California Law Demands Inclusion of Women On All Boards By Ludmila Leiva

I

t’s no secret that boardrooms have long been maledominated spaces, but California state legislature is trying to address this problem. As of Sunday, September 30th, California has enacted a new law requiring publicly traded corporate firms with "principal executive offices" headquartered in the state to have at least one woman on their board of directors by the end of 2019 (www.

reuters.com/article/us-californiaboard-women/california-state-lawmandates-female-board-directors-by2019-idUSKCN1MB172). The law

also requires companies with five directors to add two women, and those with six or more to add at least three women, by the close of 2021. What’s more, companies that fail to comply with the new law within the allotted time will run the risk of penalties up to $300,000. The bill passed in both the state's House and the Senate last month after being introduced by two women state senators, both Democrats, Senator HannahBeth Jackson and Senator Toni Atkins. “Yet another glass ceiling is shattered, and women will finally have a seat at the table in corporate boardrooms,” said Sen. Jackson on Twitter. “Corporations will be more profitable. This is a giant step forward for women, our businesses and our economy.” The measure, signed by Governor Jerry Brown, is the first of its kind in the U.S. And, though similar laws have been passed in

Democrats Draft an ‘Internet Bill of Rights’ to Regulate Big Tech By Monica Nickelsburg

D

emocrats in the House of Representatives are promising to push for federal regulation of tech companies if they retake the House in November. Rep. Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley, has drafted an Internet Bill of Rights and shared it with influential tech journalist Kara Swisher. It includes liberties like the right to access and transport personal data collected about you, an opt-in framework for data collection, and net neutrality protections. Rep. Nancy Pelosi charged Khanna with drafting the principles, according to an essay by Swisher published in the New York Times. The list includes the right to obtain, correct, or delete personal data “where context appropriate and with a fair process.” That’s not nearly as sweeping as the “right to be forgotten” included in Europe’s landmark General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect earlier this year. The Bill of Rights would also require companies that collect

personal data to notify users of breaches in “a timely manner” and mandate “reasonable business practices and accountability to protect your privacy.” Swisher calls it “an admirable list” but is concerned that codifying the principles “will be like pushing back the ocean.” Many big tech companies have business models built entirely on collecting as much user data as possible. Still, lawmakers are waking up to the fact that allowing tech to operate in a widely unregulated space has serious drawbacks. A number of high-profile data breaches and other controversies have led to a watershed moment for the tech industry. In September, Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Google, Twitter, and

Charter sent representatives to Washington, D.C. to testify before a Senate committee on privacy. It followed previous hearings with executives from Twitter and Facebook. “The question is no longer whether we need a federal law to protect consumers privacy,” said Sen. John Thune during the privacy hearing. “The question is what shape will that law take?”  www.geekwire.com/2018/democratsdraft-internet-bill-rights-regulate-bigtech/

USTDA Announces Highest Return on Investment in Agency’s History ustdaupdate@ustda.gov

T

he U.S. Trade and Development Agency (www.ustda.gov) recently announced its largest return on investment since the Agency was created by the Jobs Through Exports Act of 1992. USTDA identified $4.9 billion in U.S. exports to emerging markets this past year. As a result, during the most recent 10-year evaluation period, USTDA identified over $104 in exports that directly supports U.S. jobs for every $1 invested by the Agency in its activities, far surpassing all previous results. USTDA’s continued success comes from data driven decision making to focus funding in emerging markets in order to create partnerships between U.S. companies and foreign infrastructure project developers. USTDA’s programming directly advances President Trump’s priority of supporting U.S. job growth through the opening of markets for increased exports of U.S.manufactured goods and services. “USTDA’s unprecedented results

demonstrate the effectiveness of the Agency’s programming and how these results are advancing the Administration’s priorities to create U.S. jobs,” said Thomas R. Hardy, Acting Director of USTDA. “We will continue to identify the areas where USTDA’s funding will be most effective to demonstrate U.S. expertise and support project preparation for infrastructure projects overseas.” As the U.S. government’s project preparation agency, USTDA supports a diverse portfolio across the energy, telecommunications

and transportation sectors. The Agency continues to commit resources toward the U.S. Gas Infrastructure Exports Initiative, the Global Freight Rail Initiative, and Power Africa. Many of these projects include cutting-edge solutions supplied by small U.S. businesses. Through USTDA’s programs, American businesses gain market access overseas while foreign buyers are introduced to quality U.S. solutions that can advance their infrastructure development goals. 

T

he U.S. Trade and Development Agency awarded a $1.15 million grant to Globeleq Zambia Wind Limited (Globeleq) for a feasibility study for an estimated 100-megawatt wind power plant in the Muchinga Province of Zambia. The study will be carried out by U.S. engineering firm, DNV GL Energy USA, Inc. of Katy, TX, with Globeleq providing financial, development and project management planning services. As Zambia’s energy generation has historically been dominated by hydropower, the Government is looking to diversify and incorporate other resources, including wind energy. This approach will better protect the energy sector from the effects of climate change. The project is anticipated to include 40 wind turbine generators connected to the national grid by a single-circuit overhead transmission line. The study will support Globeleq in finalizing the technical analysis needed for the project to seek financing, such as a wind energy assessment, as well as finalizing the design of the plant and

equipment needed for construction. “USTDA is pleased to support this study that will diversify Zambia’s energy mix,” said Thomas R. Hardy, USTDA’s Director for Congressional and Public Affairs. “At the same time, this project will also lead to new opportunities for innovative U.S. companies in a growing sector in Zambia.” “We look forward to working with USTDA and having their critical support,” said Paul Hanrahan, Globeleq’s CEO. “This is a positive step forward for the project, demonstrating Globeleq’s continued commitment to Zambia and the Government’s renewable energy initiatives.” Marion Hill, Director, Renewable Advisory Services for DNV GL added, “We are pleased to be working with Globeleq and USTDA in Zambia, to advance wind power plant development, enable renewable energy, and, ultimately, provide greater energy security to Zambians.”

This project supports the goals of Power Africa and the Electrify Africa Act (www.govtrack.us/congress/ bills/114/s2152) which aim to increase capacity as well as support private sector involvement in Africa’s energy sector.

About USTDA The U.S. Trade and Development Agency helps companies create U.S. jobs through the export of U.S. goods and services for priority development projects in emerging economies. USTDA links U.S.

businesses to export opportunities by funding project preparation and partnership building activities that develop sustainable infrastructure and foster economic growth in partner countries. 

Senator Harris Rolls out Bill to Create new Middle Class Tax Credit By Naomi Jagoda

Senator Kamala Harris © Jae C. Hong/AP Photo

S

enator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) rolled out a proposal to create a new refundable tax credit for low- and middle-income individuals and families. "Americans are working harder than ever but stagnant wages mean they can't keep up with cost of living increases," Harris said in a news release. "We should put money back into the pockets of American families to address rising costs of childcare, housing, tuition, and other expenses. Our tax code should reflect our values and instead of more tax breaks for the top 1% and corporations, we should be lifting up millions of American families." Under Harris's bill, families would receive a tax credit of up to $6,000. Families making up to $100,000

annually would be eligible for the credit, with the credit amount phasing out as a taxpayers' income increases. Taxpayers could receive the credit either at the end of a year or in monthly installments over the course of a year. The bill would also increase funding for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which helps low-income taxpayers prepare their tax returns. Harris envisions paying for the bill by repealing parts of President Trump's tax-cut law that don't provide relief for taxpayers making under $100,000, and by imposing fees on financial institutions with assets of more than $50 billion. The rollout of the bill comes days before Harris is set to visit Iowa, home of the first-in-thenation presidential caucuses.

