RIDE A TROLLEY

Clang clang clang...trolley rides are a fun-filled way to tour the towns. Not only is it a convenient way to get where you’re going, but many of the trolleys offer narration and transportation between local points of interest. Find them in Rapid City, Lead, Deadwood and Hill City.

TAKE A TOUR

Sit back and relax in style when you book a trip to see the best of the area with a local sightseeing tour operator. Reserve a trip to the many parks, historic sites and hidden gems when you ride with a qualified tour company.

Tour transportation ranging from a variety of restored VW buses, luxury vehicles, open-top vans and Jeeps can accommodate large groups or small.

Some operators also provide guided adventure tours throughout the year.

MILES 38 miles

TIME 1 to 2 hours

Meander through the north unit of Badlands National Park on SD 240 surrounded by towering buttes, dramatic cliffs, and striated spires. This 38-mile stretch of highway has scenic overlooks with sweeping views of the Badlands’ jagged formations, popular hiking trails and the Ben Reifel Visitor Center.

SPEARFISH CANYON STATE SCENIC BYWAY

ROUTE Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing

ROAD U.S. 14A

MILES 19 miles

TIME 30 minutes

The Northern Hills are home to Spearfish Canyon State Scenic Byway. Towering limestone palisades line U.S. 14A as it twists through the 19-mile gorge. Spearfish Creek traces the canyon where Bridal Veil, Spearfish and Roughlock falls are popular roadside attractions. Hikers find wonder exploring side canyons, and cyclists love the broad shoulders and uniform 3 percent grade.

VANOCKER CANYON/NEMO ROAD SCENIC DRIVE

ROUTE Nemo to Sturgis

ROAD Vanocker Canyon Road FSR 26

MILES 17 miles

TIME 30 minutes

Enjoy the gentle curves of Nemo Road as you follow Box Elder Creek and pass dense pine forests, abandoned miner cabins and expansive meadows. Turn into Vanocker Canyon a mile from the town of Nemo. The 17-mile leg twists and curves through three breathtaking canyons that give way to a downhill plunge to Sturgis.

BOULDER CANYON SCENIC DRIVE

ROUTE Sturgis to Deadwood

TIME 20 minutes

The high-walled valley road of U.S. 14A provides a short, yet sweet 12-mile drive. This relaxing route between Sturgis and Deadwood is especially stunning in the fall when it’s bursting with colorful foliage.

Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway threads its way around pigtail bridges, through one-lane rock-walled tunnels and ascends to the uppermost heights of the Needles. The route is considered one of the most outstanding byways in America. It travels through portions of Custer State Park, the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, near Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Black Elk National Wilderness Area.

BELLE FOURCHE TO DEVILS TOWER SCENIC DRIVE

ROUTE Belle Fourche to Devils Tower National Monument

ROAD SD 34/ WY 24

MILES 52 miles

TIME 1 hour

The journey to Devils Tower National Monument takes you through the picturesque Belle Fourche River Valley on SD 34. As you enter Wyoming, the road changes its name to WY 24. The drive passes through Aladdin, WY, and climbs through ponderosa pine forests. As you approach the town of Hulett, WY, glimpses of the tower emerge from the ranches and grasslands surrounding the rocky hills.

Thinking about spending an extra day in the Black Hills and Badlands? If you’re on the fence about heading back home or saying, “why not?” to your inner adventurer, we’re here to help.

Much like a three-day weekend, a single day in any one of these regions might be the exposure you need to plan an entire vacation for the next time around. But you’ll never know unless you try.

Check out these suggested activities from select regions that can be done in one day – they’re oh-so fun, and oh-so practical! It’s time to make spontaneity your reality.

Get ready to spend one more day in…

DEVILS TOWER COUNTRY & SUNDANCE, WY

A spectacular “add-on,” Devils Tower National Monument and its surrounding prairie is a trip in itself, but even though

it’s in Wyoming, it’s so easy to add to your South Dakota vacation. It truly is that close!

The Monument is impressive in photos alone but checking it out in person is one of the greatest favors you’ll ever do for yourself.

After the trip to the Monument, or even before, depending on which direction you are traveling, be sure to explore other adventures in the Black Hills of Wyoming. Visit Sundance, WY, to learn more about the Sundance Kid’s namesake and explore the Crook County Museum. You could spend the entire day enjoying Western history in the museum and art gallery at Hulett, or at Keyhole State Park near Moorcroft. While you’re in the region, check out the Serenity Trail in Newcastle. The Black Hills of Wyoming and the surrounding region is a relaxing, scenic place, and a wonderful area to spend one more day in!

NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS REGION

If you’re looking to add a relaxing, outdoorsy day to your trip, the Northern High Plains region is a hidden haven. This region is easy to spend a whole day in if you are interested in lounging by the water, fishing, or boating. This region is home to two state recreation areas, Rocky Point State Recreation Area, and Shadehill State Recreation Area.

SOUTHERN HILLS REGION

After a trip to the Crazy Horse Memorial®, it’s time to take the vacation farther south. The Southern Hills are home to a natural paradise with some small-town fun added to the mix. In one day, it’s easy to visit places like Wind Cave National Park, The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, and Evans Plunge. From there, you can round out the day by hiking in Sheps Canyon, or having a cool-down day by the water at Angostura Reservoir. If you’re up for one more glimpse into the Old West, head over to Edgemont for a museum adventure. Finally, if you get up early enough, you might consider seeing the hills by hot air balloon!

I-90 EAST REGION

If you’re on the hunt for quirky, fun attractions with fantastic photo opportunities, then look no further than the I-90 East region. Murdo, Kadoka, Interior, Wall, and Mitchell are in this area, and each have their own flavor of fun to offer visitors. See restored historical buildings near Murdo at 1880 Town or the Pioneer Auto Show. View the Badlands in Interior, taste spirits in Kadoka, and Wall Drug Store in Wall. Always keep an eye out - this area is home to a giant dinosaur and jackalope or two!

Get Outside

No matter where you go on your trip, Western South Dakota is an outdoor recreation paradise. With wonderfully diverse terrain and wide-open spaces, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast.

CYCLING

Crushed limestone and gravel paths, wide-shoulder highways, in-town bike paths, and rugged mountain trails mix up the adventure and offer many options for all types of cycling.

Nearly all 6,000 miles of the Black Hills National Forest roads and fire trails are open to cyclists, enabling mountain bikers to traverse across the region.

Named after a former governor who endorsed its construction, South Dakota’s George S. Mickelson Trail is more than just a recreation trail - it’s a trail of history.

The 109-mile trail traveling through the heart of the Black Hills has over 100 converted railroad bridges, four hard rock tunnels, 15 trailheads and exceptional scenery from Edgemont to Deadwood. Visitors can traverse the same path as Lt. Col. George A. Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Potato Creek Johnny.

Burlington Northern built this rail line over 100 years ago to accommodate the miners who had rushed to the area to pan for gold. In 1983, rail travel ceased, and this incredible crushed limestone trail became a reality.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Bike, run, or take an accessible trolley to experience the trail for yourself.

The Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, and Relay takes place on June 1-2, 2024, covering 26.2 miles of the northern part of the trail. To traverse the trail by bike, there are two options: the Mickelson Summer Trail Trek, which takes place on June 21-23, 2024, or the Fall Trek taking place on September 20-22, 2024. Both are open to bikes and e-bikes.

Trolley on the Trail is an event that gives people with impaired mobility the opportunity to experience the trail. This four-hour trolley ride runs on June 4, July 2, and September 10, 2024 in Deadwood, and on July 10 and September 11, 2024 in Hill City. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Deadwood NeighborWorks at 605-578-1401 or the Hill City Chamber at 605-574-2368. Those making reservations must have a handicapped parking permit. One assistant can accompany an individual, if needed.

Black Hills Motorized Trail Permits are required for all motor vehicles traveling on motorized trails in the South Dakota portion of the Black Hills National Forest. A separate permit is required when operating on motorized trails in Wyoming.

Be aware of the current trail conditions and treat the trails accordingly. Check beforehand that your vehicle’s width is appropriate for the trail you are riding.

Closures are posted at trail entrances. Obey signs and be cautious of logging trucks on trails with shared use.

Avoid muddy areas — they are more susceptible to erosion. Use caution — ride over obstacles, not around them.

LIVE REENACTMENTS

In the Black Hills and Badlands, you’ll find plenty of modern life mixed in with parts of the past. Experience history and life as it was, ‘way back when,’ with entertaining reenactments.

You’ll find the Deadwood Alive troupe performing free shows and shootouts daily during the summer. Have a seat on Main Street throughout the day to watch the show!

WESTERN ATTRACTIONS

Catch a ride on a historic stagecoach that gives 30-minute, narrated tours of Deadwood’s history. Tickets are available at the Outlaw Square Stagecoach Stop on Main Street in Deadwood.

