Perfect IG
Your Guide To The Perfect Instagram Pictures You rummage through Instagram whilst on the go or at night before bed, and you find these incredibly well photographed and edited photos that contain such integral depth. The colours seem so vivid and pleasing. Here is a quick guide to getting your pictures looking great.
see it. scan it. get it.
Step 1 To start with, let’s talk about photography. If you own an android-operated phone, try setting your preference to RAW. RAW is a file format that allows every inch of your image to be captured and saved, whereas when you use JPEG, a large proportion of what you see isn’t captured by the lens. Notice how the two formats seem so different. JPEG gives it a bit of a whitewash, whereas shooting in RAW format allows for the camera to adopt all of the aspects of the image. Seeing what you view is different from what you capture, and the options are endless. Step 2 Editing introduces you to a world of colour and saturation that highlights the shadows you’ve been residing in. Editing apps are life, they forge our photos into being similar to those that Kim Kardashian posts. Nothing too sophisticated, but good enough to show off how good an Instagram star you could be. Our top favourite Apps to use are SKRWT, VSCO Cam, Snapseed and Afterlight. Step 3 Crop your photo to eliminate things you absolutely don’t want in it. Or, if you’re using the Snapseed app, use the healing brush (a Photoshop tool) to eliminate something you don’t want in the picture—anything from a mole to dirty laundry that you haven’t washed in three days. Make good use of the horizontal and vertical perspectives to bring parts of your image forward or backwards. It makes the image flatter and steeper simultaneously. Step 4 Start off with your exposure. Set it dim-lighted enough to make sure the depth of the image stands out. Step 5 Contrast your image to intensify the colours, to bring out definition and style. Step 6 Saturation is tricky. It’s your best friend but also your best friend who has 10 different mood swings. Each level of saturation is vital. Go with a mood you wish to feel. Step 7 Highlight the image, which helps to reduce the white spots in the image. This way you can fill the image with gorgeous colours that create a whole new balance of interconnecting colours. So a sky won’t just be white and blue; it would be blue with a hint of purple or peach, whatever you please. Step 8 Shadow your image to darken what’s already dark. It mystifies the image to make dark colours even stronger. Step 9 Finally, shadows tint, allows your greens to be greener and your purples to be even more purple. It optimises the usage of good lighting and colour balance to help you achieve the colours you want. by STEPHANIE GOVEAS

Millenial
Reasons Being a Millennial is Awesome for Your Career WE UNDERSTAND MARKETING
Us millennials have a bad rep for wasting a bunch of time on social media, and for some reason our parents worry if we will ever learn how to communicate to people face-to-face should the time ever come. In reality, being a millennial has a tonne of perks, especially when it comes to being a valuable candidate within the job market. Here are six reasons why being a millennial is great for your career.
see it. scan it. get it.
If you have a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr or personal blog, you are marketing yourself. You are obviously carefully choosing cover photos, banner images, sharing tweets and posting photos of yourself and things you love, all in the hope of getting more followers. You are creating a
brand for yourself and you understand the difference between your public image and the perception that you wish to portray, hence marketing is like second nature to you. This is an amazing skill to share within your resume and cover letter, so list all of your social media handles where you have expressed yourself and your interests. For example, if you’re interested in pursuing a career in marketing, communications and/ or journalism, it is important to have a personal website where you can express your thoughts, ideas, skills and showcase your talents.
WE'RE RESPECTFUL OF DIFFERENT CULTURES AND GROUPS OF PEOPLE
Growing up in our time, we have been exposed to a diverse range of cultures, people and experiences. This helps us to think more critically about other people and their struggles, even though they may not be something we have gone through personally, but we are able to empathise with others and create a bond, which makes it easier for us to accept different viewpoints. All of this helps us to embrace working in a diverse workforce, which will help us understand different ideas, ways of expressing ourselves and communicating in a peaceful manner.
WE'RE RESULTS-DRIVEN WE GET TECHNOLOGY
Since we have been Facebooking, tweeting, texting, live streaming, YouTubing—you name it—we obviously know how to use a computer. We’re the first generatino to barely know a life without the internet. Knowing how to use a computer or even certain software is something you want to specify and mention within your resume. Most companies like knowing how you have used technology within your daily life—for example, running your school drama club’s Facebook page, or if you know how to create videos and edit them. These are all things you must definitely list on your resume as they help you to stand out.
WE'RE INFORMED ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND US
We grew up with cable TV that has at least a dozen international news channels, and are exposed to more blogs than we can ever keep up with. Hence we live in a time where media is super accessible and are always constantly plugged in on a national and global level. All of this makes it easier to communicate, spread news a whole lot faster and even though every single generation is exposed to the internet, we are the only generation to use it more actively than any other demographic.
As millennials, we are always told that we want instant gratification, where everything has to be done right now. However, this shows that we are resultsdriven, efficient, and focused on what’s next. This shows signs of entrepreneurship, leadership, perseverance, work ethic and a vision for the future.
WE'RE SUPER WELL-ROUNDED
Blame the internet for our multifaceted interests, because we grew up in a world dominated by the incredible world wide web, therefore our passions, stories, and interests are diverse as ever. With videos, information, facts, and news now readily available at our fingertips, we have access to more information than any generation before us. All of this helps us find out new things and take up interests that we may not have known existed otherwise, and this has helped us to have a diverse range of interests both academically and socially.

