Thailand retains world title in chemical use Bangkok, Thailand—Thai officials and farmers both hailed the recent decision by the National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC) to delay a proposed ban on three chemicals used in agriculture. While the three chemicals in question—the herbicides glyphosate and paraquat and the pesticide chlorpyrifos— have been linked to Alzheimer’s, several forms of cancer and other such unsavory diseases, the measure, noted spokesperson Preecha Chaimongkol, helps Thailand remain number one in the world in the application of chemicals in agriculture. “China and Malaysia have just banned paraquat, making it an easy win. Keep those accolades coming,” he said, adding that we'll all die from PM 2.5-induced lung cancer or plastic pollution before these chemicals affect us anyway. The head of the Thai farmers coalition, Somchai Suandokmai, said that the decision will buy farmers time to find other cheap chemicals to poison their produce with, allowing them to scrape by despite wafer-thin margins and an utter lack of government support. “It’s not as if we consume vegetables in this country anyway—we’re just exporting this stuff,” he added. “Besides, have you seen what farang like to eat? These chemicals are the least of their concerns.” While pretty much everyone in government, farming and agricultural exports supported the measure, several key environmental groups called out the Ministry of Agriculture, the Democrat and Palang Pracharath parties, and even the United States for putting politics over people. “Public health has to be a priority, and the data regarding the effect these chemicals have on the human body as well as the ecosystem is damning,” said Udom Chantawong, de facto leader of Bio Unite Against the Right, before adding, “but the real problem is the American deep state. There’s a conspiracy happening behind the scenes they don’t want you to know about, but guess what? We’re onto you guys, and we’ve detailed it all in a 267-page report that we’ll soon publish on Pantip.” The public sparring led Uncle Tu to step in and reiterate his support for his government’s decision making regarding all things. “Look, the number one concern for me is the people, but clearly the NHSC is right about whatever it is you’re talking about—glutamate, glue sticks, glue something,” he said. “Stop undermining national harmony!”

HOT OR NOT

SPEED

In need of R&R on a beautiful beach, a dash of culture, family-friendly activities? The pristine shores of Pattaya beckon, and soon they’ll be just 45 minutes away by bullet train. If it’s fresh air and urban locales you crave, you may prefer the Bangkok to Korat route. Set to open in 2023, this lightningquick line, costing taxpayers only B179 billion, will link the cities in 77 minutes.

Go behind the scenes of Thailand’s first Netflix series INTERVIEW

Best known for horror hits like Shutter (2004) and Ladda Land (2011), director Sophon “Jim” Sakdaphisit was recently tasked with creating Thailand’s first Netflix original, The Stranded (Khweng). We caught up with Jim to talk about his redhot sci-fi drama-thriller and the sudden rise of Thailand’s film industry.

Where did the inspiration for The Stranded come from? The original, rough idea came from the Netflix Los Angeles team. However, at first, the storyline was presented as a way of revealing Thai myths from a foreign perspective. But we thought we should give the world something that has never been seen before if we’re going to represent ourselves to 190 different countries—it just had to be different from other TV series. Netflix’s executive producer, Gally, told us that recently there have been a lot of zombie, vampire and mystery series. With Netflix looking to expand their market in Asia Pacific, they wanted to build on those trends to examine the region’s unique mythologies. They wanted to put more attention-grabbers into the production to make the [The Stranded] more exciting than ever. Where was the series shot?

