lection Day was November 6th and, importantly, we hope that you voted. All voices mattered, especially yours. It is always important that we exercise our hard fought for the "Right To Vote" and let our voices be heard.
As a result of the recent election, the Democratic Party will be in control of the Congressional House of Representatives. California Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D) who is the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee will be installed as the Chair. Waters has Pubisher/Editor-In-Chief never shied away from challenges since her historic first election victory in 1976 to the California State Assembly through to her election to Congress in 1990. Maxine has served her constituents, and the nation, tirelessly and consistently. Our article on page 14 documents her historic ascension up to this prominent Congressional position. Many in the banking and financial industries are bracing themselves for Waters’ impending oversight over the industry that drives our nation’s economy. We will all be witnesses to her high IQ.

On November 8th, the Black Business Association is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Veteran's Day with a procurement and business conference at the Bob Hope Patriotic Hall in Los Angeles. The event features a special panel on non-traditional / alternative lenders that offer other pathways to accessing the capital needed to grow businesses. The nation and the BBA recognize and honor the many selfless sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces protecting our freedoms and interests at home and abroad. As a Vietnamera Veteran, I cannot re-emphasize enough the importance of supporting our veterans. Veteran-owned business is a fast-growing category of entrepreneurship. While you are counting your blessings this Thanksgiving, don’t forget about the less fortunate people all around the world. Remember them in your thoughts, prayers and through donations to service organizations dedicated to assisting them.

Stacey Abrams Launches Fair Fight Georgia By Kerensa Cadenas
A
voters were black. 8% of Georgia’s registered voters were cut from voter rolls in late July 2017. During the election, counties threw out thousands of absentee ballots due to a variety of reasons, including signatures that didn’t match up with voter registration
fter a tumultuous race, Democrat Stacey Abrams has ended her gubernatorial run in Georgia, saying that she recognizes she cannot beat Republican Brian Kemp. Their state’s battle for governor attracted national attention for several reasons. Had she won, Abrams would have been the first black woman elected governor in the U.S. But the election was marred by charges of voter suppression allegedly instigated by her opponent, Georgia’s Secretary of State—who did not recuse himself from overseeing a race in which he himself was running. The day before the state’s voter registration deadline, 53,000 registrations were put on hold because the names on record didn’t match their applications. 70% of those
files. “Under the watch of the now former secretary of state, democracy failed Georgia,” Abrams charged in her stirring announcement, which she insisted was not, technically, a concession. “Let’s be clear—this is not a speech of concession, because concession means to acknowledge an action is right, true or proper,” she said. “As a woman of conscience and faith, I cannot concede that. But, my assessment is the law currently allows no further viable remedy. Now, I can certainly bring a new case to keep this one contest alive, but I don’t want to hold public office if I need to scheme my way into the post. Because the title of governor isn’t nearly as important as our shared title—voters. And that is why we fight on.”
“Make no mistake, the former secretary of state was deliberate and intentional in his actions,” Abrams continued. “I know that eight years of systemic disenfranchisement, disinvestment and incompetence had its desired affect on the electoral process in Georgia.” Her speech came at the end of her campaign’s effort to find enough votes to force a runoff election on December 4th. While her fight for governor may be over, Abrams said that she is just beginning her battle against the erosion of voting rights in Georgia. She’ll be launching a new voting rights group, Fair Fight Georgia; her campaign also launched a commercial asking voters to tell their stories about trouble at the polls. Abrams is also planning to submit a major federal lawsuit against Georgia for the “gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections from unconstitutional actions,” she said. Kemp, meanwhile, issued his own statement about Abrams saying, “Moments ago, Stacey Abrams conceded the race and officially ended her campaign for governor. I appreciate her passion, hard work, and commitment to public service.” www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/11/ stacey-abrams-georgia-brian-kempgovernor-concedes

Mia Love Slams Trump in Concession Speech By CNN'S Paul LeBlanc Contributed to this report
R
epublican Rep. Mia Love sharply criticized President Donald Trump during a concession speech on Monday, saying Trump's vision of the world is "no real relationships, just convenient transactions." Love conceded to Democrat Ben McAdams in their Utah congressional race, giving Democrats another pickup in the House of Representatives and bringing the party's net seat gain to 38. Love made the comments about Trump in response to the President's post-Election Day news conference, in which he declared that Love had lost the race despite votes still being counted and attacked the congresswoman for not embracing him as a campaigner. "Mia Love gave me no love and she lost," Trump said. "Too bad. Sorry about that, Mia." "The President's behavior towards me made me wonder: What did he have to gain by saying such a thing about a fellow Republican," Love
said during her speech in Salt Lake City. "It was not really about asking him to do more, was it? Or was it something else? Well Mr. President, we'll have to chat about that." She continued, "However, this gave me a clear vision of his world as it is. No real relationships, just convenient transactions. That is an insufficient way to implement sincere service and policy." Love then turned her attention to the larger problem Republicans in Washington have with minority voters. "This election experience and these comments shines a spotlight on the problems Washington politicians have with minorities and black Americans -- it's transactional, it's not personal," she said. She added, "You see, we feel like politicians claim they know what's best for us from a safe distance, yet they're never willing to take us home. Because Republicans never take minority communities into their home and citizens into their homes and into their hearts, they stay with Democrats and bureaucrats in Washington because they do take
them home -- or at least make them feel like they have a home." She started her speech acknowledging that she "reached out to Ben over the weekend and congratulated him for winning the election and I wish him well." But Love also criticized McAdams, whom she said was responsible for running a harmful campaign, calling him a "wolf in sheep's clothing." "Sadly, their character assassination tactics have so stained our state, that now citizens should expect that this is how elections will be won," she said. "Victory is theirs. I believe that we've elected a wolf in sheep's clothing. But the question remains: at what cost to the people of Utah? There is a cost, and we will pay it." Love said that now that she is no longer in Congress, her supporters should expect to see a more candid version of her. "Starting in January, my role will change and we still have a lot of work to do," she said, adding that "we will not yield the moral high ground whatever the cost." "Good news is, I'm not going away. But now, I am unleashed, I am untethered and I am unshackled, and I can say exactly what's on my mind." www.krdo.com/news/politics/mia-love-slamstrump-in-concession-speech/892666057

Government - Prison Reform
Is The “First Step Act” Real Reform? by Justin George
W
hat is the First Step Act? The bill, sponsored by Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, and Doug Collins, a Georgia Republican, seeks to add educational and vocational training and mental health treatment in federal prison. It earmarks $50 million a year over five years to expand these in-prison opportunities. It also expands the number of days in a halfway house or home confinement that inmates
Senator Corey Booker everything-pr.com
can earn for good behavior and self-improvement. It would expand the use of risk assessment tools— algorithms that try to predict future behavior. It bans the shackling of pregnant women; calls for placing prisoners in facilities that are within 500 driving miles of their families; and helps them get identification cards upon release.
and talk about how I want to make it perfect. I wish that we passed perfect legislation up here all the time, but I don’t think there has ever been one, and holding a no vote on this bill is wrong. In fact, why would you vote no on a bill that would unshackle women who are having babies in prison? Why would you vote no on early release for elderly prisoners?” Opponents say many of the mandates in the First Step Act can be accomplished without legislation. The Bureau of Prisons, for instance, has long been criticized for not releasing more elderly or infirmed prisoners under a process known as “compassionate release.” The bureau could also ensure that prisoners are placed closer to their families. They worry the bill, by relying on algorithms that may have a racial bias, could widen racial disparities in prison. But most of all, critics fear Congress will pass the more limited bill, congratulate itself and not return to the subject for years. The bill divides a strong coalition for comprehensive reform.
Why is there a debate? Opponents, mostly on the left, say any criminal justice reform bill should also reduce mandatory minimum sentences or give judges more discretion to make the punishment fit the crime. A bipartisan Senate bill, the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, is also making its way through Congress. It includes “back end” reform— services for prisoners—and “front end” reform—reducing sentence time. Its supporters believe that the House bill is stealing support and momentum from the more comprehensive bill. What’s the debate about? Proponents of the House bill say the comprehensive Senate bill being touted failed in 2016 when it had stronger bipartisan support and fewer obstacles during the Obama administration. Jeffries said an imperfect bill was a start. “You can’t simply wave one legislative magic wand and make it (mass incarceration) Former Attorney General Eric Holder usatoday.com all go away,” Jeffries said last week during What happens next? In the a House Judiciary Committee hearing. “It’s going to require a Senate, things get really interesting. sustained effort, sustained intensity, Judiciary Committee Chairman sustained commitment and a Charles Grassley, a Republican, meaningful first step.” Added Collins has become a stubborn and vocal in the same hearing: “We can argue defender of sentencing reform.

