Commerce Department Establishes New Trade Finance Advisory Council

T

he U.S. Department of Commerce has announced the establishment of the U.S. Department of Commerce Trade Finance Advisory Council (TFAC). This federal advisory committee will advise the Secretary on the development of strategies and programs that would help expand access to trade finance for U.S. exporters. The work of the TFAC will focus on the following objectives: • provide a necessary forum to facilitate the discussion between a diverse group of stakeholders such as banks, non-bank financial institutions, other trade finance related organizations, exporters, and relevant U.S. government agencies to gain a better understanding regarding challenges facing U.S. exporters in accessing finance; • draw upon the experience of its members in order to identify innovative solutions to these challenges; and • develop recommendations on programs or activities that the Department could incorporate as part of its export promotion and trade finance education efforts.

Despite current private and public sector engagement in financing U.S. exports, access to capital continues to be a key obstacle for U.S. exporters, especially SMEs; which represent 98% of all U.S. exporters but only 35% of U.S. export revenue. The current global trade slowdown has highlighted the severity of this trade finance gap and the need for concerted solutions. Expanding access to finance for U.S. exporters is one of the five pillars of the Administration-wide National Export Initiative/NEXT strategy, designed to respond to exporter needs in the delivery of trade information and assistance. Access to finance, from both public and private sources, also is an essential component to achieve the Commerce Department’s strategic goal of promoting growth

President's Export Council through the expansion of U.S. exports. In line with this objective, the President’s Export Council’s recent recommendations highlighted the need for programs at all levels of government to expand access to finance for SMEs and emerging growth businesses. Achieving such a goal requires bringing together the perspectives from all stakeholders involved to obtain balanced and comprehensive insights. The Trade Finance Advisory Council will provide such a forum and the opportunity for public input in the development of strategies which Commerce can use to enhance its mission and better educate U.S. exporters on how to access capital to support their transactions. The TFAC will be comprised of up to 20 private-sector individuals, appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to serve for a two-year term. The public announcement of the TFAC’s establishment, membership criteria, and other details can be found in the Federal Register at www. federalregister.gov/articles/2016/07/25/2016-17436/ us-department-of-commerce-trade-finance-advisorycouncil-establishment. USTDA Accepting Proposals For Clean Energy Projects in Africa through September 26

T

he U.S. Trade and Development Agency is expanding its investments in sustainable energy projects across subSaharan Africa. An implementing agency of both the Power Africa and U.S.-Africa Clean Energy Finance (US-ACEF) initiatives, USTDA invests in project preparation activities designed to generate renewable and gas-fired power, modernize electric grids and increase energy efficiency. The Agency's programs

are available to help African project sponsors prepare bankable clean energy projects. Interested project sponsors in sub-Saharan Africa - or U.S. companies working with African project sponsors - should submit an initial proposal (not to exceed five pages) to USTDA no later than Monday, September 26, 2016 at 5:00pm Eastern Time to be considered for funding. To get further information and begin the proposal process, please contact PowerAfrica@ustda. gov. Proposals will be considered for funding under both Power Africa and US-ACEF.

Power Africa is a U.S. government-led initiative

that addresses one of the most pressing challenges to sustainable economic growth and development in sub-Saharan Africa: access to electrical power. President Obama launched Power Africa to bring together technical and legal experts, the private sector and governments from around the world to increase the number of people with access to power. Power Africa aims to increase installed power capacity by adding more than 30,000 megawatts of cleaner, more efficient electricity generation capacity and 60 million new home and business connections. USTDA's investments under Power Africa provide critical earlystage support to advance new power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure US-ACEF is a U.S. State Department-funded program that aligns U.S. government resources to support significant private sector investments in African clean energy infrastructure. Under this program, USTDA is leveraging its project preparation expertise to support clean energy projects in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as coordinating with the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation to link renewable energy projects to sources of financing. 

Addressing Climate Change and Unleashin Innovation with Cleaner Trucks By BY Gina McCarthy, Secretary Anthony Foxx

EPA Administer Gina McCarthy and Secretary of Transportation Anthony Fox sign "Phase 2" of the Climate Action Plan that will reduce emissions and promote fuel efficiency for medium and heavy duty vehicles.Tom Pennington/Getty Images

I

n 2013, President Obama announced his Climate Action Plan, a bold plan that is now on track to reduce emissions from nearly every sector of our economy. Today, we are fulfilling one of the central promises in this plan — finalizing the second phase of greenhouse gas emissions and fuel efficiency standards for medium and heavy duty vehicles for model years 2018 and beyond. The trucking sector is an engine of the U.S. economy. It hauls about 70 percent of all freight in this country, and is also our nation’s second largest segment of U.S.

transportation in terms of emissions and energy use. Today’s final standards will promote a new generation of cleaner and more fuel efficient trucks. That means 1.1 billion fewer tons of CO2 will be emitted into the atmosphere, and operators will save 2 billion barrels of oil and $170 billion in fuel costs. The additional cost of a new truck will be recouped within 2-4 years, saving truck owners more over the long haul. These standards will not only benefit our climate, but also modernize America’s trucking fleet, cut costs for truckers, and help

ensure the U.S trucking industry is a global leader in fuel efficient heavy duty vehicle technology. We developed the standards to allow multiple technological pathways to compliance, so that manufacturers can choose the technologies they believe are right for their products, their customers, and the market. As with every rule, we relied on the input from the public, industry and many other stakeholders to build something that is both ambitious and achievable. More than 400 stakeholder meetings helped improve this program from the proposal: reducing more tons of

ng

pollution, strengthening compliance to ensure that the standards get real emissions reductions and improved fuel efficiency, and increasing flexibility for small businesses and manufacturers throughout the industry. We also continued our close collaboration with our partners in California throughout the process to ensure we finalized standards that will result in a truly national program. We’ve put in place strong engine standards, which are critical because they help ensure that manufacturers implement engine technologies that continue to improve. Our detailed technical analysis based on the most recent data shows that the required five percent efficiency improvement in diesel engines by 2027 is feasible, cost effective, and will lead to the continued carbon emissions reductions we need—millions

of tons of reductions. We heard concerns about the stringency of engine standards, and we took that into account. To ensure a smooth transition, the engine standards are designed with substantial lead times, a gradual phase-in over the course of nine years, and expanded emissions credit flexibilities that allow manufacturers to tailor their own phase-in schedule. All this will enable manufacturers to develop and implement technologies that ensure reliability, and that are sound investments for the trucking industry. And for the first time, the rules will cover trailers as well as tractors—ensuring that innovation will continue into aerodynamic features, next generation tires and other features so that trailers can contribute to fuel and emissions savings. The rules don’t just cover linehaul trucks. They will ensure that

buses that carry school children and commuters, vehicles like snowplows, garbage trucks and delivery vans that travel our city streets, and even heavy-duty pickup trucks and large passenger vans will all be cleaner and more fuel efficient over the next decade. Medium and heavy duty trucks help drive the American economy. Today we are ensuring that we drive down carbon pollution and save on petroleum costs from freight transport as the trucking industry continues to innovate, and to play their part in protecting the climate for future generations. To learn more about the final heavy duty standards visit: https:// www3.epa.gov/otaq/climate/regsheavy-duty.htm and http://www. nhtsa.gov/fuel-economy.  https://www.whitehouse.gov/ blog/2016/08/16/addressing-climatechange-and-unleashing-innovationcleaner-trucks

