une is Black Music Month. This month represents the many African Americans that dominate music as artists and performers, and are now moving more into the board rooms and technical directorships of the music we create – because we are the real business behind the music. African Americans continue to carve out a share of the music industry business pie, slice by slice. A sampling of those pioneers and entrepreneurs of the Black Music industry include, Berry Gordy, Ethiopia Habtemariam, Quincy Jones, Russell Simons, Prince, Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Cathy Hughes, L.A. Reid, Sylvia Rhone, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and others. In my role as the Publisher and Editor of the Black Pubisher/Chief Executive Officer Business News Group, I take this opportunity to share with you news about the upcoming Black Business Association "Salute to Black Music," to be held on June 20th in Los Angeles, where Clarence Avant and Lee Bailey will be recognized for their immense contributions to the music industry. This event is historically well-attended by many celebrities from the music and film industries in addition to business and community leaders. Please join them in celebration of the many African Americans who are continuing to forge more pathways into the business side of these industries. It is crucial for us to never stop singing and telling our stories directly from our hearts to our people and others.

We’re half way through the year, and hopefully many, of you have met 50% of your 2017 target goals. As business owners and entrepreneurs, goal-setting is important to starting and growing your business. Successfully built businesses can have a very positive affect on their communities, and in particular African American communities. Our African American business communities and communities in general continue to suffer, but united as proven in times past, we can overcome many of the hurdles we face and will face moving forward. No war is won without a battle, but few are willing to arm themselves with the necessary weapons of economic warfare. As a people, we need to truly arm ourselves with the armor of financial literacy, a serious return to our faith, and a commitment to our families – the foundation of our culture and society. We need to re-learn the importance of supporting each other first as a people. It’s Black history every day, but individually and corporately, we need to think about how to make it “GREAT” Black history. We can’t just settle for being survivors, but must strive to be winners, champions in our own board rooms and family living rooms. So how do we battle the sometimes overwhelming circumstances as Black entrepreneurs and business owners? Statistically Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs are grossly underserved in the area of "access to capital." We get invitations to the dance, but are unfamiliar with the music played at the dance. Financial institutions have the capital to lend, but unfortunately, most Blacks don’t meet the loan qualifications to receive serious financial assistance. The answers lay in better structured credit criteria for access to capital that African Americans do meet. In most instances, African Americans access to credit is limited

THE WHITE HOUSE
African American Music Appreciation Month, 2017 -------
By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation
D
uring June, we pay tribute to the contributions African Americans have made and continue to make to American music. The indelible legacy of these musicians who have witnessed our Nation's greatest achievements, as well as its greatest injustices give all Americans a richer, deeper understanding of American culture. Their creativity has shaped every genre of music, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, hip hop, and rap. In March, rock and roll lost Chuck Berry, one of its founding fathers. Berry's signature style on the guitar, on display in classics like "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Maybellene," and "Carol," came to define the explosive new sound of rock and roll. As Keith Richards, guitarist for the Rolling Stones said while introducing Berry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "This is the Cuck Berry gentleman who started it all." We also take time this month to recognize the musical influence of two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald, as this year Dizzy Gillespie marks their centennial birthdays. Gillespie, through his legendary trumpet sound and Fitzgerald, through her pure, energetic voice, treated people around the world to spirited and soulful jazz music. Their work has influenced countless musicians, and continues to inspire listeners young and old. The contributions of Berry, Gillespie, Fitzgerald, and other African-American musicians shine as examples of how music can bring us together. These musicians also remind us of our humanity and of our power to overcome. They expressed the soul of blues, gospel, and rock and roll, which has so often captured the hardships of racism and injustices suffered by African Americans, as well as daily joys and celebrations. Their work highlights the power music has to channel the human experience, and they remain a testament to the resilience of all freedom-loving people. We are grateful for their contribution to the canon of great American art. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2017 as African-American Music Appreciation Month. I call upon public officials, Ella Fitzgerald educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs that raise awareness and appreciation of African-American Music. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand seventeen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-first. 7 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819

ebates over America’s infrastructure often focus on productivity, growth, and costs, but can sometimes overlook the human dimension of the crisis. Lead-contaminated drinking water in Michigan; dilapidated public schools in Oklahoma; collapsing bridges in Minnesota; flooded cities in Texas; and inadequate and unaffordable housing in every community —each aspect of America’s crumbling infrastructure harms real people and stifles human potential in the world’s wealthiest country. Countless personal stories behind America’s deficient infrastructure
contribute to a staggering economic and social toll. The scope of the problem ranges from the simple annoyance of bumper-to-bumper traffic, which amounts to billions of lost hours every year, to the tragic effect of air pollution, which causes hundreds of thousands of premature deaths annually and devastates the health of low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Government spending on infrastructure as a share of the economy has fallen to a two-decade low, yet for every $1 invested in public-sector infrastructure, our economy would gain $1.70 back
through greater employment and efficiency. A vision for infrastructure that invests our resources in people—a plan that produces millions of family-sustaining jobs, raises living standards, reduces inequality, strengthens education, reduces poverty, and cleans our environment—is more urgent than ever. But President Trump and the Republicans are intent on pursuing the exact opposite approach. The Republican agenda is a sham, hardly investing any new resources into infrastructure while aiming to slash existing federal programs. In reality, President Trump and Congressional Republicans are
8 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
pushing a trillion-dollar corporate giveaway that would create tax incentives for Wall Street to privatize our roads, bridges, sanitation systems, and utilities, while raising tolls, fees, and bills— all through taxpayer subsidies. Even worse, their approach will leave the infrastructure that we depend on in utter disrepair unless it generates a profit for private investors.[1] The Congressional Progressive Caucus presents a real alternative, crafted in partnership with the grassroots: a 21st Century New Deal for Jobs, which aims to do no less than transform the foundations of America’s economy. Drawing on the legacy of President Franklin Roosevelt’s bold vision and adapting it to a modern context, our 21st Century New Deal for Jobs makes Wall Street, big corporations, and the wealthiest pay their fair share in order to put America back to work. It invests $2 trillion over 10 years,
employing 2.5 million Americans in its first year, to rebuild our transportation, water, energy, and information systems, while massively overhauling our country’s unsafe and inefficient schools, homes, and public buildings. Yet the New Deal for Jobs’detailed plan to nurture a vibrant, 21st century economy goes much further than rapidly achieving full employment and sustaining it over a decade. It recognizes that plentiful, dignified jobs are not enough. They must be paired with an agenda that empowers women and communities of color while protecting the planet. Unlike the Republican agenda, a 21st Century New Deal for Jobs puts real money in the pockets of ordinary workers and families. A New Deal for Jobs mandates local hiring in addition to raising the benchmark for locally prevailing wages in each area, increasing infrastructure workers’ paychecks. The proposal further cements its
commitment to working people by prioritizing the hiring of our veterans and demanding robust Buy America provisions in every federal procurement decision for labor and materials. The 21st Century New Deal for Jobs combines strong job and wage growth with the fundamental principles of social and racial justice, targeting employment for those who have been systematically shut out of economic growth. This means that job training and local hiring will reflect the racial and gender diversity of the community’s workforce and those seeking employment. Federal procurement will prioritize minority- and womenowned businesses, cooperatives and employee-owned firms, and community-owned and municipal enterprises. Recognizing the jobcreating power of small businesses, we also aim to increase funds awarded through programs such as see page 10

Historically Underutilized Business Zones. Furthermore, the 21st Century New Deal for Jobs gives precedence to the infrastructure needs of people who are struggling the most. Lower-income people and communities of color coping with elevated unemployment— both rural and urban alike—will play a leading role in determining their own infrastructure gaps and solutions. It also calls for local and regional planning that considers equity of access to transportation across communities. The New Deal for Jobs marks a clear contrast with the infrastructure priorities of Republicans, who promote prisons and militarized border fences. Rather, a New Deal for Jobs improves Americans’ quality of life by removing toxins like lead and asbestos; revitalizing parks and schools; expanding the supply of safe, decent and affordable housing; ambitiously connecting our entire country through affordable high-speed internet and high-speed rail; cleaning our air and water; and shortening our travels in public transit, cars, and planes. Finally, the New Deal for Jobs
invests the necessary resources into averting catastrophic climate change while generating millions of new jobs and positioning the United States as a global leader in the fastgrowing industries and technologies of the future. New smart-grid strategies will revolutionize our outdated electricity transmission system and democratize energy production, promoting clean, carbon-free alternatives. Largescale public financing for energyefficiency retrofits in America’s buildings will drastically minimize waste while saving families money. Crucially, a New Deal for Jobs prioritizes federally funded employment opportunities within this burgeoning new sector for workers and communities who currently depend on fossil-fuel production. A program as sweeping and ambitious as the 21st Century New Deal for Jobs must be guided by an ethos of building smart. Our plan integrates high-quality planning, cost controls, and maintenance into all initiatives while allocating additional human and technical resources to manage community and environmental approval processes. A New Deal for Jobs build-smart philosophy also mandates state-ofthe-art security measures to protect America’s electrical grid, dams,
broadband networks, and other vital infrastructure from cyber- and physical attacks. Americans across the political spectrum are realizing that our country’s infrastructure is in desperate need of overhaul. But the contrast between the Republican vision and our 21st Century New Deal for Jobs could not be starker in either size or scope. The Congressional Progressive Caucus forcefully rejects an infrastructure agenda that wastes tens of billions of dollars on useless projects such as a thousands-of-miles-long border wall that threatens human and environmental safety. The 21st Century New Deal for Jobs lays out, in careful detail, a humane framework for revitalizing our infrastructure in service to the health of our people and planet. Our plan offers a path toward a fairer economy in which we can all thrive. It is proof that our country’s complex infrastructure challenges can be guided by a simple principle: public money should go toward the public good. https://cpc-grijalva.house.gov/21stcentury-new-deal-for-jobs

A
n institute the late U.S. Sen. John Glenn helped envision for promoting professionalism, bipartisanship and civility among elected officials was launched Wednesday in his native Ohio. Its organizers said work began on the State of Ohio Leadership Institute before Glenn's death in December and that it was not a reaction to the tone of Donald Trump's presidency. "Compromise is not a bad thing. Bipartisanship is not a bad thing. Talking with civility is very important," said Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger. "These conversations, believe it or not? Well before the presidential campaign even started in 2016." Rosenberger, a Republican who chairs the National Speakers Conference, said the bipartisan group discussed the importance of giving people elected to office in small and large governments the skills necessary to govern effectively. That includes practical training in areas such as managing public money and guidance on striking political compromise. Ohio State President Michael Drake said the institute is "entirely in line with the way the senator conducted his life." Glenn, a Democrat, spent 24 years in the Senate. "He's one of the few people who actually looked down on us literally, as well as figuratively," Drake said,
referring to Glenn's history-making orbit of Earth in 1962. "He really did see the world as a place, as a whole, that could work together to do a better job." Ohio State University's Glenn College of Public Affairs will house the institute. Dean Trevor Brown said it will fill an important gap by concentrating on legislative rather than executive branch leaders. "It's an area that I have to admit that schools like ours have, to some degree, been neglectful of over the years," he said. "Programs in public administration and public affairs have been very strong contributors to improving the capabilities of government, but primarily on the executive side." Ohio State's program, dating back to 1969, has largely focused on
suggestion that establishing the institute was an effort to provide exlawmakers with a place to land after they lose elections or depart office due to term limits. "That's about the goofiest damn question I've ever heard. No, it's not the intent for it," he said. He added he has no plans to work for the institute himself when he reaches term limits next year. Rosenberger said commonalities discovered among speakers of both parties who were involved in the National Speakers Conference drove the early conversations that led to the institute's founding. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/ leadership-program-envisionedby-john-glenn-launched-in-ohio/arBBDO8V6?ocid=spartandhp