Speaking to an audience of faith-based advocates Tuesday, Grassley said he had come to realize that mandatory minimums come at a huge cost. Grassley, the chief sponsor of the sentencing reform bill, said the House bill was unacceptable. “For that deal to pass the Senate, it must include sentencing reform,” he said. “This is necessary for practical as well as political reasons. First of all, it’s the right thing to do. Judges should have discretion to make sure that the punishment fits the crime and that criminal defendants are incentivized to cooperate with police investigations. Adjusting mandatory minimums for lowerlevel, nonviolent criminal offenders also saves a significant amount of money which can be used to target the worst offenders such as drug kingpins and violent criminals. Second, states that have seen the biggest drops in crime from criminal justice reform didn’t just do prison reform. They did sentencing reform too.” Who’s lining up behind the First Step Act? More than 100 former federal prosecutors are endorsing the bill. Conservative groups such as the American Conservative Union Foundation believe the bill is a no-brainer. “So disappointed to see a handful of Democrats oppose the First Step Act because Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren don’t want to give Republicans a win,”
David Safavian, deputy director of the group’s center for criminal justice reform, tweeted before the House vote. “Putting politics over the lives of those incarcerated— and their families—is just a horrible thing to do.” Prison Fellowship, a faith-based advocacy group popular with evangelicals, also supports the bill. As does Families Against Mandatory Minimums. FAMM President Kevin Ring said he understands those holding out for sentencing reform, but he said it’s been years since any meaningful bills have passed to help prisoners. He said he believes Jeffries and Collins will not stop pushing for sentencing reform if the First Step Act passes. Who’s opposing it? Liberal Democrats such as Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Richard Durbin and Reps. John Lewis and Sheila Jackson Lee are leading the charge against the bill. More than 100 civil rights organizations are also opposing it, including the ACLU. “The FIRST STEP Act supporters say ‘something is better than nothing,’” tweeted Jesselyn B. McCurdy, deputy director for the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office. “If criminal justice reform no longer addresses the very real problems in the federal system ... we are in trouble.” Former Attorney General Eric Holder said reformers should keep their eyes on the bigger prize. “Momentum for sentencing
reform is being derailed by an effort that is misguided, ideological and outdated,” he tweeted. “The narrow ‘prison reform’ bill won’t deliver the transformative change we need. The only way to achieve that is by passing bipartisan, comprehensive sentencing reform.” What does the White House support? President Donald Trump said if the prison reform bill reaches his desk, he will sign it. It’s less clear how he would react if Congress sent him a more ambitious bill, including sentencing changes. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it clear he does not support reducing sentences, and he worked hard to kill the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act in 2016 when he was a senator. Jared Kushner, the president’s advisor and son-inlaw, has been a quiet proponent of giving judges more discretion when sentencing, and in private meetings he has voiced support for a comprehensive bill. However, it seems as if a prison reform-only bill gives Trump what he wants: To look tough to his base by not budging on sentences while also showing evangelicals he believes in “second chances.” www.themarshallproject. org/2018/05/22/is-the-first-step-actreal-reform www.congress.gov/bill/115thcongress/house-bill/5682/text www.congress.gov/bill/115thcongress/senate-bill/1917/text www.politico.com/f/?id=000001636f9d-dbc0-a56b-efdd053a0001 www.washingtonpost. com/opinions/dont-letthe-trump-administrationderail-criminal-justicereform/2018/05/21/7b3374d85d17-11e8-b2b808a538d9dbd6_story. html?utm_term=.4b305139dca8

Government statewide office in this state, and the vast majority didn’t again last night. Old racism dies hard. But the less obvious answer is that Mississippi is different now in significant ways — and that won’t be as obvious to the wellmeaning bandwagoners from beyond the state line. racial politicking electrified many Mississippians to work harder to get the vote out, as well as have uncomfortable and needed conversations about race. And Hyde-Smith’s words — and lack of educated and empathetic followthrough in response to criticism — inspired the Jackson Free Press to look into her own education, discovering that she was likely brainwashed in the language of the "Confederacy’s lost cause" in one of the early segregation academies in the state. It was telling that she later sent her daughter to one of those “culturally-sheltered" institutions — as so many white people do — claiming that it’s for a “better” education. But these schools aren’t just any private school; they were set up intentionally to limit white kids’ exposure to African Americans and this state’s real history of racial oppression. Because of this race, far more people in the state and nation now know what a “segregation academy” was and how they've evolved and still exist — and Mississippians and others now understand that early "school choice" vouchers were used to help white families transfer their children and their tax money to such "seg" academies. Plus, Hyde-Smith's and our Gov. Phil Bryant's refusal to talk about their education in such schools prompted others here to share their stories of attending those schools as children and to vow not to put their kids through the same thing. White people were not speaking out as openly against racism here 16 or even 10 years ago. When Majority Leader Trent Lott made his horribly racist statements in 1980 and then again in 2002 that the country would have been better off had Sen. Strom Thurmond been elected president 1948 as a Dixiecrat, there was a national
media storm, but many white people in the state did not care. The same could be said for former Gov. Haley Barbour when in 2011 he shrugged at the racist Citizens Council’s role in segregation in his hometown. There are other, local examples, too. Mississippi Senate Tourism Chairwoman Lydia Chassaniol, a Republican, gave the keynote speech to the Council of Conservative Citizens’ (the group that inspired Dylann Roof to massacre black worshipers in South Carolina) national convention in Jackson in 2009. It drew essentially no media attention — beyond my newspaper — in Mississippi and little notice nationally. Or when State Sen. Karl Oliver said just last year that people taking down Confederate statues should be lynched, there was media coverage, but he still holds his seat in the Mississippi Legislature. Yet, during the last month of this campaign, we even saw a surge of white Mississippians, including lifelong conservatives, willing to outright challenge the racial status quo here. It’s obviously not enough — yet — but Espy's loss won't be the end of that reckoning, either. White Mississippians as a whole still do not punish candidates who engage in racist rhetoric, in no small
part due to the type of miseducation on race that many of them clearly grew up amid. It’s a brainwashing that is hard to reverse, but the battle to change it is necessary for this state. Throughout Mississippi’s history, when residents talk openly about racism here and challenge racist politics, we’re told to leave because we don’t fit in — and many smart natives do just that, making it easier for Republicans to keep winning elections. Exit polls for the general election on November 6 showed the usual for our state — people under age 45 supported Democrat Mike Espy while people over 45 voted Republican. But this time, the volume of dissent to the status quo in Mississippi is louder than it’s ever been — including among many white natives — and that is going to make Republicans’ use of racist political strategies much harder in upcoming elections. Espy may have lost the race but, like successful battles first to end slavery and then Jim Crow in this region, his ideas may still win the war. www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/ cindy-hyde-smith-wins-runoffin-mississippi-keeps-seat/arBBQ99sx?OCID=ansmsnnews11

Health Equity and Accountability Act By Big Island Now
S
en. Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai‘i) introduced S. 3660, the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA) of 2018. HEAA lays out a comprehensive roadmap to address health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ community, rural populations and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. “Minority communities and other traditionally underserved populations have faced healthcare disparities for decades, and we have a long way to go to ensure that these communities have equal, affordable access to culturally competent healthcare services,” Sen. Hirono said. “HEAA lays out a bold blueprint to deliver on the idea that quality, affordable healthcare is truly a right for all and not a privilege reserved for some. I thank my Senate and House colleagues, and the hundreds of advocacy groups who support HEAA for their work to ensure that all Americans can access and afford the care that may save their lives.” The Health Equity and Accountability Act is cosponsored by Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), Ben Cardin (D-Maryland), Kamala Harris (D-California), Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York), and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). Rep. Barbara Lee (D-California)
introduced the bill’s House counterpart, H.R.5942, in May 2018 and HEAA is supported by over 300 advocacy groups. “We commend Sen. Hirono, Congresswoman Lee and the Congressional Tri-Caucus for their leadership and commitment to putting us on a path toward health equity,” Kathy Ko Chin, president and CEO of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum said. “Now more than ever, HEAA is needed to both build upon the historic reforms achieved by the Affordable Care Act and to look beyond them to truly create a more equitable health system for our nation.” HEAA has been introduced in every Congress since 2007. The bill’s many policies are organized under ten titles aimed at effectively addressing health disparities and barriers to access that disproportionately affect minority communities:
Title I: Data Collection and Reporting Currently, standard methods for collecting data do not fully capture the experiences of communities of color and other vulnerable populations. Without accurate data, healthcare policy decisions unintentionally exclude several communities, including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, sexual and gender minorities, and rural communities. To address this fundamental problem, Title I requires data to be reported in a way that can be used to address
health disparities and participation in health programs, housing, and nutrition. More specifically, Title I also includes a provision to develop and implement a national strategy for identifying and evaluating the health status and needs of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
Title II: Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Health and Healthcare Access to quality healthcare and providers are essential to addressing health disparities. Communities of color, people with limited English proficiency, and other minorities often experience challenges seeking care with providers that do not share their backgrounds, do not speak their language, or may lack appropriate cultural sensitivity to the experiences of minority patients. Title II outlines concrete steps to ensure patient access to high quality care by enhancing language access services and providing better information and training on cultural competency to providers. More culturally and linguistically appropriate care will empower patients to access high quality care.
Title III: Health Workforce Diversity Title III focuses on improving the diversity of the health workforce through grants for training underrepresented minorities and
12 November 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
providers that treat under-served populations. Title III establishes several scholarship and fellowship programs, including the Patsy Mink Health and Gender Research Fellowship program, which awards research fellowships to post-baccalaureate students to conduct research examining gender and health disparities. This title also provides additional supports for workforce development through loan forgiveness and other training programs.
Title IV: Improving Healthcare Access and Quality Despite progress made through the Affordable Care Act, healthcare access for minority communities remains a problem in the U.S. Immigrant communities are particularly disadvantaged because under current law they are excluded from public healthcare and other social programs. Title IV will expand healthcare access by allowing immigrant communities to qualify for the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits and costsharing reduction payments, as well as allowing lawfully present individuals to qualify for Medicare. It also provides support for the improvement of rural hospitals and health services, for example, through the expansion of telehealth services in Medicare including across state lines. HEAA would also incorporate health equity into quality payment programs in Medicare and Medicaid to ensure that progress being made to
improve health quality improves care for everyone. Finally, Title IV would restore access to Medicaid for Compact of Free Association (COFA) communities.
Title V: Improving Health Outcomes for Women, Children and Families Title V addresses barriers that disproportionately prevent access to healthcare and nutrition services for minority women, children, and other marginalized communities. This title includes several provisions to improve maternal mortality and maternity health outcomes and increase diversity in the maternity healthcare profession. Title V also calls for the development of medically accurate, age appropriate sex education, as well as emergency contraception education and information programs.
Title VI: Mental Health Mental health services and treatments are still heavily stigmatized in communities of color. To help expand the understanding and participation of mental health services, Title VI seeks to address social barriers by investing in proper provider training, research on mental health disparities, promotion of mental health among minority populations, and by providing mental health services in schools.
Title VII: Addressing High Impact Minority Diseases Racial and ethnic minority populations experience higher rates of many chronic illnesses, including cancer, viral hepatitis and liver cancer, bone marrow disease, cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, lung disease, osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases, sleep disorders, and
sickle cell. Title VII outlines steps to ensure programs take into consideration patients of color and diseases that disproportionately affect minorities, such as sickle cell and Hepatitis B. Additionally, this title calls for an increase in federal resources for research, prevention, and treatment of those diseases.
Title VIII: Health Information Technology As health information (IT) technology becomes more ingrained in our healthcare system, it provides an opportunity to reduce health disparities through improved data collection. Title VIII extends funding for health IT in communities with racial and ethnic minorities so that health IT helps to identify and ultimately eliminate health disparities.
Title IX: Accountability and Evaluation This title focuses on oversight of federal agencies and programs to ensure the progress and accuracy of work to address health disparities continues and that civil rights in healthcare are protected.
Title X: Addressing Social Determinants and Improving Environmental Justice The environment, housing, school, and nutrition all have a significant influence on a person’s health. Efforts to address health disparities must also address these “social determinants of health.” Title X establishes grants and provides coordination with non-health agencies including the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Agency to study and address these social determinants of health. http://bigislandnow.com/2018/11/28/healthequity-and-accountability-act-introduced/