“We thought we should give the world something that has never been seen before.” CHRISTMAS IS CANCELLED

Upfront-BK#776-13DEC2019.indd 4

The series was filmed at so many places across Thailand, but we mostly shot it on Koh Si Chang and in Chumphon province. What was the process like? You can divide it into two parts: planning and managing. In terms of planning, there was no difference between filming movies and this TV series, whether you’re talking about camera angles, plot or timing. The management system was completely different from what we’re used to, though. We worked with a Thai crew that has only ever produced foreign films, and the head of CG from Netflix worked closely with us, since there are several CG scenes in

ROADS Forget tuk tuk rides. Tourism officials are leaning hard into canal-based itineraries in an effort to relive the glory days—in other words, 1911, when that one Italian guy called Bangkok “a wild and primitive Venice.” Next year, we’ll all be flocking to Khlong Lord, Khlong Prawet Burirom and other such canals you’ve never heard of to experience authentic Thai culture.

the series. The Netflix team was also involved in writing and editing. There was a lot of discussion between us about the script—we didn’t want to make it too Thai or too Western. Why do you think the thriller/horror genre is so popular right now? I think it’s just a coincidence that a lot of thrillers and horrors were released recently. When we first started working on The Stranded, we didn’t intend to define it by a genre [like that]. We just did what we wanted to do. What does Netflix launching a Thai series say about the market? As I mentioned, Netflix is beginning to expand its market in Asia Pacific. We see this as a good opportunity for Thai filmmakers, since we’ve never done projects like this before. What’s in the pipeline for you now? There are other ongoing projects, but they’re all still secrets. Stay tuned! Pakchira Bunphol

STAYING IN Going out was so last month. Now we’re all about staying home at night, just like 70 percent of respondents to a recent survey said they’re doing to make it through this extended economic slump. So hunt for those bargain, past-expiry sushi rolls in the supermarket, move in with grandma, shut off the lights— assuming the electricity authority hasn’t done that for you—and get comfortable.

CHICKEN FARMING Some of us tutor after work or sell things online to make ends meet. Others, like Phalang Pracharath MP Pareena Kraikupt, acquire massive plots of land and raise chickens. So we can all sympathize with our fellow gig economy enthusiast after officials threw her side hustle into flux, pointing out that her poultry farm encroaches on both a protected forest and land reserved for poor farmers.

CHIANG MAI

10 Pattaya and Phuket

11 Chiang Mai’s citywide

Marriott International is set to extend its footprint on Thailand’s biggest beachside cities in the next few years. The group recently announced a three-hotel agreement with Asset World Corporation, under which Asset World is expected to renovate the Metropole Hotel in Phuket Town into a 248-room Courtyard by Marriott in late 2020 and construct both a 398-room JW Marriott and an 900-room, Asiatique-inspired Marriott Marquis in Pattaya before 2024. Add it all up, and that will make over 1,500 new rooms flying the Marriott flag nationwide.

Chiang Mai’s march toward full-fledged “creative city” status continues, as Chiang Mai Design Week returns this December. The annual event takes over the city until Dec 15, with workshops, exhibitions, concerts, pop-up markets and panel discussions held everywhere from the TCDC Chiang Mai to the Three Kings Monument. Some of the standout events on the agenda include a design for the blind exhibition, food stylist-led talks held over a set lunch of Lanna cuisine and workshops on scent-making, natural indigo dyeing and basic drip coffee (it is Chiang Mai, after all).

PHANG-NGA

If you’re looking for an easy place to escape to over the holidays, consider Phang-Nga. The peaceful shores north of Phuket just got another major player with the opening of Le Meridien Khao Lak Resort & Spa. Located along Bang Sak beach, the 269-room hotel features 10 types of rooms—including private pool villas and suites—all with their own spacious balconies (from B3,400/night). The rooms are centered on three impressive lagoon pools that overlook the Andaman Sea. Adding to the laid-back but luxurious holiday vibe are a slew of casual restaurants, including an open-air beachside grill, a tropical beach bar called Coconut Joe’s, a poolside bar and L’Uccello Pizzeria, which slings woodfired pizzas and unique antipasti at dinnertime.

The year is almost over, and that means it’s celebration time. There are plenty of ways to kick back and relax with loved ones in the lead up to the New Year, but one of the most popular in recent years has been beer gardens. Music, flowing brews, friends, what’s not to like? For the past several years, Singha has been orchestrating a “Thailand takeover” of sorts, with beer gardens all over Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, and Chaing Mai. Each one of them is a little different in terms of the host venue and local music acts, and you could say that Singha is the glue that binds them together. Check out the map and dates below, you might just find a few near you.

