On August 11th, celebrate the birthday of Alex Haley, an Pubisher/Editor-In-Chief American writer and the author of the 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Unbeknownst to Haley and others, his novel Roots would go on to inspire many African Americans and people around the world to begin tracing and investigating their ancestral roots; and contribute to the growing DNA ancestry tracking industry. Since his novel, we have seen another business sector directly benefit from Haley’s efforts, and that is the Family Reunion Industry. Hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, airlines and car rentals (just to name a few) exploded exponentially with the new surge and interest in Blacks wanting to reconnect with family members and re-ignite a tradition for some families, that had been dormant for decades. On August 15th, join us in wishing Congresswoman Maxine Waters a happy birthday. Waters has been a champion force for African Americans within the Democratic Party and her list of accomplishments is extensive. Of special note, in 2012 with the retirement of Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts), Aretha Franklin she became the ranking member of the House Financial animationoptions.com Services Committee. This is a key role for Waters, as she has championed causes that directly impact African American business owners – the needed access to capital resources to grow their businesses.

Trump Administration Moves to Revoke Obama-era Fuel Economy Standards By Paul A. Eisenstein
T
he White House announced Thursday that it is moving ahead on its much-anticipated plan to roll back the fuel economy mandate set by the Obama administration. The move is likely to mean fewer high-efficiency, zeropollution cars on the road. The previous guidelines, which were reached during Obama's first term, call for automakers to steadily reach a fleet average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 — though with credits and other modifications, the actual figure is expected to wind up in the low to mid-40 mpg range. Thursday's announcement means the new standard would be frozen at 2020 levels, around 37 mpg. Acting Environmental Protection Agency Chief Andrew Wheeler said the agency also intends to eliminate California’s authority to set its own automotive emissions rules — guidelines that have traditionally been tougher than those put in place by the EPA for the rest of the country. “We are delivering on President Trump’s promise to the American public that his administration would address and fix the current fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards,” said Wheeler in a statement. “Our proposal aims to strike the right regulatory balance based on the most recent information and create a 50-state solution that will enable more Americans to afford newer,
safer vehicles that pollute less.” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the Trump administration's actions a "dangerous assault on clean air and public health in California and across the nation." "President Trump's illegal and unjust attack on the vital clean air protections set by California and the 12 states that join it will choke our communities with smog," Pelosi said in a statement, promising that her state would "continue to work with automakers to overcome the Trump obstruction to build cleaner, more affordable and safe vehicles for our communities." During a conference call with reporters, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Deputy Administrator Heidi King said the mid-term review conducted by the Trump administration concluded the average new vehicle would increase in price by $2,340 by 2025 — with overall costs to the country estimated at $500 million long-term. As a result, the original, 54.5 mpg target would mean more expensive cars that many consumers couldn’t afford to buy. In turn, EPA Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum said that would have a “detrimental impact…on highway safety” by delaying the rollout of improved vehicle technology. The two agencies estimate the proposal could reduce U.S. highway fatalities
by 1,000 lives annually. Recently departed EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt outlined the administration’s plans on Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, earlier this year, setting in motion a series of public hearings as well as a meeting between Trump and auto industry leaders to discuss a rollback. Auto industry officials, notably including former Ford CEO Mark Fields, had vocally supported a rollback during meetings with the then-new president in 2017. Facing heavy pressure from consumer lobbying groups, they have largely been silent about a cut in mileage targets in recent months and, in some cases, have even appeared to come out in favor of keeping the Obama-era mileage targets. Ford CEO Jim Hackett and Chairman Bill Ford recently issued a statement saying, “We support increasing clean car standards through 2025 and are not asking for a rollback.” But Ford, along with most of the rest of the industry, does want to eliminate the California waiver. “From the automakers' perspective, they’ll be happy not to deal with CARB,” (the California Air Resources Board that sets emissions targets), said Dave Sargent, the head of automotive research for J.D. Power and Associates. “What they want more than anything is one set of rules. Multiple sets of rules get expensive”

to meet, as that can mean designing one model for states following the California rules and another model for the rest of the country. Environmental groups, as well as California officials, like CARB chief Mary Nichols, have made it clear they intend to fight any plan that would eliminate the Golden State’s rule-making authority and while Nichols had said earlier this year that she was open to discussing a mileage rollback, she was skeptical that it could be justified. "Our analysis clearly indicates that the car companies are fully
capable of meeting the CAFE standards and they are able to do so with great savings for consumers," echoed Jack Gillis, the Consumer Federation of America's Director of Public Affairs. California not only supports that target but has put in place guidelines setting a minimum number of zero-emissions vehicles that all but the smallest carmakers would have to sell in that state over the coming years. California is already the country’s largest market for what are commonly referred to as ZEVs, but automakers complain
it will be tougher to comply in the other states that have adopted the clean-car rules, such as Vermont. California and 16 other states, along with the District of Columbia, filed a lawsuit on May 2 challenging the planned CAFE rollback. Further legal action is expected to follow now that the administration will attempt to block the California CO2 waiver. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/ trump-administration-revokes-obama-erafuel-economy-standards-n896846

Pence details plan for Creation of Space Force in what would be the Sixth Branch of the Military by Christian Davenport and Dan Lamothe
V
ice President Pence laid out an ambitious plan Thursday that would begin creating a military command dedicated to space and establish a “Space Force” as the sixth branch of the U.S. military as soon as 2020, the first since the Air Force was formed shortly after World War II. Pence warned of the advancements that potential adversaries are making and issued what amounted to a call to arms to preserve the military’s dominance in space. “Just as we’ve done in ages past, the United States will meet the emerging threats on this new battlefield,” he said in a speech at the Pentagon. “The time has come to establish the United States Space Force.” But the monumental task of standing up a new military department, which would require approval by a Congress that shelved the idea last year, may require significant new spending and a reorganization of the largest bureaucracy in the world. And the idea has already run into fierce opposition inside and outside the Pentagon, particularly from the Air Force, which could lose some of its responsibilities. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last year that he opposed a new department of the military “at a time when we are focused on reducing overhead and integrating joint warfighting functions.” This week, Mattis said the Pentagon and the White House “are in complete alignment” on the need to view space as a warfighting domain. But he stopped short of endorsing a full-fledged Space Force. In a briefing with reporters after Pence’s speech, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan suggested that Mattis’s comments opposing the Space Force were made at a different time, before the Pentagon received a bolstered
budget. White House officials have been working with national security leaders to aggressively move ahead without Congress. The first step is creating a new U.S. Space Command by the end of the year, which would be led by a four-star general, the way the Pentagon’s IndoPacific Command oversees those regions. The new command would pull space experts from across the armed services, and there would be a separate acquisitions office, dedicated to buying satellites and developing new technology to help the military win wars in space. After the announcement Thursday, President Trump tweeted, “Space Force all the way!” For months, Trump has been calling for a Space Force, a new, free-standing military department, with its own chain of command and uniforms. In a letter to supporters Thursday, the Trump 2020 campaign said it would sell a line of gear that could come with a logo of their choosing — including one labeled “Mars Awaits” — to commemorate “President Trump’s new Space Force,” according to a copy of the email — a move that fueled criticism that the effort was motivated by politics. The White House intends to work with lawmakers to introduce legislation by early next year, a senior administration official said, with the hope of standing up the first new military department since the Air Force was formed in 1947. Some members of Congress and military leaders have been warning that space is no longer a peaceful sanctuary, but a domain of conflict that needs more attention and resources. Space is vital to the way the United States wages war; the Pentagon’s satellites

are used for missile defense warnings, guiding precision munitions and providing communications and reconnaissance. Russia and China have made significant advancements, challenging the United States’ assets in space. In 2007, China blew up a dead weather satellite with a missile, creating a massive debris cloud in orbit, which Pence called “a highly provocative demonstration of China’s growing capability to militarize space.” China also has demonstrated the ability to hit satellites in a much deeper orbit where the military parks some of its most sensitive assets. In his speech, Pence acknowledged the difficulties in establishing a new service, and said the Pentagon would create an assistant secretary of defense for space, a top-level civilian who will report to the defense secretary “to oversee the growth and expansion of the sixth branch of service.” The official must sort out many details, including how the Pentagon would recruit for the Space Force and compete for resources within the Pentagon. Even basic details, such as what uniforms and what rank structure the Space Force would use, must be decided. Some members of Congress advocated last year for creating a Space Corps in the Air Force Department, similar to how the Marine Corps is part of the Navy Department. Elevating the proposal to create a new department will mean additional Pentagon bureaucracy, critics say. Deborah James, who served as Air Force Secretary in the Obama administration, said Trump’s decision t o create a full new department is “a solution in search of a problem.”
Before Trump’s announcement in June that he wanted a Space Force, Mattis and Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson had cautioned against creating a new Pentagon bureaucracy to address space issues. James said she thinks they’re now “stuck because the president announced this by surprise.” Efforts to reach several senior Air Force officials were not successful Thursday. Wilson was traveling on business and not at the Pentagon when Pence made his announcement. Gen. David L. Goldfein, the Air Force’s top officer, and Gen. Stephen Wilson, the vice chief, sat quietly in the Pentagon auditorium as Pence spoke. Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, the Pentagon’s vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a briefing with reporters that the Pentagon is very much in favor of establishing a Space Command as a way to speed up efforts in space. But when it comes to establishing a new branch of the military, Selva said, “there’s an obligation” to present a set of options that can be presented to Congress. “He’s the Commander in Chief,” Selva said of the president. The White House has pushed for Congress to invest an additional $8 billion in national security space systems over the next five years. The new command and reorganization “should be budget-neutral,” Scott Pace, the executive secretary of the National Space Council, said in an interview. “However, going forward, there probably will need to be an increase in resources to buy improved capabilities and more warfighters as the Space Force matures.” After Pence’s speech, Reps. Mike D. Rogers (R-Ala.) and Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), members of the House Armed Services Committee, praised the move, saying a Space Force “will result in a safer, stronger America.” “We have been warning for years of the need to protect our space assets and to develop more capable space systems,” they said in a joint statement. In his speech, Pence urged the audience to support the administration’s effort to create the department. Speaking to a room made up mostly of U.S. troops in uniform, Pence said their “commander in chief is going to continue to work tirelessly toward this goal, and we expect you all to do the same.” “The only thing we can’t afford is inaction,” he said. www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/pence-details-plan-forcreation-of-space-force-in-what-would-be-the-sixth-branch-of-themilitary/2018/08/09/0b40b8d0-9bdc-11e8-8d5e-c6c594024954_story. html?utm_term=.ffbf52a1cb4a IMAGE CREDITS: ynot1989.deviantart.com

innesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar, the nation's first Somali-American legislator, has won a crowded Democratic primary to replace Rep. Keith Ellison in Congress. Omar's victory Tuesday all but ensures she'll set another historic mark as the first Somali-American in Congress. Minnesota's 5th Congressional District includes Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs that tilt heavily Democratic. Omar positioned herself as the best-equipped to counter President Donald Trump's administration. She rose to national prominence after winning her legislative seat in 2016. The first-term lawmaker defeated former state House Speaker

Naturalized Americans Could Lose their Citizenship with Thousands of Cases Under Review
F
By Brenda Medina
ederal officials are reviewing the citizenship petition process of more than 2,500 people who became naturalized American citizens, in search of possible fraud committed during the process. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) told EFE news agency on Monday that about 100 of the 2,500 cases “have a reasonable suspicion” and were referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ will evaluate whether to initiate legal proceedings in these cases. Part of the process could include revoking a person’s U.S. citizenship, spokeswoman Claire Nicholson told EFE. The review is part of a multimillion-dollar effort by the Trump administration, which seeks to identify people who have committed fraud during the process to obtain citizenship or permanent residence, or who committed crimes before naturalizing and did not report them, officials have said. This summer, the government announced it tapped a group of lawyers and investigators, operating under Customs and Immigration, to review the naturalization procedures. USCIS staff has been reviewing potential cases for citizenship revocation since January 2017, the agency’s director, L. Francis Cissna, told The Associated Press.
The Department of Homeland Security (under which USCIS operates) also plans to devote more than $207.6 million in a separate initiative involving the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE will use the funds to hire new agents for the National Security Investigations division to look for possible citizenship and green card fraud, according to ICE’s budget plan for 2019. One of the tasks is to identify applicants who were ordered to leave the country but stayed behind and naturalized under another identity. To determine possible cases of fraud, researchers focus on fingerprint records on deportation orders from the 1990s and prior years, which were not digitized. This information is now being compared with more recent files. The authorities plan to refer about 1,600 of these types of cases to the DOJ. Efforts to revoke citizenship are not new but have accelerated under the Trump administration. Between 1990 and 2017, there were 305 legal cases of denaturalization, an average of 11 per year. Under former President Barack Obama, the number of cases increased to 15 in 2016, his
last full year in office. The number of cases doubled to 30 in 2017 under President Donald Trump and is expected to be higher this year. Immigration activists and attorneys have said they fear the plan is to scare immigrants. They said the measures could affect people who committed fraud decades ago. “I’m worried that people who have been citizens for a long time will now be targeted for denaturalization, and that the effort to defend against a federal denaturalization claim is so expensive that people will just give up,” Matthew Hoppock, a Kansas City immigration lawyer who has been following the changes in denaturalization policy, told the Herald in July. The USCIS said in a statement to the Herald that people who have used a false identity to naturalize shouldn’t be surprised to be referred to the Department of Justice to withdraw their citizenship. “We go to great lengths to ensure individuals aren’t susceptible to instances of error, misunderstanding, or special circumstances,” the statement said. www.miamiherald.com/news/local/ immigration/article216693995.html

the average number of claims per day keeps climbing the longer Mr. Trump stays in office. In fact, in June and July, the president averaged 16
counted nearly 150 claims that the president has repeated at least three times, some with breathtaking frequency.
socialmediatoday.com its Fact Checker’s database that analyses, categorises and tracks every suspect statement uttered by the American president. It turns out that this was when the president decided to turn on the spigots of false and misleading claims. As of day 558, he has made 4,229 Trumpian claims – an increase of 978 in just two months. That is an overall average of nearly 7.6 claims a day. When they first started this project for the president’s first 100 days, he averaged 4.9 claims a day. But
claims a day. Put another way, in his first year as president, Mr. Trump made 2,140 false or misleading claims. Now, just six months later, he has almost doubled that total. On 5 July, the president reached a new daily high of 79 false and misleading claims. On a monthly basis, June and July rank in first and second place, with 532 and 446 claims, respectively. Trump has a proclivity to repeat, over and over, many of his false or misleading statements. They have
Almost one third of Mr. Trump’s claims – 1,293 – relate to economic issues, trade deals or jobs. He frequently takes credit for jobs created before he became president or company decisions with which he had no role. He cites his “incredible success” in terms of job growth, even though annual job growth under his presidency has been slower than the last five years of Barack Obama’s term. Just on trade, the president has made 432 false or misleading claims. He frequently gets the size

of trade deficits wrong or presents the numbers in a misleading fashion. He also indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of economics. In June and July, more than 20 times the president said some variation of the claim that the United States “lost” money on trade deficits. Just about every economist would give a student an “F” for making such a statement. A trade deficit simply means people in one country are buying more goods from another country than people in the second country are buying from the first. Trade deficits are also affected by macroeconomic factors, such as the relative strength of currencies, economic growth rates, and savings and investment rates. Not surprisingly, immigration is the top single source of Mr. Trump’s misleading claims, now totalling 538. Thirty times just in the past five months, for instance, the president has falsely claimed his long promised border wall with Mexico is being built, even though congress has denied funding for it.
But moving up the list quickly are claims about the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether people in the Trump campaign were in any way connected to it. The president has made 378 statements about the Russia probe, using hyperbolic claims of “worse than Watergate,” “McCarthyism” and, of course, “witch hunt”. He often asserts the Democrats colluded with the Russians, even though the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign were victims of Russian activities, as emails were hacked and then released via WikiLeaks. All told, nearly 160 times the president has made claims suggesting the Russia probe is made up, a hoax or a fraud. Misleading claims about taxes – now at 336 – are also a common feature of Trump’s speeches. Eighty-eight times, he has made the false assertion that he passed the biggest tax cut in US history. On foreign policy, the president consistently misstates NATO spending. More than 60 times, he has falsely said the United States pays as much as 90% of the
alliance’s costs and that other NATO members “owe” money. But he is conflating overall defence spending with NATO obligations – and the United States, unlike many Nato allies, has global responsibilities. They also have catalogued the president’s many “flip-flops”, which is when a politician shifts position on an issue without acknowledging that he or she did so. Given that the president has been in office more than 18 months, they decided to begin phasing out the listing of his astonishing flip-flop on the accuracy of the unemployment rate. During the campaign, he repeatedly claimed that it was a phoney number and the real unemployment rate was really many times higher. Now, he regularly touts unemployment statistics as proof of his economic agenda’s success, though he does not always get them right. His refusal to acknowledge this shift has been frustrating, but even flipflops have a statute of limitations. www.independent.co.uk/news/ world/americas/donald-trumpfalse-misleading-claims-us-factcheck-a8474016.html