Harris, who is often floated as a possible presidential candidate, is expected to use her time in Iowa to boost candidates for Congress and state offices ahead of the midterm elections. She is also slated to visit South Carolina and Wisconsin in the coming days. This isn't the first bill proposal from Harris in recent months to call for a new tax credit to help people deal with rising costs of living. Over the summer, she offered legislation that would create a tax credit for people who pay more than 30 percent of their income in rent and utilities. Harris is one of a number of Democrats who have expressed interest in undoing parts of the tax law to pay for programs that would help lower- and middle-income taxpayers. Senate Democrats have also proposed rolling back parts of the law to pay for new infrastructure investments. "Americans want a tax system that's fair, and they're tired of seeing benefits go to the wealthy and corporations while everyone else struggles to get ahead. We need real action to provide financial relief to the working and middle-class, which is exactly what [Harris's] bill does," said Natalie Foster, co-chair of the Economic Security Project, which has similarly proposed a tax credit for working families.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/ politics/harris-rolls-out-bill-to-createnew-middle-class-tax-credit/arBBOyFcc?ocid=spartandhp

uthorities evacuated a postal facility in South Los Angeles after workers found a suspicious package addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), law enforcement sources said. The Los Angeles Police Department and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene investigating the package. Officials deployed a robot to examine the package, the sources said. The LAPD received a call about a suspicious package at 2 p.m. at the Los Angeles Central Mail facility in the 7000 block of South Central Avenue, authorities said. “We are working closely with our federal law enforcement partners given the number of suspicious devices discovered across the nation,” the department said in a tweet. Packages containing makeshift

pipe bombs and addressed to highprofile political targets, including President Obama and Hillary Clinton, set off a wave of panic. Waters also had a suspicious package destined for her Washington office that was intercepted at a Maryland mail facility. Officials are unsure if that package is related to the other cases. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/package-

imone Biles just did something no other woman has done before, a Deadspin (https:// deadspin.com/simone-biles-unveils-new-vaultno-woman-has-ever-done-b-1829710366) article reported, the Olympic gymnast competed at the selection camp for the upcoming world championships, which will take place in Doha, Qatar. When it was her turn, Biles performed a vault that the site described as the Cheng vault (a "roundoff onto the board and half turn onto the table…with only one and a half twists off") with an extra half twist. According to Deadspin, this variation on the Cheng vault has only ever been successfully performed in competition by male gymnasts, which means Biles just broke an incredible record. Previously, Deadspin reported that the enhanced vault will be dubbed the "Biles" if she ends up performing it at the world championships. And it looks like she'll be performing the move again later this month, because on Friday ESPN reported that the four-time gold medalist was announced to be headlining the team, which will be competing on behalf of Team USA in Doha. According to ESPN, Biles' teammates will include Morgan Hurd, Ragan Smith, Riley McCusker, Grace McCallum, and Kara Eaker. Hurd is a 2017 world allaround champion; Smith is a 2017 U.S. champion.

Then, this past August she became the second woman ever to win five U.S. all-around titles, as well as the first one in 24 years to win gold in all four apparatus titles.  www.glamour.com/story/simone-biles-sets-record-chengvault

A.I. and robotics will create almost 60 million more jobs than they destroy by 2022 By Saheli Roy Choudhury kiadvanyok/assets/pdf/impact_of_automation_on_jobs. pdf). It said that AI, robotics and other forms of "smart

achines will overtake humans in terms of performing more tasks at the workplace by 2025 — but there could still be 58 million net new jobs created in the next five years, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said in a report on Monday. Developments in automation technologies and artificial intelligence could see 75 million jobs displaced, according to the WEF report "The Future of Jobs 2018." (http://reports.weforum.org/future-of-jobs-2018) However, another 133 million new roles may emerge as companies shake up their division of labor between humans and machines, translating to 58 million net new jobs being created by 2022, it said. At the same time, there would be "significant shifts" in the quality, location and format of new roles, according to the WEF report, which suggested that full-time, permanent employment may potentially fall. Some companies could choose to use temporary workers, freelancers and specialist contractors, while others may automate many of the tasks. New skill sets for employees will be needed as labor between machines and humans continue to evolve, the report pointed out. Machines are expected to perform about 42% of all current tasks in the workplace by 2022, compared to only 29% now, according to firms surveyed by WEF. Humans are expected to work an average of 58% of task hours by 2022, up from the current task hours of 71%. Artificial intelligence and its impact on jobs has become a hot topic of debate and many experts have predicted that machines will ultimately replace millions of jobs in the next decade. Still, the conventional wisdom among many business executives is that AI will also create new jobs. An analysis from global audit firm PwC also made similar predictions (https://www.pwc.com/hu/hu/

automation" technologies could boost productivity and create better products and services. While some jobs will be displaced or "fundamentally changed in nature," new jobs will also be created and the long term net effect should be positive for the economy as a whole. The WEF report was based on a survey of human resources officers, strategy executives and CEOs from more than 300 global companies in a wide range of industries. Respondents represented more than 15 million employees and 20 developed and emerging economies that collectively represent some 70% of the global economy. The outlook for job creation remains positive even though nearly half of all companies expect their fulltime workforce to shrink over the next several years, the WEF report. That is due to the fact that firms now have a better understa nding of how technology creates new business opportunities. While automation could give companies a productivity boost, they need to invest in their employees in order to stay competitive, according to Saadia Zahidi, head of the Centre for the New Economy and Society at the World Economic Forum. "There is both a moral and economic imperative to do so," Zahidi said in a statement. "Without proactive approaches, businesses and workers may lose out on the economic potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution." The Fourth Industrial Revolution basically refers to the ways new technologies will alter the way people live, work and relate to one another. Companies, governments and employees need to work together to tackle skills shortages that occur due to automation, according to WEF. Ultimately, if companies can effectively manage upgrading the skills of existing workers and splitting tasks between employees and machines, they would create the opportunity for higher productivity growth, the WEF said.  hwww.cnbc.com/2018/09/17/wef-machines-are-going-to-performmore-tasks-than-humans-by-2025.html View Video: www.cnbc.com/video/2016/01/20/what-is-the-fourthindustrial-revolution.html

How to Keep Your Data Safe While Traveling By Sebastian Modak

T

his year, the World Economic Forum ranked cyberattacks as the third greatest global threat—right after extreme weather and natural disasters. So do you need to hide yourself in a concrete bunker, encrypting every message you send and shattering burner after burner every month? No. Travel often and travel freely, but follow some of these easy tips to keep your data as safe as possible. None are major inconveniences, and it will be worth it to know that your banking information, your emails, and your files stored in the cloud are safe and sound.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is

"password123."

Public Wi-Fi networks are basically "Steal my stuff" invitations

It can be hard to resist: You've been living in airplane mode for the past three days, terrified of roaming charges, and then you see an open WiFi network pop-up. What you might not realize is that public Wi-Fi networks—the ones you can connect to instantaneously in libraries, hotels, airports, or even some city centers—are unencrypted, which means with even the slightest grasp on hacking, anyone can see what websites you're looking at, what you're typing into web fields, and any other data you are transmitting over the connection. (Yes, even your banking information.) Symantec, the company that makes the Norton Security suite of antivirus products, released a report in 2017 that showed that 87% of respondents had at some point potentially put information at risk while using public Wi-Fi.

What to do about it:

Shady emails are always dangerous, but we sometimes let down our guard when we're jet-lagged or desperately trying to get to inbox zero while waiting for a flight. A rule of thumb to follow, no matter where you are: Don't reply to any email that looks even remotely fishy... er...phishy. The same goes for websites. If Netflix or HBO Now isn't available in the country you are visiting, our condolences—but maybe it's time to take a break from Peaky Blinders. Don't resort to some pop-upcrazy site with free streaming links. If it looks sketchy, it probably is.

• Avoid public Wi-Fi networks when you can. Even if you think you're somewhere safe, like your hotel lobby, it's not worth the risk. You don't know who else is in that lobby, and you don't even know whether the network you're connecting to is legit— after all, it's not hard for a hacker to create a hotspot with the name "Hotel Free Wi-Fi."

Protect your devices

• Use a VPN (virtual private network). Think of a virtual private network as a tunnel that encrypts all your data as it passes through and scrambles your location (by changing your IP address), even if you are connected to the internet through a public network. No one, not even the internet service provider, will know what you're sending across the network. There are literally hundreds of VPN services available for free or a small monthly fee (Wired has a good run-down of some of the best - www.wired.com/2017/03/want-use-vpn-protect-privacystart), but the most important thing to do is make sure the one you choose has a no-log rule—that is, they don't keep records of your use and traffic—and read the privacy terms to make sure they are ironclad.

If you can, leave the devices you really love at home. Invest in an unlocked burner phone you can use when you're traveling with local SIM cards that are easy and cheap to get in most countries. If you absolutely need to bring a laptop with you when you travel, consider buying a sub-$500 Chromebook (we love the Asus Flip C302) that can be your go-to travel computer; with Chromebooks, there is the extra bonus that everything is stored on Google's cloud, so if it the laptop gets jacked, you won't lose everything. (While no storage solution, including the cloud, is 100% hackproof, password-protected cloud storage is actually a lot safer than local storage, which can be physically stolen, damaged, or corrupted.) If you're bringing your business laptop or your go-to home device on a trip, make sure everything is backed up in the cloud and on an external hard drive before you leave, and ensure the device is secured with a password that isn't

• If you absolutely have to connect to one, don't do anything sensitive. If you really need to check that basketball score for a quick second, then you'll probably be okay. But don't do any banking or company business while connected.

