President’s Message Earl “Skip” Cooper, II President/Chief Executive Officer

In Recognition of Black Music Month

T

he Black Business Association’s 35th Annual Awards Dinner was a sumptuous and stirring event indeed for all who attended. A warm June evening brought together hundreds of friends and supporters of the BBA with the common purpose of recognizing corporations, agencies, and individuals that have been most supportive of the growth and development of the Black Business Association, and the African American business community as a whole. Oh, yes, we also had a really good time, too. For this event we chose to focus the spotlight upon a vital facet of African American life and commerce that touches everyone within the community: Black Music. It would not be an

exaggeration to say that the rhythms and rhymes of Black music go well beyond the boundaries of our community and can be said to in fact touch everybody on the planet Earth. How many of us have travelled the world, finding ourselves in some distant outpost, only to encounter a man or woman in a Michael Jackson Thriller t-shirt? I even have it on good authority that hip hop sounds can be heard floating from living room windows on the crowded streets of Beijing. Music, as the saying goes, is universal and there is no more common thread than the business of music around the world. If you don’t believe me, ask Smokey Robinson how many languages Being With You has been translated into or what it’s like to keep

I congratulate the awardees for their stellar entrepreneurial accomplishments in the field of entertainment, and hope that we will all take inspiration from their achievements. Congresswoman Waters was one of a select few House and Senate leaders invited to attend the signing ceremony for the legislation at the White House. In expressing his thanks to those who have played key roles on this issue, President Obama said that Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank and Congresswoman Waters “have done a great job”. She was also instrumental in the reauthorization of the McKinneyVento Homeless Assistance Act, which was included in S. 896. Congresswoman Waters also worked with Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to improve the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) to allow states that have received the minimum NSP funding to shift resources to target areas most at risk of foreclosure. Congresswoman Waters said, “I am pleased that we were able to pass this important legislation to help families save their homes. Vice President Biden Challenge: Help Retrofit America

T

o rebuild and strengthen the middle class, Vice President Joe Biden wants Americans earning more money in enterprises that upgrade America’s buildings, increase their efficiency, save money, and at the same time, help to improve our environment. A smart plan will ultimately save Americans billions of dollars in energy costs, while creating jobs and reducing the strain on our nation’s power grid. Reducing the load on our coalfired power plants would, in turn, cut air pollution - letting our kids and seniors breathe a little easier. At the same time, retrofitting American homes will also enhance their value - since energy efficient homes are more valuable than drafty ones. In other words, an aggressive program to retrofit America will create more work, more wealth, and better health for middle class Americans. That is why today Vice President Biden asked the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to help the administration develop long-term, innovative proposals to begin weatherizing and retrofitting our nation’s building stock. Fortunately, the Obama-Biden administration is already off to a great start! Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the administration made a significant investment in making America’s homes more energy efficient, dramatically increasing previous funding levels for weatherization and retrofit of buildings. For example, the Weatherization Assistance Program was funded at only around $250 million in 2008. The Recovery Act boosted funding to $5 billion. That translates to jobs for professionally trained crews using computerized

energy audits and advanced equipment to determine the most cost-effective measures. To meet this demand for workers, there will have to be a huge ramp-up in training workers. That’s why the Recovery Act also includes $500 million for green job training through the Department of Labor. Moving beyond those who are presently benefiting, the Obama-Biden administration wants to find ways to extend energy efficiency to the entire middle class. On average, a complete weatherization reduces a household’s annual gas heating consumption by 32 percent; that translates to an average of $350/ year, at current prices. Retrofitting and upgrading buildings so they waste less energy benefits the middle class in numerous ways: job creation; entrepreneurial and business opportunities; a healthier environment; and reduced home energy costs. We don’t want the national drive to cut America’s home energy bills to come to an end when the Recovery Act funding is spent. So, over the next 90 days, we will review proposals that build on the foundation laid in ARRA to expand green opportunity and energy savings for the middle class. We at CEQ are happy to accept the challenge!.