Maxine Waters: 42 Years & Still Going Strong By PY Thomas
M
axine Waters was first elected to California State Assembly on November 2, 1976 in a historical grassroots campaign in which she was a come-from-behind underdog in the contest. In an apparent attempt to preordain the outcome, the thencurrent assemblyman waited until the last day of filing for the election to declare that he would not run. Instead, the Assemblyman’s deputy filed for the seat, with his boss’s blessing. The last-minute twist was reported by the Los Angeles Times the following day. Waters, then Chief Deputy for Los Angeles City Councilman David Cunningham, Jr. reached out to the California State Secretary to question what had transpired. The California State Secretary issued a statement the following week, “Although no law was broken the intent was questionable, therefore the deadline to run for the office of the 48th District will be extended two weeks.” Although the Deputy running for the Assembly seat had the support of the most powerful African American elected official in Sacramento, as well as the Governor of California,
the Speaker of the Assembly, and several other elected officials, labor unions, and countless others, Waters mounted an aggressive campaign. Reflecting on Quincy Jones’ One-of-aKind Career Ahead of Imprint Ceremony
Y
Quincy through Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” which has interlinked their names for 35 years. Their affiliation started five years prior with “The Wiz” in 1978, continuing with “Off the Wall,” a product of Jones bringing in a musical team to usher in Jackson’s adult era at the grand old age of 21. While that would be a career highlight for most, it’s but a chapter for Jones. Nearly four decades earlier, Jones had latched onto music as a way out of the poverty and crime he saw in his native Chicago. In Seattle, where his father had moved the family, he blossomed as a trumpeter, his skills getting him into Berklee and then the bands of Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie. With Hamp he displayed a knack for arranging and soon he was getting calls to handle charts for Duke Ellington, Count Basie, his childhood friend Ray Charles and others. He started recording under his own name in 1957 but, despite steady touring and recording, he never
ou’ve got to believe Quincy Jones was willing to die for his music. His biggest health scare came in in 1974 when he suffered a brain aneurysm. The blame fell to his workload — scoring a half-dozen films a year, recording a solo album each year, and producing and arranging for others. He required two surgeries to get back to normal, yet friends and family were so convinced his death was imminent, they organized a memorial with Marvin Gaye and Sarah Vaughan among the entertainers. Jones wound up being healthy enough to attend. That’s the first sign he was unbreakable. In 2015, he went into a diabetic coma after suffering a stroke and again quality of life was an issue. Since recovering, he’s been producing events and TV shows, guiding the careers of 10 young musicians, most of them focused on jazz, and helping his daughter, Rashida, promote her doc on his life, Netflix’s “Quincy.” On Nov. 27 he will leave a more permanent mark on Hollywood when his hands and feet are encased in cement in the forecourt of the TCL Chinese Theatre. Not bad for a trumpet player who had his start in the big band era. He has been a one-of-a-kind musician for 70 years. His excellence has been rewarded with 27 Grammy Awards, including an album of the year trophy for “Back on the Block,” a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Oscar, an Emmy for “Roots” and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And he impressed people who aren’t impressed easily: Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Dr. Dre, Norman Lear. The pop music audience that doesn’t (l-r) Snopp Dogg, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, scan liner notes became wholly aware of Rashida Jones, and Usher eastlothiancourier.com 20 November 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
had any money. This is where Q’s genius kicked in: He saw the difference between music and the music biz and secured a label job at Mercury Records where, in 1961, he became the first African-American VP of a record company. He’d go on to other firsts in the worlds of film scoring and conducting. You won’t find another musician with as diverse a collection of activities as Jones from the early 1960s up to the attack of that brain aneurysm. After releasing about a dozen straight-ahead jazz albums, in 1962 he jumped on the bossa nova craze with his goodtime “Big Band Bossa Nova,” which includes his “Soul Bossa Nova,” better known years later as Austin Powers’ theme. That same year, he rethought the role of big band and created “Quintessence,” one of the first albums to make modern jazz orchestra vital and relevant. Simultaneously, he went into the office and signed, produced and guided the career of Lesley Gore, who started a string of Top 40 hits in 1963 with “It’s My Party.” He broke into film scoring in 1964 with Sidney Lumet’s “The Pawnbroker” when Hollywood had yet to embrace black film composers. Three of his most impressive scores — for “In the Heat of the Night,”
“In Cold Blood” and the TV series “Ironsides”— came out in 1967, a year in which he wrote music for six films and two TV series. Also in 1964, Sinatra hired Jones to arrange the music for one of the best albums of his career, “It Might as Well Be Swing” with Count Basie. Two years later he had Jones arrange and conduct the Basie band during a January-February engagement at the Sands in Las Vegas. The resulting album is Sinatra’s finest live record. He hit a commercial peak with “Body Heat” and “Mellow Madness,” which featured his discovery, the Brothers Johnson. Seemingly never stopping, unless he’s in a hospital bed, Jones has paired his music with global travels as a goodwill ambassador, promoting the music of old friends such as Clark Terry, whose name might not make it into the history books, along with vibrant new talent such as Alfredo Rodriguez, Jacob Collier and Richard Bona. Back in the day, he presciently named his company Qwest. Unfazed by success, he’s still on a quest today. https://variety.com/2018/music/awards/quincy-jones-toimprint-hands-and-feet-1203037067/

Ten-year-old Designer Kheris Rogers on why she’s Flexin’ in My Complexion By Gianina Thompson
T
he world took notice of 10-yearold Kheris Rogers after 15-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys posted a picture of her on Instagram with the caption: “I love this beautiful girl @ kherispoppin and I love her mission! Keep shining.” Kheris’ mission is to empower confidence with her clothing line Flexin’ In My Complexion, which she was inspired to create after being teased for her dark complexion in school in Los Angeles. “Beauty has nothing to do with the outside,” Kheris said. “It has to do with your inside by being nice, smart, creative. Being beautiful means confidently knowing that you’re enough just the way you are. When I look at myself in the mirror, I say nice things like, ‘I am smart. I am kind. I am confident.’ It’s empowering.” Earlier this year, Kheris’ 22-year-old sister, Taylor Pollard, tweeted a picture of Rogers after a fashion show that has more than 31,000 retweets and 84,000 likes. Comments came in praising her skin, hair, entire look and attitude, which helped boost her self-esteem - https://twitter.com/TaylorAndrea_/ status/846101800067379200. Just a few days shy of her 11th birthday, Kheris spoke with The Undefeated about what it means to flex in your complexion, her definition of beautiful and
Kheris Rogers her favorite thing about living in L.A. (Hint: It has to do with ice cream.) Why did you create Flexin’ In My Complexion? I was bullied for my dark skin complexion when I was younger [where I had to transfer to another school], so I felt that I needed to help empower others to feel comfortable in their skin color. I want to help others feel confident in their skin, knowing it is beautiful no matter how dark or light they are. You’re only 10 and you were bullied for your skin color? When I was in the first grade, I was one of four black kids in my class. They would call me names and wouldn’t play with me. There was an instance when we had to draw ourselves, and my teacher gave me a black crayon instead of a brown one. I felt really

uncomfortable. Your maturity and confident self-image is something that many 20- and 30-year-olds don’t have. Where did that come from? It came from my family always telling me that I’m pretty and how being beautiful on the inside is the most important thing. My grandmother would always tell us to flex in our complexion. She put that in my head, and then I kept telling myself that.
Outside of your family, who else is a role model? Tyra Banks! I love how she walks on and off the runway with so much confidence. But what I really love about her is how she empowers other women, and that’s what I want to do. Who inspires your style? I’ve always liked Zendaya’s style from watching her on the Disney Channel. My style is a mix of very girly girl and hip-hop. Some kids in my school would tease me on my style too, but everyone is unique and I love being creative with my style. What was your reaction when you saw that Alicia Keys gave you a shoutout on Instagram? I wanted to cry because of how surprised and excited I was. I looked on my phone, screamed and doublechecked to make sure it was really her. I called my mom and was like, ‘OMG, Alicia Keys just posted my picture on her page!’ What’s your favorite Alicia Keys song? ‘Fallin’,’ I love that song. What’s your favorite part about living in Los Angeles? The drive-thru Baskin-Robbins that they built right by my house. https://theundefeated.com/features/ten-year-old-designer-kherisrogers-flexin-in-my-complexion/

