Publisher’s Opinion When I was child, it was not within my understanding all the complexities that would come to consume all of our lives. I mean who would have thought we would still be seeking external solutions to all of our internal problems. I wonder can we solve our own problems. In our collective lifetime we have gone from civic pride by an embarrassment of riches. I mean we’ve blessed with men and women the like of which we may not ever see again. Imagine growing up seeing and hearing the names of W E B DuBois, Fredrick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, James Baldwin, Martín Luther King Jr., Clayton Powell, Thomas Bradley, Sonya Sanchez, Ozzie Davis and Malcom X, Miles Davis, Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Muhammad Ali, Carl Lewis, Quincy Jones, David Dinkins, Andrew Jackson, Ben Carson just to name a few. It is not my goal to belittle the names and faces of today but let’s keep it real. Our community was tight. We lived and breathed as a community. We watched each other grow and we had each other’s back. We worshipped together in Baptist, Methodist or Episcopal churches, mosque from the east coast to west coast from Georgia to Texas and from Philadelphia to St. Louis. We celebrated one another. So what happen? Is it as simple as the pursuit of materialism without shame for how we obtain material success? Are we comfortable with obtaining success by any means necessary? Do we have a standard for educational excellence? The simplest blame is always to point at some else. I mean if we continue to blame someone else, we will never have to accept responsibility for our collective failures. Yes, despite our individual successes, we are failing. Let’s examine the oblivious, our community from coast to coast continues to be decimated by murder from within not from lynching but from bullets. Google places like Camden NJ or Philadelphia, PA, Trenton, NJ or Detroit, MI and you’ll find an alarming murder, dropout, and teen pregnancy rate that impact the future direction of our community in ways that you and I would never imagine. Now is the time to reexamine our approach to responsibility within our community. Do we lead or follow? Do we manage our school district? Do we hold teachers, parents, students and politicians accountable? Are we reinvigorating our own neighborhood? Are our best and brightest opening up business in own neighborhoods or are they moving away to gentrified neighborhoods? Why? Is it the trash or is it just easier to follow rather than lead. I guess the question is very simple, is it easier to move to a nicer neighborhood with a nicer school district rather than to stay and fight or just be content to be one of those people on social media whining about the good old day. 8 urban suburban magazine.com Philadelphia

Self Improvement Tips O

pening yourself up through meditation can be a powerful experience that leads to better and more positive results for you. As we journey through life, many of us will receive some kind of self improvement advice from other people that seem to be successful and happy with their own lives. We may not fully appreciate or even accept their advice, no matter how thoughtful their intentions might be. It’s also been suggested, even if the self-improvement advice is good, rely on your own judgments. Often, the question still remains, how will you know which direction to take or what are the best options for you? Sometime during your life, maybe as a younger person or even older, there’s going to be a certain point when you will have to make a tough decision. Not just an ordinary decision, but one that will affect your life and change it forever. There will also be many moments in your life when you feel alone, unsure of yourself and confused. At this point, some kind of self-improvement advice would probably be helpful, at least for pointing you in the right direction. The easiest self-improvement advice is something that countless numbers of people find helpful and when performed regularly, produces meaningful and positive results. It’s simply called meditation. If you’ve read any sort of history going back through the ages, many civilizations relied upon some form of meditation. From early Greek history through Roman expansion and on up through today, meditation has been used, not only by leaders and scholars, but by average people as well. To begin meditation, locate a place where you can have the least amount of noise and disruption. It will be hard for you to concentrate on your feelings if you are also having to deal with constant distractions. Next, silently talk to yourself and ask questions that will open up your inner self. These questions will give you an opportunity to ascertain who you are. The questions should associate

feelings and pertain to things in your life, for example:

Who are you? What makes you different from everyone else? What moment in your life was the most happiest time for you? Is money the leading factor in your life? How do others influence your decisions? What have you always wanted to do, but never took the chance? Which do you consider to be important in your life, family or work? If one thing in your life stands out above everything else, then focus your questions and attention on that subject. Let your feelings come forward and if you end up being confused, concentrate your thoughts on the basic things that happen during an individual’s lifetime. Remember, nobody else will know your thoughts, be honest with yourself. What do you want from life? That’s what your questions should help you to discover. Your answers will help you to interpret what you truly want from life. Meditating takes time and total concentration, something you will not achieve overnight. For some people, meditation is a simple process of their lives. For others, it may take some time to analyze and even discover certain feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction in their lives. That’s where this form of self-improvement advice can help you to understand and realize more positive results in your life.