Middle Class Task Force Announces Agency Partnerships to Build a Strong Middle Class through a Green Economy Department of Labor Announces $500 Million in Recovery Act Funds for Green Job Training www.AStrongMiddleClass.gov

As part of their commitment to developing new policies, proposals and ideas to help America’s middle class, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced new agency partnerships to foster job growth for a new green economy at the Middle Class Task Force in Denver. “It was clear at our first meeting in Philadelphia that partnerships – on the federal, state and local level – are critical to creating green opportunity for middle class Americans. This insight was an instructive one for our taskforce and we’ve been hard at work turning this advice into action,” said Vice President Biden. “Over the past three months, members of the Task Force and their staffs have come together to work on ways in which we can leverage programs at different agencies to ensure that green jobs are accessible to middle-class workers, as well as lower-income workers trying to gain a foothold into the middle class.” The U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are partnering to bring training and employment to public housing residents. In a joint letter, Secretaries Solis and Donovan encouraged local Workforce Investment Boards and Public Housing Agencies to work together to bolster pathways to training and employment for residents of HUD housing. Through this new partnership, residents of public housing will be able to more easily find training programs and sustainable employment in the green job sectors created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). Additionally, the Secretaries of Energy, Education and Labor announced a collaboration to make it a major priority to institutionalize cross-agency com-

Oral History Project Initiated: Civil Rights History

Project Act of 2009

“A fundamental principle of American democracy is that individuals should stand up for their rights and beliefs and fight for justice.” ~ Civil Rights History Project Act of 2009.

P

resident Barack Obama signed the Civil Rights History Project Act of 2009 bill into law in the Oval Office of the White House on Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Shown above with President Obama at the signing were, from left: Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL); Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY); Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA); Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO); Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and Rep. John Lewis (D-GA). The Act funds a 5-year initiative to record oral and video histories of those who lived during the African American Civil Rights movement between 1954 and 1968. The Act - requires the Librarian of Congress and the Secretary

of the Smithsonian Institution (acting through the Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture) to establish an oral history project to: (1) collect video and audio recordings of, and visual and written materials relevant to the personal histories of, participants in the Civil Rights movement; and (2) make the collection available for public use through the Library of Congress and the Museum. “While the Civil Rights movement had many visible leaders, including Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks, there were many others whose impact and experience were just as important to the cause but who are not as well known,” reads the Civil Rights History Project Act of 2009. Now a half a century later, there is a need to collect these personal histories before these voices are lost. “There is

a generation of Americans who experienced the Civil Rights movement firsthand, and we must not let their stories about the fight for equality be forgotten,” said U.S. Senator Lamarr Alexander. “The lives of real people caught up in this monumental chapter in American history must be preserved so future generations can fully understand the struggles others undertook to transform our nation.” The bill permits the Librarian and Secretary to solicit and accept donations of funds and in-kind contributions. In addition, H.R. 586 authorizes the appropriation of $500,000 for fiscal year 2010 and such sums as may be necessary for fiscal years 2011 through 2014. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that enacting H.R. 586 would cost $4 million over the 2010-2014 period. Official White House Photo by Pete Souza.

Governor Schwarzenegger’s Address to CA Legistors

T

hank you very much, Speaker Bass, Senate Leader Steinberg, Assemblyman Blakeslee, Senator Hollingsworth, my fellow constitutional officers and my fellow servants of the people. First of all, I want to thank you for the gracious invitation to address you here today and to address the people of California. Today I want to talk about financial crisis. Three months ago the members of this body came together to set aside their ideological differences and did what they believed was best for California. We solved $36 billion of a $42 billion deficit. But as you know, part of our budget agreement required us, by law, to go back to the people for approval, right at a time when the people wanted to send Sacramento a powerful message. And that message was clear: Do your job. Don’t come to us with those complex

issues. Live within your means. Get rid of the waste and inefficiencies and don’t raise taxes. Now, as I stand here today, we are in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. in the past 18 months one-third of the world’s wealth has vanished. And because of that and because of California’s outdated and volatile tax system, our revenues have dropped 27 percent from last year. And you can see this right here on the charts next to me; it’s very clear. We are now back to the same level of revenues we had in 2003 and when you adjust for inflation and population, we are back to the level of the late ‘90s. Today, just three months after our February budget, we once again face a $24 billion deficit.

