Mindful Meditation and Memory Benefits

Presenter: Dr. Deborah Mizener Dr. Mizener will provide current research findings of various contemplative practices and their benefits to our memory and emotional well-being. She will share the benefits of meditation and draw upon her own personal experience as well. Join Dr. Mizener as she demonstrates simple meditation techniques and basic breathing.

Dr. Deborah Mizener

Dr. Mizener received her Doctorate in Applied Psychology, Counseling from the University of Toronto, Canada. She completed a specialty in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has worked in the field of psychology and education for 30 years as a researcher, psychologist and school counselor in several countries. She attended a Health and Happiness Retreat at the Bodhi Meditation Vancouver where she learned how to deepen her practice.

Nora VanSpeybroeck, MBA

Nora VanSpeybroeck holds a Masters in Business Administration from St. Ambrose University and has vast experience in sales and marketing. She has been an instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) Department and the Business Training Center (BTC) of Black Hawk College for over 19 years teaching computer classes for the public as well as customized training for businesses. She also teaches classes for College for Kids and the Lifelong Learner program.

A Website for Everyone

Presenter: Nora VanSpeybroeck, MBA There is a website for everything. Nora will demonstrate how to search the web and how to navigate various websites such as Shutterfly (image publishing service), Switchboard (internet phonebook), Google maps/Google Earth, etc. Learn how to share your talents on Pinterest or explore travel or art websites. This session will benefit the novice user as well as the experienced one. If you have a Smartphone or iPad/tablet, bring it with you.

Chelsie is a Wellness Coach at UnityPoint Health–Trinity and is certified as a Health Education Specialist through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Health and Human Physiology and received her master’s degree in Health Education from Kaplan University. She values the relationships she builds with her clients and enjoys helping others find happiness by providing the support, education, and resources that are necessary for optimal health and wellness.

Pets - A Positive Impact on Happiness and Health

Presenter: Vicki Nimmo, Volunteer at Caring Canines-UnityPoint Health-Trinity This session is intended to highlight the benefits of pet ownership (with special attention to dogs) for health and happiness. Information about how pet therapy can benefit individuals with health concerns, how dog obedience training can strengthen the pet/owner relationship, and how dog agility offers the option of involvement and health benefits to pets as well as owners.

Presenter: Rev. Fr. Thomas Alatzakis, Proistamenos Join us at the beautiful Assumption Greek Orthodox Church to enjoy a delicious Greek meal and learn about the Greek Orthodox history and traditions. The Great Depression and the Tri-Cities

Presenter: Dr. Maryan Wherry Join us as at The Abbey Station for a look at The Great Depression of the 1930s and the major impact it had on the Twentieth Century. Ration books, unemployment, bank foreclosures and homelessness were common throughout the country and FDR was President from 1933-1945. The Great Depression impacted the entire country. Join us as we take a closer look at the impact it had on the culture, people and events of the Tri-Cities (Davenport, Rock Island and Moline) now known as the Quad Cities. Lifelong Learner Classes Arts & Crafts Techniques and Tips in Watercolor for Beginners Instructor: T. Hempel This class will get you started in watercolor painting by introducing you to brushstroke techniques and color composition. Watercolor is about the fluidity of paint, the texture of brushstrokes and the amount of water. Every technique produces its own unique result. Learn basic watercolor techniques and you’ll be on your way to creating your own original watercolor painting. Basics of Drawing for Beginners

Instructor: A. Martin Have you always wanted to learn how to draw or enjoy drawing but would like some fine-tuning? Then this is the class for you! You will be on your way to creating beautiful works of art with the help of an experienced artist. From beginning to end, each class will teach you techniques and tips for how to bring your ideas to life. Drawing the Face – Creating Self –Portraits/Portraits

Instructor: A. Martin You will learn how to create a self-portrait/portrait. The first few classes will focus on different facial features and the shape of the head. Through learning about light, shading and the correct placement of all the facial features, you will create a unique piece of art. Paint Your Own Holiday Cards in Watercolor

Instructor: S. Larson This holiday season, send out your own artwork! New Step by step, we’ll create three or four small watercolor paintings that are ideal for using as holiday cards. Learn how to make snow glisten on trees and on rooftops. By the end of this class, you’ll have your original artwork reproduced onto cards ready to send. Beginners welcome! Getting Started with Your Computer Workshop

You will learn basic terminology, hardware vs. software and the components of a computer. You will turn on and shut down the computer, learn about various storage devices and media, as well as practice operating the mouse. Windows for Beginners Workshop

Prerequisite: Getting Started with Your Computer Workshop or equivalent experience Level 0 – Learn basic Microsoft Windows skills including how to identify parts of a window and how to manipulate windows and the taskbar. Learn how to see how much space you have available on your hard drive. You will use menus, Help and Support, the calculator, save to a flash drive, open a basic word processing program (WordPad), create a letter, print it and save the file.
