Travel Industry News Virgin Atlantic Will Offer Wi-Fi on all Flights

V

irgin Atlantic revealed details of a new in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity plan.

The airline confirmed details that its entire fleet of aircraft will now be able to receive Wi-Fi during flights around the world, with all 39 aircraft connected, even on transatlantic flights and those carried out by its US partner network Delta Airlines.

The network, which is backed by Panasonic and Gogo technology is available to millions of customers from this week. Virgin Atlantics will use Panasonic Wi-Fi on its 787 fleets, while the A330s, 747s, A340600s will use Gogo technology.

Due to in-flight restrictions, customers will only be able to connect to the wireless network once their flight reaches above 10,000 feet, so as to prevent interruption in service during takeoff.

On the 787 fleet, customers can choose between a ‘WiFi Light’

connection which provides 40MB of data for £4.99 (approximately $6.50) or the ‘WiFi Max’ which offers 150MB data from £14.99 (approximately $19.54).

Those flying on an A330 or 747 will also be able to have access to a Messaging Pass for £2.99

(approximately $3.90), which offers unlimited SMS throughout the duration of the flight.

A statement released by Mark Anderson, Virgin Atlantic executive vice president, said “Innovation has always been in our blood and we’ve worked closely with WiFi providers to develop the fastest, most reliable connection across the Atlantic, and are the first carrier to offer WiFi between the UK and the Caribbean, China and Africa”.

Lowcost Flights to Europe

ow, EasyJet (www.easyjet.com/ en), a budget airline, is making global strides in the low-cost carrier space by launching flights between the U.K. and destinations far and wide, including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Buenos Aires, and Singapore.

The new long-haul service, Worldwide by EasyJet, is a collaboration between the U.K.based carrier and two partners, Norwegian Air and WestJet. Rather than booking typically expensive direct flights, passengers can purchase a low-cost ticket on EasyJet that connects to a Norwegian or WestJet flight from London Gatwick airport. Though the two legs of the trip are operated by different airlines, passengers can buy their tickets in one sweep on EasyJet’s website. And while passengers still need to transfer their own baggage between flights, the BBC confirmed, instead of going from one airline desk to see Travel Industry News on page 8

another to recheck bags, they can just go to EasyJet’s designated Gatwick Connects desk.

The new service makes worldwide travel much cheaper, no matter your origin city or intended destination. This year’s group of winners span the globe, from market-filled Hoi An in Vietnam to Florence, a European culture capital. Of note, however, is what ties these contenders together: Almost all are pedestrianfriendly, possess ample green space, and have a rich history that’s being thoughtfully preserved as the city grows.

Posting Your Safari Photos May Be Endangering Wildlife

Lions! It’s no secret that safaris in South Africa and Namibia offer unforgettable opportunities to experience some of the world’s most incredible wildlife in its natural habitats.

But the president of one safari outfitter said recently the trips may also be tipping off poachers to the whereabouts of certain trophy animals.

Sherwin Banda, president of African Travel, Inc., a safari outfitter based in Glendale, California, recently explained that built-in geotagging features on Instagram and many other social media apps capture the exact location of each photograph, embed this information in each picture, and include it among the data that is published when the photos appear online.

In short, he said, every great Instagram picture is an update on an animal’s location in the bush.

“People come on safari and take pictures to remember the moment, but what they don’t realize is that those who intend to hurt the animals are mining the pictures for information,” he explained.

“Unawares, these tourists are aiding and abetting people who would do the animals harm.”

Recent poaching numbers in Africa certainly are staggering. In South Africa, the number of rhinos killed each year by poachers soared to 1,175 in 2015 from very few (13) in 2007. Namibia does not appear to report to the public the poaching statistics within

its borders, but the Namibian Sun reported 116 elephant deaths due to poaching between January 2012 and May 2014.

(Of course, we all remember last year when Cecil the Lion was killed in Zimbabwe, as well.)

To help fight this trend, Banda and his colleagues at African Travel shared some tips for how to save the animals by turning off geotagging on your next trip:

Android Open the camera app, go to Settings, and switch off the GPS tagging option.

Twitter Geotagging only will be turned on if you have turned it on manually in the Settings menu under Privacy > Location Services. If you are posting from a laptop, click on the gear icon in the right corner, then go to Settings to check privacy settings.

he lush Okavango Delta in Botswana is the world’s largest inland delta, and the best place to experience an African water safari. Though July is technically the peak dry season, the water level here is at its highest; that’s because it takes several months for the rains which drench Angola’s highlands in the wet season to trickle down and pool here on the plains. Avoid motorboating around and instead opt for a mokoro or traditional canoe, a punt-like vessel which

allows you to drift in near silence through the reeds, spotting jewelcolored insects, easily startled birds, and beautiful plants up close.