U.S. Administration Adds Social Media History to Foreign Visitor Vetting by Yesaneh Torbati
T
he Trump administration has rolled out a new questionnaire for U.S. visa applicants worldwide that asks for social media handles for the last five years and biographical information going back 15 years. The new questions, part of an effort to tighten vetting of would-be visitors to the United States, was approved on May 23 by the Office of Management and Budget despite criticism from a range of education officials and academic groups during a public comment period. Critics argued that the new questions would be overly burdensome, lead to long delays in processing and discourage international students and scientists from coming to the United States. Under the new procedures, consular officials can request all prior passport numbers, five years' worth of social media handles, email addresses and phone numbers and 15 years of biographical information including addresses, employment and travel history. (bit.ly/2qBSrpv) Officials will request the additional information when they determine "that such information is required to confirm identity or conduct more rigorous national security vetting," a State Department official said on Wednesday. The State Department said earlier the tighter vetting would apply to visa applicants "who have been determined to warrant additional scrutiny in connection with terrorism or other national security-related visa ineligibilities."
President Donald Trump has vowed to increase national security and border protections, proposing to give more money to the military and make Mexico pay to build a wall along the southern U.S. border. He has tried to implement a temporary travel ban on people from six Muslim-majority nations that a U.S. appeals court refused to reinstate, calling it discriminatory and setting the stage for a showdown in the Supreme Court. The Office of Management and Budget granted emergency approval for the new questions for six months, rather than the usual three years. While the new questions are voluntary, the form says failure to provide the information may delay or prevent the processing of an individual visa application. Immigration lawyers and advocates say the request for
15 years of detailed biographical information, as well as the expectation that applicants remember all their social media handles, is likely to catch applicants who make innocent mistakes or do not remember all the information requested. The new questions grant "arbitrary power" to consular officials to determine who gets a visa with no effective check on their decisions, said Babak Yousefzadeh, a San Francisco-based attorney and president of the Iranian American Bar Association. "The United States has one of the most stringent visa application processes in the world," Yousefzadeh said. "The need for tightening the application process further is really unknown and unclear." www.reuters.com/article/us-usaimmigration-visa-idUSKBN18R3F8

Lumumba Wins Jackson, MS Mayor's Race by Donna Ladd

ayor-elect Chokwe Lumumba declared "We have a lot of work to do," when he stepped to the microphone at the King Edward Hotel to acknowledge his overwhelmingly victory over a Republican and several independents. "If you have the best ideas, that's what we're moving with." At 9:20 p.m. with 98% of the vote, Lumumba declared victory at the King Edward Hotel in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, chanting "One City, One Aim, One Destiny!" as he held a clear lead with more than 22,000 votes. His nearest rival, Republican nominee Jason Wells, had fewer than 1,000. Likewise, Lumumba stunned the city on May 2 when he defeated nine Democratic challengers in the primary to avoid a runoff. Lumumba called on supporters to remember that with him voted in as mayor, they were "elected mayor," meaning they still had a lot of work to do. The mayor-elect, who is 34, repeated his pledge not to fire people for political reasons and to make Jackson safe for young children and for senior citizens; Lumumba ended his acceptance speech by saying "I love you all"

So I'm happy to call him an ally; I'm happy to call him a friend. I thank you for that," Lumumba said. Lumumba said that "it won't be a

Germany: e Compact with Africa by Daniel Pelz (im)
existing conditions in many countries will make this difficult to achieve if things do not change. Only130 billion US dollars (115 million euro) a year would be enough to expand African infrastructure – roughly equivalent to the total amount of public aid for the continent. Private investment would hopefully fill this gap and give African countries a head start.
Are there risks involved?
The key pillar of Germany's flagship Africa Partnership G20 project aims to improve economic conditions across the continent in areas like private sector investment. DW takes a look at what this means for Africa. What is the Compact with Africa? According to the German government, the Compact with Africa will work to increase sustainable private sector investment, as well as improving infrastructure and tackling unemployment. In order to achieve this, a number of African countries are partnering with the G20, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Bank to negotiate a specific action plan for each state. The countries would then commit to implementing reforms which would increase their investment potential,
while their international partners would assist with economic issues, offer technical expertise and help lure investors to the region.
Which African countries are involved? Currently the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal and Tunisia have registered their interest with the G20, with more countries likely to follow suit. Compact with Africa is expected to continue following the end of Germany's 2017 presidency, with talks already being held with 2018 president Argentina.
Why is the G20 so concerned about private investment? Africa's population is growing rapidly – by 2050 an estimated 2.5 billion people will live on the continent, almost twice as many as there are now. By 2030, approximately 440 million people will be looking for work. The African economy needs to grow if it is to accommodate this boom. However
One of the prerequisites for the Compact with Africa is that participating African countries will implement their reform promises. For this reason, investors are currently avoiding states which are politically unstable, or where corruption is rampant. It is also unclear exactly how many investors the project will attract. The interest of German companies in Africa remains low, largely due to the fact that there are not enough customers with sufficient money to purchase their products.
What do Africans think? On principle, many believe the Compact with Africa to be a good idea. However they caution that the program should not be applied to the whole continent as it will not function properly in so-called crisis countries. They also want to see investment benefit the population directly, by encouraging fair wages and adhering to environmental standards. In addition, development organizations have long demanded that trade relations between Africa and Europe should operate more fairly. The European Union (EU) has been accused of cutting off imports from Africa, but this can only be remedied with cooperation with EU member states. www.dw.com/en/at-a-glance-thecompact-with-africa/a-39093671

Trump Set to Roll Back Obama Policy on Cuba THE AGENDA By Danny Vinik
P
resident Trump is expected to announce sweeping changes to U.S.-Cuba relations Friday, rolling back some key provisions in the Obama-era decision to open ease diplomatic and business restraints on the communist country. The new Cuba policy will prohibit transactions with businesses controlled by the Cuban regime and will mean some Americans will now have to travel to Cuba as part of an organized tour group if they wish to visit, although many other categories of travel remain. All categories of travel to the island will be subject to an audit. The new policy will reiterate the importance of extraditing fugitives, according to senior administration officials who briefed members of the press Thursday. The changes won't end diplomatic relations with Cuba, re-establish the controversial "wet foot, dry foot" policy, or change the policy on how much rum, cigars and other popular products Americans can take from Cuba. It also won't change the status of the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. The changes won't go into effect
until regulations are issued. That process will take about 30 days to initiate, and then, an unforeseen amount of time from there. "The president vowed to reverse the Obama administration policies towards Cuba that have enriched the Cuban military regime and increased the repression on the island -- it is a promise that President Trump made and it is a promise that President Trump is keeping," one senior administration official said during the briefing. The administration argues restricting transactions with Cuban regime-controlled businesses, including many hotels Americans would normally stay in, will allow money to go directly to the Cuban
people and not the regime. The State Department will create a list of hotels that don't violate that ban, although it's unclear how the ban will be enforced. The most significant change under the new policy, CBS News foreign affairs analyst Pamela Falk says, would be the end of the permitted individual travel called "people to people," which Trump advisors, including Senator Marco Rubio, believe has been used to allow tourist travel. Falk says that by prohibiting transactions with businesses and hotels controlled by the Cuban military and security services, Mr. Trump is looking to economically squeeze the Castro government

EPA Head Sco Prui Reportedly Launching Program to 'Cri que' Climate Science By Aric Jenkins
S
cott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is reportedly launching a program within the department to “critique” mainstream climate science, a senior administration official said, according to reports. The initiative, reportedly set to be coordinated by governmentrecruited experts, will attempt to offer a “back-and-forth critique” of climate science utilizing militarystyle exercises that identify potential vulnerabilities in field operations, according to environmental trade publication E&E News. “The administrator believes that we will be able to recruit the best in the fields which study climate and will organize a specific process in which these individuals … provide back-and-forth critique of specific new reports on climate science,” the official said, according to E&E News. “We are in fact very excited about this initiative,” the official reportedly added. “Climate science, like other fields of science, is constantly changing. A new, fresh and transparent evaluation is something
everyone s h o u l d support doing.” Pruitt, a Senateconfirmed nominee of President D o n a l d Trump, has repeatedly rejected claims of established c l i m a t e change data that has been widelyaccepted by scientists. “I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that it’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see,” Pruitt said on CNBC’s Squawk Box back in March.

Kamala Harris is Every Woman who Stands up to Speak By Roxanne Jones
W
ashington may be a tough town where the big boys roam free, but apparently, freshman Sen. Kamala Devi Harris makes these career politicians nervous.
Educated, experienced and ready to rumble, the senator from California will not be silenced, especially when it comes to getting at the truth in the Russian investigation hanging over Donald
Trump's administration, though that is exactly what her male colleagues want to do: silence her. Again and again during the Senate intelligence committee hearings into Russian interference
20 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
in the 2016 elections, Harris, who is of black and Indian descent, has been reprimanded by her all-white male colleagues for simply doing her job: asking direct questions and expecting direct answers in return. By her colleagues and by pundits, she's been called too tough, too rude, even hysterical by one former Trump campaign adviser. The only senator to be cut off for asking tough questions in these hearings has been Harris, once last week while questioning Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein and then again Tuesday when Attorney General Jeff Sessions was testifying. This reaction to Harris is a double standard. An ugly intimidation tactic applied to working women that should not be tolerated. Not today. Because let's be clear, what really appears to rankle these men is Harris' courage, her confidence in her own skin. She is a woman of color who is not afraid to challenge the status quo. It's for the good of the nation that she refuses to be silent. Harris' questions, though persistent, have never crossed the line of being rude or disrespectful. She doesn't raise her voice or throw around accusations or insults. Not a peep of reproach was heard from men on the committee as her colleague and fellow Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden, accused Sessions of "stonewalling." Other senators also got into tense exchanges. Senators, this is unacceptable.
Michelle Obama
Something tells me that Harris, who served two terms as San Francisco's first female district attorney and then was the first woman elected as California attorney general, has been through this before, maybe her entire career. I know that I certainly have, and frankly it's gotten a little boring. This old "boys club" strategy is familiar: the blatant disrespect and machismo that singles out women, especially intelligent women of color, who insist on being a part of the conversation. Kamala Harris is every working woman who has ever earned a position of power and has not been afraid to use it. She is an inspiration. The way she approaches her career reminds us women that we need not carry the weight of men who have not learned to see us as equals. We cannot allow them to hold us back, or silence us into self-doubt. For me, Harris represents every woman who's ever decided to stand up and be heard, no matter how large or small our platform. She is Sen. Maxine Waters and Michelle Obama. She is Arianna Huffington and Hillary Clinton. She is me. And she is you. Many Americans watching the Senate hearings this week related to Harris' frustrations as Sessions continuously refused to give direct answers. She, like others on the committee, were weary of Sessions' repeated nonanswers of "I don't recall," or, "I don't remember." Harris wanted a "yes" or "no" answer.
Arianna Huffington
Hillary Clinton
Seemingly, less concerned with getting a firm answer than they were with rescuing Sessions, Sens. John McCain (who isn't even on the Senate intelligence committee) and Richard Burr, committee chairman, cut off Harris' questioning. These are not delicate days. Wednesday's tragic politically motivated shooting, which injured GOP Rep. Steve Scalise and four others at a Republican baseball team practice ahead of a charity baseball game, make it seem as if our political divisions grow deeper each day. But we have to hope that some things are still sacred. Surely, we can agree on some general principles of democracy: Russia interfering with a US election can't be tolerated. The possibility that political operatives may have colluded with a foreign government, in any way, must be investigated. And, any possibility that the President of the United States or any of his operatives tried to obstruct justice must be investigated to the fullest extent of the law, no matter how many tough questions it takes to get to the truth. Americans want answers. We want to believe the truth still matters in politics. Kamala Harris is a refreshing, truth-seeking voice. So senators, step aside, stop interrupting and let the woman do her job. https://flipboard.com/@CNN/kamalaharris-is-every-woman-who-stands-upto-speak/f-ba25cae498%2Fcnn.com