California’s day of reckoning is here. In order to deal with our limited amount of money I have proposed some dramatic

changes in our May Revision. Those spending cuts represent much more than the hard decisions necessary to balance our budget. They represent the transformation of what services Sacramento can provide and how those services are delivered. The immediate task before us is to cut spending to the money that is available to us. We have no time to waste. The controller has told us that we have 14 days to act or California is at risk of running out of cash. I’ve already used my executive authority to reduce the state payroll and I’ve proposed the necessary cuts to the three largest areas of our budget, which is education, health care and prisons. I know the consequences of those cuts are not just dollars. I see the faces behind those dollars. I see the children whose teachers will be laid off. I see the Alzheimer’s patients losing some of their in-home support services. I see the firefighters and the police officers who will lose their jobs. People come up to me all the time, pleading, “Governor, please don’t cut my program.” They tell me about how those cuts affect them and their loved ones. I see the pain in their eyes and I hear the fear in their voices and I hear the demonstrations outside of our Capitol. It’s an awful feeling but we have no choice. Our wallet is empty, our bank is closed and our credit is dried up. I know for many of you these will be the hardest votes that you will ever make. But see Govenor’s Address page 18

THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary June 2, 2009

AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC APPRECIATION MONTH, 2009 -------

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION The legacy of African-American composers, singers, songwriters, and musicians is an indelible piece of our Nation’s culture. Generations of African Americans have carried forward the musical traditions of their forebears, blending old styles with innovative rhythms and sounds. They have enriched American music and captured the diversity of our Nation. During African-American Music Appreciation Month, we honor this rich heritage. This legacy tells a story of ingenuity and faith. Amidst the injustice of slavery, African Americans lifted their voices to the heavens through spirituals. This religious music united African Americans and helped sustain them through one of the darkest periods in our Nation’s history. Years later, spirituals contributed to the advent of a new form of music: gospel. Both styles incorporated elements of African music and were rooted in faith. The African-American music tradition also reflects creativity and individualism. Blues, jazz, soul, and rock and roll synthesize various musical traditions to create altogether new sounds. Their novel chord progressions, improvisation, and mood showcase individual musicians while also creating a cohesive musical unit. In addition, African-American composers have thrived in traditional genres such as musical theater, opera, classical symphony, and choral music, providing their unique imprint and creatively growing these forms of music. All of these contributions are treasured across America and the world. During African-American Music Appreciation Month, we recall the known and unknown musicians who helped create this musical history. Their contributions help illuminate the human experience and spirit, and they help us reflect on our Nation’s ongoing narrative. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as AfricanAmerican Music Appreciation Month. I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs that raise awareness and foster appreciation of music which is composed, arranged, and performed by African Americans. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtythird.

Consumer Confidence Increasing

Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index™ at Highest Level in Eight Months Lynn Franco (212) 339-0344

T

he Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index™, which had improved considerably in April, posted another large gain in May 2009. The Index now stands at 54.9 (1985=100), up from 40.8 in April. The Present Situation Index increased to 28.9 from 25.5 last month. The Expectations Index rose to 72.3 from 51.0 in April. The Consumer Confidence Survey™ is based on a representative sample of 5,000 U.S. households. The monthly survey is conducted for The Conference Board by TNS. TNS is the world’s largest custom research company. The cutoff date for May’s preliminary results was May 19th. Says Lynn Franco, Director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center: “After two months of significant

improvements, the Consumer Confidence Index is now at its highest level in eight months (Sept. 2008, 61.4). Continued gains in the Present Situation Index indicate that current conditions have moderately improved, and growth in the second quarter is likely to be less negative than in the first. Looking ahead, consumers are considerably less pessimistic than they were earlier this year, and expectations are that business conditions, the labor market and incomes will improve in the coming months. While confidence is still weak by historical standards, as far as consumers are concerned, the worst is now behind us.” Consumers’ overall assessment of current-day conditions improved again.