Tropic City and Sugar Ray join forces

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Huge news for Bangkok’s bar scene: the founders of Tropic City have joined forces with Sugar Ray’s Sitthan “Turk” Sa-Nguankun to launch a new bar. Coming this December, KONKORD will be an intimate cocktail bar, bistro and club with a modern retro-slash-brutalist aesthetic located on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Drawing inspiration from southern Europe’s aperitivo culture, the bar promises an array of amaro and vermouth concoctions, alongside classic and spirit-forward cocktails that will put the spotlight on fresh ingredients. Coffee, sandwiches and small bites will also feature. Placing as much focus on the music as the cocktails, the bar is set to bring a roster of local and international DJs to the decks, playing everything from disco and hip hop to soul and house, while you can expect the same unpretentious, fun-loving atmosphere found at Tropic. Swedish duo Philip Stefanescu and Sebastian De La Cruz have made their mark on Bangkok since their arrival in 2014, beginning with stints at Lady Brett and Uncle before they opened Tropic City in late 2017. Since then, their Charoenkrung hotspot has gained a no. 31 spot in Asia’s 50 Best, as well as being crowned BK BAD Awards Bar of the Year 2019. Meanwhile, Turk spent time at The Bamboo Bar before blessing Bangkok with huge craft cocktail names, including Sugar Ray You’ve Just Been Poisoned, Q&A, Thaipioka, Sugarray Apartment and Alonetogether. Though KONKORD will be in soft opening this month, the grand opening is set to take place in January. We’ll sure be spending a lot more nights on Soi 11 from now on. 18 Sukhumvit Soi 11

14 Acclaimed Swiss chef Andrea Caminada is Bangkok-bound

15 The Mandarin Oriental welcomes a Kyoto-style kaiseki specialist

Come April, Jojo at The St. Regis Bangkok will be replaced with IGNIV by Andreas Caminada from the Swiss chef-owner of three-Michelin-starred Schloss Schauenstein in the Alps. Can’t wait till then? From now through Jan 2, Jojo will be hosting The Peak, a pop-up led by Andreas’ head chef David Hartwig. Expect a six-course menu featuring black cod pumpkin cicorino rosso (red chicory), mackerel avocado daikon wasabi and more, served to just 12 diners per night (B3,200/person; TueSat, 6pm-10pm). G/F, The St. Regis Bangkok, 159 Ratchadamri Rd., 02-207-7777

Occupying Lord Jim’s former private dining space, Kinu by Takagi is the latest project from chef Takagi Kazuo, the affable architect of two-Michelin-starred Kyoto Cuisine Takagi in Ashiya, Japan. He’s bringing Kyo-ryori, or Kyoto-style kaiseki, to this intimate 10-seater filled with Thai teak and Japanese handicrafts. The food is immaculate, and it flows according to the seasons and chef’s whims. Each 10-course dinner (B7,500/person) marries fresh Japanese and Thai ingredients—ideal partners for one of the most interesting sake selections on this side of town. 48 Oriental Ave., 02-659-9000

Bangkok brunch pioneer Roast has launched a new menu of French toast made with housebaked challah bread (B280) and Rigatoni Pesto (B320) with fresh pasta, smoked tomatoes and whipped ricotta. The grilled sea bass (B550) with garlic, herbs, lemon and marinated peppers offers something lighter, while traditionalists can still find favorites like the smashed avocado (B420) and Roast’s crispy fried chicken (B420). New desserts like the coffee mascarpone cake (B280) with brown butter ice cream and the heartwarming crostata (market price) with hand-rolled pastry, seasonal fruit and ice cream hit the sweet spot.

ICE, ICE, BABY Fresh off his fine dining restaurant Sorn earning two Michelin stars, chef Supaksorn “Ice” Jongsiri is set to about another branch of his beloved southern Thai restaurant, Baan Ice, in Lad Phrao.