IF YOU WALKED IN MY SHOES by Gwynne Forester

The national bestselling author of Blues from Down Deep and When Twilight Comes delivers a moving and powerful story, one that Robert Fleming says is “the one we’ve been waiting for... her best work to date.” At age seventeen, Coreen Holmes was an honor student and the recipient of a full college scholarship when she became victim of a vicious date rape. Fearing her father’s wrath, Coreen is sent to a relative’s house--with her mother’s consent--until she’s able to delivery the baby. A cruel woman, Coreen’s aunt emotionally and physically abuses her; relieved when the baby is born so she can finally leave her aunt’s home, Coreen gives the baby up for adoption and in her haste, knows nothing about the child--even its own gender. Thirty years later, as an adult, Coreen Holmes Treadwll is married and the mother to two stepsons; now head of a social welfare agency and an expert on the welfare of women and girls, she is distressed at the prospect of appearing a friendly witness before a senate investigating committee. Fearful that her past will be exposed--something her family knows nothing about--Coreen must deal with her past head on, before it’s too late.

Natural Health for African Americans: The Physicians’ Guide by Marcellus A. Walker and Kenneth B. Singleton

This book is devoted to the health concerns of particular importance to African-Americans such as heart disease & diabetes. And our health status is getting worse. While the health profile of other ethnic groups is improving, the prognosis for African Americans is deteriorating. A study reported that the gap in the life expectancy between blacks and whites grew in the late 1980s. Since the turn of the century, life expectancy at birth in the United States has generally increased for all races. But from 1984 to 1989 life expectancy for whites increased, while life expectancy for blacks decreased. Never before had this pattern occurred in the United States over a sustained period. Why? For black males, the most significant factors were an increase in HIV infection and homicide. For black females, the spread of HIV infection, diabetes, and pneumonia contributed to the death toll.

The Real Nitty-Gritty by Jil M. Ross

Jil Ross created The Shenanigans Series™ as a result of not being able to find relevant, challenging and thought provoking books that featured African Americans, when my two children became interested in reading chapter books. All of the stories that I write are inspired by true events, and although the stories are told with humor, they’re also grounded in moral lessons.

Exercise Tips - How To Exercise The Right Way By Marc R. Ouellette Exercise should be part of your lifestyle. There are many benefits of making exercise part of your daily workout routine. Please check out these helpful hints. Cardiovascular exercises are important for many reasons. Cardio helps the lungs and heart stay strong. Also cardio aids in weight loss by burning calories and sweating off pounds. I strongly recommend cardiovascular exercise in your workout routines. Another exercise I would add is strength training to the person’s workout routine. Strength training has many benefits that include building muscle and weight loss. Lifting weights is one of the best exercises you can do to get stronger and build muscle. It’s a must if the individual wants that ripped look. If the person is looking to boost their metabolism, then exercise will help. You can change your metabolism with weight training, cardio, aerobics, walking and anything that gets you moving. No matter what you read or hear there is no magic pill to boost metabolism. Just hard work and watching what you eat.