Even better, once on dry land, the lack of rains means big game are concentrated around watering holes so they’re easier to spot in places like Chobe National Park (http://chobenationalpark. co.za). Temps are lower and the mosquitoes are at a minimum, too.

The Moroccan Town Drenched in Blue

by David Perry Perched in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, the medieval village of Chefchaouen was once a place you drove through, not to. But then the women of the town had a – literally – bright idea to put it on the map..

Transforming the town By painting the entire town medina blue, the townswomen transformed what had been a nondescript whistle stop on the old caravan route between Fez and Tangiers into one of the most unlikely – and successful – destinations in Morocco.

A new tradition “The blue in Chefchaouen only started 20 years ago,” said local guide Abdeslam Mouden, who remembers the town once being predominately white.

“Traditionally, only one area of the city was painted in blue, the old Jewish area. Now the whole old town is painted three times a year.”

Unanswered questions No one is sure why this little mountain stronghold drenched itself in blue. Some say that it’s a spiritual colour for Muslims and Jews, while others believe it’s a tribute to the mountain spring that makes the settlement possible in a forbidding landscape. Still others say the colour blue keeps mosquitoes at bay.

Urban renewal Not only did the women start this tradition, but they continue it to this day with teams of two or three painting late at night when the rest of Chefchaouen is asleep. There is little sign of their work the next day, aside from drying paint.

Done by hand To walk through Chefchaouen is to see how high a painter can reach; the ground floor is meticulously hued, but above, it is often the original white or bare stone.

ASKY Introduces Non-stop Services to Accra, Lagos and Abuja

he Pan African Airline, ASKY, has commenced daily flights in Lagos, Accra and Abuja starting July 3, 2017.

A statement from the Airline said these new routes offered more capacity and flexibility with a significant reduction in flight time between Lagos, Accra, Abuja and the entire network of ASKY (www. flyasky.com/asky).

The statement said this was in line with its mission to seamlessly connect West and Central Africa, making business and leisure travel easy and reducing the flying time it takes to connect cities in the region.

It said with this new service, passengers would be able to connect these cities everyday departing in the morning and arriving later in the day.

“In addition to this, ASKY also introduced additional baggage

allowance which enables passengers to travel with more baggage for less,” it added.

Passengers in Economy class would have 40kg baggage allowance, while those in business

class would be entitled to 50kg.

In-Flight Wi-Fi is About to Get a Lot Better

or many fliers, tedium is the worst part of being stuck in coach on an ultra-long flight. But that may be about to change: Uninterrupted, high-speed Internet—with at-home speeds and bandwidth—is coming to jets around the world, including in some places where Wi-Fi is just about nonexistent. While your seat might feel like a torture device, at least you’ll have House of Cards to ease the pain.

Upgrades aren’t confined to a single airline, or even alliance grouping, either. Norwegian, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Air New Zealand are among the international carriers that are close to, or already installing the necessary technology, according to representatives of Honeywell, one of the companies behind the project.

Airlines have been talking about better Wi-FI for years, of course, but the technology just wasn’t there— most in-flight Wi-Fi has depended on connections to ground-based towers, due to the high expense and technical difficulties involved in harnessing high-quality satellite connections over large expanses of ocean.

Especially with a full load of passengers logging on, connections can slow to a frustrating crawl. Video streaming and other high-bandwidth entertainment is often impossible.

For one, the recent launch of a satellite owned by Inmarsat, the U.K. firm that gained fame during the search for MH370, will supplement its existing Global Xpress network of three satellites circling the Earth.

With the expansion, Internet access “should be no

different at 35,000 feet over the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean” than it is in the skies over Europe or the U.S., says Frederik Van Essen, Inmarsat’s senior vice president, strategy and business development for aviation, whose company is working with avionics supplier Honeywell to bring the high-speed Wi-Fi product to airliner cabins.

It’s still up to the individual airline to set parameters on how much content customers can download and how much to charge.

Honeywell markets its system to airlines as a suite of services branded as JetWave, and individual carriers can customize the product they offer fliers. Before you start dreaming of Netflix binging on-board, there are a few caveats. Even for airlines that have already signed on, it could take a year or more to install the system on all of their fleets. And it’s still up to the individual airline to set parameters on how much content customers can download and how much to charge—most carriers, for example, prohibit Skype or other voice connections in-flight and will likely continue to do so. Lufthansa, which told Condé Nast Traveler that it has already wired 27 A320s, along with 31 planes owned by sister carrier Austrian Airlines, has set pricing for its shortand medium-haul flights, where it costs $3.42 (€3) to use messaging services, $7.97 (€7) to surf the net, and $13.6612 (€12) to stream. The carrier plans to roll out the same service for its long-distance flights, but that part of the project “is still in the planning phase,” says Lufthansa spokesman Robert Barracco.

Other providers are upping their game too; Gogo, which currently works with Delta and dozens of other U.S.-based airlines to provide in-flight Wi-Fi, is rolling out a satellite-based system that can offer speeds of up to 70 megabits per second. It’s part of the company’s efforts to improve speed and reliability, which had been the cause of a number of passenger complaints.