CH-CH-CHANGES After three editions, Vesper’s long-standing Art Book menu has run its course. Now, head barman Supawit “Palm” Muttarattana has rolled out a spanking new menu titled “Contrast,” which continues the bar’s tradition of taking a conceptual approach to drinks, this time contrasting and matching opposing flavors. Stay tuned for details.

JINGLE BELLS The lights are officially on at Siam Kempinski and Santa himself is in the house throughout December. If you’re too grown up for all that, their festive afternoon tea buffet (B950) featuring a line-up of turkey pie, lobster brioche, macarons, cookies and apple pie is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

16 Stage is run by Robuchon alums The buzz: Former L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon chef Jay Sangsingkaew is behind Ekkamai’s new hotspot Stage, and she and her exRobuchon crew are dropping some show-stopping fare. The decor: Tucked away in an Ekkamai alley, Stage is noticeable only for its tiny blue neon chef’s hat. The interior boasts deep hues of midnight blue, simple yet refined cream banquettes and walls lined in delicate floral wallpaper. The dining room can accommodate up to 30 people, but the place to be is the semiprivate chef’s table overlooking the open kitchen. The food: If French technique is what you’re after, you’re in luck. The saucier , which in French kitchens is considered the most vital part of the brigade, is a powerful weapon here, but each chef brings their own skills to the table. The menu—four (B1,900), six (B2,900) and eight courses (B3,900)—will change every two months. For now, expect signatures like otoro sashimi with sesame paste and buttermilk curd, melt-in-your-mouth lobster served with beurre blanc and charred sucrine (cos lettuce), and a random yet delicious hot dog topped with black truffle shavings

New+Noted-BK#776-13DEC2019_NEW.indd 22

and served with pickled winter melon. Pastry chef Ja Limpichart, who studied in Paris and apprenticed at Le Quartier du Pain, oversees playful takes on nostalgic classics like baba au rhum, but the pièce de résistance might be the dessert trolley, which offers all sorts of sweet treats. The drinks: Louis Pronritt, most recently the head sommelier at Bangkok Marriot Marquis Queen’s Park, has curated an interesting list that includes several natural and biodynamic wines. Start with the Cremant de Jura (B400), a crisp brut from France, move on to the Trebbiano (B350), an Italian white that pairs perfectly with small bites, and end with the Blaufrankisch (B450), an organic food-friendly Austrian red. Why we’d go back: This all-star cast of young chefs is destined to put their stamp on Bangkok’s food scene in 2020. Megan Leon

17 Get a taste of Korean island life at this organic restaurant

18 Bostonian James Beard Award-winners come to Thonglor

19 Stuff yourself with these White Castlestyle burgers

Inspired by popular picnic spot Jeju Island in South Korea, the quaint, all-white Picnic in Jeju (391 Chulalongkorn Soi 22, 082-067-9308) is perfect for lunch. Organic produce is key in dishes like the bibimbap (B220) and Korean fried chicken (B220)—created using the owner’s mom's recipe and fried a la minute. Also on offer are classics like the kimchi pancake (B150) and spicy kimchi pork and tofu (B220), while Jeju’s famous mandarin oranges feature in the likes of the Jeju orange salad (B195) and Jeju mandarin coffee (B99).

Located in Thonglor's 72 Courtyard, Little Donkey (2/F, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55), comes from James Beard Award-winning chefs Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette—the masterminds behind Boston landmarks Coppa, Toro and Little Donkey. Dubbed an “international modern izakaya,” the casual restaurant boasts an Asian fusion menu dreamt up by Top Chef Thailand competitor Steve Doucakis (formerly of Bunker). Expect everything from kimchi and beef tongue yakisoba (B380) to scallop tartare nori wraps (B210) and American cheesy spinach dip (B250). End on a sweet note with the house favorite oatmeal cookie cake (B150), topped with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream.