Eating the right foods is also very important. Proper foods aid in fueling your body for exercise. Without a healthy diet the person will not have the energy to put in a workout routine. The body needs protein and carbohydrates and good fats to stay healthy. Also after your workout it’s important not to eat junk food. I would not recommend you go order a big mac or foods that are high in fat. Chicken, fish and turkey are an excellent choice of foods for after exercising. I also like to drink a protein shake after exercise. Protein powder is not expensive, and can be mixed with almost anything. I like to drink water during my exercise routine. It helps in dehydration. I think people should drink water during and after exercise. It also helps in losing weight. If you are looking to lose weight drink lots of water. It is very important to stretch your muscles before and after you workout. For people who workout in the morning it is a must that you stretch your muscles. This will prevent injury and aid in muscle growth. Always think safety first and your body will reward you. Please make sure you do not overwork your body. s move through the last quarter of 2013, it’s really already time to start thinking about 2014. I want to challenge you not to have the same old thoughts and set the same old goals – both of which usually fall apart somewhere between December 26th and January 5th of every year. Promise yourself that this year you’re going out with a B.A.N.G. and that same B.A.N.G. is going to propel you all the way through 2014! Why make this promise to yourself? Because you and your innermost promises, goals, and dreams should be the most important things to you! Additionally, your word should be your bond that is never broken!

Many people tell themselves they are going to do better financially in the New Year. However, most people don’t know what they need to do to make that happen, so they either do

nothing or keep doing what they’ve been doing. B.A.N.G. is your master financial plan that starts today and comes with an unconditional guarantee that 2014 will end much better than the last few years if you keep your promise to yourself and B.A.N.G. your way through!

B.A.N.G.

B is for budget.

Yeah! Yeah! Not only have you heard it before but you hate it too! Trust me that I really do know that! However, the more you budget and stick with it, the more money you will start to have – my promise to you! Go to my website right now: www.MoneySmartBook.com and download the spending plan template from the Free Downloads page. A spending plan is a written plan on how you will spend your money, which is the same as a budget. The first time you fill out the template you will probably have a negative number at the bottom, which is fine. Keep track of every penny you spend and complete a new spending plan every time you get paid. Make adjustments and changes each time so that if you had a negative number at first, you work towards only spending what you make. Once the money coming in equals the money going out, the next set of adjustments will allow you to spend less money than what you bring in! When that happens, presto! …you have extra money for your savings account! You are now moving toward making your innermost promises, goals, and dreams into a reality!

B.A.N.G.

A is for Action.

Part of keeping your promise to yourself so that your innermost promises and goals start to urban suburban magazine.com Philadelphia 41

come true, is to keep taking massive, immediate, and ongoing action on your budget. This is especially important during those months when you had unexpected expenses like brakes, tires, or extra prescriptions to fill. Ongoing action also means passing up that killer outfit that’s on sale, and going into the back of your closet instead to dig out one of those “other” killer outfits that still have the tags on them and then strutting the heck out of it! Understand that it’s the massive, immediate, and ongoing action on your budget and your willpower that will transform your finances in 2014 – if you start today! Today is the “immediate” part. No more procrastination is allowed here!

B.A.N.G.

N is working to Never give up spirit, attitude, and mindset!

Sometimes our negative self-talk gets us into trouble. Making it all the way through 2014 to end it with a financial B.A.N.G. is going to be tough, but definitely well worth it! To develop a never give up spirit, attitude, and mindset, you must read personal development websites, articles, and magazines. These resources become the mental vitamins you need to keep you strong and able to take the massive, immediate, and ongoing action to make your B.A.N.G. happen! B.A.N.G. G is goal setting. The next step in changing your financial future is to write down both your short-term and long-term financial goals. Ask yourself what is your B.A.N.G. going to allow you to accomplish in 2014? What do you want to accomplish by 2017 (in the next 3 years) and by 2019 (the next 5 years)? After you write your goals down, take the time to make a bullet list under each goal of things you need to do to reach that goal. If you only focus doing what’s on the bullet list, you will reach your goals! As with anything else in life, without written financial goals and specific plans for meeting them, we drift along and leave our future to chance. A wise man once said: “most people don’t plan to fail; they just fail to plan.” The end result is the same: failure to get your finances where you want them to be…but making your B.A.N.G. happen changes that! There is a lot of meat in this article that you really need to take Action on today (immediately!) to put yourself in the position for big changes in your life in 2014 that will bring you happiness and a strong sense of accomplishment. The next article will follow up on this article with additional information to help you keep your B.A.N.G. going to

blue without competing for the spotlight. After all, the dress is the star.

