Living in Blackhawk is considered to be an ideal place to reside, however, we recognize the potential dangers nature can throw our way. Most recently, the prospect of a major earthquake has caused many families to seek additional earthquake insurance, which is a prudent decision. Of course, another precaution is to prepare an emergency family pack for quick exit of your home. The fire department offers a number of valuable suggestions regarding what you should have available for either a short, three day, stay in your home after an earthquake as well as a long stay pack of essential items for an absence from your home over more than a few days.
Being prepared with medical first aid supplies, medications that are taken daily, and other items such as food, water, and toilet paper at a minimum are important. Also, do not forget to have pet food, medication, and first aid supplies for your animals, as well.
Wildfires are another, potential, danger we all need to be prepared for, to quickly exit our homes in an emergency. Having a plan of action and an emergency response kit similar to the type described above are essential first steps.
If you need additional information regarding fire or earthquake preparedness, contact the San Ramon Regional Fire Department at 925-838-6300. They have an extensive array of training material, safety products, and advice on services available for our use and protection.
A new state law, effective July 1, 2019, is that automatic garage door openers include backup batteries. This law requires that automatic garage door openers sold or installed in a residence have a battery backup function designed to operate when activated because of an electrical outage. In case of an earthquake or a fire, the likelihood of a power outage can prove devastating. This is, especially, true if you are trying to manually open your garage door.
You may want to contact your garage door repairman or service company to enhance your existing system to comply with the new law.
Public safety is an integral part of the coordinated roles offered by our Blackhawk Police Department and the San Ramon Regional Fire Department. As residents we, too, play a role by staying attuned to the training, services, and educational programs offered by the local police and fire departments.
