ast year, the Top Tables guide doubled the size of its panel to a couple dozen foodies, chefs, restaurateurs and industry veterans. This year we had over 50—and we solemnly vow to stop expanding. But having a bigger panel does have its perks when you’re reviewing some 200 restaurants to decide which ones should be in the Top Tables Official Selection, and which ones are in the Top 30. It’s a huge undertaking and our panelists have our utmost gratitude for plowing through our not-so-shortlist in an effort to bring you only the best places in town. Any list is going to be controversial. Vehemently disagreeing with them is certainly half the fun. But with the breadth of this year’s panel, we’ve never felt so confident about our humble guide, which began in 2007 as a cover story in BK Magazine. The panel is completely independent from our kind advertisers, we can vouch for how often they eat out in the city’s top spots, and we feel they’ve done a stellar job of selecting the city’s very best restaurants in Bangkok. What’s a Top Table anyway? The definition keeps changing, as trends like industrial decor, communal tables, barbecue, comfort food and fast food continue to sweep the scene, redefining what a memorable dining experience should be. While Top Tables still steers clear of street food (which would deserve its own guide anyway), our idea of a superlative restaurant is increasingly relaxed. Case in point: The Smokin’ Pug, number 25 in our Top 30. It looks like a dive bar, but who could argue with those ribs? Robuchon is still on top, though. There’s just no denying that places like L’Atelier, Gaggan, Nahm and Ginza Sushi Ichi continue to set the standards for food as a form of high art. Three out of four of those venues are aiming for tradition, while Gaggan fully embraces modern techniques. But their obsessive pursuit of perfection unites them. These are the venues where one can’t help but wonder, “Isn’t it crazy, that food at this level exists at all?” Not that you have to eat your way through Top Tables starting from the top. Pick a page at random and book your table. We’re positive you won’t be disappointed.

1 L’Atelier de Joel FRENCH

Robuchon

5/F, Mahanakorn Cube, 96 Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Rd., 02-001-0698. BTS Chong Nonsi. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6:30-10:30pm. E H F BBBB The chef: Olivier Limousin heads Robuchon’s Bangkok atelier. He has worked for the brand for 12 years now, both in Paris and London, personally accounting for four of the stars in Joel Robuchon’s total of 25 across 20 restaurants. The French national’s other credits include guest judging the UK’s MasterChef semifinals and gaining a Michelin star at Paris’s Le Bellecour. Then there’s the man behind the restaurant, Joel Robuchon, possibly the most important French chef since Escoffier codified haute cuisine, and a recipient of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France title at 31—the highest honor for an artisan. The place: Taking the Top Tables top spot for its second year running, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon is so much more than a fine-dining chain restaurant. The space evokes the feel of an upscale sushi bar while serving up impeccablyexecuted versions of French favorites. The Bangkok branch offers a red and black-accented dining space where guests get the chance to see their food being made, while the menu is studded by L’Atelier standouts like free-range quail stuffed with foie gras and potato puree.

2 Gaggan INDIAN

68/1 Lang Suan Rd., 02-652-1700. BTS Ratchadamri. Open daily 6pm-midnight. H F BBBB The chef: Gaggan Anand is as much a part of eating at Gaggan as the bite-size flavor jolts that come pouring out of his kitchen course after course. Equipped with lessons learned at El Bulli, the Spanish birthplace of what’s now known as molecular gastronomy, Gaggan drew on his Kolkata heritage to create a cuisine entirely of his own in which memories of India merge with flavors and ingredients drawn from a growing love of Japan and other food cultures. The place: Each night, in a classically restored house on Langsuan Road, the chef’s team offers a tasting menu where diners’ expectations of Indian food are first thrown overboard and then blown out of the water by Gaggan’s El Bulli-influenced creativity. From the simplest fish curry with naan bread to cocktails made from lamb consomme, the restaurant delights and challenges in equal measure. Gaggan is now in such demand that even David Beckham popped in for dinner at the end of last year—the rest of us can be assured of at least a one-week wait for a table.

3 Nahm THAI

Metropolitan by COMO, 27 Sathorn Rd., 02-6253388. Open daily 7-10:30pm; Mon-Fri noon-2pm. E H F BBBB The chef: David Thompson might be the name people know around the world (he just won a lifetime achievement award at Asia’s 50 Best 2016), but head chef Prin Polsuk is the one who has ensured Thompson’s Bangkok flagship has remained right at the top of its game. Ask the people who’ve worked for him and they’ll tell you Prin is fanatical about three things: authenticity, balance of flavor, and using the right ingredients at the right time of year. The place: Still considered the “must-go” destination of every aspiring foodie in Bangkok, Nahm does Thai food made with the very finest ingredients using the most traditional methods. The most popular offerings at Nahm are the set menus, which usually feature dishes like blue swimmer crab curry with fermented rice noodles and the salad of fresh river prawns and Asian pennywort served in communal, Thai-style fashion.

