eatery more than makes up for its plain interior with recipes that have been handed down over decades. The stir-fried plump mussels with basil leaves, stir-fried crabmeat with yellow chilies and the spicy

Bo.Lan Run by a former sous-chef from David Thompson’s famous London restaurant Nahm (see next page), Bo-Lan offers traditional Thai food presented in a contemporary style. The elegant dining room, all dark woods, follows a traditional Thai theme with the ceilings covered with kradong (flat baskets). Emphasizing seasonal products, the menu changes regularly, but we (and they) suggest opting for the Bo.lan Balance, a degustation menu featuring a blend of different tastes, washed down with a glass or two of authentic yaa dong (traditional Thai spirit). • 42 Sukhumvit Soi 26, +66(0)-2260 2962/3. This is the second location for what we think is the best Vietnamese food in Bangkok. Chef Me Yung is an expert at sourcing the best ingredients, either from local markets or directly from Vietnam, and cooking them perfectly. Her mastery of textures, colors and flavors make a heady mix that redefines addictive. Many dishes here are unlikely to be found elsewhere in Bangkok including the banh mi thit, or Vietnamese sandwich, and the hu tieu my tho, its southern-style counterpart.
If atmosphere is what you are after, The Deck is a charming riverside restaurant blessed with the backdrop of the Chao Phraya River and the Temple of Dawn. Book a table on the outdoor patio and enjoy stunning views of brightly-lit Wat Arun across the river while the kitchen surprises you with Thai and European specialties.

Foodies are already flocking to sample the fiery, multi-course (we use the word course loosely, as this is true Thai-style dining: communal with the dishes arriving all at once) set menu, which also offers plenty of choices. As the highlight here is the food, the décor is elegant without being cluttered or intimidating. Fake Club You know DJ Station (Silom Soi 2) by heart, so why not go see how real gay Bangkokians like to party? Step inside the posh glowing purple and lusty red decor for a potent dose of international hits and remixes that everyone seems to know the words to. Trust us you’re not going to want to spend any time on Pattaya’s main beach. But never fear, you can still feel the sand beneath your feet with a day escape to one of the nearby islands. Take your pick from the popular and closest Coral Island (Koh Larn), the former royal retreat of Koh Sichang or head a bit further south to the bustling party island of Koh Samed, which is also a popular weekend escape destination for Bangkokians in its own right.
For something a bit more offbeat, try your luck at Naklua Walking Street. Every weekend from 2-10pm, this century-old market becomes a more civilized walking street, offering local merchandise

Moom Aroi
The View
Popular among locals this seafood eatery can be found at the far-end of Naklua road in Northen Pattaya. Set by the sea, Moom Aroi features a simple contemporary decor with a large open-air terrace overlooking the sea. Opt for seaside tables, to enjoy the view (and breeze) as much as their recommended dishes like the deep fried seabass in fish sauce and kaeng som soup with fish eggs.
The View is how Thais like their dining: alfresco, with plenty of heavy wooden tables and armies of waiters mixing their whiskey sodas tableside as they gorge on fresh seafood. And with an extensive menu covering both Central, Thai-Chinese and Northeastern favorites, you’ll need plenty of drinks (they do cocktails, too) to chase the spicy salads, fried whole fishes and rich curries served here.

PLAY Differ
Hard Rock
Now open for nearly six years, Differ Pub has never lost its ability to attract both locals and visitors and the result is it is packed daily. The reason for its success is it brings the hip coolness of bars on Bangkok’s Thong Lor or Ekkamai to the beach. That means sleek design, soft lighting and music from live bands that mix Thai and international favorites. It’s the place to see and to be seen in Pattaya but that does also mean you’ll need to get there early at weekends if you want to get in at all.
In part due to the giant guitar that sits out front, this music-themed hotel and pub has become a well known landmark on Pattaya Beach since it opened 11 years ago. Inside, you can expect the classic music memorabilia, live rock music and hearty pub grub like fish and chips. But this branch of
Hard Rock also has something else to offer the younger generation, namely its infamous foam parties every Saturday night. The music gets house-y, the average age drops and the dance floor gets turned into a churning sea of sexy bubbles for the night. • 429 Moo 9, Pattaya Beach Rd., +66(0)-3842-8755/-9. http:// pattaya.hardrockhotels.com Hard Rock