Formerly at The Commons, Stax (759 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 087-0877060) now has a permanent home in Thonglor’s new street food community mall, Saphan 55. With their thin, perfectly seared beef sandwiched between lightly toasted square buns, burgers here are more like sliders— reminiscent of U.S. fast food chain White Castle. Go for the best-selling Stax cheeseburger (B109), which comes with beef or pork, topped with grilled onions, dill pickles, mustard, ketchup and cheese. Their super affordable combos are surefire winners—Set A (B200) includes two classic burgers and fries. You’ll also find jalapeno poppers (B145/eight pieces) and crispy chicken nuggets (B50/four pieces) on the menu.

Helmed by Dutch national Roxanne Lange—one of the Marriott International’s youngest chefs de cuisine—The Allium Bangkok (3/F, 61 Wireless Rd., 02-650-8800) has replaced The Reflexions at The Athenee Hotel. Amid red and white interiors, the French-leaning set menus draw from chef Roxanne’s time at Savelberg Bangkok. The full 10-course menu (B3,280) charts a delightfully piquant Chiang Mai tomato salad, creamy Thai mudcrab atop crunchy cucumber spaghetti and French Moulard duck liver countered with sweet apple and crunchy nut crumble. Plant-based menus are also available (from B1,800).

Run by the same team as Ari’s pastel and Art Deco Baby Bar, Wander (64 Soi Pan, 02-235-6848) takes a different approach. Low lighting, graffiti and dark metal touches set the stage for live music every night. Expect elevated, well-executed Thai dishes and bar food plus cocktails that span the flavor spectrum—from fruity and floral, like the lychee- and elderflower-fueled Wanderer (B320) to spirit-forward, like the whiskey-, cocoa- and fernet branca-laced Hunter (B320). Run by chef Jutamas “Som” Theantae in partnership with Natthorn “Edge” Rakchana, founder of the namesake aromatherapy brand, the space feels like a dreamscape, with curved white walls, gold-tinted mirrors and exposed bricks. Meanwhile, 12-course dinners (B2,500; add B2,500 for Champagne pairing) meander from singularly named dishes like Wealth (Indian spicerubbed lamb) to Street (southern Thai curry) to Pre-motion (smoked black cod served sushi-style).

Falafel, the Middle East’s all-time feel-good street food, is well-represented in Bangkok. But if you aren’t careful when you’re cooking, it’s easy for these deepfried, doughy balls of deliciousness to go pear-shaped. Here’s your guide to finding falafel nirvana in the city. By BK Staff

Beirut

Appearance: SpeckWinner! led with sesame seeds and fresh herbs, these falafel have the prettiest appearance of them all. Taste: Garlic hits you first, followed by a hint of lemon, herbs and spices. Top that with a perfectly soft, moist texture and you’ll falafel in love. Verdict: Fala-feels. Location: Ploen Chit Center, Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-656-7377.

Hummus Boutique

Who makes Bangkok’s best... falafel?

New+Noted-BK#776-13DEC2019_NEW.indd 25

Runner Up!

Appearance: While the salad-green interior looks uniformly appetizing, the inconsistent shape suggests that these balls of joy are handmade. Taste: Not enough spice and a bit too heavy on the parsley and coriander. Even so, we could eat these all day. Verdict: Fried salad. Location: 999 Sukhumvit Rd., 092-819-8131.

Rawabina

Appearance: Donut-like balls with a nice crust. The light brown interior suggests these have absolutely

no greens inside of them, though. Taste: Soft and moist but slightly sweet. Not much happening in the herb department, but otherwise pretty alright. Verdict: You donut want to miss this! Location: Sukhumvit Soi 23, 092-820-2828.

Nadimos

Appearance: The presentation appears carefully thought out, and they look very inviting, with a perfect light brown crust. But is that mee krob sprinkled on top of them? Taste: We’ll hand it to them: these don’t lack flavor. Very garlicky, very herbal and very spicy, but also very dry. Verdict: Thai taste, na. Location: Sukhumvit Soi 24, 02261-9816.