Build Your own Enterprise Grade Virtual Assistant: Azure Bot Service By: Lili Cheng Corporate Vice President, Artificial Intelligence and Research Group
W
hether in a vehicle looking to find the nearest gas station, or on a factory floor needing to stop the production line, it is easy to imagine ways in which conversation-based interactions can enhance experiences and increase productivity. We’re evolving from a world where humans have had to learn and adapt to computers to one where computers are learning how to understand and interact with humans in a more natural way. Azure Bot Service (https://azure. microsoft.com/en-us/services/botservice/) helps developers build, connect, deploy, and manage intelligent bots to interact naturally with users on websites, apps, Cortana, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Slack, Facebook Messenger, and more. With over 360,000+ registered Azure Bot Service developers, we are constantly improving our tools and framework to make them more productive. Today, we’re announcing the preview of an open source bot solution accelerator for virtual assistants.
This solution accelerator simplifies the creation of branded virtual assistants, enabling developers to get started in minutes. Additionally, the Bot Framework software development kit and Tools version 4.1 is generally available, enabling developers to be more productive with bot development. Finally, Microsoft has signed an agreement to acquire XOXCO, a software product design studio most known for its conversational AI and bot development capabilities.
Create a branded virtual assistant We have seen a significant need from our customers and partners to deliver a conversational assistant tailored to their brand, personalized to their customers, and made available across a broad range of conversational applications and devices. We believe all organizations should have the ability to build branded virtual assistants. We have taken best practices developed while working with partners to develop
their own assistants and, in continuing with Microsoft’s open source approach for bot development, have made this solution accelerator for virtual assistants available on GitHub, allowing for full control over the end user experience built on a set of foundational capabilities. Additionally, the experience can be infused with intelligence about the end-user and any device/ecosystem for a truly integrated conversational experience. The scope of this functionality is broad, typically offering end users a range of capabilities. To increase developer productivity and enable a vibrant ecosystem of reusable conversational experiences, we are providing developers initial examples of reusable conversational skills. These skills can be added into a conversational application to light up a specific conversation experience, such as finding a point of interest, interacting with a calendar, tasks, or email, with more to follow. How to Start an Online Store From Your Dorm Room or Home Office By Arianna O'Dell
"I want to start a side-hustle!"
I
've heard this statement from countless friends. When I encourage them to start something they tell me they need to have thousands of dollars saved up or a great idea. I quickly tell them that both of these things are not true. Today, you can start a side-hustle with as little as $20 with a mediocre idea. You don't have to have the best idea in the world to get started, simply start something and improve it as you go. I started an online store for fun and recommend it to anyone looking to get started with side-hustling.
is an easy way to start your own store where you can print on item at a time and have it fulfilled directly to your customer. With this technology you can run your store from anywhere in the world with an internet connection and your computer.
Create mockups and designs with ease. "But I'm not a designer" is the biggest thing stopping my friends from starting their own stores. It's okay, I'm not a designer either. I come up with designs and then work with talented designers to make my ideas a reality. Even if you're not a graphic designer, you can take text based designs and put them on mockups to create dazzling products. Two tools I use are SmartMocks (https://smartmockups.com) and PlaceIt (https:// placeit.net/?rfsn=1776525.ab61be3). The Envato Marketplace (https://envato.com) also has thousands of mockups and graphics that you can purchase and use for commercial use.
Setup a storefront.
If you're thinking about starting a store, these three resources can help you get started.
Choose a print-on-demand supplier. I used to make gifts for my friends and family and one day decided to put it online. To my surprise my good and bad ideas quickly started selling. It was amazing to see what people on the internet will pay for and today I'm now making a steady stream of income from my store. To fulfill orders in my store I use print-on-demand technology. I've written about this technology before and I'll continue to sing its praises until I die. Print- on-demand
Hundreds of storefronts exist today. From Amazon (www.amazon.com) to Tictail (https://tictail.com) to Etsy (www.etsy.com) there are so many places you can sell your products that you can get setup on in a mere matter of hours. Other out of the box e-commerce solutions like SquareSpace (www.squarespace. com), Wix (www.wox.com), WooCommerce (https:// woocommerce.com) and Shopify (www.shopify.com) also exist for you to quickly setup a storefront. Using these tools you can start a business from anywhere you can fit your computer. Whether you're in a dorm room or at home, start making your business dreams come true today. What are you waiting for? Take the next few hours and get to work on your store. If you start now, you can have one ready by dinnertime! www.inc.com/arianna-odell/how-to-start-an-onlinestore-from-your-dorm-room-or-home-office.html?utm_ medium=40digest.ad25.20181127.carousel&utm_ source=email&utm_content=&utm_campaign=campaign

Minister Farrakhan Has a Message for America! Statement from the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan regarding his trip to Iran and message to Iran and America
Minister Farrakhan (courtesy photo) "I am not and have never been an enemy to America, nor the people of America. However, I love America enough to speak unpleasant truths that are in the best interests of an erring nation that perhaps
she may change her conduct and course. I have an abiding love for the right to free speech, the right to a free press and the right every human being has to hear the truth. It is only truth spoken in season that can bring us what we desire of freedom, justice, equality and, ultimately, peace. "I was invited to Tehran University to speak to students and engage in a dialogue with Iranian students. I was also invited to meet with other members of Iranian society for discussions about their concerns for their nation and concerns about world affairs, in particular the sanctions placed on Iran by President Donald Trump and his advisors. "I never led a chant that called for the death of America or Israel, contrary to misreporting in U.S., British and Jewish publications and the intentional, malicious and false reinterpretation of my words. There is nothing more important than truth today. The truth of anyone and anything is enough to condemn any individual or institution. But to make media mischief by altering my words from their places is a betrayal of the right to free speech, the blessing of a free press and a violation of the people’s right to know. It is wrong and shameful that journalists and news organizations that should seek the truth would traffic in such lies. "I never led a chant calling for death to America. To say otherwise is a blatant falsehood and an attempt to paint me as an enemy in a very dangerous time as tension rises between America and Iran and nations around the earth reject unjust sanctions and heavy-handed U.S. foreign policy. I asked a question about how to pronounce the chant in Farsi during my meeting with Iranian students and an examination of the video shows just that. My point was to engage students in a talk about what gives a nation perpetuity versus that which undermines and destroys a nation. "Evil, falsehood, and violation of divine law doom nations to destruction and the holy books of the

Business - Competition world’s three greatest monotheistic religions warn us of such. So if Iran is moving as a nation to obey God’s law, to respect and educate women and to pursue righteousness, she is on the right course. And, if America has violated the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the indigenous people and destroyed them, and if she has done the same for the Black and the Poor. America, unfortunately, has always leaned toward and protected the interests of the White, the Rich and the Powerful. "So to stand with Iran against unjust sanctions and mass punishment is to stand in the proper place. To warn America that these sanctions—which have been rejected by the European Union, France, Britain, Germany, Russia, China, and other countries—are wrong is to stand in the proper place. I am trying to help America face the error of her ways and see the enmity she is sparking across the globe alongside a growing loss of friendship. This is not good for America, nor the world and only marches us steadily to acrimony, conflict and the final war of Armageddon spoken of in the bible. "Some 40 years ago, Iranian students threw off the yoke of American domination through the overthrow of the Shah of Iran, a brutal dictator and tool of U.S. foreign policy. While the Iranians have problems to solve, as do every nation and people on earth. They do not wish to be under the thumb of America again. As I said several times in Tehran, the U.S. sanctions are a mistake. And, while dialogue should be a good thing, the U.S. has a history of lying and breaking her commitments. To survive, America must turn away from yesterday’s policies, go forward in a new spirit and seek a new direction. "America will never be undone by the angry chants of Iranians or others who suffer under U.S. foreign policy. No foreign enemy will destroy America, but she faces divine judgment from God Himself. She faces an internal rot with her huge fiscal deficits, her fractured political system, her ugly political and public discourse, her frayed social networks, her rejection of spiritual values and a penchant for violence and mass shootings. She is a troubled nation. Her leadership is spiritually blind to the hour at hand and it appears as though they have the hearts of beasts. ""Despite U.S. efforts to foment disunity and rebellion inside of Iran, the Iranians have the right to resolve their own problems without outside interference, just as the U.S. has claimed its right to conduct elections free of Russian influence. Self-determination is a right of every nation. The Muslim world needs unity and must find the path to reconciliation despite efforts to pit Muslims against one another. Satan seeks to divide
Muslims and wants them to kill each other, while Allah God tells us in the Quran to be united. "It is also shameful that my visit to Iran was used by political hucksters and cynics to try to affect the recent political elections in the United States. The demonization of Louis Farrakhan will not solve serious U.S. problems. So despite Donald Trump Jr.’s call for Democrats to disavow me, America needs a clear warner, who will speak the truth without compromise and without fearing the censure of any censurer. I am neither Right, Left nor Center. I stand on the side of Truth and wherever the Truth may be found. No political party or political leader has an exclusive lock on the Truth." "The choice, however, remains with the American people and those who are in leadership. May Allah God bless this people and nation to make the proper choice." https://lasentinel.net/statement-from-the-honorable-minister-louisfarrakhan-regarding-his-trip-to-iran-and-message-to-iran-andamerica.html

Accenture's Advice on How to Get Started with Automation Edited by Chris Preimesberger, eWeek
A
s artificial intelligence and machine learning offerings grow in popularity and move into production systems, enterprises are increasingly looking to utilize these technologies to automate critical business processes--from infrastructure maintenance to data management to customer services and beyond. While there can be significant, tangible value in embracing automation technologies, realizing their full potential requires more than just flipping the “on” switch. Your automation journey should be well thought out ahead of time, attuned to the specific needs of your organization. In this eWEEK Data Point article, Brian Sullivan, Managing Director of Oracle Technology Delivery at Accenture, provides six steps that he believes are important to developing and executing a successful automation strategy.
Data Point No. 1: Spot problem areas and create a vision for the future We’ve virtually always found that those who look to incorporate new technology merely for the sake of it guarantee their own failure. Don’t dive headlong into automation. Instead, leverage the data at your disposal, and take the time to identify inefficiencies that could be improved upon the most by automation. Consider: Where are your teams spending the most amount of time? Which processes are most in need of improvements? Once you’ve determined your problem areas, you’ll be well-positioned to map out the automation journey. You can clearly define desired outcomes, projected results, and KPIs (key performance indicators) for ongoing measurement. This is absolutely critical, as it’ll serve as your north star as you map out and then execute your adoption strategy.
Data Point No. 2: Socialize the project Automation, despite its popularity, has also generated much fear of job change or loss. To avoid
pushback as much as possible, make sure to socialize each initiative with stakeholders early on. Explain your vision: the project’s scope, the reasons behind the changes, and the expected results. This will enable them to help you on the automation journey, adjusting the project to their needs and avoid disrupting their work as much as possible. It is equally important to ensure that your organization’s executives are aligned with your vision. This helps ensure continued support from an investment standpoint.
Data Point No. 3: Assess your options Before you broadly implement your automation strategy, examine your options. If possible, try out a few avenues in small pilot projects, and benchmark the results against each other. Make sure you have well-defined evaluation criteria and consider your organization’s current technology stack to ensure that the solutions you pick will integrate easily within your IT architecture.
Data Point No. 4: Embrace an agile mindset Because automation brings such tremendous change to an organization, enterprises should proceed incrementally. Very much like the agile philosophy applied to software development, organizations should automate intelligently-- one process at a time- to get valuable feedback and adjust the direction accordingly. This not only ensures a more rapid pace, but also provides opportunities to learn from each implementation, increasing the chances of success for following projects.
Data Point No. 5: Improve your organization’s tech, but don’t forget about the people Enterprises spending a lot of time and effort on automation initiatives sometimes find themselves unhappy with the results, expecting either better productivity improvements or greater ROI. Often, it is
40 November 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
redrobotsystems.co.uk not because the implementation wasn’t successful, but because no changes were made on the human side to best capitalize on the newly automated processes. Worse, sometimes changes enacted by automation have a negative impact on the teams by disrupting their workflow. A good way to avoid this pitfall is to establish a longer term digital labor management process, with visibility across all implementations as well as a continuous feedback channel to ensure that normal operations– “business as usual”–are not being disrupted, and that productivity increases are consistent with the needs of each team. In this way, you’re well-situated to achieve expected ROI, and from there properly reinvest the time saved by implementing automation.
Data Point No. 6: Designate a Chief Automation Officer Because automation is a continuous project, much like the journey to the cloud, I’d highly recommend designating a group and/or an executive responsible for automation initiatives moving forward. A Chief Automation Officer not only provides the oversight necessary to ensure initiatives are data-driven, consistent, and aligned with the business, it also creates accountability as well as a framework for future projects. www.eweek.com/innovation/accenture-s-advice-on-howto-get-started-with-automation?utm_medium=email&utm_ campaign=EWK_NL_EP_20181121_STR4L2&dni=458470 660&rni=25652266