Barack Obama Blasts the 'Fundamental Meanness' of Senate Health-Care Bill By Peter Holley · The Washington Post
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced the Senate health-care bill and in the afternoon, former president Barack Obama offered a scathing critique of the bill for its “fundamental meanness.” Here is Obama's argument which was laid out on Facebook (www.facebook.com/barackobama).
for action, on health care or any other issue, must be something more than simply undoing something that Democrats did. We didn’t fight for the Affordable Care Act for more than a year in the public square for any personal or political gain — we fought for it because we knew
Barack Obama, 44th President, United States of America
O
ur politics are divided. They have been for a long time. And while I know that division makes it difficult to listen listen to Americans with whom we disagree, that’s what we need to do today. I recognize that repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act has become a core tenet of the Republican Party. Still, I hope that our Senators, many of whom I know well, step back and measure what’s really at stake, and consider that the rationale
it would save lives, prevent financial misery, and ultimately set this country we love on a better, healthier course. Nor did we fight for it alone. Thousands upon thousands of Americans, including Republicans, threw themselves into that collective effort, not for political reasons, but for intensely personal ones — a sick child, a parent lost to cancer, the memory of medical bills that threatened to derail their dreams.
22 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
And you made a difference. For the first time, more than 90% of Americans know the security of health insurance. Health care costs, while still rising, have been rising at the slowest pace in fifty years. Women can’t be charged more for their insurance, young adults can stay on their parents’ plan until they turn 26, contraceptive care and preventive care are now free. Paying more, or being denied insurance altogether due to a preexisting condition — we made that a thing of the past. We did these things together. So many of you made that change possible. At the same time, I was careful to say again and again that while the Affordable Care Act represented a significant step forward for America, it was not perfect, nor could it be the end of our efforts — and that if Republicans could put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we made to our health care system, that covers as many people at less cost, I would gladly and publicly support it. That remains true. So I still hope that there are enough Republicans in Congress who remember that public service is not about sport or notching a political win, that there’s a reason we all chose to serve in
the first place, and that hopefully, it’s to make people’s lives better, not worse. But right now, after eight years, the legislation rushed through the House and the Senate without public hearings or debate would do the opposite. It would raise costs, reduce coverage, roll back protections, and ruin Medicaid as we know it. That’s not my opinion, but rather the conclusion of all objective analyses, from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which found that 23 million Americans would lose insurance, to America’s doctors, nurses, and hospitals on the front lines of our health care system. The Senate bill, unveiled today, is not a health care bill. It’s a massive transfer of wealth from middleclass and poor families to the richest people in America. It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else. Those with private insurance will experience higher premiums and higher deductibles, with lower tax credits to help working families cover the costs, even as their plans might no longer cover pregnancy, mental health care, or expensive prescriptions. Discrimination based on preexisting conditions could become the norm again. Millions of families will lose coverage entirely. Simply put, if there’s a chance you might get sick, get old, or start a family — this bill will do you harm. And small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks, under the guise of making these bills easier to stomach, cannot change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation. I hope our Senators ask
themselves — what will happen to the Americans grappling with opioid addiction who suddenly lose their coverage? What will happen to pregnant mothers, children with disabilities, poor adults and seniors who need long-term care once they can no longer count on Medicaid? What will happen if you have a medical emergency when insurance companies are once again allowed to exclude the benefits you need, send you unlimited bills, or set unaffordable deductibles? What impossible choices will working parents be forced to make if their child’s cancer treatment costs them more than their life savings? To put the American people through that pain — while giving billionaires and corporations a massive tax cut in return — that’s tough to fathom. But it’s what’s at stake right now. So it remains my fervent hope that we step back and try to deliver on what the American people need. That might take some time and compromise between Democrats and Republicans. But I believe that’s what people want to see. I believe it would demonstrate the kind of leadership that appeals to Americans across party lines. And I believe that it’s possible — if you are willing to make a difference again. If you’re willing to call your members of Congress. If you are willing to visit their offices. If you are willing to speak out, let them and the country know, in very real terms, what this means for you and your family. After all, this debate has always been about something bigger than politics. It’s about the character of our country — who we are, and who we aspire to be. And that’s always worth fighting for.

Google Outlines YouTube Plans to Combat Terrorism By Adario Strange
F
ollowing a wave of terrorist attacks in the UK in recent months, Google's senior vice-president and general counsel, Kent Walker, used one of the leading publications in the country to outline a plan to combat the use by terrorists of Google's tools. On Sunday, Walker posted an oped in the Financial Times that listed four distinct steps Google is taking to fight extremists who harness the power of tools like YouTube to spread their messages. "We will now devote more engineering resources to apply our most advanced machine learning research to train new 'content classifiers' to help us more quickly identify and remove [extremist and terrorism-related videos]," said Walker. "We will greatly increase the number of independent experts in YouTube’s Trusted Flagger programme," Walker continued, offering detail on the changes behind the scenes at YouTube. "We will expand this programme by adding
50 expert NGOs to the 63 organisations who are already part of the programme, and we will support them with operational grants." These initiatives don't just cover technical approaches. The company will now take a modified approach to judgment calls on content in general. "We will be taking a tougher stance on videos that do not clearly violate our policies — for example, videos that contain inflammatory religious or supremacist content; in future these will appear behind a warning and will not be monetised, recommended, or eligible for comments or user endorsements," although this particular measure is no guarantee that such content won't still make it to users, eliminating the monetization of such content may help. "We think this strikes the right balance between free expression and access to information without promoting extremely offensive viewpoints." Lastly, Walker says the company will bolster existing efforts from its
Creators for Change and Jigsaw projects to implement the "redirect method," a program that uses Adwords and YouTube to debunk ISIS recruiting messages online. Google's public stance comes just weeks after UK Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech in which she pushed for more internet regulation as a means to prevent terrorism. In that context, it appears that Google's op-ed is (aside from its purely positive intentions) an attempt to influence UK away from internet regulation that could take more control out of the hands of internet behemoths like Google. To that end, Walker also mentioned that Google is working with Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter to create an international forum devoted to combating terrorist activities online. What this all means for freedom of speech is fascinating to consider: Do you trust curated censoring of some content to be in the hands of internet companies or the government? Both have shortcomings, but Google's op-ed is a clear sign that this is no longer something the internet will "just work out" on its own, regulation is coming, from one side or the other. https://flipboard.com/@flipboard/google-posts-financial-times-op-edoutl/f-6ee4751aa4%2Fmashable.com

3 Ways to Attract the Right Customer Through Facebook Live
I
t's easy to understand why more than four million small businesses use Facebook to build awareness and loyalty and to stimulate sales. Each month, more than 1.6 billion individuals, worldwide, use the social networking service and 400 million use Instagram, the popular photo-sharing service Facebook acquired in 2012. That captive audience also tunes
into Facebook Live, a tool that allows users to be in the director's chair and broadcast video to the world—all from a smartphone. Facebook Live can bolster the visibility of and affinity for a small business, especially those with a regional, national or international footprint. It has many applications: from showcasing new products to Q&A's with owners and employees,
or market-testing ideas. No fancy equipment or videographers needed; all it takes is a smartphone, a strong Internet connection, a steady hand and a great story to tell (or show). The process requires just a few simple steps: • Choose an Audience: Businesses can "go Live" just to friends and followers, or set the broadcast to Public to allow

anyone to tune in. To suit the interests of a particular audience, the Facebook Live user can select the "magic wand" icon and choose from a number of custom filters. • And … Action! By tapping "Go Live," the video streaming will begin … after the requisite "3 … 2 … 1" countdown. Facebook recommends streaming for at least 10 minutes; the maximum is 90 minutes. • Cut! When the event is over, the "director" can just tap "Finish" to end the broadcast. It's that simple. Neil Hiltz, head of global vertical marketing for Facebook, says that Facebook Live is increasingly popular for small businesses because "it just makes sense to build awareness and drive conversion on platforms where people are spending the majority of their time." It rolled out nationwide in April, but had been available in different pilot areas prior to then. Delivering the forum keynote address, Brennan also discussed postal service strategies and innovations designed to enhance customer experience and add value to mail, and better position the mailing and shipping industry to compete for customers in an increasingly dynamic economy. “Together, as an industry, we are investing in new capabilities to strengthen the value of mail in the digital world,” Brennan said. “Most
importantly, we’re collaborating to deliver better experiences for our customers.” Addressing a crowd of more than 3,000, Brennan outlined key postal service investments and initiatives that are benefiting the mailing and shipping industry — emphasizing the important role that data and digital integration are playing. “The growth of the mailing and shipping industry relies on our unrivaled network and rich data platform,” she said. “We are at the convergence of physical and digital, there has never been a bigger opportunity for mail.” Brennan also showcased the power of Informed Visibility (https://link.usps.com/2016/06/16/ greater-visibility) — the postal service’s advanced data platform and analytics capability — to enable co-