Put Yourself In My Shoes
Put Yourself In My Shoes A lesson can be learned in many ways— conventionally in a crowded classroom with a teacher and a whiteboard. But I learned the fundamentals to living a happy life through a brief but life-changing car ride. Munir Hussein is an Uber driver who provided far more than just his service one fateful day. This is his story.
My name is Munir and I come from a small town called Rawalpindi in Islamabad, Pakistan. I have four children and have been living in Dubai for the last threeand-a-half years. My life wasn’t always filled with traffic and passengers. Back in Rawalpindi, my father had a furniture business, where we had a factory that manufactured wedding furniture. It was a comfortable and excellent business, however, the factory had many issues. One main issue was that the electricity was not very reliable. There was also a lot of political instability, which caused us to be far behind on our sales. At the time our showroom business was still running until a ceaseless bomb blasted the shop, ultimately leading to business failure. I tried to fix the shop by borrowing some money from my brother, but I wasn't able to recover the family business. The situation had gotten even worse and I had no idea what to do. I also had a loan of Dh200,000 on my head. I was facing a major dilemma at the time, as I had two options in front of me. One was to stayed in Pakistan itself and get a good position as a salesman, based on
see it. scan it. get it.
my business background. Or the other option was to move to Dubai and earn more money but live far away from my family. The thing is, my children grew up in luxury, where they had been driven to school every day and were in one of the best schools in Islamabad. I didn’t just want money to survive, I wanted to give them everything that they desired. I remember how I used to drop them off to school myself sometimes and living without them was extremely difficult. It took tremendous strength and courage. Ultimately I knew that moving to Dubai would be the best option for me, so now I work 17 to 18 hours a day just for them. I have always fought for everything in my life, I refuse to give up as I need to succeed for my family. All my hard-earned wealth, stability, and things my family had, all of those things have disappeared and any strong person would not have the courage to stand tall and fight. Most people would cry, get depressed, and be sad. I, however, refuse to do that. I just want to work hard with honesty, maintain my respect and support my family as I don't want them to suffer. Today, I started work late as I had just managed to clean my car from the outside, and I knew that cleaning the inside would take another 30 minutes. These 30 minutes would have been every beneficial to me as I could earn money for my family, however I couldn't do that as I cannot cheat the name that I have created for myself. I know that the passenger wouldn't have noticed if I had cleaned or not but I knew that I had to do the right thing and perform my best. To this date, I haven't cheated anyone by taking a longer route. I have always tried to provide an honest service and never taken any shortcuts in life. This would be my advice to young people—that life is hard and there are many ways to get to your destination but don't take the shortest way there by cheating people. Trust me, it won't do you any good in the long run. Doing things the right way is a lot of hard work, but it is something that will take you far and ahead in life. So don't be scared of doing things the hard way, do persevere in the face of adversity, and be true to yourself. by TANISHQ DHINGRA