Social Music App Playlist Lets You Listen to Music with Others in Real Time
A
new app called Playlist (www.playlist.com) aims to make music a more social experience than what’s offered today by the major music platforms like Apple Music, Pandora or Spotify, for example. In Playlist, you can find others who share your musical tastes and join group chats where you listen to playlists together in real time. You can collaborate on playlists, too. “The world has gone social, but music has been largely left behind. That’s a real gap,” explains Katz, as to why the founders wanted to build Playlist in the first place. “Ever since we started listening to music from our mobile phones, it’s become an isolated experience. And music is the number one thing we do on our phones,” she says. The idea they came up with was to unite music and messaging by synchronizing streams, so people could
listen to songs together at the same time and chat while they do so. “Out of the gate, we saw 10 times the engagement of Pandora. People have, on average, 60 interactions per hour — like chats, likes, follows, joins, adds and creates,” Katz says. The social aspects of the app involves a following/follower model, and presents playlists from the people you follow in your home feed, much like a music-focused version of Instagram. A separate Discover section lets you find more people to follow or join in other popular listening and chat sessions. At launch, the app has a catalog of more than 45 million songs and has a music license for the U.S. It plans to monetize through advertising. Playlist is a free download for iOS. An Android version is in the works. https://techcrunch.com/2018/11/27/social-musicapp-playlist-lets-you-listen-to-music-with-others-inreal-time/?utm_medium=40digest.ad25.20181127. carousel&utm_source=email&utm_content=&utm_ campaign=campaign

Shopping Online today? Here's How to Keep Your Personal Information Safe By Nicole Spector
A
s Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals pour in from virtually every major retailer, many of us are in heavy-duty shopping mode. Despite all its perks, shopping online has its potential hazards, the most serious of them being data breaches. Still, there are measures we can take to protect our data when making transactions online. We’ve rounded up a list of expert tips consumers should consider all year long.
Ditch debit cards. Only shop with credit cards secure payment systems. I learned the hard way to never use my debit account for making purchases online. Once upon a time, I gave my debit info to make a purchase on Zappos. Some three years after making any purchase on the site, I went to check my bank statements and saw hundreds of dollars had been spent at Zappos. After all those years, someone (or some bot) hacked into that antiquated account and went to town. Though my bank fortunately reimbursed me, I had to wait a couple of weeks and was without a debit card for about the same amount of time. Now I only use PayPal, and link to a single credit card for online shopping (which also helps me stay on budget, since all non-essential spending is done on that card). Ian McClarty, president & CEO, PhoenixNAP, a Global IT services provider, recommends using
ApplePay, AndroidPay or PayPal.
Get a virtual one-time credit card number from your bank McLarty also recommends getting a one-time credit card number from your bank.“This prevents your primary card from getting compromised, saving you a lot of hassle changing card numbers, moving recurring bills, etc.” says McLarty. I had no idea such a thing existed until McLarty brought it up, and now I’m absolutely consulting my credit card company about this so I can more confidently go crazy on Cyber Monday. “Several card issuers offer virtual card numbers which add an additional layer of security for online purchases, keeping your actual credit card numbers safe from any retail data breaches, and especially useful for making purchases from web sites that users don’t 100 percent trust,” says Brittney Mayer, credit strategist at Cardrates.com.
Use a card with a low limit
this holiday season,” notes Gates Marshall, director, cyber services at CompliancePoint. “[If] the card is compromised, the extent of the damage will be lessened.” Bonus tip: This can also be helpful if you’re working with a budget and want to ensure you don’t overspend.
Avoid buying on public computers “As much is it might be tempting to enjoy a hot latte and do all of your holiday shopping from your favorite coffee shop, avoid using public Wi-Fi while doing any shopping,” advises Tom Kellermann, chief cybersecurity officer at Carbon Black. “With public Wi-Fi anyone with some computer acumen can view what you are browsing and steal your personal information.”
Use a VPN Using a virtual private network (VPN) enhances your privacy by masking your IP address, and essentially, throwing off prospective hackers to your location (you can be in California, for instance, but choose to appear to be in
“ U s i n g a low limit credit card for online purchases that’s not typically used for recurring payments is one way to protect yourself

Amsterdam). This is a tool that was traditionally used by corporations to add protection to sensitive data, but they’re now quite popular with consumers. “Using a VPN for shopping online will secure your connection and encrypt any personal data/financial info you are sharing with the retailer, which is especially important if you’re shopping on the go and using public wifi on a smartphone or other device,” says Harold Li, vice president at ExpressVPN. “A VPN also hides your information from the internet service provider, restricting them from building a profile of your shopping habits.” You can download VPNs for free, but I recommend using one that you pay for annually (I use PrivateInternetAccess, which costs
about $40 a year) so that you have access to customer service and security updates.
Update your software “If you’re looking to take your cyber self-defense to the next level this holiday shopping season, make updates to all software on your computer [and that you’re] using the latest version of your browser (Firefox is a great option),” adds Kellerman.
Practice ‘good password hygiene’ Richard Bird, chief customer information officer at Ping Identity, reminds all consumers to practice “good password hygiene”. This means changing your passwords often and creating ones that can’t be easily hacked.
“The best password is a series of logical words strung together that also encompass length; for example, ‘horsesfencefieldgrass’,” says Bird. “These make for more complex passwords that are easy to remember, but more difficult to crack. Stay away from using the names of your kids, spouse, pets and birthdates. You may use the same password for Facebook and Instagram, but don’t use that same password for important accounts like your banks or email. Make sure those important accounts have secure and unique passwords.” www.nbcnews.com/better/ business/shopping-online-todayhere-s-how-keep-your-info-safencna938431?utm_medium=10today. ad1.20181123.421.2&utm_ source=email&utm_content=article&utm_ campaign=10-for-today---4.0-styling

For the First Time, a Black Woman Will Lead The Harvard Crimson By Amy Chozick
W
riters and editors at The Harvard Crimson have gone on to be presidents (John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt), tech billionaires (Steve Ballmer, the former chief executive of Microsoft), news media bosses (Jeff Zucker, the head of CNN) and a number of my colleagues at The New York Times. But what the newspaper had in power, it lacked in diversity. Now Kristine E. Guillaume will lead The Crimson’s “146th guard,” making her the third black president and first black woman to helm the organization since its founding in 1873. Ms. Guillaume, a junior majoring in literature, history and African-American studies, won the job with a promise to steer the paper toward a more diverse, digital future. The college and, by extension, The Crimson have long served as pipelines to the American establishment, but both have struggled to become more diverse. “If my being elected to the Crimson presidency as the first black woman affirms anyone’s sense of belonging at Harvard, then that will continue to affirm the work that I’m doing,” Ms. Guillaume said as she was preparing to visit her parents in Queens for Thanksgiving. The position of Crimson president holds an almost mythical place in journalism. The author Cleveland Amory, who held the job in the 1930s, famously said that “once you had been president of The Harvard Crimson in your senior year at Harvard there was very little, in after life, for you.” Nearly 40 of Ms. Guillaume’s peers at the paper had deliberated over who would get the job in a grueling, monthslong process — known as the “Turkey Shoot” — that can be rife with political allegiances and backstabbing. She said she was appreciative of the heft of the position, and hoped to lift up different types of journalistic voices and perspectives. “It’s your job, no matter what stage of leadership, to make sure you are imparting knowledge to younger writers, but also reporting on things especially pertinent in today’s climate with cultural sensitivity,” Ms. Guillaume said. Born to a Chinese mother and Haitian father, both physicians, Ms. Guillaume, 20, said she took an interest in journalism while growing up in Queens. On Sundays,
with her mother on hospital duty, her father took her and her younger sister — along with the weekend edition of The Times — to a diner for breakfast. As part of the ritual, he would ask his daughters to read columns by David Brooks and Paul Krugman “to get a conservative and a liberal view,” Ms. Guillaume said. “Both of my parents have a strong emphasis on education and knowing what’s going on in the world around us,” Ms. Guillaume said. “They were always very encouraging of us to break out of our middle school or high school problems and think about larger forces at play.” But Ms. Guillaume’s parents did not want her to spend so much time at The Crimson, hoping she would pursue medicine or law. “It’s the classic immigrant parent narrative,” Ms. Guillaume said. She let out a sigh. “There’s a lot of tension that I don’t take more science classes.” Ms. Guillaume said she planned to pursue a doctorate in African-American studies and a career in academia, with some writing on the side. She cited the author TaNehisi Coates as a role model. At Townsend Harris High School in Queens, Ms. Guillaume edited the literary magazine, The Phoenix, which had a rivalry with the school’s newspaper, The Classic, where her younger sister, Isabelle, now serves as editor in chief. At Harvard, Ms. Guillaume has edited Let’s Go travel guides on the side, a job that included a stint as a reporter in Lyon, France. And for the past three years, she has been part of The Crimson’s “news board,” which is what the newspaper calls the editors and reporters who cover the campus and beyond. She has written on immigration and, taking on one of the paper’s most high-pressure beats, has covered the school’s leadership. In a recent article, she wrote that, for the first time, four of Harvard’s schools were led by black women. “She is able to command a room, but also be a really friendly, approachable presence,” said Leah Yared, a senior who has mentored Ms. Guillaume at The Crimson, including discussing coverage and writing articles with her at Tasty Burger on Harvard Square. Ms. Yared, one of the few black women in the paper’s top echelon, helped with the process of choosing the