Take the Fair Chance Pledge

A

t its heart, America is a nation of second chances. That’s why the White House is calling on businesses and higher education institutions to invest in their communities and eliminate unnecessary hiring barriers for individuals with criminal records. The White House is building on past efforts by challenging businesses to take on the “Fair Chance Business Pledge,” (www.whitehouse.gov/issues/ criminal-justice/fair-chance-pledge#section-352871) a nationwide call-to-action to accomplish the shared

goal of creating a stronger set of opportunities for people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. “Around 70 million Americans have some sort of criminal record … Now, a lot of time, that record disqualifies you from being a full participant in our society — even if you’ve already paid your debt to society. It means millions of Americans have difficulty even getting their foot in the door to try to get a job much less actually hang on to that job. That's bad for

not only those individuals, it's bad for our economy. It’s bad for the communities that desperately need more role models who are gainfully employed. So we’ve got to make sure Americans who’ve paid their debt to society can earn their second chance.” - President Obama, November 2, 2015 In addition to taking the pledge, your company can make additional commitments to achieve the goals of promoting opportunity for all, eliminating barriers to reentry, and providing meaningful opportunities to succeed for reentering individuals. E x a m p l e s include:

available to individuals with criminal records; • Using reliable background check providers to help ensure accuracy; • Hosting a Fair Chance and Opportunity Job Fair

Taking Action in Your Local Community.

While the focus is on fair chance opportunity, there are other important ways for businesses to contribute this effort, such as: • Supplying tools for success (business clothing, cell phones, internet service, transit cards, or child care services); • Offering support to regional reentry facilities; • Providing mentors to children of incarcerated parents.

We encourage you to share best practices and success stories with other employers (www.whitehouse.

Promote Fair Chance Hiring Practices:

The most i m p o r t a n t contribution businesses can make to this effort is to give a fair chance to all applicants, to ensure that information regarding an applicant’s criminal record is considered in proper context, and to engage in hiring practices that do not unnecessarily place jobs out of reach for those with criminal records. Specifically, you can commit to: • Banning the Box by delaying criminal history questions until later in the hiring process; • Training human resources staff on making fair decisions regarding applicants with criminal records; • Ensuring internships and job training are 15  August 2016  Black Business News  www.blackbbusinessnews.net  1-323-291-7819

NASA Opens Doors to the Public, Offers Free Access to Research By Charlie Osborne The space agency has launched a new portal for the public to access scientific data without parting with a penny.

N

ASA has launched a new portal which will let members of the public access scientific research for free. The US space agency revealed the new platform, the NASAFunded Research Results portal, on August 16, 2016 (www.nasa.gov/open/researchaccess). NASA says the resource "reflects the agency's ongoing commitment to providing broad public access to science data." "At NASA, we are celebrating this opportunity to extend access to our extensive portfolio of scientific and technical publications," said NASA Deputy Administrator Dava Newman. "Through open access and innovation we invite the global community to join us in exploring Earth, air and space." Researchers submitting NASA-funded articles in peer-reviewed journals or papers from conferences now must make their work accessible to the public through NASA's PubSpace (www.nihms.nih.gov/db/sub. cgi). PubSpace is used by the agency to archive scientific work and provide access without paying for a subscription. New papers will now be available within one year of publication for users to read and download. The resource is likely to prove useful to science students and specialists in the field, who otherwise

must often subscribe to paywalled portals or pay hefty fees for journals themselves. However, enthusiasts will also approve the move to make current research more open and accessible. "Making our research data easier to access will greatly magnify the impact of our research," said NASA Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan. "As scientists and engineers, we work by building upon a foundation laid by others." In related news, NASA also opened up registration this week (www.computerworld.com/article/3108659/

robotics/nasa-1m-contest-intent-on-sending-robots-tomars.html) for the Space Robotics Challenge (www. nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/centennial_challenges/ space_robotics/index.html), a design competition for

humanoid robots which could assist astronauts in space. Ultimately, the agency is looking for ideas related to workers on Mars being able to grow their own food, access potable water, and for assistance in construction on the planet.  www.zdnet.com/article/nasa-opens-doors-to-the-publicoffers-free-access-to-research/?ftag=TRE6a12a91&bh id=22879832233920783794305160720838

Send A Message to President Obama

F

or the greater part of our nation's history, the only way to get a message to the President and the White House was to send it by mail. Technology has made new ways of communicating possible. In the 1880s, the White House began receiving phone calls. In 1994, WhiteHouse.gov introduced a way for the public to submit messages online. These days, no matter where you are or what time of day it is, it's possible to connect instantaneously, in real time, to people all over the world. One of our jobs at the White House is to keep up with these new ways of communication. That's why, for the first time ever, you're able to send a note to President Obama simply by messaging the White House on Facebook, the same way you message your friends. Getting a word in with the president has always been one of the White House's most popular citizen services. As President Obama himself has pointed out, "Abraham Lincoln was able to have

regular office hours where people would come and wait outside his office, which was over in the residence." Face-to-face time is a little harder to come by these days, but technology makes it possible for anyone with an internet connection to send a message to the President and his Administration. The White House's Messenger bot, a first of its kind for any government the world over, will make it as easy as messaging your closest friends. So, head on over to the White House's Facebook page (www.

and click "Message" to get in touch with the President. Thanks, Jason Goldman, Chief Digital Officer, The White House, @ goldman44.  com/WhiteHouse)

C

hiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to board the cast of Garth Davis’ Mary Magadalene, opposite Rooney Mara in the lead role and Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ. Ejiofor will play Peter, one of Jesus’ 12 apostles and his lead disciple. According to the New Testament, Peter was a fisherman and played a key role, being with Jesus during events witnessed by only a few apostles, such as the Transfiguration. He famously denied Jesus three times, only to be forgiven after the Resurrection. Peter is believed to have been crucified in Rome under Emperor Nero Augustus Caesar — crucified upside

With the boarding of Ejiofor, one of today’s most respected and versatile actors, the assembling talent indicates an edgy, decidedly indie take on the greatest story ever told. It is set to be an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. Production is set to begin this summer for an anticipated release in 2017. Ejiofor will next be seen in Marvel’s keenly-anticipated Doctor Strange opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdams. 

Her next thought: Why haven’t we heard about it before? The evolution of the movie began two years ago, when the producer Donna Gigliotti, who won Katherine Johnson receives an Academy Award for Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama “Shakespeare in Love,” made an offer on the star Janelle Monáe plays Mary book’s rights a day after reading Jackson, a trailblazing engineer Ms. Shetterly’s proposal. who worked at the agency, too. set against the country’s burgeoning civil rights struggles. Desperate to get ahead of the Russians, the nation’s space agency had hired the brainiest people it could find, among them Ms. Johnson, who, in 1937, graduated from college in West Virginia summa cum laude at 18. But, for years at the agency, women often worked in separate rooms from men, and the white women were segregated from the black women, who were known as “colored computers.” Ms. Johnson’s push to be heard by the men — her calculations, once they heeded her, proved invaluable — lies at the film’s narrative core. “This is a female-driven movie about contributions that women really made, to our world, not just our society,” Ms. Spencer said. “That’s a big statement.” Pharrell Williams, who grew up near Hampton, and is obsessed by space, became a producer on the film (other producers on the project include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Mr. Melfi), has written

Ms. Johnson, now 97, received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2016 for her contributions to rocket science. Ms. Johnson, Ms. Henson found, was regal, inward and resolute. “A quiet storm, that’s what I call her,” Ms. Henson said.  By Cara Buckley