5 22 Zen
Ways to Be Zen in the UAE When we speak of mental health, we immediately think of yoga, exercise, bubble baths or even eating right. Here in the UAE, there are tonnes of ways through which you can achieve mental health at its finest. Here are the top five places to de-stress and gain back your mental equilibrium in the UAE.
GIVE YOUR BODY A DAY OFF
DOGS DAY OUT
The mind and body are super connected, which is why you need to give it a rest. Loosen up the knots in your body and relieve yourself from stress by treating yourself to a spa treatment. The Tips and Toes Spa offers a variety of services, ranging from basic foot massages to full-body treatments. Imagine being enveloped in a Moroccan rassoul body wrap. Feel your body sink into the pleasure of organic products. Sounds absolutely rejuvenating!
If you’re a massive dog fanatic like us, you’ll find this is the place to be. Paws Pet Planet at Dubai Investment Park is absolutely awesome. Offering a variety of services for our furry friends, on the weekend they serve as a great venue for these little ones to run about and have a field day. Dogs serve as a source of happiness. Studies prove that dogs help to release anxiety, depression, and allow people to become more sociable, which in turn rejuvenates their moods. You definitely don’t want to miss this.
30-MINUTE FLIGHT
EAT RIGHT
CAT LOVERS PARADISE
Dubai Creek Park at Umm Hurair 2 provides the famous Dubai Cable Cars. At just Dh25 for adults and Dh10 for kids (with Dh5/ person for entrance), you can experience 30 minutes of serenity, peace and relaxation as the cars travel for about 2.3km along the park. Take the time off to overlook kids running about, happy picnickers and serene images from 30m off the ground. Sing, write or even take pictures. Spending quality time with yourself is very vital, as it allows you to discover yourself. Enjoy the ride, and the gorgeous view.
Most of the food we consume is junk and who can blame us? It’s delicious! Put it down, right now. Junk food lacks important nutrients like Omega 3 fatty acids and other vitamins. The UAE hosts several farmers markets, and one we love going to is the Ripe Market every Friday/ Saturday from 9am to 3pm at various locations. They serve as a host to everything from fruits and vegetables to fitness workshops and jewellery. In addition, they also have yoga classes as well as live cooking stations. Sounds like a dream come true!
Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you cat lovers. Imagine spending time in a room with around 20 adorable cats running around you and dining by you. Cats are incredible animals that can really allow you to take a step back from your constant anxiety, whilst you stroke their fluffy bellies. They’re super playful and happy to welcome new faces. The Ailuromania Café in Jumeirah has an entrance fee of Dh30, which includes your beverage. How cool is that? It’s a definite must-try experience. by STEPHANIE GOVEAS

Inside dubai
Inside Dubai is a collection of cultural publications and tourist memorabilia that focus on the true essence of Dubai. The organisation uses photography to provide an in-depth, visual representation of the city’s soul and culture as an alternative to the commercialised image that most people tend to have of the city. We had the pleasure of sitting down with photographer Jalal Abuthina and talking to him about his vision.

THERE'S A LOT WRITTEN ABOUT DUBAI IN A NOVEL FORM, BUT THERE AREN'T MANY VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CITY.
Scan to follow
How did your journey as a photographer begin? My friend bought me a camera as a present but I never really used it when I got it. Then, during my last semester at college, I wasn't taking too many classes so I had a lot of free time. It was during this free time that I started to take some pictures of Montreal. Once I graduated and was back to Dubai in 2004, I started working as a freelance photographer, and by 2008 I quit my day job and became a full-time photographer. What’s the inspiration behind Inside Dubai? Basically, Inside Dubai is a series of street photography about Dubai and it provides readers with a contemporary account of what’s happening in Dubai from a past, present and future perspective. Most books portray a historical side of what happened leading up to the present and most of the books today talk about the new tourist developments. They don’t offer any insight into the fabric of society or into the people that live here or the older districts of the city. There’s a lot written about Dubai in a novel form, but there aren’t many visual representations of the city. This project isn’t about new Dubai, and you won’t find anything stereotypical; it’s a complete reversal of the mainstream image of Dubai.
Could you tell us about your books? The main book is called Dubai Behind the Scenes. It’s a visual journey through the older parts of Deira, Bur Dubai and Karama. There are so many sub-districts of Deira, which aren’t really exposed—like Somalia Road and Al Nasr Square, the 7,000 buildings in Karama and the Sikh and Hindu temples in Bur Dubai. The third book is called Best of Dubai Shop Names, which is basically a collection of the funniest shop names in the city. All of my books are sold online at my website. They’re also available at Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, Gulf Photo Plus, Toil and Tinker and Frying Pan Adventures.

