publisher’s letter I’ve missed you all dearly! Producing this magazine has truly been a labor of love. As some of you know, I took some time away from everything to complete my Bachelor’s degree. After years of being out of college, God opened a door for me to return. It was bitter sweet but I made it through. I learned some new skills and ways I could further develop my brand and this magazine.

anita Glover has always been fascinated with spirits. Not the ghostly kind, rather the ones you find in glasses at bars. Yes cocktails! As a college student going to happy hour and restaurants, she noticed a pull towards always being intrigued with the cocktail menu. When she noticed that she thoroughly enjoyed studying the menus and learning about the drinks, she found herself bar hopping with an eagerness to learn about drinks and the bartending trade. After completing her studies at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Cal State Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles, Glover worked at Ed Hardy and Christian Audigier clothing companies which consisted of a lot of travel. But when things slowed down after the economy crashed she had a moment to reflect on what her future would entail. This meant deciding on whether to stay in San Diego, or go elsewhere. “I moved back here and then I ended up moving to South Beach because one of my friends said there was an opportunity at a fine dining steakhouse that was celebrity driven, and they just needed people really bad. I just happened to have nothing but time,” she recalls. That call was on a Monday and by Thursday,

Glover had a one way ticket to Miami - and a mind to see what the future had to offer. “I wasn’t just there for tips. I was enjoying the business and the industry.” Because the desire to learn bartending was insatiable, Glover headed to bartending school. Shortly after she landed a job bartending there was no stopping her. She left Miami after just a year, and returned to San Diego to try her hand at life back home. “I initially thought I could do this for a summer, but it’s been 8 years now.” One opportunity turned into another and The Bar Bank was born. Glover is constantly booked and often gets rave reviews from the above and beyond service she and her team provide. From San Diego to Los Angeles, The Bar Bank has become a staple company for many of her clients parties. When asked what advice she’d give aspiring entrepreneurs, Glover says “I would definitely say brainstorm and write down your ideas. Put them in a book and step by step take off each task. By Chida Rebecca s a kid, Belmont Park was always one of my favorite places to frequent. I felt like it gave us San Diegans that semi Coney Island experience on the west coast, but with perfect year-round weather. Known for hosting great sunsets, ocean waves, ice cream, a roller coaster, food and games, Belmont Park was our go-to. But I didn’t realize the amount of history the park held. All I knew was that it had been there my whole life. As one of San Diego’s most historic locations in town, Belmont was built in 1925 by Mr. John D. Spreckles in an effort to stimulate real estate sales. The then Mission Beach Amusement Center’s star attraction was the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, which spans 2,600 square feet and took less than two months to build. The original cost to construct the coaster was a whopping $150,000. By the mid-80s, the coaster had

become an eyesore and was near closure. But $2 million later, the coaster was restored and reintroduced more vibrant than before. Today the Giant Dipper is 93 years old. Throughout the decades Belmont has had its ebbs and flows, going from bustling to rarely visited, but the park has survived and is thriving. When planning for our August issue, knew I wanted to profile Belmont because I had seen some changes take place there over the years, but never really took the time to investigate. Soon I was in touch with an old friend, Michelle McKee, who serves as the park’s Marketing Director. We met up and got my Belmont


tour underway. As we ventured through the park, there were surprises at every turn. Like the food selections. I found the combination of boutique eateries and restaurants refreshing. You could go from grabbing a corn dog on the go, to a lively sports bar/restaurant setting within moments. Some new park additions include the zip line, in which kids and adults can be seen flying overhead throughout the park, and the newly remodeled and purely epic arcade gaming area - which also houses a phenomenally designed laser tag area. My favorite find was the escape room building called Escapology. This place is perfect for business or familial groups, to come, put their heads together; and look for ways to escape. These days gadgets and cell phones are a favorite among youth, thankfully the park offers easy distractions in the form of activities. Rock climbing, bumper cars, and highly interactive gaming are

enough to make any elementary mind put his or her phone down. While the park is diverse in activity offerings, Michelle and I were able to talk about the ways in which Belmont is becoming a more inclusive and diverse place from its marketing to those that it employs. This was an important conversation because I believe diversity is key. “It’s so important to reflect the beautiful mix of diversity we have here at the park. When you look around you see every age, gender, and culture from around the world. Everyone is welcome at Belmont Park and that’s what makes this place so special,” Michelle shared. And she was right. The park was diverse from the top down. This made me happy and even more excited about returning. Of course, there’s only so much we can show you through the pages of a magazine, but overall I really would encourage you to visit there. This isn’t all though... keep reading!


