Tom Loarie: A Mentor,
Innovator and Communicator
at Heart
BBy Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Tom Loarie
lackhawk’s very own Tom Loarie is a man of many talents, whose journey from Chicago’s vibrant media legacy to healthcare innovation and global mentorship reflects a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. For over four decades, Tom has worn multiple hats—healthcare executive, entrepreneur, mentor, and radio host—with an unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact.
Born and raised in Chicago, Tom grew up surrounded by stories and communication. His father, Willard J. Loarie, was the Executive Vice President of J. Walter Thompson, the world’s largest advertising firm of its time, and his grandfather, Richard J. Finnegan, served as the Executive Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times. This familial legacy instilled in Tom a passion for effective communication and storytelling, which became central to his life and career. While his mother hoped he’d follow in her journalistic footsteps, Tom charted his own course by pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, eventually bridging his technical expertise with entrepreneurial innovation.
Tom’s career began in aerospace engineering before he transitioned to healthcare, joining American Hospital Supply Corporation (now Baxter). Over the next 13 years, he revitalized 13 U.S. and international operations, culminating in his leadership of Heyer-Schulte, a division specializing in medical implants. Under his guidance, the division achieved record profitability, a testament to Tom’s strategic and operational prowess.
In the mid-1980s, Tom was recruited by venture capitalist Tom Perkins to lead Kleiner Perkins’ first medical technology investment. This marked the start of a groundbreaking era in healthcare innovation. Over the years, Tom has raised over $400 million and brought more than 20 cutting-edge products to market, including KeraVision’s INTACS®, a visioncorrection technology celebrated as one of CNN’s top medical breakthroughs of 1999. His work in healthcare innovation has impacted countless lives, bringing transformative technologies to patients in need and setting new standards in medical advancements.
Tom’s entrepreneurial journey was not without challenges. Leading early-stage companies required not only a vision but also resilience in the face of uncertainty. “Building something from the ground up is both rewarding and demanding,” Tom shares. “You have to wear many hats, adapt quickly, and remain steadfast in your mission.” This mindset allowed him to thrive in high-stakes environments, forging a legacy of leadership and innovation.
Beyond the Boardroom: A Life of Mentorship and Learning
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom has always been a mentor at heart. He has served on advisory boards for leading organizations such as Enterprise Ireland and UCSF’s Rosenman Institute, as well as lectured at institutions like UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and Creighton University Medical School.
Tom’s commitment to mentoring extends to his local community. He co-directed a career transition ministry at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville, which has assisted over 6,000 individuals in navigating career changes and finding new opportunities. As Program Director for Catholics@Work, he curated a speaker series that inspired professionals to integrate their values with their careers. These initiatives reflect Tom’s belief that mentorship is not only about guidance but also about fostering connections and supporting others in their growth.
A lifelong learner, Tom has also written more than 1,000 book reviews on Amazon, focusing on topics like leadership, innovation, and personal growth. This passion for reading and sharing knowledge earned him recognition as a top-500 reviewer. “Books are a window into the minds of great thinkers,” Tom explains. “Through them, we can explore new ideas and perspectives that enrich our understanding of the world.”
The Mentors Radio: Empowering Through Stories and Insights
The Mentors Radio stands out as a beacon for those seeking guidance and inspiration. Created by producer
Karen Walker, the show was envisioned as a platform where seasoned leaders could share real-life experiences and practical advice. Karen’s invitation for Tom to co-host the show was a natural fit, given his extensive background in mentoring and communication.
Since its debut on KTRB 860AM, the show has evolved into a global podcast that bridges diverse topics—from leadership and resilience to purpose and innovation. With notable guests like Bill George, Alan Mullally, and Ursula Burns, The Mentors Radio offers listeners a unique blend of actionable insights and inspiring stories. Tom’s knack for connecting with guests and drawing out their wisdom has made the show a favorite among audiences worldwide.
“The beauty of The Mentors Radio is its authenticity,” Tom notes. “We create space for guests to share their journeys in a way that resonates with listeners from all walks of life.” This approach has helped the show garner a diverse audience, ranging from young professionals to seasoned executives, and earned it a top ranking among global podcasts.
A Blackhawk Connection
Tom’s journey resonates deeply with the Blackhawk community, home to leaders, innovators, and achievers who share a passion for excellence and growth. Through The Mentors Radio, Tom not only represents Blackhawk’s aspirational spirit on a global stage but also fosters meaningful conversations that align with the community’s values.
The show’s focus on mentorship and personal development aligns perfectly with Blackhawk’s ethos of connection and excellence. Many residents, whether entrepreneurs, athletes, or professionals, embody the kind of resilience and determination that The Mentors Radio celebrates. Tom’s ability to bring these values to life through engaging interviews and thought-provoking discussions makes the show a natural extension of Blackhawk’s community spirit.
Looking Ahead: The Future of The Mentors Radio
As The Mentors Radio enters its ninth year, Tom is excited about the opportunities to deepen its impact and reach new audiences. Plans are underway to expand the show’s digital presence with short video excerpts, making its wisdom even more accessible. “Mentorship is universal,” Tom shares. “Whether you’re an emerging professional or a seasoned leader, there’s always something to learn.”
For Tom, the show represents more than just a platform; it’s a mission to inspire and empower others. “The stories we share on The Mentors Radio remind us that we’re all on a journey,” he reflects. “By learning from each other, we can navigate life’s challenges with courage and purpose.”

