That this museum and library is the city’s latest riverside hangout Perched beside the Rama VIII bridge, the Bank of Thailand’s new Learning Center just opened to commemorate the bank’s 75th anniversary. After four years of renovations, Thailand’s first paper-money manufacturing plant is now home to a spacious public library, co-working space and variety of money-related exhibits. Access is free, though some services will eventually require membership—with annual fees touted to be no higher than B1,500. That Liam Gallagher left Bangkok fans asking, “is that all?” The sold-out Jan 12 show saw the former Oasis frontman deliver a rock ‘n’ roll masterclass before abruptly cutting short his set. After barely an hour on stage at BITEC Bangna, Gallagher declined to return for an encore, much to the disappointment of fans who paid upwards of B3,600 to attend. Despite pitch-perfect performances of Oasis staples like “Rock n’ Roll Star” and “Morning Glory,” Gallagher acknowledged the unsatisfying end to the show on Twitter: “Thank you Bangkok for lastnight [sic] I was struggling with sound hence my moody chops.” That a new-in-town craft beer wants you to take a bar crawl of Soi Nana When Hong Kong’s Young Master brewery launches in Bangkok on Feb 3 it’ll do so with a pub crawl of one of the city’s most thriving nightlife epicenters. Kicking off at 3pm at Cho Why, the night will take in stops at Chinese-themed bars Pijiu and Ba Hao. B100 gets you a guidebook, tasting glass and a T-shirt, while the brewery’s total 13 beers, which cover seasonal, “avant-garde” flavor profiles, will each be B100/150ml or B180/300ml. That Celine Dion will bring the feels to Bangkok The Canadian pop singer is set to perform weepy classics such as “All By Myself,” “Because You Loved Me” and the Titanic refrain “My Heart Will Go On” at Impact Arena on Jul 23. The baht is at a three year high. That’s a nightmare for anyone who works in shipping but awesome if you just booked a holiday to post-Brexit London. Over here, we’d be way more excited if we hadn’t just turned our life savings into super-cryptocurrency bitcoin, which last week tumbled 13% overnight and lost US$2,000 in value.

First Boss, now Yingluck. If things carry on like this, there’ll be more Thai plutocrats in Mayfair than are sitting in chauffeured minivans at Asoke junction. News that our former premier is in the UK capital blindsided our new, green uniformed overlords, who’d sworn blind she was with ol’ Square Face in Dubai. Clearly, they don’t know what the shopping’s like in Burligton Arcade versus Ibn Buttuta Mall.
Hot: Anonymity
Not: Michelin Stars
One month of Michelin stardom and Jay Fai’s owner and head chef has had enough, according to an article on Eater. “Many people come just to see and take pictures and not necessarily to eat,” says the goggle-wearing wok maestro. Welcome to Bangkok food culture in 2018, Auntie Fai.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
4
Ekachai Hongkangwan, 43, has made a name for himself by courting media headlines with his activism. In June 2017, he was detained while attempting to install a replica of a missing plaque commemorating the 1932 revolution. For his most recent stunt, he tried to give deputy prime minister-slash-minister of defense Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan an old Seiko, an allusion to Prawit’s recently revealed multi-million-baht watch collection.
How did you come by your unique style of protest? Before 2014 [the most recent military coup], protests took the form of big groups of people wearing yellow or red. That kind of protest was banned after the military takeover, and many activists have kept quiet for fear of being arrested. The sign-holding, group-gathering protests are gone. So I came up with an idea of protesting in a way that wouldn’t get me into legal trouble.
Tell us about being detained by the military. I was detained at military prison twice plus once at Kanchaburibased camp, and countless times in other rooms. The first two times at the military prison I was in solitary confinement, which was horrible I have to admit. I was released within a day. Last October, after I vowed to wear red on cremation day, I was given the options of military prison or Kanchanaburi. I picked Kanchanaburi. I was told to go sightseeing and given B5,000, which ended up paying for the meals of my guard of four police officials and one soldier, which made me look like a Mafioso. On the day of the cremation, the 26th, I was wearing red and they refused to take me outside.
How did you become an activist? I used to sell lottery tickets. Under Thaksin Shinawatra’s regime, I was making money off a plan for machines that sold lottery tickets. I didn’t care about politics or Thaksin. The new government canceled the machines, which cut my income completely. That’s when I starting protesting.
Did those experiences scare you? Not really. It’s more annoying, because I’m followed all the time. They know where I’m going, so why not meet me at my destination? Plus, once you are in the news, they [the junta] wouldn’t dare ‘disappear’ you. I also always post my planned activities on Facebook.
How did you come up with the watch idea? It’s my own watch, which I bought in 2004. I don’t want the news about Prawit’s expensive watches to fade away, and for people to act like nothing ever happened, so I’ll continue to trail him with the watch and to keep the issue alive.
How important to you is freedom of expression? It’s important under a normal government, but with this military government, where there is so little of it, it’s even more important to speak out. If we keep quiet, we are just allowing everything to pass. I never used to care about politics. Only when it affected me did I realize that it actually affects everyone. Thai people are accustomed to not being confrontational, and they just end up getting used to the new environment. What’s your next move? I’m still trying to give this cheap watch to Prawit. I don’t really plan my next moves. I play it by ear and keep up with the news, but I always post my activities first on Facebook. Do you think we will have an election any time soon? Definitely not this year. The military is planning to set up their own party and it won’t happen if they feel like they can’t win. That’s why they keep changing their decisions about the election. How Cheap is Bangkok? By Kasidit Srivilai, designed by Anunya Chobnitas