By providing real-time delivery data to senders, Informed Visibility allows businesses to weave together and tailor powerful integrated marketing programs based on the moment mail reaches the mailbox. “We are provisioning Informed Visibility data to the industry and developing new technology solutions to support coordinated marketing campaigns,” Brennan said. “With these technologies, marketers can ensure they are delivering the right message at the right time.” The postmaster general committed to a strategy of reinventing and investing in technology, infrastructure and innovation. She also encouraged the mailing and shipping industry to speed the pace of best practice and new technology adoption. Six Google Search Tips to Find Anything Faster By David Nield
G
oogle is the go-to destination when you need to find something on the web—the verb "to google" even made it into the dictionary. But while everyone's heard of the popular search engine, very few know how to make the most of it. Behind the unassuming Google interface, you'll find a host of useful tricks to help you zero in on what exactly you want to find. Looking for an obscure recipe or rare photo? Read on to start using Google like an expert.
Keywords
Websites
Include / Exclude Keywords When you type a bunch of search terms into Google, it's smart enough to understand—more or less—what you want. However, the search engine sometimes provides results that match most of, but not all, of the words you typed. To be more specific, you can point out which keywords are the most important: Put a plus symbol (+) in front of words you want to force Google to include. What if the results you want get pushed off the page by similar, but irrelevant, articles? There's an easy fix: Just add a minus symbol (-) in front of keywords that you don't want to see. Google has to match any word preceded by a plus, and exclude any word preceded by a minus. Keywords that lack a preceding symbol are considered important but not essential. For example, search for "+Chicago +coffee -starbucks" to make sure you see results for nonStarbucks coffee shops in Chicago.
Time Periods
Personal Running that search without the symbols would bring up a very different list of results. Search for "dolphins -miami -football," meanwhile, to look up the aquatic mammals without seeing any mention of the football team.
While we're talking about symbols, don't forget quotation marks. Put these around a specific phrase you want to find. For example, if you want to look up the Walt Whitman poem "When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer," you don't want arti-

cles about astronomers with hearing problems. So put the title in quotation marks to ensure moe specific results.
Search Within Websites One of the most useful Google tricks to learn is the site-specific search: Just add "site:url" (replacing the "url" part with the relevant website) to the end of your search query to look on one particular site. For example, let's say you want to find what Popular Science has written about frogs. Simply go to the Google homepage and search for "frogs site:popsci.com." The results will only include pages from the specified site, and Google will apply its usual weighting, so you'll see the most relevant hits (based on factors like how many other sites link to a page, its timeliness, and so on) first. When you need to find something on a website, then this trick often works better than a site's own builtin search option. Try combining it with the keyword manipulations we mentioned above to narrow down your results even further. Google also lets you search within a top-level domain. Say you're trying to look up technical scientific information—you'll probably find more reliable results on a university or government website than you might see on a random blog. So add "site:.edu" to your search query to limit results to university websites. Or if you want, say, NASA's take on space information, add "site:.gov."
Limit the Time Period Google has been indexing the web for a long time now. While that's great for pulling up stuff from decades past, it also makes it more difficult for searchers to cut through the noise to find the exact site or page that they're after. Searching within a specific time period can help with that. After you've run a search on the main Google search engine, click
Tools and then the Any time dropdown menu to limit the results to more recent hits. This tweak is helpful for focusing on very recent stories. On the other hand, if you want to look for archived news that has since been replaced by more current stories, then you might want to specify a date range. Choose Custom range, and you get to specify a start and end date.
Discover PDFs, Spreadsheets, and More Google's search results mainly concentrate on webpages, but it also indexes publicly available files. You can look for them using a "filetype:" command at the end of your normal query. So looking for "report filetype:pdf" will return PDFs with "report" in the title. Try "report filetype:xlsx" to do the same for Excel spreadsheets. This also lets you search for images, though Google already has a handy image search tool. Remember, this will only work for publicly available documents and files uploaded to the web. You're not going to suddenly come across some secret government files...or at least we hope not.
Advanced Search Options These tricks are great for getting started, but if you really want to get specific, you should take advantage of Google's more specialized search options. On any Google search results page, click Settings from the toolbar at the top, and then choose Advanced search. The subsequent page will give you a host of extra ways to focus your searches, from looking at a given region to finding images you have the right to reuse. Some of the operators, such as specific phrases, will be familiar by now. But the extra region and language options can be helpful. By default, Google prioritizes
hits from the country or continent where you're currently located, so you should use these settings to get better results for the rest of the world. The advanced search page is also worth visiting if you forget one of the tricks we've mentioned above, like searching on a certain site or excluding keywords—or doing both at the same time. Once you've typed in all your parameters, click Advanced Search to see what you can find.
Get Personal Results Want to sift through the emails and files you've stored in Gmail or Google Drive? You don't have to visit those apps—Google will let you search through your personal accounts from the main search engine page. However, this will only work if whatever you're looking for is in a Google app and you're signed into your Google account. So don't worry: Your emails won't pop up when somebody else googles you from a strange computer. For example, type "my flights" into the Google search box to see information on flights you've previously booked. "My trips" will reveal upcoming trips you're taking. (Side note: Google will pull this data from your Gmail account, so if you didn't receive a confirmation email, you won't see trip information.) You can look through your Google Photos too—try searching "my photos of..." with the name of one of your contacts. Recently, Google has been making personal searches a more prominent feature. You can find a dedicated Personal tab at the top of the results page, alongside the usual News, Images, and Videos ones. It's a one-stop searching shop for all the stuff you've stored in Google's various services https://flipboard.com/@flipboard/-sixgoogle-search-tips-to-find-anything/f2caad42eb9%2Fpopsci.com

Serena Williams is Joining the SurveyMonkey Board By Kara Swisher
Serena Williams with SurveyMonkey CEO Zander Lurie
T
ennis star and entrepreneur Serena Williams is joining the board of SurveyMonkey, along with Intuit CEO and chairman Brad Smith, the online survey company said. Hewlett Packard Enterprise CEO Meg Whitman and Turbonomic’s executive chairman Bill Veghte are stepping off as directors as part of the move. As most know, Williams is one of the most famous athletes in the world, having won the most Grand Slam singles tennis titles in history. Her most recent addition to that stellar performance was a win at the Australian Open. Smith, who may or may not be good at tennis (I didn’t ask), has run the iconic financial software company a very long time and has served on many tech boards, including at
Yahoo. Other SurveyMonkey directors include board chairman David Ebersman and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, whose late husband David Goldberg was SurveyMonkey’s CEO. That’s a job now filled by longtime Silicon Valley exec Zander Lurie, who said the changes come as he has settled into his role. Lurie was previously an exec at GoPro. “I have been on the job 15 months, working on the forward vision and strategy here, and it’s natural to reassess board,” he said in an interview. Adding the high-profile Williams, who also runs a fashion company, to the board came at the suggestion of Sandberg, Lurie said. Williams said this is her first cor-
porate board seat, and she wanted to move to new arenas that suit her recent business efforts in fashion. “I am an entrepreneur and I am drawn to opportunities that are innovative,” she said. “The more I learned about this company, the more I felt their core values were close to mine.” She also has gotten to know Silicon Valley better via her engagement to longtime techie Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and other startups. “I am engaged to a techie, so I guess that makes me engaged to tech,” she joked. Lurie said Williams “obviously has totally different skills sets ... we are well represented with Silicon Valley experience, but to know Serena is to know what greatness looks like.” Among her attributes, he added, were also her activism, philanthropy and voice around issues like the gender pay gap. Adding Smith, Lurie added, means he gets a mentor on “how to be a world-class CEO.” “I’ve actively used SurveyMonkey products and have been inspired with the caliber of leadership that has guided this amazing company through the years,” Smith wrote in a blog post. In another blog post this morning, Sandberg also weighed in about the pair. “Brad Smith is one of the most respected CEOs in Silicon Valley,” she wrote. “Serena is an activist, marketer, brand builder and one of the greatest athletes of all time.” She added: “SurveyMonkey is near and dear to my heart. Dave loved the company, its mission of helping people make better decisions, and his colleagues that he worked with every day.” https://www.recode. net/2017/5/24/15683476/serena-williamsjoins-survey-monkey-board

Google Links Ads to Brick-and-Mortar Sales By Heather Fletcher
M
any marketers had their doubts about whether digital ads were worth the money they were paying, because they didn’t have the “last click” of the brick-and-mortar sale. Now, Google is linking that sale to the ad touchpoint. “Attribution” isn’t exactly a sexy term to marketers, but “sales,” “revenue” and “ROI” are just that. So as Google explained how it would link online ads to offline sales, those were more like the terms used by Keynoter Sridhar Ramaswamy, SVP of ads and commerce at Google, during May 23’s Google Marketing Next live stream. An article published on May 23 by the Associated Press got more into the weeds. Consumers logged into Google leave a digital footprint, which the search giant tracks. Those consumers visit the marketers who placed the ads and convert in physical locations. If they use credit or debit cards that Google can track, the advertisers know that ad was responsible for the retailer’s visit, reads the AP article (www.kiro7.com/ news/google-aims-to-connect-onlineads-to-realworld-sales/525590932).
Revisiting Ramaswamy at the live stream, he says: “We’ve found that consumers who
c l i c k on an advertiser’s Google search ad before visiting a store, are over 25% more likely to make a purchase while they’re at the store. And they also spend 10% more, on average.” So Google ads influence which retail store consumers pick, he notes. “That’s why, later this year, we’re also rolling out two new tools to help you measure store sales accurately and completely. The first one will allow you to import transaction data into AdWords to see store sales and revenue at the device and campaign level for your search or shopping campaigns. We have a second tool where you can take advantage of Google’s third-party partnerships to get store sales data with no implementation on your end.” Again, the AP article explains the process in a more nuts-and-bolts fashion. “Google says it has access to roughly 70% of U.S. credit and deb-
it card sales through partnerships with other companies that track that data. By matching ad clicks with this data, Google says it can automatically inform merchants when their digital ads translate into sales at a brick-and-mortar store. Previously, if people clicked on an ad without buying anything online, an advertiser might conclude that the ad was a waste of money. If the program works, it could help persuade merchants to boost their digital marketing budgets. The data add to the digital dossiers that Google has compiled on users of its search engine and other services, including Gmail, YouTube and Android.” www.targetmarketingmag.com/article/ google-links-ads-to-brick-and-mortar-sal es/#ne=4a21b9167bf658408191e7c491 40a9aa&utm_source=today-%40-targetmarketing&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_ campaign=2017-05-30&utm_content=goog le+links+ads+to+brick-and-mortar+sales-4