And lest anyone think this is just for passengers’ entertainment (not that that isn’t a worthy goal), Honeywell points out the same connectivity that will let you stream movies also enables a package of branded apps for pilots, which, among other things, gives a more accurate picture of weather conditions to help counter turbulence and to navigate challenging airfields.

effreys Bay is one of the five most famous surfing destinations in the world and hosts the annual World Surf League (WSL) surfing event at Super Tubes during July.

Spectators and professional surfers from all over the world flock to this event.

A very long, fast, tubing right hand point break breaks along the west side of the bay. The break is regarded as one of the best right hand point breaks in the entire world, in both consistency and quality, in season. It has been divided up into several sections, including, from the top of the point, Kitchen Windows, Magna tubes, Boneyards, Supertubes,

Impossibles, Tubes, the Point, and Albatross. “Supertubes”, which itself breaks for about 300m or more, is regarded as the best part of the wave. On rare occasions (large wave sizes, wide-breaking waves, and even swells), Boneyards can link up all the way to the Point for a ride over one kilometre long.

Optimal size is considered to be from about 4 to 10 feet (Hawaiian scale), or about 8 to 20 feet wave faces. The most consistent waves occur between about May to mid September, also often coinciding with offshore winds, although good waves can occasionally occur at other times of the year.

Yves Saint Laurent Museum to Open in Marrakech, Morocco

By Chloe Koura A museum dedicated to fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent will open in Marrakech this October, the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation has announced.

C

overing an area of 4,000m2, the Marrakech museum will have a

permanent exhibition space displaying Laurent’s work, a room for temporary exhibitions, a 130seat auditorium, a café-restaurant, a bookshop and a research library.

The 5,000 books in the library will cover topics including Arabic and Andalusian history, botany, history of fashion and poetry.

Built out of local terracotta, concrete and earth-coloured

terrazzo, the museum will be situated opposite the designer’s Majorelle Gardens, which along with the Berber museum draws approximately 700,000 visitors each year.

French architecture company Studio KO were inspired by “the duality of curves and lines, and the succession of loose and clean cuts” within Laurent’s collections when designing the building’s structure.

The press release described: “from the outside, the building is composed of cubic forms adorned with bricks which create a pattern resembling threads of fabric. The inside is markedly different, like the lining of a luxurious couture jacket: luminous, velvety and smooth.”

L

ondon-based studio Thomas Heatherwick has completed South Africa‘s biggest art museum — The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). The museum is housed in 9,500 sq mmetersof custom designed space, spread over nine floors, carved out of the monumental structure of the historic Grain Silo Complex. The silo, disused since 1990, stands as a monument to the industrial past of Cape Town, at one time the tallest building in South Africa, now given new life through the transformation by Heatherwick Studio.

The galleries and the atrium space at the centre of the museum have been carved from the silos’ dense cellular structure of fortytwo tubes that pack the building.

The development includes 6,000 sq metres of exhibition space in 80 gallery spaces, a rooftop sculpture garden, state of the art storage and conservation areas, a bookshop, a restaurant, bar, and reading rooms.

The museum will also house Centres for a Costume Institute, Photography, Curatorial Excellence, the Moving Image, Performative Practice and Art Education.

“The idea of turning a giant disused concrete grain silo made from 116 vertical tubes into a new kind of public space was weird and compelling from the beginning,” said Thomas Heatherwick, Founder of Heatherwick Studio. “We were

excited by the opportunity to unlock this formerly dead structure and transform it into somewhere for people to see and enjoy the most incredible artworks from the continent of Africa.”

“The technical challenge was to find a way to carve out spaces and galleries from the ten-storey high tubular honeycomb without completely destroying the authenticity of the original building,” added the architect.

“The result was a design and construction process that was as much about inventing new forms of surveying, structural support and sculpting, as it was about normal construction techniques. As the opening approaches we are all looking forward to witnessing the impact of the museum’s ambitious artistic programme and the museum taking its pivotal place in the middle of Africa’s cultural infrastructure.”

The museum is one of several facilities that Heatherwick Studio is creating within the grain silo building, which forms part of the V&A Waterfront, a harbour-side complex filled with bars and restaurants. Use This International Travel Checklist Before Your Next Trip

Traveling abroad is a snap if you know what you’re doing.

here’s a lot more to consider when traveling overseas than getting to the airport an hour earlier. Even going somewhere as close as Mexico can create a whole laundry list of chores you need to accomplish before heading abroad. Whether it’s changing your money, alerting your bank, or ensuring you don’t rack up a fourfigure phone bill, here are some of the financial steps you’ll need to take when going abroad.