T
he baht is at a three year high and rising. That's awesome for your savings, but it also means this city's more expensive than you might have once thought. And with new import levies coming into effect that could drive up the price of your favorite imported produce even further, the price of living in nice neighborhoods and eating and drinking at posh restaurants looks set to get worse. So, here's how the price of living in Bangkok currently compares to cities around the world.
Dinner in a michelin restaurant
Cocktail at a hip bar
Bangkok’s tradition of cheap street food persists, for now. But as the culinary culture has matured and globalized, the number of venues with a price point on par with international fine-dining restaurants has gone up. Michelin stars augur Michelin-tier prices. Cocktail menus seem to be on a similar inflation schedule. So how much does it cost to eat and drink out in Bangkok?

Why is imported alcohol more expensive than other cities in the world?
Thailand
malaysia
china
B300
B256
B160-350
The reason for the high price of imported alcohol in Thailand comes from income tax on the part of importers, who are obliged to pay on the date of import, VAT and, the biggest factor, excise tax—something that's not common in other countries. Alcohol is considered as a luxury good here, so there’s added excise tax, leading to the higher price.

escapes KOH KOOD
Vanishing Point Here’s why Koh Kood is still Thailand’s ultimate island to escape it all. By Oliver Irvine
Soneva Kiri
Away Resort
Soneva Kiri
S
ince roaring onto the luxury traveler’s map of the world in 2009, when the ultra-exclusive Soneva Kiri resort opened (price of entry, B40,000/night), Koh Kood has managed to hold onto its quiet beaches and laid-back charm. As its neighboring Gulf island near the Cambodian border, Koh Chang, slips further and further into package-tourism disrepair, the effort of traveling that little bit further to Koh Kood (1.5 hours’ speedboat ride versus a 40-minute ferry) becomes ever more rewarding. Here’s why.
It has incredible beaches The island’s west coast is dotted with pristine beaches from north to south, all blessed with icing sugar-soft sand. When the sun shines (which is often), this gives Koh Kood’s sea a clarity and shimmer that’s unbeaten. The only spot to really have suffered from anything approaching development is Ao Tapao, where the concrete jetty sticking into the water is great for jumping off but less so for looking at. Our tip is to head one bay further south to Klong Chao. The “center” of Koh Kood tourism never has more than about 50 people draped on its sand even in high season, while the water is a blissful, lapping shade of gray-green-blue. At Klong Chao you also have access to dive centers, low-key bars and restaurants without being limited to your resort (taking on the staff of Castaway pub [087-1364036] at pool is about as crazy as things get). Bang Bao, meanwhile, is a lake-quiet alcove with rustic wooden piers jutting into it as well as one of the island’s best snorkeling reefs. For the full castaway experience, head to Ao Prao in the south, which remains a barely touched crescent moon bay lapped by that beautifully clear Koh Kood water.
There’s more to do than lie on the beach Koh Kood’s showpiece waterfall, Klong Chao Waterfall, is the one you always imagined: thick, wide and pummeling, surrounded by a deep green pool where the locals have erected a death-defying rope swing. It’s a bit of a struggle to clamber onto, but provides wonderfully safety-bereft plunges into cool freshwater. There are two other waterfalls on the island as well, Hua Ngu and Klong Yai Ki, though Klong Chao is the most impressive. Divers need head to BB Divers (082-220-6002, bbdivers-koh-kood.com), who for B3,000 upwards will take you on a trip to the abundant coral reefs on neighboring islands, or get you PADI certified for B11,000. Another unique feature of Koh Kood is its tranquil water inlets, which make for excellent kayak adventures through untouched mangroves—with the occasional restaurant-slash-bar to moor up at and refuel, too (see below). Try setting off up the inlet leading from Klong Chao Beach, where most resorts offer a free kayak with your accommodation.