4 Ginza Sushi Ichi JAPANESE

LG/F, Erawan Bangkok, 494 Ploen Chit Rd., 02-2500014. BTS Chit Lom. Open Tue-Sun noon-2:30pm; Tue-Sat 6-11pm; Sun 6-10pm. H F BBBB The chef: The executive chef here is the same man who led Tokyo’s original Sushi Ichi to a Michelin star. Masakazu Ishibashi was born into a family of sushi chefs before traveling to southern California where he refined his taste for dramatic, colorful presentation. His restaurant’s arrival in Bangkok sparked a shake-up on the city’s sushi scene that redefined what diners expect from a top-tier Japanese restaurant. The place: Bangkok’s version of the acclaimed Ginza Sushi Ichi in Tokyo came to town promising an unmatched dedication to freshness—and it has delivered. Each day the restaurant flies ingredients in from Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, even closing when Japanese holidays will delay the next shipment of fresh goods. Sushi lovers, grab a seat and get your Instagram ready for fresh-from-market omakase, or order a la carte and marvel as the chefs prepare each course in front of you.

Chamchuri

2/F, Chamchuri Square, Rama 4 Rd., 061-852-5411, 095-085-7777. MRT Sam Yan. Open daily 11:30am2pm, 6-10pm. E F BBBB The chef: German chef Mirco Keller cut his teeth in Berlin’s Michelin-lauded kitchens of Tim Raue (two stars), Uma (formerly one star, now closed) and Restaurant 44 (formerly one star). He puts his classical European training to inventive new purposes at Water Library, not shying away from his Asian surroundings both in terms of terroir and seasonality. The place: At the flagship restaurant of Water Library’s ever-expanding empire, Keller dishes out contemporary fine dining in a venue more reminiscent of a five-star hotel than a shopping mall on the outskirts of Chinatown. While there are nice a la carte choices like seared Canadian scallop with green apple and Bresse chicken in a barbecue sauce, the tasting menus are especially well-regarded, with diners able to choose between “classic” and “seasonal” options.

6 Appia ITALIAN

20/4 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-261-2056. Open Tue-Sun 6:30-11pm; Sun 11:30am-2:30pm. H F BBB-BBBB The chef: Paolo Vitaletti became one of the city’s favorite chefs in record timing when he broke the fussily plated norm of Bangkok’s hotel-dominated Italian food scene and drove it down the simple, rustic, home-style path of Appia. In the years since, he’s perhaps become better associated with the pizzeria sensation that is Peppina (now officially certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana), but still claims head chef rights to the menu of fuss-free pastas, rotisserie meats and unctuous stews at Appia. The place: This permanent staple in the Top Tables Top 10 once again makes an appearance thanks to its deliciously juicy rotisserie chicken, flavorful porchetta with apple sauce and some of the best homemade pasta in the city. Also drawing in diners are the efficient, friendly service; discerning wine list; rich desserts and charmingly rustic decor, which combines wood paneling with turn-ofthe-century bistro chairs.

7 Eat Me

INTERNATIONAL

1/6 Soi Phiphat 2, Convent Rd., 02-238-0931. BTS Sala Daeng. Open daily 3pm-1am. H E BBBB The chef: The kitchens of Daniel and Aquavit in New York provided Culinary Institute of America-graduate Tim Butler with the foundation he needed to go it alone with his own Bangkok catering company. Heading the kitchen at Eat Me since 2010, he’s been responsible for ensuring the restaurant stalwart has never slipped from the minds of discerning diners thanks to his truly globallyinspired recipes that manage to still keep flavors comforting. The place: Ranked 23rd among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants this year, this romantic and minimalist restaurant shows creativity both on the walls (it doubles as an art gallery) and on the plate in Butler’s bold and memorable creations. Dishes like the spicy wagyu tartare with a fried quail egg come packed with Northeastern Thai flair, while desserts such as the goat cheese ice cream with red wine poached pear and honeycomb are an equal delight.

8 Paste THAI

3/F, Gaysorn Plaza, 999 Ploen Chit Rd., 02-656-1003. BTS Chit Lom. Open daily noon-2pm, 6:30pm-midnight. F BBBB The chefs: The chefs behind Sukhumvit Soi 49’s Paste (now closed), Bongkoch Satongun and Jason Bailey, have relocated to their follow-up Gaysorn branch turning out recipes drawn from the aristocratic Sanitwong family, descendants of Rama II. While the setting for Bongkoch and Bailey’s food has grown more elaborate, the chefs have maintained the incredibly diverse, fresh flavors that always made Paste a hit with those in the know. The place: As becoming as Paste’s wonderful flavors and elegant, muted dining room is the plating: relaxed and effortless despite a painterly attention to color. But these are so much more than pretty plates of food. The vibrant multitude of ingredients makes for complex, lively dishes in which every flavor and texture somehow remains distinct. Just as importantly, you can really feel husband and wife chefs Bailey and Satongun’s creativity and personality in their food, which is not always the case at other traditionalist kitchens.