Call your bank and credit card companies Few things are more frustrating than going to buy a post-flight bottle of water at the airport newsstand and getting your credit card declined. If your bank doesn’t know you’re absconding to Mexico with your own money, it’ll assume someone else is and freeze all activity, leaving you with only the cash you came with until you call and straighten it out. Notify your bank and credit card companies to avoid any unwanted security stops.

Get cash from your bank Trading money at the airport will have you paying between five to 15% more than the prevailing bank rate, on top of a $10 service fee. A week or so before your trip, order your destination’s currency from your bank. You can usually pick it up within a day or two, and many will deliver it right to your door.

Check on your mobile phone plan A staggering number of people think just because their cell phone works in another country, it’s covered under their mobile plan.

Then after calling every friend they have to say they just went shopping in Paris, they have to forego their next vacation to pay off the phone bill. Take a look at what your current plan offers for international coverage, and see if you need to change it. To guarantee you don’t spend any extra money, leave your phone on airplane mode after you land and connect to WiFi whenever possible.

Make sure you have a credit card without international transaction fees Forty seven cents here and 65 cents there probably won’t break your bank if your credit/ debit card charges a few percentage points per foreign transaction. But it’s also money you’re essentially throwing away, since plenty of credit cards don’t charge foreign transaction fees. Bankrate (www. bankrate.com) has a handy chart that breaks down who charges what, so apply for a fee-free card before you go.

Monrovia’s Beach has a Luxury Mall

A

Chinese construction company, TSMO Investment Corp., has come to town to build T M Mall, Liberia’s first Western-style shopping complex.

The glass structure will house a Cold Stone Creamery franchise and H&M. The Nigerian cinema giant Silverbird has landed Liberia’s first state-of-the-art movie theater in TM Mall, complete with Blade Runner posters and the smell of fake butter. As locals speculate about what will actually fill the mall, expansion plans are afoot for a boardwalk.

The shopping center quickly shot up, built entirely with materials brought in from China on 1,000

and restaurants run by Lebanese entrepreneurs — many born and raised in Liberia — who’ve dominated the hospitality market for decades.

For Monrovia, “there’s some serious benefits to having a mall of that size,” Mvogo says, bringing tax revenue and other places for those who do have money to spend it. GDP has risen steadily

shipping containers, according to TSMO staff. The land, leased from a private owner, sits at the foot of UN Drive, a hub of diplomatic headquarters hosting some of Monrovia’s poshest hotels, apartment complexes,

under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Still, with 64% of Liberians living below the poverty line, “the mall is not going to cater to 85% of the population,” says the city’s mayor, Clara Doe Mvogo. But to thrive, it doesn’t have to.

Following the growing trend of prolific building by Chinese contractors in Liberia, and across Africa, the project’s long-term vision includes rollerbladers skating down a boardwalk, playgrounds, more hotels, and a new port on Miami Beach. Near the mall entrance, passersby stop in their tracks to watch Hollywood film trailers playing on a giant outdoor screen. eople throughout the country might see some big changes happening to their driver’s licenses and state IDs. As of February 2013, 19 states have demonstrated compliance with the REAL ID Act, a piece of legislature that imposes much stricter measures on how people can obtain a driver’s license, and sets more thorough standards as to what will be displayed on them.

Called the new “national ID,” the REAL ID Act has gained some traction in light of recent events like the Boston Marathon bombings.

But what exactly is the REAL ID Act, and how will it affect drivers across the nation?

The History of REAL ID After 9/11, the federal government began to look at ways to increase security surrounding state identification cards and driver’s licenses, in an attempt to prevent further terrorism and/or unlawful entry into and out of the country.

In 2005, the House of Representatives passed a bill into law called the REAL ID Act. This Act would set certain federal standards upon all driver’s licenses, which are currently regulated by each individual state. After being passed into law, the bill was tabled until 2007, when it was announced that the federal enforcement of the act would be postponed for a period of two years. However, many state governments were slow to support this act, feeling that it not only infringed upon states’ rights handed to them by the 10th Amendment, but also created unnecessary cost to taxpayers in order to implement

that your identification has been approved by the TSA and your identity has been verified. There are also new requirements put in place to obtain an ID or license; all applicants must present the following documents during the application process: • A photo ID, or non-photo ID that contains the applicant’s full legal name and birth date

the change.

It wasn’t until this year that the federal government announced that all states would need to be in compliance with the REAL ID Act by the end of 2017.

How IDs Will Be Affected The REAL ID Act sets forth new federally mandated requirements for all state driver’s licenses and ID cards.

The D e p a r t m en t of Homeland Security (DHS) has set standards not entirely dissimilar from the requirements already in place for most states throughout the country. On each ID, the following information must be present: • Full legal name • Residential address • Birth date • Gender • Driver’s license/identification card number • Digital front-facing photograph • Signature Driver’s licenses and IDs must now also include a common barcode and security devices to prevent any tampering with or counterfeiting of the card, and must display a star in the upper right-hand corner, signifying 46 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Winter 2017

• Valid birth certificate • Social Security number • Proof of legal U.S. citizenship, OR proof of lawful admittance into or temporary residence within the U.S. Lastly, each state must also agree to share its database of licensed citizens and drivers with all other states, including every piece of data on the cards themselves (name, address, birth date, etc.), along with all driving records and driver histories of everyone licensed to drive in the state.