There are resorts for all budgets If you have the means to fly by private prop plane and stay at Soneva Kiri (starting B40,000, www.soneva.com/soneva-kiri), then you can probably forget the rest of the advice in this story. The expansive, jungle-luxe resort provides for all your needs across an entire peninsula on the north of the island. Its look of Robinson Crusoe chic—driftwood walkways, rope-and-peg door locks, treehouse restaurants—comes in villas so huge that they put most family homes to shame. The 400-sq-meter Beach Pool Villa, for example, encompasses a vast wraparound swimming pool, out-
Away Resort
door bathroom with a choice of showers and baths, walk-in dressing room, a garden big enough for a five-a-side football game and, the pies de resistance, your own little beach. It’s all massively excessive and entertaining, but for a fraction of the price (starting B4,000), you can find an almost as secluded—if rather less lavish— stay at Away Koh Kood (awayresort.com). One of the first resorts to open on the island sits on the other side of the inlet from Klong Chao Beach, which you access via a leisurely, five-minute kayak paddle. Expect charming, personable service, comfortable, wellkept rooms that more than justify their price point (especially if you scoop one of the frequent last-minute booking.com deals) and an excellent breakfast spread. While Koh Kood remains secluded from the backpacker trail, budget digs do exist. Siam Beach Resort on Bang Bao Beach (B800, goo.gl/mKyHcJ) provides standard backpacker hut fare, while Gumm Lonely Club (B1,500, www. fb.com/gummlonelyclub) is a beautiful little spot on a water inlet where your room sits with your own kayak parked out front.
The local fishing villages are still fishing villages They’re not just tourist attractions. Fishing remains a full-time occupation on the island, and there are two working fishing villages where inquisitive visitors are welcome to take a stroll. Both Ao Yai in the south and Ao Salad in the northeast (beside the island’s main pier) make for wonderful strolls along wooden walkways as locals busily sift through their catch and weave fishing nets by hand. The smattering of tourists who come through can also take up pews in the equal smattering of seafood restaurants like See the Sun (see below) in Ao Yai, where the fresh catch is displayed in live tanks out front at market prices.
RESTAURANTS Island Eats
FOR SOMETHING FANCY
FOR FRESH SEAFOOD
FOR LOCAL BEERS AND BARBECUE
FOR RIVERSIDE VIEWS
Soneva Kiri dispels all myths about island cuisine with its fastidious clifftop restaurant, where a Japanese head chef presides over classic, fancy bistro fare. His bouillabaisse (a French seafood soup) rivals the best we’ve tasted.
See the Sun in Ao Yai fisherman village lets you buy live seafood by the kilo at low prices. Tuck into classic yellow curry crab and grilledto-smoky-perfection prawns (B350/kg) as you watch the local fishermen at work.
When the islanders find time to knock off work and grab a beer, they head to Nang Prae Moo Krata, a roadside moo kra-ta (pork barbecue) shack, where a platter of pork to grill at your table will set you back next to nothing.
When kayaking up the inlet that leads from Klong Chao Beach, stop at Mangrove for classic Thai fare like somtam and deep-fried garoupa in garlic.

Baroque Brews What happens when you cross 17th-century baroque with contemporary industrial? Chiang Mai’s Luciano Coffee Bar (www.fb.com/Lucianocoffeebar): an extravagantly beautiful cafe with moody-blue wood panels, exposed brick and pendant light fixtures, dotted with faux-antique miscellany. It’s a cozy space, which somehow makes the luscious ice cream on offer feel more decadent. The vanilla is a crowd favorite, but the special flavors show more flair, from Oreo Cheese Cream to Collagen Boost Yogurt (B25/scoop). Jazz up that sweet ice cream with a punch of strong espresso in the B65 affogato, or mellow out with a marshmallow and cream hot chocolate, which pairs wonderfully with the Belgian waffles with ice cream (B159).