9 Bo.lan THAI

24 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 02-260-2961-2. BTS Thong Lo. Open Tue-Sun 6-10:30pm; Sat-Sun noon-2:30pm. E F H BBBB The chefs: When chef couple Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones opened Bo.lan in 2009, they gave Bangkok its first devotedly authentic fine-dining Thai restaurant. Today, the pair not only continue to drive Bo.lan down increasingly uncompromising roots, waving goodbye to the a la carte menu altogether last year, but they’ve also expanded with the street-food-and-cocktails focused Err, near the river. The place: Featuring fine Thai cuisine made using traditional methods and the best ingredients, Bo.lan—an amalgam of the chef-couple’s names—has made a splash in the global dining world with its aromatic curries, beautifully plated salads and artfully conceived menu. Adding to the allure is a striking dining room, set in an old house replete with tropical garden and close to hipster thoroughfare Soi Thonglor. Try the “Bo.lan balance,” a menu that changes along with the seasons.

10 Le Du THAI

399/3 Silom Soi 7, 092-919-9969. BTS Chong Nonsi. Open Mon-Sat 6-11pm. F BBB-BBBB The chef: Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn, 29, was the toast of Bangkok’s restaurant scene in 2015 when Le Du scooped third place in Top Tables in its opening year. Since then the Culinary Institute of America graduate has gone on to open three more restaurants: Taper (brunch staples and Asian breakfast dishes); Baan (home-style Thai dishes); and Baagadin (deconstructed Thai street food). But Le Du and its contemporary reconstructions of Thai classics remain where the chef’s heart lies. The place: Once in a while, a Thai restaurant comes around that manages to fuse classic Thai food with modern Western techniques in a manner that doesn’t feel heavy-handed or forced. Such is the case with Le Du, where Thitid turns out an unerringly contemporary menu that changes seasonally. The wine is an equal highlight (Thitid is himself a certified sommelier) thanks to bottles sourced solely from organic or boutique outfits.

F BBBBBB Chef Man has made a big impression on the local dining scene by serving up some of the best dim sum in the city, along with dishes that add interesting Thai touches (and require reservations days in advance). The Peking duck comes with slices of ripe mango, and the lava buns are arguably the best in town. 13 Sensi ITALIAN

Narathiwat Ratchanakarin 17 Yaek 5, 02-117-1618. Open MonSat 6pm-midnight. H F BBBB This restaurant may seem off the beaten track, but the menu—designed by Chef Christian Martena who previously worked at Opus—promises approachable innovation in a relatively unassuming form. The a la carte menu (which offers generous portions) does twists on “grandma’s memories” such as a homemade strozzapreti served with Canadian lobster, while the degustation menu (highly recommended) changes on a weekly basis.

14 Peppina ITALIAN

27/1 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-119-7677. Open daily 11am-3pm, 6:30-11pm. F BB-BBBB The original branch of this rapidly expanding pizzeria aims high: it wants to be the purveyor of the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in Bangkok, and recently proved itself when it received official certification from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana in Naples. As a result, a massive pizza oven dominates the warmyet-industrial-style dining room, which boasts an open kitchen and its very own Neapolitan baker. Also popular with diners are the pasta dishes, fresh salads and excellent beef steak.

44/9-10 Thonglor Soi 13, 02-185-2670. Open Tue-Sat 5:30pm1am; Sun 11am-3pm . F BBB-BBBB “New American” can be a slippery concept, but Culinary Institute of America-trained chef Rangsima Bunyasaranand manages to send out a menu’s worth of dishes bristling with brio. Favorites include the jerk chicken hearts with pineapple salsa, homemade charcuterie plate with pork rillette and head cheese terrine, and seared duck breast. A creative cocktail menu awaits, too.

20 Supanniga Eating Room THAI

Thai. 160/11 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-714-7508. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30-11pm. H BB-BBB Based on old-style dishes drawn from the owner’s grandmother’s recipes, Supanniga (named after a flower that flourishes in the Northeast) specializes in food hailing from the family hometown of Trat, on the eastern seaboard, and the Isaan city of Khon Kaen, where the family now lives. Much-vaunted dishes here include the moo cha muang (pork with Guttiferae tree leaves) and the nam prik kai poo (chili dip with crab eggs).