In today’s digital world, your local business needs an online presence for potential customers to find you and learn more. Let’s go through a few ways to build an online presence that could generate more sales for your business:
▶ ONLINE DIRECTORIES
Being listed in reputable online directories like Google My Business, Yelp and Apple Maps ensures your business is easy to find for potential customers. Not only do they provide essential information, such as your hours, phone number, and address, but they enhance your overall online presence by making you more discoverable in search rankings. The easier it is to find your local business, the more likely it is that customers will give you a call or visit your storefront.

Building an ONLINE PRESENCE
▶ WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA
Your website and social media channels are the digital face of your business. Build a well-designed, user-friendly website that provides clear information about your business. Focus less on the quantity and more on the quality and conciseness of the information you provide. Ask yourself what your potential customers might look for when they visit your website.
Being active on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram has also become increasingly important. These platforms offer the opportunity to connect with your audience on a personal level while driving traffic back to your website. Regular updates and interactions on these platforms will keep your business top-of-mind for your audience, contributing to long-term growth and customer loyalty.
▶ SOCIAL PROOF
Social proof, such as customer reviews and testimonials, is integral to your online visibility and reputation. Customers are more likely to support your local business if they can read feedback from other satisfied customers. Encourage your best customers to leave your business an online review when they have a good experience. This feedback will improve your online reputation and increase your searchability.

What to Expect from Potential Tax Changes Under A New President’s Term — and How to Prepare
By Terra Malcolm, Partner/Tax Consultant, East Bay Accounting
1. Extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) Provisions for Individuals
The TCJA introduced significant tax cuts in 2017, and many of these provisions are set to expire after 2025. President Trump’s recent policy stance suggests a priority to make these individual tax cuts permanent, which could mean continued benefits for many taxpayers, especially those in middle to highincome brackets. Some key areas that could be impacted if the TCJA provisions are extended include:

EBA provides premier and personalized accounting services to individuals and businesses. Our areas of expertise include individual and business tax preparation and planning, forecasting, bookkeeping, business analysis, entity formation, payroll services, sales tax reporting and other small business services.
• Itemized Deductions: This could mean the ongoing suspension of certain itemized deductions, including the phase-out of the deduction limit for specific items, as well as limitations on deductions for personal casualty losses.
• Charitable Contributions: The increased percentage limit for cash contributions to public charities (from 50% to 60%) may remain.
• Home-Related Deductions: The qualified residence interest deduction could see changes, with limits on home equity interest deductions continuing.
• Student Loan Assistance: Extended provisions could retain exclusions for certain student loan discharges and employerprovided student loan assistance, helping borrowers manage debt with some tax relief.
2. Eliminating the SALT Cap
Trump’s new policy proposals include a complete removal of this cap, allowing taxpayers to deduct the full amount of their state and local taxes from their federal taxable income.
3. Business Deductions Restored
For business owners, several deductions that have been phased out or limited may make a comeback:
• 100% Bonus Depreciation
• R&D Expensing
• Interest Deduction (EBITDA-Based)
4. Additional Potential Deductions and Credits
Several additional provisions aim to provide taxpayers with more deductions and credits, such as an auto loan deduction and enhanced employer benefits, including tax-free student loan payments. These provisions could provide relief for specific spending areas and reduce taxable income for certain taxpayers.
Start Planning Now for Potential Tax Changes
Navigating tax policy changes can be complex, but proactive planning can make all the difference in maximizing benefits and minimizing liabilities. Please reach out to us and we can assist with any questions you have.
Variety is the Spice of Life at Friday Meetups
By Celeste Altus, Photos By Celeste Altus
Auto enthusiasts in the Tri-Valley are lucky. We have so many opportunities to gawk at cars in this area: from the Blackhawk Museum’s automobile displays, to summer Good Guys shows in Pleasanton, to merely driving down 680. One great outlet for local gearheads is the year-round Friday casual cars & coffee in the Livery shopping center. It truly is a free-for-all and any cars are welcome. A recent sunny Friday saw a mix of the usual restored classic cars, Porsches, and Chevrolets including a 1960 Corvette convertible. This time, a Hummer joined the mix. You never really know who is going to show up with the next surprise.

Niner’s News

Welcome Niner’s 2025 Captain Carol Gray Niners Captain--Here I come!
I look forward to being the Niners’ 2025 Captain, with wonderful Fran Davis at my side. We have a committed incoming board, with plans to pull off exceptional Charm Days, Nine & Dines, a May 1st Angel Cup, and a July 31st Invitational that will certainly fit Channing Azzolino’s big dreams.
My husband Don and I bought a home in Blackhawk in fall 2021. We moved here from the other side of the Bay, Atherton specifically, where we had raised our collective six children and lived for many a year. We were eager to own a golf cart and live on a golf course that was just outside our door. I had just started pickleball, so Blackhawk was the perfect choice for us.
I had never held a golf club until I retired. My husband, Don, didn’t think that my energy would match the game, so he bought me the cheapest clubs around. When I lost two irons in chipping practice last winter—somehow two lost in two weeks— Blackhawk pros

had never heard of my brand. That says something about Don’s confidence in my ability to pick up golf.
Don also joked that I should wait to buy my first golf outfit until after I learned to say “tee” versus “stick”. If any of you know me well, it takes a while for me to get names straight. Now I have a good number of golf outfits, and I have greatly benefited from the Niner’s welcome into the Blackhawk game. Let’s have a great year, and I encourage more members to sign up for our fun.