PHUKET
Great Divide In Gotha (www.fb.com/gothaphuket), Patong has a new bar and restaurant, each housed in entirely different stylistic ecosystems. One, the restaurant, is done in that familiar industrial chic, here tinged amber by the lighting and managing to feel both flashy and bare. The food is generally fusion, which here spans at least Mediterranean and Asian cuisines. Recommended dishes include a rack of lamb (B720) and the Chicken Supreme (B420). Over at the bar, the decor evokes a warehouse made classy by hanging wine glasses and trunk tables. The cocktails spin tropical favorites, including a raspberry daiquiri and what’s called a Passion Colada. Open every day from 6pm to 4am.

Isaan Soul Into the fray of Thai cuisine at Hua Hin’s Seenspace (www. seenspace.com/huahin) comes Der, a bar specializing in Isaan fare. The regional cuisine’s made all the more mouthwatering when accompanied by booze. The venue taps into that instinct using stark monochrome and concrete, with large black-framed windows. The kitchen, too, is glassedin, meaning you can watch the chef bring dishes from the heart of Isaan to life. Not to be missed are the tam lao kung muak yad sai (grilled shrimp and stuffed squid dressed in somtam sauce with dill, B190) and suup nhor mhai (spicy bamboo shoot salad, B70), which is salty and tangy—practically made for dipping sticky rice.

Bangkok is about to welcome the largest Ikea in Southeast Asia. Those tired of making the trek to Bangna can now make the slightly-less-arduous schlep to Bangyai across the river in Nonthaburi when the Swedish furniture and home accessories behemoth opens its second branch on Mar 15. At 50,000 sq meters, the store next to Central Westgate is considerably bigger than the original Ikea in Bangna (around 44,000 sq meters). It will boast a total of 29 checkout stands across all three floors, and 1,900 parking spaces. No trip to Ikea is complete without a visit to the canteen, and this one’s promising a “branch exclusive” menu. For those not driving, the easiest way to get there is to take the new MRT Purple Line to Bangyai Market Station.
Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. That’s really a 3-in-1 envelope set you’re looking at. Louis Vuitton’s new Monogram Canvas Pochette Kiragami is available in Bangkok. It doesn’t come in full leather. Instead, it’s monogrammed canvas on the outside and cowhide leather on the inside. At B22,500 per set, you’ll be getting an iPad case (23 cm x 16.5 cm), a passport holder (15.5 cm x 11.5 cm) and a card case (10 cm x 7 cm) in one. Is this another reason to spend your bonus or a good choice for a last-minute gift? Probably, yes. M/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd, 02-664-7272. Open daily 10am-8pm

Forrest Bronze Tree Stone Watch
YOLK Solar Paper
You might have already guessed by looking it at, but the Forrest Bronze Tree Stone Watch uses a real stone for the watch face. Something you might not know: every stone used is unique, meaning each watched purchased is totally exclusive. Save yourself from wearing the same old minimalist watches everyone else has and pick up one of these instead.
You can ditch the portable battery pack for good if you tote one of these Solar Paper chargers from South Korean brand Yolk. Its lightweight construction and sleek look mean you can carry it anywhere without getting dirty looks from your fashionable friends, and it fits great into a notebook you are already using. Bangkok has more than its fair share of sun—almost too much—now you can use it to your advantage.

Rocketbook Wave
Grow Up Paper Plant Notebook
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a notebook that never runs out of pages? Well, here it is, and it might be our favorite notebook ever made. The Rocketbook Wave is a digital notebook that looks and feels like a real notebook, but uses digital paper—giving you an unlimited supply of pages to jot down the most important things of the day. You can also capture pages, like a screen-cap, and upload them to the cloud for later use.
At first glance, you might think it’s just a cliche, normal notebook from Grow Up Paper. Think again. Feel like throwing your notes away? Why don’t you plant them in some soil and watch them grow into full-on plants as the weeks go on? The concept is called “seed paper,” and allows you to actually make the environment better instead of throwing things away.

RESTAURANT
French Start After 60 years dominating Bangkok’s suki scene, chain restaurant Coca is going French. The ubiquitous buffet brand has now opened French St. restaurant at O.P. Garden, where it offers Provencal comfort food courtesy of the Southern France-hailing chef Frederic Guerin. Try his perfectly crispy, squid ink croquettes (B350) accompanied by saffron aioli, along with a bouillabaisse (B550) made with monkfish and cod. Eating as a group? Guerin’s food goes big on sharing portions like the hay baked chicken black truffle (B2,200 for two), a whole stuffed chicken with rice, or the spicy tomato linguine (B320) that doesn’t compromise on spiciness. Save some room for the zucchini cake with creamy olive oil (B290) to happily end the meal. O.P. Garden, Charoenkrung Soi 36, 02-238-6400. Open daily 4:30-11pm