STAY Centara Mirage We admit to this one being a tad tacky, but it’s also the only highend themed resort in Thailand and a great spot for kids thanks to the impressive selection of water slides and pools, all set in a Lost World-inspired garden. Sheraton Pattaya Resort If downtown Pattaya gets a little bit too much like Sodom and Gomorrah, then this is the perfect bolthole from sin city. Perched on the promontory of Pattaya Hill, this five-star resort tumbles down the hillside to its own (small) manmade beach. We also love the huge baths in the garden suites and the seafood buffets at weekends.

Mrigadayavan Palace
Vic Huahin
Hua Hin has long been known as the royal resort, and perhaps the most striking example of this is the Mrigadayavan Summer Palace. Commissioned by King Rama VI in 1923, the lovingly-restored teakwood structure is in the distinctive Thai-Victorian style of architecture popular during the 1920s. Made up of three main pavilions designed to catch the sea breeze and connected via elevated walkways, the soft pastel colors of the palace and beachfront location make for some great photo opportunities. Tour guides are available upon request. Dress restrictions apply: no shorts, short skirts or sleeveless T-shirts. Entrance fee is B50.
The sister of the famous Patravadi Theater in Bangkok, the Vic Hua Hin combines a theater, gallery, library and a restaurant. They even have a bunch of classes every weekend covering everything from the martial art Wuzu to learning how to play the Thai sabudchai drum. If you’re worried about where to stay while you study, then you can check into their super cute Nai Dee Sculpture Huts which are set in quaint grounds filled with artwork. Rates range from B1,500-B2,500 baht, but you also get free tickets to whatever is currently being performed at the theater if you are staying on a Saturday night.

et’s Sea has always been a trendsetter for what’s hot in Hua Hin—and now it’s inspiring Bangkok. It revived traditional alfresco living with its open-air architecture where the sea takes center stage. It introduced eco-chic with its garden decks and raised wooden platforms where you can chill the Thai way. It took romance and privacy to new heights with its rooftop moon deck suites. As its restaurant turns eight, Let’s Sea also continues to be at the forefront of modern seaside cuisine in Thailand, welcoming both in-house and outside guests. The focus is on the freshest ingredients, global classics and a healthy dose of local herbs and spices with a contemporary presentation. Whether you sample the new menu’s latest additions or indulge in old-time favorites like spaghetti vongole, your alfresco chilling wouldn’t be complete without the perfect bottle of vino. Let’s Sea has over 100 mid-range wines at near-retail prices. Really thirsty? The 9pm-midnight wine buffet can turn any evening into a party. Resolutely Eastern, totally chill and impeccably serviced, Let’s Sea, voted Best Resort in Thailand 2010 by BK Magazine’s readers, continues to set the standards by which others are judged.