Integrating Video Marketing into Your Content Strategy:
Do’s and Don’ts By Gabriel Shaoolian
T
ruly powerful content marketing consists of more than just blog posts. In order to make your content stand out and engage users, you need to create content in a variety of formats. Video is a major part of the equation. More than 80% of Internet users watch digital video — it has become part an established part of our everyday lives.
But even if you know you’re ready to begin investing in video marketing, it can be difficult to know exactly where to start. Videos take more planning, time and resource expenditure to create than a simple
blog post does, which means you want to do as much as you can to ensure success. If you’re just getting started with video, take a look at some dos and don’ts that will help you on your way.
Getting Started Before you jump into creating video content, you need to have a clear idea of what your goals are. In order to assess the success of
your efforts, it’s important to do have a set of objectives to measure your performance against. Having an established set of goals will help ensure that your efforts stay on track; because without clear
objectives, it’s easy to become distracted and go too far down a path that isn’t ultimately worthwhile. As with any marketing initiative, video marketing should begin with a strategy. With your goals defined, you can begin to map out content ideas that support those goals. You can also set micro-goals and schedule review periods to assess performance to-date and make
adjustments, if necessary.
Dos and Don’ts If you have a strategy in-hand, you’re ready to get started creating and sharing your videos. But there
46 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
are many pitfalls to be avoided along the way. Video creation is far from cheap; so you want to make sure you’re making the most of it by following a few key dos and don’ts. • Do: Invest in Quality Creating videos involves a high level of expertise. That means unless you have a background in video, you aren’t going to be able to create high-quality videos all by yourself. Recognize your limitations and rely on the experts where necessary. It’s better to invest in quality upfront in order to get an result you’re happy with than to cut corners and end up with something that doesn’t represent your brand appropriately. • Do: Track Video Metrics If you want to know whether your videos are getting results, you need to have tracking in place. You’ll need to set up tracking on your own website. Video platforms like YouTube and Vimeo will provide their own metrics, and you should be paying attention to those. How does your audience engage with videos on those channels? Which videos get the longest watch times? Which kinds of videos send the most referral visits? What about the most referral visits that convert? Pay attention to these metrics as your campaigns progress, looking for takeaways that will help optimize performance. • Do: Make Videos MobileFriendly Mobile users love to watch videos, and if your videos aren’t functional on mobile, you’ll be losing out on valuable viewers. Make sure players on your website are responsive to different screen sizes. Test your
videos across platforms and devices to ensure you catch any issues or difficulties engaging with them on mobile. • Don’t: Ramble On and On Attention spans are short — especially so on the Internet. Keep this in mind when developing your video content. Thirty seconds is generally held to be the sweet spot in terms of video length. That doesn’t mean audiences won’t sit still for longer videos — but if you’re going past one minute, your content had better be riveting. Consider what your audience needs and wants to know, and focus on delivering those things in a memorable way. Cut out information that feels unnecessary or doesn’t serve a clear purpose. • Do: Include Branding Elements Your videos can and should appear in places other than on your own website and social channels. You’ll want to encourage people to share your videos and possibly even embed them on their own websites. Even if your videos will likely be viewed outside of the context of one of your brand properties, you still want them to be associated with your brand. It’s essential that you include brand elements — logo, brand name and identifiable brand aesthetics — in your videos so that they are linked to your brand, regardless of the context in which they are seen. • Do: Support Your Videos If you’re going to invest time and
money in creating video content, you want to make sure those videos actually get seen by your audience. You’ll need to do more than just post them to your website to ensure that happens. Support your video content by promoting it on your social channels and investing some advertising spend behind it. You can create short teasers out of longer videos that will work for social audiences. You can also incorporate videos into your email marketing and display advertising campaigns. • Don’t: Forget to Tell a Story Humans respond powerfully to storytelling — it’s what makes it such a useful marketing technique. Stories are what allow people to connect with an idea or concept on a meaningful level. And when they’re able to connect to an idea, they’re more likely to remember it long after the fact. I believe video is the best medium with which to tell a story. Successful videos contain the shape of a story — whether it’s a customer recounting the story of how a product improved her life, or the story of how a brand was created.
In Conclusion Videos represent some of the most engaging content a brand can create. They have the power to capture user attention and increase recall. But you can’t enter into video marketing without a plan or a basic understanding of the elements of successful video campaigns. Keep these tips in mind as you embark on the next phase of your content strategy. www.targetmarketingmag.com/article/ integrating-video-marketing-contentstrategy-dos-donts/#ne=4a21b9167 bf658408191e7c49140a9aa&utm_ source=today-%40-target-marketing&utm_ medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=201706-03&utm_content=integrating+video+m arketing+into+your+content+strategy%3A +do%E2%80%99s+and+don%E2%80%9 9ts-5

Remarks at 2017 Facebook Shareholder Meeting

hank you for allowing me to speak to you violence over Facebook Live. There is no place today. for live killings to be broadcast on Facebook. Good news: Facebook has changed We urge Facebook to take these steps: the way the global community receives news • form a independent advisory commission and information, how it connects and networks to develop recommendations to mitigate together – against public display of crime and violence But as technology propels forward, there are on Facebook Live; unforeseen and unintended consequences - as • work with “urban” and ethnic minority technology collides head on with the social, cultural communities to design a public campaign to and political issues of our time: “Respond and Report”; and With all that is going on in Washington, we need • hold town halls in schools and community Facebook’s leadership more now than ever before. centers to educate the public about use, and not mis-use of the Facebook Live platform. But to tackle these issues and prepare Facebook for the future - - - must have the best minds, most experience, diverse opinions and thought . . . This is where diversity, inclusion, and equality intersect: When I first came to Facebook in 2014 – there were no Blacks or Latinos or Asians on the Board; no Blacks or Latinos or Asians in your C-suite leadership; there was a gender imbalance. Blacks and Latinos were just 2%-4% of your US employees, even fewer in your tech Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. workforce. report available shows just 145 African American employees at Facebook. Still no African Americans on the Board or in the C-suites. It’s a contradiction in what is, and what you stand for. Mark, you said last year, “there’s just so much research that shows that diverse teams perform better at anything you’re trying to do.” So if this is true, and it is, your lack of performance on diversity, inclusion and equality reflects less than your best effort. Are you as disappointed in the lack of progress as the rest of us are? Clearly new ideas and solutions are needed; not
doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. What are your new ideas? New Strategies? There is no talent deficit but an opportunity deficit. There is a pipeline of qualified board members. There is a pipeline of C-suite leaders. There are more black and brown students graduating, than are being hired. And right here in East Palo Alto, Street Code, led by Olatunde, is bringing forward the next generation of hackers, coders and designers. They need your support. And RainbowPUSH is organizing tech labs in 1,000 churches across America to train our youth and adults on digital literacy and empowerment. What we need is a plan you will honor, not more platitudes of “we are not where we want to be and ‘we have much more work we must do. I hope to work with you in creating a Commission on gender and racial equality to address these and other critical issues of our time, and come here next year and see real change. Super Soaker Inventor Takes Aim at Funding Young Engineers By Gabe Gutierrez
L
o n n i e Johnson created one of the most popular toys on the planet — but the inventor of the "Super Soaker" isn't done making a splash. Lonnie Johnson DISCbots is now focusing on new battery technology, but his most rewarding pursuit may be sharing his knowledge with a new generation of engineers. Johnson grew up in Mobile, Alabama at the height of the civil rights movement. "There was a lot of fear, a lot of anxiety, a lot of stress," he remembered. "When I was a child the 'White-only' bathrooms were still very prevalent." He turned that fear into motivation — and a career as a NASA rocket scientist. But his "a-ha" moment came unexpectedly while he was designing a water pump. He had been testing the pump out in a bathroom when he noticed something. "I thought to myself, 'Geez, this would make a neat water gun!'" he said. "At that point I decided to put my engineering hat on and design a high performance water gun." That idea would change his life. He built the first prototype for what became "The Super Soaker." The toy, which first went on sale in the early 1990's, eventually topped $1 billion in sales. Johnson also went on to come up with the NERF gun and other toys. "It's interesting that the Super Soaker gets so much attention," he said. "I really like to think of myself as a serious engineer!" Now, he's getting serious about giving back. His nonprofit helps fund high school robotics teams. One of them — the DISCbots (www.facebook.com/discbots2015) from the nearby DeKalb International Student Center —
is made up of refugees from nine countries. Kalombo Mukuca fled the Central A f r i c a n Republic a year ago. "Even babies -- they kill Lonnie G. them," he Johnson said. "So we don't want to get killed." Emanuel Tezera came to the United States from Ethiopia. "I want to fix something in this world," he said. Robot's Uncanny Dexterity could Transform Manufacturing By Steve Dent
R
obotic hands can play drums and even twirl objects with aplomb, but they're still poor at picking up unfamiliar objects. That's why UC Berkeley's DexNet 2.0 bot is so impressive -- using deep learning, it can successfully grasp random, real-world objects 99% of the time. What's more, the tech, developed with the help of Amazon, Google and Toyota, is far enough along that it could be put to work in manufacturing and supply chains in the near future. Researchers trained the DexNet 2.0 deep learning system using a vast library of 3D shapes and suitable grasp positions to match those objects. Using virtual, rather
than real objects made it possible to train the AI much more quickly. "We can generate sufficient training data for deep neural networks in a day or so instead of running months of trials on a real robot," Berkeley postdoctoral researcher Jeff Mahler told MIT Technology Review. After training the AI system, they connected it to a standard robotic arm outfitted with an off-the-shelf 3D depth sensing camera. When confronted with a new object, the system can quickly figure out the best grasp to match. If it's more than 50% sure it can grab something, it succeeds 98% of the time. If its confidence levels are below that, it can poke the object first to figure
out a better grasp, and can then successfully grasp it 99% of the time -- significantly more than any other systems, the team says. T h e researchers figure their new training methods, combined with cloud data and p r o ce ss in g , c o u l d accelerate the use of robots in industry, even in nontraditional settings like hospitals. So, it's not surprising the study has industry players heavy into robotics behind it, including To y o t a , Siemens and Amazon. Amazon actually runs an annual "Warehouse Picking Challenge" to find robots that can best pick items from warehouse shelves to fulfill orders. The deep learning tech will be great for industry, allowing execs like Jeff Bezos to cut warehouse employees and save money. However, it sucks for the workers who will be out of a job, and could widen the gap between ultra-wealthy titans like Bezos and average folks -- showing once again that AI will require not just technological solutions, but political ones, too. www.engadget.com/2017/06/05/ uc-berkeley-dexnet20-dexterousrobot/

Encouraging Word of Mouth With Your Email Marketing By Gareth O'Sullivan
can easily monitor what people are saying about their company. Mobile phone network Three (http://www.three.co.uk) created a hashtag to promote their customers being able to use their phone abroad at no extra cost:
N
owadays, despite there being more marketing channels than ever, a lot of business promotion still lies in the hands of the customers. Even in this technological age, something as simple as word of mouth is still hugely effective in driving new customers to a business. Yet, many companies are reluctant to implement their own word of mouth marketing campaigns.
Why Word of Mouth? People can be naturally distrustful of businesses. Generally, they need to see evidence of a positive track record before they will part with their hard earned cash. They are more likely to trust recommendations from people they trust, i.e. their friends and family. This is what makes word of mouth so powerful. It also specifically targets the kind of people who are interested in the products or services that you offer. In the past, businesses have shied away spending money on word of mouth campaigns because of how difficult is it to monitor their success and ROI. However, people communicate in very different ways
these days. Word of mouth can theoretically take place on social media, message boards and via email, making it much easier to track results. Email provides a great medium to encourage word of mouth amongst your customers. Messages can be forwarded to an almost infinite number of people, and conversations that start in an email can continue on social media, or even offline. Here are just some of the ways email can be used to generate word of mouth:
Lingerie company Bravissimo (https://www.bravissimo.com) took the hashtag trend one step further by offering a prize to people who shared their stories:
Start a Conversation Rather than just using your email marketing campaigns as a product showcase, you can use the medium to encourage conversations between people both online and offline. You can ask them to share stories, experiences, reviews or even photographs. Recently, one of the ways businesses have been encouraging conversations between their customers is by including hashtags in their marketing emails. With a hashtag, conversations can move seamlessly between email and social media, and businesses
As well as encouraging a discussion, this campaign had the potential to introduce Bravissimo to both the person mentioned in the post and all their Facebook friends, with very little effort on the part of the company.
56 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
As well as starting your own conversations, you can also take advantage of other popular social media ‘trends’, basing an email marketing campaign around them. The most notable example of this recently was the photograph of the dress that found its way onto social media (was it blue and black or white and gold?). When discussion about the dress took off all over the Internet, fashion retailer Roman Originals (who produced the dress in question) (https://www.
Fitness
Clubs
(https://www.
offered their members a £20 gift card if a friend of theirs joined the gym: dwfitnessclubs.com)
romanoriginals.co.uk)
‘hijacked’ the hashtag and used it in an email marketing campaign:
iCertain people can be reluctant to spend money on a new product purely on a friend’s recommendation. They may want to try the product for themselves first. Beauty company L’Occitane (http://usa.loccitane.com) used this as the motivation for their referral campaign. They emailed their customers a code that three of their friends could use to claim a free gift box: This is a great way to both
increase mailing list subscribers and to get more people using their products. Word of mouth campaigns offer a simple and affordable way to open your business up to a whole new audience. By using email to encourage word of mouth among your customers, you also have the added benefit of making your messages feel more personal and engaging. www.business2community. com/email-marketing/encouragingword-mouth-email-marketing01235861#pbdt3jdkw0CImw6X.99.
Reward Referrals Not everyone is inclined to share stories about businesses on social media. Perhaps they haven’t experienced anything exceptional enough for them to talk about with their friends and family (even though they’re perfectly happy with your business). Some people need a little extra push to encourage word of mouth. A referral campaign, where you reward customers for introducing their friends to your business, is the perfect way to do this. Many companies run campaigns like this. In this example, DW 57 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819

Net Neutrality Fuels Innovation and Must be Preserved By Mohamad Ali, President and CEO, CARBONITE
L
ike the interstate highway system, railroads and public power utilities before it, the internet has become an indispensable resource that fuels innovation, healthy competition and growth in the American economy. But that engine of prosperity will be irreparably harmed if plans to end net neutrality come to fruition. Net neutrality creates a level playing field for businesses by ensuring that too much power doesn’t fall into the hands of too few. If it’s eliminated, the world’s five largest broadband service providers will gain unfettered control over who gets access to the internet and how fast their internet connection
speeds will be. That is a recipe for favoritism and unfair competition that flies in the face of traditional American business values. The end of net neutrality would additionally give larger companies with countless resources an unfair advantage over competing small and midsize businesses — the U.S. economy’s most productive innovators and job creators. This is why I’m asking every citizen to join Carbonite in urging U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai to
Mohamad Ali halt the steps he is taking to do away with net neutrality protections. Pai’s proposed “deregulation” of the telecommunications industry simply translates to letting large internet carriers boost profits at the expense of innovation and job creation across America.

Last Friday, I was pleased to welcome U.S. Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and a diverse group of Massachusetts-based technology companies to the Carbonite offices to discuss innovation and the net neutrality issue. We talked about how all our companies are heavily dependent on equal access to the internet to provide the best service possible to our customers at fair and reasonable prices. We discussed how companies that are just starting out, companies that are still being dreamed about, and every person in this country (students, parents, teachers, do-ityourselfers) are heavily dependent on fair and equal access to the internet to solve problems and inspire new ideas. For Carbonite, even a one-second delay in our internet performance could degrade our service and ultimately threaten jobs, not just those of Carbonite employees, but jobs at small businesses around the world who rely on Carbonite to get their businesses up and running after a data disaster. The dozen companies who joined me today all provide unique
products and services — from travel planning and industrial devices to job recruitment, robots and advertising — but we all have one thing in common: We all depend on the internet as a foundation for innovation. We must not let our shared future be determined by the narrow interests of a handful of large internet carriers. This is why Carbonite is taking action to support
net neutrality. https://www.carbonite.com/en/ cloud-backup/business/resources/ carbonite-blog/net-neutrality-fuelsinnovation-and-must-be-preserved /?c3ch=Responsys&c3nid=Respo nsys&utm_source=carbonite&utm_ medium=owned-email&utm_ campaign=10079&utm_ content=2959&launch_ date=060917&c3placement=2959

TSA Tests Fingerprint Screening for Flight Check-in By Steven Musil
H
ow would you like to chuck the boarding pass and ID flash at the airport for your fingerprint? The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Tuesday it's testing a new checkpoint screening technology that matches fingerprints provided at the checkpoint with those already on file for travelers enrolled in the agency's PreCheck program. The program allows low-risk travelers to go through expedited screening instead of waiting in regular security lines.
The TSA said the technology has the potential to automate the checkin process by eliminating the need to check passengers' boarding passes and identification, granting travelers access to the airport's secured area through an electronic gate. "TSA looks at technologies and intelligence capabilities that allow us to analyze and secure the travel environment, passengers and their property," Steve Karoly of the TSA said in a statement. He's the TSA's acting assistant administrator of requirements and capabilities
analysis. "Through these and other technology demonstrations, we are looking to reinvent and enhance security effectiveness to meet the evolving threat and ensure that passengers get to their destinations safely," he said. Participation in the biometric screening process is voluntary. The program is being tested at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Denver International Airport. www.cnet.com/news/tsa-testsfingerprint-screening-for-flight-check-in

2017 Consumer Digital Usage and Behavior Study
Welcome to More.
I
n our second year of this report, we return to the conversation with new data and insights into how consumers interact with and think about the email messages they receive. This year, we also asked in-depth questions around how consumers think about privacy and security. We asked 1,200 consumers, from teens to baby boomers, living all over the United States. You’ll see the details behind:
47% of consumers (across all demos) have a separate email address that they use exclusively for emails they don’t intend to open. 59% of consumers leave an email unread if they plan to read it later, 33% flag it. When registering for a mobile app, 83% of consumers use their email address instead of their social media accounts. Last year, we learned that teens and millennials prefer email. Let’s see if that held true this year. Their answers — and our analysis and advice — are in this report for you. Visit www. targetmarketingmag.com/ resource/2017-consumer-digitalusage-and-behavior-study to download the study.

O
ne of the most troubling prospects for 2017 is the nomination of Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions for Attorney General. Senator Sessions stands against everything that you and I fight for: He's spoken out against the Voting Rights Act, and has described the work that the NAACP and ACLU do to protect civil rights as "un-American." We must do all we can to prevent him from rolling back the rights and protections our parents and grandparents worked so hard to gain, and we've worked so hard to preserve. Please make a donation today — even $4 can make a real difference — to help us fight back in 2017. The Attorney General is the chief law enforcement officer of the United States. And our president-elect has appointed Jeff Sessions, a man who's actively threatened to strip us of our rights throughout his career. Can we trust someone with our rights — and our lives — with a track record like this? • Sessions was denied appointment as a federal judge because of racist comments he made to a colleague. • He opposed and criticized the removal of the Confederate flag from public spaces. • He once joked that he approved of the Ku Klux Klan until he learned its members smoked marijuana. Too many of our brothers and sisters have sacrificed for the rights we have today. We're ready to battle for our rights in 2017 — and we need your support. Uber Hires Marketer Bozoma Saint John By Adrianne Pasquarelli.
U
ber has made another highprofile hire at a time when its brand could use the boost. Bozoma Saint John is joining Uber from Apple Music, where she had served as head of global consumer marketing for three years. At San Francisco-based Uber, she'll be chief brand officer. Saint John is not the first marketing exec the ride-hailing company has poached. Last fall, Jeff Jones, former chief marketing officer at Target, joined Uber as president of ride sharing. He left in March, however, amid company controversies that had CEO Travis Kalanick seeking "leadership help" and a chief operating officer. That was viewed as a de facto demotion
for Jones. The controversies also included allegations of sexual harassment at the company, sparking an investigation that resulted in the firing of more than 20 employees, Uber said Tuesday. Now the publicly belagured Uber will be relying on Saint John to help restore its image. Last June, the Ghana native unveiled the new Apple Music at the tech brand's developer's conference, where her stage presence drew comparisons to the late Steve Jobs. Saint John previously worked at PepsiCo. Uber posted a message on Twitter announcing her hire but did not reply to inquires about the exact scope of her duties.
Saint John could not immediately be reached for comment, but tweeted about the new job herself on Tuesday afternoon by quoting Tracy Chapman. "You got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere; maybe we make a deal, maybe together we can get somewhere"Tracy Chapman #uber #letsgo," she wrote. Uber also announced Tuesday it has hired Frances Frei, a professor at Harvard Business School, as senior VP of leadership and strategy. http://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/ uber-hires-apple-music-marketerbozoma-saint-john/309295 https://flipboard.com/@flipboard/-thewomen-tasked-with-fixing-uber-speak/ f-c4b93ee2a0%2Frefinery29.com

Facebook Connects Voters to Elected Officials
F
acebook Inc (FB.O) announced a set of three new features intended to boost civic engagement among users in the United States on its platform by connecting them more easily with their elected representatives.
The new offerings come as the social media juggernaut has sought to rehabilitate its image as a credible source of information following a wave of criticism after last November's presidential election that the company did too little to combat misleading or wholly fabricated political news stories during the campaign. Among the features, Facebook will now allow users to turn on
"Constituent Badges" to identify them as living in their elected officials' district. The opt-in badge will be visible when a user comments on content shared by their federal, state and local representatives. Facebook also announced "Constituent Insights," which allows elected officials and other users to find local news stories that are popular in their district. "District Targeting" creates a new preset audience selection that lets politicians' pages target posts to people likely to be their constituents. www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/ facebook-launches-features-toconnect-us-users-to-elected-officials/ ar-BBCf7dr?li=AA4Zoy&ocid=spartan dhp

If you already have the name of an ancestors and you would like to find more information, type the name in the field shown on the website. This will search FamilySearch.org’s extensive database of more than 5 billion searchable names in historical records and allow you to add them to your own family tree. Congresswoman Diane Watson discusses The Project International and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), and the California African American Museum. The project began on Juneteenth (June 19) 2015 and with the help of more than twenty-five thousand volunteers, was completed on June 20, 2016. As a result of the tireless effort of thousands, the names of nearly 1.8 million men, women and children are now searchable online. Now that the images have been indexed, millions have access to the names of their ancestors, allowing individuals to build their family trees

B
arack and Michelle Obama, Muhammad Ali, Harriet Tubman and Prince are some of the people being featured in a new mural at a landmark restaurant in Washington. Artist Aniekan Udofia began the mural Thursday evening at Ben's Chili Bowl (http://benschilibowl. com). The mural, named "The Torch," pays tribute to African American culture. The work is scheduled to be complete with the artist's signature vibrant colors by mid-June, according to The Washington Post.
The restaurant announced earlier this year that it was "time to refresh and repaint" an earlier mural that dated to 2012. Udofia also created that mural which featured other celebrities including comedian Bill Cosby. The restaurant came up with a list of over 50 people and asked customers to vote on who they would like to see on the new mural. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/muralpays-tribute-to-prince-ali-and-obamas/arBBCbYqw?ocid=spartandhp#image=2

Neil DeGrasse Tyson to Receive Stephen Hawking Medal, Because He’s Awesome at Communicating Science By Teresa Jusino
A
s a scientist, it must be awesome when a worldrenowned theoretical physicist (and cosmologist) publicly commends you on the work you do. Neil deGrasse Tyson is feeling those feels today, now that it’s been announced that he’s getting a prestigious award from none other than Stephen Hawking. DeGrasse Tyson will be awarded the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, which is awarded to people who deliver science to the masses and foster a love of science among laypeople. Medals are awarded to science communicators in three categories: writers, musicians and artists, and people in the film and entertainment industry. DeGrasse Tyson’s award is in the writing category, in large part thanks to his work on Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey and podcast-turned-TV-show, StarTalk. The announcement was made at the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History here in New York City, of which DeGrasse Tyson is the director. While Hawking couldn’t be there in person, he did make a video appearance announcing
and congratulating all the winners: DeGrasse Tyson totally deserves this award, as he’s done an amazing job of making science accessible to non-scientists, both as director of the Hayden Planetarium and through his various TV projects, books, appearances, and science advocate at the federal level. He has a new book out called Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, the casual title reminding us that astrophysics is within our reach. His work reminds us that science isn’t something we need a Ph.D. to understand and appreciate, that you don’t have to be a scientist to love science, or understand why science matters outside the world of academia. In an interview with Space.com, deGrasse Tyson said that effective science communication, whether on the government level or a the level of your climate change-denying uncle at Thanksgiving, is to provide people with “empowering ideas rather than just giving people something else to think. Education is not just pouring in knowledge.” In other words, it’s not just about spitting facts at people. It’s about illuminating concepts and ideas that will allow people to discover and learn the facts themselves. DeGrasse Tyson will receive the Stephen Hawking Medal in two weeks at the Starmus Festival, an annual international gathering celebrating science and art that takes place in Trondheim, Norway. Also to be honored at the awards ceremony are Music and Arts winner, composer Jean-Michel Jarre, and in the entertainment category, the producers of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. Huge congrats to our “personal astrophysicist!” www.themarysue.com/neil-degrasse-tyson-stephenhawking-medal/

Noose Found in National Museum of African American History and Culture By Lorraine Boissoneault
T
ourists visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture found a noose in an exhibition on segregation. Park police came to investigate and removed the noose, and the exhibit gallery was reopened within three hours, Smithsonian officials said. "The noose has long represented a deplorable act of cowardice and depravity—a symbol of extreme violence for African Americans. Today's incident is a painful reminder of the challenges that African Americans continue to face," wrote Lonnie Bunch, the director of the museum, in an e-mail to staff. The disturbing incident comes only four days after a noose was found hanging from a tree outside the Hirshhorn Museum. The investigation into the noose found at NMAAHC is ongoing, but the public and staff have been assured that the museum is safe. “The Smithsonian family stands together in condemning this act of hatred and intolerance, especially repugnant in a museum that affirms and celebrates the American values of inclusion and diversity,” wrote the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution David Skorton in an Institution-wide email. “We will not be intimidated. Cowardly acts like these will not, for one moment, prevent us from the vital work we do.” These ominous reminders of America’s dark history with lynching have appeared around the country, from
a school in Missouri to a series of four nooses hung around a construction site in Maryland. Other nooses have been found on the Duke University campus, the Port of Oakland in California, a fraternity house at the University of Maryland, a middle school in Maryland, and at a high school in Lakewood, California. All of them seem to be part of a larger wave of violence, intimidation and hate crimes. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 1,300 hate incidents were reported between the 2016 election and February 2017. Of those 1,300, anti-immigrant incidents have been the most prevalent, followed by anti-black. “We haven’t seen such mainstream support for hate in decades, not since the Civil Rights era 50 years ago,” said SPLC spokesperson Ryan Lenz. “We’re witnessing a moment when there are tremendous challenges to the country that we built on pluralism and democracy. The civil rights accorded every American are firmly under threat.” Bunch closed his email with the assurance that, "We will continue to help breach the chasm of race that has divided this nation since its inception." www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/noosefound-national-museum-african-american-history-andculture-180963519/#od3YsqvTH2xCus8o.99

EJI Announces Plans to Build Museum and National Lynching Memorial
T
he Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) plans to build a national memorial to victims of lynching and open a museum that explores African American history from enslavement to mass incarceration. Both the museum and memorial will be located in Montgomery, Alabama. From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration (https://eji.org/ enslavement-to-mass-incarcerationmuseum) will be situated within 150
yards of one of the South's most prominent slave auction sites and the Alabama River dock and rail station where tens of thousands of enslaved black people were trafficked. The museum will contain high-tech exhibits, artifacts, recordings, and films, as well as comprehensive data and information on lynching and racial segregation. The museum will connect the history of racial
inequality with contemporary issues of mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and police violence. The Memorial to Peace and Justice (https://massdesigngroup. org/work/design/memorial-peace-andjustice) will sit on six acres of land
in Montgomery and become the nation's first national memorial to victims of lynching. The massive structure will contain the names of over 4,000 lynching victims engraved on concrete columns representing each county in the United States where racial terror lynchings took place. Counties across the country will be invited to retrieve duplicate columns with the names of each county's lynching victims to be placed in every county. In February 2015, EJI released Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror (https:// eji.org/reports), a ground-breaking report that documents more than
4,000 lynchings of black people in the United States between 1877 and 1950. EJI identified several hundred more lynchings than had previously been recognized. For a copy of the full report, please contact EJI. Visit the Lynching in America Online Experience at: https://lynchinginamerica.eji.org.

Floating columns on which victims names will be inscribed. Racial terrorism forced millions of black people to flee the South during the first half of the 20th century and played a major role in shaping the demographic geography of America by creating large black populations in urban communities in the North and West. The national memorial to lynching victims will be one of the nation's most ambitious projects relating to the history of racial terror lynchings. EJI has purchased six acres of land atop a rise that overlooks the City of Montgomery and out to the American South, where terror lynchings were most prevalent. The memorial is constructed of hundreds of floating columns on which the names of lynching victims from over 800 counties across the United States will be inscribed. The classical structure will be surrounded by a park, where duplicate columns engraved with
the names of lynching victims in each county will be placed until they are claimed by each county and permanently installed in the places where racial terror lynchings took place. The memorial will be dynamic, and seeks to inspire local efforts to make the history of racial terror in America more visible and tangible. The memorial is being designed in partnership with MASS Design Group, an award-winning architectural firm based in Boston. After the release of Lynching in America, EJI initiated several cultural projects designed to deepen understanding about racial terror in America. EJI is placing markers at lynching sites across the country in an effort to change the landscape of the American South, which is saturated with iconography and memorials romanticizing the Confederacy and the effort to preserve slavery.
EJI also launched a project to collect soil at lynching sites and create an exhibit that tells the stories of lynching victims. Hundreds of people have begun to actively engage in community remembrance projects around the era of lynching. The museum, From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, is expected to open in 2018. It is housed on the site of a former slave warehouse in Montgomery, Alabama, located midway between the former slave auction block and the main river dock and train station where tens of thousands of enslaved people were trafficked during the height of the domestic slave trade. The museum will showcase interactive displays about America's history of racial inequality and present dynamic information and content, including virtual reality films about the domestic slave trade, lynching, segregation and mass incarceration. The museum will house the nation's most comprehensive collection of data on lynching. To connect this history with contemporary issues of mass incarceration, the museum will employ narratives that reveal the racially biased administration of criminal justice, police violence, and wrongful convictions. The museum will feature new art pieces by contemporary African American artists, including Sanford Biggers (http://sanfordbiggers.com) and Hank Willis Thomas (https:// hankwillisthomas.com). EJI has partnered with Local Projects, whose credits include the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City, to build the new museum, which will house reports, films, and other cultural pieces on the history of race in America.. https://eji.org/news/eji-announcesplans-to-build-museum-andnational-lynching-memorial/

"Big Barrels" Leads the Way Forward to Africa Oil and Gas 2.0 By Anene Peters
A
uthor NJ Ayuk, founder and CEO of Centurion Law Group, is an authority on the energy business and enterprise in Africa today As an exemplary African entrepreneur, NJ Ayuk has intimately witnessed the transformative impact of the oil and gas industry on the continent, being an active player in building countries, shaping economies and its societies. The launch of, Big Barrels: African Oil and Gas and the Quest for Prosperity (http://APO. af/1ogcte), co-written with João Marques, is long awaited; confronting the misinterpreted view that energy-rich countries undeniably suffer from and often victimized by the effects of the ‘resource curse’. The reality, the book argues, could not be further from it. Big Barrels reads in the introduction: “The evidence makes it clear that the responsible and sustainable development of these resources is not only possible, but may be the quickest and most effective route to peace and prosperity for many of these nations. The question of how this can be done is central to this book.” Through nine chapters detailing case studies of what countries like Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania have done right, readers gain an alternative view of how developing petroleum resources positively impacts the continent. Big Barrels lends a silver lining on Africa’s petroleum sector and how their fates are inextricably linked. Mr. Ayuk and Mr. Marques emerge through this powerful depiction as a seminal voice for how Africa charters its course and manages its natural resources. Mr. Ayuk, the founder and CEO of the pan-African Centurion Law Group (CenturionLawFirm.com) and an outspoken champion of African entrepreneurship and leadership, describes the need to change the narrative on energy in Africa. “The simple fact is oil and gas provide African countries with the fastest route to prosperity,” he says, “Natural resources are a pedestal for building nations, building economies and building wealth.”
He added: “In 2017, we are forging our own ways of winning in this complex industry. Africa is not just a source of raw materials for the world. This book demonstrates the Why and How true value of oil and gas in Africa is a source of innovation and wealth (job) creation.” Among the nine examples in the book, Big Barrels describes the rapid development of Equatorial Guinea from one of the world’s economic backwaters to a leading light in Central Africa; how Ghana turned to its active civic society to deal with its oil windfall only a few years ago; and how Tanzania is being shaped in response to global interest in its massive gas reserves. Big Barrels: African Oil and Gas and the Quest for Prosperity will officially launch at the Africa Oil & Power (www.AfricaOilAndPower.com) conference in Cape Town on June 5-7, 2017. The book can be ordered on Amazon. https://naija247news.com/2017/05/03/nj-ayuksbig-barrels-leads-the-way-forward-to-africa-oil-andgas-2-0

Ethiopian First African to Head WHO Source: Al Jazeera
E
thiopia’s Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been elected as the new head of the World Health Organization (WHO), becoming the first African to lead the United Nations health agency. Ethiopia’s former health minister received more than half the votes in the first round and eventually won a decisive third-round election on Tuesday to beat the UK’s David Nabarro to the job. The list of three shortlisted candidates also included Sania Nishtar from Pakistan. “All roads lead to universal coverage. This will be my central priority,” Tedros, as he is widely known, told health ministers at the WHO’s annual assembly after his election.
“At present, only about a half of the world’s people have access to health care without impoverishment. This needs to improve dramatically.” Tedros was widely seen as having the support of about 50 African votes, but questions about his role in restricting human rights and Ethiopia’s cover-up of a cholera outbreak surfaced late in the race, threatening to tarnish his campaign. Tedros will begin his five-year term after Margaret Chan, a former Hong Kong health director, steps down on June 30 having spent 10 years in the job. Chan leaves a mixed legacy after WHO’s slow response to West Africa’s Ebola epidemic in 20132016, which killed 11,300 people. Six candidates had stood to take the helm at the WHO, which is
tasked with combating outbreaks and chronic diseases, before Tedros took the floor at the WHO’s annual ministerial assembly. The job has never before been earned through a competitive election, and health officials from all over the globe thronged the assembly hall in the UN’s Geneva headquarters, where voting took place behind closed doors. Chan, in a speech on Monday, urged ministers to tackle inequalities as a “guiding ethical principle”. “Scientific evidence is the bedrock of policy. Protect it. No one knows whether evidence will retain its persuasive power in what many now describe as a post-truth world,” she said. http://africanleadership.co.uk/ethiopianbecomes-first-african-to-head-who/

Africa Records Growth in the Face of Global Recession By: Barnabas Thondhlana
D
espite challenging times occasioned by the global economic recession, Africa continues to post resilient growth, with growth expected to pick up from 2.2% last year to 3.4% this year, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has said. “These averages hide exceptional growth performance of many countries. In 2016, 12 countries grew at over 5% and 20 countries grew by 3-5%. Africa’s head is above waters in rising waters of global recession. “Africa is resilient. But we must move quickly to unlock greater growth rates that will substantially drive down poverty and support faster diversification of the economies,” Adesina said in his keynote address at the on-going AfDB annual meeting in India.
He said confidence in Africa and its potential was what drove the African Development Bank. The new kick in the AfDB’s steps for Africa was driven by the bank’s adopted High 5s strategy: • Light up and power Africa; • Feed Africa; • Industrialize Africa; • Integrate Africa; and • Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa. “The High 5s will accelerate Africa’s development. The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) independent analysis and report shows that Africa will achieve 90% of the SDGs and 90% of Agenda 2063 by focusing on these High 5s. The distance between vision and reality is action,” Adesina said. The bank president said in 2016, the AfDB approved $10.5 billion – the highest ever in Bank’s history. “We disbursed US $6.5 billion – the highest ever by the Bank. The Bank is delivering for Africa and we are ready to do more.” He gave a breakdown of what the AfDB achieved in 2016 alone in “action units”: • 3.3 million Africans benefitted from new electricity connections;
• 3.7 million Africans benefited from improved access to water and sanitation; • 5.7 million Africans benefitted from improvements to agriculture; • 9.3 million Africans benefitted from access to better health care services; • 7 million Africans benefitted from improved access to transport. “We did all these, while implementing major institutional reforms to improve institutional efficiency and effectiveness,” he said. The focus of this year’s annual meeting is on the second High 5: Feed Africa. “To develop with pride, Africa must feed itself, Adesina said.

“Africa’s food import bill stands at US $35 billion per year and is estimated to grow to US $110 billion per year by 2025. This has negative consequences on macroeconomic and fiscal stability. Africa must rise up quickly and unlock the full potential of its agriculture. “Africa has 65% of the uncultivated arable land left in the world to feed 9 billion by 2050, so what Africa does with agriculture today will determine the future of food in the world.” He said the key was to turn Africa’s natural comparative advantage in agriculture into a competitive advantage. There was need to accelerate access to highquality seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, mechanized services and finance. And agriculture had to be taken as
a business all across Africa. “Africa needs to industrialize its agricultural sector to unlock wealth. To achieve this, Africa needs to establish Staple Crop Processing Zones and Agroindustrial Zones – fully-enabled with physical infrastructure – to attract private agribusinesses to locate in rural areas, create market pull for produce of farmers, and reduce high post-harvest losses in the supply chains. “By doing so, we will turn rural areas from zones of economic misery to new zones of economic prosperity. We will be able to empower African countries to add greater value for what they produce. Our massive cotton production will translate into textile
and garments. “After all the price of apparels never go down, even when price of cotton declines.” He lamented the fact that Africa produces 75% of the world’s cocoa, but receives only 2% of the US $100-billion annual chocolate market. “African farmers sweat, while others eat sweets. While the price of cocoa has hit an all-time low, profits of global manufacturers of chocolates have hit an all-time high. It’s time to process Africa’s cocoa in Africa, for we must end Africa being at the bottom of global value chains,” Adesina said. http://africanleadership.co.uk/ africa-records-growth-in-the-faceof-recession/

Nigerian Tech Women Take Center Stage
T
he United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador W. Symington has recently honoured Nigerian women in technology, whom he said have strived to put the human race in outer space even before the invention of computers and the internet. The ambassador likend the honorees to the lead characters in a recent American movie. ‘Nigerian women are highly talented like the American women in the movie Hidden Figures,’ he said. Hidden Figures is a story about African-American women in the 1960s, who were employed to work as mathematicians by NASA. These women dedicated time and energy
in their job and were referred to as “human computers”. They gave no audience to recognition and denied promotion; they would go on to play crucial roles in the American space program. ‘It is an amazing story of women who found something that they love, and before there were computers and the Internet, these women made it possible to put the human race in outer space. You too can reach for the skies,’ the U.S. Ambassador said, with specific attention to Carolyn Seaman and Damilola Anwo-Ade, who are nominees among the participants in the 2017 TechWomen Exchange Program (www.scholarshipandgrants. com/scholarships/techwomenemerging-leaders-program-2017-for-
women-in-stem-to-study-in-the-usafully-funded). The other participants
are: Olamide Ayeni-Babjide, Ijeoma Vincent-Akpu, and Petra Nnamani. The TechWomen programme is a U.S. initiative to empower and connect women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The program is a five-week professional mentorship and exchange at leading technology companies in California’s Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. http://africanleadership.co.uk/ investors-urged-to-support-forest-andlandscape-restoration https://ng.usembassy.gov/u-sembassy-honors-nigerian-techwomen

One Africa:
J
Tell the US Government that North Africa is Africa Too!
oin with and support the United Africa Organization’s campaign to petition the U.S. Department of State to include the whole African continent under its Bureau of African Affairs.
Why? The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, led by Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson, currently excludes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara from its agenda. Instead, the aforementioned countries are grouped with the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, together with Iran, Iraq, Israel and others. This artificial distinction between North Africa and the rest of Africa
negatively impacts US foreign policy relations throughout the entire continent of Africa. We unequivocally reject the argument that North African countries are outside the scope of African affairs. North Africa is geographically and historically part of the African continent, and all fifty-three (53) independent African states, including North African countries, are represented in the African Union (AU). It would be far more productive for the State Department to engage with the entire continent of Africa, including North Africa, under its Bureau of African Affairs. We are one Africa, from the Cape to Cairo, indivisible and bound together! Therefore, no square inch of African
land should be excluded from African affairs.
Sign The Petition!!! Go to www.change.org/petitions/ one-africa-tell-us-state-departmentthat-north-africa-is-part-of-africa and sign the online petition to support this important proposition. Next tell everyone you know to sign.

parkerhousesausage.com) was started by Chicago entrepreneur, Judge H. Parker who came to Chicago from Montgomery County, Tennessee with little more than the conviction that there was a potential market for homemade sausage products prepared according to his mother’s recipes. By 1919 Judge Parker began selling his unique blend of herbs and spices mixed with flavorful, savory sausage from a horse drawn cart on a retail basis. Recognized as one of the oldest family owned businesses in the U.S. In 2014 Parker House expanded its product line to include chicken products including breakfast sausage, hot links, and smoked sausage.

Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America
S
by Ibram X. Kendi
ome Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America--more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as awardwinning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society. In this deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, K e n d i chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. Stamped
Ibram X. Kendi
from the Beginning uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to offer a window into the contentious debates between assimilationists and segregationists and between racists and antiracists. From Puritan minister Cotton Mather to Thomas Jefferson, from fiery abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison to brilliant scholar W.E.B. Du Bois to legendary anti-prison activist Angela Davis, Kendi shows how and why some of our leading proslavery and pro-civil rights thinkers have challenged or helped cement racist ideas in America. Contrary to popular conceptions, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. Instead, they were devised and honed by some of the most brilliant minds of each era. These intellectuals used their brilliance to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation's racial disparities in everything from wealth to health. And while racist ideas are easily produced and easily consumed, they can also be discredited. In shedding much-needed light on the murky history of racist ideas, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose them-and in the process, gives us reason to hope. www.amazon.com/Stamped-Beginning-Definitive-HistoryNational/dp/1568584636
Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America
S
by Michael Eric Dyson
hort, emotional, literary, powerful―Tears We Cannot Stop is the book that all Americans who care about the current and longburning crisis in race relations will want to read. As the country grapples with racist division at a level not seen since the 1960s, one man's voice soars above the rest with conviction and compassion. In his 2016 New York Times op-ed piece "Death in Black and White," Michael Eric Dyson
138 June 2017 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
moved a nation. Now he continues to speak out in Tears We Cannot Stop―a provocative and deeply personal call for change. Dyson argues that if we are to make real racial progress we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how Michael Eric Dyson black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted. "The time is at hand for reckoning with the past, recognizing the truth of the present, and moving together to redeem the nation for our future. If we don't act now, if you don't address race immediately, there very well may be no future." www.amazon.com/Tears-We-Cannot-Stop-America/ dp/1250135990/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
BLACKOUT: My 40
Years in the Music Business
S
by Paul Porter
ince 1976, when the busing riots in Boston sent me scrambling into the radio station at WRBB at Northeastern University, the music industry has been my life. During my very first stint in radio, I was Paul “Pure Love” Porter from midnight to 3 a.m., and I fell in love with the medium of radio and the impact I had on my community. Radio introduced me to women. Radio introduced me to cocaine. Radio introduced me to some of my best friends. And radio killed some of them too. Blackout is a ride through my whirlwind of media jobs, working for and with some of the music industry’s most colorful, well-known and scandalous players. Blackout is an explosive look at
the corruption that is running rampant in the industry. And Blackout is an inside account of how corporations erased Black identity from Black radio and mainstream music — and why I chose to fight back. Paul Porter has been a force in radio, music and television for four decades. His deep, seductive voice Paul Porter has resonated on the airwaves of many of the nation’s top-rated radio stations, and he spent 10 years at BET as Program Director, consultant and on-air talent. Paul’s expertise and activism have established him as a thought leader in the radio and music industry, and he is often sought out by major media outlets including CNN, Entertainment Tonight and FOX News to comment on music, culture and race. www.amazon.com/BLACKOUT-My-Years-Music-Business/ dp/1634923847