Season’s Greetings
Congratulations, it’s been three weeks since that brutal New Year hangover. Celebrate by throwing a house party. Dutch beer brand Heineken has partnered with Greyhound cafe to deliver food and beer straight to your door with the Star Delivery Service. The price starts at B6,500 for 20 liters (or 75 cans), while it’s B8,900 for 30 liters, or B10,500 for 30 liters—surely enough for a party of about 15 people. Munch on French pate with bread, fried chicken wings, spicy salmon salad and stir-fried rice with gourami and sweet basil. Delivery’s available daily from 10am-10pm (last order 7pm) through Line: @stardelivery or by calling 080-584-5842
The bakery known for topping up the counter displays of cafes from Casa Lapin to Toby’s, Yellow Spoon Pastry has now moved from its tiny house into a bigger home down a hidden Ekkamai alley. Homey creations like the famous favorite tangy lemon tart (B150), light yet stiff mascapone chocolate pie (B150), yogurt creme brulee with crumble (B180) and bite-sized canele (B400/15 pcs) are available both to eat in or takeaway with no minimum order. Wash it down with slow-pressed fruity concoctions like Yellow (B140), a mix of guava, passion fruit and Chinese pear, or the banana strawberry smoothie (B140). 379/15 Ekkamai Rd., 085-482-2842. Open daily 10am-8pm
The Michelin-starred dinners at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon just became more affordable. Hot off receiving one star from Bangkok’s first Michelin guide, the famously fastidious French restaurant has launched a new four-course, seasonal menu that’s a full B1,150 shy of the degustation menu’s price of entry. At B3,850 (lunch and dinner), you get the full treatment: a menu that skips from foie gras, port and parmesan foam, to the Robuchon classic of poached egg with black truffle on toasted rice, to roasted sea bass on artichoke emulsion before ending on dessert, coffee and petits fours. That’s for fall, at least. The restaurant will soon be moving onto its winter menu. Pair each course with wine for B1,950. 5/F, MahaNakhon Cube, Naradhiwas Rd., 02-001-0698. If you’ve been itching to try your first omakase dinner, this is as safe a bet as any. 3/F, Atrium Zone. CentralWorld

ICE CREAM
Melting Moments Who does the best coconut ice cream in Bangkok? We put the top names to a blind taste test. By BK Staff
Nuttaporn Ice Cream
RUNNER UP
The refreshing, clear flavor and tart finish evoke sorbet or granita, but come at the expense of a creamy texture. Verdict: Coconut ice cream for the guilt-ridden. Price: B220/eight scoops 94 Phraeng Phuthon Rd., Phra Nakorn, 089-8265752. Open Mon-Sat 9am-4pm
Phai Tong The favorite ice cream of Bangkok’s street corners tastes like milk powder riddled with condensed milk. Verdict: Not worth chasing down the cart. Price: B240/2.2 kg
The Local Canteen
Jing Jing The silky texture goes BK PICK! well with a smoky, roasted-coconut fragrance and the full flavor of a ripe coconut. Verdict: We can eat this every day. Price: B50/scoop 154 Charoenkrung Soi 14, 081-974-1929
YUCK!
Candy-sweet and artificial, like sipping from a can of Carnation. Verdict: This is not coconut ice cream. Price: B45/cup Narathiwas Soi 3. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-3pm, 5:30-9pm. BTS Chong Nonsi
Mahachai Smooth and creamy, but without character and closer to vanilla than coconut. Verdict: Its rightful place is a Bangkok food court. Price: B25/cup Lotus Supermarket, Rama 4 Rd., 087-072-0073
Charoen Nakorn Soi 56, 086-789-1817. Open daily 6am-7pm
Ete The starkly white color conjures up toothpaste, while the fake sweetness does little to spruce up the hard chunks of coconut. Melts rapidly. Verdict: Its chemical color says stay away. Price: B55/scoop 7-Eleven citywide
Thiparot A little too rich on the tongue and the orange tinge is off-putting, but the bits of jackfruit and lod chong add good variety. Verdict: Almost there. Price: B80/box Krungthep-Nonthaburi Soi 2, 02-585-0415
SANE Khaosan’s newest cafe does bite-sized desserts with traditional Thai touches; think familiar egg-yolk sweets like thong ake (B70/set) and saneh jaan (B70/set). Do also try the rare-to-find bulan dun mek (B50/set)—a chewy steamed rice flour dumpling with butterfly pea and a drop of egg custard. Dessert workshops run every Tue, Thu, Sat and Sun, too. 99 Tanao Rd., 063-541-4964. Open Tue-Sun 11am-7:30pm
PEACE ORIENTAL TEAHOUSE After leaving its first house in Ekkamai, this zen-like teahouse has settled down at King Power on Soi Rangnam to whip up the finest tea in town. In addition, their charcoal-cased hojicha ice cream (B285/ scoop) is worth licking the plate. G/F, King Power, Soi Rangnam, 063-6370521. Open Mon-Fri 8am-9pm, Sat-Sun 10am-9pm. BTS Victory Monument