The Continuing Fight for the Right to Vote

R

ecently, a panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rebuked the North Carolina legislature for acting with “discriminatory intent” in passing restrictions on the right to vote that “target African-Americans with almost surgical precision.” The decision came as we approach the 51st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act on August 6. Reinforced by similar rulings in the appellate court in Texas and a district court in Wisconsin, the decision is a victory for our democracy and our

Constitution. The voting impediments were passed by North Carolina in 2013 in the wake of the Supreme decision in Shelby v. Holder which struck down the central provision of the Voting Rights Act: the requirement that areas with a history of discrimination gain prior approval from the Justice Department before changing voting regulations. Chief Justice John Roberts, the activist Republican judge, decided to rewrite the law that was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support,

arguing that since we now live in a “post-racial society,” requiring prior approval for voting law changes was no longer justified. The flood of legislation that followed — all erecting barriers to make voting harder for AfricanAmericans in particular — proved the chief justice’s fantasy was a lie. In North Carolina, the legislature acted immediately after the Supreme Court decision came down. Its motivation, the Fourth Circuit panel found, was clear. African-American turnout had surged in 2008 and 2012 (with Barack Obama at the head of the Democratic ticket), nearing parity with the turnout of white voters for the first time. Obama had taken the state in 2008 and lost it closely in 2012. But in 2010, conservative Republicans had taken control of the legislature and the statehouse. The new majority acted aggressively to fend off the threat posed by growing African-American turnout. As Judge Diana Motz, writing for the unanimous panel, summarized, the legislators “requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices. Upon receipt of the race data, the General Assembly enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African-Americans.” The three-judge panel in Richmond, Virginia, unanimously concluded that the law was racially discriminatory, overturning a requirement that voters show photo identification to vote and restoring sameday voter registration, a week of early voting, preregistration for teenagers, and out-of-precinct voting. As Ari Berman, the voting rights expert who reports for The Nation magazine noted, the decision comes after North Carolina’s presidential primary in March provided a troubling indication of what might be expected in the general election — students waiting in three-hour lines, foreign-born U.S. citizens asked to spell their names to poll workers for no reason, and elderly voters born during Jim Crow turned away from

the polls for not meeting the new ID requirements. “The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals exposed for the world to see the racist intent of the extremist element of our government in North Carolina,” exulted the Rev. William Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, on a press call. “The ruling is a people’s victory, and it is a victory that sends a message to the nation.” Dr. Martin Luther King led the movement that culminated in the Voting Rights Act over a half-century ago. He understood that voting was the foundational right of citizenship. To strip someone of the right to vote is to strip them of their place in a self-governing community. In a 1957 speech entitled “Give Us the Ballot,” King argued “So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote I do not possess myself. I cannot make up my mind — it is made up for me. I cannot live as a democratic citizen observing the laws I have helped to enact — I can only submit to the edict of others.” King understood that discriminatory election laws not only hurt minorities or the working poor, they also undermined the legitimacy of our elections and thus of our government. The North Carolina decision and similar decisions in Texas and Wisconsin offer the hope that the courts will act to frustrate at least the most blatant versions of new Jim Crow laws. Those decisions will remove barriers for literally millions of voters.

But the courts can only reaffirm the right to vote. That right is not effective if it is not used. The courts have lowered the barriers in North Carolina and other states. Now the citizens must mobilize and vote in large numbers to exercise the power that they have 

Apple's iPads Open up New Worlds for Oakland Youth

With a few swipes, the tablets on the tables in front of them — a gift from technology giant Apple — open up worlds miles away from this hardened stretch of East Oakland,

East Oakland Youth Development Center. Equal parts sanctuary and springboard, it was founded nearly four decades ago by former Clorox CEO Robert Shetterly to lift the fortunes of a neighborhood overburdened by sky-high rates of poverty, crime and violence. Of the students in this class, about 90% qualify for free lunch and live within blocks of the center. They come here for rare access to opportunity in the form of free afterschool tutoring, college preparation courses, music and arts lessons, health and wellness education programs and the hardwood that such NBA greats as Gary Payton and Jason Kidd once played on. The community center's goal: to give children the same shot at success they would have in wealthier parts of the city. Increasingly, that means the digital literacy they will need to successfully navigate the world. The East Oakland Youth Development Center eventually wants to offer year-round computer classes and coding classes. No critic has been more vocal than Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader who has led the campaign for Silicon Valley to hire more African Americans and Latinos, two groups sharply underrepresented in Silicon Valley tech companies. 265 girls. And, for the first time, 100 boys with the help of travel advocates worldwide will receive passports as well. Spearheaded by travelpreneur Tracey Friley, the project’s goal is to encourage young underrepresented tweens to start down the path to global citizenship early by becoming passport holders and travel ambassadors who ultimately pay it forward by encouraging passport ownership, teen travel and study abroad amongst their peers. According to passport statistics, less than 39% of Americans hold a U.S. passport and study abroad statistics indicate that only 25% of underrepresented youth (8.3% Hispanic/Latino American; 7.7% Asian/Pacific Islander; 5.6% African-American; 3.6% Multiracial; 0.5% American Indian/ Alaska Native) make up the study abroad population. In line with Diversity Abroad and the Institute of International Education’s #GenerationStudyAbroad initiative, The Passport Party Project aims to make a difference in both passport and study abroad stats in its own way by shifting the global mindset of teens in their formative years so that they are prepared for international travel and ultimately,

the global marketplace. To date, Passport Party Project passport scholarship applicants have hailed from cities like Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, and passport gifts have come in from as far away as Beijing China and Toronto Ontario with even more world travelers being encouraged to give via Friley’s social media channels as well as those social media channels of Passport Party Project advocates. “This is a true grassroots effort for our kids,” says Friley. “Imagine being 11-15 years old and getting your very first passport. Imagine knowing a world traveler who possibly even looks like you bearing that gift. Imagine the global mind shift. Imagine the possibilities. With or without a plane ticket or immediate travel plans in sight, being in possession of a global permission slip changes everything, don’t you think?” Phase 4 opened July 15, 2016 and closes July 15, 2017 or whenever 365 passports have been gifted. Towards the end of Phase 4, any teen girl who obtained her first passport via the #365PassportProject will be in a position to compete to get her first passport stamp on her first trip abroad during a Passport Party

Project trip currently in the works. For more information about The Passport Party Project’s Phase 4 #365PassportProject initiative, please visit www. PassportPartyProject.org. Follow along on Facebook at @PassportParty and Twitter @TraceyFriley #PassportPartyProject.

