Black Hawk College Professional and Continuing Education is committed to promoting prevention, early identification and intervention as critical parts of overall wellness.

Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, addictions and compulsive behaviors are real, common, and treatable.

The Mind, Body, Spirit Unite Mental Health Wellness Conference is for individuals, families, health professionals and anyone who wishes to explore options for wellness in this evolving mental health field.

Do you want to implement innovative interventions for mental wellness? Then this conference is for you – the parent, the employee, the supervisor, the therapist, the psychologist, the police officer, the teacher, the medical health professional, and the mental health professional.

Join seven engaging presenters – some courageous enough to share their personal journey – to explore depression, healthy eating, meditation, happiness, hypnotherapy, and suicide prevention.

Our presenters are dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness issues and to promoting the overall mental health of people living in the Quad Cities community.

Why attend this conference? This conference will feature prominent speakers from the Quad Cities, sharing practical information for you to put into action, the opportunity to network with professionals, and fellow attendees, earn continuing education credits, and spend a day learning more about mental health wellness.

Who Should Attend: psychologists, therapists, law enforcement officers, counselors, therapists, health care and holistic practitioners, social workers, teachers, school psychologists, and addiction counselors. Family, friends, loved ones and co-workers who are supporting one another suffering from a mental health illness. Anyone, (the general public), curious about or seeking options and solutions to mental health challenges.

Professional Continuing Education Credits (6 hours awarded): You may be eligible for up to 6 hours continuing education credit. Consult your governing rules to determine if appropriate subject matter criteria will apply to credit hours.

She will touch on ways to manage depression, understand the symptoms, available treatment options, and how to understand and cope with the widespread health issue.

11:00 – 11:50 a.m. Mindful Meditation for Youth and Adults Presenter: Stephanie Adamson, LC, LMT, CE, MR, The Institute of Integrative Wellness Join Stephanie as she shares mindfulness meditation, a specific practice called Vipassana, often translated as ‘insight’ or ‘clear seeing’. She will share the health benefits of mindfulness-based stress reduction and demonstrate techniques for beginners.

3:20 – 4:00 p.m. Using the Arts for Healing and Hope Presenter: Kit Evans-Ford, M.Div., MA, BA Kit Evans-Ford will take you on a journey where you tap into your artistic gifts and explore how you can use them to bring healing and hope to the world. Kit will use her story of surviving an extremely violent sexual assault and how the arts became a tool for her own healing journey from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder.

1:00 - 1:30 p.m. Suicide Prevention Presenter: George Smith, Founder of AdamFest According to the CDC, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for all ages.

There is one death by suicide in the US every 12.3 minutes and depression affects 20-25% of Americans ages 18+ in a given year. These statistics may be alarming to some and that is exactly why Mr. Smith speaks out in the community. He personally knows the pain suicide leaves behind and the need to increase awareness and remove the stigma of suicide.

• PaCE stands for Professional and Continuing Education • 2,043 students attended our fall 2015 classes • We coordinate College for Kids • On average, we offer over 1,000 classes each year • Our classes are held at all Black Hawk College facilities as well as various locations throughout the Quad Cities • Our department has been in existence for 47 years.

Instructor: TBA The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Health Care Providers Course to prepare a wide variety of health care professionals to recognize several life-threatening emergencies and to provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The course includes adult, child, and infant skills in both the out-of-hospital and in-hospital settings. Massage Therapists can earn 4 continuing education credits.

Health Care Careers Mental Health Technician Instructor: R. Nelson, MS, BA Job growth expected to be 15% through 2022. (Faster than average.)

This course is open to anyone seeking an entry-level position with the desire to work in the mental health field. It serves to both improve recognition of mental illness and reduce the stigma surrounding it. The course is designed to teach the public or health care personnel basic skills to assist someone who is developing or experiencing a mental health issue. Learn strategies that include understanding of mental disorders, addictive behaviors, psychotropic medications, therapeutic communication, interpersonal communication skills, confidentiality, personal and social boundaries, HIPPA laws, infection control and preparing for employment. Students must create a professional résumé for review by week 8 with assistance from the BHC Career Services Center. Mental Health Technician Certification (CMHT) Exam is available through National Career Certification Board (NCCB).

Prerequisites: Age 18 and GED or high school diploma.

Must pass a background criminal check. Must be free of communicable diseases that pose a significant risk to self, instructor, or peers. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively in a professional manner with staff, colleagues and patients.

*The fee includes the background check. Paperwork for the background check will be given to each student the first night of class.

Why Get Certified: • Demonstrates that you have achieved the entry-level of professional knowledge in your specific field of study.

• Gives you a mark of distinction which sets you apart and shows that you have achieved expertise in your field of study.

• Demonstrates your commitment to your own personal growth and to that of the profession you’ve chosen. These factors can affect your career advancement.

• May encourage your employer to underwrite further education for you in the future. By showing them how supporting your professional development is a worth while pursuit for the company’s continuous improvement efforts, this could lead to further educational opportunities.

Many of the PaCE health care programs offer a certification exam or competency exam after successful completion of the course.