The Plunge at Fit marked the official return of the iconic beachfront pool in Belmont Park re-opening its doors to the public July 4. Built in 1925 alongside the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, the nearly 400,000 gallon swimming pool underwent a massive renovation, making it one of the most desirable locations at the park. At the grand re-opening event Mayor Kevin Faulconer shared “The Plunge at Fit in Belmont Park is a beloved landmark for Mission Beach residents and the entire city of San Diego.” He added “It has long been a place for children, families and neighbors to exercise and make memories together, and this restoration ensures that many more generations of San Diegans can enjoy that same experience.” At the time of its opening, the 60-by-175 foot pool was the largest salt water pool in the world. In 1940, the salt water of The Plunge began to damage its filtration system and fresh water was brought in to fill the pool. The Plunge then became “the largest indoor heated pool in Southern California,” at 12,000 square feet. A series of safety and maintenance issues in the decades that followed led to the pool’s closing in 2014. Shortly thereafter, Pacifica Enterprises embarked on a nearly three year project to restore this beloved attraction to its iconic status. Pacifica Enterprises refreshed the beachfront pool and building with a new contemporary design, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls that maximize ocean views and a retractable roof that allows for a climate-controlled environment. Working closely with City of San Diego’s Historical Resources Board and Save Our Heritage Organisation, Pacifica Enterprises included historical features from the original 1925 structure as well as replicas of original entrance archways. To enhance the total experience, the Plunge at Fit now includes a dining deck connecting to the newly renovated Beach House for guests to enjoy food, drinks and a fresh ocean breeze.

Dorothy Jones, an extremely talented illustrator and art designer from Mobile, Alabama, creates beautiful custom crafts that pay homage to the

natural beauty of Black women. Her company is called Ohh She Did That, and her most popular products are her handmade, hand-crafted coffee mugs. With more than 12 different designs to choose from, Dorothy is overwhelmed every single week with

new orders to the point that she regularly sells out. Her mugs are steeply priced at $55 and up, but the quality and creativity of her work is well worth it. Each mug displays positive images of professional Black women with natural hair and Afro-centric attire. Each mug also has a different name with a unique design that features a colorful character that matches the description. lanning a trip abroad? That's exciting! But you have lots to do and less time than you think to get it done. What do you need to accomplish before leaving? Here's a handy checklist to help you get your ducks in a row.

Passport If you have a current passport, check the expiration date. Many countries require that you have at least two to four blank visa pages, and that your passport be valid for 6 months past

the last day of your trip. If you don't have a passport or it needs renewal, get that done first. The U.S. State Department announced an increase in processing time for passports to 6-8 weeks. Even a higher-cost expedited passport can take three weeks. Fortunately, FedEx Office is teaming up with RushMyPassport to offer further expedited U.S. passport services. Stop by one of 2,000 FedEx Office locations or visit FedEx.com/passport to complete your application. You can even purchase government-compliant passport photos at their locations. Money Savvy travelers carry a combination of cash, traveler's checks and credit cards in separate locations. Learn overall currency exchange rates and make a cheat sheet with that country's equivalents of $5, $10 and $20. Exchange some at the airport when you arrive. Then exchange more in a touristy area posting competitive exchange rates to find better deals.

Health Consult your doctor to catch up on vaccinations. Find out if the country where you're traveling requires vaccinations for entry, or which are recommended, on the CDC website: wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/travel-vaccines. Vaccines should be administered a month ahead for maximum effectiveness. If you take prescription medications, bring them in their original containers, plus a copy of the prescription(s).

Insurance Some health insurance policies cover you overseas, but many don't. You can purchase travel insurance to ensure you're covered for both doctor or hospital visits and for transporting you to a hospital if necessary. Some renters or homeowners insurance policies cover loss or theft abroad, but you can purchase additional coverage if they don't.

