emember Sundays before wooden cutlery, Joe Sloane sausages and dangling light bulbs? You’d go to a hotel, fork out B3,000, plant yourself at a buffet until your pancreas said “stop,” then go home and spend the rest of the afternoon regretting your life choices. In 2017, that’s all over. Brunch-friendly spots serving a mean coffee, a stiff Bloody Mary and eggs Benedict with a perfect Hollandaise have made daytime dining cool. The city is buzzing with independent cafes and bistros serving produce-driven food and letting you connect to an excellent Wi-Fi signal. For BK Magazine’s debut Cafe Society, we’ve rounded up the best of them. Organized by neighborhood, Cafe Society 2017 is all about spending the slowest, most worry-free day you’ve ever had. Because who wants to travel across town for a good single-origin roast or some fluffy pancakes? There’s barely an area of the city which hasn’t been blessed with the daytime-dining revolution. So pull up a warm wood chair, order up some shakshuka with house-made sourdough (you’re at a place that stocks BK, after all) and enjoy our roundup of venues that’ll make your days even better than your nights.

Sathorn-Silom Ceresia Coffee Roasters Owned by a Thai-Venezuelan family, this specialty coffee shop sells single origin and house blended coffee sourced from a variety of farms worldwide, roasted in small batches. Try the filter coffee of the day or a flat white along with a slice of carrot cake and freshly baked pastries. Also make sure you buy some beans to take home. Just be sure to ask the barista for brewing recommendations. Tisco Tower, 48/2 Sathorn Rd.,098445-1992. BTS Sala Daeng. Open daily 8am-6pm. Other branch: Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, 098-251-4327

Everyday by Karmakamet

Set in a 70-year-old wooden house dating back to the Rama 7 era, this Yenakart neighborhood favorite wows you from first glance. The cafe highlights beans by local micro roasters, with two house signature blends: Artisan (Thai, Colombia and Guatemala) and Craftsman (Thai, Brazil and Ethiopia). The menu features various avo-toast options along with some solid pizza (get the chorizo and portabello mushroom), but next door’s Akart Bistro is a better bet for a proper lunch date.

Inside this store’s quaint, wood-paneled facade, you’ll find the most charming branch of Bangkok’s top aromatic products brand. Going beyond home and body fragrances, this space doubles as a coffee shop where cheesecakes, iced matcha frappe and cold lattes are the orders of the day. The shop also sells tableware, pillows, napkins, bags and T-shirts from cool brands like Container and The Sleeveless Garden.

Kumi Restaurant & Healthy Corner The superfood-laden menu (antioxidant this, quinoa that) comes in a space that’s minimalist and vaguely industrial, but the neighborhood expats who favor this local brekkie hot-spot usually sit on its spacious terrace. Wraps, sandwiches, pastas and risottos are joined on the menu by a “Thai corner” and various protein-forward mains, but Kumi is at its best when the onus is on fresh ingredients—vegetarian millefeuille and grilled prawns with spiced eggplant. 71/2 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-6353673. BTS Chong Nonsi. Open Wed-Sun 9am-10pm; Mon 9am-10pm

(Not Just) Another Cup Luka This cafe’s focus on light fare (salads, sandwiches) and coffee has made it a favorite with Sathorn’s busy professionals. On the menu is down-toearth comfort food like breakfast burritos; grilled cheese and sauteed musroom sandwiches served with raspberry ketchup; and the “sloppy meatball sandwich” with fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, sweet marinara and a brioche bun. Delightful decor comes courtesy of Casa Pagoda, with whom it shares its lofty and chic Pan Road dwellings. Casa Pagoda, 64/1 Pan Rd., 02-637-8558. BTS Surasak. Open Mon-Fri 10am-7pm; Sat-Sun 9am-7pm