Kristine E. Guillaume Crimson president this year. The students involved in the Turkey Shoot followed a process that included implicit bias training. “The Crimson has historically had problems attracting
underrepresented minorities and retaining those people,” Ms. Yared said. Those problems aren’t limited to The Crimson. Indeed, the news organizations that some Crimson alumni will strive to join have remained overwhelmingly white and male. In 2018, people of color made up 22.2% of employees of daily newspapers, according to a survey conducted by the American Society of Newspaper Editors. “One of the significant reasons that trust in newsrooms has declined is simply because we don’t reflect the audiences we’re trying to reach, which means we’re missing stories,” said Raju Narisetti, a journalism professor at Columbia University. Derek Xiao, the current president of The Crimson, said Ms. Guillaume’s vision to make the paper into a nimbler, more digitally oriented publication, as well as her work as chairwoman of the paper’s diversity and inclusivity committee, made her pitch stand out at “14 P” — Harvardese for 14 Plympton St., the location of The Crimson’s redbrick offices. “The Crimson is a volunteer organization, so making people feel like their work is valuable and that they themselves are valuable in this building is important,” Mr. Xiao said. On a recent Sunday night, Ms. Guillaume had been reading a book for her class on mass incarceration and listening to Rihanna when Mr. Xiao and the rest of the Crimson masthead called to tell her she had gotten the job. “I screamed into the phone,” Ms. Guillaume said. “It was a very, very shrill scream.” Ms. Yared told her friend and mentee to brace for an onslaught of attention. “Prepare to be embarrassed,” she texted her. www.nytimes.com/2018/11/25/business/ media/harvard-crimson-president-first-blackwoman.html?utm_medium=10today.media.20181127.421.1&utm_ source=email&utm_content=article&utm_campaign=10-for-today--4.0-styling

Did the Marriott Data Breach Impact You? Here's What to Do to be Safe, Now and in the Future. By Kaya Yurieff, Jordan Valinsky
I
f you've stayed at a Starwood hotel in recent years, there's a good chance you've been impacted by a massive data breach that potentially exposed the personal data of about 500 million guests. Marriott — which owns Starwood hotels such as the St. Regis and the Westin — on recently disclosed that the Starwood guest reservation system had been hacked, in a breach dating back to 2014. For 327 million people, Marriott says, the exposed information includes names, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers and dates of birth. For millions of others, credit card numbers and card expiration dates were potentially compromised. This kind of information could be used to steal your identity and open bank accounts, credit cards or loans in your name. It's the second biggest corporate data breach in history, behind one involving Yahoo, which said last year that 3 billion accounts among several of its brands were compromised. Marriott said it will start emailing users who were impacted and it has set up a website with information about the breach (https:// answers.kroll.com). In the meantime, here's what you
can do to protect yourself:
Change your password Marriott says guests should change their passwords regularly and pick ones that aren't easily guessed. For example, instead of a common phrase, choose a combination of four or more unrelated words with numbers, characters and a mix of upper and lower-case letters. You should also have different passwords for all the services you use. "Changing your password will just add one more roadblock to a potential hacker getting into your system," said Aaron Brantly, a cybersecurity expert at Virginia Tech. Many websites, including social media and financial accounts, offer two-factor authentication for an added layer of security. Even if someone obtains your password, you can't access your accounts without a second piece of information, like a code texted to your phone.
Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity Marriott recommends customers keep an eye on their Starwood Preferred Guest account for any suspicious activity. Guests should
also check their bank, retirement, and brokerage accounts, as well as credit card statements to look for any unauthorized transactions. Some experts recommend signing up for credit monitoring services or identity theft protection. A more extreme step is putting a freeze on your credit, which blocks anyone from accessing your credit reports without permission. "Unfortunately, the reality is [these consumers] have to monitor continuously, for generally the rest of their lives," said Brantly. "These types of accounts are sold regularly on the dark web. ... You can usually buy credit card information for a couple dollars per credit card online." Vivek Lakshman, VP of innovation at cybersecurity firm ThumbSignIn, says consumers can also enroll in services like WebWatcher -- which Marriott is providing for free for a year -- to track their exposure. These sites monitor websites where personal information is shared and alerts consumers if there's evidence of their information exposed online.
Open a separate credit card for online transactions Yair Levy, a cybersecurity and information systems expert at Nova Southeastern University,

recommends having a credit card dedicated to online shopping. This makes it easier to track transactions and spot fraudulent activity. If that credit card is compromised, you also won't have to update automatic payments for things like bills.
Limit the information you share Experts say not to provide information unless it's absolutely required to buy a product or service. "Consumers should limit what they provide companies based on their need to know. Often, companies gather data that they may not need, but take if volunteered," said Marty Puranik, the CEO of Atlantic.Net, a cloud computing and hosting services provider. For example, a travel company may ask for passport information, but it may not be required. If it is, you can ask what other forms of identification you can provide instead. "If you give lower level information, or information that can be changed -- for example, a second credit card to verify your identity -- it is easier to change and protect that then a
social security number or passport ID," he said. But this isn't always possible. If you are traveling internationally, a company like Marriott may require a passport number.
Avoid saving credit card information on websites Experts recommend minimizing the number of places where you store credit card information. However, this doesn't mean your data will be safe or protected -- it just helps cut down on the risk. Another option is to use services such as PayPal, Google Pay, or Apple Pay, which let you pay for goods and services without divulging your credit card to the company you're buying from.
Be vigilant Consumers should work under the assumption cyber criminals already have access to their information as breaches become increasingly common. "Having a very healthy dose of skepticism moving forward is probably the best way to
safeguard yourself in an era where all your information has been divulged, unfortunately," said Brantly. Experts caution internet users to be wary of "phishing" attempts by bad actors looking to steal your data, including through bogus emails, fake links and fraudulent websites. On its informational website about the hack, Marriott reminded members the company will not ask you to provide your password by phone or email. "Know you are consistently being exposed [and] consistently under threat -- not necessarily through any fault of your own but accidental disclosures by companies or carelessness by companies. It requires us in the modern era to be vigilant consistently," said Brantly. www.cnn.com/2018/11/30/tech/ marriott-breach-what-to-do/index. html Image credits: fightingidentitycrimes.com

Black Lives Matter Flips Houses for Low-income Families
A
n activist group is getting into the home renovation business in order to help those in need. Black Lives Matter Louisville has begun flipping vacant properties to address the shortage of affordable housing in West Louisville. The group has already purchased at least six vacant homes and plans to renovate them for low-income or homeless families. "The goals are just to house people," said Chanelle Helm, the lead organizer for BLM Louisville. "There's just way too many vacant and abandoned properties in West Louisville alone, that we can house all these people." One of those people is mother of three Tiffany Brown. Brown's oldest son recently moved out of her home because it's not big enough for her whole family. "I've always dreamed of having
my own home," Brown said. The homes BLM has purchased are fixer-uppers and will require significant renovation before families like Brown's can move in. Brown said she plans to help with the construction. "I will come out and help put the walls in, put the floor in, whatever I need to do," she said. Helm said the projects are funded entirely with donations from the community. BLM hasn't accepted any grant money or government aid. "We're also not going to be cheap with the products. We're putting in for it, we need to get like quality, sustainable products. We can go green with a lot of stuff," Helm added. There is no formal application process, and Helm said they won't discriminate against people who have criminal records.
"Those are exactly the people that we need to get in the homes," Helm explained. "The reason why they committed whatever crime it is, is because of a lack, a lack of something, lack of necessities, a lack of bare essentials, a lack of dignity, especially." For Brown, who works and goes to school, the house is an opportunity to put down roots. "(I) work hard, and I just want to take care of my kids and put them in the best place possible," Brown said. Though it'll likely be a few months before Brown's home is move-in ready, she said there is one thing she can't wait to have. "I am looking forward to having a screen door. I don't have a screen door on my house now and (I want to) open up my screen door and let some fresh air in," Brown said. www.wlky.com/article/black-livesmatter-flips-houses-for-low-incomefamilies/25350577