it has landed. Across from MBK, right by the Bangkok Art and Culture Center and within a minute’s walk from the Jim Thompson House, Lit is at the cultural and shopping heart of the city. Cross the street in the other direction and you’re in Siam, home to the most exciting shopping centers and the quirkiest boutiques. Lit’s green plaza invites you to take in the city’s energy, while shielding you from its chaos. The architecture firmly represents leading Thai architect firm Vaslab’s trademark deconstructivism: a series of terraces climbing towards the pool, which sits beneath a striking detached façade. Inside, the bold lines turn to curvaceous sensuality, as in the SPA, which offers peaceful, understated luxury with a Thai touch. Awash in modernity, Lit is also at the forefront of design and ergonomics. Rooms feature open plans that place colossal tubs by lush gardens, wrap suites around central rain showers and nestle extra-wide beds beneath intelligent lighting that lets you pick colors to match your mood. With a focus on neighborhood and community, Lit embraces its urbanity and exceptional location, while offering 21st century design features that redefine the hotel experience. Baan Laksasubha With a royal lineage, the owners, who still live in the charming old house at the bottom of the resort, certainly believe that small and simple is beautiful. PLAY Green Mango This is the nightlife headquarters of Chaweng Beach, and while it’s the name of one single bar, when you mention Green Mango, you really cover the strip of bars and clubs that make this the ideal spot for a night of bar hopping. Prepare to get sweaty courtesy of the lack of air con in the bars and the mix of international tunes. A variety of booze buckets make for a messy but fun evening. • Soi Green Mango, Chaweng, Samui, +66(0)-7742-2661.
Beach Republic This bar sits at the northern-end of Lamai Beach on the eastern side of the island. Come and spend the whole day: kick off with brunch and a spa treatment before taking a dip in the pool and then watching the sun set with a drink in hand. Nikki Beach Club At the western end of Lipa Noi Beach, the 12th installment of the hedonistic beach party franchise follows the blue print of the original in Miami. That means a high-flying clientele who come to enjoy the sunset terrace, free-form pool, daybeds, beach bar and international cuisine at The Baker’s Café. Chill-out tunes maintain the laid-back ambience except when top DJs fly in for party nights. • 96/3 Moo 2, Lipa Noi, +66(0)-7791-4500. www.nikkibeach.com/kohsamui

very best. The 66 villas and suites take their design inspiration from the nearby fishing villages, and the use of local materials throughout helps the resort blend seamlessly into its serene surroundings.

Banyan Tree Located on Lamai Bay, this brand new property counts 78 pool villas—that’s right, no rooms or suites. The resort clings to the bay’s steep hillside, offering dramatic views of the sea. It also lays claim to two unique features, the island’s largest infinity pool and the only hydrotherapy wellness center. The style is very classic, with a muted earth-tone palette and an elegant, almost formal, atmosphere. • 99 Moo 4, Lai Mai Beach, Maret, +66(0)-7791-5333. www. banyantree.com
Lamgham Place As Samui is now design hotels central it’s nice to see something that’s neither tacky nor minimalist. The Langham Place’s décor is very classic pan-Asian, featuring lots of wood, tiled roofs and hand-painted walls. There are even little Chinese-style bridges over the pools/canals so that the 77 villas form a small charming village. • 146/24 Moo 4, Lamai Beach, +(0)-7796-0888. http://kohsamui. langhamplacehotels.com
Six Senses Hideaway Perhaps the only thing we can find wrong with the awardwinning Six Senses Hideaway is the lack of beach (there’s one nearby, though). Everything else, from the secluded location, stunning views and blissful spa, equals five star relaxation at its

W Retreat Open Nov 1, 2010, W serves as a bridge between the ultra high-end honeymoon destinations (Banyan Tree, Six Senses) and the designer hotels (X2, The Library). The décor is resolutely third millennium, without a trace of retro charm or tropical modern, but it’s also full of colors and cozy touches. As at Banyan, the concept is villa-only, and there are 75 of them. Definitely geared towards a younger, urban crowd, the resort has a state-of-the-art gym and all the requisite wiring (or should we say wireless-ing) in each room.
X2 Samui Villas by Design The style-centric Design Hotels chain also counts a few other properties on the island, like The Library (see Eat) or the James Bond-esque Villa Beige. To us, the one that strikes the best balance between bare cement dictatorship and real-life comforts is X2. The rooms function as individual bungalows with private mini-pools and gardens, and the open-air lounge by the sea is the perfect spot to sip cocktails all-day. • 14/1 Chaweng Beach, Bo Phut, +66(0)-7723-3033. www.x2resorts. com/samui