“Mayor Tom Bradley, The Hidden Olympic Story”

T

By py thomas

he Olympics has long been the world’s host to great feats of athletic excellence. The Games have also been used to create awareness about social issues as well; or to instill a sense of national and cultural pride. Over the years, the Olympic Games have had some great leadership, and some not so great leadership. However, former Los Angeles Mayor, Tom Bradley was one of the “positive” exceptions to the rule. He, Peter Ueberroth, Dr. William (Bill) Burke and others, all played major roles in bringing

the 1984 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles. Each of them made decisions early in life that would define what a true champion is, for decades to come. One of the personality traits of Bradley that I strongly admire was his focus and determination. Bradley along with the others was an Olympic team on their own merit - they were in essence the men behind the scenes getting the job done. They were the real “Dream Business Team” of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Tom Bradley's story and legacy should never be forgotten. He

will be remembered for many achievements, but the one of which he was the most proud was his tireless campaign, against discouraging opposition, to bring the games of the XXIII Olympiad to Los Angeles. The success of the 1984 Summer Games was perhaps the most glorious hour in Los Angeles history, which elevated the city to new status as one of the truly international cities of the world. All agreed that he was the man who led the campaign, along with a powerful Organizing Olympic Committee, headed by prominent Los Angeles

attorney John Argue, to bring the Olympics to Los Angeles, and was in the end responsible for changing the Olympic movement. Not to be ignored is Peter Ueberroth, who became instrumental in making Bradley’s bid to host the 1984 Summer Olympics a successful reality. Ueberroth led a budget-conscious Olympics planning team. He organized a committee that functioned more like a corporation, dubbing it “LA84.” He created a board consisting of entrepreneurs and other financially savvy leaders. Accordingly, the Games would be funded by unprecedented corporate sponsorships, impressive private fundraising, and, for the first time on U.S. soil, television deals. The committee sold the television rights to the broadcast to ABC for $225 million, raising a large amount of money far in advance of the Games. Subsequently, Ueberroth

was named Time's “Man of the Year.” (Note, neither Bradley nor Ueberroth were named “I Am the Victim of the Year.”) At the end of the day, we can all learn a valuable lesson from the Olympic athletes, and former Mayor, Tom Bradley, which is that a non-victim mentality will give the incentive to work hard. Faith + Hard Work = Results. We have much work to do to develop and sustain economic empowerment in our communities. Now that the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics have concluded, let us continue in our diligence to avail our time and resources to be supportive of other important initiatives that will directly impact our communities. There has never been a greater climate and opportunity for Black business owners to continue to build on the momentum laid by former Mayor Tom Bradley, and the Black

Business Association (BBA), headquartered in Los Angeles, California under the leadership of Earl “Skip” Cooper, II, and many others. 

Delta's New Business Class will Debut in September 2017 By Katherine LaGrave

elta Air Lines announced its new Delta One suite class, the world’s first all-suite business class, which will debut

D

Delta will progressively roll out the Delta One suite on their Boeing 777 fleet beginning in spring 2018, until the entirety of the fleet—25 Airbus

in fall 2017 on the carrier's first Airbus A350 and feature 32 suites, each with a full-height sliding door. (Emirates and Singapore Airlines offer suites on international first class, but until now this concept was unheard of in business class.) Delta will be the first U.S. airline to "take" delivery of the A350, the jet lag-ending Airbus that will primarily serve routes between the U.S. and Asia and the Pacific that top 12 hours—think Los Angeles to Sydney, which clocks in at 14. Following the debut of the plane,

A 3 5 0 aircraft and 18 Boeing 777 aircraft—have been outfitted with Delta One. In addition to full, flat-bed seats with direct aisle access, each Delta One suite will also have in-suite, customizable ambient lighting; memory foam-enhanced cushions; dedicated stowage compartments for shoes, headphones, and laptops; a universal power outlet and high-powered USB port; and an 18-inch, high-resolution in-flight

entertainment monitor, the largest among U.S. carriers. Even better? Customers won't have to pay any more to fly in the suites than they already do to fly in the Delta One hybrid first/business-class category. “This is a product upgrade, not a price upgrade,” Tim Mapes, Delta’s chief marketing officer, told the New York Times. At present, a roundtrip ticket in Delta One from Los Angeles to Sydney costs roughly $4,000 more than a seat in the main cabin, so this could be a great incentive to upgrade or splurge with those extra miles you have. It's not the first advancement Delta has made in the past few months: Earlier this summer, the airline introduced "innovation lanes" to speed up lengthy TSA delays, and in July, Delta was the first U.S. airline to make in-flight entertainment free for all passengers on domestic flights (United and American shortly followed suit.) Only time will tell if the other U.S. airlines follow suite— oops, we mean suit—on this latest news.  www.cntraveler.com/story/deltagoes-big-with-new-all-suite-businessclass?mbid=nl_081816_Intel&CNDID= 38890654&spMailingID=9376480&sp UserID=MTQ5NTc0OTAyMDYxS0&sp JobID=981483801&spReportId=OTgx NDgzODAxS0

Retiree Confidence on the Rise, EBRI Finds

hile retirement confidence among U.S. workers appears to be stabilizing, confidence among today's retirees continues to climb, finds the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) in its latest Retirement Confidence Survey. Workers who said they were "very confident" in their ability to afford a comfortable retirement rose from 13% in 2013 to 22% last year. In 2016, that percentage leveled off at 21%. However, the percentage of retirees who are "very confident" continued to rise in 2016 to 39%, up from 18% in 2013. Historically, retiree confidence has exceeded worker confidence, said the report.

Worker perceptions vs. retiree realities

Each year, the study reveals findings that compare worker expectations and perceptions with the actual experiences of current retirees. For example: • While 78% of workers are at least "somewhat confident" that they will have enough money to afford basic expenses in retirement, an even higher percentage (84%) of current retirees feel that way. An even sharper contrast emerges when considering the affordability of medical expenses. Thirty-eight percent of workers say they are "not too" or "not at all confident" in their prospects for funding medical care, while just 21% of retirees share that level of concern. • The age at which workers expect to retire has crept upward through the years, while the actual retirement age for retired respondents has changed very little. In 1991, just 11% of workers said they expected to retire after age 65. In 2016, the percentage increased to 37%. By comparison, the actual percentage of retirees who retired after age 65 was 8% in 1991 and rose to 15% in 2016. The median age at which retirees said they retired held steady at age 62 throughout the 25-year period. • Only 8% of today's workers said they plan to retire 38% of retirees say their current expenses are "somewhat higher" or "much higher" than before age 60, yet they expected when they first retired, while the same percentage said their expenses are 36% of today's retirees left the workforce "about the same" as they expected 56  August 2016  Black Business News  www.blackbbusinessnews.net  1-323-291-7819

before reaching that age. Why the difference? The study's authors said that each year they discover a sizable percentage of retirees who retire earlier than planned--46% in 2016. Reasons cited include health problems or disability (55%), changes at their company such as downsizing or closure (24%), and having to care for a family member (17%).

Despite these findings, workers can take heart knowing that today's retirees feel more confident than in past years, and in knowing that the years ahead offer time to modify their retirement planning strategies if necessary.

About the survey

The 26th annual Retirement Confidence Survey was cosponsored by EBRI, a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research organization that focuses on health, savings, retirement, and economic security issues; and Greenwald & Associates, a Washington, DC-based market research firm. The survey was conducted in January and February 2016 through 20-minute telephone interviews with 1,505 people, including 1,000 workers and 505 retirees. Full results can be viewed at ebri.org. The United States will host the fifteenth annual U.S.-sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum, commonly known as the AGOA Forum, on September 26, 2016, at the U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C. The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is the U.S. government's signature trade initiative with sub-Saharan Africa. The AGOA legislation mandates the annual AGOA Forum to foster close economic ties between the United States and its partners in sub-Saharan Africa. This year’s theme is “Maximizing AGOA Now while Preparing for the Future Beyond AGOA.”

Quote of Note

“…At a time when women are increasingly the breadwinners in our households, paying them less makes it harder for families to cover the necessities like child care or health care, just to pay the bills. It makes it harder for a family to save, harder for families to retire. It means local businesses have customers with less money to spend. So it’s not good for our communities. It’s not good for our families. It’s not good for our businesses. What kind of example does paying women less set for our sons and daughters?”