NY Resolutions
New Year's Resolutions We Dare You to Try! It’s time for the New Year to roll in again and, yes, we are all tired of listening to the same old New Year’s Resolutions. We don’t understand why we all need to lose weight, start reading more, be more organised and have our life together. Now, we aren't demotivating you to achieve all your stereotypical resolutions, but in the meantime you could try a couple of our novel suggestions.
see it. scan it. get it.
1. Finish a chapstick Oh, what a goal! If you can manage to hold on to that sucker for the better part of three months, be proud. Be even more proud if you use the chapstick enough in these three months that it actually finishes. It’s totally worth the effort of keeping that thing out of the laundry, the trash and the constant fear of losing it. Facebook status worthy, yes! #goals4life
2. Grow a plant No, it doesn't count when you just buy a plant and then forget all about it. How about trying to actually plant something and watching it grow? Again, try not to neglect it, think of it as an animal that needs to be fed and given attention regularly. If you’re feeling ambitious, try growing tomatoes! Why? Just for the heck of it. #gogreen
3. Don’t send a text to someone sitting in the next room, or the same room We are all guilty of doing this, especially when we can hear our parents asking us a simple question, but instead of parting our lips to make noise, we just quickly type out a response. Whhhhy? Is it that hard to communicate these days, or are we as a generation just that lazy? I know, I know, it’s totally both. Thanks, internet. #millennialbaby
4. Don’t stalk your favourite celebrity But it’s so much fun! Yeah, I know. Social media is great for stalking what celebrities do, and what's even more fun is commenting on it, hearting it, retweeting it, and simply debating who they are currently seeing. Yes, we are aware that they aren't our friends, and don't even know that we exist, but whatever, those are trivial details. I can’t say that I don’t spend the better part of an hour each day following Liam Hemsworth, but a great new suggestion to try out is listening to a podcast or even reading the news. #stalkertendenciesbegone or #CNNBeLike
6. Don’t collect your hair on the wall of the shower Girls, you know you do this, and boys with long hair, you too. Suck it up, make a hairball and throw it out after you’re done showering. Just once. Also, isn’t the feeling of wet hair stuck on your hands just the best thing ever? #hairybusiness
7. Try taking a selfie that looks like a picture of an actual person Yes, we are referring to all the duck-faced girls out there! How about taking a normal-ish picture of yourself? You know, the kind where your lips aren’t wrinkled up like you just licked a slice of lemon. Show us your pearly whites, without the bathroom stalls. #sorrynotsorry
5. Stop staring, using, or listening to your phone while walking You are part of the problem. Your zombie-like behaviour is causing accidents, self-imposed injuries, and very angry drivers. The world is actually pretty interesting if you spend time looking around. So take off the headphones, put your phone on silent and enjoy a nice walk, and don't be surprised with the sound of birds chirping, or taxis beeping. It will all be quite… refreshing! #naturesmusic
8. Be a part of the human journey Be empathetic, love thy neighbour, do everything you can to be better than you were yesterday. Say hello to that stranger you see in the elevator every morning when you leave your home. You have an obligation to be a good person, show compassion to fellow human beings. We all got here the same way and we’ll leave in pretty much the same manner, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. #instalike

Khasab A clear day, and a winding yet smooth road dotted with fjords and quaint bays for camping is surely going to captivate you. It’s one of the most beautiful cities and has been nicknamed as the Norway of the Middle East. Time from Dubai: 2.5 hours Points of interest: The Khmazera castle buried in the heart of the town. Although it has been renovated, the place still manages to evoke the aura of a bygone era beautifully. Otherwise, you can always opt for the mainstream but amusing dhow cruise. Tip: Don’t forget to carry your passport—you will need to cross the UAE-Oman border!

