Youth Camp July 11-July 14

Camp for students who will be entering 3rd - 5th grades. • Seven fun interactive sessions to choose from in fashion, engineering, technology and art. • Once you register, a class selection sheet will be mailed to you for you to number your top selections, with #1 being your 1st choice and #7 being your last choice. Every effort will be made to enroll you in your top choices. • Students will attend the same three consecutive classes during the four days. • Classes will be held in-person at the BHC Outreach Center, 301 Avenue of the Cities, East Moline, IL. • Each class is 1 hour and 15 minutes. • A schedule with your classes will be mailed the end of June. • Questions? Recycled Art Discover your creative side making projects that use everyday materials. You will make animals from everyday materials; discover the many items you can make out of egg cartons and create an art piece that can be used as a decoration in your home.

Explore Engineering

Boats to buildings to bridges. Have you ever wondered what it takes to create these amazing structures? In this fun hands-on class, you will learn the design process that goes into such projects and create your own! For All Youth Camps and Classes For marketing purposes, Black Hawk College will be taking pictures of the students in the summer youth camp/classes. DIY Fashion Learn creative and simple ways to add originality and pizzazz to your wardrobe from head to toe. You will create new accessories and make a bag to add to your fashion collection. These do-it-yourself fashions will make your wardrobe look fresh and leave you with the enthusiasm to create even more after the class. You will need to bring an old T-shirt on the first day. Adult size preferred, any color – as long as it’s a T-shirt you no longer need.

No Bake No Problem Learn about ingredients, proper food handling, healthy choices, how to prepare foods and how to make easy meals without an oven. In this hands-on class, you will have a chance to create, taste and take new recipes home with you!

Coding for Kids with Scratch Coding Computer science and computer programming help nurture your problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. This fun, interactive class will teach you the concepts of computer logic, coding, and programming. By being exposed to and familiarizing you to coding, you will have a foundation for success in any future career path. You will need to set up a free account at www.scratch.mit.edu.

Intro to Robotics This class is a beginning introduction to robots, sensors and programming using NXT Lego Robotics System. You will use a basic model robot to attach touch, light, sound and ultrasonic sensors. Working in pairs, you will learn to program the NXT robot using the sensors to complete mini challenges. Teamwork is an essential skill and the foundation of many robotic competitions.

Instructor: M. Powers-Douglas (Ages 8-14) Do you think old cemeteries are fascinating? If you don’t, you should! Travel back in time as we visit cemeteries around the world in search of strange and unusual gravestones. You’ll learn what the meanings are behind the symbols found in cemeteries as well as fun facts about local cemeteries. After this class, you will want to go out and explore your local cemeteries to discover their interesting history. Clay on the Potter’s Wheel Instructor: D. McMullen (Ages 8 - 14) Have fun learning basic wheel-throwing techniques. Work on the potter’s wheel and create projects using low-fire clay and stoneware clay. Projects will be finished with acrylic paints and a glaze. Snider (Ages 11 - 16) This clinic will teach students the responsibilities of a babysitter, what parents expect, how to handle emergencies, caring for and handling infants and young children, feeding techniques and diapering, age-appropriate toys and activities, tips for bedtime issues and much more! Students will learn basic first aid and how to handle emergencies that arise such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents. As babysitting will be many students’ first job, interviewing also will be reviewed. Certificate will be awarded upon completion.

Scratch Coding for Beginners

Instructor: S. Horst-Sommer (Entering grades 2nd - 4th) The world around you functions with code. Learn beginning-level scratch coding and strategies for problem-solving, designing projects, and communicating ideas. Learn the function of coding blocks and use them to make your creations. Parents will need to set up a Scratch account for you at https://scratch.mit.edu/join. Bring the username and password on the first day of class. Then you will be able to use the account at home to practice and create on your own when finished with the sessions. Mon. - Thurs. Robotics Instructor: S. Horst-Sommer (Entering grades 5th - 8th) This class is an exploration in building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics System. Students will build a variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, spin, and much more in order to solve challenges. Students will work in pairs and small teams, sharing a robotics kit and computer. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions or even for students who enjoy LEGOS and are looking for a new and exciting way to explore with them. Mon. - Thurs. Instructor: S. Horst-Sommer (Entering grades 4th - 5th) Lego’s newest robotics platform. The SPIKE Prime combines Lego bricks, a programmable multi port Hub, and coding language. Students will follow directions to build different robotic creations. Using coding, students will program the models to move, make sounds, and explore beginning engineering concepts. Student partners will build playful motorized creations using the Lego WeDo Robotic system. Community Health Mindfulness Meditation Instructor: Dr. D. Mizener, Ed.D. This course is a practical guide to developing the skill of mindfulness and applying it to every aspect of daily life. Practicing mindfulness over time reveals and develops the qualities of wisdom and compassion. The foundational technique for cultivating mindfulness is the practice of meditation. Each week you will learn how to become more mindful and practice various mindfulness meditations. Presented by Bridgeway Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach the community and professionals how to respond when a youth is experiencing a mental health problem or a mental health crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with youth ages 12-18. Gain knowledge of the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse disorders, self-injury, disruptive disorders (including ADHD) and eating disorders. The class will include a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to assess the situation, to select and implement appropriate interventions, and to help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care. The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Health Care Providers Course to prepare a wide variety of health care professionals to recognize several life-threatening emergencies and to provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Despite the fact that the need for skilled healthcare professionals with training and expertise in electrocardiography and cardiac monitoring has never been greater, the supply of such allied health professionals has never been more limited. The emphasis in this course will be to expand upon the “snapshot” 12-lead EKGs and focus on real-time electrocardiogram monitoring, encompassing all areas of hospital and extended care unit-based cardiac observation. This includes monitoring for arrhythmia, ischemia, ST segment and QT interval changes and/or abnormalities in varying types of patients. The Watergate Scandal Presenter: Dr. Art Pitz Join us as we take a look back at this historical event that marred American politics. An event that stemmed from the Nixon administration’s continual attempts to cover up its involvement in the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at Watergate Building. This scandal includes top level government officials, wiretapping, cover-ups, the kidnapping of Martha Mitchell, the release of the tapes, Woodward and Bernstein and their anonymous informant, “Deep Throat” (later revealed as Mark Felt), Nixon’s resignation, President Ford’s pardon of Nixon and the aftermath both domestically and internationally. The first 25 hours are dedicated to gases, symbols, blueprints, math and safety. The remaining 115 hours of class time are conducted in a weld lab area which involves hands-on experience with MIG Welding and the demonstration of proper use of materials. You must be in attendance and participate 95% of the time in order to receive a certificate from Black Hawk College. *Welding Equipment Required: Welding Hood, Welding Jacket, Safety Glasses, MIG Welding Gloves (purchase 3 pair), Welding Beanie, Steel Toed Shoes, MIG Gun Pliers (Welper – Blue Handle) and a padlock for your locker. OSHA & Safety FORK TRUCK OPERATOR SAFETY AND DRIVING TRAINING (4 HOURS) Instructor: Harold Long This training consists of classroom instruction that covers the content of the 29 CFR 1910.178 OSHA standard: the types and characteristics of forklifts, pre–operation inspections, driving safety, stability and load handling. Driving practice follows classroom instruction. Students receive a Certificate of Completion from the college. Construction Training HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION CAREERS TRAINING PROGRAM (HCCTP) Paul Fessler, Program Manager The Illinois Department of Transportation created this program to increase the number of minorities, women and disadvantaged persons working on IDOT projects. This 13-week class will cover math, job/life skills, blueprint reading, OSHA, stick welding, construction equipment operation, shop time, and hands-on projects. This program is at no cost to the participant. The students selected for the program will learn essential skills for working in a variety of construction trades. The 160 Driving Academy CDL A program is a four-week course that is consistent with the laws and guidelines of the Illinois Secretary of State and the Department of Transportation, including the new ELDT FMCSA regulations that went into effect Feb. 7, 2022. The focus is that of the highest quality training and safety of our students. On average, our former students are earning more than $42,000 per year. 160 Driving Academy also accepts WIOA funds.