by Holly Lane Mixon Electric Blue also known as cobalt blue, royal blue or Monaco blue, is this Autumn/Winter 20132014’s hot trending color. It’s everywhere on the runways and filling retail stores as we speak. Cobalt blue is a rich and vibrant hue that can be incorporated into day or night attire, from a small addition such as an accessory to a show stopping dress or coat. Shades of cobalt will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Cobalt blue has also dominated the runways of menswear this season. For guys who find that Navy is their go-to blue, be adventurous, and try the brighter blue option in blazers, backpacks, belts, t-shirts or even watches. We aren’t encouraging a head to toe blue look, instead, choose one piece to build your outfit around.

Pair with bold prints. This trend works well with houndstooth, animal prints or your favorite geometric pattern.

The smoke hazes the stage as the Acapulco Gold fitted cap and Ray-Ban shades appear; “emphatically Sugar’s here !!!,” says the MC. Reciting a verse from the song “Illustrious” off the mixtape titled “The Illustrious” Sugar, or Slim as friends know him, waves to the crowd as he confidently walks off stage as the opening act at an recent Kavinsky show in New York City. There is an aura of intrigue about the Atlanta born lyricist. His voice is as unique the flow with which he chooses his words. He credits his love of words from his passion for poetry. Slim began his career as a slam poet in Atlanta’s underground that served as training camp prepping this aspiring poet’s arrival in the “City of Brotherly Love”. “Philadelphia and Atlanta are cities where if the football teams are doing well then the city is a better place, others sports are cool but football is king. That and the musical scene kept me here, Philly is a special place man.” Slim definitely holds a connection to the two cities and his evolving body of work musically speaks to his work eithic, His GoldRush mixtape series encompasses homebase production from Mp3,Schoolie V and Bear-one in addition to having worked with noteworthy producers Jazzy Jeff, Dre & Vidal, Alchemist and Will Power. FedUp-4U is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2009 with the mission to reach the youth and steer them away from drugs, gangs, bullying, teen pregnancy, and any of the other forms of negativity that are running rampant in our streets. FedUp-4U’s core

service consists of conducting school assemblies that are informative, relatable, and engaging. Agenda items for the assemblies are comprised of motivational speaking from mentors, motivational speaking from local athletes and/or politicians, and musical performances that are always a sure fire way to keep the children engaged. The success of the assemblies can be attributed to the fact that FedUp-4U purposely employs individuals whom the youth look up to and are able to relate to. FedUp-4U’s founder, Mr. James Cooper, is a reformed drug kingpin who was overwhelmed by the amount of gangs and violence in his hometown when he returned home from prison. Having been part of the drug game in the past, he felt that he was in a unique position to be able to reach at-risk youth and help them turn their lives around. FedUp-4U’s pilot program was offered to children as young as six years of age and as old as nineteen years of age. The 8-week program provided free transportation, free healthy meals, and core lifestyle classes. The children were encouraged to really get engaged in the program by being appointed junior and senior mentors when warranted, being rewarded with recognition, and by having a daily circle of friends and prayer engrained into their daily activities. Once the children finished all of the program’s required curriculum for the day they were then permitted recreation time in the large gymnasium. The first FedUp-4U graduation class began with 75 children and ended with 77 graduates. The following year 350 children applied, but due to limited funding the program was only able to accept 225 participants.

46 urban suburban magazine.com Philadelphia

Currently, FedUp-4U is focusing on reaching the youth by hosting assemblies in public and private schools across the nation. With his background, Cooper is the main motivational speaker on the roster but is supported by others. FedUp-4U has also successfully partnered with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for outreach programs in