Jabal Jais Standing tall at 1,1910m, the amiable Jebel Jais weather makes this road trip rather tantalising. The views from the top are simply breathtaking. The orange rays of the setting sun paired with the shimmering lights of Ras Al Khaimah conjure a sight that will surely enthral you. Time from Dubai: 2.5 hours Points of interest: What could be better than taking a dip in the hot mineral water with a high sulphur level? There’s also a palm-tree resort, which is the perfect place to rejuvenate yourself. Moreover, you could also camp out, fire up a barbeque and stare peacefully up at the night sky. Tip: Carry respectful, synthetic clothes so that you can dip yourself in the Khatt Springs.
Hatta pools For history enthusiasts, the Hatta Pools is the perfect place. The historic village of Hatta will make you feel nostalgic. Driving along the gravel tracks while viewing the historic village of Hatta makes for an impressive sight on its own. Furthermore, the rock pools are a great place to escape the hectic city life. Time from Dubai: 1.5 hours Points of interest: Hatta Heritage Village is a worthy stop—you can see the old watchtower and restored stone building of the old town. Tip: If you continue down the dirt track after Hatta Pools, you will reach a mesmerising, winding Tarmac road through the mountains. by FALGUNI ASHAR

Yasalam 2016
YASALAM 2016 Race Weekend Bursting With Entertainment Excitement raced across the nation’s capital as Yasalam 2016 race weekend was given the ‘green light’ with a crowd-stomping performance by Pitbull. ‘Mr. Worldwide’ started the party with his energetic performance, opening the show on a stage filled with flamboyant dancers. The showman aptly belted out Don’t Stop the Party followed by the fitting International Love. Performing to an enthusiastic crowd of over 15,000, fans of the music-maker danced and sang out loud to instantly recognisable tunes, including dancefloor favourites Time of Our Lives, and Greenlight. Dressed to impress in all black and sunglasses, Pitbull started the unmissable weekend in style with fans begging for more. We also watched The Chemical Brothers, who made a memorable UAE debut on the second night of the Yasalam After-Race Concerts, moving a packed crowd of 18,000 to their celebrated dance anthems. They opened with the iconic anthem Hey Boy, Hey Girl, before powering into Galvanize and Block Rockin’ Beats, each enthralling and moving the crowd to their own unique beat as the group’s spectacular light and visual show hypnotised fans. Showgoers stood in awe as, at one point, a giant robot appeared on screen, providing a mind-blowing, immersive, interactive performance like never seen before in the capital. The award-winning duo are renowned for their electrifying and visually stunning performances and, with them, the du Arena hosted one of the most memorable nights of live entertainment in Abu Dhabi. This was a weekend for the books!

Rihanna Rocks Final Night For YASALAM 2016 One of the most celebrated performers of modern times, Rihanna closed out the eighth-year edition of the YASALAM Festival with a sensational After-Race Concert performance enthralling 40,000 fans with her inimitable and celebrated style. The performance marked the end of Rihanna’s Anti-World Tour, making it an extra special night for the Abu Dhabi crowd. In a stunning performance, Rihanna appeared on a glamorous white-lit stage in a dazzling outfit flanked by dancers, before taking the audience from high to even higher as she belted out favourite early chart-toppers Umbrella and We Found Love before moving to modern classics Stay and Work. Her non-stop set also included her latest song, Love on the Brain. As she continued throughout the show, the Bajan megastar drove the crowd wild, bringing the house down with Shine Bright Like a Diamond. She delivered a powerful performance worthy of the YASALAM finale, declaring "it was great to be back", before being met by massive cheers.

Gadget Gift Guide
GOPRO HERO 5 BLACK
GADGET GIFT GUIDE
People have been down in the dumps about GoPros lately, largely because the picture quality hasn’t kept up with what you can expect from your phone. And because many of the latest phones are water- and dust-proof, you don’t even need a GoPro for your adventures anymore. The Hero 5 Black, the latest model, seeks to change that, coming with voice control, a two-inch touchscreen display that allows you to edit videos on the go, and an amazing new camera sensor that can record 12MP pictures and 4K video. You know you want one.
Christmas is just around the corner, and that means spending thousands of dirhams, if you can, on gifts for friends and family. And if you need to buy something for someone who’s tech-obsessed, you’re totally spoilt for choice this year. Okay, they probably have the latest iPhone or tablet (because they love technology), but there’s plenty of next-gen tech out there that should get their pulses racing. Here’s our pick of the bunch.
NEW MACBOOK PRO
LENOVO YOGA 900
AMAZON ECHO DOT
Coming in near the top of the Lenovo Yoga range, the Yoga 900 is the brand’s latest two-in-one laptop for those who want to work and play hard. Perfect for a hardworking friend or family member, it comes with a premium silver finish, a super-fast Intel Core i7 processor, 512 GB of speedy SSD storage, and 8 GB of RAM. And the best thing is you can use it as a normal laptop, or else swivel the screen round to use it as a tablet or a combination of the two.
While Amazon hasn’t officially launched its voice-controlled home hub in the Middle East, there’s no doubting that we want it over here. Badly. It connects to Amazong’s personal assistant, Alexa, which you can use to control smart home devices, play music, provide information, or just chat to. This Dot model is the second generation of the Echo, and it comes with a smaller form factor, better voice recognition tech, and a couple of extra buttons. Oh, and you can buy it in this region from the big online retailers.
It’s been an age since Apple updated the MacBook Pro, the brand’s professional-grade laptop, but now we have a new one and it looks like a beauty. Thinner and lighter than ever before, it comes with 130% faster graphics than the previous model, 100% faster flash storage, and a 67% brighter display. On top of that, you get the new Touch Bar, a touch-enabled screen just above the keyboard that allows you to control various functions on the main screen. That’s got to be worth at least half of the AED 5,999 starting price.