Hundreds of Newspapers Denounce Trump's Attacks on Media in Coordinated Editorials By James Doubek

ore than 300 news publications across the country are joining together to defend the role of a free press and denounce President Trump's ongoing attacks on the news media in coordinated editorials publishing Thursday, according to a tally by The Boston Globe (www.bostonglobe. com/metro/2018/08/14/newspapersj o i n - g l o b e - e ff o r t - f r e e d o m - p r e s s editorials/yvvZ0yepu8j1lJ3G3qYbSJ/ story.html).
The project was spearheaded by staff members of the editorial page at the Globe, who write: "This relentless assault on the free press has dangerous consequences. We asked editorial boards from around the country – liberal and conservative, large and small — to join us today to address this fundamental threat in their own words." Marjorie Pritchard, the Globe's
deputy managing editor of the editorial page who led the effort, told NPR's Morning Edition, "This editorial project is not against the Trump administration's agenda. It's a response to put us into the public discourse and defend the First Amendment." She said the reason to publish the editorials now was "because the press needs to have a voice on this. ... We've done individual editorials,
In a column called "A Free Press Needs You," The New York Times' editorial board writes that "Criticizing the news media — for underplaying or overplaying stories, for getting something wrong — is entirely right. News reporters and editors are human, and make mistakes. Correcting them is core to our job. But insisting that truths you don't like are 'fake news' is dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy. And calling journalists the 'enemy of the people' is dangerous, period." Small publications across the country participated as well. Charlie Smith of The ColumbianProgress of Columbia, Miss., wrote that newspapers "are the ultimate friend of the people. To attack them is to attack our own selves." "Americans may not like the news they see or hear but they should not hold that against those who report it," TriCorner News from The Lakeville Journal Co. in Lakeville, Conn., writes. "Maybe if they focused on doing their jobs instead of worrying about their precious reputation the American people might start getting real, honest journalism again." Jack Shafer argues in Politico that the current effort "is sure to backfire." "It will provide Trump with
circumstantial evidence of the existence of a national press cabal that has been convened solely to oppose him. When the editorials roll off the press on Thursday, all singing from the same script, Trump will reap enough fresh material to whale on the media for at least a month." Trump has made bashing the news media — "horrible, horrendous people" — a staple of his candidacy and a constant throughout his presidency. He has tweeted at least
seven times since June referring to the news media in some way as the "enemy of the people." On Thursday morning, the president returned to the topic. "THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY," Trump wrote on Twitter, adding that it is "pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people." www.npr.org/2018/08/16/639125774/hundredsof-newspapers-denounce-trumps-attacks-onmedia-in-coordinated-editorial

eyoncé’s latest Vogue cover has been birthed into the world, and it is lovely. Which is a compliment. It’s historic, because it’s the first cover shot by an African American photographer. Tyler Mitchell. His technique is powerful. He situates the viewer face-to-face with Beyoncé in a way that feels predigital. But then. What? Beyoncé offers up a sidelong glance that’s part Mona Lisa and part proud, aloof, self-confident, regal black woman. She offers up the

Beyoncé brand. And while society has not reached a point at which the full humanity of black women is taken as a given and this full-throated message of self-worth bears repeating again and again, it does not negate the sense of Beyoncé déjà-vu. Mitchell’s work is a milestone in the magazine’s 126year history. Vogue also reports that, at 23, Mitchell is also among the youngest photographers to shoot a cover. Mitchell was among a handful of photographers Vogue editors suggested for the Beyoncé story and, recognizing the possibility of making history, the singer selected him. Beyoncé says "I’m in a place of gratitude right now. I am accepting of who I am. I will continue to explore every inch of my soul and every part of my artistry. I want to learn more, teach more, and live in full. I’ve worked long and hard to be able to get to a place where I can choose to surround myself with what fulfills and inspires me." www.msn.com/en-us/music/celebrity/beyoncé-inher-own-words-her-life-her-body-her-heritage/arBBLz8pG?ocid=spartandhp www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-

pageant was unfairly restricted to white women. In 1950 the pageant had abolished a rule that excluded black contestants, but the lily-white pageant hadn’t changed. In 1967, J. Morris Anderson, a Philadelphia businessman, found this bias additionally troubling. He had two daughters, both of whom expressed interest in growing up to “be Miss America.” What does a dad do when he knows his daughters are dreaming an impossible dream? He gathers his resources and starts a pageant of his own, Miss Black America. View the short documentary on the creation of the Miss Black America pageant at: www.youtube. com/watch?v=t94lD1qJQKc.

For some reason, Princess Tiana’s facial features are changed and she looks more ambiguous – her skin is a few shades lighter and her natural hair is all over her head. That in itself is unrealistic – many pointed out – given how a Black woman’s hair that has been straightened or pressed or permed, wouldn’t just revert back to its natural state. https://thegrio.com/2018/08/20/disney-princesstiana/

It was a feat Biles had never accomplished in any major gymnastics competition, and the first women’s sweep at the competition since Dominique Dawes did so in 1994, according to USA Today. The win marks Biles’ fifth National Championships all-around win in six years, with the only miss coming during her hiatus from competition in 2017. Five championships gives Biles the most of any women in the history of USA Gymnastics. What made the sweep even more impressive is that the runner-up to Biles was none other than reigning world champion Morgan Hurd. Even with that level

Luins Williams, Profile of Success

uins Williams says “The sale starts with no,” recalling how Premier Label Water Company (http://plwc.net), the custom labeled bottled water marketing company that he founded in 1992 landed its first customer. “Everyone wants to be your second customer, no one wants to be your first,” Williams says. “They want to know: Who have you done this for and how successful were you?” Premier Label Water Co. was one of the first companies in the United States to market its customers’ brands through private
label bottled water. Williams came up with the idea in his home city of San Francisco while attending a Giants baseball game. “The water they sold at the stadium was $2.50 for a bottle of Crystal Geyser. I thought, if this bottle did not have Crystal Geyser on the label and instead, we put the Giants logo on it this would be the least expensive souvenir in the whole stadium.” At that time, the Giants were far from a world championship and Williams was far from being successful. But both would go on to make history. Williams set out to find his first customer, and he knew it had to be a big one, a win that he could hold up as a trophy for future clients. He set his sights on colleges and universities, zeroing in on Stanford where a school representative became his new best friend. “I must have called that man about 125 times,” Williams recalls with infectious laughter. He tried to persuade the Stanford
buyer to invest in a pallet of water, 72 cases. He purchased 10. Williams recalls the exchange vividly. “He said, ‘you bring the bottles down here and put them in the store,’ and I said, if they don’t sell, I’ll take them back and I’ll never phone you again.” Williams didn’t have to make another call. “The man phoned me back three days later and asked if I still had the pallet.” Students, staff, faculty, parents, campus visitors were all thirsty for Stanford water, including the Gap Founder and CEO Don Fischer who personally called Williams after grabbing a bottle at a University donor (alumni) event. The Gap and its entire umbrella of businesses, including Old Navy and Banana Republic, became that famous second customer with orders so large that Fischer sent Williams an advance on payment to make sure that he could keep up with production. Williams was always focused on quality. “There’s a great deal of responsibility when it comes to selling a consumable product. We take that very seriously,” Williams says. It’s been a long time since Williams carted bottles to his customers. Premier Label Water Co. currently ships millions of bottles per year with the help of bottling co-packers, strategically located throughout the nation. Williams and his wife of 15 years, Maureen Williams, field orders from their building on Crenshaw Boulevard near Adams.

else can you do? Tequila? No. Vodka? No. We didn’t know how to make those spirits. But Maureen said, ‘you better stop telling them no’. So, with a push from Maureen, who is also a veteran of business and customer service, in 2010 we thought “we’re in California, let’s make sparkling wine” and that’s
license to sell a consumable product with the US Army logo. It took the Williamses four years to win the contract through determined dealing and confidence in their product. Today, the online sale of each bottle of US Army water supports veterans causes, continuing to define Williams as a creative and dogged entrepreneur. After more than 25 years in business, Williams is as persistent today as he was on day one. “As we started growing, we had the opportunity to bid on different projects,” Williams says. “The hotels were trying to work with fewer vendors that they knew could be trusted to bring a quality product on time. So, they asked us, what
when the Williamses elevated their output to include sparkling wine. That venture bubbled over into the popular label, Moreno BHLV. (https://shopmorenobhlv.com) Two varietals Rose and Brut, sold online and in stores nationwide, are poured from keepsake luxury bottles adorned with a shimmering “M” of Swarovski crystals. The move to sparkling wine pushed Williams into marketing special glass bottles of water including one that premiered in the last year of the Obama presidency and is still hugely popular all over the country and will soon be available at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. “Obama is always going to be the

first black President of the United States, and the Obama water is a monster hit,” Williams says giving credit to the support of the African American community for his continued success. “Everyone has to be important to somebody in order for you to stay in business,” Williams says with gratitude. He recalls reading; how Coca-Cola’s first major fans, was a black barbershop in Atlanta, which caused Coca-Cola early concerns because the company didn’t want to be known as a beverage just for black people. “My water and wine are for everyone,” Williams says. Williams also shares his expertise with future black entrepreneurs. “People call me all the time, and ask my advice and, when I can, I see what I can do to help them. There are always people who dream of doing things and I want to see them succeed.” Our business is headquartered where it should be, in the neighborhood that supports us, and we support it. I wholeheartedly suggest being part of your community and joining the Los Angeles Black Business Association you can never go wrong helping those that help you. One piece of advice that continues to motivate Williams came from his mother, who supported his entrepreneurial ventures ever since he was a child. “My mom’s big thing was follow through, follow through, follow through. Be sure to always follow through. That’s something that I do. If you say you’re going to do it by god make every effort to make it happen.” http://plwc.net/ https://shopmorenobhlv.com www.buyobamawater.com