The Pros and Cons of REAL ID Proponents of the REAL ID Act cite its advantages to national security. These measures ensure that non-citizens are unable to obtain a state-issued ID or driver’s license, and also prevent anyone

without one from boarding aircraft or entering high-security locations.

Similarly, these IDs would place the United States in the company of nearly 100 other countries in the world (including most European countries) that have some form of a national ID card.

Cost, Freedom, and Privacy Concerns However, many states oppose the implementation of the REAL ID Act based upon the estimated cost.

The Act is a unfunded mandate, meaning that while the requirement is federally issued, the entire cost of recreating and re-issuing millions of licenses and ID cards would fall solely upon the states – without any financial assistance from the federal government. States are therefore required to raise their licensing fees in order to make up the added cost… putting an extra financial burden upon the licensee, who may simply be attempting to transfer one valid license into the REAL ID format.

Once the Act is fully implemented, residents without the new mandated ID will also be barred from boarding airplanes, entering nuclear facilities, and performing any other actions that require “official” federal identification.

Citizens will need to provide a valid U.S. passport or permanent residency card in place of the new ID. Another major concern is the idea of personal information being gathered and stored into what some are calling a “national database.” In order for the DHS and TSA to validate a citizen’s identity, they need to collect and store the information that otherwise would be solely kept by individual states.

Many are worried about the “Big Brother”-esque implications this may have to personal privacy.

Major Effects Upon Immigrants Immigrants and foreign nationals working in the United States are

similarly worried about how the REAL ID Act may affect their abilities to live and work within the country. As the requirements for obtaining a new ID card are much more stringent than what some states may currently employ, foreigners without legal proof of entry into the country or without a Social Security number will be barred from obtaining a driver’s license, limiting their means of travel throughout country by a huge margin and possibly forcing them to return to their home country to renew their ID. Then again, supporters of the REAL ID Act cite this as an example of the system working properly, as it ensures that the only people working and traveling within the U.S. are those that the government has officially allowed to be here. 

by Condé Nast Traveler Have a Sunset Strategy “The sunset is everyone’s favorite thing to photograph, so it can be a challenge to make your shots stand out,” says Eric Rubens. “When shooting at the beach, the key is to check the tides and check the skies. Low tides mean access to remote parts of the coast that most people can’t get to. This is when you’ll find those hard to reach coves and caves that will give you some really unique perspectives. Then I check the clouds. Wispy clouds emphasize color much better than a clear sky will. So if you see low tides and a sky full of wispy clouds, get your camera out, because you’re looking at the winning recipe for a great sunset shot.”

Get to Know the Locals “Whether it’s capturing portraits of your new acquaintances or getting the local scoop on secret spots, communicating with strangers can lead to a whole host of photographic opportunities,” says Chase Guttman, three-time Young Photographer of the Year and author of The Handbook of Drone Photography. So how should you make that first connection? Guttman suggests opening in a language that everyone understands. “A smile goes a long way in breaking the ice and relating to someone in a foreign environment.”

Forget the ‘Perfect Shot’ It took German photographer Daniel Ernst nineteen months, seven countries, and a one-way ticket to New Zealand to finally “learn to stop worrying about the perfect shot.” Ernst, who is self-taught and has nearly half a million Instagram followers, says allowing for flaws in exposure, grain, or flare is what makes an image feel more real. “Once I let go of this pressure to be perfect, my shots became instantly better and more authentic.”

Learn to Love Your Own Backyard “You don’t have to go overseas to practice travel photography,” says Lauren Bath, Australia’s first professional Instagrammer. “I was born in Australia but never appreciated the beauty of my own country until I

started to travel it with a camera. Now an old barn I’ve driven past a hundred times could make for a great shot of the Milky Way and morning dew a chance to pull out my macro lens. Just open your eyes and let your camera guide you.”

It’s All About Perspective “I think it’s very easy for an amateur photographer to come to a travel destination and capture a particular attraction from a default position,” Guttman says. “Often times, the difference between a shot that we’ve seen before and one we haven’t is a matter of a few feet. Play with angles: Lying in the grass and shooting upward to accentuate the height of an object or climbing and shooting downward to contextualize your subject are just two examples of how to effectively employ perspective.”