Two stories of airy daytime-friendly space deal in a familiar combination of egg-focused dishes, prettily poured coffee and cold-pressed juices. Comfort food like fresh pasta and shakshuka sits alongside lightweight muesli bowls and salads. Neighborhood families also drop by on weekends for the decadent French toast. 75/1, Sathorn Soi 10, 02-635-3464 BTS Chong Nonsi. Phrom Phong Sweet Pista Cheesecakes, kakigori and crumbles provide Thonglor’s dessert-seekers with good reason to seek out this sleek, bare concrete cafe in a residential neighborhood. But the menu also packs some full-on meaty flavor courtesy of a dry-aging fridge filled with slabs of US beef. Other all-day crowd-pleasers include burgers and chicken waffles, while those after a good cheesesteak won’t be disappointed either. Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-662-2866. Riverside & Old town Elefin Coffee A stone’s throw from the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, this charming Thai cafe is all about local beans, serving only 100 percent arabica sourced from Chiang Rai, which they roast themselves right here in the cafe. The coffee menu is short as they brew only from an espresso machine, but you can still enjoy a classic cup of coffee. Other branches are at Museum Siam and Hansar Hotel. 394/1-2 Maharaj Rd., 02-6221115, 085-074-4405. Open daily 8am-8pm

Gram Farm to Table, Hideout Nestled in a century-old Rama 5-era house, this charming space may require an effort to find, but the finished result is well worth it. Duck behind Pak Khlong Talat flower market and you’ll find a cozy, contemporary-yet-rustic cafe that plays up the fresh market location with vegetable baskets and metal food carts. The menu spans simple European dishes like roast chicken salad as well as Asian desserts (get the coconut rice dumplings). There’s also a Chiang Mai coffee slow bar. 15 Soi Tha Klang, 02-004-8771. Li-bra-ry Café The coffee’s strong, the clientele’s hip and the riverside location’s perfect at this cafe within the complex of design offices founded by local starchitect Duangrit Bunnag. The adjoining bookstore focuses firmly on Thai publications, and throws out some wonderful gift ideas, from postcard prints to Japan travel guides. To get there, the ferry next to Royal Orchid Sheraton hotel costs just five baht. The Jam Factory, 41/4 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-8610968. Open daily 9am-8pm

Life and Kuisine At this eye-catching bright blue venue on Phra Sumen Road, a group of motorcycle lovers have forged a like-minded community. Siwilai Cafe

The latest player to offer Australian-style coffee culture in Bangok is none other than this cafe chain from Canberra that claims to be the original creator of the “freakshake” (those trending milkshakes piled high with cookies, cream and other dessert toppings). Enjoy dishes like smashed avocado with ricotta on house-made sourdough and Freak Burgers (two Aussie beef patties, double cheese, bacon, bacon jam and barbecue sauce) amid real wood decor, dangling lamps, neon signs and ferns.

Following a shopping spree in Siwilai, Bangkok’s hippest boutique, pull up a mid-century modern dining chair at this blissfully light-filled cafe. A produce-driven menu is matched by excellent cocktails. Get the chicken schnitzel and the fresh and inviting salmon salad, washed down with a glass of Re-charge—gin, melon, cucumber and vanilla. Come the cooler months, it has an outdoor terrace, too.

This photogenic cafe decked out with an eye-catching red brick and wood exterior rolls out all-day Australian breakfast staples and specialty coffee. Regulars order the Egg Mikado, which features sourdough topped with two poached eggs, cured salmon and yellow hollandaise sauce. Also grab the delicious Morning Sunshine cold-press juice, featuring carrot, Granny Smith apple and lime.

Tsujiri Japan’s old-school matcha specialist, Tsujiri, has arrived in Bangkok. The teahouse brand traces its origins back to the original Tsujiri in Kyoto, founded in the green-tea heartland of Uji in 1860 (though today’s legendary Gion Tsujiri in Kyoto is a separate organization). Alongside good ol’ matcha in a bowl and other hot and cold green tea varieties, the menu is studded with contemporary offerings like ice-blended matcha and houjicha, floats and the star matcha soft serve. 7/F (Helix Dining), The EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 091-569-6924. It’s these French guys whose FDA certified factory produces up to two tons of the stuff every day—they even claim that a scoop of La Vanille ice cream is served in Thailand every three seconds.