What Barack and I Talked About by Joe Biden
Barack Obama and Joe Biden at Dog Tag Bakery thegrio.com
laineygossip.com
Dear Friends—
I
had the chance to catch up with an old friend ecently. Barack and I met for lunch at Dog Tag Bakery (www.dogtagbakery.com) in Washington, DC — a great local outfit that helps veterans and their families gain valuable entrepreneurial experience and earn a certificate in business administration. They also make a mean ham sandwich. I wanted to share a little bit about what Barack and I talked about — because I think it's pertinent for all of us: We had a nice little discussion about what it means to be a vital participant in democracy. And how it starts with exercising your God-given right to have a say. It starts with voting. Join Barack and me, and millions of your fellow citizens, and make a commitment to vote this fall. It's about more than that, too. It's helping your elderly neighbor out with her trash. Reading out loud at a children's hospital. Helping to clean up your local highway in your free time. Or even simply patronizing a local business doing good work for the community — a
place like Dog Tag Bakery. Citizenship is a sacred duty — something we must live up to every day. Evident in how we treat each other, how and whether we stand up for each other — and yes, even in how we disagree with each other. It's about fellowship. I know it seems like we're hopelessly divided — like we're stuck in a political death match that we just can't get out of. But we're better than this. I've always believed that we are strongest when we are One America. Rich, poor, middle class. Black, white, Hispanic. Gay, straight, transgender. Folks like my family that came to this country a while ago, and the new immigrant coming today. My grandkids — and the Dreamer who sits next to them in the classroom. That's who we've always been, and who we can become again. Recommit to that founding principle, and let me know you'll vote this fall. We'll be in touch along the way with reminders, and

share some more of the leaders who are inspiring us all around the country. But in the meantime, go say hello to your neighbor. I mean it. That's what this is all about. Thank you. —Joe www.americanpossibilities. org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=americanposs&utm_ content=1+-+%0D%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09%09%09%09& utm_campaign=20180803lunchwithbarackwinner&source=20180 803lunchwithbarackwinner

HP Launches Bug Bounty Program to Discover Security Flaws in Printers By: Jeffrey Burt
H
P Inc. officials are rolling out a bug bounty program to more proactively find and deal with security flaws in some of its lines of business printers. The PC and printer maker is teaming up with Bugcrowd to run the program. Selected researchers will be able to receive awards of between $500 and $10,000 to find security flaws in a range of printers, including the vendor’s Enterprise LaserJet machines and multifunction printer (MFPs), such as the A3 and A4. The amount of the award will be determined by the severity of the discovered vulnerabilities, according to company officials. In the private program, researchers—who will be invited to join—will have to report the vulnerabilities to Bugcrowd, which will verify the flaws and determine the award for each one. Bugcrowd is one of several companies that uses a crowdsourced model to find vulnerabilities. An increasing number of vendors are using such programs to find vulnerabilities before cyber-criminals do, according to Bugcrowd officials. In the company’s recent report, “2018 State of Bug Bounty,” Bugcrowd officials noted the increasing shortage of skilled cyber-security professionals—an estimated 1.5 million unfilled security positions worldwide by 2020—as well as the rise of vulnerabilities and the rapidly changing computing environment as reasons why more companies are embracing bug
bounty programs. “Bug bounty and vulnerability disclosure programs have the ability to bring together tens of thousands of the brightest minds in security research, to uncover seven times more high priority vulnerabilities than traditional assessment methods,” they said in the report. HP officials said their program, announced July 31, was the first of its kind for printers. The systems are becoming increasingly connected to corporate networks, making them part of the larger internet of things (IoT) and another attack avenue for cyber-criminals looking to access critical company data. According to Bugcrowd’s report, IoT devices are among the top five critical attack surfaces, joining others on the list such as web front end systems, APIs, x86 servers, cloud environments and mobile devices. The top emerging cyber-threats are focused on endpoint devices and the total number of printer vulnerabilities across the industry have jumped 21% over the past year, according to Bugcrowd officials. “As we navigate an increasingly complex world of cyber threats, it’s paramount that industry leaders leverage every resource possible to deliver trusted, resilient security from the firmware up,” Shivaun Albright, HP's chief technologist of print security, said in a statement. Analysts have said that businesses don’t tend to see printers as a significant security concern,
which makes them inviting targets for cyber-attacks. IDC analysts have argued that companies don’t emphasis printer security enough, finding in one survey that the number of respondents who said print security was very important was 26% less than those who said IT security was very important. Meanwhile more than 25% of respondents said they had to deal with a significant IT security breach and that a quarter of those incidents involved printers. HP last year had to address several printer vulnerability issues, including having to develop firmware patches in November 2017 to close vulnerabilities in more than 50 enterprise-class printer models impacted by an arbitrary code execution bug. retha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul," died Thursday in her home City of Detroit after battling pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type. Her death was confirmed by her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn. She was 76. Franklin sold more than 75 million Rev. Jesse Jackson, Atty. Tom Todd and records during her life, making her one Congressman Louis Stokes premier.org.uk of the best-selling artists of all time. She took soul to a new level and inspired generations of singers who came after her. "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart," Franklin's family wrote in a statement. "We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds. "We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time." Aretha Franklin came close when she sang one word: "Respect." Respect" was written by the great Otis Redding. In his version, a man is pleading, offering his woman anything she wants in exchange for her respect. He sang: "Hey little girl, you're sweeter than honey / And I'm about to give you all of my money / But all I want you to do / Is just give it, give it / Respect when I come home ..." Aretha changed those lyrics to demand parity. "Oooh, continues on page 40 39 August 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
Tribute - Aretha Franklin your kisses," she sang, "Sweeter than honey / And guess what? / So is my money ..." In her hands, "Respect" became an empowering song — for black women and for all women. It was a No. 1 hit in 1967, and it became her signature song. Franklin was 25 years old when "Respect" was released. But she had been singing since she was a small child in her father's New Bethel Baptist Church. "Someone found a footstool in the office and put it here on the stage, and they put it there for me to be seen because I was so small," Franklin told NPR's Morning Edition in 2004. Aretha Franklin was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tenn. — but she was raised mostly in Detroit. Her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was a famous preacher, and her childhood was steeped in both music and the burgeoning civil rights movement. Her family was close friends with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who often stayed at their home. Some of the most important gospel artists of the day came to visit regularly as well, including Clara Ward and the Famous Ward Singers, Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke. It was Franklin's father who introduced her to the recording industry. Nicknamed "the man with the million-dollar voice," C.L. Franklin was among the first Christian ministers to record his sermons (making dozens for the JVB and Chess labels) and to do radio broadcasts of his Sunday addresses; his 1953 sermon "The Eagle Stirreth Her Nest" is part of the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Franklin told PBS's American Masters in 1988 that when she was a child, her father would coach her. "He would give me different records to listen to, to see if I could emulate them on the piano, different vocalists to listen to." These were gospel artists like Ward and Jackson. But the young Aretha listened to popular music, too. And as she toured with her father she met R&B artists like Fats Domino and Bobby Bland. There was also her Detroit neighborhood: It was filled with future Motown stars like Diana Ross, the Four Tops and Smokey Robinson, who grew up right around the corner from her. Franklin made her first album for JVB when she was just 14 years old. It was a collection of gospel songs that included "Precious Lord (Take My Hand)." Four years later, she confided to her father that she longed to cross over from gospel to secular music. So C.L. Franklin helped her make a demo that led to a contract with Columbia Records, initially working with the legendary producer John Hammond. Decades later, Hammond told NPR that when he first heard her, his response was, "'This is the best thing I've heard since Billie Holiday. Who is she?"
In 1961, the bluesy "Won't Be Long," f r o m her first Columbia album, Aretha: W i t h The Ray Bryant Combo, became Franklin's first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100. After making seven records for Columbia over a sixyear span, she signed with Atlantic Records — and that's where she became the "Queen of Soul." At first, Atlantic wanted her to record at the Stax studios in Memphis, but Stax did not want to pay for the sessions.

merica has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance. Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song. President Barack H. Obama
Instead, Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler brought Franklin to the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, though Franklin eventually recorded most of her first Atlantic album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, in New York with backing musicians from Muscle Shoals. In any case, the Wexler/Franklin pairing proved magical. Franklin brought her own material to the label, and Wexler encouraged her to play piano in her recording sessions. And from 1967 to the mid-'70s, Franklin released a string of classics. The first was "I Never Loved A Man" — with her sisters as backup singers — followed by "Do Right Woman — Do Right Man," "Natural Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Think," "Rock Steady" and "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)." At the same time Franklin was turning out hits, she was also deeply involved in the civil rights movement. As she told American Masters, her father was a close friend of King's. "My dad brought him to Detroit," she recalled, "and introduced him to the city of Detroit through the New Bethel Baptist Church." Comedian and activist Dick Gregory told American Masters that the Franklins helped fund the movement, directly and through access to Aretha. "If Martin needed money," he said, "he could make one phone call to Rev. Franklin, and that money was there — and also that Rev. Franklin could deliver his daughter, over what managers and record executives would say." And Franklin and Harry Belafonte toured together to help raise money for the civil rights movement. Franklin's songs helped the nation through the assassination of King and through the Vietnam War. She told NPR in 2004 that veterans have told her how her songs sustained them. "On occasion," she noted, "I hear that some of them helped them get through the
service — and I'm delighted by that." In 1980, Franklin switched labels again — this time to Arista Records, where she began to work with producers like Luther Vandross and Narada Michael Walden. Her pairing with Walden resulted in a string of hits in 1985: "Freeway of Love," "Who's Zoomin' Who?" and a duet with The Eurythmics' Annie Lenox, "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves," produced by The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. She played with the Rolling Stones, and when tenor Luciano Pavarotti became ill, she filled in for him at the 1998 Grammy Awards, singing the aria "Nessun Dorma" from the Puccini opera Turandot. For all her professional success, Franklin had a turbulent personal life. Her mother died before Aretha was 10 years old. Her father was shot in an attempted robbery and lingered in a coma for five years before he died in 1984. She had two children before she was 17, and two more later during two marriages that both ended in divorce. She struggled with her weight and with smoking. Franklin continued performing, but she rarely toured because of a fear of flying. Still, in 2009, she sang for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Aretha Franklin received just about every award a singer can get, including 18 Grammys (plus the Recording Academy's Grammy Legend Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award), the Presidential Medal of Freedom and, in 1987, an induction as the first woman into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She performed until she couldn't anymore — because being the Queen of Soul was second nature to her. www.npr.org/2018/08/16/532687119/aretha-franklin-thequeen-of-soul-dead-at-76 Additional reporting by NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas

n 2016, the Nduom family acquired the historic Illinois Service Federal Savings (ISF Bank) (www.gnbankusa.com). The family now is rebranding the bank as GN Bank (www.gnbankghana.com) to align with its international banking operations. GN Bank internationally has over 330 branches. “We want something different to come out of the South Side of Chicago,” said Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, president of Groupe Nduom and chairman of ISF Bank.
“We’re linking the South Side to the world through this traditional, black-owned bank.” At a time when available lending capital is decreasing for black-owned businesses, GN Bank will become one of the few remaining African American-owned banks operating in the United States. In Chicago, GN Bank will be a local bank that invests in Bronzeville and surrounding communities, treats its local customers with individual attention, and provides the high-
level banking expertise that customers have long enjoyed from this branch location of ISF Bank. Perhaps most important, GN Bank also is an international banking institution that will connect its customers to the rest of the world. ISF Bank and Groupe Nduom officials, including Chairman Papa Kwesi Nduom, loyal bank customers, and business partners were present at a press conference last Friday, July 27 at the banks Bronzeville location, 4619 S. King Drive, Chicago. The bank chair discussed their growth plan and how they're organizing the bank and its newly acquired name to expand as well as better serve its current customers and attract new progressive customers who expect their bank to provide professional services to them. Dating App Bumble Launches a Fund to Invest in Other Female-Founded Startups By Alex Konrad Forbes Staff

P
opular dating app Bumble may be less than four years old, but that’s not stopping it from becoming the latest buzzy startup to commit to investing in other startups coming up after it. Bumble is announcing on Wednesday that it has launched Bumble Fund (http://thebeehive.bumble.com/ bumbleblog/bumblefund), a fund focused on investing in female-founded and female-led businesses. The fund, which Bumble says it has committed more than $1 million to so far, will invest checks from $5,000 to $250,000 in companies that primarily serve women, with a focus on female founders from diverse backgrounds. “We want to give more than capital,” says Sarah Jones Simmer, Bumble’s COO, who will be leading the fund. “We are in a privileged position of having built a legacy of experience over the last four years. And so much of what we are tackling is what other founders are facing on a day-to-day basis.” Bumble’s fund has already made commitments to a handful of businesses on an ad hoc basis. Those include prenatal and postpartum healthcare company
Mahmee, beauty startup BeautyCon and swimwear startup Sofia Los Angeles, which was a winner of a pitch competition Bumble put on in the spring. Bumble also has invested in several female-focused investment funds including Female Founders Fund and Cleo Capital. Bumble declined to share the specific amounts it had invested in those companies. To find deal opportunities, Bumble turned to Sarah Kunst, Cleo Capital’s managing director, who is serving as an adviser to Bumble’s fund. Bumble also hopes to surface investments through the professional networking tool within its app, called Bumble Bizz, says Jones Simmer. Founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd in December 2014, Bumble claims to have more than 37 million users for its app, known for a mechanism in which women must message potential dating matches first in order to start a conversation. www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2018/08/15/bumblelaunches-bumble-fund/#3167e1ab411f

challenges and inequalities faced by African Americans a century after emancipation. It was also the occasion of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s now-iconic “I Have A Dream” speech. In 1963, in the wake of violent attacks on civil rights demonstrators in Birmingham, Alabama, momentum was building for a mass protest on the nation’s capital. With A. Philip Randolph planning a march for jobs, and Dr. King and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) planning one for freedom, the two groups decided to merge their efforts into one mass protest. That spring, Randolph and his chief aide, Bayard Rustin, planned a march that would call for fair treatment and equal opportunity for black Americans, as well as advocate for passage of the Civil Rights Act (then stalled in Congress). President John F. Kennedy reluctantly endorsed the March on Washington, but tasked his brother and Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy, with coordinating with the organizers to ensure all security precautions were taken.

Exercise Your Rights!
November will be here before you know it. No matter one’s political affiliation, we as Blacks, owe it to our ancestors, ourselves and future generations to participate by voting in elections of our public officials. Many in the past have fought, were jailed and lost their lives to secure our right to vote. Please register to vote. Join campaigns to help register people to vote, and continue to encourage them to get to the polls on Election Day or mail in their ballots. All voices and votes matter.
Remember to Buy Black! It's very important for those in the public and private sectors to seriously buy goods, services and products from African American-owned firms. As always, I continue to encourage A f r i c a n Americans to support (buy from) A f r i c a n American businesses. United we stand and d i v i d e d we will eventually diminish our presence and importance as stakeholders in the business community. Newsflash: we are no longer sharecroppers, but are “shareholders and stakeholders” in creating our own sustainable economic futures. Working together we will be successful.

Kobe Bryant Invested $6M in 2014, now it’s Worth $200M By James Dator

K
obe Bryant’s time in the NBA might be over, but he’s still winning. On Wednesday it was announced Coca-Cola had purchased a minority stake in the sports drink “BodyArmor”, which Bryant and other athletes invested in back in 2014. Kobe put $6 million into the company, now his stake is worth over $200 million. According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Bryant purchased 10% of the company, which markets itself as a healthier option than Gatorade in the sports drink space. BodyArmor’s co-founder, Mike Repole was responsible for selling the Glaceau brand to Coca-Cola in 2007, which made Smartwater and Vitaminwater. Other athletes said to score big on the BodyArmor sale are James Harden, Andrew Luck, and golfer
Dustin Johnson — with several other high-profile athletes linked to the brand, but not named in the story. Bryant is the big winner from the sale among athletes, however. His $194 million profit from his stake isn’t far off his total NBA earnings across his career. Bryant made a total of $328 million for 20 years playing basketball, and $194 million for waiting four years. Seems like a pretty good return. www.sbnation.com/lookit/2018/8/16/17698002/kobebryant-bodyarmor-investment

Former U.N. Chief and Nobel Peace Laureate Kofi Annan dies aged 80 By Kwasi Kpodo and Stephanie Nebehay
F
ormer U.N. Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kofi Annan died on Saturday at the age of 80, his foundation said, after decades of championing efforts to try to end protracted conflicts in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Annan, a Ghanaian national, died in hospital in Bern, Switzerland, in the early hours, his close associates
said. In Geneva, the Kofi Annan Foundation (www. kofiannanfoundation.org) announced his peaceful death after a short undisclosed illness with "immense sadness", saying he was surrounded in his last days by his second wife Nane and children Ama, Kojo and Nina.
58 August 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
After rising through the ranks of the United Nations, Annan served two terms as U.N. Secretary-General in New York from 1997-2006 and retired to live in a Swiss village in the Geneva countryside. His 10-yearold foundation promotes good governance and the transformation of African agriculture. "In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the organization into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whom Annan had chosen to head the U.N. refugee agency, said in a statement. Annan and the United Nations shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to reform the world body and give priority to human rights issues. As head of U.N. peacekeeping operations, Annan was criticized for the world body's failure to halt the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990s. As U.N. boss he was linked to peace efforts to reunite the divided island of Cyprus, submitting a reunification blueprint which was rejected in a referendum by Greek Cypriots in 2004.
'NOT PERFECT' He staunchly opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and later served as the first U.N. envoy at the start of Syria's war, but quit after world powers failed to fulfill their commitments, saying: "I lost my troops on the way to Damascus". "The U.N. can be improved, it is not perfect but if it didn't exist you would have to create it," he told the BBC's Hard Talk during an interview for his 80th birthday in April, recorded at the Geneva Graduate Institute where he had studied. "I am a stubborn optimist, I was born an optimist and
will remain an optimist," added Annan, who often joked about having learned from locals to wear earmuffs against the freezing cold during his undergraduate years at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States. Raila Odinga, Kenyan opposition leader and former prime minister, said on Citizen TV: "We didn't expect Kofi to pass that abruptly. Kofi Annan is a man of integrity; a great African, a great leader of the world."
Former U.S. presidents praised Annan. George W. Bush called him "a gentle man and a tireless leader of the United Nations", while Barack Obama described him as "a diplomat and humanitarian who embodied the mission of the United Nations like few others". "Kofi Annan devoted his life to making the world a more peaceful place through his compassion and dedication to service. He worked tirelessly to unite us and never stopped fighting for the dignity of every person," U.S. envoy to the U.N. Nikki Haley said. The Elders, a group of former leaders including Gro Harlem Brundtland and Mary Robinson, paid tribute to their inspiring chairman, noting his visits to South Africa and Zimbabwe in July. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, paid tribute to Annan as "humanity’s best example, the epitome, of human decency and grace". Zeid, who has criticized major powers and other countries during his four-year term that ends later this month, said that whenever he felt "isolated and alone politically", he would go for long walks with Annan in Geneva. "When I told him once how everyone was grumbling about me, he looked at me — like a father would look at a son — and said sternly: "You’re doing the right thing, let them grumble." Then he grinned!" https://flipboard.com/@ flipboard/-former-un-chiefand-nobel-peace-laureat/fb4fd0ae47f%2Freuters.com