'Cleveland Hustles' is Compelling, with a Heck of a Cause By Kevin Kleps

N

BA superstar LeBron James and longtime friend and business partner Maverick Carter give four aspiring local entrepreneurs the chance to realize their dreams while also helping to revitalize a neighborhood in Cleveland. The reality show, which debuted on CNBC on Wednesday night, gives four local entrepreneurs the chance to set up a storefront in the Gordon Square Arts District. To get there, a business has to beat out another entrepreneur in a series of challenges outlined by one of four investors — Kumar Arora, Kathy Futey, Alan Glazen and Jonathon Sawyer. On Wednesday night, (spoiler alert!) Glazen, who seemed genuinely tortured by the decision, selected the Cleveland Bagel Co. over Styles of Success. Glazen — a former ad man who later founded Glazen Urban, which says it strives to develop “promising inner city areas as both a profitable and a philanthropic organization” — helped to make the debut episode a compelling watch, but it was Chareen Fountain who stole the

show. Fountain had to rebuild her salon, which is located at 6524 St. Clair Ave., around the corner from its previous spot after a 2011 fire that she says was caused by copper thieves. She eagerly sought the advice of Glazen and the other investors, and she seemed thrilled every time she got to interact with Bonin Bough, the show’s host and a well-known media executive. Glazen’s decision made a ton of sense, since Cleveland Bagel Co. already has quite a following locally, and because of the likelihood that it would thrive in a new storefront. The company’s owners, Geoff Hardman and Dan Herbst, were also interesting subjects, especially when they were trying to figure out how to balance the challenge — having 48 hours to create a popup store in Gordon Square — while maintaining their current business, which is essentially a two-man operation. Our only qualm with the first episode: It didn’t seem like a fair fight. Cleveland Bagel Co. was asked to produce $400 in sales at its popup store. Hardman and Herbt nearly doubled that. Fountain, meanwhile, had to sign up 12 stylists for her one-day popup.

When six of the 12 wound up being stylists with whom she currently works, Fountain lost the competition. But, thanks to the show, those efforts shouldn’t be for naught. Wednesday’s broadcast generated a lot of interest locally, and CNBC’s website has profiles on each of the eight businesses that were chosen to compete. Six more companies will be featured in upcoming episodes: Old City Soda, Randy’s Pickles, The Proper Pig, Groundswell, FOUNT and Akron Honey. Aside from his introduction of the show, James didn’t appear in the premiere, but a CNBC teaser indicates he will have more of an on-air role in future episodes. More importantly, this is a show that is trying to produce tangible results: investments in businesses, with the goal of creating jobs and helping a neighborhood. It’s way too soon to know if any of this will work, and if “Cleveland Hustles” will generate much of an audience outside Northeast Ohio, since it is so Cleveland-centric. But it’s fun and has good intentions — two qualities that aren’t usually paired when it comes to reality TV.  www.crainscleveland. com/article/20160825/ BLOGS06/160829913/clevelandhustles-is-compelling-with-a-heck-ofa-cause

Kobe Bryant teams up with U-M Ross alums as part of $100M Venture Fund By Martin Slagter

A

pair of University of Michigan Ross School of Business alums is teaming up with recently retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant as part of his new $100 million venture fund started in partnership with entrepreneur Jeff Stibel. Among the list of investments made public by Bryant on Monday, Aug. 23, was a seed capital investment into FocusMotion, a technology company founded by Ross alums Cavan Canavan, MBA '12, and Grant Hughes, MBA '13, according to the Michigan Ross website. The company offers a software development kit that developers can use to track, learn, and analyze human motion "on any sensor, on any OS, on any platform." Bryant's venture fund features another connection to U-M in The Players' Tribune (www. theplayerstribune.com), a media company founded by former New York Yankee star Derek Jeter, according to the Wall Street Journal. The website affords athletes the opportunity to tell their own stories, unfettered by traditional media. Bryant used The Players' Tribune

to announce his retirement. Jeter was the emissary in connecting Michigan and The Players' Tribune in 2015. The company's first all-access deal came with the WNBA's New York Liberty before partnering with Michigan. The agreement between U-M and The Players' Tribune has produced behind-the-scenes photo essays, player surveys, and, most significantly, first-hand stories

written by everyone from U-M football coach Jim Harbaugh to football players like Jabrill Peppers and Jake Rudock. In February, the U-M Athletic Department in partnership with The Players' Tribune, hosted "Signing of the Stars" to celebrate its incoming football recruiting class.  http://www.mlive.com/news/annarbor/index.ssf/2016/08/kobe_ bryant_teams_up_with_u-m.html

Following their time in the rooftop garden, Mrs. Obama and Al Roker headed to the school’s dining room to get a close look at the AeroFarm growing system, where the students grow greens that are incorporated into the school lunches. It was a great day with inspiring students who were clearly proud to celebrate and showcase their impressive gardens and school programs. A Page From Our American Story By Lonnie Bunch, Museum Director

hen President Barack Obama speaks at the dedication ceremony for the National Museum of African American History and Culture on September 24, 2016, it will mark a historic step forward in the way Americans view our shared history finally elevating the African American experience to its rightful place at the center of our nation's story. Seeing the African American experience presented in its entirety from the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow to the triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement and the election of our nation's first black president will be an eye-opening experience for many visitors. Our nation has always been uncomfortable confronting dark parts of its legacy. But people trust the Smithsonian Institution and consider it a safe space, so it will be easier for visitors to come to terms with this difficult history in

the Museum's setting. By providing a tension between painful and inspiring moments, the Museum will help Americans of every age, race, and background see the African American experience in a new way and find common ground that will lead to better understanding, healing, and reconciliation. This transformative journey will begin before visitors even step inside the Museum. The exterior of the building sets the Museum apart from every other structure on the National Mall, with its beautiful landscaping beckoning visitors to enter, and its shimmering, architecturally dramatic corona reaching up to the heavens. The building’s interior is just as striking, dazzling the eye with features like the imposing Central Hall, the serene Contemplative Court and, of course, the state-of-the art interactive galleries showcasing the Museum's permanent collection and special exhibitions.

The Museum's permanent collection of more than 36,000 historical and cultural artifacts is unmatched in the world and reflects the diversity of the African American story. The 4,000 objects from the collection that will be on view in the Museum's inaugural exhibitions include an entire slave cabin from a South Carolina plantation, child-size shackles and an entire segregated railroad car from the Jim Crow era. There are also unique objects from African American sports heroes, such as Muhammad Ali's robe, and amazing items from black entertainment stars, including James Brown's electric organ. And there are artifacts that celebrate groundbreaking triumphs, like posters from Barack Obama's history-making campaign for president. These amazing pieces of African American history, presented in such a stunning setting, will leave visitors with a strengthened faith in the

And the experience will help to nurture a new generation of activists, engaged citizens who understand that all of us have a personal responsibility to play a role in making America the country we want it to be. As the Museum's Founding Director, I am proud that we are fulfilling a more than century-old dream to build a living monument to people whose experiences and contributions have so often been left out of our national story. And I am proud that as a nation, we are delivering on a sacred promise to so many generations of African American ancestors that we will tell and honor their stories, and celebrate their remarkable perseverance that kept African American culture alive through

hundreds of years of daunting challenges. It is both humbling and empowering to finally reach our goal of creating a national Museum that explores and celebrates the African American story that for so long has been neglected, forgotten, and even actively suppressed. And we could never have reached this day without the steadfast commitment and persistence of so many thousands of Americans who simply would not give up on the dream despite the many obstacles placed in our path. I am especially grateful for the Museum's more than 112,000 folks who have become Charter Members since the membership program was launched in September 2009, whose generosity and leadership have brought us to this historic moment. But while the September 24th Grand Opening will be an important milestone for

the National Museum of African American History and Culture and for every American it will be just the beginning of our journey. When the Museum's doors open, our mission will enter a new phase, as we test new ideas and continue to explore the evolving dynamics of African American history and culture. And everyone who has helped to bring this extraordinary vision to fruition will have a continuing role in charting that course, to give every American a fuller understanding of our shared heritage and help to build a brighter future for our nation.  www.msn.com/en-us/ lifestyle/celeb-style/michelleobama%E2%80%99s-dress-mayhave-looked-simple-but-it-spokevolumes/ar-BBuT1rR?li=BBnb2gg &ocid=mailsignout