Hop aboard the 1880 Train on select dates for an Old West shootout. The train takes off from Hill City to Keystone, and is held up halfway through the ride by bandits — luckily, the sheriff is in town to take care of these outlaws.

Near Custer, Four Mile Old West Town stands as living history. Walk through the recreated town as characters share their knowledge of life in the Old West and perform a weekly melodrama. Want more Old West spirit? Check out the 1880 Town near Murdo where you can wear costumes and tour around over 30 authentically furnished buildings from the period.

Western history permeates the Black Hills and Badlands region, and throughout the charming communities, you will find other Western gems like museums, historical sites, and more. When visiting Belle Fourche, don’t forget to visit the Tri-State Museum and absorb a piece of the history of the Wild West! Also, be sure to take a picture of yourself standing in the geographic center of the USA just right behind the museum!

HORSEBACK RIDING

Whether you explore the region by bus tour, car, bike or offroad trails, you shouldn’t miss the chance to experience the land on horseback.

GUIDED RIDES

Saddle up your own horse, or ride one from local outfitters and guest ranches. Many places offer guided trail rides suitable for all skill levels, including Blue Bell Stables in Custer State Park. These rides are a great opportunity to learn the basics.

HORSE CAMPS

Settle down in the evenings and board your hooved companion at one of the many horse camps throughout the area. These specialized campsites offer room for trailer parking, corrals, water, and electricity so you can relax after a long day of riding.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Before you hit the trail with your best buddy, be aware that certified weed free hay is encouraged at most horse camps. It is required in Sheps Canyon State Recreation Area, Custer State Park's French Creek Horse Camp, Sage Creek Wilderness Area, and Bear Butte State Park's horse camp.

Additionally, have your horse’s travel papers in order, including all current Coggin’s and Health Certificates, before you leave home. It's best to call prior to your trip to confirm requirements and to book early!

Dedicated to commemorating the events of the Cold War, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site offers a chance to immerse yourself among the underlying drama of the era. Visit this park to explore three different sites along a 15-mile stretch of I-90 and learn what it was like to have the responsibility of thermonuclear war at your fingertips.

EXPLORING THE PARK

Two facilities — Launch Control Facility Delta-01 and Launch Facility (missile silo) Delta-09 — make up the national historic site in addition to the visitor center. We recommend dedicating at least an hour to fully appreciate the somber and captivating history of this site.

THINGS TO DO

Start your tour at the visitor center at Exit 131 to discover displays and stories of the people who worked

at the facilities. Friendly staff are on-site to help you navigate and learn about the park.

Go underground on a ranger-guided tour of Launch Control Facility Delta01. The trek begins and ends at the entry gate to the Delta-01 compound and lasts 45 minutes. On this engrossing journey, you’ll descend 31 feet underground and see ten consoles that once controlled ten nuclear missiles. Be sure to plan ahead as these tours require reservations and fill up quickly.

Resurface to take a self-guided cellphone tour of Delta-09 and Delta-01. Gaze through the glass roof of Delta-09 to see an unarmed missile. Air Force veterans who served at both sites may be present to narrate these tours. Be sure to engage with them and expand your knowledge of the Cold War as it existed on the Great Plains.

Badlands National Park

Within the North Unit, 64,000 acres of the park have been designated as the Sage Creek Wilderness Area — one of the largest examples of preserved mixed-prairie grasslands in the country.

Since 1976, the National Park Service and the Oglala Lakota Nation have partnered in managing Badlands National Park. Plans are in place to expand visitor facilities in collaboration with the Tribe.

While you’re in this portion of the park, you’ll see some of the craggier formations in areas like Red Shirt Table and Sheep Mountain Table. Take in the deep canyons, ravines, and mesas that make up this stunning unit.

WHITE RIVER VISITOR CENTER

Night Sky Viewing

STARRY NIGHTS

As the sun sets over the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota, visitors are treated to an awe-inspiring night sky experience. The relatively remote location of these areas makes for a clear, unpolluted view of the Milky Way Galaxy, stars and satellites, perfect for stargazing. On any given night, one can see over 7,500 stars shining brightly in the sky.

In the summer, visitors can see celestial objects such as Scorpius, Andromeda Galaxy, and Hercules Cluster.

During the winter, the clear night skies make it possible to see the Orion Nebula, Pleiades star cluster, and constellations like Orion, Taurus, and Gemini.