• HTTPS is your friend—HTTP is not. If a website starts with "https" it means it's encrypted, making your browsing more secure. If it's missing that "s"—

As it turns out, the Adwin DDE attack vector also requires users to click through not one, but three different warning dialogue boxes in Microsoft Office, advising users not to click, before being infected. "Sadly, users often ignore warnings," Paul Rascagneres, Security Researcher, at Cisco Talos, told eWEEK. The Adwind RAT has been active for several years, with the new method being detected in the Adwind 3.0 version of the RAT. ReversingLabs first discovered the new Adwind campaign on Sept. 10. Craig Williams, Director of Outreach, at Cisco

To be safe, install HTTPS Everywhere as an extension into your browser: it automatically switches sites from the door-wide-open http to the far more secure https. • Rent a portable hotspot. Far more secure than public WiFi are portable hotspots, the

Talos told eWEEK that Cisco and ReversingLabs are intelligence partners and both groups are part of the Cyber-Threat Alliance (CTA). Adwind is capable of attacking multiple desktop operating systems including Windows, macOS and Linux. While Adwind supports Linux and macOS, the new DDE attack vector only works on Windows. Rascagneres explained that Linux does not have Microsoft Office and while there is a version of Office for macOS, the DDE support does not exist. The new attack in Adwind 3.0 injects code via DDE and is not blocked by traditional anti-virus (AV) technology, though users do get a series of warning dialogues in Microsoft Office that requires them to click to continue. Once the full Adwind payload is on a victim's system, Rascagneres said that the e attacker has a full access to the machine, they are able to spy on the user, push and execute additional binaries. "The infected systems become part of the attacker botnet," he added. The attack peaked on Aug. 28 according to Cisco Talos, and

Rascagneres said that more than 200 unique malicious Office documents were identified. He added that Adwind is also known as jRATand has existed for years, often being sold in a malware-as-aservice model. "The source code is available and a lot of bad guys developed variants based on it," Rascagneres said. "We cannot do attribution based on this malware, it used by a lot of different persons."

pocket-sized devices you can rent. They give you a secured individual Wi-Fi connection around the world, so you can connect to the internet without using international data or open Wi-Fi networks. Skyroam (starting at $9 a day) and Roaming Man ($9.99 a day) are two good options; both give you 4G Wi-Fi access in more

than 120 countries around the world. Your connection will be password-secured, so you can even share it with your trustworthy travel companions. 

Defending Against Adwind Aside from heading warnings in Office about potentially risky operations, there is another simple thing that organization can do to defend against the new Adwind attack. "The easiest way to protect organization is to keep Office up to date," Rascagneres said. "At the beginning of the year, Microsoft pushed an update to disable DDE by default."  www.eweek.com/security/users-clickingthrough-warnings-leading-to-ratinfections?utm_medium=email&utm_ campaign=EWK_NL_EP_20181002_STR4 L2&dni=455673761&rni=25652266 Image Credit: bitnewsbot.com

Former WNBA Head Becomes First Time’s Up President and CEO By Mary McNamara

T

ime’s Up (www.timesupnow.com) has named Lisa Borders, former president of the Women’s National Basketball Assn., as its first president and CEO. The organization, established less than a year ago as a response to the sexual harassment scandals rocking the entertainment industry, has since broadened its scope to address larger issues of safety, equal pay and parity in a variety of fields. Borders, the group announced Tuesday morning, will oversee “an umbrella organization to reach all women, everywhere, linked to a series of affiliates and partners working to advocate for and create change in their respective industries.” “With Lisa’s skills and leadership, Time’s Up is now in the best position to achieve what we all started — to create a more positive future for workplace culture and a more powerful network for working women of all kinds,” co-founder Shonda Rhimes said in the group’s statement. Having raised $13 million during the months following

a cascade of sexual harassment scandals and the rise of #MeToo, Time’s Up initially set up a legal defense fund, administered by the National Women’s Law Center, to help women who have experienced sexual harassment. For this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, the group called on female attendees to wear black, creating a powerful image in a scandalplagued awards season. A-list women including Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon, Ava DuVernay, America Ferrera and Eva Longoria acted as de facto spokeswomen. The group has since made public statements calling for CBS to use any severance money it might have earmarked for ousted CEO Les Moonves to aid victims of sexual harassment and, more recently, for Brett Kavanaugh to withdraw his Supreme Court nomination. In July, urban planner Nithya Raman was named executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment. Borders, who has also served as vice president of global community affairs for the Coca-Cola Co. and chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation, will oversee the group’s entertainment branch as well as future initiatives in other industries. “To disrupt and reinvent the ingrained status quo, we will need all hands on deck to create and sustain enduring change,” Borders said in Tuesday’s statement. “I’m thrilled to lead TIME’S UP and I am convinced that together, we will shift the paradigm of workplace culture.”  https://tnj.com/former-wnba-head-becomes-first-times-uppresident-and-ceo/

How to Spread the Word About Your Business—Without Paying for Advertising By Jay Baer for Chase for Business (www.chase.com/digital/chase-for-business)

S

kip's Kitchen is a family-owned restaurant in Sacramento, California. It's constantly packed, and was recently named one of America's top hamburger restaurants. Yet, in the nine years they've been open, they haven't spent one dollar on advertising. How? Word of mouth. Skip's Kitchen is popular because its customers are compelled to tell other people about the restaurant. It's not because the food is good (although it is). And it's not because the service is good (although it is). It's because of their deck of cards. Once you place your order at the front counter and before you pay for your meal, the cashier whips out a deck of cards, fans them out face down, and asks you to "pick a card." If you pick a Joker, your entire meal is free! On average, about three people win each day at Skip's. And when they do, customers go wild. People take selfies with the joker. They post on social media. They call their mother. All the other patrons clap and cheer. The deck of cards gambit at Skip's Kitchen is what I call a "talk trigger"—that is, a way your business operates differently from others because you create customer conversation. Most small business owners believe that basic competency creates conversation and that being "a good business" equals word of mouth. If you want customers to tell others about your business, you must offer something different in addition to being excellent. The following are the five types of "talk triggers" that I've seen work effectively for businesses.

1. Talkable generosity In this style of "talk trigger," you give your customers a little something extra that creates memorable moments and word of mouth. Skip's free meals for those who pick a Joker is an example of talkable generosity.

2. Talkable usefulness Here, you can offer something for customers that is more useful than they anticipate, spurring them to tell others about the experience. One of the highest-rated locksmiths in New York City, for example, oils every

lock in every home me they visit, not just st the locks they work rk on.

3. Talkable empathy

"If you want customers to tell others about your business, you must be differ ent in addition to being excelle nt." Jay Baer

Being more human and empathetic than customers expect is another way to boost or conversation. For h calls ll each h new example, I know a surgeon who patient who is visiting his office for the first time that week, to ask if they have any question about their appointment. Such a simple, humanizing gesture!

4. Talkable responsiveness Speed matters. Customers tend to equate speed with caring. The faster you can respond and the more convenient you are, the more memorable you'll become.

5. Talkable attitude Some businesses create conversation just by being a little different. Perhaps my favorite example is a 56-year-old tiki bar in Montana that was named "#1 bar worth flying for" by GQ Magazine in 2003. Behind the bar is a giant swimming pool with glass sides. From 9 p.m. until midnight every night, they feature human mermaids (and on Tuesdays, mermen) swimming in the pool for all to witness. That's one way to get people talking. Word of mouth is the most cost effective way to grow your business, because when your current customers tell their friends, you get new customers at no additional cost. Think about ways to give your customers a story worth telling. Pick one or more of these five types of "talk triggers" to get started.  www.chase.com/news/081018-spread-your-business

Business - Taking A Stand Hoplamazian changed Hyatt’s policy toward such groups planning to meet at any of the hotel company’s nearly 800 properties worldwide in a memo to employees shortly thereafter. “If a group is primarily focused on disparaging a group by virtue of their identity…that’s really where we need to draw the line,” he stated. “We’re going to apply our values to making these decisions along the way.” Hoplamazian also stated that groups like ACT for America represent a fraction of the hotel company’s total business. “We’re going to apply our values to making these decisions along the way.” While giving nod to Hyatt’s decision to ban hate groups as a “welcome one for consumers who want their hotels to be safe spaces to relax and be themselves free from hostility and discrimination,” Muslim Advocates’ Public Advocacy Director Scott Simpson also said in his organization’s own release on the subject that “Hyatt didn’t make this decision in a vacuum. … We organized, we signed petitions and we called their offices to tell them that there should be no room for hate at Hyatt.” Hilton, Wyndham, Accor Hotels and InterContinental Hotels have all been in the news in recent months for giving the boot to hate groups in some marketbeat.com form or another, but it’s Airbnb, once considered a nemesis to the hotel industry, that first set the tone of inclusivity last year by canceling the accounts of attendees set to attend a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Where do we go from here? Simpson says, “Now it’s up to the other major chains to decide if they want to be resorts for racists.”

How to Be a Freelancer and Not End Up Homeless By Geoffrey James

F

reelancing isn't for everyone. If you're dying to start a real business--meaning one with employees, products, and investors and a big-money exit strategy, freelancing is going to seem second best. On the other hand, unlike businesses, freelancing has a very low startup cost, gives you maximum control over your life, has the same (or better) tax breaks, and is far less time-consuming than trying to be a full-on entrepreneur. Freelancing isn't the same as contracting. A contractor is an employee who doesn't get any benefits. If the company falters, you're the first to go. And most of the time it involves the hassle of being a regular employee (like commuting to an open-plan office--ugh.) Unlike contractors, freelancers have (or should have) multiple clients. They still don't get employee benefits, but they have far more control over their lives and who they work for than mere contractors. If one of your clients goes away, it isn't a huge disaster. Freelancing is the only job security that exists in today's world. And freelancers get to work from home. (If you have to commute to a workplace, you're a contractor, not a freelancer.) I've been freelancing for about two decades. Every year (except the first three), I've made at least twice my age--far more than I would have made in a regular day job. While I haven't gotten filthy rich, I've made enough to be comfortable. I've also been able to work from home and have had time to pursue many other interests. It's been sweet, actually. Even so, those first three years were pretty scary. Though I was eventually successful, I've known many people who have tried freelancing but couldn't hack it, even though they're smarter and more talented than

I am. Most of them failed in the first year; hence this post. Looked at one way, this is the best time in history to go freelance. The internet connects people, it opens up a myriad ways to market your services that weren't available even a decade ago. In addition, you can use the Web for online meetings, preparing invoices, accepting payments, and so forth, thereby greatly cutting down on paperwork and hassle. Seen another way, though, this is the worst time in history to go freelance. The huge online marketplace has created a price war where skills that once would have commanded big money are sold for, well, five dollars a pop. (See Fiverr.com) In this column, I'll explain how I became and have remained successful as a freelancer. It's advice I've given to others--clients mostly--but I've never really written about in detail. (I've covered pieces maybe, but not the entire process.) I could probably write a whole book on this subject, but I'll get to the gist:

Reduce expenditures to the bare minimum. When I first thought of writing this post, I considered making it the world's shortest post by simply writing "move into your parent's basement." That's obviously not always practical but the principle is valid: get those expenses down. Way down.

44  October 2018  Black Business News  www.blackbbusinessnews.net  1-323-291-7819

During the first year or two of freelancing, you're probably not going to make nearly as much money as you did when you worked for somebody else. (The one exception to that is if your current employer becomes your first client... but then you're really just a contractor.) If you're serious about freelancing, you'll likely experience negative cash flow, so you'd best ensure the negative is as small as possible. Go through every expense and figure out how to reduce it. Cut back on your phone service and usage. Buy in bulk the stuff you consume regularly. Use the public library and any other free services in your

community. Sell the fancy car and get a "transportation vehicle." Once you're successful, you can go back to the luxuries, if you want. For now, though, you won't become successful if you can't survive the first couple of years... and if you're hemorrhaging money you'll likely be too distracted to function effectively.

Accumulate a financial cushion. Since your income will be temporarily lower, you'll want some cushion. Fortunately, unlike starting a business, going freelance doesn't require you to spend all your money and credit just to get up and running.

Needless to say, reducing expenditures helps you accumulate your cushion. In my case, I put aside about six months of living expenses. I also banked my vacation days and negotiated for a severance, which came out to 13 weeks of income at my day-job level on the day I quit. Freelancers get a lot of cool tax breaks. What's more, you're allowed to lose money two years out of five (I think), which means you can probably get your taxes down to pretty much zip for the first two years.

List all the ways you can make money. One of the biggest obstacles to being successful at freelancing is worrying whether you can make enough money to survive. That's especially true if you're accustomed to a regular paycheck. I found it useful and encouraging to write down all the different ways I could make money, both inside and outside of my field. For example, I owned a fair amount of valuable books that I really didn't want; I knew I could sell them if I had to. (I eventually did for a cool $4,000.) During this process, it also occurred to me that I could get a roommate, since (being recently divorced) I had a lot of extra space in the house where I was living. I immediately advertised and got a roommate, which provided a little extra income for the next four years or so. One warning: when you're thinking of ways to make money, the one idea you MUST not entertain is going back to work for somebody else. This will be a major temptation because as soon as you go freelance (intentionally and 100% committed to be successful

45  October 2018  Black Business News  www.blackbbusinessnews.net  1-323-291-7819

see page 46

from page 45 at it) suddenly everybody wants to hire you full-time. I'd say about a third of freelancers fail because they accepted a job.

Define how you're unique. As I mentioned above, the internet tends to turn freelancers into commodities. That's why I recommend you avoid sites like Fiverr and Upwork. Ideally, you want to position yourself as something so unique that it wouldn't fit within those sites' structure, and then market yourself directly. For example, if I were launching myself as a freelance writer of marketing copy, I would limit myself to a specific industry and describe myself as the only person who specializes in writing marketing copy for that industry. The last thing I'd do is offer my services in concert with a hundred other freelancers and end up taking the lowest amount.

Get yourself totally pumped. Regular workplaces have many incentives: the regular paycheck, peer pressure, comradery, bossfear, etc. Well, guess what? When you're freelancing, there's none of that, and so you will need to become 100 percent self-motivated. This is, in fact, probably the hardest part in the beginning, especially if you're not used to being alone for long periods of time. When I was in early days, I got into Tony Robbins, but he's not everyone's cup of tea. Regardless of what self-motivation method you use, make it an everyday thing. The more regularly you "pump yourself up," the more it builds your emotional muscle and momentum. Take this stuff seriously because without it, you will fail.

Quit your day job.

You've laid the groundwork, now just do it.

Market yourself full-time (at first). Being a freelancer means doing your own marketing. Don't bother complaining about it. Marketing and sales aren't not just part of the job -- in the beginning, they're 100 percent of the job. As you build your practice, you'll spend less time marketing and more time doing work for clients. Eventually, your clients will bring in repeat business or refer you to new clients. Also, you'll get so good at marketing that you can spend a lot less time doing it. Here's a map of the workload for a successful freelancer: Spending 100% of your time marketing means exactly that. For the first few months, you should be spending 6-8 hours a day marketing yourself--social media, networking, calling old contacts, writing proposals, honing your sales skills, etc. If you're thinking "but I don't want to market and sell my service," don't bother trying to freelance, because you'll fail. Freelancers need customers, and the only way to get customers is to market and sell your services. Don't know where to start? Buy some books and read them. I've posted plenty of recommendations in this column over the years. Anyway, if you follow the process defined above, you'll probably end up as a successful freelancer. It worked for me, and it's worked for some of the people who've hired me to coach them. Before I go, here's some trivia. The word "freelancer" refers to medieval knights (i.e., lancers) who were "free" of the feudal obligation to serve an overlord and therefore got paid to fight.  www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/how-to-be-a-freelancer-notend-up-homeless.html

Technology:

Take A Look! Trying to Fix the Broken Web

T

im Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist credited with inventing the web in 1989, announced a new project that he hopes will radically change his creation, by giving people full control over their data. The open-source software is called Solid (https://solid. inrupt.com). It allows developers to create decentralized apps that run on data that its users fully own. If Solid becomes widely adopted, then all your apps could talk to each other using the same set of data, which you and only you control. A screenshot from Fast Company showing one app that Berners-Lee built on Solid is “like a mashup of Google Drive, Microsoft Outlook, Slack, Spotify, and WhatsApp,” writes Katrina Brooker.

Berners-Lee also announced the launch of a company called Inrupt (https://solid.inrupt.com), an obvious gesture to the Silicon Valley cliché “disrupt,” but which sounds a bit closer to “erupt.” Its goal is “to provide commercial energy and an ecosystem to help protect the integrity and quality of the new web built on Solid,” writes Berners-Lee—which is to say, it will be a company that provides resources to the theoretically free innovation happening over at Solid. The new project is a clear rebuke of the tech giants whose opaque use of personal data is core to their businesses. Facebook’s notorious grip follows people around the web, even if they’ve signed out or have actually deleted their accounts, and Google’s Android phones track people’s movements, far beyond just their coordinates. Indeed, Berners-Lee’s antipathy to centralized tech control goes way back. In 1998 he said, “The decision to make the Web an open system was necessary for it to be universal. You can’t propose that something be a universal space and at the same time keep control of it.” 

Waze - Build a Carpool for Your Employees

W

aze Carpool has widely rolled out today as a new ride sharing solution from the popular Googleowned navigation app. After first becoming available in California last year, it is now live in all 50 states. The company notes that almost 250 million cars are projected to be on US roads in under two years and

believes Waze Carpool will help “reverse this negative trend by encouraging drivers to fill the empty seats and ultimately take cars off the road.” Waze has already teamed up with cities, transit agencies, businesses, and more to promote the new ride sharing option. Notably, Waze Carpool will be an option at 50 Amazon Fulfillment Centers across the country. Here’s how Waze Carpool works: Choose your fellow carpoolers: Riders or drivers choose their carpool buddies based on profiles, star ratings, number of mutual friends, and customizable filters such as gender, coworker or classmate, and proximity to preferred route. Optimized routes: Using Waze real-time traffic updates and industry-first HOV routing, riders and drivers enjoy the fastest route, every time. Reduced commute costs: With all payments handled securely through the app, riders pay for an affordable ride while drivers get reimbursed for gas. Scheduling rides up to seven days in advance: This makes planning the week’s commute easier than ever. Carpool Groups: Set up customizable groups of people you know and trust, making it easy to connect with your friends (and their friends!) to arrange carpools. Check out the new Waze Carpool website for more details (www.waze.com/carpool). Waze Carpool for riders and Waze for drivers on iOS are free downloads from the App Store.  Image Credit: gpsworld.com Curatted by LaSandra Stratton, Chief Content Administrator of the Black Business News.

Facebook Hacked, 50 Million Users Affected

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM).

By Lorenzo FranceschiBicchierai and Jason Koebler

F

acebook disclosed that hackers recently stole data from 50 million people. In a blog post (https://newsroom.fb.com/ Facebook’s news/2018/09/security-update), vice president of product management Guy Rosen said that the company’s engineering team “discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts.” “It’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As,” a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else,” Rosen wrote. “This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts.” "The vulnerability itself was the result of three distinct bugs and was introduced in July 2017," Rosen told reporters in a press call. "It’s important to say—the attackers could use the account as if they were the account holder." The vulnerability exploited by the hackers is fixed and Facebook is working with the FBI, Rosen said on the call. Facebook has a total of roughly 2 billion users, so the breach impacted approximately 2.5% of Facebook users. "We patched the issue last night and are taking precautionary measures for those who might have been affected," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a call with reporters. Zuckerberg said that the company's initial investigation has not indicated that the hackers were able to access private messages, change any information, or post to accounts. He said the hackers "did try to query our APIs—name, gender, hometown, etc. we do not yet know if any private information was accessed this way." The company is also resetting the access tokens of another 40 million people. “As a result, around 90 million people will now have to log back in to Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook Login,” Rosen wrote. The company is still investigating the incident. Rosen wrote that it doesn’t know who’s behind it nor

where they are from. If you were one of the around 50 million victims, or the other 40 million users potentially affected, you should’ve been forced to log in again. Zuckerberg says that those who have been affected will get a notification at the top of their news feed. "This is a really serious security issue, and we’re taking it very seriously," Zuckerberg said. "We have a major security effort at the company that hardens all our surfaces and investigates issues like this. I’m glad that we found this and we were able to fix the vulnerability and secure the accounts. It definitely is an issue that this happened in the first place. This underscores the attacks that our platform and community face." Facebook is already facing widespread criticism for how it handles users' data—CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified in front of several Congressional committees about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which third parties were found to be scraping Facebook data and using it to target ads. Thursday, September 27th, Gizmodo reported that Facebook has also been allowing advertisers to target users based on phone numbers that users gave the company for security purposes. In August, Facebook's Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos left the company. At the time, Facebook announced that the company has no plans to replace him.  https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/mbw3zb/ facebook-hacked-50-million-users-affected Image credit: i1.wp.com

A Tiny Phone...for Your Phone By Sean Michael Kerner

I

f you don't remember the PalmPilot, the personal digital assistant (PDA) unveiled in 1997 became a must-have for the tech-obsessed crowd, and paved the way for the full-screen smartphones and virtual assistants we rely on today—all before Palm, Inc. faded in 2011. Well, it's back...sort of. Having acquired licensing rights to the dormant Palm brand, a pair of entrepreneurs unveiled the new Palm, an elegant and sleek credit

clutchpoints.com

card-sized phone that works with your main phone to help you spend less time on your phone. ... "Um, what?" you ask? Hear us out: It's actually kind of cool and could be the travel-friendly device we've been waiting for. To understand what Palm is, you first need to understand what it's not: namely, a baby phone that will replace your gargantuan iPhone XS Max. The Palm is meant to be a companion to your main phone, an on-the-go tool that allows you to leave that digital lifeline at home while you work out or at the

Airbnb while you explore a new city, but still stay connected to the outside world. It's the Zodiac to your cruise ship, the escape pod to your Star Destroyer. Its appeal, therefore, is in its simplicity. It has a full data connection with the same phone number as your primary device, enabled using Verizon NumberShare (the Palm is being launched exclusively through Verizon), and it functions on Android. (It will also work with an iPhone, but not as seamlessly since it depends on Play Store apps.) But its 3.3-inch screen—and therefore tiny app icons and tiny keyboard—makes it hard to write fullon work emails or an epic Twitter thread, and that's the point. Think of it as a smart watch with a few more capabilities. (Ever try making a phone call on a watch? Not fun and you look very dumb doing it.) It can track your workouts and is made of sturdy Gorilla Glass while also being water- and dust-resistant; it can also basically do everything your main phone can, too. It notably has cameras—a 12-megapixel lens on the rear and an 8-megapixel front-facing selfie cam—both good enough to keep up with Instagram. An easy-to-use Android interface allows you to load up the apps you really need and access them when you actually need them. The real push here is on "Life Mode," both a device function and

a company ethos, according to Palm's founders, Dennis Miloseski and Howard Nuk. Life Mode is basically "Do Not Disturb" on steroids. When Life Mode is enabled, not only will the Palm go dark, but it will also shut off any signal until you unlock it (using a facial recognition unlocking system, similar to the latest generation of smart phones). The exact settings of Life Mode are customizable, but the idea is that you can shut off notifications for every Slack message, work email, and text that comes through, and you won't even see what you've missed until you decide to unlock the Palm and reenter the digital world. In press materials for the Palm— and in a briefing from Miloseski and Nuk last week—the device has been put forward as the kind of thing you could keep in your gym bag (Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is an investor and the "creative strategy director" of the company), mount on your bicycle for a workout, or use during nights out so you can hang out with your friends instead of glancing at your phone every five minutes. But the utility for travelers is actually huge. With the Palm, you could ostensibly leave the oversized, $1,000 phone in your hotel room safe and slip the Palm into your shirt pocket for a day out in Vienna. You'd have what you need a swipe away—Google Maps, CNTraveler.com—but you could actually spend more time in the present and less time staring at Instagram or mindlessly refreshing your email. Put it into Life Mode and the battery also gets extended beyond the regular eight hours, a huge boost when you're on the road and can't easily plug in.  www.cntraveler.com/story/palm-is-back-with-a-tiny-phone-foryour-phone?mbid=nl_101618Daily&CNDID=38890654&se condary_link=0&utm_source=nl&utm_medium=email&utm_ brand=cnt&utm_mailing=tvl_traveler_news_newdb_ ACTIVE_2018_1016%20(1)%20remainder&bxid=MTQ5NTc0 OTAyMDYxS0&spMailingID=14445479&spUserID=MTQ5NTc 0OTAyMDYxS0&spJobID=1501287852&spReportId=MTUwM TI4Nzg1MgS2

Rev. William Barber wins a MacArthur 'Genius Grant' and its $625K prize By David Menconi and Camila Molina

W

illiam J. Barber II, North Carolina pastor and longtime political activist, is now a MacArthur Fellow. And he marked the occasion Thursday by getting arrested at a protest. Barber, the 55-year-old pastor of Goldsboro's Greenleaf Christian Church, is one of 25 winners of the MacArthur Fellowship's 2018 "Genius Grant." The award comes with a no-strings-attached grant of $625,000 paid over five years. When the award was announced, Barber was in Chicago at a protest for raising the minimum wage. "I've just been arrested in Chicago, and I'm waiting on their process," he said in a call to the News & Observer. "For minimum wage, in front of McDonald's headquarters." Nevertheless, the MacArthur news was a good spirit-lifter. "It's a gesture of support, to do more of what you're trying to do," Barber said. "It doesn't say rest on your laurels, but to keep on pushing. In this work, sometimes you get heavy criticism. People do say ugly things, 'You just want money.' I just want other people to have health care. You know, Jesus healed everybody and never charged a co-pay." As head of the North Carolina NAACP, Barber gained national attention starting in 2013 by spearheading the "Moral Monday" movement in the state. It was a series of weekly protest rallies at the Republicancontrolled N.C. General Assembly. Voting rights, education funding, LGBTQ rights and other progressive causes were on the agenda. Most weeks featured a fiery, sermon-style speech by Barber. "My drive comes from a number of places," Barber said in a YouTube statement about the award. "My father early on taught me that the only purpose of life is to make a difference in the lives of others and to stand up for what is right and just and full of love and full of compassion." Over the years, Barber has spoken out about the Racial Justice Act, school desegregation and gaymarriage rights. Not everyone has approved. hound," former Civitas president Francis de Luca told the News & Observer in 2014. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove of Durham, who has worked on the Poor People's Campaign and cowritten a book with Barber, praised him. "I think the work that Rev. Barber has been doing the past couple of decades is this crucial reconstruction work that the nation sorely sees a need for now," WilsonHartgrove said. "I celebrate that he knew he needed to be doing this work long before the award ever came along and I'm really grateful they can recognize that too and are willing to lift it up and give some support." The Rev. Mac Legerton, minister at United Church of Christ in Robeson County, echoed that sentiment. "His call to address and lift up the concerns and needs of the poor is particularly important in these times," Legerton said. "Poverty is growing in North Carolina and across the nation and world. Our society and religious communities have neglected the needs and aspirations of the poor." Former Vice President Al Gore also sent

