CommUniversity 2022 - 4 Sundays, February 6-27 The Shamanic Journey: Pathway to Knowledge & Power (Class ID 064)

CommUniversity offers classes in diverse areas such as arts/humanities, personal enrichment, regional studies and theology/spirituality. Since 1979, thousands of students have participated in this annual community program. The program is dedicated to offering this higher learning opportunity to anyone ages 18 and older.

4 Sundays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, & 27 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Program Fee $40 Select one class which will meet all four Sundays. Last day to receive refund Friday, January 28.

IN-PERSON CLASSES Classes will meet at the Black Hawk College Moline Campus.

A Tour of Ancient Egypt (Class ID 063) Instructor: Brian Alm, Member of the Oriental Institute, The University of Chicago Let’s go to Egypt! We will be exploring Egypt from the classroom, popping into the major archaeological sites and taking the time to really understand what we’re seeing. (“Real” tour guides never have enough time for that.) In this part-travelogue, part-Egyptology course we will do the best we can (in the COVID age) to capture the experience of actually being there — for about 1% of the cost!

Instructor: Kathleen Collins, Licensed Mental Health Counselor The shamanic journey is a remarkable visionary method for entering into another reality with discipline and purpose. Using classic drumming techniques to alter consciousness, participants will be introduced to the shamanic journey to awaken one's soul and dormant spiritual power. Travel outside of time and space into another reality and make contact with compassionate helping spirits, such as teachers and power animals, for personal wisdom and to gain knowledge to help create a better world. Please bring to class a blanket or towel to use on the floor or a chair, something to cover your eyes, a notebook, and a pen.

The Psychology of Humor (Class ID 065) Instructor: Dr. William Hampes, Professor Emeritus, Black Hawk College This course will focus on the types and styles of humor, what makes something funny, and the role humor plays in persuasion and advertising, interpersonal attraction, relationships such as marriage, dealing with stress, the workplace and teaching. Commercials, films, television shows and individuals such as Abraham Lincoln will be used to illustrate various concepts. The personalities of professional comedians will also be explored.

SCENE: You, Writing a Play (Class ID 067) Instructor: John R. Turner, Poet, Playwright, Retired Prof., Scott Community College We all have stories to tell. Some come as poems, others struggle to fit into stories. But what if you got all the characters to TELL the tale FOR YOU? That’s a play. In this class, each person will write a scene, and then work together to bring it to life. Local playwright John Turner will assist in getting started, making realistic dialogue, writing stage directions, and figuring out who does what, where, and when. And once you have a scene, it’ll be hard to make your characters ever stop talking. Please bring to class a pencil, paper, or preferred digital writing equipment.

Culture, Faith and Cuisine: A Tour of Islam and Muslims Around the World (Class ID 153) Instructor: Dr. Lisa Killinger, Muslim Community of the QC We will explore three to four distinct regions influenced by Islam and the uniqueness of the culture and cuisine of each area. We will start with some common ground of these regions due to their faith practices, then set out on a journey that will take some of us to the Middle East, Indo-Pakistani subcontinent, Africa and, time permitting, the Balkans (Macedonia and Kosovo).

Who Was George Davenport? (Class ID 152) Instructor: Gena Schantz, Local Historian What was this man’s real name? Why was he called Colonel? Is the town of Davenport named for him? And why was he murdered in broad daylight on the Fourth of July? Join us as we answer these questions and learn even more about the life of our earliest settler and developer of the Quad Cities.

4

Basic Spanish (Class ID 069) Instructor: Jay Thornton, Retired Teacher Basic Spanish requires no previous knowledge of Spanish. Greetings, beginning conversation, counting, expressions, etc. are taught to give you a beginner’s ability in Spanish. There will be games and activities to make learning fun.

CommUniversity 2022 - 4 Sundays, February 6-27 American Sign Language (Class ID 066) Instructor: Hershel Jackson, Black Hawk College Learn enough basic signs, finger spelling and sign language syntax to be able to express and understand simple concepts in American Sign Language (ASL). You will be able to sign a simple conversation/dialog with others. Students need to purchase A Basic Course in American Sign Language 2nd Edition, by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke ISBN: 978-0932666420

Matisse: Goldfish Bowls and Harem Girls (Class ID 068) Instructor: Gloria Burlingame, Figge Art Museum, Contract Teacher “Creativity takes courage.” Deceptively simple-looking works. Henri Matisse is a master of modern art. Follow his creative journey and take one of your own, using watercolors, paper, scissors and glue. There is a $3.00 materials fee payable to the instructor the first day of class. Please bring an apron to class to protect your clothing.

Exploring the Gifts of Celtic Spirituality (Class ID 070) Instructor: Dr. Pat Shea, Professor Emeritus, Augustana College Explore some of the many gifts Celtic Spirituality offers that enrich and support the journey of life. The ancient wisdom has invaluable and important insights and perspectives so desperately needed in our present era. Each week will offer information and spiritual experiences to go beyond “knowing about” to “knowing in experience” the deep richness of Celtic Spirituality.

Building a Body of Work, One Great Image at a Time (Class ID 074) Instructor: Trent Foltz, Trent Foltz Photography You will share images with the class and participate in conversations on why we photograph. Through constructive criticism, we evaluate images. Using the feedback and photo imaging software, we adjust and make stronger images. Each week, you will bring in images to be viewed by fellow students. Through this process, you will work on building a cohesive body of work. Please bring your camera and the manual.

"To read Dante is to educate the eye (I)..." John Ciardi: The Divine Comedy and our Journey Towards Wholeness (Class ID 075) Instructor: Daniel Christian, Awarded the 2017 Robert M. Durling Prize from the Dante Society of America This course will introduce students to Dante's epic story, The Divine Comedy, and show how it can serve readers as a surprisingly powerful guide as we aim our sights towards a honest-to-goodness "examined life." We will all join Dante/pilgrim as he journeys from the "dark wood" of distress and confusion into an enlightened state of self-knowledge, one grounded in appreciating that WE truly are all in this one life together. Essentially, an "educated eye" (I) (John Ciardi) is one that embraces the urgency of "liv[ing] the questions now" (Rilke) with the hope of honoring Dante's focus on "nostra vita (this life of ours), and during our February time together, we will grapple with many aspects of this process.

VIRTUAL CLASSES Students will attend the classes virtually via Zoom. During the week of January 31st, you will receive a Zoom link.

The Life and Times of the American Cemetery (Class ID 071) Instructor: Minda Powers-Douglas, Founder-Editor of TheCemeteryClub.com This course will take you around the country as we discuss cemetery histories, symbols on gravestones and much more. We will cover early American cemeteries through contemporary burial trends. Every life has a story to tell, no matter how large or seemingly small. Step into our cemeteries and listen.

9/11: A Retrospective After 20 Years (Class ID 072) Instructor: Dr. Art Pitz, Presenter, Professor Emeritus, Black Hawk College It is time to take a look back at this horrific event with a historical perspective on why the 9/11 attacks happened and what were their consequences. As part of this, we will compare these attacks with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Be prepared to share your own personal story of where you were when you heard of the attacks and how it impacted you.

Paper Crafting with Becky (Class ID 073) Instructor: Becky Pilcher, Local Artisian Enjoy your time learning to make projects using paper. This class will include making different cards at each class as well as a special project each class. These are projects you can make for yourself or as gifts for others.