New Black Lives Matter Policy Platform: Call For Reparations, End Of Mass Incarceration By Darren Sands

T

he Movement for Black Lives conglomerate will put forth a series of policy goals during August, framing the proposals as an end to the “war on black people.” The platform, which is titled “A Vision For Black Lives: Policy Demands For Black Power, Freedom, and Justice,” outlines a series of very liberal proposals. The group calls for reparations; an end to the death penalty, mass incarceration, and deportations; and added rights for trans people under current civil rights protections in a new policy paper. Movement organizers also call for drastic changes to U.S. educational policy, including free tuition and retroactive forgiveness of federal student loans. A website for the platform went live recently, featuring action items for leaders at the local, state, and federal level, including guidance for groups to act on legislation and key messages. In recent weeks, the movement has come under media scrutiny as a series of police deaths have posed questions about what goals activists have beyond police violence. Organizers said the policy platform offered 40 “comprehensive and visionary” policy demands beyond the subject of police killings of black people that had become

the movement’s calling card. Organizers describe the policy paper as the result of a yearlong process by the United Front of organizations and the Movement for Black Lives Policy Roundtable, that drew on the expertise of local and national organizations and hundreds of others “through research, surveys, convenings and national calls” a spokesperson said. The groups include: • Alliance for Educational Justice, • Baltimore Bloc, • BIG: Blacks in Green, • Black Alliance for Just Immigration, • Black Leadership Organizing Collaborative, • Black Women’s Blueprint, • Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100), • BlackBird, • The BlackOut Collective, • Center for Media Justice, • Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, • Dignity and Power Now, • Dream Defenders, • Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, • Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota, • Freedom Inc., • Highlander Research and Education Center, • Million Hoodies Movement for

Justice, • National Black Food and Justice Alliance, • Open Democracy Project at Crescent City Media Group, • Organization for Black Struggle, • Organization for Black Struggle, • Philadelphia Student Union, • Project South, • Southerners On New Ground, • SpiritHouse Inc., • The Worker’s Center for Racial Justice.

“In recent years we have taken to the streets, launched massive campaigns, and impacted elections, but our elected leaders have failed to address the legitimate demands of our Movement. We can no longer

wait,” a release reads. Movement organizer's six key demands are detailed in the platform. They include ending the “war” on black people; a reparations program; investments in education and health, changes to parts of the criminal justice system that adversely affect blacks, community control of neighborhoods and increased political power. The platform has a list of endorsing organizations. They include: • Black Liberation Collective, • Million Women March Cleveland, • National African American Reparations Commission, • National Conference of Black Lawyers NYC;

• National Economic & Social Rights Initiative, • New York State Prisoner Justice Network, • ONE DC, and • The Truth Telling Project.

It is also a platform that nods to the global struggle for justice. “We also stand with descendants of African people all over the world in an ongoing call and struggle for reparations for the historic and continuing harms of colonialism and slavery,” the statement reads. “We also recognize and honor the rights and struggle of our Indigenous family for land and self-determination.” “We are dreamers and doers and

this platform is meant to articulate some of our vision.” 

F

or 27 years, Africa International House (AIH) has brought the African Diaspora to the U.S. with their unique cultural celebration, the African Festival of the Arts (AFA). Held each Labor Day weekend in Chicago, the Festival offers a glimpse into the many unique treasures of the African Continent as well as Afro-centric offerings from across the globe. This year's event will take place Labor Day weekend, September 2–5, in historic Washington Park. The theme of this year's festival is Ruwadzano, which means 'togetherness' in the East African language of Shona in Zimbabwe. During this year's event, AIH will recognize the impact of togetherness in relationships, business and service to the community by recognizing those who embody the concept. This year's Grand BaBa is WGN's Robert Jordan and the Grand YeYe

is Diane Dinkins-Carr. The African Festival of the Arts is one of the largest and longestrunning festivals in the Midwest focused on African art and culture, and each year draws tens of thousands of people to Washington Park. The AFA is a four-day immersion into African culture and heritage as Chicago's historic Washington Park is transformed into an authentic African village. Over 300 vendors and artisans will present artifacts, textiles, traditional crafts, and museum-quality art. Enjoy the African-influenced food, music and dance traditions during an entertainment-rich, familyfocused celebration unlike any other in the Midwest. The Festival boasts five distinct areas each representing a center of culture and commerce on the African Continent: Nubia (fine arts); Kush (wearable arts); Songhay (African arts & crafts, collectibles and natural products); Timbuktu

(African fabric and fashions); and Bank of the Nile (food court). There will be pavilions highlighting South African wines; health & wellness and fine arts. Pavilions include: The Green Pavilion; Quilting Pavilion; David Durojaiye Olupitan African Heritage Pavilion; Author & Book Pavilion; Drum Village; Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Health & Wellness Pavilion; and the Bernice Gardner Children's & Family Pavilion. Master African drummer, Olu Shakoor, is the founder and conductor of the African Drum Village and specializes in both traditional and contemporary styles of African Drumming, but excels in the Djum-DJum and Djembe Drum. For sampling the tastes of Africa, patrons can dine on dishes in the tradition of Nigeria, Senegal and the Caribbean, as well as Cajun and Southern Soul cuisine. However, the real stars of the Festival are the fine arts and the artists who create them—be they painters, sculptors, jewelers, or wood carvers. Founded by Liberian-born business leader P. Saingbey K. Woodtor, the African Festival of the Arts has become a national destination point for those seeking to immerse themselves in the African culture. Each year, over 200,000 people attend the four-day event from across the U.S. Woodtor founded the African Festival of the Arts as an outgrowth of his art shop, Windows to Africa, and he, along with his board of directors, have grown the event into a Labor Day staple. In all these ways, the Festival gives attendees a glimpse of Africa without the need for plane tickets and for less than the cost of applying for a passport. George E. Curry, Journalist and Columnist, Dead at 69 By Denise Hollinshed