2 Black Women Could Define American Democracy for the Next Generation By Ja’han Jones
P
eering at her television screen, she could see the whole dais during Richard Nixon’s impeachment hearings — a sequence of the same drab business suit repeated one after the other, with each accented by some understated accouterment. A gray suit with a blue tie. A blue suit with a gray tie. A black suit with a brown wristwatch. But sitting in her family’s living room in 1974, Sherrilyn Ifill’s eyes were transfixed on radiant color: the bright red of Rep. Barbara Jordan’s dress, the brown of her skin. Ifill watched the hearings religiously with her family, inspired by the ways in which the South’s first black female representative waxed poetic on her country and criticized its corrupt leader. At that time, there was no possible way of knowing just how instructional those moments were. “It wasn’t as though the men in that room looked like they wanted to listen to her,” Ifill recalled. “They just couldn’t not listen to her.” Ifill is the president and director-counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF), a role she has held since 2013. She and her associate Director-Counsel, Janai Nelson, said they remember discovering their passions for civil rights work early in their lives. Ifill was reared in a politically minded family and, as a child, desperately wished she had been alive during the height of the civil rights movement. “I used to feel like I’d missed it,” she said, seemingly nodding to the similarity between that period and the current one. “I wondered how it could be possible that I wasn’t born at the time of this movement.” Nelson also recalled being conscious of racial injustice in America at a young age. “The issue of racial injustice has been one that I really can’t remember not being aware of, which in some ways is quite sad,” she told HuffPost. Thurgood Marshall founded the LDF in 1940 and intended it as a war chest to allow the NAACP to provide aid to those around the country scorned by systemic oppression. The LDF has been separate from the NAACP since 1957. Its history is abundant in high-
profile cases, from Brown v. Board of Education, in which the Supreme Court ruled against de jure school segregation, to the LDF’s involvement in the Shelby County v. Holder voting rights case, which ultimately resulted in a repeal of key provisions of the Voting Rights Act. When Marshall died in 1993, Nelson was a freshman at UCLA Law School. Inspired by his legacy, she earned an externship in the LDF’s regional office in Los Angeles as a student. Ifill and Nelson work together to allocate the LDF’s resources in support of civil rights protections across the country. The two are seasoned attorneys who frequent the cable news circuit and have taken on public roles as leaders of what is arguably America’s foremost civil rights organization. Both are in their second stint of work with the LDF, after having taken time away to work in academia and raise their children. As Ifill remembered, her first go-round with the organization was not entirely conducive to new motherhood. “The first time I felt my baby kick was during a deposition,” she said. “I conducted my first trial pregnant. I weaned my eldest daughter to argue my first appellate case.” She credits the experience for inspiring her brand of leadership ― one that places emphasis on family time and a healthy home life. And it’s clear that Ifill’s and Nelson’s intersections ― as black women who are also mothers ― factor in their legal agenda or at least enhance their perspective on the difficulties endured by Americans of various identities. For example, under Ifill’s and Nelson’s leadership, the LDF has filed amicus briefs affirming transgender rights and briefs affirming the rights of black women in the workplace. The fund also released a thorough report on Brett Kavanaugh’s civil rights record before his nomination to the Supreme Court. And with the breadth and depth of issues the LDF addresses, the contours of American democracy could very well be shaped by the group’s handiwork,
76 November 2018 Black Business News www.blackbbusinessnews.net 1-323-291-7819
particularly when it comes to opposing an administration committed to rolling back civil rights protections. President Donald Trump’s inclination to run roughshod over his political opponents has earned him victories — potentially lasting ones — in his deregulatory agenda and judicial appointments. On both fronts, the LDF has been a staunch opponent of the administration. Under Ifill’s and Nelson’s leadership, the LDF has co-signed briefs or sued the government outright over matters of housing inequality, the decision to rescind protected status from Haitians in America, affirmative action on college campuses, Trump’s thinly veiled voter suppression efforts, the his administration’s proposed changes to the census and more. “I think we’ve only sued a president once before in the nearly 80-year history of the organization,” Ifill said. “We sued Ben Carson. We sued Betsy DeVos. This is not normal, and it’s not because we’ve changed.” Simply, the Trump administration’s rollback of civil rights protections is more systemic and is fartherreaching than prior administrations’. “With this administration, it’s like drinking out of a firehose,” Ifill said. “This is a very aggressive administration, and with many of the actions it’s taken, I think it’s fair to say it’s been stretching all of us.” Nelson said they are worried not just about new threats to civil rights but also about maintaining the fight against those that existed long before this administration. “The things we’ve been working on for years cannot just be cast aside in order to respond to every antic coming out of the White House,” she said. She added that ensuring access to clean water and efficient transportation, for example, are
initiatives the organization has pursued for years and that making progress in those areas r e q u i r e s prioritizing and making tough decisions about the most pressing threats coming from the administration. That concern about attrition takes on added m e a n i n g , though, during a time when the threats to civil rights are ubiquitous. he canonisation cause of Fr. Augustus Tolton received important approval from the Vatican’s historical consultants earlier this year, moving the cause forward. Fr. Tolton, a former slave, is the first recognised US diocesan priest of African descent. Chicago
Cardinal Francis George opened his cause for canonisation in 2011, giving the priest the title “servant of God.” The consultants in Rome ruled in March that the “positio” – a document equivalent to a doctoral dissertation on a person’s life – was acceptable and the research on Fr Tolton’s life was finished, said Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Joseph
Perry, postulator for the cause. “They have a story on a life that they deem is credible, properly documented. It bodes well for the remaining steps of scrutiny – those remaining steps being the theological commission that will make a final determination on his virtues,” Bishop Perry explained.
In general, two approved miracles through Fr. Tolton’s intercession are needed for him to be beatified and canonised. Six historical consultants ruled unanimously on the Tolton “positio,” compiled by a team in Rome led by Andrea Ambrosi, based on hundreds of pages of research completed in Chicago. While working on the document, Ambrosi’s team asked Bishop Perry why it took so long to open a cause for Fr Tolton, who died in 1897. “We told them that AfricanAmericans basically had no status in the Church to be considered at that time. Some people didn’t think we had souls. They were Fr. intercession have been sent to Rome. “We’re hoping and our fingers are crossed and we’re praying that at least one of them might be acceptable for his beatification,” Bishop Perry said. Born into slavery, young Augustus fled to freedom with his mother and two siblings through the woods of northern Missouri and across the Mississippi River while being pursued by bounty hunters and soldiers. He was only 9 years old. The small family made their home in Quincy, Illinois, a sanctuary for runaway slaves. Growing up in Quincy and serving at Mass, Augustus felt a call to the priesthood, but because of rampant racism, no seminary in the United States would accept him. He headed to Rome, convinced he would become a missionary priest serving in Africa. However, after ordination, he was sent back to his hometown to be a missionary to the community there. He was such a good preacher that many white people filled the pews for his Masses, along with
Italy, France and countries in Africa. People receive Father Tolton’s story well, Bishop Perry said. “There’s also the element of surprise. … People always presume that we had black priests,” he told the Chicago Catholic, the archdiocesan newspaper. “There’s an element of surprise at how the Church handled some of these more naughty issues of reception and acceptance,” said the prelate, who is AfricanAmerican. “They thought that this was pretty usual, but they were surprised to see that there were certain individuals who were not so receptive to a Bishop Joseph Perry nwitimes.com person like (Father) Tolton and others.” Father Tolton did not speak out black people. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Hollis Smith, SCMSDC’s founder and president during the council’s formative years. Hollis was a colleague and mentor who generously served as both inspiration and advisor to SCMSDC presidents who followed him. We all – supplier diversity professionals, MBEs and council leadership – stand upon his shoulders as we, together, continue to drive SCMSDC’s mission of economic equality forward. ________
Remembering Hollis Smith a Supplier Diversity Icon As one of the first in his field, Hollis Smith passionately blazed a trail for others. As a champion for minority businesses, he was in a league of his own. Smith, who passed away November 6th at the age of 85, was a leading voice for economic equality for nearly three decades. He was the founder and president of what is now the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council (SCMSDC), the region’s preeminent corporate membership organization committed to supplier diversity inclusion and the success of minority businesses. His substantial influence also extended beyond the region through his service on the executive committee and board of directors of the National Minority Supplier Development Council. In 2009, Smith was celebrated for his accomplishments by being inducted into the Minority Business Hall of Fame & Museum, an organization whose mission is to preserve and recognize the contributions of individuals and institutions that have enabled the growth of minority businesses globally. He was further honored in 2016 when SCMSDC established the Hollis Smith Legacy Award to publicly recognize supplier diversity professionals whose unwavering support embodies Smith’s dedication to SCMSDC’s mission.

"Aba Women’s Riot, the Women who went to War. We Remember.''
I
’m sure 90% of Africans, Nigerians and mainly people of Igbo origin who read the headline of this post will be like who the hell are these people? Yes we wouldn’t know them. On this day 89 years ago, in the morning of November 18, 1929, a man called Emereuwa upon the directive of his boss Okugo the Warrant Chief, walked into the compound of a widow called Nwanyereuwa, ordered her for a census of all her livestock and household. The widow Nwanyereuwa knowing the census will determined how much she will be taxed by the British colonial government, embittered, shouted on Emereuwa “was your widowed mother at home counted?” An angry exchange ensued. Nwanyereuwa resentfully rushed down to the town and market square, consulted other disgruntled women, They with palm fronds quickly mobilised other women. And that marked the beginning of one of the greatest resistance, rebellion and uprising the British imperial colonial rule
ever faced in Nigeria NG and Africa in general, called “#The_Aba_Womens_Riot” otherwise known as “#The_women_who_went_to_war.” While the men were subdued, while the man died in the face of oppression and tyranny of colonialism. The women stepped up and in. Record has it that over ten thousand women were involved in this revolt, and about 50 women lost their lives in the war/riot. This resistance was orchestrated by: 1) Persuasive #Ikonnia 2) Intelligent #Nwannedia 3) Passionate #Nwugo and 4) Wise, Counselling and strategic #Nwanyereuwa. These were the women that led the Famous #Aba_ Womens_Riot. Women from across Six ethnic groups were involved, the Igbos, Ibibio, Andoni, Ogoni, Bonny and Opobo. Hundreds of British colonial courts were burnt down and destroyed, hundreds of warrant chiefs were

International ostracised and banished. On the aftermath of the revolt, the British were forced to abandon the proposed plans to impose tax on the market women, powers of the warrant chiefs were considerably curbed and more robust room was created for women’s inclusiveness in the grand scheme of things. The Aba women’s riot was on the scale never seen before. It prompted, encouraged and inspired subsequent agitations like: 1) The Tax protest of 1938 2) The Owerri & Calabar oil mill protest of the 1940s 3) The Onitsha Aba Tax revolt of 1956 Then consequently the Nigeria NG independence in 1960. But unfortunately sad, when you drive through Aba today, you will see Faulks road, in Owerri you will see Wetheral Road and Douglas road all of them are
government buildings and and schools named after strangers, monuments raised for people of little or no importance to our history and future. But the real heroes, heroins and legends have been relegated to obscurity, sent to oblivion in a complete sheer and crass negligence. I hope that one day, the Igbos, Ibibios, Andonis, Ogonis, Opobos and Bonnis will have a leadership that will remember these women, the fifty that lost their lives and all that paid the ultimate price, immortalise them. I hope one day I shall see Nwanyereuwa road, Ikonnia hospital, Nwannedia secondary school and Nwugo shopping plaza. I hope to see us name our children after these legendary women and mothers and tell them the story. Today 18th November 2018, I remember the women who didn’t only fight against an oppressive British

Tell the US Government that North Africa is Africa Too!
oin with and support the United Africa Organization’s campaign to petition the U.S. Department of State to include the whole African continent under its Bureau of African Affairs.
Why? The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, led by Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson, currently excludes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara from its agenda. Instead, the aforementioned countries are grouped with the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, together with Iran, Iraq, Israel and others. This artificial distinction between North Africa and the rest of Africa
negatively impacts US foreign policy relations throughout the entire continent of Africa. We unequivocally reject the argument that North African countries are outside the scope of African affairs. North Africa is geographically and historically part of the African continent, and all fifty-three (53) independent African states, including North African countries, are represented in the African Union (AU). It would be far more productive for the State Department to engage with the entire continent of Africa, including North Africa, under its Bureau of African Affairs. We are one Africa, from the Cape to Cairo, indivisible and bound together! Therefore, no square inch of African
land should be excluded from African affairs.

Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin's War on America and the Election of Donald Trump
Welcome to More.
by Michael Isikoff, David Corn
R
ussian Roulette is a story of political skullduggery unprecedented in American history. It weaves together tales of international intrigue, cyber espionage, and superpower rivalry. After U.S.-Russia relations soured, as Vladimir Putin moved to reassert Russian strength on the global stage, Moscow trained its best hackers and trolls on U.S. political targets and exploited WikiLeaks to disseminate information that could affect the 2016 election. The Russians were wildly successful and the great break-in of 2016 was no "third-rate burglary." It was far more sophisticated and sinister -- a brazen act of political espionage designed to interfere with American democracy. At the end of the day, Trump, the candidate who pursued business deals in Russia, won. And millions of Americans were left wondering, what the hell happened? This story of high-tech spying and multiple political feuds is told against the backdrop of Trump's strange relationship with Putin and the curious ties between members of his inner circle -- including Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn -- and Russia. Russian Roulette chronicles and explores this bizarre scandal, explains the stakes, and answers one of the biggest questions in American politics: How and why did a foreign government infiltrate the country's political process and gain influence in Washington?

obert “Bo” Chaney has found that there is a misconception that no one cares about our youth. As a result of his personal experiences as well as the interactions that he has had with today’s young people, he has a passion to reach as many young people as he can. Throughout his adult life, Bo has successfully mentored many young, underserved, minority males, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to navigate school and the workplace. Bo has spent numerous hours developing curriculum that is customized to meet the needs of underserved youth. Through his dedication, he's found ways to prepare young people for the workforce, through strategic lessons and connections which “uncover the unknown.” One way Bo has approached d his passion is to prepare young people through his series of books focused on grade school kids - The Adventures of Rob & Rocky. The books expose children to career options, life choices, and cultural differences. These books are written using “sight words”, words children should know by sight
at the end of their grade level. The series starts when Rob and Rocky walk to school and discuss what they want to be when they grow up. Through basic conversation, they talk about a variety of career options that have been overlooked for years such as Fireighter, Mailman nd more . Check out the first book in the

7 Cities Where You Can Find a Black Santa This Christmas By Natelegé Whaley
S
anta is normally portrayed in popular culture as an older pudgy white man with a white beard. But for decades, black families have searched for a black Santa to capture holiday memories. This tradition is long standing. As early as the 1940s, department stores in Harlem, New York City, and Chicago featured a black Santa Claus. In some cities, these jolly old men have become local celebrities because of their recurring role as St. Nick. But black Santas aren’t always expected or accepted. For instance, the Mall of America in Minneapolis chose its first black Santa, Larry Jefferson, for the holiday season to promote diversity in 2016. Some of the patrons were happy to welcome him, while there were also racist online commentators who complained that Santa should be white, attempting to ruin his moment. Regardless of what the haters say, when the Christmas holiday rolls around again, black Santas still remain booked, busy and sometimes hard to find. So here is the ultimate guide on where to find them around the country this Christmas.
New Orleans Fred Parker, aka the Seventh Ward Santa, has taken photos with generations of Black New Orleanians. See him at the Dennis Photofinish located at 1753 N Tonti St in New Orleans.
New York City The Macy’s at Herald Square in New York City has a black Santa available by request. He is not advertised and seems to be known only by word of mouth. In 2017, the Santas at Macy’s arrive on Nov. 24 and will be posted until Christmas Eve, according to the Macy’s website. Tip: This year you must set up an appointment to see Santa.
Atlanta In Atlanta, Dee Sinclair, also known as the “real black Santa” is a popular face who is available for booking at private events. His holiday schedule is already filling up. time where I can afford to pay the rent.” Now, with his own business, Warner says he wishes it were larger so he “could hire at least 10” former Toys ‘R’ Us employees. But, like many of them, the sudden job loss and lack of severance pay hit Warner hard, too. He still has car insurance bills, young children, and a $2,000 mortgage to care of. “It’s still a struggle for me, too,” Warner says. Even now, with the store open, the money he earns goes directly back into the store. “It’s still not easy,” Warner says. “I still have bills.” But he’s thrilled. Opening his own store is the cumulation of decades of experience — and surviving the tumultuous retail climate in the U.S. He first learned the tricks of the trade from a prominent businessman in Guyana who owned a number of restaurants and became like a second father to Warner. He listened to him conduct business over the phone; he learned the importance of saving money; he learned the necessity of making a sacrifice. Now, Warner is trying to build a loyal customer base. The store is brand new, and, while he says it serves an untapped market in the area, toys aren’t necessarily flying off the shelves. But he’s staying positive. “Some days, no one walks in, and some days, for three days, I have no one walk in,” Warner says. “But it doesn’t break me because I have encouragement and motivations to make it happen.” “It’s not all glory right now for me,” Warner adds. “But I’m happy to achieve the American Dream.” Toys, Babies & More is located at 7455 Annapolis Rd. in Hyattsville, MD. https://shoppeblack.us/2018/11/ manager-opens-toy-store/

Black-Owned Watch Brands You Should Make Your Brands MG Media, TBTNEWS
W
hile timepieces or watches are usually a luxury for most, there are several Blackowned brands that create and market high-quality watches that won't break the bank... and they are definitely worth taking time to look at! Here are seven Black-owned watch brands that you should support:
Youngblood Timepieces: Launched in 2006, this brand of high-end signature watches continues to be one of the most sought-after Black-owned watch brands. Its co-founders Paul Youngblood and Patrick Martin created the brand to offer both accessory and apparel products for savvy shoppers who sought to maximize their value without compromising on quality. https://youngbloodworldwide.com/collections/menswristwatches
Talley & Twine: Started with just a few sketches and no previous knowledge of the watch industry, Robert Williams designed his first watch that eventually became a successful luxury watch brand. Since then, they aimed to create quality, detailed, attention-grabbing timepieces that are reasonably priced and resist the status quo.
Seventeenth Watches: Owned and operated by an army veteran, Chris Johnson, who is also Black, this brand creates watches that are a perfect union between simplicity and class. Their styles are usually unisex and minimalist that makes it a timeless piece that would seem to still be in trend even in the next decades. www.seventeenth-watches.com/ Benson Watch: Established on the principle that "time should be spent doing what you love," its founder, Marcel Benson, wanted to encourage people to take charge of their time and live life on their terms. Additionally, this brand produces exclusive collection watches that are available for limited time only and will not be replicated anymore. https://www.bensonwatch.com/ SPGBK Watches: Founded by two African-American fraternity brothers from Fayetteville, North Carolina, this brand aims to create original culturally-inspired watches that are inspired by diversity and inclusion. The name is an abbreviation of "Springbreak" as the two founders, who were both HBCU graduates, wanted the company to be collegethemed. www.springbreakwatches.com/
https://store.talleyandtwine.com/
Enbois by Maxim: Named after the French word which means "wooden," this brand's watches are designed with the finest sustainable materials. Also, an acronym for Each New Bead Offers Its Support, its founder Maxim Thuriere sought a way to give back to his country of heritage, Haiti, where a portion of each transaction is donated to help improve educational opportunities as well as reforest Haiti.
Vitae London: Based in London, England, this brand features watches that are made of either a high-quality genuine leather band or a stainless steel mesh band with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that are stylish, elegant, and built to last. What's more, for every watch sold, the company supports an underprivileged child in South Africa through education. https://vitaelondon.com/

Parker House Sausage
(www.parkerhousesausage.com) was started by Chicago entrepreneur, Judge H. Parker who came to Chicago from Montgomery County, Tennessee with little more than the conviction that there was a potential market for homemade sausage products prepared according to his mother’s recipes. By 1919 Judge Parker began selling his unique blend of herbs and spices mixed with flavorful, savory sausage from a horse drawn cart on a retail basis. Recognized as one of the oldest family owned businesses in the U.S. In 2014 Parker House expanded its product line to include chicken products including breakfast sausage, hot links, and smoked sausage.

Eric Garner's Mother Seeks Justice after Losing Her Son
A
by Gwen Carr
fter the death of her son, Eric Garner, at the hands of New York City police officers on Staten Island went viral, Gwen Carr’s life changed forever. The illegal chokehold that took Garner’s life has been seared into the public consciousness forever as the large black man struggled to breathe while a white policeman held him down on a hot concrete sidewalk. His death set the tone for a new normal where young black men and women now automatically document p o l i c e interactions with their cell phones for fear of brutality and even death. As one of the Mothers of the Movement, Gwen Carr, a retired transit train operator, now dedicates her time to fighting for racial equality, especially the way law enforcement treats blacks in the United States. In This Stops Today, Carr shares the tragedies she’s faced, recalls her son’s life and death, and recounts her newfound role as an activist in the fight for racial equality. More than the story of a single moment, her book recounts a life of family, community, and of a woman who now speaks for those who no longer can. She has to do it for her firstborn. She has to do it for Eric. www.amazon.com/dp/B07FX8L3VM/ref=dp-kindle-

Becoming
I
by Michelle Obama
n a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families p u r s u e healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily
