Ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom
Instructor: Brian Alm, Member of the Oriental Institute, The University of Chicago
During this 500-year period, 1550-1070 B.C. (Dynasties 18-20), ancient Egypt rose to its greatest glory — the colossal temples, the grand tombs in the Valley of the Kings, monumental statuary, wealth, splendor, diplomacy, warfare, power and conquest. This was the time of the boy king Tutankhamun, the heretic Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti, the female kings, and the Hebrew Exodus (probably). If a grand opera were written about Egypt, it would be set in the New Kingdom; in fact, Giuseppe Verdi did just that: Aida. We’ll cover art, architecture, history, politics, intrigue, religion, and much more. The New Kingdom is really a microcosm of ancient Egypt, but we’ll also take time for questions about the rest of Egypt’s 3,000-year history.

Local playwright John Turner will assist in getting started, making realistic dialog, writing stage directions, and figuring out who does what, where and when. And once you have a scene, it’ll be hard to make your characters ever stop talking. Please bring to class a pencil, paper, or preferred digital writing equipment.

Lost Nation: The Ioway - A Native American Historical Documentary Film
Presenter: Kelly and Tammy Rundle, Documentarians and Filmmakers of Fourth Wall Films
In 1824, during the twilight of Native American dominion, two conflicted Ioway leaders met with William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) to sign a momentous treaty. White Cloud (Mahaska) saw cooperation as survival for his people, while Great Walker (Moanahonga) regretted the loss of their ancestral homeland. This pivotal moment led both men to different tragic destinies in their battle with epic change.
Ioway Elders join historians and archaeologists to tell the dramatic and true story of the small tribe that once claimed the territory between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers from Pipestone, Minnesota to St. Louis. What was a quest for survival in the past has become a struggle to retain a unique Native American culture and language in the present.
Broken treaties, land loss, the end of communal living, and attempts to diminish their unique language and culture led to the establishment of a second Ioway Tribe and their own “trail of tears.”
As two separate Nations, the Ioway entered the 20th century amid American Indian policies aimed at Native American assimilation. From the Ghost Dance to the American Indian Movement, the Ioway experienced cultural disintegration and rebirth. Join us as we learn about this important part of our history.

Or can we modify or even create the light we want? And then in the second night of class we will concentrate on using a shoe mount flash, both on and off camera, to create the image(s) we want. Students with their own flash gear are welcome to bring it. Otherwise, you can just bring a camera with a hot shoe and there will be gear that you can practice with.