Fowlmouth is the meaty new player at The Commons thanks to mouth-breakingly spicy, oversized chicken burgers. But it has stiff competition on the way from Birds, Chong Nonsi’s roast-chicken specialist, which will also open at The Commons on M/F. Let the poultry battle commence.
Silom’s new Mediterranean spot Via Maris is awesome: simple, produce-first food, happy service, charming details. Which is why we don’t understand why it so often looks empty. Show them some love and safe yourself some cash with the B290 two-course lunch set. Bargain!
When Soi Lang Suan’s Beer Bridge launched in 2014 it was like a throwback to the fusion pizza and wasabi tatare bad old days. Now it’s rolling out a new menu with a new chef and promises things are a lot better. Watch this space!

Khao
Renowned Thai chef Vichit Mukura unveils a bigger, better restaurant.
The buzz: Chef Vichit Mukura, who headed the Mandarin Oriental’s Sala Rim Naam for 28 years, has moved his former chef's-table restaurant, Khao, into a more accommodating setting in Ekkamai for a la carte dining. The decor: Taking its cues from a traditional rice storehouse, Khao lets blond wood and natural light set the tone. Windows look out onto walls of greenery and there’s a garden growing herbs and Thai chilies for use in the dishes. There's still a chef's table, which sits in its own room with an open kitchen to put you closer to the action. The food: Book several weeks in advance for the chef’s table experience (B4,900/person, minimum of four) or dive

headlong into the a la carte menu spotlighting traditional dishes that use fresh ingredients right out of Vichit’s favorite market: Or Tor Kor. The stir-fried catfish (B320) is fluffy, crunchy and has a finishing kick of salted egg. The tamarind chili paste (B280) comes with a big plate of vegetables and a gooey boiled egg to ease the gentle burn of the chili. The pomelo and prawns salad (B360) walks the line between sweet and sour, as does the spicy grilled beef salad with grapes (B420). The poh taek (B360), a holy basil-laced seafood soup, is rich with umami flavors. Cool your tongue on a plate of traditional desserts (B280) composed of steamed flour bites and coconut pudding with mixed fruit.
The drinks: An array of healthy, earthy options, from the pandan and ginger juice (B60) to the refreshing roselle juice (B60) and the sweet corn tea (B80). The smoothies are similarly simple and rejuvenating, coming in flavors like tomato and pineapple (B100) and coconut and butterfly pea flower (B100). Otherwise pair your meal with wine, which starts at B230 for white or B320 for red wine by the glass. Why we’d come back: Warm, efficient service and the chance to experience a master class in Thai cooking from one of the cuisine’s best. Wanvida Jiralertpaiboon 15 Ekkamai Soi 10, 098-829-8878. NEW AND NOTED
Noodle Express Five years after bringing a smorgasbord of noodles to CentralWorld, Hung Sen (Saladaeng Soi 1, 02-233-7455) has just relocated to a two-story, blue shop-house in Sala Daeng. Though it doesn’t offer the same range it once did at CentralWorld, you’ll still find specialties ranging from the bright, tamarind-rich Sukhothai noodles with kurobuta pork (B120), to khao soi gai (B120), to the twist of spicy noodles with shredded salted egg (B95). They also specialize in somtam, with the vegetarian combo set (B199) consisting of papaya salad and fried mushroom, tofu steak, vermicelli, and vegetarian pad Thai (B120).
Fresh Groove Groove Riders’ Burin Boonvisut is the latest celebrity to open a restaurant. Lambic Eatery (The Grove, Hathairat Rd., 02-147-4988) sits in Laimai area’s new community mall, where its international offerings are served up
amid a friendly-yet-mature barn meets glasshouse space. Burin got a hand from chef Somkiat "Joke" Pairojmahakih (Seven Spoons) for the menu of pan-seared salmon with mango salsa (B380), mellow lobster bisque (B190) and pizza cooked on lychee wood. Music ranges from jazz in afternoons to big band at night and the occasional concert from Burin himself. Lambic also has a sister buffet shabu restaurant on the side called Shab Shab Shabu, which starts at B399 per head.
Dog’s Dinner You guessed it, The Running Dog (Sathorn Soi 10, 02-0776144) is a dog-friendly cafe in the cutest of Japanese style. Bring your four legged friend to run and play around in a garden while you eat lemon meringue tart (B150) or strawberry cheesecake (B150) with a cup of caramel macchiato (B120) blended from three different local beans. The Taste of Drinks to Come
Asia Today
ALEX CHOU, DISTILLER AND CO-CREATOR OF GRANDMA JINN AND LAMAI
“Gin is like craft beer… As long as beer has malt and hops, and gin has juniper, an alcohol maker can include whatever additional flavors they desire. In Thailand, the distillers will be able to introduce more brands and varieties of gin because it can be snuck under lao khao.”
How 2018 is reshaping the cocktails we drink in Bangkok. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