While the original Bangkok branch of Japanese chain Sushi Cyu can seem dated and unwelcoming, the dining area remains packed with customers queuing up for a taste of good yakiniku (Japanese beef barbecue). The yakiniku section is augmented by a sushi counter, which is considered the quieter area of the two.

22 Arno’s STEAK | NEW

2080/2 Narathiwas Soi 20, 02-678-8340. Open Tue-Wed 6-11pm; Fri-Sun 11:30am-10pm. F BBB-BBBB Serving what some Bangkokians claim is the “best steak in town,” Arno’s manages to combine a butchery with a restaurant by offering basically any cut you would find at your local market, plus the opportunity for them to cook and serve it to you at no extra cost. Just pick your cut at the counter, tell the chef how you want it prepared, and then take a seat. French butcher/chef Arnaud Carre—aided by his partners Supanit Chaiyawiwat and Siripong Luengvarinkul—offers beef that is dry-aged for at least 45 days, plus lamb, pork, chicken and some seafood.

H BBB While Smokin’ Pug may specialize in the blue-collar low-and-slow style of smoked barbecue, the restaurant—set up by the American couple behind the Lazy Pug in Chengdu, China—bears enough nice touches (homemade salad dressing, well-made cocktails) to set it apart from other barbecue pretenders. This grand old villa reborn as a cocktails and Italian grill restaurant boasts some of Europe’s most prized meats, including Galician beef and prosciutto and pork neck from the Ca’ Lumaco Estate (between Modena and Bologna). Overall, there’s a lightness of touch here that makes this much more than just an ordinary steak house.

This restaurant manages to combine two restaurant concepts in one. By day, Osito plays the mild-mannered Clark Kent type with its deli sandwiches and salads, while come nighttime it turns on the super powers with its Spanish-influenced menu of tapas and paella, in homage to Californian chef/owner Billy Bautista’s heritage. The seafood paella and dry-aged tomahawk steak are highly recommended.

Take up a seat at the sushi bar to watch the chefs work their magic.

E H F BBBB Zanotti was among the first restaurants in Bangkok to elevate Italian cuisine to the realm of fine dining. Now considered part of the city’s dining “old guard,” Zanotti still whips up authentic Piedmontese dishes inspired by its founding chef, Gianmaria Zanotti, as well as a great selection of pastas and the dependably tasty Florentine-style beef steak. There’s also an impressive wine list.

32/F, Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, 189 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-126-9999. BTS Nana. Open daily 5pm-1am.

The menu focuses on Pacific coastal cuisine like the fresh and simple scallop carpaccio with corn and avocado salsa as well as Nikkei (Peruvian-Japanese fusion) dishes like grilled Maine lobster with “ramen gnocchi” and miso tea. The signature drinks also fit the theme well, like the rum-based Catch 22. Added bonus: the panoramic views of Lumphini Park from the Dusit’s top floor.

Imagine a grand Parisian apartment, with parquet floors, rich burgundy wallpaper and lots of marble among some well chosen bric-a-brac. Every item is imported; the couches, black and white pictures of Parisian life, even the La Cornue stove in the open kitchen. Expect comforting and classical dishes, like black truffle ravioli or knife-cut wagyu beef tartare—all expertly presented. The 32nd-floor views of downtown Bangkok are impressive, too.

9/F, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-0036273. BTS Phrom Phong. Open Mon-Thu 10am-10pm; Fri-Sun 10am-11pm.

Avani Atrium, 1880 New Petchaburi Rd., 02-718-2023. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm.

This restaurant’s young owner, “Ice,” brings his grandparent’s recipes to the hip nightlife neighbourhood of Thonglor. Expect to taste Southern specialties like khua kling (stir-fried grain-fed 150-day Australian beef), pad liang gung siab (stir-fried Southern herbs with dried shrimps) and khao yam Khun Puu (herbs with rice and dipping sauce) in a relaxed setting.

This restaurant by Pomodoro group (Pomodoro, Gustuso, Amici, Common Room) is set in an elegantly-decorated dining room and serves food that’s equally good-looking. The risotto allo zafferano e fegato grasso not only comprises a risoto with saffron but is also topped with unctuous foie gras from France. Another must-try is the guancia di manzo: tender ox cheek marinated for hours and braised in red wine.

Since 1964, the New York-born chain has delivered modern Japanese flavors with a solid dose of American showmanship. Watch the teppanyaki chef slice, dice and sear prime cuts of beef right before you, or explore creative dishes like Rocky’s Mountain Sandwich Spicy Salmon (spicy salmon, tobiko, Japanese onion, kaiware, rayu sauce, spicy mayonnaise). The decor is ideally suited for large parties, which sit surrounding the performersslash-chefs.