Planning ahead will not only ensure a hassle-free trip, but will give you peace of mind in case the unexpected happens. Knowing what you need before you go will make your trip memorable - for all the right reasons. These general guidelines are not exhaustive. Be aware that laws change and vary from country to country. Check relevant resources including travel.state.gov/destination for information about your destination. Read the entry under "Entry/Exit Requirements." This will give you information on what is required for a U.S. citizen to visit the country under basic circumstances, such as for tourism. magine being in the best physical, mental, financial and emotional shape of your life, only to have it all tested so severely, that it’s almost gone. In an instant. This is the story of Terrance Minnoy, a successful pharmaceutical professional, motivational speaker and author. With a gentleman’s charm and a politician’s savvy, Minnoy has lived an accomplished life. Successfully forging paths for himself, he was on a fast track to establishing a modest empire that would make anyone proud. His bills were paid, money was in the bank, and for the most part, life was copasetic. But suddenly, unbeknownst to him, “Miracle” Minnoy (as he’s often called) would encounter the most difficult setback he had ever faced. Three strokes within 24 hours. Someone has a stroke every 40 seconds and every four minutes someone dies

from one. “Wealth doesn’t matter if you don’t have good health,” he shares. An athlete throughout his high school and collegiate days, Minnoy understands the importance of being in shape physically, and preventative fitness, but the journey during his recovery brought about some harsh realizations where he was lacking awareness in other facets. “Remember, stroke is defined as a brain attack. I’ve also had attacks in other areas of my life as well. I’ve had mental attacks. I’ve had spiritual attacks. I’ve had emotional attacks. Career attacks. Business attacks. Financial attacks as well. Every area of our life is susceptible to having a stroke. In my case, unfortunately, some of these attacks were self-inflicted. I was actually the cause of the attack. If I didn’t cause it, I surely played a role. I was basically attacking myself.” This realization spun some deeper healing for him.


As a result of pulling through such a significant time, Minnoy opted to pen his victorious recovery to paper, spreading a message of hope through his latest book, Indifferent Strokes: Embracing Life’s Adversities. Some may call him “The Come Back Kid”, but for Minnoy, his impending challenges were all simply apart of God’s plan. “See, God will allow you to go through some rough patches in your life. He will also give you opportunities to grow as you journey into places you don’t feel comfortable…” This is exactly what the strokes represented to him. A rough patch, and an opportunity to grow into a place he didn’t feel comfortable; causing his sur-

vival to put him in a position to motivate others as an author and a speaker. As the healing ensued, Minnoy’s understanding of his calling in life grew in addition to his appreciation for it. Through his book he shares strategies that individuals can use to recover from setbacks, steps to reinvention, and ways to illuminate one’s true passion and purpose. He will encourage and inspire you to face challenges with optimism, high expectancy and tenacity. “When I leave this world, I want people to know that I left. I want to make such an impact with my family, friends and others around me that my energy and presence are noticeably missing.” Not only does Minnoy want this for himself, but all those he comes in contact with.

Vinegar Soak

When using baking soda, you only need a small amount (2-3 tablespoons) in a full foot bath of warm water for 10-20 minutes.

Almost any type of vinegar. Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar are popular options.

After your soak, gently use a pumice stone or foot brush to remove dead skin and apply plenty of moisturizer after. If you experience any redness or irritation while soaking your feet, immediately remove them from the solution.

Use cool water to create the soak, as hot water may dry out the skin more. Use 1 parts vinegar to 2 parts water as a general guideline. Soak feet for 5 to 10 minutes to start. Apply a moisturizer, petroleum jelly, or coconut oil prior to putting on socks to seal in moisture after doing a vinegar soak is recommended. Doing this treatment a few times a week should suffice, as it can be further drying on the skin.

Hour, a social justice talk show that aired on MyTV and at KBLK Radio from 2017 to 2018. Pamela recently moved to West Coast Radio and is slated to do several projects there. Passion for Cooking Leads to a New Future for Southeast San Diego Resident Black & Magazine Newswire SAN DIEGO, CA — Deon Winters wanted to cook his whole life and that decision is what saved him from the criminal justice system. He enrolled in the free Culinary Arts certificate program at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), located just a few miles away from his home in Lincoln Park. Before wearing a chef ’s uniform, Winters spent most of his twenties in between prison and probation, earning his GED at Ironwood State. “I am one of the stories you read about or see in the movies, from the streets to the classroom,” he said. “Growing up in Southeastern San Diego you’re already labeled by law enforcement.” “SDCE is a rich representation of San Diego’s most marginalized communities. Our students are among the most diverse in California culturally, ethnically and educationally.” said Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D., President of SDCE. “As adult learners returning to school, their courageous choice to enroll in SDCE after facing many hurdles in their lives will open doors to new opportunities for themselves and for generations to come.” SDCE’s 36-week Culinary Arts career training program emphasizes the basic principles of cooking, theory, food prep, safe food handling and pastry making. Students practice developing menus and managing food costs to gain a better understanding of the restaurant business. After certification completion, SDCE graduates are ready for entry-level employment or can transition to San Diego Mesa College with up to six (6) college credits earned toward an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts/Culinary Management. “The beauty of SDCE’s Culinary and Bakeshop Academy is that there are many ways to be successful,” said Winters. “Even if you don’t have money, they can help you.” Winters was a part of