Google+ Updated for Enterprise Users By Sean Michael Kerner

T

hree short days after announcing the shutdown and security flaw issues in the consumer version of Google+, Google announced a series of new enterprise-grade features in Google+ for G Suite. "As a part of our new posting experience for Google+ in G Suite, employees will be able to direct and discover content in a new way— tags," David Conway, product manager at Google, wrote in a blog post. "Even if you don’t know all employees across an organization, tags makes it easier to route content to the right folks." Additionally, Google+ for G Suite will be adding a feature that enables custom streams for users to receive topical information. Post analytics are also set to get a boost with a capability that will enable users to see how content is viewed by different parts of a company. So why is Google+ for G Suite continuing while the consumer version is not? Simply put, Google+ still serves a critical collaboration feature within G Suite, which is needed. G Suite users also pay Google, which helps to support the costs of securing Google+. Additionally, enterprises often configure more granular controls and user groups, while consumers

are more open to the entire internet.

User Data Policy In the wake of the Google+ flaw, Google is also tightening up its User Data Policy for the Gmail API that is used for consumers. "Only apps directly enhancing email functionality—such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services)—will be authorized to access this data," David Thacker, Google’s vice president of product management for G Suite, wrote in a blog post. "Moreover, these apps will need to agree to new rules on handling Gmail data and will be subject to heightened security assessments." No doubt there will be some users that will lament the loss of the consumer edition of Google+, and

you can count me among them. Google+ was a less noisy social networking tool that was useful for many different specific areas of technology, including Linux and open source. That said, there is no shortage of alternatives in the social networking landscape. The fact that a security bug triggered the final demise of Google+ for consumers and not the enterprise provides an interesting data point. It shows that for one of the world's largest technology vendors, it's easier and more profitable to secure enterprise collaboration than consumer social networking. www.eweek.com/security/google-updatedfor-enterprise-users-as-consumer-versionshuts-down?utm_medium=email&utm_ campaign=EWK_NL_EP_20181016_STR3 L2&dni=456540341&rni=25652266

Business - Govenment Contracting

U.S. Department of Defense Expands Bug Bounty Efforts By Sean Michael Kerner

W

hile it might seem counterintuitive, the U.S. Department of Defense has been actively encouraging hackers to hack the Pentagon since 2016, in an effort to identify software vulnerabilities. On Oct. 24, the DoD announced an expansion of its bug bounty efforts, awarding contracts to three managed bug bounty vendors: HackerOne, Synack and Bugcrowd. HackerOne and Synack had been part of an October 2016 contract with the DoD for bug bounties, which is now being renewed and extended to bring Bugcrowd into the program. "The contract is an IDIQ [Indefinite Duration Indefinite Quantity], which is a vehicle government agencies use to accelerate the engagement of emerging technologies across different departments," Casey Ellis, founder and CTO of Bugcrowd, told eWEEK. "The DDS [Defense Digital Service] team has done a phenomenal job of evangelizing the concept within the DoD, and the pipeline of work is already starting to fill." With a bug bounty program, an organization rewards security researchers for privately disclosing software vulnerabilities. The DoD has been running multiple bug bounty efforts since 2016, including Hack The Pentagon, Hack the

Air Force, Hack the Marines and Hack the Army, among other efforts. The Hack the Air Force 2.0 bounty in February, for example, was a 20-day challenge in which 106 vulnerabilities were disclosed and patched. The DoD paid out $103,883 in awards to security researchers as part of the effort. Hack the Air Force was run by HackerOne, which has also operated the Hack the Army and Hack the Marines efforts. There are two portions of the Hack the Pentagon contract, according to HackerOne CEO Mårten M i c k o s . Functional Area 1 (FA1) is what HackerOne was originally selected for. FA1 relates to public-facing assets, like the programs HackerOne has done with the Army, Air Force, Defense Travel System and Marine Corps. "We've done six challenges related to public-facing assets and will continue with more in the future," Mickos told eWEEK. "Functional Area 2 [FA2] is the second portion of the Hack the Pentagon contract, which is new to HackerOne and

what we're announcing today. It's related to government assets that aren't in the public domain." "The Hack the Pentagon program has taught us that no one is immune to vulnerabilities," he said. Mickos added that government organizations house some of the most secure defense systems in the world and are frequently targeted by adversaries. Yet, hackers have still been able to surface over 5,000 valid vulnerabilities to the DoD. "There is always something to be found whether in the public or

private sector," Mickos said. "At this point, not having a vulnerability disclosure program is negligent."  www.eweek.com/security/ us-department-of-defenseexpands-bug-bounty-efforts?utm_ medium=email&utm_campaign=EWK_ NL_EP_20181026_STR2L2&dni=456 907881&rni=25652266

Air Force Sets up $100,000 VQ-Prize Contest for Space Awareness Visualization By Alan Boyle

T

he U.S. Air Force (www. airforce.com) is looking for a few good apps to visualize satellites and other objects in Earth orbit — and it’s willing to pay $100,000 in prizes for them. That’s the bottom line for the Air Force Visionary Q-Prize Competition, or VQ-Prize, which runs through Jan. 15. The tech challenge is aimed at encouraging non-traditional industry partners to develop visualization tools to enhance space situational awareness for the Pentagon’s space operators. “The need for timely and accurate object tracking is paramount to the defense of space, and this competition will help augment existing capabilities with visualization tools that enable operators to intuitively absorb and quickly navigate massive amounts of space object data,” Brig. Gen. William Liquori, the Air Force Space Command’s director of strategic requirements, architectures and analysis, said in a news release (www.afspc.af.mil/ News/Article-Display/Article/1675555/ air-force-seeking-top-spaceawareness-innovators-with-vq-prizecompetition).

The software tools can include flat-screen user interfaces as well as virtual-reality and augmentedreality solutions. Contestants can include universities, individuals and small businesses. No background in space applications is required. Space situational awareness is a high priority for the Pentagon as well as the White House, which outlined new procedures for monitoring

space objects in a policy directive signed by President Donald Trump in June (www. geekwire. com/2018/ presidenttrump-directspentagonc r e a t e separate-equalspace-force).

The number of objects to track is expected to rise dramatically as commercial space ventures pick up the pace for satellite launches. The Air Force and the Wright Brothers Institute (www.wbiinnovates.com) have designed an innovation challenge that’s meant to guide contestants through the software development process, hosted on the InnoCentive problem-solving platform (www.innocentive.com/ar/ challenge/9934120). The solutions should provide new ways of visualizing and understanding events including satellite maneuvers, high-speed conjunctions in low Earth orbit, activity in geosynchronous Earth orbit, new object discovery, multiplesatellite launches and satellite breakups. All submissions will be evaluated by military space operators, space development professionals and experts on human factors. Winning entries will have to present all the critical information about orbital situations clearly and

Stuffin.space bnox.be

simultaneously, without cluttering up displays or overstimulating software users. “Contestants should know that producing simple graphics of satellites in orbit around a 2-D or 3-D map is already available through a variety of existing tools, and replication of these capabilities is not desired,” the contest’s organizers say (http://stuffin.space). Up to $100,000 in prize money will be distributed in the course of the competition, with multiple prizes awarded for each category and a single VQ-Prize awarded to the best overall submission. For details, check out InnoCentive’s VQ-Prize webpage (www.innocentive.com/ar/ challenge/9934120).  www.geekwire.com/2018/air-forcesets-100000-vq-prize-contestspace-awareness-visualizationtools/?utm_medium=webfeeds&utm_ source=feedly

Serena Williams Sang "I Touch Myself" for Breast Cancer Awareness By Elizabeth Narins

S

erena Williams has long been vocal when it comes to gender equality on the court and women's health issues, but in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (www.

nationalbreastcancer.org/breastcancer-awareness-month)—it's

October, hello and welcome—she used her voice in a brand new way: The tennis legend and new mother sang The Divinyls's "I Touch Myself" in a clip that's since gone viral on her Instagram page, acquiring 1.97 million views since it was posted a few days ago. Because Williams, who sings topless while clutching her breasts, has a voice that's unexpectedly angelic, it's totally worth a listen: www.instagram.com/p/ BoUJN25na2Y/?utm_source=ig_ embed&utm_campaign=embed_ video_watch_again.