G

eorge E. Curry, a journalist whose weekly commentary appeared in African-American newspapers across the U.S., including the St. Louis American, died Saturday (Aug. 20, 2016) at a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area. He was 69. A cause of death was not immediately available. Mr. Curry’s career included reporting for the Post-Dispatch in the 1970s and early ’80s. He eventually rose to become a leading civil rights voice as editor of Emerge magazine. During his tenure, the magazine received more than 40 journalism awards. In 1976, he was among journalists who helped found the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists. And in 1977, Mr. Curry started the St. Louis Minority Journalism Workshop, which is credited with helping launch the careers of many African-American journalists. Larry Starks, an ESPN editor who served as assistant managing editor of sports for the Post-Dispatch until 2007, called Mr. Curry “a giant in this profession.” “The role he played in diversifying newsrooms cannot be overstated. He was an uncompromising voice for journalists of color and such a great mentor,” Starks said. Dr. Donald M. Suggs, publisher and executive editor of the St. Louis American, credited Mr. Curry with helping him “develop a plan for building a newspaper in St. Louis.” “George was extremely helpful to me as a role model

and his involvement and creation of the Association of Black Journalists in St. Louis,” Suggs said. Kenneth J. Cooper, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author who worked at the Post-Dispatch in the late 1970s, said via email: “George made enduring contributions to journalism and African-Americans. “He was bold, aggressive, and opinionated. He aspired to excellence as a journalist and demanded it from his young charges in journalism workshops. He was intimately connected to the AfricanAmerican community wherever he lived and to its national leadership, without ever compromising his high journalistic standards and personal integrity.” Yvonne Samuel, a former news reporter for the Post-Dispatch, said Mr. Curry was an extraordinary journalist and mentor. “If I was unsure about a lead for a story, he would examine it and assist me in correcting it in a tender, loving caring manner, not typical of newsroom staffers.” George Edward Curry was born on Feb. 23, 1947, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His mother worked as a domestic; his father was a mechanic. In 1966, Mr. Curry moved to New York where he worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for a year. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history

from Knoxville College in 1970, and began his journalism career as a reporter for Sports Illustrated in 1970, the second African-American hired by the publication. Mr. Curry joined the Post-Dispatch in 1972, where he worked as a beat reporter until 1983. In 1983, he joined The Chicago Tribune, and served as the paper’s Washington correspondent and later as its New York bureau chief. He is best known for his editorship of Emerge magazine from 1993 to 2000, and more recently for his work as editor-in-chief for the National Newspaper Publishers Association from 2000-2007 and again from 2012 until last year. Most recently, he was raising money to create an online version of Emerge magazine. The site posted eight articles on Friday (www.emergenewsonline.com).  www.stltoday.com/news/local/ obituaries/george-e-curry-journalistand-columnist-who-worked-in-st/ article_222b9ee8-c513-5a9e-9373451706109f65.html

Doris Jean Garrett (a.k.a “PENNY RICH”), In “CELEBRATION OF LIFE”

Doris Garrett, a longtime member, supporter and volunteer of the Black Business Association (BBA) for over 40 years, recently transitioned, concluding her journey in this life. In response to Ms. Garrett’s passing, Earl “Skip” Cooper II, President and CEO of the Black Business Association (BBA), recently shared, “Over the last 5 years, Doris was always willing to volunteer at the BBA events and to help in the office. Doris was a very spiritual, committed individual. She was a real good sister! She always had a smile, was always positive; and always looking for ways to help and serve. I will miss her smile and her kind, giving spirit. She left a footprint of warmth and care wherever she walked.” “As a very young child I knew she was going to do something with her obsession for writing. She always had a pencil and paper in her hands; always found time to read and write. I thought it was odd at times, but later in life it became apparent that she would follow in the father’s footsteps. He left a legacy, the gift of creative writing. His thoughts flowed as poetic expressions with such little effort…just as hers do.”

oris’ independent and people-pleasing personality led her to chose a career in a field typically occupied by men, that of a wallpaper installer. She

thoroughly enjoyed the work, which she found to be both rewarding and creative. In fact, she became known throughout the area as “The Lady Wallpaper Hanger.” Her professional and decorating skills, and her sales ability, made for very lucrative business opportunities. Through her work, Doris was introduced to many of Southern California’s elite, and provided interior decoration for such distinguished residents as heavyweight boxing champions Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton, U.S. Congresswoman Diane Watson, State Senator Nate Holden, Mayor Tom Bradley, legendary R&B/Gospel artist D.J. Rogers, and many others. She later served in the capacity of a personal assistant to Academy Award winning actor, Louis Gossett, Jr. Eventually, Doris accepted a job in the corporate world, and became the wallpaper department manager for the then Expo Design Center in Westwood. After retirement, Doris served as a live-in caregiver and publicist for her dear friend, Jack Nightingale. She later qualified as a certified caregiver for her ailing

mother, Laurriet, a job that also gave her the time and flexibility to write out her thoughts. Doris wrote and self-published several “Mind-Body-Spirit” books touting the benefits of holistic living. In 2012 she released “Children Owe Karma Too! Nine Karmic Clues to Raising Children”, “Archangel of the Earth Realm”, and “Ear Candler’s Manual: Pamper Your Ears with Fire”. Doris Jean Garrett is survived by her 101-year old mother Laurriet, her twin sister Shellie, her younger brother Byron, and baby sister Patricia, her daughters Siedah and Cynthia, her granddaughter Qiuamma, and her greatgrandchildren Miyo and Takashi. USTDA Trade Lead: South Africa - Global Logistics Service Provider for Container Terminal Project

Compulsory Briefing Session: July 6, 2016 (Johannesburg) Proposal Deadline: September 30, 2016 Background: Transnet, a South African state-owned freight logistics company, recently issued a request for proposals for the design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and eventual handover of an inland container terminal in Tambo-Springs. The objective of the project is to migrate rail-friendly cargo off the country's road network. The Tambo-Springs terminal will be located east of Johannesburg, in Ekurhuleni along the N3 motorway, near the Johannesburg-to-Durban rail corridor. The proposed terminal is an integral part of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Committee's Strategic Integrated Project 2, which aims to advance the country's industrial development while boosting export capability. The project is designed to complement Transnet's five existing inland container-handling terminals in the province. The concession will be for a 20 year period and features the greatest participation from the private sector that Transnet has ever seen. Transnet is seeking a global logistics service provider that can demonstrate technical expertise, maintain a minimum of Level 4 broadbased black economic-empowerment status with a commitment to reach Level 2 by the third year of operation, and abide by the requirements for supplier development and skills transfer. Women's Entrepreneurship Fund By Catherine Cheney

K

iva (www.kiva.org) partnered with the United States Department of State and the Inter-American Development Bank (www.iadb.org) to launch the Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund, signaling the next step in the crowdfunding platform’s ongoing expansion into impact investing. 70% of small and medium enterprises owned by women in emerging markets are underserved or unserved, leading to a $260 billion to $320 billion credit gap for women, according to the International Finance Cooperation (www.ifc. org). Despite the odds, women reinvest 90% of their incomes in their families and communities. “We see time and again with

Kiva that the most impactful, high leverage, accelerated way to change the world more positively is by getting money directly into the hands of women, and particularly women entrepreneurs,” said Julie Hanna, Kiva’s board chair. The fund — which aims to enable 1 million women entrepreneurs to access loans ranging from $450 to $100,000 over the next five years — will match dollar-for-dollar what citizen lenders give to women entrepreneurs through the Kiva.org website. The fund was born of a conversation in July at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (www. ges2015.org) in Nairobi, Kenya, when Hanna, who is also a

presidential ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, met Catherine Russell, ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues at the U.S. Department of State. “The value of this partnership from my perspective is everybody brings their skills to the table,” Russell told Devex. “There is no way the U.S. government could do what Kiva does.” The State Department will invest in data collection and analysis on the size and purpose of loans and whether women come back for additional loans, Russell said. This is in response to the lack of decent data, including data on see Entrepreneurship Fund on page 102

entrepreneurship disaggregated by gender, which makes it more difficult to work to support regulatory changes and empower banks to find new ways to finance female entrepreneurs. The Inter-American Development Bank Group’s Multilateral Investment Fund (www. fomin.org) brings to the partnership its expertise with regulatory issues and its ability to provide technical assistance to women entrepreneurs. Its participation also helps insulate the partnership from any changes that may result from new U.S. government leadership. The Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund was appealing to Kiva not only because of the impact it could have, but also because of the way it fits in with how the organization is evolving, Shah said. The original innovation of Kiva was making microfinance easy, but as the organization learned that the impact of microcredit was not as great as it once thought, many changes were set in motion. The organization started looking at larger loans for small and medium enterprises and encouraging microfinance institutions to think

about new loans products such as student loans and clean energy loans. Ongoing conversations include questions about whether Kiva lenders might add value in areas beyond money, such as mentorship. “Kiva is crowdfunding meets impact investing,” Premal Shah, Kiva’s co-founder and president, told Devex. “If this model works, then it can actually tell the rest of the impact investing space, as well as just the commercial investing space, this thing can not only help people, but make a lot of money.”