SDCE’s Rising to Success (R2S) PATHWAYS program and received vouchers for class materials. Winters credits Chef Liz Trevino at SDCE for helping him fight for his education. “I was ready to give up on this when I had to go through the courts again.” His probation officers attempted to pull him away from school. He attended class four days each week for eight hours each day. “Now I don’t have to deal with them at all anymore and it’s because of this school and Chef Liz. The judge saw my progression and commitment and she liked it.” This fall Winters will pursue an Associate of Science Degree in Culinary Arts/Culinary Management at San Diego Mesa College with a San Diego Promise scholarship, which provides two years of tuition. SDCE’s free Culinary and Bakeshop Academy is located in Mountain View at the Educational Cultural Complex and in Point Loma at West City Campus. Fall semester begins Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Five Friends Who Saved $50 a Week for Two Years Just Purchased Their First Investment Property nigan told Because of Them We Can. Together, the group saved enough money within two years and they have recently bought their first property which they plan to restore before renting it out. They have also established a property management company with hopes to acquire more properties in the future. Najee Hannigan, a 26-year old entrepreneur from Philadelphia, encouraged his friends and cousins to put aside $50 a week so that they could all collectively invest in something big. Two years later, they have successfully accumulated enough money to purchase their first own real estate property. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This is the African proverb that Hannigan thought of when he talked to his two younger cousins, Meqai Herder and Ahmid Hill, who are both 23-years old, and his two long-time friends, Tyree Harvey and Darius Jacobs, who are both 26-years old, about a business proposal in hopes to change their lives as well. In 2017, Hannigan thought that it was a great idea for each of them to save $50 a week or $200 a month and the money they put together could be used to purchase an investment property. “The most challenging part was getting them to understand that time is going to pass regardless, we can invest in [ourselves] or continue to let time pass us by,” Han-

Hannigan, who is also a founder and co-owner of the childcare center Extraordinary Scholars Academy, was thankful that his friends trusted him fully despite their doubt at first. He believes trust is the foundation that made their plan into fruition. “Find people you trust and never give up. Don’t argue about dumb stuff and always think of the bigger picture. Allela was inspired to create the gloves because he and his family struggled to communicate with his 6-year-old niece who was born deaf. “My niece wears the gloves, pairs them to her phone or mine, then starts signing and I’m able to understand what she’s saying. Like all sign language users, she’s very good at lip reading, so she doesn’t need me to sign back,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. The young inventor, who also works for Intel and teaches data science at Oxford University, first launched the gloves at a special needs school in rural Migori county, south-west Kenya. He aims for it to be available in every school for special needs children to assist as many deaf or hearing-impaired children as possible.

Roy Allela, a 25-year old engineer and inventor from Kenya, has found the ultimate solution to bridging the communication barrier between deaf and hearing people. He has invented the Sign-IO gloves that can translate signed hand movements to audible speech so deaf people can "talk" even to those who don't understand sign language. The Sign-IO gloves feature sensors mounted on each of the five fingers to determine its movements, including how much a finger is bent. The gloves are connected via Bluetooth to an Android app that Allela also invented which uses a text-tospeech function to convert the gestures to vocal speech.

The Sign-IO gloves are currently still in the prototype phase of development but it has already received awards and prize money which helped him further improve the invention. It has been the 2018 grand winner of the “Hardware Trailblazer Award” from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) global finals in New York and a second runner-up at the Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders in Innovation Fellowship in London. Once it has been made available in the public market, Sign-IO gloves will be one of the many sensor-based devices that are “expected to generate revenue of around $30 billion by end of 2024,” according to Global NewsWire.