way to provide those services at a lower cost? For example, I’ve asked our State Board of Education to make textbooks available in digital formats. Now, we expect the first science and math books to be digital by this fall. If we expand this to more textbooks schools could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year and that’s hundreds of millions of dollars that could be used to hire more teachers and to reduce class sizes. In so many areas of government there are opportunities like this for reform. All we have to do is go out and seize them. Spending on prisons has nearly doubled in the last five years. We spend $49,000 per inmate per year; the national average is only $32,000. Now, other states have privately run correctional facilities that operate at half of the cost. Why can’t we? We must also restructure the relationship between state and local government. We all hear from the local officials about the heavy hand of Sacramento. If we are providing fewer resources we have an obligation to cut

from Governor’s Address page 10

the people sent us here to lead not only in times of prosperity but also in times of crisis. We must make these cuts and live within in our means, because what is the alternative? If we don’t act, the state will simply run out of money and go insolvent. You see, we are not Washington. We cannot print our own money, we cannot run trillion dollar deficits and we can only spend the money that we have. That is the harsh but simple reality. Now, at the same time, we cannot take this budget and make it just about cuts. There are also some great opportunities here for structural reform. Like Winston Churchill said, “A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity but an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” So let’s use this crisis as an opportunity to make government more efficient and to find innovative ways to stretch the taxpayer dollar. Can we not find a

Those claiming business conditions are “good” increased to 8.7 percent from 7.9 percent. However, those claiming conditions are “bad” increased to 45.3 percent from 44.9 percent. Consumers’ appraisal of the job market was also more favorable. Those claiming jobs are “hard to get” decreased to 44.7 percent from 46.6 percent in April. Those saying jobs are “plentiful” edged up to 5.7 percent from 4.9 percent. Consumers’ short-term outlook improved significantly in May. Those expecting business conditions will improve over the next six months increased to 23.1 percent from 15.7 percent, while those anticipating conditions will worsen declined to 17.8 percent from 24.4 percent in April. The employment outlook was also less pessimistic. The percentage of consumers expecting more jobs in the months ahead increased to 20.0 percent from 14.2 percent, while those anticipating fewer jobs decreased to 25.2 percent from 32.5 percent. The proportion of consumers anticipating an increase in their incomes edged up to 10.2 percent from 8.3 percent. most of the strings and mandates and to get out of the way. Right now we are cutting billions of dollars from our schools, so shouldn’t we give districts more freedom and flexibility and not tie their hands with strict rules like who is allowed to mow the lawn or fix the roof, or do the plumbing? I’m also proposing once again to eliminate and consolidate more than a dozen state departments, boards and commissions. These include the Waste Management Board, the Court Reporters Board, the Department of Boating and Waterways and the Inspection and Maintenance Review Committee and so on. There is absolutely no reason to hold onto those redundant boards in the crisis. We should not and I will not, cut a dollar from education or a dollar from health care or a dollar from public safety or a dollar from our state parks without first cutting the Waste Management Board and other boards like it. (Applause) Every dollar that we save

NATIONAL CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, 2009 -------

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION Caribbean Americans have made lasting contributions to our Nation’s culture and history, and the month of June has been set aside to honor their cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and social diversity. Generations of immigrants have preserved the traditions of their homelands, and these traditions have defined our Nation’s identity. Caribbean Americans bring a unique and vibrant culture. This multilingual and multiethnic tradition has strengthened our social fabric and enriched the diversity of our Nation. Millions of individuals in the United States have Caribbean roots. Unfortunately some Caribbean Americans were forced to our country as slaves; others arrived of their own volition. All have sought the promise of a brighter tomorrow for themselves and their children. In their pursuit of success, Caribbean Americans exhibit the traits all Americans prize: determination, a devotion to community, and patriotism. They have made their mark in every facet of our society, from art to athletics and science to service. Caribbean Americans have also safeguarded our Nation in the United States Armed Forces. This month we also recognize the critical relationship the United States maintains with Caribbean nations. In a world of increasing communication and connectivity, this friendship has become even more important. We are neighbors, partners, and friends; we share the same aspirations for our children; and we strive for the very same freedoms. Together, we can meet the common challenges we face. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. I urge all Americans to commemorate this month by learning more about the history and culture of Caribbean Americans. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtythird.