This international buffet spans a wide range of cuisines, from Asian to European. Thai favorites include the river prawns with curry sauce, while comforting classics hop-scotch from Southern Europe (lasagne) to its Northernmost reaches (smoked salmon, rack of lamb with gravy sauce). The seafood corner includes scallops, New Zealand mussels, crab and more, while the desserts spread is packed with homemade cakes and a variety of ice cream flavors.

The Dining Room at The House on Sathorn 106 North Sathorn Rd., 02-344-4025. BTS Chong Nonsi. Open daily noon-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm.

Here, you get statement yellow chairs and impressionist paintings to go with your Ming vases and lazy Susans, making this one of the most contemporary and fun Cantonese dining rooms in town. The menu, meanwhile, drives a firm line down all the classics: glazed roast Peking duck, pan-fried cod fish with garlic and spring onion, suckling pig and plenty of dim sum. You’ll also find some powerful Sichuan favorites and a specialty herbal tea bar.

This elegant steakhouse with an industrial age decor, red banquettes and views of downtown Bangkok serves both its generous steaks and juicy burgers on slate framed in wood—a fittingly masculine gimmick. The Chop’s signature is a massive tomahawk (or cote de boeuf as the French call it) but they also take great pride in their Billionaire Burger, a decadent tower of wagyu beef, truffle seasoning and foie gras. For some proper beef and a standalone atmosphere, The Chop ticks all the right boxes.

Penny’s Balcony, Thonglor Soi 16, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-714-8723. Open daily 11:30am-2pm, 5:30pm-midnight.

2/F, Groove at CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 02-251-1230. BTS Siam. Open Sun-Thu 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat 11am-11pm.

B/F, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02261-0428. BTS Phrom Phong. Open daily 10am-10pm.

This Thonglor old-timer dishes out the kind of Bangkok-meets-Italy dining experience that sees comforting plates of pastas and boards of antipasti brought to share among friends over reliable bottles of red vino. Plentiful terrace seating in one of the area’s original pre-game spots means you can watch the Thonglor nightlife scene heat up as you tuck into your burrata with parma ham, black truffle ravioli and wagyu steak served Florentine style.

Supanniga Eating Room is widely considered one of the best restaurants in Bangkok for Thai home-style food, and this follow-up also does some pretty amazing dishes. The menu includes regional specialties from all over Thailand, like big, plump Ayutthaya river shrimps and a green curry fried rice with salted eggs from Chaiya, in Surat Thani. The atmosphere manages to belie the restaurant’s mall location with homey, roughly hewn wooden furniture and quaint ceramic tableware.

The team behind Minibar Royale, Supanniga and EAT also own this wall-towall blond wood cafe serving simple Thai dishes that stand in contrast to the mall’s more deluxe eateries. The food here takes influence from the Bangkok streets, adopting a tam sang concept that allows you to pick a protein and a carb then tell the kitchen how you want them cooked. Don’t miss the sea prawn pad Thai or the black sesame ice cream for dessert.

In what used to be an aristocratic home, this standalone outpost of the neighboring W Hotel has one of the most stunning dining rooms in town, artfully blending the building’s period details with considerate modern touches. Half of the restaurant’s 38 seats are at a long, wooden counter facing the kitchen, where the team turns out fusion dishes like “Hunting the Duck”, duck breast lying on splashes of red pomegranate sauce and burnt onion powder as gunpowder.

Chef couple Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones of Bo.lan (Top Tables No. 9, see page 22) went casual for this riverside cocktail and tapas bar, while keeping the emphasis firmly on quality produced from around the country. The menu spans a lot of crisp, fried, grilled, comforting, favorites like Isaan sausage, Chiang Rai sausage, a simple bowl of green mango macerated in fish sauce and chili powder, or braised mussels in a clay pot. The pla som (garlic- and jasmine-rice-cured ocean fish) knocks it out of the ballpark.

Opened in 1966, this venerable steakhouse still does things the old-fashioned way, with Caesar salads tossed table-side and steak tartares prepared on the trolley to your liking. The central cooking station, including the large charcoal grill, dishes out French classics (lobster bisque, onion soupe, flambéed crepes) and Australia’s very best beef: Stockyard wagyu, Great Southern and Riverina—plus fresh oysters and fish (Norwegian snow fish, Dover sole, salmon fillet).

Coming to Bangkok this July, this steakhouse promises to offer central Bangkok another option for high-end imported slabs of meat alongside all the classic dishes you’d expect from a New York restaurant of the old school. There’ll be jazz. There’ll be a bar lined with dark after-dinner spirits. There’ll be decor that invites you to loosen a couple of belt-notches and dig in.

