Founded in 2007 by Corey and Danea Crowder, Architectural Specialties (a.k.a Arc-Spec) has become one of the fastest growing door companies the Black Hills and five-state region. With expert division leaders, they offer a comprehensive suite of services including window and glass door design and installation, access controls, and inventive solutions for commercial and residential openings of any type — walk-through doors, garage doors, full glass doors, swing doors and hydraulic-operated doors.

To date, some of their more memorable projects and clients include The Midnight Star, Deadwood Mountain Grand, Black Hills State University, Casper College, area hospitals, agricultural facilities, and many high-end residential homes spanning from the Black hills to Colorado to Jackson Hole.

Leaders in Hydraulic Doors

“We’re the only company that builds and installs hydraulic doors in the area,” said Corey. “And because we have the knowledge and access to a variety of products and services, we’re in a unique position to be a onestop-shop for any kind of door, or opening need.”

Because many of their jobs are custom, the Arc-Spec team is constantly innovating and fabricating new designs. For example, Corey and his team were intimately involved in the creation of HydAway™ hydraulic doors, a division of Powerlift™.

This groundbreaking design actually creates a large wall that opens and closes and houses fully concealed cylinders that give it the cleanest profile of any door or window on the market. HydAway™ doors and walls feature another special feature called the ‘Cushion Close’ cylinder design which reduces travel speed over the last few degrees when closing, allowing the door or wall to shut more quietly than others.

Arc-Spec remains one of the flagship manufacturing locations to help Powerlift™ launch the HydAway™ Hydraulic Door line. Powerlift has been building hydraulic doors longer than anyone else in the ind ustry, since 1992. Powerlift™ remains the leader in the design, manufacturing, installation and servicing of industrial and high-security hydraulic doors. To their acclaim, HydAway™ was just named 'Best Outdoor Product of 2023' at The International Builders Show.

Discuss the much-awaited annual events such as the tree lighting ceremony, the nativity scene viewing, or the exchanging of gifts, and accompany these occasions with festive pictures taken from previous years.

Additionally, Arc-Spec is now cladding doors with other materials besides glass, which has moved them into the architectural venue. These innovative doors are being welcomed into both the commercial and residential construction industries.

Architectural Specialties is the first to make a full glass hydraulic door. This stunning modern design provides a great aesthetic and is relatively easy to maintain. Because of the specialized hydraulic hinges that operate these full glass hydraulic doors, they too open and close very smoothly and quietly. T hese doors are composed of a single or doubleglazed pane glass. For added convenience and style, the glass panels can be tinted, frosted or textured, and are often installed with hardware like handles and knobs, with an option for a locking system.

Commercial Doors

Architectural Specialties provides commercial door options to the five-state region. Whether a business needs hollow metal doors, architectural wood doors, commercial grade doors and hardware, they have access to all brands including Allegion, Hager, Assa Abloy, DormaKaba, Daybar, VT Industries, Bayer Built Woodworks and Pine Door custom wood doors.

Because of their relationships and network of distributors, they have access to thousands of products. If your door needs to be serviced quickly their fleet of 15 service trucks and vans will respond swiftly. And if Arc-Spec doesn’t have it on the shelf, chances are they can get it much faster due to their distributor relationships. “I am proud to say we have installed the doors to many notable commercial projects. The office doors to both mayors of Gillette, and Rapid City. Front doors to the Midnight Star in Deadwood, Rapid City Public Library received new automatic sliders last year” Corey states.

Residential Garage Doors

The Residential Garage Doors division offers a variety of door design options, styles and decorative hardware for a one-of-a-kind look. In fact, their design software allows customers to use a picture of their current, or prospective, home to ‘try-out’ different styles of garage doors. Thus, eliminating the risk of picking the wrong door and enabling customers to see exactly what the finished project will look like. With years of experience in installation and repairs, they remain known for providing the longest-lasting, smoothest-running garage doors in the area. From spec home value to custom home features Arc-Spec has had the staff experience and knowledge to complete the project from the bid to the scheduled installation.

GLASS / WINDOWS

With over 125 years of combined experience in commercial and residential glass, Arc-Spec provides new construction, replacement and repairs including screen repairs. Because their glass team are glaziers to the core, they can even create custom shower doors, tabletops and mirrors.

“Residential glazing and custom shower doors & enclosures are some of our favorite jobs. Our team has decades of custom home showers under their belts,” shared Todd Weig, Glass Door Division Manager.

Arc-Spec has various window companies with Gerkin leading their modern home line. The all aluminum Rhino series gives clients that maintenance free edge without bringing the words vinyl into the conversation. With stacking combinations of sliding, hopper, awning, casement, fixed, double hung and patio doors anything is possible. Jeld-Wen is the historical line with materials made from alder, fir, and pine with a large assortment of factory finishes. Meeting the specs of historical sites and the warmth of traditional home building, Jeld-Wen covers a large building spectrum.

“WE HAVE TWO DOORS NEAR THE BLACK HILLS PLAYHOUSE THAT ARE QUITE UNIQUE — ONE HAS 4000 LBS OF REAL STONE AND THE OTHER HAS 2800 LBS OF HALF SPLIT LOGS. EACH DOOR IS ON THE SAME RESIDENTIAL SITE AND PERFECTLY BLEND INTO THE ARCHITECTURE,” EXPLAINS COREY.

Arc-Spec’s evolution can be directly associated with the addition of its diverse and highly‐skilled personnel. Staff with talents ranging from inventive engineers to resourceful project managers, AAADM-certified technicians to glass glazers, and custom welders to painters of doors & frames.

When long-time staff member Curt Zolnoski took over the Hydraulic Door Division in 2012 it quickly grew and they now have a six-state footprint (Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Colorado, and the Dakotas). In 2015, when Carlos Colon joined they started the Garage Door Division, followed by the launch the Access Control division in 2016 with the leadership of Mel Bender. Rounding out the division leaders, Todd Weig jumped in 2017 and accelerated the Glass Division to new heights.

Corey considers one of their most significant accomplishments to be the work environment they’ve created. He sees Architectural Specialties as a vessel for everyone’s success and encourages everyone to follow their own dreams and is happy to help them achieve it.

“Our company culture sees everyone as an equal partner in the success of the business. We want to treat everyone as family, employees and customers alike,” shared Corey. “Providing an incubator for our staff to share ideas freely and grow with the company is what it’s all about,” he continues. “We try hard to maintain a positive, level atmosphere. In fact, I dislike the words boss and employees. I’d rather be known for being in the trenches every day, with my co-workers. I simply couldn't do this without such a dynamic and special team.”

In fact, due to the change in global supply chain conditions, many other service providers have missed the mark, but not Architectural Specialties.