from those boards and commissions is a dollar that can help vulnerable citizens. I’m also proposing to sell off state property, because Sacramento should not be in the real estate business, especially when we are in a fiscal crisis like this. Now, I know that the money that we receive from this property won’t go directly to the general fund; it will pay off debt. But that lowers our debt payment, which then does help the general fund. Everywhere I go I hear stories about families selling off their boats and motorcycles to make ends meet. They have garage sales, they have yard sales. They know that you don’t have or keep a boat at the dock when you can’t put food on the table. All of these proposals I have talked about for years and yet they never got done. I remember in 2004 I talked about blowing up the boxes and consolidating agencies. But now we are here in a crisis. Then we had the revenues go up and we had the economy come back in a big way, so we couldn’t get it done. Now we’re in a crisis and we are running out of excuses and we have run out of time. And the people have run out of patience. Early this year we began consolidating all of our IT departments. My proposal to consolidate all of our energy functions is in the legislation before you right now. So is a proposal to consolidate the departments that oversee financial institutions and I will soon send you legislation to merge our tax collection operations. These are all actions that we here can take, on our own, to save money and to make government more efficient and we don’t have to bother the people with those things and we don’t need permission from the federal government. Now, I know that Senator Steinberg is talking about reforming and restructuring the relationships between the state shi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE: MTU). Governor’s Address and local government and Senator Hollingsworth and the Republicans have some great ideas about performancebased budgeting. And in July, we should receive the bipartisan recommendation from our tax modernization commission. This will be a tremendous opportunity to make our revenues more reliable and less volatile and to help the state avoid the boom and the bust budgets that have brought us here today. Let’s all work together on all of those issues and make it happen. I don’t expect every single one of those reforms to happen within the next 14 days but we can certainly get them done before this party adjourns for summer recess on July 17th. Now, there are other big reforms that I continue to believe in very strongly like a spending cap and the rainy day fund in order to further stabilize our revenues but I’m not going to talk to you today about that because those reforms require voter approval. As we all have learned just a few weeks ago, the voters will never trust us on those big

issues until we show that we can do our job in this Capitol and make the tough decisions. There is no doubt that the challenges before us are enormous. They will test our will. They will test our resolve. They will test our leadership. Many of those things that I’m proposing are despised by the special interests that rely on the status quo and we are all too familiar with the interest groups and their army of lobbyists. But let’s not forget, it is our job. We have been sent here to Sacramento to lobby on behalf of the people and on behalf of the great state of California. So in the coming days and weeks, the entire nation will be watching how we react and respond to this crisis. Last week Paul Krugman from the New York Times wrote that California is at a state of paralysis and that our political system has failed to rise to the occasion. People are writing California off. They are talking about the end of California dream. They don’t believe that we in this room have the courage and the determination to do what needs to be done, or that the state is even manage-

able. Let’s prove all the pundits wrong. Let us use this crisis as an opportunity, as an opportunity for great changes, lasting changes. Let’s not think just in short term; let’s think big; let’s think outside the box. Let’s think long-term and lay a new foundation for California’s future. Let’s meet those challenges head-on without gimmicks. I don’t want to hand these problems to the next Governor and I know that you don’t want to hand them to the next Legislature. So I have faith in all of you. I have faith in our ability to once again come together for the good of our state. So I say let’s move forward and put California back on the path to prosperity.

Julius E. Coles to Retire from Africare By Tina Musoke, Media Relations, tmusoke@africare.org

T

rue to his promise to himself and his family, Julius E. Coles has announced his retirement as President of Africare effective December 31, 2009. Taking the reins in 2002, Coles is only the third president of the oldest AfricanAmerican led organization working ex-

clusively on development assistance to Africa. He is fond of saying that “the best time to leave an organization is at the pinnacle of its success, and I believe that is where Africare is today.” Speaking of his predecessor, Coles stated, “It has been a privilege to build on the legacy of C. Payne Lucas, one of the founders and second president of Africare, who took Africare in 1971 from its modest beginnings in the basement of his home and a budget of $39,500 to becoming a well-known, highly respected and successful organization.” Between 1970 and 2002, Africare provided almost $450 million through de-