Go With the Flow “Landscape, travel, and adventure photography are all a bit of ‘you don’t know what you’re going to get,’” says Ernst, who has shot for the official tourism boards of Finland, Canada, and the Faroe Islands. “Conditions can be unpredictable, hiking trails may be closed and severe weather might limit what you can do. The best plan is to be open and take it easy.” One of his most cherished shots was the result of a happy accident: “Some friends and I had planned to go climbing, but the morning was so foggy I was afraid it would be pointless. Sure enough, when we got to the top there was nothing to look at. We were just about to go back down when the clouds suddenly cleared, revealing this beautiful, hazy light playing off of the mountain. I quickly snapped the shot, and to this day its one of my favorite photos I’ve taken.”

3 Steps to Becoming a Better Photographic Storyteller

I

f you’ve ever heard people talk about photos that tell a story, you may have wondered to yourself exactly how one tells a story with a single photo. It’s a logical thing to ponder; of course you can’t embody exposition, complication and resolution in one image, but a single image can definitely convey character, setting and plot, thus telling a story.

The following tips will be helpful particularly to budding street photographers but shooters of all stripes will hopefully find something of value here as you endeavor to successfully tell a story via photographic imagery.

Compose Wisely When you’re shooting in a rapidly changing, unpredictable environment you shouldn’t expect to always come away with photos that perfectly conform to the traditional rules. In fact, if there’s one genre in which unorthodox composition is more likely to be appreciated it’s street photography. This doesn’t mean you can throw composition to the wind altogether; rather, you should concern yourself more with how effectively you’re using the space within the frame. The best stories are successful, in large part, because they are streamlined — they don’t contain any unnecessary or distracting elements. A photo that intends to tell a story should, likewise, be free of distractions. Make sure your subject is placed prominently in the scene and don’t include more supporting elements than are absolutely necessary. Less, in this case, is definitely more.

Choose Strong Subject Matter Ideas about what constitutes a strong subject can vary greatly from one person to the next. My advice is quite simple: shoot what you like. When you’re genuinely interested in a subject, you won’t find it too difficult to treat the subject in a dignified manner and your passion will resonate with the viewer. Perhaps it’s easiest to make people the focal point of your storytelling; if you have a deep interest in the human condition, you won’t have much trouble conveying the story of each individual you photograph. Animals, however, may be you preferred subject matter — the point is, it doesn’t matter. Shoot what you love and your love will be revealed in your work.

Be Evocative

Part of telling a good story is eliciting an emotional response in the viewer. Joyous occasions are, of course, a part of most people’s lives and mundane moments are a part of many more; happy and ordinary moments can indeed make for intriguing expository photos when handled properly. Conflict and tension, however, tend to produce more earnest reactions in people. This doesn’t mean your photos have to revolve around themes of violence or anything extreme, it just means you need to put the drama front and center.

Simple gestures — a pointing finger, arms extended to embrace, virtually any manner of body language, in fact — communicate drama beautifully and it prompts the viewer to use their imagination to expand upon the story.

Final Thoughts There is no doubt that good storytelling in photography is challenging, but if this is your goal the thoughts presented above will hopefully provide something of an outline to follow as you embark on your journey to tell incorporate interesting stories into your photography. The biggest mistake one can make in this process is to become overly ambitious. Sure, creativity is at the center of everything here, but I think it bears reiterating the mantra to keep it simple. Think of a book you read or a movie you watched and felt like there was far too much going on. That’s exactly what you don’t want. Book a Hotel Room Using Amazon Alexa and Kayak

ince last May, users of Amazon’s intelligent personal assistant, Alexa, have been able to realize their idle travel daydreams by searching for flights, hotels, and rentals cars through Kayak by simply speaking out loud to the talkative, robot cylinder in their living rooms. Now, the partnership has reached new heights, adding the ability to book a hotel room using nothing but your voice and a functioning Amazon Echo.

As Matthias Keller, Kayak’s chief scientist tells Condé Nast Traveler, while the prior functionality left users essentially anonymous, the new ability to link your Alexa and Kayak accounts means “Alexa knows who you are, when your next trip is, or what time your flight is,” and stores all the information in your Kayak account—credit cards and reward memberships, for example—so that you can simply tell Alexa to book your hotel and go on with your day.

The service works in two ways: If you’re traveling, but haven’t booked accommodation, you can tell Alexa your destination and dates and it’ll list options out loud, including room type and general location. When you hear something you like, you ask Alexa to book, and confirmation will appear in your inbox or in your Kayak Trips account. But the real utility is for the frequent return visitor—that person who goes to the same city again and again and wants to stay in the same place. In that instance, just ask, for example, “How much is a room at the Omni Parker House?” and a few commands later, you’ll be ready to tell your little helpful robot to book it for you.

While you can book hotels today, flights aren’t quite there yet for Alexa. As Keller, explains, flights entail “more regulatory requirements, disclaimers that need to be displayed, security issues, and restrictions around payment methods.” That doesn’t preclude them from the future, though. “We hope that with hotel booking we can make that first big shift to becoming transactional on voice at all,” Keller says.

Flights, car rentals, and integration with the new Echo Show (which includes a screen that would add the vital visual component to the booking process) are all next-up on the docket.