Al Saray

Appearance: Did we accidentally order banana cake? No? Okay, then. Taste: They don’t skimp on the spices—specifically, the cardamom. Problem is that spice overwhelms what should be a delicate balance of herbs, garlic and chickpeas. Verdict: Al Sorry. Location: 60/2 Soi Silom 2/1, 02-234-4988.

Hummus Heads

Appearance: A deep, dark brown on the outside, as if they spent a little too long in the fryer. An off-yellow color in the middle does not bode well, either. Taste: Careful not to crack your teeth—these falafel are as hard as a shotput. And they taste strangely sour, like cornbread gone wrong. Verdict: Could shatter the window of a Tesla. Location: P.R. Home, 270, Thonglor Soi 10, 097-193-1912.

Shoshana

Appearance: If the Yikes! last ones spent too much time in the fryer, then these must have been cooked in hot oil overnight. Taste: They smell chemical, almost metallic, suggesting that they were cooked in either cheap or old oil. Inside, the texture is like sand, which leaves us searching for water. Our second order from Shoshana two days later tastes fresher and more flavorful—if a little too garlicky—suggesting inconsistency is the name of the game here. Verdict: Fala-fail. Location: 88 Chakrabongse Rd., 02-282-9948.

Pizzeria Mazzie HHHH Park Lane Ekkamai, 23 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 02-060-8822. Open Tue-Sun 5:30-10pm

“This soi has seen better days,” was our first thought as we walked down Sukhumvit Soi 63 after 6pm. Saturated with high-rise condos, dilapidated buildings, an obscure-looking karaoke bar, neon-lit Japanese restaurants and massage parlors, it’s hard to imagine that five minutes later we’ll be arriving at one of Bangkok’s best pizzerias. But hey, Bangkok’s full of surprises, right? Tucked inside the Park Lane community mall, Pizzeria Mazzie enjoys a warm minimalist aesthetic, courtesy of a glasshouse-front, a heavy dose of marble and black tile walls. While these elements usually scream “needlessly swanky,” the space instead feels genuinely laidback. At 6:30pm on a recent visit, the majority of the tables were already occupied by groups of well-dressed families and young couples, while the bar—the best seats in the house, where you can watch all the action up close—were filled up with single diners. All the while, the music changed from upbeat gypsy jazz to classic R.E.M. The menu here is pleasantly spartan, stripped back to just pizzas and mains split between a red and white sauce base, plus a few starters and one dessert. The highly comforting, fist-sized Mazzie Meatballs (B490) are seasoned all the way through and have wonderful texture, while the garlic bread is everything you want it to be: pleasingly soft yet crunchy, with a well-balanced, garlicky-salty flavor. These are ideal vessels to mop up every last lick of the meatballs’ rich and robust marinara sauce. Even more potent is the roasted carrot and ricotta salad (B330), a simple dish that nevertheless takes you on a ride, from Price guide Under B500 B500-1,000 B1,000-2,000 B2,000-3,000 BBBBB Over B3,000

earthy hazelnuts and carrots glistening with apple cider vinaigrette to a rich, salty finish from a generous dollop of ricotta cheese. But the stars here are the hand-tossed pizzas, whipped out of a custom-made, lowdome Acunto oven from Naples. The smoked buffalo cheese pizza (B590) has the perfect slightly singed crust, oozes with creamy mozzarella and offers a peppery kick from basil leaves. Even better is the sinfully delicious supreme (B530), which, despite its somewhat soggy dough, owes its success to the generous amount of pepperoni and smoky, caramelized onions it comes with. The lone dessert, homemade pot de creme (B270), is deceptively simple—we kept digging for more of that thick dark chocolate topped with fresh vanilla cream. That goes particularly well washed down with a Black Butte Porter from Deschutes (B280), one of a handful of quality craft brews available along with wines and cocktails. With its unpretentious vibe, solid selection of craft beers and comforting food, it’s easy to see why this New York style pizzeria has fast become one of Bangkok’s top pizza purveyors. Order: Roasted carrot and ricotta salad (B330), Mazzie Meatballs (B490), smoked buffalo cheese pizza (B590), The Hot Hipster pizza (B510), Black Butte Porter beer (B280)