the past. In a typical year FedUp-4U hosts about 75 assemblies per year in various schools across the nation. The importance of the availability of quality programs like FedUp-4U for our youth is at an all-time high. Statistics from The National Education Association show that one in three American children in grades six through ten are affected by bullying. Students who are targets of repeated bullying have a fear of going to school and engaging in ordinary activities like using the restroom and riding the school bus. The American Justice Department reports that only 58% of children actually notify an adult after they have become a victim of bullying. Some of these unreported instances of bullying lead to serious issues such as violence, depression, and even suicide. Bullying not only has a negative effect on the victims but it has a negative effect on the perpetrators as well. Bullies are in a high risk category for criminal convictions. Boys identified as bullies in grades six through nine had at least one criminal conviction by age 24. Forty percent of those identified had three or more arrests by age 30. Shockingly, bullies are at even greater risk of suicide than their targets and bullies often grow up to perpetuate family violence. In addition to the startling bullying statistics mentioned, there are countless others relating to drugs, gangs, and teen pregnancy that are mind boggling. The National Institute of Drug Abuse reports that 34% of students in grades 8 through 9 have tried drugs at least once. The National Gang Center reports that approximately 35% of gangs are made up of youth that are age 18 or under and the CDC reports that three out of ten girls in the United States get pregnant at least once by age 20. The evidence clearly shows that our schools are in a state of chaos. In today’s society it seems as though the news is filled with stories detailing the latest school shootings, teen violence/crime, teen pregnancy, etc. In addition, television shows like “Teen Mom” and “The Bad Girls Club” are growing in popularity and the do not give our children a realistic picture of the type of people they should strive to be. We need to get out in front of our children so that they are not led astray. Investing in programs like FedUp-4U is an innovative way to fight back and help our children in the troubling times that we live in. FedUp-4U’s approach is a new and innovative way to reach out to our youth that has proven to be effective and is gaining popularity at a rapid pace. FedUp-4U is currently on a 100 school tour that runs from September 2013 – June 2014. For details on how to get FedUp-4U out to your school or sponsorship opportunities please visit www.fedup4uu.com. Kobalt Books Partners with Dish Network to Launch Faith-Based Web Series With a nationwide distribution deal and a viewership exceeding half-million people for the faith-based film, “Under the Cherry Tree”, it’s no surprise that one of the leading cable providers would take notice. Kobalt Books Entertainment has reached an agreement with Dish Network to launch its web series spin-off, inspired by the movie and novel, “Under the Cherry Tree” in January, 2014. This deal reflects a movement across the country where families are demanding more socially responsible forms of entertainment and an inspirational series that’s not afraid to push the envelope on its message of faith in God. “Our situation is unique in that we are a completely independent operation, meaning that we write, produce and direct our own films. We fund them ourselves, so that allows us the opportunity to create exactly the movie that we want people to see. We don’t have outside forces influencing us to water-down our message,” says Cedric Mixon, writer, director and producer of “Under the Cherry Tree”. The faith perspective is often neglected in entertainment and in every inner city there’s a major family structure that is broken. “Under the Cherry Tree” was filmed in the heart of the inner city for that very reason. With everything from divorce to lack of opportunity, the family is being attacked at the very root. “Under the Cherry Tree”, the Web Series is available for viewing on Dish Network, January, 2014. Skin Edgy yet sophisticated is the trend for fall and as always, I believe it begins with good skin care. Good skin preparation makes for a good makeup application. Nourish the skin from the inside out. Drink lots of water in order to keep the skin hydrated. Exfoliate the skin at least once every week. Cleanse tone and moisturize daily even when wearing no makeup at all. Remove makeup nightly. The skin cell natural reparation process happens at night. Wear a dense moisturizing cream at night to aid in the cycle of repair. This season, Beauty Balms are all the rage. BB creams hydrate, prime, correct, protect and perfect offering flawless bare skin lending to that no makeup makeup look. Remember any liquid or cream should be set with a powder. Translucent or transparent powders are best.

Cheeks Cream blushes are huge this season. While they take a little more time to blend, the final result is amazing. This is one product that I recommend using your fingers to apply. The warmth from your body mixed with the natural oils present in the skin is an awesome combination for use in applying cream blushes. They have a silky texture which blends perfectly with just a hint of color leaving a look of pinched radiance on the skin.