Patient Health Service Professional Instructor: I. Earl, NCMA, AHI, CPI, BS/J. Grice, LPN Job Growth expected to be 10% through 2024 (Much faster than average.)

Represent the front line of the health care service for patients entering a fast-paced practice, hospital, or clinic. You will be introduced to the many roles and responsibilities encompassed by the health professional. Learn the critical components of working in a key role to provide patient registration, medical terminology, basic Spanish speaking skills, patient/ staff relations, insurance forms, confidentiality, patient safety, professional etiquette, and the need for extraordinary customer service skills in stressful situations. This course includes two weeks of basic Spanish speaking instruction.

A professional résumé must be created for review by week 8 with assistance from the BHC Career Services Center.

A Patient Service Professional Competency Exam will be administered.

Prerequisites: Age 18 and GED or high school diploma.

Must be able to follow written and oral instruction, communicate effectively in a professional manner with staff, colleagues and patients, and have the ability to work under pressure. Assisted Living Professional

New

Instructors: J. Massey, LPN, Certified Dementia Care Specialist and Instructor/M. Woelke, LMSW, MAG, Certified Dementia Care Specialist and Instructor Prepare to become an assisted living professional. Emphasis is on providing care to clients living in retirement communities or senior housing complexes where full-time nursing care is not needed, but the individuals may need help with daily tasks such as personal care, transferring, bathing and dressing. It’s important for the assisted living professional to know correct procedure for transferring, bathing, handling medications, ambulation, fall prevention, infection control, recognizing and dealing with dementia, and treating people with dignity and respect.

An Assisted Living Health Care Provider competency exam will be administered.

Dietary Aide Instructor: C. Simonet, FSSMC Job growth expected to be 38% through 2024 (Much faster than average.)

Learn to perform work assignments, diet tickets, proper measuring, sanitation procedures, proper setup for serving residents, and the process for receiving and storing food supplies. Other topics include customer service and preparing for employment. The Food Handler Training course and assessment is included in the course and fee. As an entrylevel dietary aide, you can gain employment in assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes. A professional certificate of completion will be awarded to help graduates prepare for entry-level employment. The Food Handler and Assessment exam and certificate of completion will be awarded after successful completion of the course. The exam cost is included in the fee.

Prerequisite: The dietary aide must be at least 16 years of age. High school diploma or GED accepted. In order to work at age 16, you must obtain a permission form from a school counselor stating you are in good standing and have an interest in obtaining training in this occupation. A patient’s illness (or sometimes age) may cause them to be confused, uncooperative or even harm themselves. In this entry-level course, you will learn how to assist the nursing unit in promoting a safe environment for patients who are at risk of injury to themselves or others in an effort to ensure that medical interventions can be provided. As a companion, you are assigned to a specific high-risk patient, providing constant observation of that patient. The companion remains in constant attendance with the patient to help maintain the patient’s safety and is an alternative to the utilization of restraints. Responsibility for ensuring the safety of patients in a one-on-one setting is crucial. Students must create a professional résumé for review by week 4 with assistance from the BHC Career Services Center.

Pre-Licensing Home Inspection Training Pre-Licensing Home Inspection Training - Online Our on-line program is designed for those who have a solid knowledge in the building trades and are looking for a convenient and affordable way to meet the mandatory requirements of the State of Illinois. Our on-line program meets the classroom only requirements. You will also need to attend the field training portion of this class in order to be allowed to sit for the state exam. You will have the option of attending one of our live field training classes at no additional cost, or you can participate in five one-on-one inspections to receive private coaching for an additional fee. The private coaching fee is $250 (usually $50 per inspection).

You will have 200 days to complete this class. Once you complete all the requirements for this program, you will be allowed to take the State of Illinois Home Inspector Exam.

After successful completion of the state exam, and after you mail in your application and fees, you will be a Licensed Home Inspector in the State of Illinois.

Instructor: H. McKibbon This class meets Illinois and Iowa state requirements and is designed to prepare students for the FSSMC exam.

Students will be given the option of purchasing the ServSafe Manager Book 6th Edition for $51. Books may be purchased before class begins. Books may not be returned for a refund. All book sales are final. Separate payment (checks payable to Black Hawk College – no cash please) for optional book if the book is purchased the morning of the first class. The certification examination will be given at the end of the last class and will take approximately two hours. All food handlers working in an establishment where food is intended for immediate or on-site consumption are considered restaurant food handlers. The training certificate for this category is valid for three years. All food handlers working in non-restaurants (a kitchen in a nursing home, licensed day care home or facility, hospital, school, long-term care facility or a retail food store) are not required to take another food handler training unless they go to work for another employer.

Hero Street Presenter: Kelly Rundle of Fourth Wall Films Only a block and a half long, Second Street in Silvis, Illinois, lost six young men in World War II and two in the Korean War, more than any other street in America. Hero Street, as it is now known, has provided more than 100 service members since Mexican-American immigrants settled there in 1929. Join us at the beautiful Quad City Botanical Center for a short film, “Letters Home to Hero Street,” followed by a discussion and question-and-answer time with the Emmynominated filmmaker Kelly Rundle. We will be discussing the story and the making of the film. The film is based on 130 letters written by Frank Sandoval over a two-year period (1942-44). The last letter was written just a month before he was killed in Burma.