velopment projects across the continent of Africa. Coles has taken Africare to a new level, bringing in more than $400 million in new commitments in just seven years, almost doubling the total amount of development dollars generated by Africare over its 39-year history. As many of the original members of the Africare staff retired, Coles brought in experienced and highly-trained professionals to update management practices and systems. Financial stability has been achieved through introducing new controls and financial software, instituting and standardizing an innovative accounting system across headquarters and 25 Africa field offices, and streamlining budgeting and reporting systems. As a result, Africare today spends a full 93 cents of every dollar on programs, with only 7 cents spent on administrative and fund raising costs, earning top ratings from Charity Navigator, the American Institute of Philanthropy, and the Better Business Bureau. Coles has opened new doors for private donors, foundations and corporations. In addition to expanding the Africare funds development horizon, Coles has spearheaded the opening of Africare offices in Paris and Ottawa. The current Africare Board of Directors was strengthened with the election to the chairmanship of W. Frank Fountain, Chairman, Walter P. Chrysler Museum Foundation and Advisor to Chrysler LLC; and the elections of Ambassador Howard Jeter, former President and CEO of the Leon H. Sullivan Founda-

tion; Barbara McKinzie, National President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; former Senator William H. Frist, M.D.; Alexander B. Cummings, Chief Administrative Officer and Executive Vice President, The Coca Cola Company; and Gail Koff, Esq., Founding and Managing Partner, Jacoby & Meyers, LLC. On the program side, Coles added water and sanitation as one of the key program areas, along with food security and agriculture, health and HIV/ AIDS, and emergency and humanitarian response. With steadfast commitment to Africare’s mission “to improve the quality of life for the people of Africa,” Coles has opened new programs across the continent, partnering with the U.S. Government, African national governments, private foundations, and non-governmental organizations. Coles’ initiatives have strengthened Africare’s reputation as a trustworthy grassroots organization that works hand in hand with local communities, using integrated strategies and innovative techniques. Africare Board Chairman W. Frank Fountain says Coles has “performed tremendously.” “When Julius Coles took over the reins of Africare, he had very big shoes to fill. C. Payne Lucas had led Africare for over 30 years and was a legend in his time. Julius has taken the organization to new heights in terms of management efficiency and expansion of resources devoted to Africa that few other private organizations have achieved in the U.S. and around the world. Millions of people across Africa are far better off today than they were when Julius came on board. Julius’ contribution to Africare will be remembered as one of the most successful in Africare’s history. He and the Africare team have developed the organization to a point where it is now poised to move into a new era of more growth. After a long career in public service, most of it devoted to Africa, Julius has earned the right to retire, rest, relax and enjoy some of the hard-earned fruits of his labor on behalf of the betterment of humankind. Julius will be truly missed.” Looking back over his tenure at Africare Coles observed, “The past seven

15 Questions to Measure the Strength of Your Home Page By Tom Now for StartupNation www.startupnation.com

T

he home page is typically where most site visitors will enter your website. It can determine whether a prospective customer is intrigued and eager to learn more, or is instead confused, frustrated and turned-off. Let’s face it – your home page is one of the “Money” pages on your website, so it better be effective. Therefore, it would behoove you to spend time revisiting your home page and making sure that it answers these fifteen fundamental questions to drive your business results.

1. Who are you? Does the home page make it explicitly clear who you are, including your company name, your logo and your tagline? Is it clear if you are a services firm, retailer, wholesaler, manufacturer, B2B firm, or B2C firm, etc.?

2. What are your products or services? You would be shocked at how many websites do not make this clear on their home page, but instead assume that of course the site visitor knows exactly who they are and what they sell. Big mistake. Don’t assume anything.

3. What can I do here? Assuming you make it clear what you sell, is it just as clear what the site visitor can do on your site, whether it be a purchase, a download of a free trial, or engagement in a community?

4. What’s your identity? Are you professional and reliable? Are you cool and cutting-edge? Are you fun and silly? Make it clear on the home page, and then be consistent with your identity throughout the site.

5. Is your design helping you? Too many small business owners think that just having a website is good enough regardless of what it looks like,

and they sacrifice design. Remember, though, that site visitors are real people, and they get it when a site is amateurish.

6. What’s your differentiation? Clarify how you are different, and the unique value you offer the site visitor. Do you offer the highest quality? Are your prices the cheapest? Do you have the broadest selection? Is your customer service absolutely amazing?