With the region's dark night skies, meteor showers offer a breathtaking and unforgettable experience for stargazers. Visitors can also enjoy the annual Perseid and Geminid meteor showers. The Perseid meteor shower occurs annually in mid-August, while the Geminid meteor shower can be seen in mid-December.

GAZING

During the summer, on Friday to Monday nights visitors can enjoy a Night Sky Program at the Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater offered by Badlands National Park. During this program, park rangers and volunteers will showcase and share the wonders of the universe, including constellations, planets,

and stars, using telescopes provided by the park.

The Badlands Astronomy Festival held July 5-7, 2024, brings together space science professionals, astronomers, educators, and enthusiasts for a weekend of lectures, stories and star-gazing.

TOUR THE SKY

For a more personalized experience, visitors can also visit the Badlands Observatory in nearby Quinn. Observe the sun, moon, galaxies and planetary nebulae using the public telescopes on the outdoor observing deck. With a variety of telescopes, including the 16” Dobsonian reflector with Goto capability and viewing enhanced with night vision, visitors can embark on year-round Night Sky Tours and enjoy live-stack imaging of a deep sky object, a laser constellation tour, and stargazing.

BORGLUM VIEW TERRACE & SCULPTOR’S STUDIO

While you walk the Presidential Trail, stop and see the memorial from the Borglum View Terrace. It was the sculptor’s favorite spot to view the mountain and evaluate the progress of the carving. At the Sculptor’s Studio, located just down the steps, you can learn more about the work it took to carve Mount Rushmore and the men who dedicated their lives and time to it.

Each evening from late May through September, the Evening Lighting Ceremony is held at dusk. The event includes a 10-minute Ranger Talk followed by a short film, singing of the national anthem, and lighting of the sculpture. ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN

The dream began in 1939 when Chief Henry Standing Bear invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to create a tribute to the North American Indians and showcase a great hero.

Today, the crew continues to carve the Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, upon his steed into the mountain. When completed, the granite sculpture will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long.

No federal or state monies finance the memorial — admission fees and contributions are the only funding the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation accepts.

DESCEND INTO A HIDDEN WORLD

Hidden beneath the Southern Black Hills lies the underground world of Jewel Cave National Monument. The cave was discovered in 1900 and officially designated as a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Over 210 miles of the cave have been mapped, and the rare formations draw visitors year round.

This remarkable national park in the Southern Hills is a place of two worlds. Above ground, discover wide-open trails, prairie grasslands, and wildlife. Below-ground, 164 miles of known cave passages await.

EXPLORING THE PARK

Designated as the eighth national park in the U.S. and the first cave to be protected within the National Park System, Wind Cave is a one-of-a-kind experience.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Tours will be suspended from May 1, 2024, to fall of 2024 as the elevator system into the cave is being rebuilt! This improvement project will benefit future visitors, and even though access to the cave itself will not be granted during this process, Rangers will host virtual tours of the cave using LIDAR technology.

Explore above ground and discover hiking trails, prairie dogs, bison, and incredible sights. Expect to spend an hour and a half to four hours exploring the surface and visitor center of the cave.

ON THE SURFACE

Begin your trip at the visitor center which is open year-round and located 11 miles north of Hot Springs. Learn more about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife by enjoying the interactive exhibits and viewing an educational film.

On the surface of the park, there are over 30 miles of hiking trails which include a portion of the 111-mile-long Centennial Trail that stretches across the Black Hills.

GO BELOW

Following the completion of elevator work in fall of 2024, visitors will be able to descend into the cave below by going on a ranger-guided tour. Tours last from an hour to an hour and a half. Arrive early or make a reservation at least three days prior. Get your advance tickets at recreation.gov.

Accessible cave tours and special accommodations are available for those with limited mobility, vision and hearing. Call the visitor center to make arrangements or ask at the information desk for an accessible tour.

Visit in 2024 to see the 9th Annual Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival, where over 30 hot air balloons will take flight above the Southern Hills at dawn. This festival will be held on August 23-25, 2024, and is a great place to catch a glimpse of balloons, learn how they operate, and snap some great photos as well.

Kids are encouraged to join in on the fun! They can bounce on inflatables in the park or enjoy exciting crafting events.

Other events at the festival include live performances, a farmers’ market, and a vendor market too. Event schedules can be found on the festival website.

Devils Tower National Monument

A GEOLOGICAL WONDER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

Devils Tower rises 1,267 feet above the picturesque Belle Fourche River Valley and is a jaw-dropping rarity.