Of course, Kayak isn’t the only travel service toying

with artificial intelligence as a travel planning tool: Booking.com offers a digital travel assistant that will plan your Paris trip for you, and apps like Lola are using A.I. to create a digital, 21st-century travel agent. But Kayak’s latest offering shows booking is moving toward a future where you’ll use only speech commands. Keller doesn’t shy away from dreaming big, either.

“Everything we have available right now is still very, very early—they’ve only been around for a year or two,” says Keller. “This is just the beginning right now—in a few years, it’s all going to be much more seamless. ust past TSA security in John F. Kennedy Airport’s Terminal 4, as most passengers are funneling down the stairs, into the world of duty free and “I Love New York” hats, in-the-know passengers from all cabins are turning left, heading for the Etihad Airways Premium Lounge. And while this lounge was originally designed exclusively for high-flying first- and business- class passengers, it’s now accessible to all guests flying on the airline—if they’re willing to pay, that is. But Etihad isn’t the only one. Lucky for you, paid lounge access options for passengers from all cabins is the new trend in flying.

Why are airlines doing this?

Airlines have built grand airport lounges, and often find them far under capacity. To offer increased options to their economy passengers while increasing their revenue, airlines are now offering the opportunity to purchase “one off” access to these swanky spaces. Once you’ve paid your way in at the door, you receive the same perks: free drinks, food, Wi-Fi, seating and other facilities as those passengers traveling in first or business class. As far as the airport experience goes, it’s about as refined as it gets.

And which airlines are doing it?

In addition to Etihad, Delta, United, American, Turkish, and Emirates are among those offering paid lounge access to passengers. The “big three” American carriers—Delta, United, and American—each charge $59 for a one-day pass domestically, which can be purchased

at the lounge checkin desk at various locations across the U.S. F o r t h e i r lounge locations worldwide, Etihad charges $75, while Emirates offers business class lounge access in Dubai for $100, and access to their absurdly nice First Class Lounge for $200. Countless other airlines and alliances— including Air China, Lufthansa, Turkish, and SkyTeam—offer paid access to economy passengers via apps like LoungeBuddy and Priority Pass, which offer instant paid access to lounges for anyone with a cell phone and an airline ticket; these options start at just $15.

It can be. Assessing value for one of these lounges is based on the individual lounge itself, your tendencies for consumption, and how much you value peace and quiet, away from the terminal. The Etihad Airways JFK Premium Lounge, for example, has complimentary champagne, destinationthemed cocktails, à la carte dining, shower facilities, plush leather sofas, and speedy Wi-Fi. To personally asses value, consider time you’ll spend in the airport and prices for things you would generally consume outside an airport lounge—think unlimited Wi-Fi and a $14 sandwich. Cruise the Kenya Coast The Essence

hows are traditional wooden sailing vessels originally built for carrying exotic spices and goods along the Indian Ocean trade routes.

The Enasoit Dhow, ‘Tusitiri’, has been carefully restored and is today a majestic and comfortable vessel.

Tusitiri has ventured as far south as the Quirimbas archipelago in northern Mozambique, but is usually based in Lamu, where the archipelago is ideal for sailing and adventure.

Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sense of living history pervades the islands. Well off the beaten tourist track, the archipelago offers many opportunities for adventure and fun, and Tusitiri provides a charming and unusual base for exploring the area and enjoying the activities available.

Tusitiri offers guests an unusual and enchanting combination of simplicity and indulgence, customized for Western guests while remaining traditional in design and spirit. Getting Here The Enasoit Dhow, Tusitiri, is located in Lamu, on the north Kenyan coast. The easiest way to reach Tusitiri is by air, and there are two options: • Charter flight by helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft to Lamu • Daily schedule flights from Nairobi (and selected other domestic airports) to Lamu. During Tusitiri’s operating season the Kenya coast is hot and mainly dry. Clothing should be light-weight, with a sweater or wrap for the cooler evenings. Visitors are encouraged to cover their arms, legs and shoulders when visiting towns or villages in this mainly Muslim area and should bring sun-glasses, sun block, a hat, swim wear, shorts, long sleeved shirts, and shoes that may be worn in the water.

Foods of Rwanda

nown as the “land of a thousand hills,” Rwanda is a mountainous country, bordering on Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Rwandan food is neither spicy nor hot. People eat simple meals made with locally grown ingredients. The Rwandan diet consists mainly of sweet potatoes, beans, corn, peas, millet, plantains, cassava, and fruit.

Many Rwandan men enjoy drinking beer, but women rarely drink alcohol in any form. They do drink tea with lots of milk and sugar.

Refusing to partake of offered food or drink is considered a grave insult. Hosts typically sip from drinks and taste the food first before passing them to the guests to show that they are safe for consumption and have not been poisoned.