Brows Brow shaping can be tricky but amazing when done correctly. I am not a fan of waxing or threading. I personally use a free hand razor (the kind that barbers use just without the guard) which is not for everybody. I do however, recommend tweezing. To properly shape the brow, place a pencil vertically at your nose. Remove any hairs which extend past the side and any hair in the middle between the two brows, removing all signs of a possible unibrow. Find your natural arch by moving the pencil to where there is a diagonal line from your nose through the center of your iris into your brow ( resembling a “ V” or a slice of pie) Pluck the stray hairs in a diagonal line up to the arch in the direction that the hairs grow. Then taper the brow from the arch to the outside edge. Remember your brows are sisters not twins.

Eyes Create your gorgeous signature look. Try prepared palettes. It is already created for you and is made to work together. Ad a primer for extended wear. For a natural day look use these general steps as a guideline: Light on the lid, contour in the crease by using a darker color to add a bit of depth but not to carry the look too far. Liner smudged into the lash line keeps the look soft. Mascara is the finishing touch that completes the look. To transition this from day to night, add the darkest color in the outside corner to see a gradient effect on the eye. Always remember to blend well so that the colors meld together. Deepen the smudged liner on both the top and bottom. Finally, add a mascara that volumizes and intensifies the lash.

Lips Remember when exfoliating the skin, don’t forget the lips. An easy at home tip: Mix sugar and olive oil to remove the dead skin so that the lip product can then be applied flawlessly. Red will always be a staple. It’s like every woman’s little black dress. Lip products come in many forms. There are matte, glossy, plumping, satin, frost and cream to name a few. Preference is key when choosing lip color. Color payout and finish will influence your choice the most. Smooth, soft, kissable lips are a must, whether you are wearing bright or dark colors. The more you layer, the longer it lasts. Lip primer establishes a foundation on which to build “the perfect lip”. Use lip liner to help prevent feathering. Look for lip products that are hydrating and nourishing. Lastly, if desired apply a gloss to finish the look. Makeup is interpretive. Remember there are no rules… Just have fun!

Healthcare,

Violence and STIS:

Philadelphia youth and the vision of Benjamin Rush.

I have learned so much about not only medicine, but also myself. I discovered that I have a passion for the city. I plan to pursue urban studies and pre-medicine at college. (Karabots Junior Fellow) In the late 18th Century the City of Philadelphia was facing numerous public health challenges. In response to this situation, Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, proposed the formation of a society similar to Royal College of Physicians in London. As a result, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (the College) was founded in 1787 by twenty-four area physicians. These men (yes, they were all men) wanted “to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery” for Philadelphians. In 1793 a yellow fever epidemic broke out in Philadelphia and the Governor and Mayor requested advice from the College on how to handle the dire situation (about 1/10 of the population was to succumb). Rush developed an aggressive approach to treatment proposing extensive bloodletting and administration of large doses of mercury. Thankfully, not all the doctors agreed with him. Historic vision and spirit continues at the College with the current mission: Advancing the cause of health, while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine. 52 urban suburban magazine.com Philadelphia

Over the past five years the College has worked hard to increase engagement with Philadelphia youth, particularly in the area of afterschool and summer programming. In 2009 the Karabots Junior Fellows program was launched, generously funded by The Karabots Foundation. The program uses the vast resources of the College to provide practical assistance, mentoring, and academic and social support to Philadelphia high school students attending public or charter schools who want to pursue careers in the healthcare professions. Most of these students are the first in their families to consider attending college. This is a year-round program focusing on rising sophomore high school students and nurturing them through high school graduation. Students attend classes at the College, participate in fieldtrips, and create exhibits for our world-renowned Mütter Museum. The first group of 24 students, who enrolled in 2009, have completed the program. Twenty-three of them are either in their second year of college or participating in a healthcare training program. Another generous grant enabled us to expand the Teva Pharmaceuticals Summer Internship Program during its fourth year. This program is designed to allow students to explore the impact of violence on themselves and their communities. Through a collaboration between the College’s Mütter Museum and forensic professionals, students utilized the same tools and methods used by professionals as they attempted to solve a fictional violent crime. With this crime as a backdrop, students delved into both the factors that create a culture of violence and the sense of loss faced by communities when loved ones fall prey to violence. Students discussed these topics in a supportive en-