The famous Indian franchise is now in Bangkok serving some 450 types of kababs (grilled meat or vegetables) as well as curries. Served both as set menus and all-you-can-eat, Indian chef Mahesh Thepa’s menu changes daily but sticks to the same herbs and spices used in the mother branch. Thanks to a large open kitchen, you’ll see the chefs busying themselves around the tandoor ovens.

Reliably affordable wine-and-dine chain Wine Connection positions this as its most upscale branch, dry-aging meat in its on-site cellar for at least one week. To accompany your US Angus, Australian or 500-day grain-fed Japanese Iwate wagyu beef, you’ll find side dishes like truffle French fries, potato gratin and classic sauces. Of course, it remains one of the cheapest places in town to get a glass of wine, too.

Having learned her art at Chicago’s Green Tea sushi bar, Karuna Sangaroon came back to Thailand and named her small but super friendly restaurant after her sushi master. In fact 80 percent of her sushi dishes come from the Green Tea menu, prepared with international ingredients and American twists. Try the crunchy sushi sandwich (spicy tuna and salmon sandwiched with crispy tempura flakes) or the crowd-pleasing Volcano (spicy baked scallop served in a shell).

Helmed by chef Stefano Merlo, The St. Regis Bangkok’s Italian restaurant serves up slow food and seasonal produce amid contemporary decor. Aside from lots of homemade pastas, highlights from the dinner menu also include the uovo asparagi e asiago (white and green asparagus, slow-cooked egg, asiago cheese foam) carpaccio di gamberi (red prawn carpaccio, prawn mayonnaise, orange gel) and fegatini di pollo (chicken liver pate on brioche bread, zibibbo wine gelatin, fresh leaves). Do visit the walk-in wine and chesee cellar, too.

New York comfort food takes center stage in this soon to open new restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 23. Expect barbecue, hearty salads and other dishes that beg for a good craft beer in an environment where families are welcome.

Medinii

Mexicano (formerly Senor Pico)

35/F, The Continent Hotel, 413 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-686-7000. BTS Asok.

The sleek Italian restaurant atop The Continent hotel has a lot going for it, not least the amazing city views. If you can’t get a table beside the floor-toceiling windows then try and grab one of the slouchy sofas for a langorous meal of pastas and other Italian classics—definitely a good choice if you plan to indulge in the daily free-flow pizza, wine and beer deal.

1/F, Rembrandt Hotel Bangkok, 19 Sukhumvit Soi 18, 02-261-7100. BTS Asok. Open daily 5pm-1am.

This Mexican restaurant has the seniority (first in town!), the live band and we-aim-to-please hotel service. While touches of Tex-Mex remain, the menu is now firmly “South of the border,” meaning Mexican classics (fajitas, espetadas, tacos) and a few South American additions like Peruvian-inspired ceviche salads. The terra-cotta and stone decor is a fittingly cozy backdrop for the regular live bands playing Latin sounds.

Madison G/F, Anantara Siam, 155 Ratchadamri Rd., 02-126-8866. BTS Ratchadamri. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm.

Tony Chi, the mastermind behind steakhouses which are half heavy and leathery, half bright and airy, worked his magic on Anantara Siam’s signature restaurant to create a meat-eater’s paradise that you want to lounge in forever. The extensive menu features imported beef from Australia and Japan, impeccable service, and a clientele who wear epaulets at their day jobs.

Not Just Another Cup 75/1, Sathorn Soi 10, 02-635-3464. BTS Chong Nonsi. Open daily 7am-7pm.

Taking on the brunch royalty of Sathorn Soi 10, this airy, two-story restaurant deals in a familiar combination of eggfocused dishes, prettily poured coffee and cold-pressed juices served in a daytime-friendly dining room. On the menu, guilty pleasure comfort food like pastas, sandwiches, salads and toasts sit alongside the occasional bowl of muesli or salad. Special mention goes to the Moroccan-style skillet of eggs in a richly spiced tomato sauce, served alongside some deliciously fluffy bread for dunking.

3/F, Maneeya Centre, Ploenchit Rd., 02252-5131. BTS Chit Lom. Open daily 11ammidnight.

This glamorous Thai restaurant specializes in elaborately reconstructed classic dishes like tom yam soup served through a vacuum coffee-maker, green curry with spherified pearls of coconut milk, and krapao-nua (a street-food staple of beef stir-fried with holy basil) made using the finest Kagoshima wagyu from Japan. The dining room is also something to behold, with its real gold leaf-coated stairwell and custom Ramakien wallpaper.