Predictions for 2020? Right now, the biggest shifts in the world of advertising is the use of our phones. The mobile phone right now is what TV was when the radio was hot. Right now, that's the biggest shift as everyone is officially moving to their mobiles, and almost everyone is connected to the internet via their phones. Unfortunately, a lot of people underestimate the power of the mobile phone at this given moment. But by 2020 people will be whipping out their mobile phone and creating videos and content to engage their audience and followers. Do you think Facebook will lose its audience in the years to come based on the new algorithm? What can we expect? I don't think Facebook will lose anything in our lifetime; it is definitely here to stay. They have changed their algorithm so that you “pay to play. Basically what this means is that they are forcing people and companies to create great content. And when you are not creating good content, they are reducing your reach so that you pay to reach your audiences and targets. But if you do create great content, and are doing it consistently with great engagement (including likes, comments and shares) they will reward you with a higher reach, hence negating the need to “pay to play". So that's basically the prerequisite for dealing with the new algorithm. What is the best platform with which to market a new product or service within the MENA region and why? Right now Facebook is by far the best and most useful social media platform, and Instagram comes in a close second. But because Facebook owns Instagram, they are basically the same company ruling the social media world and, between them, they're the most useful to reach new audiences.

Tell us about your most successful marketing campaign. We have had a lot of great campaigns throughout the years, however the best and most successful campaign would have to be the one I did for myself. The reason for that is, for many years, I have always hidden behind the scenes and this is due to the fact that I am an introvert and didn't really enjoy being in the limelight. But about five years ago, I made the decision to teach and touch more lives, so that’s when I started branding myself, creating videos even though I was horrible at them. I learnt to get used to dealing with the uncomfortable things in my life. When it comes to things that I did successfully I would have to say my online brand, website, and social media [Joon just reached one million followers on Facebook]. These are things that I am very blessed, happy and proud of.

You have built multiple websites and companies. Did you ever fail with any of them? What did you learn from that experience? Did I ever make a mistake? Huh, that's what many people seem to think doesn't happen! I have obviously made mistakes and had failures numerous time. People that work with me, my friends, relatives, and employees will see that I don't hit home runs all the time, but that doesn't stop me. I think that's the one thing that really differentiates me from a lot of people out there who believe that obstacles and challenges are not part of the equation. Let me tell you this, success is filled with struggles, challenges and obstacles. It’s not about eliminating them, but rather to deal with them joyfully because that will make all the difference in the world. So yes, to answer your question, I have made a ton of mistakes, I have had launches that didn't make it, I have shot horrible videos that have totally bombed, I have had campaigns and launches that didn't make me any money, and again I understand that it's all part of the journey. It's all about getting back up and continuing even when life knocks you down.