From HOX Swimmer to Coach: Dive into the Swim Season with LilyanaWebb - Registration Now Open!
By Stacie Mihalik
The pool is calling, and the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) is ready to make waves! Registration for the Spring Clinic and Summer Swim programs is now open, and whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or a beginner eager to dive in, this is the perfect opportunity to join a team that builds skills, friendships, and lifelong memories.
Just ask Lilyana Webb, a former HOX swimmer and current Assistant Coach, who experienced firsthand how HOX goes beyond swimming to shape character, build life skills and develop leadership experience. Lilyana began swimming with HOX at age five and immediately embraced the lessons the team teaches, particularly about sportsmanship. “It’s more than how you act during a sport,” Lilyana reflects. “Sportsmanship is about learning lessons that stick with you outside of the pool.”
During her time with HOX, Lilyana learned to respect her coaches’ perspectives, remain positive, and always give her best effort. She also embraced humility—knowing that sometimes you win and other times you fall short—and developed a strong sense of determination. One of her proudest moments came when she finally earned her spot on the A relay team (the relay team with the highest standing) through dedication and practice.
Beyond technique and competition, HOX helped Lilyana understand the value of teamwork and the importance of shared goals. She fondly recalls winning a relay race at the Woodlands Invitational at age ten, a moment that underscored how each teammate plays a crucial role in group success. As she grew, Lilyana explored other sports like soccer, tennis, and water polo—there wasn’t a sport she wasn’t willing to try. The lessons she learned from swimming, like discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, seamlessly carried over into each new challenge.
For Lilyana, HOX has always been more than just a swim team; it’s a supportive community and a second family. In fact, she’s enjoyed it so much that she’s still with the HOX. Lilyana began her journey as a swimmer, progressed to a junior coach assisting younger swimmers in the water, and eventually became an Assistant Coach. Whether it was swim practice with friends, making memories at HOX social events, or competing in large meets like the Valley Swim Association (VSA) Championship, Lilyana found a sense of belonging that continues to influence her life today. Now in college, she still feels at home on the HOX pool deck, this time as a coach, guiding swimmers to achieve their goals.
Lilyana believes that sportsmanship is a key foundation for success, both in swimming and beyond. The lessons learned while swimming with the HOX teach swimmers to grow as individuals while having fun, building relationships, and creating fun summer memories.
Ready to make a splash? Registration for both spring and summer swim programs is NOW OPEN. To register, visit www.hoxswim.com or contact HOX Head Coach Sean directly at seanq@blackhawkcc.org.

Why You Should Try Diamond Art: A Fun and Relaxing Creative Hobby
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
Afriend of mine recommended that I try Diamond Art years ago, and after finally giving it a go, I can’t believe how much I love it! There’s something so satisfying about it, but I had to dig deeper to find out why so many others enjoy it too. Turns out, Diamond Art has become a favorite hobby for many, and for some very good reasons:
Why People Are Obsessed with Diamond Art
1. Stress Relief and Relaxation
There’s something incredibly soothing about the repetitive process of placing each diamond on the canvas. It’s almost meditative! Many people find that this calm, focused activity helps to reduce stress, unwind after a busy day, and even combat anxiety.
2. Easy to Start – No Experience Needed
You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy Diamond Art. The kits come with everything you need, from the canvas to the colorful diamonds, so even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life, you can jump right in. It’s a simple, beginner-friendly way to get creative without any pressure!
3. Stunning Results, Even for Beginners
What’s amazing is how beautiful your finished project looks. The sparkling, mosaic-like effect of the diamonds creates a piece of art that looks like it took hours of skill to create—when really, it’s a fun and easy process. You’ll be amazed at how impressive your work is!
4. Endless Designs to Suit Any Taste
Whether you’re into landscapes, animals, famous characters, or abstract patterns, there’s a Diamond Art design for everyone. The variety of kits available means you can choose one that reflects your personal style and interests, making it even more enjoyable to work on.
5. A Sense of Accomplishment
One of the best parts about Diamond Art is watching the image slowly come together, piece by piece. It’s a rewarding feeling to step back and see your finished masterpiece after all the effort you’ve put in—and trust me, it’s worth it!
6. Boost Your Focus
This isn’t just about making art—it’s about being present in the moment. The process requires concentration, attention to detail, and a steady hand. You’ll find yourself fully immersed.
7. Take It Anywhere
Diamond Art is a portable hobby, which means you can take it with you wherever you go! Whether you’re on the go, relaxing at home, or even listening to a podcast or audiobook, it’s easy to work on your project whenever and wherever you like.
Why I Love It
For me, Diamond Art has been the perfect creative outlet. I can relax, listen to an audiobook, and watch a beautiful piece of art come together. It reminds me of those classic paint-by-number kits, except now I get to work with sparkling, colorful gems! Plus, everything I need comes in the kit, which makes it hassle-free and easy to get started.
I started with some Christmas ornaments and then moved onto Valentine’s Day coasters.
Here are the Valentine’s Day Coasters I’ve created with Diamond Art: Happy crafting!