The restaurant on the top of Sofitel So hotel recently got a new head chef, Joost Bijster, who’s unveiled a menu that eschews fine dining in favor of more casual, shareable bites. You can still expect delicate plating in dishes like burrato di bufala with heirloom tomatoes, pan-seared Tasmanian salmon with white asparagus, leek, fennel and hollandaise sauce, and Iberico belotta with fresh melon, as well as some top new cocktails in the adjoining rooftop bar.

The people behind Pirate Chambre are the same bunch who established Fallabella as hi-so clubbers’ favorite player. At this hidden away restaurant and bar, the focus shifts from bold Thai and Isaan tastes during the day (11am-3pm) like somtam platters and grilled half chickens, to Western fare by night (5pm onwards), including saffron risotto prosciutto and Le Banyan pressed duck for two. You’ll find some pretty ambitious cocktail creations at the bar, too.

Millennium Hilton Bangkok, 123 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-442-2000. Open daily 6pm-midnight.

55/F, Centara Grand at CentralWorld, 999/99 Rama 1 Rd., 02-100-6255. Siam. Open daily 6-11:30pm.

Sweeping river views make this one of Bangkok’s most enchanting spots to tuck into a prime cut of meat. Alongside all the imported beef, the extensive wine list and the classic cocktails, the seafood options are equally well thought-out, such as the live lobsters which you can enjoy steamed, grilled or baked. The chocolate souffle may take 20 minutes to bake, but it’s Prime’s signature finale.

Known as one of the best Indian places in town, Rang Mahal serves royal Indian cuisine amid decor fit for a maharaja (sculpted columns, upholstered seats, portraits of Mughal emperors). If the lengthy offerings require too much effort to peruse, opt for a set menu, but do make sure it includes the mouthwatering butter chicken. A traditional Indian band keeps you entertained throughout the meal just in case the 26-story views aren’t enough.

The 55th-floor view from Centara’s rooftop puts this bar in the same league as the city’s highest flying 5-star hotel restaurants. Al fresco dining and drinking takes place under a swooping, red-lit arch, while chef Hugo Coudurier’s seasonal menus spotlight classic, rich steak dishes. Don’t miss the truffle-infused wagyu beef tenderloin Rossini—a menu staple and proven crowd-pleaser.

Rose Hotel, 118 Surawong Rd., 02-2668268/-72. BTS Sala Daeng. Open daily noon-11pm.

The bird’s-eye-view of Bangkok’s skyline is sure to impress, as is the discreet, dimly-lit dining room on the 31st floor of the hotel. Bigger parties can book the glass-encased private room, which nestles next to the open cooking station. For a place known as a steakhouse, the menu is that of a gourmet, modern French restaurant, but does include a vast selection of seafood and beef: Japanese wagyu Ohmi beef, Australian grain-fed 400 days and more.

This flagship restaurant of the Sheraton Grande is a classic Italian finedining experience. The decor is unabashadely themed to ressemble a Tuscan villa complete with a gigantic fireplace, wood-beamed ceiling and large frescos of patrician families. Beyond antipasti and pasta, they whip up recipes such as San Daniele hamwrapped black cod with potato fondue and Taggiasche olives, alongside classics like asparagus risotto with black truffle.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, 259 Sukhumvit Soi 19, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-2078000. Open daily 6am-11pm.

5/5 Sala Daeng Rd., 02-632-4499. MRT Silom. Open daily 11am-2pm, 4:30-10pm.

The clean, crisp, cream and green decor evokes a bamboo forest, while the greenery lining the big bay windows continues the natural theme. The open kitchen and live cooking stations lend a fuss-free and an interactive vibe, as they whip up favorites ranging from pizza to pasta to wok-fried Asian noodles. For something heartier, feast on the carvery’s roasts and grills or indulge in a feast of Japanese bites at the sashimi and sushi counter.

Set in a former warehouse, Smith is decked out in an edgy industrial theme, with bare cement walls lined with tools and furniture made of roughly hewn wood. The venue also features a garden with a barbecue area. Chef Peter Pitakwong focuses on locallysourced, fresh ingredients, meats, fish and comfort dishes. Among the musttry dishes are slow-roasted lamb ribs with coffee spice rub and the tuna with braised pig’s tail.

Tucked down a small alley off Surawong, this century-old house showcases a beautiful collection of antiques within its teak structure. Paying homage to its original owner, who was a herbal medicine practitioner, the menu incorporates strong herbs and spices such as green peppercorn, wild ginger, galangal and turmeric. The presentation, too, is incredibly refined: carefully-crafted skewers, bite-size treats atop fresh petals and delicately carved vegetables.

Not far from the bustle of Silom Road, the restaurant brings typical street food into a modern shop-house setting. The menu focuses on somtam and other classic Northeastern dishes. Not as sweet as Bangkokians usually like their somtam, the flavors here are particularly authentic. Do try the pork skewers marinated in coconut milk and the wonderful deep-fried minced pork balls. Their martinis are also a highlight.