vironment while creating works of video that communicated their thoughts and feelings on these subjects. As in previous years, the feedback on the program was overwhelmingly positive. The students formed bonds with other like-minded individuals from across the City, developing a deeper understanding of their shared experiences. This experience of sharing enabled the participants to begin to overcome the disabling effects of traumatic life events and would help them with decision-making going forward. Many came to believe for the first time that their dreams of College, and future success, were an achievable reality. Another significant public health challenge facing Philadelphia today is the high rate of sexually transmitted infections among the youth population. With generous support form The Barra Foundation this problem is now the focus of the College’s Hip2Know campaign that promotes peer education of youth regarding the personal and community benefits of getting tested for STIs and HIV. The campaign uses music, dance, and social media to help promote this message. Lack of diversity among healthcare providers, neighborhood violence, and sexually transmitted infections are just three of the many health-related challenges facing the City of Philadelphia today. Through its educational programming the College continues to strive to “lessen human misery” just as its founders did more than two centuries ago. We believe that Benjamin Rush would be proud of his legacy! http://www.collegeofphysicians.org/education/

The Urban Dictionary defines ‘swag’ as “the appearance, style, or the way he or she presents themselves”. So when a woman says a man has swag that usually means he has a great deal of confidence in the way he walks, talks and the way he takes over the space he’s in without even trying. I found this topic to be very intriguing so I asked several ladies what was their definition of swag when it comes to men. Every answer took a different route but ended up at the same destination. Every women said swag is the confidence that a man exudes. Check out some of the ladies’ quotes: >>

Angelene, 34, says:

“Swag to me is the way he walks, speaks, and to know when he walks in a room full of people he is confident with sex appeal. Swag to me is not about the way he dresses, or how much money he has, although that can contribute to it. To me it’s mental and once you get my mental you get me!!”

Dasha, 40, says:

“Swag” is the overall confidence a man has and the sex appeal he gives off (without even knowing it). I will use Idris Elba, President Obama and Denzel Washington as references. All 3 of these debonair men represent MY definition of swag. They are attractive, humble and successful men who can attract women of all ages without having to go overboard with their charm.”

Kiwana, 29, says:

“Ok, I don’t like the word swag. ...however I would say it’s a full package deal...confidents.... personality. ..knows what he wants and goes for it...commends respect without even opening his mouth...he could step into a room and own it without even a second thought of what’s going on around him.....when in his present you feel like you are that special someone...and vice versa...”

Keys, 25, says:

“Swag someone who carries themselves extremely well in all aspects. Typically speaking, he got his “ish” together. This man is very confident. Personality is off the chain but very unique. He speaks volumes when he walks in the room of his presence.”

Rondi, 42, says:

“A man with swag has it built into his personality and shows it in his demeanor. He is debonair, respectful, and confident with just a look.”

Tondi, 42, says:

“I love a man with swag! To me swag means a man who is sexy & confident. He can adapt & communicate in any setting. As Angelene stated, his style of dress or money does not have anything to do with it but can be a plus.”

So there you have it folks, all women that were ask, whether they were in their twenties or forties all agree that a man with swag is a man that exudes confidence in every way and everyone around him knows it, in a good way!

As a child, Kurt E. Smith suffered from asthma and eczema. Frequent visits to the doctor