7. What does the website include? The home page needs to ground the new site visitor. Does your home page provide a clear view as to what’s included in the site from a high level? Does it answer the visitor’s question of “What can I find here?”

8. Are you being a “tease”? Like the cover of a magazine, your home page should entice new site visitors to want to check out additional pages. This can be anything from special promotions to free eBooks to announcements of upcoming events.

9. You don’t force me to scroll, do you? Is your home page succinct and to the point? Or are you expecting your site visitors to scroll and scroll and scroll to read everything you have to tell them? Remember, many people do not scroll.

10. Is your home page scanable? Most website visitors do not read through an entire page, but instead scan the page. To that end, it’s important that you are providing them with visual cues, such as headers, subheads, images, movies, links, etc. And remember to leave sufficient white space on the page – clutter can be a major obstacle to website usability.

11. Do you provide timely content? If you are a publisher, do you make the latest and freshest content clear

and easy to find? If you are offering a special promotion, is it prominently displayed?

12. Do you weight your home page elements according to importance? Is every element on your home page the same size and treatment? If so, are you sure you are not paralyzing your site visitors? Are you sure that your home page is scan-able (see above)? Allocate different weights to the different elements on your home page to ensure the page is guiding visitors in line with your business priorities.

13. Why should I trust you? Many site visitors have no clue who you are, yet they always have options for going elsewhere on the web. Therefore, it’s critical to convey a sense of trust. This can include trustmarks such as from the Better Business Bureau, association membership logos, associated charity logos, a link to your privacy policy, etc.

14. Do you include clear Calls to Action? Does your home page clarify what the site visitor is supposed to do next, whether learn more, download, view a comparison table, purchase or otherwise?

15. Where’s the pizazz? Your site visitors are real people. Don’t bore them to tears. Add pizazz to your home page, but realize that this does not mean bells and whistles. Focus on delivering a deeply satisfying experience. This could mean an insightful solution to their biggest problem, an amazing client testimonial, a free widget, a free book, a community or a resource center. These are just a few tips to help you create a great website that drives your business success. If you need additional help, let me know at www.startupnation.com or at www.WebsiteMarketingNOW.com. Thanks!

like these that make a real difference in the lives of our auto communities and workers.” Floor plan financing is a line of credit that allows dealers to borrow against their inventory, and then repay that debt as they sell their inventory or borrow against the line of credit again to add new inventory. Under the DFP pilot program, the SBA will provide loan guarantees for lines of credit through its 7(a) program. DFP loans will be made through SBA lenders only for titleable inventory, including autos, RVs, manufactured homes, boats and motorcycles. The pilot program will begin July 1 and will be available through Sept. 30, 2010, at which time the SBA will make the determination of whether or not to extend the program. DFP loans will be available for a minimum of $500,000 up to the $2 million allowable under the 7(a) program. With a maximum repayment term of five years, the loans will come with a 75 percent government guarantee. Borrowers will also benefit from the temporary elimination of fees on 7(a) loans made possible by the America’s Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

During a roundtable discussion later in the afternoon with local small business owners Mills provided information on other SBA loan programs and benefits provided by the Recovery Act. Specifically, small business owners can take advantage of higher government guarantees on some 7(a) loans, as well as reduced fees on both 7(a) and 504 loans. The agency is also providing more tools to help small businesses compete for federal government contracts, along with technical assistance and counseling for business owners and entrepreneurs to help them deal with the economic challenges they face. ““We are committed to being the real partner small businesses need at this critical time,” Mills said. “Floor plan financing is just the latest tool in our toolbox to help small businesses in communities like Kokomo weather this recession and drive our nation’s economic recovery.”

Open Supplier Certification Process The Verizon Communications Corporation is seeking to identify a greater share of African American-owned and operated businesses to match to potential operating contracts. The data base that Verizon procurement management personnel are instructed to review is the California Public Utilities Commission Clearinghouse. BBA members wanting to expand market opportunities with a telecommunication company should consider completing a supplier certification application. To obtain an application go to the Internet web address www.cpuc.gov and visit the supplier diversity page for an online application. The BBA encourages all members to participate in this process that works to create greater opportunities for all African-American owned and operated firms. Last year the California Verizon Company reported an annual spend with African American owned suppliers in excess of $40 million.