Sonie has been dishing out explosive, fusion-style sushi since 1999. Never down-the-line Japanese dining, here you’ll find more-is-more creations like “sushi pizza” (a staple on the menu since Sonie first opened that substitutes pizza dough for a flat layer of sushi rice layered with tempura flakes, avocado, ebiko and scallion), as well as an easy-going, college kid kind of vibe that’s at odds with most Japanese restaurants.

This is one of the best Thai restaurants in town. Cozy-yet-chic, it serves a menu based on dishes the owner’s grandmother used to cook—Thai food that borrows both from her hometown on the Eastern seaboard, Trat, and where the family now lives, Khon Kaen. Do try the moo cha muang (pork with Guttiferae tree leaves) and pla too tod (deep-fried mackerel), along with the cocktails and mocktails made with intriguing local ingredients.

Tapas Y Vino

The Roof Gastro

2/F, Pullman Grande Sukhumvit, 30 Sukhumvit Soi 21 (Asoke), 02-204-4158. MRT Sukhumvit. Open daily 6-11pm.

25/F, Siam@Siam Design Hotel & Spa, 865 Rama 1 Rd., 02-217-3070. BTS National Stadium. Open daily 6-11pm.

Tapas y Vino’s plates are much more sophisticated than you’d find in your average tapas joint. For example, the classic diced potatoes, patatas bravas, are artfully presented as six small hollowed out, inch-long cylinders stuffed with a wonderfully tangy mayonnaise. The sophistication isn’t just in the presentation, either. There’s a certain sense of occasion to dining under the big Spanish chandeliers, with a wall of wine to one side and the cooks on the other.

This rooftop bar and restaurant offers 25th-story views in a refreshingly fussfree atmosphere. The urban jungle decor is a playful blend of sculptural pieces and funky lighting while the menu focuses on meats you can grill at your own table on sizzling hot stones. Beef ranges from Australian rib-eye to Argentinean beef tenderloin and all the way up to Aussie wagyu sirloin. You can also pick from a range of seafood options and creative pastas.

Premium steaks, lobster bisque, beef tartare and duck liver terrine populate the menu of this ballsy steakhouse on the mezzanine floor of Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel. New York-based designer Tony Chi worked with a combination of rich woods, studded leather chairs and open liquor cabinets to create the appropriate after-dark ambience, while tableside cooking and plating provides an element of theater.

The Service 1921 Restaurant & Bar 123-123/1, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, Charoen Prathet Rd, Chiang Mai. 053-253333. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-11pm.

Built around a colonial house opened in 1921 as the British Consulate of Chiang Mai, this elegant resort’s Asian restaurant is a fantasy of colonial splendor, all dark woods and indigo walls. Sip Asian-inspired cocktails at the bar before exploring regional dishes like the Chinese roast duck or the Hue shrimp and vegetable pancake. In true colonial style, you can then retreat to a smoking room for a Cuban cigar and a whiskey.

Despite its minimal décor, the mood remains perfect in this hard-to-get-into Japnese tavern: lanterns hanging from ropes, Nippon kitsch plastered all over the wooden bar/kitchen, thunderous bellows from the all-male kitchen as patrons come and go, steam rising from the yakitori grill. The menu has two pages of sochu by the glass and some bottles, too, but Nagiya’s nabe (hot pots that come in a variety of flavors and ingredients) are no afterthought.

The food spans full English breakfasts (featuring Joe Sloane’s sausages, cheese omelette and egg and chorizo) to desserts like raspberry tart—well worth the calories.

The St. Regis Hotel’s all-day dining spot moves from live cooking demonstrations by day to a New York bistroinspired menu by night: Caesar salads, lobster Thermidor, 500-day grain-fed wagyu skirt steak and chunky beef burgers. It’s all served up in a crisp, open-plan kitchen and dining room overlooking the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. Even if you’re not a guest at the hotel, it’s worth dropping by early enough to catch the Moet & Chandon Champagne breakfast.

The branch of Yamazato here is even more luxurious and contemporary than its sister in Amsterdam, but it still draws inspiration from classic Japanese design and the art of origami. Offering both a traditional a la carte menu and dedicated teppanyaki and sushi bars, Yamazato is the real deal in terms of Japanese fine dining. Dinner is a grand affair, serving refined 6-to-8course kaiseki menus.

Vertigo is one of Bangkok’s original bywords for rooftop bar, and now it has an indoor operation too—and one that shares the same stunning views from 60 stories above Sathorn. Here you’ll find a gastropub style menu alongside cocktails tailored to each customer’s liking, all served in a flamboyant dining room of purple lighting, baroque motifs and galactic prints.