WORAPAT “TY” PORNPRASERTSOM, BRAND MANAGER AT BANGKOK SODA
Ku Bar
“People have been gaining more knowledge about mixers. There have been more choices of tonic in the past 2-3 years, thus no surprises people are now pickier about their tonic. Restaurants and bars also look for new mixers to create a different eperience for their customers.”
Eat Me
Gin as the new craft beer
More and better rum
Step aside, craft beer craze. 2018 is looking to be the year of gin, which ranks among its new champions Just A Drink Maybe (with a gin collection at 120 labels and climbing), Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park new rooftop spot, A Bar, and another branch of Iron Balls Bar in Phrom Phong (cozying up to neighbors Sing Sing Theater and Quince). Brace yourselves for an onset of juniper-tinged cocktails.
Rum and Thailand go way back. The mojito, arguably this country’s most popular cocktail (followed, probably, by the Long Island Iced Tea), is rum based. Thai craft rums like Malai, Chalong Bay and Issan are infiltrating drink menus long dominated by foreign rums. On top of this long history is a newfound love carried forward by rum-specialist bars like Tropic City and Asia Today.
Quality tonic
Eco-conscious owners
Gone are the days when we ordered a G&T and asked the bartender only, “What gin do you use?” We’ve wizened up, realizing that Schweppes is a sure route to ruining even the hardiest gin. The new question is, “What tonic do you use?” Here we give thanks to Bangkok Soda (available at 1881 by Water Library, Issaya Siamese Club and Namsaah Bottling Trust) for introducing to the local market craft soda made with real fruit and fresh ingredients. Their Siamese Tonic acquires its bitter finish not from quinine (originally employed for its malaria-fighting qualities), but from a natural mix of lemongrass, pomelo peel and kaffir lime leaf. In imported-product news, San Pellegrino also just brought to Bangkok its light, Italian tonic.
Local ingredients The local sourcing trend is finally catching on among bartenders. If Thai cuisine’s variety of flavors is any indication, we’re in for a world of unique combinations based on local ingredients. Recently opened Asia Today and The 88 are rigorously devoted to showcasing Thai ingredients, while over at Eat Me and Ku Bar, they have been whipping up drinks using local ingredients for a while.

Niks Anuman-Rajadhon (Teens of Thailand, Asia Today) showed up to our BAD Awards back in November in a T-shirt that read, “Fuck plastic straws.” Well, he’s not alone. Broccoli Revolution replaced its plastic straws with morning glory stems, and Old Town's Seven Spoons and Hazel’s underwent their own sustainable conversions, employing a variety of eco-friendly plastic substitutes: bamboo, Pyrex glass and stainless steel. Meanwhile, Mad Moa has been serving up its cocktails with lemongrass straws. We expect to see other venues follow suit.
Hotel rooftop bars Park Hyatt kicked off 2018 with a grand opening of its long-awaited, swanky rooftop bar above Penthouse Bar + Grill. Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park’s new gin bar, A Bar, also occupies a rooftop. Cloud 47 was reincarnated in Cloud 9, Hyatt Place hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 24 also comes with Aire Bar on their rooftop and the soon-to-open Waldorf Astoria in Ratchadamri is planning several bars for later this year.

“Bartenders are learning more about the stuff we are using. The questions that I have are, is it safe to consume products from supermarkets? Why do we have so few choices? Why are we paying a lot of money for stuff that has to travel across the globe and is not even fresh? Why are the local cuisine ingredients disappearing as the country becomes more modern? This is nothing new in the food business. We have farm to table, but you never hear about farm to bar.”