did little to relieve the symptoms. Then Kurt’s mother insisted that the family enhance its vegetarian diet and eventually become fully vegan. The decision would change Kurt’s life. With his conditions nearly gone, Kurt began his lifelong journey in the vegan lifestyle. Growing up, Kurt spent a lot of time in the kitchen watching his mother prepare the family meals. He also learned the importance of nutritional value as she would counsel different guests on healthy eating while offering delicious vegetarian and vegan meals. In time Kurt would become her ‘helper’ in the kitchen, learning to ‘add more of this,’ and ‘less of that.’ It all came in handy when, one morning, his mother was ill and couldn’t get out of bed. Kurt decided to prepare a meal for the two of them. She was astounded. “When he asked if he could fix breakfast, I thought he would make toast or something simple,” she says. “I had no idea he was capable of cooking! After eating the meal, I insisted that he prepare a dish for the women of our church – because they would never believe that he had prepared such a meal without my help.” Kurt did so and became an instant hit. He was just eight years old. Fast forward years later, and Kurt would ‘go off the wagon’ while in college, when he wondered whether he was “cured” of his childhood diseases. Chronic eczema and severe acne soon re-emerged,

and Kurt made the wise decision to return to a full-fledged vegan diet. And that, as they say, was that. The experience led Kurt to research the relationship between foods and their affects on the human body. Soon thereafter, he formed Totally Vegetarian Catering, Inc., and created a buzz that surprised even him. “I always enjoyed vegan food,” says Kurt, “especially because my mother is an excellent cook! But I never expected the results that followed.”

Those results included preparing foods for several high-profile individuals such as neo-soul artist Erykah Badu, singer/songwriter Rochelle Ferrell, record producer and songwriter Kenny Gamble, PA State Senator Vincent Hughes, environmentalist and author of the best-selling food novel “Diet for a New America” John Robbins, rap mogul and entrepreneur Russell Simmons, and former Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street, to name a few. Kurt even had the opportunity to prepare foods for the PETA organization, and The Roots! Certainly, he had arrived. But he takes it all in stride. For Kurt, it’s far more important to continue his journey to become the most noted chef in America, not simply “the vegan chef.” To that end, he continues to build his empire one brick at a time. “Every so often we re-strategize, reorganize, and redevelop our brand,” he says. Such steps include the recent name by which he now calls himself, KESS. “The moniker KESS is just a shortened version of my initials, K. E. S. We added the ‘s’ for emphasis.” The name works. Today, Chef KESS is in high demand from individuals, corporations and celebrity from both the east and west coasts. And word-of-mouth of the vegan chef ’s presentations is as popular as the authentic tastes of his vegan meals. Currently, Chef KESS is on a campaign to emphasize the month of November as National Vegan Month, following October’s National Vegetarian Month. He is also in talks to complete a book of recipes that will complement his life story, and will soon introduce his own YouTube channel in order that others, who are on the path of healthy living, can benefit from his culinary skills. “It’s a great journey for sure,” says Chef KESS. “But…in the end, the mission, the goal, is to urge everyone to live a healthier and happier life through good food.” He certainly has our vote.

TRAVEL Making the Right Buying Decision I overheard this in a conversation between another agent and a client the other day: “I’m not here to sell you a vacation. I’m here to help you make the right buying decision.” Brilliant! And true! Travel prices are usually all the same – you’ll never pay more booking your vacation through me than you’d pay by booking direct or with an on-line travel site. In fact, you’ll sometimes pay less. I don’t charge hefty booking fees to do business, and more often than not my clients are amazed at the tremendous values I can find for them. But, when you work with me, you get, well….ME!!! I’m not happy unless you’re happy! You benefit from my personal relationships.

I may contact a hotel manager personally by phone, email, or Facebook to secure an early check-in, a room upgrade, or a welcome gift. I may have an Ensemble Exclusive rate for your cruise that includes a gift of on-board credit, an invitation to a private cocktail reception, or a complimentary shore event. My relationship with your resort Butler might allow me to complete all your check-in paperwork in advance, arrange for your mini-bar to be stocked according to your preferences, and get dinner reservations, spa appointments, and teetimes in advance so you don’t have to waste a moment of your precious vacation time. But, just as important, you get my experience… my expertise. I help you by asking questions about who you are – your personality, your values. I work to find the tour, hotel, resort or cruise ship that best meets your needs and desires. I take into consideration who is traveling – families, adults only, just you and the one you love - why you’re traveling – business, relaxation, education – when you’re traveling – weather, time of year - and use that information to help you make the right buying decision. You’re not alone. I’m here for you. Give me a try!