Tribute - Kofi Annan
Kofi Annan famousface.us
D
ear colleagues and friends, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, We are here to pay tribute to Kofi Annan, one of the best of us, a man who embodied United Nations values and made us all proud to call ourselves his colleagues. This is a personal loss for many of us. It is difficult to imagine what a blow it must be to his wife and to his family. Our hearts go out to them. We know how much Kofi meant to the world. I would like to say a few words about what he meant to all of us who work for the United Nations.
Kofi Annan’s years in office were an exciting time. He put forward new ideas. He brought new people into the United Nations family. He spoke passionately about our mission and our role. He created a renewed sense of possibility both inside and outside our organization about what the UN could do and could be for the world’s people. Because of his long and varied career in different offices and departments, it sometimes seemed as though Kofi knew everyone personally. But even staff members who never met him felt a bond with Kofi, because he was really one of
us. As I said on Saturday, in many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. His most defining features were his humanity and solidarity with those in need. He put people at the centre of the work of the United Nations, and was able to turn compassion into action across the UN system. We are still reaping the rewards of the Millennium Summit, when he brought the world together to agree the first global targets on poverty and child mortality. His response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic united governments, Non-Governmental

Organizations and the healthcare industry and undoubtedly saved many lives. Kofi Annan faced up to the grave errors made by the United Nations in the 1990s – in its response to the Rwanda Genocide and the Srebrenica killings – by shining a light inside the UN. The reports he commissioned aimed to make sure such terrible mistakes are never repeated, and set the international
community on a new course in its response to mass atrocities. A true voice for the voiceless, he did not shy away from the most challenging issues but worked creatively to bridge differences and protect the most vulnerable. He stood his ground without antagonizing others; his humility, good humour, courtesy and charm went hand-in-hand with enormous wisdom and strength.
He will always remain vivid in my memory for as long as I live. But not essentially because of the fact he was an extraordinary statesman, a remarkable diplomat, an inspiring leader but above all because of his gentleness, of his warmth, of his friendship. He was indeed a good man and a gentleman and always at our disposal to support us, to comfort us, to be in full solidarity with us in any difficult moment that one of us, as colleagues of him would have. Perhaps we can best honour his legacy by recalling his own words, delivered at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony and I quote: “Securing real and lasting improvement in the lives of individual men and women is the measure of all we do at the United Nations.” In these times of growing political divides and intractable conflicts, we need the peacemaking spirit of Kofi Annan more than ever. T
he National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s premier civil rights organization, will partner with the leaders of the March For Our Lives (#NeverAgain) movement to register young people to vote this summer. On March 24, 2018, almost 1,000 of NAACP’s student activists lined the streets of the National Mall during the historic March For Our Lives rally to demand that their safety and lives become a national priority. That historic day marked the beginning of a partnership between the NAACP and March for Our Lives. Now, in the lead up to the midterm elections, the two organizations will once again join hands in the Road to Change Tour where the student leaders of the March For Our Lives campaign are making stops across America to get young people educated, registered, and motivated to vote. The #NeverAgain movement was established by about 20 student survivors of the February 14, 2018, Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. These students are using their summer break to travel to cities where the NRA has contributed to prominent politicians, the goal is to elect lawmakers who support gun reform. The tour will be making stops in a number of cities including Atlanta, GA, Charlottesville, VA, Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and several others. “The March for Our Lives Rally (https://twitter.com/ thecrisismag/status/977620251125997569) was an opportunity to move forward in reducing gun violence and making our communities safer,” said Tiffany Dena Loftin, National Director of the NAACP’s Youth and College Division. “This Road to Change Tour is a true opportunity to mobilize young Black people,” she added. “The NAACP is committed to letting policymakers and elected officials know in a powerful way, that young people across the country are prepared to exercise both their voice and their votes on the issue of public safety.” In Solidarity, Derrick Johnson NAACP President & CEO www.naacp.org

Barack Obama Day: Former President's Political Home State of Illinois Kicks Off Annual Holiday By Erin Kelly

F
ormer President Barack Obama started his birthday week grooving to tunes at a Beyoncé and Jay-Z concert. He's ending it by marking the first Barack Obama Day on Saturday August 4th as he turns 57. The legislature in Obama's former home state of Illinois passed a law last year to designate each Aug. 4 as a commemorative holiday to celebrate the 44th president, whose political career began in the Land of Lincoln. The law, signed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, takes effect this year. Democrats had hoped to make Obama's birthday a full legal
holiday that gives state workers and others a day off with pay, but Republicans balked at the cost. The holiday is commemorative, meaning that it honors Obama without closing government offices. Obama was a community organizer in the poor neighborhoods of Chicago before being elected as a state senator and then as a U.S. senator. He served two terms as president, from Jan. 20, 2009, until Jan. 20, 2017. The state law says that Aug. 4 is "set apart to honor the 44th President of the United States of America who began his career serving the People of Illinois in
both the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate, and dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Americans and building bridges across communities." Obama is not the first president to have a state name a holiday in his honor. Illinois, California and Wisconsin all celebrate Ronald Reagan Day each Feb. 6 in honor of the late Republican president's birthday. Katie Hill, a spokeswoman for Obama, said the former president plans to celebrate his birthday with a family dinner in Washington on Saturday night. Last year, he celebrated his birthday at a trendy Indian restaurant in Washington. In 2016, Michelle Obama (using personal funds) threw her husband one last big bash in the White House, hosting a party with celebrity guests such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Usher, Stevie Wonder, John Legend and retired Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson. www.msn.com/en-us/news/ us/barack-obama-day-formerpresidents-political-home-stateof-illinois-kicks-off-annual-holiday/ ar-BBLtHgE?ocid=spartandhp (Article includes a Slide Show featuring Obama family images.)

he University of Southern California (USC) has appointed retired aerospace executive Wanda Austin as interim president and laid out detailed plan for selecting a permanent leader, affirming the ousting of outgoing President C. L. Max Nikias. Nikias officially relinquished his duties after a meeting of USC’s board this week following his administration's handling of a campus gynecologist accused of sexually abusing patients. USC board Chairman Rick Carusi wrote in a letter to faculty and alumni that Austin, who received a doctorate in engineering from USC in 1988, was a “professional of impeccable integrity and character” and said she was the ideal person to steer the school through a difficult time. “She is deeply committed to USC, and I know that she plans to devote time in the coming weeks to listen to the views of faculty, staff, students, and our broader community on what is needed to successfully move us into our next chapter,” Caruso wrote. Austin is an American businesswoman who is internationally recognized for her work in aeronautics and systems engineering. She is co-founder of MakingSpace Inc., a systems engineering and leadership development consultant and motivational speaker. She is the former president and CEO of The Aerospace Corp., an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the application of

able News Network (CNN) hosts Don Lemon and Brian Stelter were the target of a death threat heard on-air Friday during a live C-SPAN Program about Trump and his supporters’ dislike for news media. The caller identified himself as “Don” from State College, Pennsylvania and a supporter of Trump’s criticism of the news media. “Good morning, it all started when Trump got elected,” the caller told C-SPAN host Greta Wodele Brawner, with slightly slurred speech. “Brian Stelter and Don Lemon from CNN called Trump supporters ‘all racists.’ “They don't even know us. They don’t even know these Americans out here and they are calling us racists because we voted for Trump? Come on. Give

Eddie Willis, Original Funk Brother, Dies at 82 By Gary Graff
W
illis, who was living with his wife Rose in his native Mississippi, has been in declining health for many years, the result of childhood polio that forced him to walk with a cane for most of his life. Playing in tandem with Joe Messina and others, Willis was known for his parts on Motown classics such as The Temptations' "The Way You Do the Things You Do," The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On," The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" and Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her." "He was the funkster, Eddie was," fellow Funk Brother Dennis Coffey, who did recording sessions with Willis before and during their days at Motown, tells Billboard. "He was an amazing guitar player. He had that Southern thing. He'd always come up with some funky lines. We did many sessions together and he was just an all-around nice guy. I never heard him get angry at anybody about anything. He just came in and did his job." Coffey also bought a signature Gibson Firebird guitar because it was what Willis played. After the instrument broke Willis switched to a Gibson ES-335. He also played the electric sitar on songs such as The Supremes' "No Matter What Sign You Are." Willis often told the story about coming home for a Hitsville USA session after curfew during the Detroit riots in the summer of 1967 and being stopped by a National Guard tank in front of his house. "You can only imagine, here's Eddie with his guitar and his cane, being stopped by a tank," Coffey says. "'What are you doing here?' 'I live here, man! I have to get into my
house!'" Willis learned to play guitar as a youth in Grenada, Miss., citing Chet Atkins, Albert King and Wes Montgomery as his chief influences. He moved north to Detroit after he finished school, finding gigs in the Detroit clubs and studios from where Berry Gordy Jr. eventually recruited the Funk Brothers, where the troupe and Motown's stable of artists, producers and writers churned out hits in Studio A, aka the Snake Pit. "That was like home," Willis told the New York Daily news in 2015. "We had...so much fun, so much good music, so much of everything. We all worked playing at different clubs...And then sometimes we'd go back to the Snake Pit and play some more. We just loved to play." Willis also toured with The Temptations' Eddie Kendricks and, later the Four Tops, both during and after their initial Motown tenures. He didn't move to Los Angeles with Motown in 1972 and eventually made his way back down to Gore Springs, Miss. But Willis did enjoy some of the spotlight generated by the Academy Award-winning 2002 documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown and the tours that followed, and he and the other Funk Brothers recorded with Phil Collins on his 2010 soul covers album "Going Back." The Funk Brothers also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during March of 2013. Willis is survived by his wife Rose, and their three children. www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/eddie-willisoriginal-motown-funk-brother-dies-at-82/arBBMbULz?ocid=spartandhp