Chippiannock Cemetery Presenter: Art Pitz Chippiannock is a Native American term that means “place of the dead.” Chippiannock Cemetery is located in Rock Island, Illinois, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chippiannock has long been considered a Quad-Cities landmark and is the resting place of more than 25,000 people, including some of the Quad Cities most memorable individuals. Quad Cities Brewing History Presenter: Mike Wenthe Join us as we take a look back at the colorful history of the Quad Cities during the Prohibition Era as well as the vast history of brewing in the Quad Cities. After large numbers of German immigrants arrived in the 1850s and after the Civil War ended, five breweries were functioning in Davenport, IA: Mathias Frahm and Son, Koehler and Lange (also known as Arsenal Brewery), Littig Brothers (later Mengel and Klindt and Eagle Brewery), Julius Lehrkind’s Brewery and Zoller Brothers. The five breweries primarily distributed their beer in Davenport, Rock Island and Moline.

Brewing has a rich history in the Quad Cities area and has managed to survive many changes, through the Civil War, Prohibition and has now morphed into the thriving industry we know today.

OSHA Recordkeeping Rule Seminar

Production MIG Welding This is a 140-hour Production MIG Welding class designed to train individuals on how to work as a welder in a production setting. The classroom portion covers gases, symbols, blueprints, math, safety, interviewing skills, and resume writing. The remaining class time involves hands-on experience conducted in a welding lab area.

Stick/TIG Welding This is a 140-hour SMAW (Stick) and GTAW (TIG) class designed to train individuals on how to work in a welding environment. The first 40 hours are dedicated to classroom training which includes gases, symbols, blueprints, math, safety, different types of Stick rods, different types of Tungsten and how and when each type are used. The remaining 100 hours are dedicated to hands-on and demonstration of proper use of materials.

Warehouse Worker Safety Training Provider: Jeff Clark

This program will cover the classroom requirements for forklift operations including inspection and material handling. Also included is training for employees receiving or shipping hazardous materials DOT 49 CFR hazardous materials table, packaging of materials, shipping papers and other documentation.

This class will end with demonstrations on the cleanup of minor chemical spills of battery acid, oils and fuels used in powered industrial trucks.

This course meets the training requirements for OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178. The training consists of classroom instruction that covers the content of the OSHA standard, types and characteristics of forklifts, pre-operation inspections, basic driving, stability and load handling, fuels, batteries, and attachments.

Driving practice and performance evaluation follows classroom instruction. A Certificate of Completion is issued at completion of the class.

Water Program Beginning Drinking Water Instructor: Brianna Huber This class prepares individuals for certification as a Class C and D Public Water Supply Operator. This class can also be taken to obtain continuing education credits for Class A and B certificate holders. Subjects include: • Well and distribution system operation and maintenance • Basic water flow hydraulics • Chemical dosage mathematics • Environmental Protection Agency laws • Chlorination and fluoridation Students are responsible for scheduling their exam for the Drinking Water Operator Certificate through the Illinois EPA. This is a blended format class. Students will complete some class work online and will meet with the instructor on campus from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on the following dates: Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and 27, Oct. 18, Nov. 1 and 8.

Wastewater Treatment Class 1 and 2 Instructor: Lisa Perry This course will help prepare you for the Class 1 and Class 2 Wastewater Operator state exam. Topics that will be covered include: activated sludge, chemical addition, digesters, primary treatment, pumps and pumping, and tertiary treatment.

CNC Production CNC Production Machine Operator Level I (64 Hours) Instructor: F. Paul Smith

This is a challenging 64-hour hands-on training program for individuals desiring entry to the world of CNC operation. Upon successful completion of curriculum, participants will be ready for on the job (OJT) as entry level Production CNC Machine Operators. Shop safety and quality principles are given special emphasis throughout the curriculum. The focus on the program is on practical application – all examples and exercises are based on operations typically encountered on the job. Topics include: Production Math, Print Reading, Production Measurement Tools, CNC Tooling, and CNC Machine Operation.

Attendees: Individuals who have shop floor experience but have little or no experience operating CNC machines seeking to gain entry into the workforce of CNC operations.

CNC Production Machine Operator Level II (48 Hours) Instructor: F. Paul Smith

This is a continuance of the Level I CNC Production Machine Operator. This training includes basic CNC operator skills and CNC set-up processes. Coursework covers a variety of relevant areas including: tooling applications, work holding, offsets, programming, methods for holding tolerances, gauging and inspection. Students gain real-world experience using actual CNC Machining centers to perform real production runs and job set-ups. Classes are conducted using Haas CNC machines.

Shop safety and quality principles are given special emphasis throughout the class. Attendees: Individuals who have completed CNC Production Machine Operator Level I or can prove skill and knowledge equivalent to Level I by testing.