I’m excited to share an upcoming show I’m producing and headlining called Take Me to the World & Company on Friday, February 28th @ 7pm at Village Theatre in Danville. The title of the show pays homage to the late Stephen Sondheim, one of the most prolific lyricists of our generation.
Joining me for this show includes special guest soloist Paul McKnight, former BH Chorus member, Grammy Winning Cellist Joseph Hebert, Guitarist Mike Williams, Bassist Aaron Germain, and pianist Irene Jacobson. This show marks my first show at Village Theater since early 2020. From 2016 to 2020 I had the pleasure of producing and or performed in nearly 30 + shows at Village Theater with my performance platform, The Jazz Room, several in partnership with The Town of Danville.
This show will range from Broadway to jazz standards to original music. It will be an evening to celebrate music from Broadway shows like Waitress, Phantom of The Opera, Evening Primrose and music from the big screen like La La Land and Mamma Mia. Some tickets will be auctioned off at the T.H.E fundraising gala event on February 21st to raise money for the Tassajara Hills and net proceeds from this concert will be donated to Tassajara Hills Music Program. Heidi Barrett: First Lady of California Wine
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990; Photo by MJ McColgan
We recently had the privilege of sampling wines crafted by the renowned Napa Valley winemaker, Heidi Barrett. Known as the First Lady of Wine, Heidi has made a significant impact on the California wine industry, producing some of the region’s most sought-after cult wines. Her impressive career has seen her work with prestigious wineries such as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle Vineyards, Paradigm Winery, and Amuse Bouche, earning her numerous accolades, including five perfect 100-point scores from wine expert Robert Parker.
In addition to her winemaking prowess, Heidi is also an avid scuba diver, painter, and helicopter pilot, adding to her allure as a multifaceted and talented individual.
Under the guidance of our knowledgeable host, David Schulze, we were treated to a tasting of Heidi’s own label, La Sirena, which translates to “The Mermaid.” The 2022 Moscato Azul and Rosato were both exceptional, showcasing Heidi’s signature touch of elegance and finesse.
The 2020 Aviatrix Grenache, a unique collaboration between Heidi
and her daughter, proved to be a bold and courageous expression of winemaking artistry, breaking through societal barriers with its strength and innovation.
We also had the pleasure of sampling the 100% 2019 Malbec and the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, both of which were outstanding examples of Heidi’s winemaking expertise.
The highlight of the tasting was undoubtedly the 2019 Studio Series, a flawless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, and Cabernet Franc, presented in a stunning bottle adorned with a beautiful flower arrangement painted by Heidi.
We would highly recommend adding La Sirena to your Napa ‘must do’ list. We took a few bottles home to share with our wine friends.