of smaller donors and that money recycled over the course of three years. Kiva is uniquely positioned to provide that kind of impact and this fund is part of its effort to help address the pioneer gap — or the inability of social entrepreneurs to get impact or commercial investments as they seek to grow, Shah said. Crowdfunding can provide the zero percent interest, risktolerant capital for post-grant, precommercial small and medium enterprises, even those without

Kreyól Essence Shah gave the example of an anonymous donor who put $1 million into Kiva and generated $13 million of impact with only $50,000 in losses as he matched the dollars

a long track record or collateral, that ideally graduate on to impact investors and mainstream investors, he said. “If microfinance is supposed to be

at the edges of banks, Kiva should be at the edges of microfinance,” Shah said. “It’s free, no-risk money to try something that could be impactful and sustainable because that’s the sweet spot we’re going for.” Kiva will rely on its network of more than 300 field partners to identify recipients and administer the loans through the fund, just as it does with the smaller microfinance loans it provides. More than 75% of the borrowers funded on Kiva are women, but as the fund ramps up, the organization will ask those field partners to identify women-owned small and medium enterprises that need larger loans. It’s something Kiva has done before. For example, Yunus Social Business (www. yunussb.com) was a partner for a $100,000 loan to Kreyól Essence (www.kreyolessence.com), a hair and skin care company led by Yve-Car Momperousse in Haiti. The fund is looking to bring in a new group of donors whose contributions will be used to match the smaller contributions of online

lenders. Those big donors, groups or individuals who contribute at least $250,000 will be able to specify a region or sector they want their funds to support and can choose whether to recycle their payments back into the fund or pull their money out after the initial cycle. “What Kiva does is take this pool of money and deploy it into the stream of the crowdfunding platform,” Hanna said. “It’s a way of getting major lenders to maximize their impact. Rather than just putting their money to work, they can use this as a way to recruit new money into the system, which is what the inherent power of the platform is about.” With the fund, the partners want to make sure to reach the rural areas where the credit gap for women is wider than it is in urban areas. We’re seeing a lot of brands incorporate organic products into their line, and new, all-natural brands are popping up every other day. Tell the US Government that North Africa is Africa Too!

oin with and support the United Africa Organization’s campaign to petition the U.S. Department of State to include the whole African continent under its Bureau of African Affairs.

Why?

The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, led by Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson, currently excludes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara from its agenda. Instead, the aforementioned countries are grouped with the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, together with Iran, Iraq, Israel and others. This artificial distinction between North Africa and the rest of Africa

negatively impacts US foreign policy relations throughout the entire continent of Africa. We unequivocally reject the argument that North African countries are outside the scope of African affairs. North Africa is geographically and historically part of the African continent, and all fifty-three (53) independent African states, including North African countries, are represented in the African Union (AU). It would be far more productive for the State Department to engage with the entire continent of Africa, including North Africa, under its Bureau of African Affairs. We are one Africa, from the Cape to Cairo, indivisible and bound together! Therefore, no square inch of African

land should be excluded from African affairs.

Sign The Petition!!!

Go to www.change.org/petitions/ one-africa-tell-us-state-departmentthat-north-africa-is-part-of-africa and sign the online petition to support this important proposition. Next tell everyone you know to sign. 

Books to Consider

Books to Consider... The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist

T

by Neil deGrasse Tyson

his is the absorbing story of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s lifelong fascination with the night sky, a restless wonder that began some thirty years ago on the roof of his Bronx apartment building and eventually led him to become the director of the Hayden Planetarium. A unique chronicle of a young man who at one time was both nerd and jock, Tyson’s memoir could well inspire other similarly curious youngsters to pursue their dreams. Like many athletic kids he played baseball, won medals in track and swimming, and was captain of his high school wrestling team. But at the same time he was setting up a telescope on winter nights, taking an advanced astronomy course at the Hayden Planetarium, and spending a summer vacation at an astronomy camp in the Mojave Desert. E v e n t u a l l y, his scientific c u r i o s i t y prevailed, and he went on to graduate in physics from Harvard and to earn a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia. There followed postdoctoral research at Princeton. In 1996, he became the director of the Hayden Planetarium, where some twenty-five years earlier he had been awed by the spectacular vista in the sky theater. Tyson pays tribute to the key teachers and mentors

who recognized his precocious interests and abilities, and helped him succeed. He intersperses personal reminiscences with thoughts on scientific literacy, careful science vs. media hype, the possibility that a meteor could someday hit the Earth, dealing with society’s racial stereotypes, what science can and cannot say about the existence of God, and many other interesting insights about science, society, and the nature of the universe. Now available in paperback with a new preface and other additions, this engaging memoir will enlighten and inspire an appreciation of astronomy and the wonders of our universe.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159102188X/ref=x_ gr_w_glide_bb_sout?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_glide_bb_sout20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeA SIN=159102188X&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55 XCGG2

Homegoing: A Novel

T

by Yaa Gyasi

he unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery, the other married to a British slaver. Written with tremendous sweep and power, Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history, VYaa Gyasi each life indeliably drawn, as the legacy of slavery is fully revealed in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenthcentury Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with

the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentiethcentury Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.  https://www.amazon.com/Homegoing-novel-Yaa-Gyasi/ dp/1101947136

BEYOND MISEDUCATION: Dis-

Education in American Public Schools is Making Kids Mad! Mad! Mad!

B

by Donna Shannon

EYOND MIS-EDUCATION calls attention to the problem of what the author calls Dis-Education in American public schools. The public school focus on age-appropriate standardized curricula and teaching to a myriad of tests at the expense of adequate access to sports, music and arts participation leaves many children bored, demoralized, and hating school. Teachers have been rebuked for trying to take a creative approach to motivating students. Students— especially the highly gifted—that aren’t motivated by grades but by a simple love of learning are at high risk for underperforming due to being denied appropriate challenge, variety, and the freedom to advance at their

innate pace. Gifted Black students are at the highest risk of educational neglect since the prevailing public school culture does not go out of its way to recognize brilliance in Black children, or the fact that brilliant Black children may need more physical activity, especially when having to sit through classes that are too slow for them. Statistics don’t lie—Black children are grossly over-represented in Special Ed classes, often carrying behavior labels and taking medications to control their behavior (chemically make them sit still and quiet while learning little or nothing, but freeing the school from having to be bothered addressing their unique needs). Part 1 of BEYOND MI S-E DUCATI ON recounts the public school travesty endured by one profoundly gifted Black child; Part 2 quotes information and guidance from highly regarded researchers and the author’s suggestions and encouragement for parents. Packed with documentation, this book was written to bolster parents seeking to become stronger advocates for children that are struggling in rigid traditional school settings, and to encourage parents that are considering homeschooling.  www.amazon.com/BEYOND-MIS-EDUCATION-DisEducation-American-Schools/dp/1517371767/ref=s r_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1470753456&sr=11&keywords=Beyond+Mis-Education