In her post, Williams explains that she recorded this song as part of the Australian bra brand Berlie's "I Touch Myself Project," (www. berlei.com.au/TheChrissy?utm_ m e d i u m = a ff i l i a t e & u t m _ s o u r c e = r akuten&siteID=TnL5HPStwNwrPuZE7ZEZ3jjSNp9jG7WXg) which

honors Divinyls member Chrissy Amphlett. The artist, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, lost her battle with breast cancer in 2013. The campaign is designed to remind women to self-check their breasts for irregularities. "Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it's an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world," Williams

wrote of what inspired her to participate. "I just hope this helps to remind women of that." Another reminder: It's smart to check your breasts and armpit area for lumps, thickening, or hardening knots every month a few days after your period ends, according to BreastCancer. org and the National Breast Cancer Foundation (www. nationalbreastcancer.org/ breast-self-exam). 

How the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Winners have Worked to End Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War By Rosie Spinks

2018 Nobel Peace Prize winners Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege.

T

he 2018 Nobel Peace Prize (www.nobelprize.org/prizes/ peace/2018/press-release) has

been awarded to Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist, and Nadia Murad, a Yazidi human rights activist from Iraq, for their work toward ending the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Though they share the same cause, the two recipients came to their work in remarkably different ways. Murad, who is the UN’s Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking, was kidnapped by

ISIS in 2014 at the age of 21, surviving rape and torture at the hands of militants before finally escaping. After her ordeal, she testified about her experience as well as the broader oppression of the Yazidi minority group in Iraq in front of the UN Security Council, demonstrating what the Nobel committee called “uncommon courage in recounting her own suffering”. As an activist for refugee and women’s rights, she went on to found Nadia’s Initiative (https:// nadiasinitiative.org/impact), which

was instrumental in persuading the UN Security Council to pass a resolution opening an investigation into the war crimes systematically committed against the Yazidi people by ISIS, as well as prompting several states and commissions to recognize crimes against the Yazidi people as genocide. She is the author of the memoir The Last Girl, published in November 2017. As the Nobel Prize committee noted, “Nadia Murad is one of an estimated 3,000 Yazidi girls and women who were victims of rape and other abuses by the IS army.

The abuses were systematic and part of a military strategy. They served as a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities.”

Denis Mukwege has devoted his career to treating tens of thousands of victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as openly criticizing governments for not doing enough to prevent sexual violence from being used as a strategy of war. Sexual war crimes are horrifically common in DRC, with years of war and chronic conflict leading to pathologized sexual violence and mutilation, acted out predominately on women. For his tireless work, Dr Mukwege earned the moniker “the man who mends women,” which served as

the title for a 2016 documentary (http://mukwege-themovie.com) about this work. The Nobel committee called Mukwege the “the foremost, most unifying symbol both nationally and internationally of the struggle to end sexual violence in war and armed conflict.” The award comes at a time when there is great international focus on sexual violence against women. Though there was some speculation that the award might go to Donald Trump and/or Kim Jong-un for their unconventional approach to decreasing tensions on the Korean peninsula, the choice to award Murad and Mukwege is more reflective of the cultural moment.  https://qz.com/1414764/nobelpeace-prize-winners-denismukwege-and-nadia-murad-winfor-work-against-sexual-violence/

R

oger Robinson, the veteran character actor who won a Tony Award, starred in such films as Brother to Brother and had recurring roles on Kojak and How to Get Away With Murder, has died. He was 78. Robinson died Wednesday in Escondido, California, of complications from a heart condition, Ebony Repertory Theatre producing artistic director Wren T. Brown announced. In last year's HBO telefilm The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Robinson portrayed Day Lacks, the first cousin and father of Henrietta's (Renee Elise Goldsberry) children. And on ABC's How to Get Away With Murder, he played Mac Harkness, the father of Viola Davis' Annalise Keating. In 2009, Robinson received his Tony for best performance by a featured actor in a play for his portrayal of Bynum Walker in Joe Turner's Come and Gone. Thirteen years earlier, he was nominated in the same category for playing Hedley in August Wilson's Seven Guitars, and he starred as Becker in a Royal National Theatre production of the playwright's Jitney that won

an Olivier Award. Early in his career, Robinson portrayed the young detective Gil Weaver on Telly Savalas' Kojak for three seasons of the 1970s CBS cop drama. A former Universal Studios contract player, he gueststarred on such shows as Ironside, Starsky and Hutch, The Jeffersons, A Man Called Hawk, Law & Order, New York Undercover, Homicide: Life on the Street, ER, NYPD Blue, Rubicon, Kate Brasher and Elementary. Robinson received a supporting actor Spirit Award nomination for Brother to Brother (2004) and also appeared on the big screen in Believe in Me (1971), Willie Dynamite (1974), Newman's Law (1974), Meteor (1979), It's My Turn (1980), The Lonely Guy (1984), Who's the Man? (1993) and Wedding Daze (2006) Robinson was born in Seattle on May 2, 1940. His father was a musician and his mother an educator. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1958 and briefly attended Everett Junior College before moving to Los Angeles in 1959. After a stint in the U.S. Navy — he played the oboe and tenor saxophone with the third Naval District Band in Brooklyn — Robinson studied acting with director Lloyd Richards and, while still in the service, was hired to play a soldier off-Broadway in A Walk in Darkness. He made his Broadway debut in 1969 opposite Hal Holbrook and Al Pacino in Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? Robinson also worked on Broadway in the musical Amen Corner, The Miser, The Iceman Cometh and Drowning Crow. He was in more than 30 off-Broadway plays, with his final stage performance coming this year opposite Wendell Pierce in Some Old Black Man.  www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/roger-robinson-tonywinning-actor-and-a-detective-on-kojak-dies-at-78/arBBNGcRk?ocid=spartandhp

Nelson Mandela Statue Unveiled at the United Nations

President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled a statue of Madiba at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Heritage Day with President of the UN General Assembly, Ms Maria Espinosa and UN Secretary General Mr António Guterres. © @PresidencyZA/Twitter

Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks at the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela Statue, in New York today:

I

am pleased to be with you today to unveil this statue of one of humanity’s great leaders. Nelson Mandela embodied the highest values of the United Nations-peace, forgiveness, compassion and human dignity. He was a champion for all people-in his words and in his actions. He was willing to fight and die for the ideals he held so dear. When he achieved the pinnacle of power as president of his beloved country, Madiba set an example that still resounds throughout Africa and the world-he stepped down after one term, confident in the durability of South Africa’s newfound democracy. He did not pursue power

for its own sake, but simply as a means of service. This humility is a hallmark of Madiba’s greatness. The fight against apartheid marks a landmark in human rights and freedom. The credit goes to the people of South Africa, but the United Nations played its role, a role that we should be proud of. So, it is more than appropriate that our Headquarters should be honoured by this statue. I thank the Government of South Africa for its generosity in donating it. From this day on, all delegates, staff and visitors to the United Nations can be constantly inspired by Madiba’s legacy looking at this wonderful statue. Thank you. The nation of South Africa donated the statue in commemoration of 100-years since Mandela's birth.  www.un.org/press/en/2018/sgsm19231.doc.htm www.usatoday.com/videos/news/nation/2018/09/24/ununveils-statue-honoring-nelson-mandela/37918943/

Ethiopia Gets Its 1st Female President By Laurel Wamsley

E

thiopia's parliament has made Sahle-Work Zewde the country's first female president. And while the role is largely ceremonial, her appointment carries power in what it signifies. Sahle-Work, an experienced diplomat, is the first female head of state in Ethiopia's modern history. In June, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Sahle-Work as special representative to the African Union and head of the U.N. Office to the African Union — the first woman in the role. She was previously director-general of the U.N. Office at Nairobi and held a range of diplomatic posts, including Ethiopia's ambassador to France and Djibouti.