Here's How to Get Your Brand New African Union E-Passport
U
nless you’re a head of state, an AU or government official, you can't—for now. It’s official—the African Union has launched its continental e-passport program Sunday as part of the opening ceremony of the 27th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Kigali, Rwanda. But unless you're Rwandan President Paul Kagame or Chadian President Idriss Eby, who are already carrying their fancylooking red and gold document, an AU official or select government personnel, it's unclear when AU passports will become available. The launch fulfills an aspiration of Agenda 2063 that envisions an “integrated” and “united” Africa, according to the AU press release announcing plans for the e-passport. “We’ve been overwhelmed by requests and enquiries of other ministers, officials, and African citizens to share in this privilege of holding an African passport,” Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the African Union Commission says, according to The New Times. “These are great steps we are taking. Our Union has great ambitions in order to ensure economic and political integration,” President Deby says. For now, there is no set timeline for when e-passports will be rolled out to the rest of Africa, but DlaminiZuma has urged African Union member states to
issue e-passports to their citizens “within their national policies, as and when they are ready,” Quartz Africa reports. It’s hoped that the e-passports is the first step that will increase mobility for Africans on the continent as well as boost trade and economic growth opportunities. However, strict visa requirements and cost prohibitive airfare are still obstacles for the African Union to realize its vision for “a strong, prosperous and integrated Africa,” though countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius, Rwanda, and Ghana have taken lead in easing their visa requirements. www.okayafrica.com/african-union-officially-launches-epassport-heads-state-au-government-officials/

Africans Take Germany to Court in New York over 'Forgotten Genocide' By GlobalPost
F
or the last six decades, Germany has atoned and compensated for its historical role in the Holocaust of World War II, paying out an estimated $70 billion to survivors since 1952. However, a group of determined activists from Namibia has been fighting for recognition of the extermination of their ancestors by the German government in what has been termed the first genocide of the 20th century. Though often overshadowed by the subsequent Nazi crimes of World War II, Germany’s colonial-era atrocities have recently been put under the spotlight. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Imperial Germany administered several parts of Africa including modernday Togo, Cameroon and Tanzania. What was then known as German South West Africa (today’s Namibia) is where some of the darkest chapters of Germany’s colonial rule unfolded. In October 1904, after people from the Herero and Nama tribes launched a rebellion against German colonial settlers in South West Africa, German General Lothar von Trotha issued a written extermination order, saying: “Within the German borders, every Herero, with or without a gun, with or without cattle, will be shot.” The edict goes on to clarify that women and children would not be spared. Tens of thousands of Herero and Nama were starved to death in concentration camps in the desert or were massacred between the years of 1904-1908. It has been estimated that 80 percent of the Herero and Nama people were wiped out in the atrocities. On July 31, representatives of the Nama and Herero people will descend on New York Southern District Court to see if their quest for retrospective justice will be successful. In pursuing their case, the Namibians have invoked the Alien Tort Statute, which allows for non-US residents to make a claim in a US court for international law violations. They call for a full, formal apology from the German government, and reparations that could stretch into the billions. Esther Muinjangue is the chairperson of the Ovaherero Genocide Foundation and, like many of her compatriots, has a deep personal connection to
the grave events. She spoke to PRI by phone from the Namibian capital, Windhoek. “The genocide was always alive in the form of stories and tales narrated through the generations but people didn’t always comprehend the nature and scale of the atrocities," she said. "The mother of my paternal grandfather was raped by German soldiers, and he is the product of that. So, I feel that a part of my family tree is missing.” The exact details of how much financial and land remuneration is being demanded remains a secret, but Muinjangue insists that the reparations must reflect how the Herero and Nama people were plunged into generations of poverty resulting from the massacre. “We are not looking for money to line our pockets, the purpose is to restore dignity," she said. "This is the land where people were killed, and we have always felt that our demands have fallen on deaf ears. Allowing communities to be part of the reparation process would be a part of healing those wounds.” One of the demands of the Namibians is that Germany negotiates directly with representatives of the Herero and Nama, rather than bilaterally with the Namibian government, which is composed of numerous tribes. One of the chief negotiators for the German government, Ruprecht Polenz, told PRI that the government of Namibia can be their only interlocutor. “When I have been in Windhoek, my impression is that between the Herero and Nama there are many different opinions on the case and so the only way for us to reach a solution is with the government," Polenz said. "They represent all Namibians and decide who sits on their behalf around the negotiating table.” Polenz contends that Germany has no legal case to answer. “There was no law in 1904-1908 that could apply. Sadly, there were genocides even before this but the 1948 Genocide Convention 1948 is forward-looking, not backward-looking, and this is what we are expecting that the New York court will say.” In 1985, a United Nations report deemed the events in German South West Africa as “the first genocide of the 20th century.” In 2015, the German government

recognized that the events constituted genocide but has ruled out direct reparations to the survivors. Andreas Eckert, the chair of African history at the Humboldt University in Berlin, told PRI that this reticence may be due to fear of setting a legal precedence. “There are big legal consequences if the Herero and Nama are successful," Eckert said. "It could trigger a wave of calls for compensation by Germany’s other former colonies, and countries affected by their wartime actions in Europe such as Greece and the Balkans. Germany is very afraid that this would open a Pandora's box, so they are being very cautious.” The German government claims that Namibia is the recipient of one of the highest amounts of their aid money. Uazuva Kaumbi, spokesperson for the Traditional Ovaherero Authority, said he sees this is as an unsatisfactory replacement for reparations. “We need to make a distinction between Germany’s colonial obligation to make good, and the genocide," Kaumbi said. "Development aid is due to the postcolonial status of Namibia. [Herero and Nama] had specific atrocities perpetrated against them. All the evidence is there. And so, the reparations need to come differently, not under the guise of development aid. We say that this should be recognized specifically as a special package to redress the genocide.” Polenz claims that the German government intends
to establish a community trust that funds education, vocational training, housing and renewable energy in the lands where the victims’ families live. The funds would be different to and administered separately from the development budget. Awareness of Germany’s colonial role remains low even in Germany, but recent high-profile campaigns by activists have gained traction. Earlier this year, local authorities in a district of northern Berlin decided to rename three streets — Nachtigalplatz, Petersallee and Lüderitzstrasse — that bear the names of German colonialists. As the Namibian's day in court nears, Kaumbi says that even if they are not victorious, the pursuit of justice will never end. “If Germany does not call it a genocide and reparations are not given, if we get fatigued and agree with the Germans to call it ‘atrocities’ and accept ‘development aid,’ this does not mean that future generations will not take it up again. eSwatini King's Visit Shows Commitment to Taiwan By Elaine Hou and Frances Huang
T
hamie Dlamini, eSwatini ambassador to Taiwan, said the visit next week by King Mswati III of the African kingdom also known as Swaziland, shows his country's commitment to Taiwan. Dlamini's remarks deflated speculation that eSwatini, which has had formal ties with Taiwan for 50 years, will cut official relations with Taipei and recognize China instead, after Burkina Faso severed ties with Taiwan on May 24. "We will stick with Taiwan. Our diplomatic ties are at a very strong level. We are very happy with that," Dlamini said in a Friday interview with CNA. "Next week, we are all excited by the visit by His Majesty, who is going to cement the very good relations between the two countries." King Mswati III is scheduled to visit Taiwan from June 6-12. The ambassador said the state visit has been planned for some time and is not arranged in a hasty manner. Dlamini said Taiwan is a second home for the king and the visit will be able to deliver a strong signal that both sides enjoy sound and solid ties. "We want to once again extend to our deepest gratitude to Taiwan and to the people of Taiwan who have always worked hard in terms of supporting

economic and social development initiatives in eSwatini," Dalmini said. "We are very much happy with the current status of our diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan)," he said. Dalmini said eSwatini respects China as a country and respects the way Beijing implements its foreign policy, but eSwatini is a sovereign state so his country is able to conduct its own foreign policy. Speaking on the upcoming state visit by the king, Dalmini said the king and President Tsai will sign a bilateral economic cooperation agreement, which is expected to grant eSwatini's products preferential tariffs when they are sold to Taiwan. "We are not always coming to Taiwan to beg, but we are coming to seek how best we can cooperate and support each other. Also, in our attempt, we are always ready to support Taiwan in playing an active role," the ambassador said. During the visit, the king will attend his son's college graduation on June 9. After graduating, the young man is expected to stay in Taiwan to pursue higher education in a graduate school, Dlamini said. Dlamini said he has faith that ties between Taiwan and eSwatini will continue to grow and it is possible that more royal members will come to Taiwan to study. http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aipl/201806020007.aspx

Ethiopian Airlines, Zambia to Relaunch National Airline at Cost of $30 million By Reuters Staff
E
thiopian Airlines has signed a shareholding agreement with Zambia’s main develoment agency to relaunch the southern African country’s flag carrier at an initial cost of $30 million. The Ethiopian state-owned carrier has outpaced regional competitors Kenya Airways and South African Airways to become Africa’s largest airline by revenue and profit, and has been buying shares in other African airlines to gain a competitive advantage over rivals such as those in the Gulf.
Under the plan, Zambia Airways, being revived more than two decades after it was shut down, would operate 12 planes by 2028, Ethiopian Airlines said in a joint statement with Zambia’s stateowned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Ethiopian Airlines will own 45% of the revamped Zambian airline, and Zambia 55%, the statement said. “The initial investment as we start up the national carrier will be $30 million. Obviously, as we operate the airline, we will facilitate the financing necessary to support its growth,” it said. Ethiopian Airlines said in January it had signed an agreement with the Zambian government to relaunch Zambia Airways. Zambia Airways will launch local and regional routes this year while intercontinental routes, including Europe, the Middle East and Asia, will
be added in the near future, it said. State-owned Zambia Airways went into liquidation in 1994. The privately-owned Zambian Airways then emerged as the country’s main carrier with flights to other major hubs in southern Africa, but it suspended operations in 2009. Ethiopian Airlines operates and manages Malawi Airlines through a deal signed in 2013. In May, the airline said it was in talks with Chad, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea to set up carriers through joint ventures. It also aimed to create a new airline in Mozambique that it will fully own. Ethiopia said in June it would open Ethiopian Airlines and its staterun telecoms monopoly to private domestic and foreign investment in a major policy shift that will loosen the state’s grip on the economy. https://af.reuters.com/article/ investingNews/idAFKCN1L50QV-OZABS

long the roadside, hundreds of spectators squint against the sun awaiting their heroes. To pass the time, they buy peanuts and water from traveling vendors while talking about cattle or sugarcane. Agriculture is an issue in Rwanda. Suddenly, the crouched figure of Samuel Mugisha comes into view. Sweating, teeth clenched, the Rwandan wins the second stage. The twenty-year-old is riding this year's 10th edition of the eightstage Tour du Rwanda (August 5-12), which attracted 16 teams from 11 nations. Three of the teams were from Rwanda. Mugisha is one of the riders the locals pin their hopes on. “On Team Rwanda we are cyclists only,”
explains the withy athlete. “There are no more Tutsis, Hutus or Twa." Mugisha pronounces these simple words with a penetrating look that leaves no doubt about his clear statement. For many Rwandans it is as if the genocide of 1994 happened just yesterday… but the 2018 Tour du Rwanda, stage four

One Africa:
J
Tell the US Government that North Africa is Africa Too!
oin with and support the United Africa Organization’s campaign to petition the U.S. Department of State to include the whole African continent under its Bureau of African Affairs.
Why? The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, led by Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson, currently excludes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara from its agenda. Instead, the aforementioned countries are grouped with the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, together with Iran, Iraq, Israel and others. This artificial distinction between North Africa and the rest of Africa
negatively impacts US foreign policy relations throughout the entire continent of Africa. We unequivocally reject the argument that North African countries are outside the scope of African affairs. North Africa is geographically and historically part of the African continent, and all fifty-three (53) independent African states, including North African countries, are represented in the African Union (AU). It would be far more productive for the State Department to engage with the entire continent of Africa, including North Africa, under its Bureau of African Affairs. We are one Africa, from the Cape to Cairo, indivisible and bound together! Therefore, no square inch of African
land should be excluded from African affairs.
Sign The Petition!!! Go to www.change.org/petitions/ one-africa-tell-us-state-departmentthat-north-africa-is-part-of-africa and sign the online petition to support this important proposition. Next tell everyone you know to sign.

Illuminating text paired with irresistible illustrations bring to life both iconic and lesser-known female figures of Black history such as abolitionist Sojourner Truth, pilot Bessie Coleman, chemist Alice Ball, politician Shirley Chisholm, mathematician Katherine Johnson, poet Maya Angelou, and filmmaker Julie Dash. Among these biographies, readers will find heroes, role models, and everyday women who did extraordinary things - bold women whose actions and beliefs contributed to making the world better for generations of girls and women to come. Whether they were putting pen to paper, soaring through the air or speaking up for the rights of others, the women profiled in these pages were all taking a stand against a world that didn't always accept them. Aretha Franklin: From These Roots
H
by Aretha Franklin, David Ritz (collaborator)
er soulful, soaring voice has earned her mythic status. Now, in her own moving words, the woman behind the myth is revealed. The result is a captivating self-portrait of one of this century's most fascinating artists, an Aretha Franklin as real as the songs she sings. For the first time anywhere, Aretha tells her story--the glorious triumphs as well as the heartbreaking pain. With refreshing candor, Aretha tells it like it is, the way she sees it, the way she lived it. A child prodigy of the golden age of gospel, the daughter of a world-famous preacher, Aretha was the anointed successor to Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward. But her father had a broader vision and helped Aretha enter the field of pop and jazz. By age eighteen, she was under contract to Columbia Records. Six years later, after only a few minor hits, she switched to Atlantic, where she shook the musical world to its roots. Her song "Respect" became the anthem of an epoch, a touchstone for African Americans, for women, for all people struggling to be free. Aretha became the Queen of Soul, the genre's finest interpreter since Ray Charles. In Aretha: From These Roots, the singer gets upclose and personal. In rich detail, she paints a vivid picture of a Detroit long gone: the storefront churches, the basement parties, the explosive R&B shows. She documents her life as a single teenage mother, working to balance home life with career, coping
with two challenging marriages and, later, romantic relationships that were the source of both tremendous joy and unforeseen heartache. Along the way, we meet the characters who lit up her life: her charismatic father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin, "the man with the million-dollar voice"; Sam Cooke, the man of her dreams; her singing sisters, Erma and Carolyn, and her manager-brother, Cecil; her famous colleagues--Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Luther Vandross, and Luciano Pavarotti--as well as some famous rivals. Aretha emerges as a triumphant woman of rare wit, willing to share with us her passion for great music, great food, and great love affairs. Her book does more than illuminate some of the most exciting songs ever sung; it lets you into the heart and mind of the mesmerizing woman who sang them. www.amazon.com/Aretha-These-Roots-Franklin/ dp/0375500332/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid= 1535075175&sr=1-2&keywords=aretha+franklin+auto biography
Interventions: A Life in War and Peace by Kofi Annan (Author), Nader Mousavizadeh (Contributor) "[A] resolute, detailed, and unflinching review of [Annan’s] most difficult hours…No one ever came closer to being the voice of “we the peoples” and no one paid a higher price for it. New threats make no distinction between races, nations, or regions.” Yet within only a few years the world was more divided than ever—polarized by the American invasion of Iraq, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the escalating

Books to Consider civil wars in Africa, and the rising influence of China. Interventions: A Life in War and Peace is the story of Annan’s remarkable time at the center of the world stage. After forty years of service at the United Nations, Annan shares here his unique experiences during the terrorist attacks of September 11; the American invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan; the war between Israel, Hizbollah, and Lebanon; the brutal conflicts of Somalia, Rwanda, and Bosnia; and the geopolitical transformations following the end of the Cold War. With eloquence and unprecedented candor, Interventions finally reveals Annan’s unique role and unparalleled perspective on decades of global politics. The first sub-Saharan African to hold the position of Secretary-General, Annan has led an extraordinary life in his own right. His idealism and personal politics were forged in the Ghanaian independence movement of his
adolescence, when all of Africa seemed to be rising as one to demand self-determination. Schooled in Africa, Europe, and the United States, Annan ultimately joined the United Nations in Geneva at the lowest professional level in the still young organization. Annan rose rapidly through the ranks and was by the end of the Cold War prominently placed in the dramatically changing department of peacekeeping operations. His stories of Presidents Clinton and Bush, dictators like Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe, and public figures of all stripes contrast powerfully with Annan’s descriptions of the courage and decency of ordinary people everywhere struggling for a new and better world. Showing the successes of the United Nations, Annan also reveals the organization’s missed opportunities and ongoing challenges—inaction in the Rwanda genocide, continuing violence between Israelis and Palestinians, and the endurance of endemic poverty. Yet Annan’s great strength in this book is his ability to embed these tragedies within the context of global politics, demonstrating how, time and again, the nations of the world have retreated from the UN’s founding purpose. From the pinnacle of global politics, Annan made it his purpose to put the individual at the center of every mission for peace and prosperity. A personal biography of global statecraft, Annan’s Interventions is as much a memoir as a guide to world order—past, present, and future. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079RB155J/ref=dpkindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