Zermatt’s Winter Magic: My Snow Globe of Happiness
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
My visit to Zermatt with family was one of the loveliest winter getaways. Zermatt is a charming little village with impeccable views of the most mystical and majestic mountain, the Matterhorn; that sits proudly over the village and is perfectly framed by wooden homes and snow. Being a non-skier, my favorite thing to do was souvenir shopping, just walking around the village or by the Vispa river, that flows from the glaciers and down through Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. The water from the melting glaciers is quite amazing. The river walk had spectacular views of the Matterhorn with lots of photo opportunities. Also, if you enjoy Swiss food, do try the Swiss fondue with raclette, potatoes, pickled onions and gherkins. I very much enjoyed the cheese and tomato fondue at Du Pont restaurant.
I also picked one of the days to ride the gondola Matterhorn express up to Schwarzsee at 8,474 feet. Here you can hop off and take photos with the Zermatt sign and Matterhorn up close, enjoy a cozy meal at the Hotel restaurant Schwarzsee while enjoying jaw dropping panoramic views of the Alps. Luckily it was a clear day with lots of sunshine. I could even spot the Zermatt village below. The gondola ride was very scenic with stunning views and spine-tingling moments. As you ride up to the snowy heights, the beauty of Matterhorn and its surrounding nature becomes more empowering and intimidating. Regardless, it was an amazing once in a lifetime experience for sure.
The gondola can take you all the way to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 12,740 feet, the highest cable car station in Europe, but it’s not for the weak-hearted like me. Most of the time it’s closed because of the winds. My family skied the Trockener Steg, that sits at the foot of Matterhorn at 9,642 feet, with the mighty mountain so close, just 2.485 miles away and from here you can head to Italy too. The matter valley has wide trails and long runs. A winter paradise for skiers!
Here is a fun fact. The ski trail between Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Zermatt is the longest ski slope in the world, which is 15.5 miles, making it the longest descent in the world.
The last day I was there, it snowed all day with periods of heavy snowfall and no Matterhorn in view. I did feel like I was inside this snow globe of happiness. A perfect ending indeed!
As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!
Finding the Perfect Valentine’s Jewelry Gift: A Heartfelt Guide
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry
Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, romance, and meaningful connections. What better way to express your feelings than with a carefully chosen piece of jewelry? Jewelry transcends time, symbolizing deep emotions and shared memories. But with so many options available, how do you find that perfect gift? Here’s our thoughtful guide to help you choose a Valentine’s jewelry gift that will truly resonate with your loved one.
Understand Their Style
Before you begin shopping, take a moment to reflect on your partner’s personal style. Are they drawn to minimalist designs or do they prefer bold statement pieces? Do they love classic elegance or lean towards modern, edgy trends? Paying attention to what they currently wear can offer valuable clues. If you’re unsure, a timeless piece like a delicate gold necklace or diamond stud earrings is a
safe yet meaningful choice.
Choose Symbolic Pieces
Valentine’s jewelry is all about symbolism. Hearts, infinity symbols, and entwined designs beautifully convey love and commitment. Consider a heart-shaped pendant, a bracelet with an infinity charm, or a ring featuring interlocking designs. Birthstone jewelry can also add a personal touch, representing either your partner’s birth month or a special date you both cherish.
Incorporate a Personal Message
Engraving is a wonderful way to make a gift even more special. A simple “I love you,” your anniversary date, or a meaningful phrase shared between the two of you can transform a beautiful piece into an unforgettable keepsake.
Quality Matters
When it comes to jewelry, quality is key. Look for reputable jewelers who offer gemstones and precious metals. A wellcrafted piece not only looks stunning but also lasts a lifetime, becoming a treasured heirloom. At Padis Jewelry, every piece is crafted with precision and care, ensuring you receive only the finest quality.
Presentation is Everything
Once you’ve selected the perfect piece, don’t forget about the presentation. A beautifully wrapped gift box adds an extra layer of excitement and anticipation. Consider pairing the jewelry with a heartfelt handwritten note or a bouquet of their favorite flowers to create a memorable Valentine’s experience.
Make
It a Shared Experience
Why not make choosing the jewelry part of the celebration? Plan a special outing where your partner can try on different pieces. This not only ensures they’ll love the gift but also
creates a memorable moment you can cherish together.
Final Thoughts
The perfect Valentine’s jewelry gift isn’t just about sparkle—it’s about finding a piece that speaks to your relationship, your shared moments, and the future you envision together. Whether it’s a diamond ring symbolizing forever, a timepiece to mark precious moments, or a simple pendant engraved with love, the right piece will say more than words ever could.
At Padis Jewelry, we understand the art of meaningful gifting. With over 50 years of experience in crafting fine jewelry, we take pride in helping couples find pieces that tell their unique love story. This Valentine’s Day, let us help you find a gift that will make their heart skip a beat.