With over 50 shopping malls in the city, it’s clear that we and our 30 million annual visitors just can’t get enough retail therapy. Here’s the low-down on Bangkok’s biggest players. By Dhipkawee Sriyananda Selley

Mallrats 1 Siam Paragon Bangkok’s original ultra-luxury mall has yet to fade from the spotlight, thanks to its prime location in the city’s biggest shopping hub. The towering glass facade houses a huge selection of high-end clothing stores—from Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent to trendy high-street favorites like Zara, H&M, Uniqlo and COS—as well as a wide array of restaurants and a huge, if rammed, food court. Entertainment spots include a bowling alley, an IMAX cinema, a multi-purpose hall for concerts and exhibitions, and Siam Ocean World, Southeast Asia’s biggest aquarium. What we like: Kinokuniya—hands down the biggest and best English bookstore in Bangkok. Although the books aren’t cheap, the store offers a huge range of genres and new releases. Who goes there: Everyone— elephant pant-clad tourists, luxe shoppers, university students, your aunts and uncles, and that high school friend you never thought you’d bump into again.

2 Siam Center Built in 1973, Siam Center is one of Bangkok’s first shopping malls. Thanks to its revamp in 2013, the four-story mall boasts a very young and fashion-forward vibe, with a high-low mix of hip boutiques that cater to on-trend shoppers. It’s home to some of the very best Thai fashion, from big names like Greyhound Original, Fly Now, Rotsaniyom and Milin to streetwear favorites like Leisure Projects, P.Mith and Q Design and Play. Other international brands worth checking out include Lush, Korean multi-label store Aland and Japanese beauty megastore @cosme. What we like: The number of snazzy multi-label stores offering cutting-edge Thai design—think The Selected, Absolute Siam Store and The Wander Room. Who goes there: Uni students and aspiring fashion ’grammers.

3 Siam Discovery This mall reopened in mid-2016 with a bright, futuristic look, courtesy of Japanese designer Oki Sato. The uber-hip mall offers shoppers a more fluid, interactive experience, whether through its co-working space, mobile shopping app or twofloor Virgin Active. Retail options run the gamut from Thai fashion designers to of-the-moment global brands: on top of Japanese cult labels like Suicoke and Issey Miyake, expect niche European names like French eyewear Izipizi, Belgian clothing brand Essentiel Antwerp and Danish womenswear label Ganni. The mall also boasts tons of tech and gadgets. What we like: This is the place to check up on the city’s latest fashion and lifestyle trends, thanks to cool pop-ups (Acne Studios, Marni, Rally Movement, Atmos Lab) and “Ecotopia,” an eco-friendly zone where you can check out the hottest green products by Thai designers. Who goes there: Gadget geeks and thirty-something urbanites.

4 CentralWorld Offering 550,000-sq-meters of retail space, CentralWorld is Bangkok’s second largest shopping mall, behind IconSiam. It’s home to more than 400 shops (mainly international high-street brands), an upscale movie theater offering 15 screens courtesy of SF World Cinema and scores of restaurants. It's attached to Isetan, a Japanese department store; Groove, a dining and nightlife spot that gathers together some of the city’s best-known restaurants, gastro bars and patisseries (HOBS, Greyhound Cafe, Jones the Grocer and 1881 by Water Library); and Centara Grand, a luxury hotel with a rooftop bar. What we like: We dig the second floor’s well-curated labels, including Pomelo, Pull & Bear, Sephora and Panpuri, as well as shops for sneakerheads like Atmos, 24 Kilates and Upperground. Who goes there: High school kids, young couples and busloads of Chinese tourists.

5 Central Embassy Phloen Chit’s luxury space dedicates eight floors to world-leading fashion brands, including Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Louboutin and Paul Smith, as well as highstreet names like Zara, Topshop and Muji. Food-wise, you’ll find high-end eateries like Le Salon de L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, New York-based dessert bar Chikalicious and French patisserie Paul. There’s also a deluxe cinema, where you can lie down under a duvet and enjoy a glass of wine, as well as Open House, a “co-living” space boasting even more dining options, a co-working area and a library lookalike with some 20,000 rare art books. What we like: Eathai—probably the most unique food court-slashmarket in any Bangkok shopping mall. Head there for regional delicacies and street food favorites like northern-style sausages, kanom jeen nam ya poo (rice vermicelli with spicy crab curry) and som tam. Who goes there: A-list celebrities and models.

6 Samyan Mitrtown

7 IconSiam

Part of Chulalongkorn University’s reinvention of the Sam Yan neighborhood, the 222,000-sq-meter Samyan Mitrtown caters almost solely to students and local residents. Highlights include Bangkok’s biggest Muji to date, minimal pampering spot Namm Spa, sprawling arts and crafts store Medium and More, and arthouse cinema House Samyan, relocated from RCA to the mall’s fifth floor. The complex also features an array of mid-range restaurants (think Coffee Club, Bon Chon and, yes, Taco Bell), an MBK-operated food court featuring street food vendors from the surrounding communities and Samyan Co-Op, a student-baiting multi-story co-working space. What we like: House Samyan. Period. Who goes there: Sam Yan residents and Chula students. Who else did you expect?

“Paragon by the River” is home to over 500 shops—including superluxury icons like Hermes, Versace and Fendi—100 restaurants and two posh apartment buildings. Several brands made their Thailand debut here. See: the giant Japanese department store Siam Takashimaya and the two-story Apple Store, as well as the Nike Kicks Lounge and Adidas Originals store, both said to be the largest in Southeast Asia. All 15,000 sq meters of the ground floor belong to Sook Siam, where you can explore regional Thai food and shop for traditional arts and crafts. What we like: Go for the Apple Store and Icon Cineconic—a lustworthy VIP cinema—or the “Iconic Multimedia Water Feature,” which turns into a sound and light show every evening, if you’re into that kind of thing. Who goes there: IG boyfriends faithfully capturing their girlfriends posing beside water features.

8 The EmQuartier Built in 2015, this is part of The Mall Group’s B20 billion restyling of Phrom Phong as the Em District, a cluster of luxury hotels, offices, residences and entertainment facilities. Inside, you’ll find flagship stores from Jimmy Choo, Stella McCartney, 3.1 Phillip Lim and A Bathing Ape, plus cult Asian brands like Japan’s Beams and South Korea’s Stylenanda. The mall houses numerous upscale restaurants and local cafe chains (D’Ark, Dean & Deluca, Roast), plus Southeast Asia’s tallest manmade waterfall. It’s also home to a posh Virgin Active, which features a club lounge, indoor pool and spa. What we like: We’re suckers for multi-label shops, and here you’ll find both Another Story, which deals largely in stationery and home decor, and men’s lifestyle brand Another Man Story. The mall also strikes a nice balance between luxury de signer brands and high-street labels. Who goes there: Expat families, international school teens and Eurasian models.

9 Emporium Emporium, one of Bangkok’s first luxury shopping malls, combines upscale fashion, dining, entertainment and supermarket shopping. Thanks to the Em District overhaul in 2013, the mall has a contemporary vibe now, with finger-on-the-pulse Thai boutiques (Janesuda, Disaya, Vickteerut) alongside luxury fashion names like Loewe, Chloe, Dior Homme and Gucci. Eating options span everything from Another Hound Cafe and Ros’Niyom to Le Dalat and Paul. Head up to the fifth floor to catch the latest blockbuster flicks at luxe Emprivé Cineclub. Opt for First Class (from B800) and gain access to an exclusive bar and lounge. What we like: It’s easy to navigate and blissfully quieter and less crowded than its counterparts. Who goes there: Interracial couples, deep-pocketed Chinese tourists and hi-so khun nai.