Also known as Bear Lodge, the tower was the first national monument — designated in 1906 — and is sacred to over two dozen Native American tribes. Many ceremonies are still held at the tower today.

ENCOUNTER

The Visitor Center has interpretive exhibits that describe the park’s natural and cultural history, a bookstore and a souvenir shop. Look for the newlyinstalled exhibits and displays.

EXPLORING THE PARK

Hiking trails, climbing, and ranger programs are activities to try or watch as you explore the area around the tower. Expect to spend a couple of hours at the monument seeing it from different angles and discovering its history.

During your visit, you may see prayer flag bundles on trees. Do not disturb or photograph these spiritual items.

TRAILS

Take a trek on one of the five trails in the park. Tower Trail, the most popular route, takes you along a paved, 1.3 mile path around the base and offers spectacular views.

CLIMBING

Devils Tower is a premier climbing area. Anyone wishing to climb above the boulder field needs to register prior to their ascent. Please note, there is a voluntary climbing closure in June.

EVENTS

During the summer, park staff and special guest speakers cover topics related to the monument’s natural and cultural history. Programs include guided walks along Tower Trail and short talks outside the visitor center.

Hop on a fat bike and hit the trails. Fat biking is permitted on any Black Hills trail where mountain biking

is permitted — meaning tons of wintertime adventures.

For more fat tire fun, register for a winter race like The Winter’s Fat Classic Race, an evening fat tire bike race that starts and ends in Deadwood.

Take on a fresh challenge during the winter months as waterfalls and vertical seeps freeze up and are perfect for ice climbing. The Black Hills are a great place to get started or polish your ice climbing skills. Many climbs are easily accessible and have low avalanche danger while offering challenges on vertical ice.

Skiing & Snowboarding

AREA SKI RESORT

Looking for a familyfriendly resort with short lines, great runs, highspeed lifts and a terrain park? Then head to Terry Peak Ski Area near Lead. The summit clocks in at 7,100 feet, offering the highest lift service this side of the Rocky Mountains. The resort offers a full slate of services and amenities, including lessons and equipment rental.

CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING

Spend a day gliding through the snow on crosscountry skis. Find peaceful solitude on the nearly 6,000 miles of abandoned railroad grades, logging

roads and fire trails open to cross-country skiers.

TRAILS

In the Black Hills National Forest, Big Hill Trail near Spearfish, Eagle Cliff Trail near Lead and Carson Draw Trail near Sundance, WY, are groomed for cross-country skiing.

Other trails include the Beaver Creek trail system, portions of the Centennial and Mickelson trails, and trails in Bear Butte State Park and Custer State Park.

TRAIL MAPS

The annual South Dakota Snowmobile Trail Map is available on the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks website, at local Forest Service offices and the

Black Hills Visitor Information Center in Rapid City. Access snowmobile trail conditions and live trail cameras at gfp.sd.gov/snowmobiling.

Snowmobiling is closed in some areas, including active logging operations, winter wildlife ranges, plowed roadways, developed cross-country ski areas and posted private land.

Know before you go: Private property is interspersed within the Black Hills National Forest. Please respect private property owners. The Snowmobile Trail Map depicts most of the areas that are closed.

Many trails lead to restaurants, lodging and other popular amenities.

RENTAL COMPANIES

LICENSES

In South Dakota, all snowmobiles must be properly licensed to operate on public and private lands, except private land owned by the snowmobile’s operator.

Resident snowmobile licenses must be permanently affixed to each side of a snowmobile, below the windshield and on the hood cowling. Snowmobilers who operate on road rights-of-way and public snowmobile trails must show proof of financial responsibility (liability insurance). Non-resident snowmobiles licensed in another state can be legally operated in South Dakota.

PURCHASE Buy permits at trailside vendors or online at gfp.sd.gov/snowmobiling. A separate permit is required to operate a snowmobile in Wyoming's trail system.

Snowshoeing

The Black Hills, known for its picturesque beauty, offers unique opportunities for explorers during winter. In this cold season, snowshoeing allows travelers to hike through the snow and grants access to normally inaccessible locations. Treks in the snow provide opportunities for stunning views, wildlife sightings, and solitude.

Unlike downhill or cross-country skiing, snowshoeing requires minimal technical training, heavy equipment, waxing or slopes. Embrace the winter wonderland, and discover the stunning Black Hills on a snowshoe adventure.