"A career diplomat & senior official at the UN, she brings the right competence & experience to the office," Fitsum Arega, chief of staff to the prime minister's office, tweeted on Thursday. "In a patriarchal society such as ours, the appointment of a female head of state not only sets the standard for the future but also normalises women as decision-makers in public life." In Ethiopia, the prime minister holds the executive power. According to the Ethiopian Constitution, presidential powers and functions include appointing ambassadors, receiving foreign envoys and granting pardons. Sahle-Work's appointment comes just a week after

Mauritius Citizenship and Passports For Sale

M

a u r i t i a n P r i m e Minister and Finance Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, has announced that Mauritius will offer citizenship and passports to foreigners, for a fee of US$1m (€859,645) and US$500,000 (€429,820) respectively. The decision was announced in the island’s 2018 budget speech, and forms part of measures to increase the country’s funds, as the government plans to increase its budget expenditure by 5% to US$3.8bn (€3.27bn) in the 2018/19 fiscal year. For an additional US$100,000 (€85,965) each, foreigners applying for citizenship can also apply for dependants and spouses.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed overhauled the Cabinet. Abiy, who was appointed in April, reduced the size of the Cabinet to 20 from 28 — and then named women to half of the ministerial roles. Women now fill the two most prominent Cabinet positions: minister of defense and the newly created minister of peace, who oversees the intelligence and security forces. Metasebia Shewaye Yilma, a media entrepreneur and president of the Ethiopian women's business group AWiB, told NPR that she is "ecstatic" at SahleWork's appointment, calling it "superb news for all us here, especially for women." She said the move was significant in numerous aspects. "One is women are represented in power," Metasebia says. "By her being the president, we feel like now the 50% of us is represented in that. "And the second thing is it will really change the

“The first scheme will offer foreigners the opportunity to obtain Mauritian citizenship provided they make a non-refundable contribution of US$1m (€859,645) to a Mauritius Sovereign Fund (www.sovereigngroup.com/ mauritius/investment-funds-mauritius). For their spouse and dependants, they will have to make an additional contribution of US$100,000 per member of family,” said Jugnauth. Passports for dependants and spouses of individuals applying for passports, will come with a price tag of US$50,000 (€42,982) per passport. But applicants will only be considered if they meet various criteria required by the government (www.sovereigngroup.com/mauritius/ immigration-and-residency-in-mauritius). narrative that you know women cannot hold political leadership positions or they cannot contribute much — you know, all those kinds of different narratives that there are now. They're now going to be changed." With women in power, she says, it will bring new qualities and leadership styles to Ethiopia's government and provide inspiration for the next generation of girls. Metasebia calls the political changes "a huge leap" in the generations-long struggle for gender equality in the country. "I would say now is a little late. One Africa:

J

Tell the US Government that North Africa is Africa Too!

oin with and support the United Africa Organization’s campaign to petition the U.S. Department of State to include the whole African continent under its Bureau of African Affairs.

Why? The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, led by Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson, currently excludes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara from its agenda. Instead, the aforementioned countries are grouped with the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, together with Iran, Iraq, Israel and others. This artificial distinction between North Africa and the rest of Africa

negatively impacts US foreign policy relations throughout the entire continent of Africa. We unequivocally reject the argument that North African countries are outside the scope of African affairs. North Africa is geographically and historically part of the African continent, and all fifty-three (53) independent African states, including North African countries, are represented in the African Union (AU). It would be far more productive for the State Department to engage with the entire continent of Africa, including North Africa, under its Bureau of African Affairs. We are one Africa, from the Cape to Cairo, indivisible and bound together! Therefore, no square inch of African

land should be excluded from African affairs.

Sign The Petition!!! Go to www.change.org/petitions/ one-africa-tell-us-state-departmentthat-north-africa-is-part-of-africa and sign the online petition to support this important proposition. Next tell everyone you know to sign. 

eaturing forty trailblazing black women in American history, Little Leaders educates and inspires as it relates true stories of breaking boundaries and achieving beyond expectations. Illuminating text paired with irresistible illustrations bring to life both iconic and lesser-known female figures of Black history such as abolitionist Sojourner Truth, pilot Bessie Coleman, chemist Alice Ball, politician Shirley Chisholm, mathematician Katherine Johnson, poet Maya Angelou, and filmmaker Julie Dash. Among these biographies, readers will find heroes, role models, and everyday women who did extraordinary things - bold women whose actions and beliefs contributed to making the world better for generations of girls and women to come. Whether they were putting pen to paper, soaring through the air or speaking up for the rights of others, the women profiled in these pages were all taking a stand against a world that didn't always accept them. The leaders in this book may be little, but they all did something big and amazing, inspiring generations to come. www.amazon.com/dp/B072V4QDCF/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_ encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Turning Love Into Action A Father Creates and Markets Books for Children

R

obert “Bo” Chaney has found that there is a misconception that no one cares about our youth. As a result of his personal experiences as well as the interactions that he has had with today’s young people, he has a passion to reach as many young people as he can. Throughout his adult life, Bo has successfully mentored many young, underserved, minority males, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to navigate school and the workplace. Bo has spent numerous hours developing curriculum that is customized to meet the needs of underserved youth. Through his dedication, he's found ways to prepare young people for the workforce, through strategic lessons and connections which “uncover the unknown.” One way Bo has approached d his passion is to prepare young people through his series of books focused on grade school kids - The Adventures of Rob & Rocky. The books expose children to career options, life choices, and cultural differences. These books are written using “sight words”, words children should know by sight

at the end of their grade level. The series starts when Rob and Rocky walk to school and discuss what they want to be when they grow up. Through basic conversation, they talk about a variety of career options that have been overlooked for years such as Fireighter, Mailman nd more . Check out the first book in the

series and share it with teachers and school systems in your area www.robandrocky.com. Hear and see Bo talk about the book series at: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ot0ibLIXx9E&feature=you tu.be. The Adventures of Rob and Rocky will make a great Christmas gift for family members and friends. 

Parker House Sausage

(www.parkerhousesausage.com) was started by Chicago entrepreneur, Judge H. Parker who came to Chicago from Montgomery County, Tennessee with little more than the conviction that there was a potential market for homemade sausage products prepared according to his mother’s recipes. By 1919 Judge Parker began selling his unique blend of herbs and spices mixed with flavorful, savory sausage from a horse drawn cart on a retail basis. Recognized as one of the oldest family owned businesses in the U.S. In 2014 Parker House expanded its product line to include chicken products including breakfast sausage, hot links, and smoked sausage.

For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Politics

have shaped our country’s history—US Presidents such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, well-known political figures such as Terry McAuliffe and Howard Dean, and legendary activists and historical figures such as Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King, and Betty Shabazz. For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Politics is filled with personal stories that bring to life heroic figures we all know and introduce us to some of those who’ve worked behind the scenes but are still hidden. Whatever their perch, the Colored Girls are always focused on the larger goal of “hurrying history” so that every American — regardless of race, gender or religious background — can have a seat at the table. Wade in the Water: Poems

T

he lives of black women in American politics are remarkably absent from the shelves of bookstores and libraries. For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Politics is a sweeping view of American history from the vantage points of four women who have lived and worked behind the scenes in politics for over thirty years—Donna Brazile, Yolanda Caraway, Leah Daughtry, and Minyon Moore—a group of women who call themselves The Colored Girls. Like many people who have spent their careers in public service, they view their lives in four-year waves where presidential campaigns and elections have been common threads. For most of the Colored Girls, their story starts with Jesse Jackson’s first campaign for president. From there, they went on to work on the presidential campaigns of Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Over the years, they’ve filled many roles: in the corporate world, on campaigns, in unions, in churches, in their own businesses and in the White House. Through all of this, they’ve worked with those who

Here, private utterance becomes part of a larger choral arrangement as the collection widens to include erasures of The Declaration of Independence and the correspondence between slave owners, a found poem comprised of evidence of corporate pollution and accounts of near-death experiences, a sequence of letters written by African Americans enlisted in the Civil War, and the survivors’ reports of recent immigrants and refugees. Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me by Charlamagne Tha God Fear is holding you back. It’s time to turn the tables and channel your fears to actually fuel your success.

B

eing “shook” is more than a rap lyric for Charlamagne, it’s his mission to overcome. While it may seem like he is ahead of the

game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties—fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and ultimately, fear of failure. Shook One chronicles his journey to beat back those fears and empowers you to no longer be held back from your potential. Shook One details the ways anxiety has been a driving force orce in Charlamagne’s life since childhood. For many years, he stressed over what he thought were personal shortcomings: being unpopular in school, potential rejection by women, being ugly, and worst of all, falling into the life of stagnation or crime that caught up so many of his friends and family in his hometown of Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Even after achieving national prominence as a radio personality, Charlamagne still found himself paralyzed by thoughts that he wouldn’t be able to take his career to the next level. But now, in Shook One, he is working through these problems with help from mentors, guests on his show, and therapy. He knows therapy and showing weakness are anxiety producing in the black community, but this is one of the reasons he wants to own his truth—to clear a path for others in hopes that they won’t feel shame while dealing openly with their mental health.  www.amazon.com/Shook-One-Anxiety-Playing-Tricks/ dp/1501193252