“Rum is already extremely popular in Thailand without people realizing it. Sangsom is a rum. Sugar cane [the base for making rum] is native to Southeast Asia. With more aged rums being brought into Thailand as fine as aged whiskeys, bars are making rum their focus, and craft Thai rums are finally getting the spotlight.”

Born in the UK , Burger & Lobster became an international sensation by offering just two things: lobsters (your choice of grilled, steamed or in a bun) and burgers. Back in its home country it has been lauded for offering amazing value for money. In Bangkok, the swanky venue with its plush red leather seats, brass-and-wood tables and packing crate art installations also manages to undercut the competition. A whole, 700-gram lobster here with fries and Burger & Lobster’s delicious lemon-and-garlic butter will cost you B1,500, which is cheaper than both Crab & Claw and The Oyster Bar. It’s also tasty: taken live from the tank to the steamer and cooked to juicy, simple perfection. But a good, moderate-

The brainchild of chef Garima Arora offers a trans-Asian culinary journey. When it opened in Mar 2017, Gaa made headlines as a natural sibling to Gaggan for obvious reasons, not least because Arora was previously souschef there. Here, too, you’ll encounter high-wire techniques and an approach to food that verges on scientific. And yet there are occasions in your meal (a tasting menu of either 10 or 14 courses, B2,000 -2,600) when Gaa feels downright rustic. Occupying a bright-yellow shop-house opposite Gaggan’s pristine white house, Gaa delivers a younger, more playful vibe. This carries over to dishes that apply the finesse and detail of fine dining to street food. An early appetizer pairs “duckoyagi” (a fried flour ball akin to Japanese takoyaki stuffed with duck vindaloo) with six superb varieties of pickles cherry-picked from across Asia: Vietnamese carrot and daikon, Indian mango chutney, Chinese bok choy. Later, in the fish kanom la, Arora reinvents a traditional southern Thai crepe floss dessert as a savory taco, in which succulent poached grouper,
ly cheap imported lobster is really the only reason we’d go here. The 6oz original burger is unfathomably pricey (B750) and not very good—the meat grainy and tasteless, the bun dry, the sauce almost non-existent. The fries are another case of “could’ve done better”: a pallid joke compared to the ones at Crab & Claw. For dessert, steer clear of the sticky toffee pudding (B250), which on our last visit had a tough and chewy center—definitely not worth the calories, as they’d say on that other British institution, Bake Off. Once you factor in a bottle of OK Chardonnay at B1,390 (B290/glass) or a couple of cocktails at B340-420 each, dinner at Burger & Lobster becomes expensive—budget B2,500 a head if you plan on enjoying yourselves (which, if you get the burger, you won’t). But that’s not putting people off. While the Facebook cries of twohour-long waits are a thing of the past (you can now call and book tables, while service in the dining room is precise and friendly), it still hosts a packed crowd most nights. We can think of two reasons why—the lure of a cheapish lobster, and the fact that this brand still carries lots of Instagram kudos—neither of which are high on our dinner priorities.
pungent mustard seed and sweet caramelized milk skin play off with incredible results. For all the cross-cultural references, Gaa doesn’t feel contrived. Subtly-flavored dishes revel in minor twists, as in the shards of frozen chicken liver perked up with juicy longan berries, or the sweet-spicy combination of creamy egg fruit, pomelo and crayfish atop Indian flatbread. All the while, the local produce shines, notably in the Royal Projects sturgeon caviar that tops off a deliciously gooey quail’s egg. In such delicate company, the main of grilled pork ribs, topped with chopped shallots, spring onions and pomegranate seeds, feels like a slightly stodgy misstep with its tamarind marinade adding a discomfiting sharpness. Another street-food homage, this time to the Indian staple of keema pau , gets things back on track, stuffing juicy minced lamb into fluffy, freshly baked bread—a definite down-to-earth highpoint. Dessert, too, straddles the line between comforting and intriguing. A betel leaf half coated with chocolate, half sprinkled with fennel powder is a curiosity, but we’d drop by just for a red-rice cone of burnt coconut sugar soft serve with pork floss. While Gaa’s set menu prices are hardly unheardof, do note you’ll pay B500 for a cockt a i l l i ke t h e t a r t , p e r fe c t l y O K , Snakefruit Sling (Campari, Tanqueray gin, orange sake and snakefruit kombucha), and at least that for a glass of wine. That’s no reason not to visit, of course. Creative yet grounded, Gaa is one of the most exciting tickets in town.