Kachumbari (salad)

Ingredients: 2 very thinly sliced small onions 5 thinly sliced tomatoes 1 red chilli, cut lengthways into 5 strips a handful of finely chopped fresh coriander 3 tbsp olive oil juice of 1 lime Cayenne pepper for garnish salt and freshly-ground black pepper.

Directions: Layer the tomatoes, chilli, coriander, and sliced onions in a large serving

bowl. To this add a mixture of the lime juice and olive oil then season with salt and black pepper. Lastly sprinkle a little cayenne pepper and serve.

Kachumbari

Rwandan Beef Stew

Ingredients: 900 g stewing beef 1 chopped onion 3 large green plantains 2 tbsp groundnut oil 4 tbsp of freshly-squeezed lemon juice 2 tsp salt bouillon cube 1 large blanched, peeled, de-seeded and coarsely chopped tomato 1/4 tsp freshly-ground black pepper Directions: Brown the beef and onions in oil using a heavy casserole over gentle heat, Add plantain slices that have been rubbed in lemon juice, Cook this for 5 minutes while stirring constantly, Add the remaining ingredients thereafter and add enough water to cover, Keep adding water where necessary till the meat is tender, Serve while still hot with Rwandan rice.

Rwandan Honey Bread Ingredients: 1 packet of active dry yeast 1 egg 4-5 cups of plain flour 3/4 cup lukewarm milk 1/2 cup honey 3/4 cup lukewarm water 6 tablespoons of melted butter 1 tablespoon ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground cloves Directions: Preparing the dough Put the lukewarm water in a jug and sprinkle the yeast sachet on top. Leave for 2-3 minutes, then stir thoroughly. Leave the mixture to stand somewhere warm for around 5-10 minutes until you can see bubbles forming and the mixture looks like it’s expanding a little.

While you’re waiting, mix together the honey, egg and spices in a bowl until combined. Add the lukewarm milk, yeast mixture and two-thirds of the butter. Mix well then begin to add the flour, keeping your touch light.

Kneading the dough Once the dough has come together, remove from the bowl and, on a wellfloured surface, combine it with most of the flour – you’re looking for a light, soft dough that isn’t too wet, but you

may not need all of your flour, so go slowly. If you get lots of dough on your hands, add a little flour to your palms and rub them together briskly until the dough falls off.

Knead the dough using floured hands (and once it needs no more flour, buttered hands) for around ten minutes, until it is springy and smooth – this stage is really important, because by doing this you’ll wake up the gluten strands, which is what will your bread an ace texture. Baking This bread can be baked in lots of different types of tins. Use 3×5 inch round tins to get three fat little loaves, an 8inch round tin or a large loaf tin for one large loaf. Alternatively, you can use a large round oven dish, such as a Le Creuset. Butter the tin or dish with the remaining butter and pop your dough inside – fill each one around half full.

Cover the tin with a clean tea towel and allow to rise in a nice warm place for at least an hour – you want the dough to have risen almost to the top of the tin. Don’t scrimp on this stage, as even rising is important!

“Agatogo” with Collard Greens

Ingredients: vegetable oil 1 large onion, chopped 5 cloves garlic, sliced 6 oz can tomato paste 4 mostly green plantains 3 cups of thinly sliced, loosely packed collard greens (about 1/3 of a bunch) 1 quart vegetable broth (or water) 1/2 cup peanuts, measured then ground oil and salt 89 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL |Winter 2017

“Agatogo” with Collard Greens Directions: 1. Cut the plantain in hunks, then slit along the side one time to make it easier to crack the peel back (may need to use a paring knife to help if the plantain is really green).

2. Fry the onion in vegetable oil until soft, then add in the garlic and continue cooking until the onions are just beginning to color. Add on the tomato paste, give a good stir, then toss on the plantains, greens.

3. Mix in the vegetable broth. Add salt to taste. Simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, or until the plantains are tender and no longer white. Then sprinkle on the crushed peanuts.

4. Add broth or water, until you find the ideal consistency.

outh Sudan is the most underdeveloped region of the world today. 85% of the population in South Sudan is illiterate. Only about 7% of teachers in the south have any professional training, and it is not uncommon to visit a school where the teachers themselves have not been educated beyond fourth grade. Some 1.5 million children who should be in school are not, due to lack of schools. The majority of schools that do exist consist of a chalkboard under a tree. he Southern Sudan Literacy Project (SSLP) is designed to build a Primary school in Dongchak Payam, Duk County, Southern Sudan. Solomon Awan, who was one of the “Lost Boys from Sudan,” now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He desires to help the village he is from, Duk Padiet. Villagers are just now returning after so many years of war and genocide. During the Spring of 2008, Solomon traveled back to his home village where he was reunited with his mother and sister. He met with the village community and agreed that the education of their children is the most critical need. We hope to finish building the school before the 2011 rainy season. To further this goal, SSLP has partnered with Hope Alliance, allowing our donors the benefit of a tax deduction.