Musician
Meet Dubai's Own Adele:
SAMARA Armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar, a collection of original songs and her deep, powerful voice, Samara has spent the last couple of years taking the local open mic circuit by storm. We caught up with the 17-year-old, Dubai-based, Canadian-born singer-songwriter for a quick conversation about her music.
How did your journey as a musician start? Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved music. Like, so much. I would stand on my bed and make my parents sit on the ground and I’d play music and sing and pretend they were my fans. Ever since then, music has been a huge part of my life. I can’t imagine my life without music. It’s helped me through so much. What’s on your playlist? I love deep house, R&B, acoustic music and instrumental renditions of songs. I enjoy dubstep and rap. That’s a lot of genres.
see it. scan it. get it.
What genre would you say your music is? All my songs are acoustic: it’s not indie, it isn’t pop. It’s in between. The music I write is slow and emotional.
IN MY MUSIC I CAN ACTUALLY ADMIT TO THINGS WHEN IN REALITY I WOULDN'T
What’s your songwriting process like? I can only write my songs after 12 am. I sit in my room—the lights are off because I have to be in a certain mood—and I strum. First I find my chords, then I write my lyrics. I take real life situations and situations in movies and TV shows I watch and I try to make up a story around it. I write the lyrics and sing the song. If I like how it sounds, I put everything together and keep practicing until it sounds just right. What’s your dream as a musician? My dream is to sing in front of a crowd of people that appreciate the music I write. I just want people to feel the way music makes me feel, which is happy. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians here in Dubai? Write your songs, put yourself out there. You don’t know who could spot you, so make sure to do your thing. You don't know what can come out of it. When you aren’t singing, what are you doing? Sleeping. This one time I slept at 7 in the evening and woke up at 4pm the next day. I like to sleep, okay? It’s a hobby of mine.

40 Don’t Talk About these At Work An internship is a great way to get your feet wet and it gives you a glimpse into how the real world works. However, once you ace your interview, remember that your work isn't finished. Once you start working with these uber professionals within your chosen field, there are certain things you must NEVER do. Here are a couple of no-nos to follow before you get a bye-bye.
Dont gossip about co-workers
Avoid discussing politics
Dont spread rumours about anything you may have heard because you never know when someone might come in handy. Always maintain good relations, even when that one coworker gives you the most boring of tasks. Always remain friendly and approachable.
Your employer and coworkers don't care about your political opinions, so just focus on work and nothing more. Stray away from revealing too many personal details and opinions, just remain professional and don't send out any mass emails or mimic any politicians. No-one needs to know!
Never discuss what you did last night
Don’t trash-talk about work when you're at work
Never talk about your job on social media
Always keep it professional; keep your thoughts to yourself no matter how tempted you are to speak about whatever crazy antics you and your friends got up to the previous night. This is because whatever you say is a reflection of you and your character, hence keep that pie-hole shut and be useful at work. Safe conversations include any new movie you are currently watching, what you ate for breakfast, or last night’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder.
Yes, internships are hard, tedious, frustrating and some bosses can be a challenge, but you need to come prepared to deal with anything or anyone. No matter how small the task, you need to complete everything you were assigned without complaining. Why are you doing all this? Because you will get a letter of recommendation at the end of the whole thing, and you don't want to ruin all your hard work for one moment of stupidity. Just wait until you get home and release the verbal diarrhoea to your friends or family.
Avoid blogging, writing, tweeting, or even mentioning anything even remotely unprofessional about your job and coworkers, especially if your accounts are open and not private. Vent to a friend, your parents, even your pet, about work frustrations. Remember that privacy is a thing of the past, and most things you post on social media are easily accessible. Don't ruin your reputation and end your career before you even start out.

Taqado Mexican Kitchen
Restaurant Review
Hola a todos! Hold on tight because we are going to take you through a wild Mexican experience! Chalkboards, colourful glass bottles, soothing music, suspended glass bottles enhanced by soft lighting is what creates the Taqado Mexican Kitchen that we all know and love. The food was actually legendary. Yes, that's the word. We spent about 10 minutes just thinking about what to order. Everything looked like a can't-miss item on the menu. So we finally decided to ask the staff what they would recommend. We highly suggest you try the chicken and/or vegetarian burritos, as well as the quesadilla.

Shawarma Twist
Within the vast shadow of Mall of the Emirates hides Al Barsha Boutique, home to a fresh, upcoming and trendy diner-themed restaurant offering a twist on the classic shawarma dish. We had the pleasant opportunity to try out 10 of Shawarma Twist’s mouth-watering dishes—ranging from the chicken, beef and fish shawarma options, through the underrated choco twists and knefehs spring rolls, to the healthier option, being a Fattoush salad. Each proved to be incomparable in flavour given the options available elsewhere. Nevertheless, what makes Shawarma Twist truly unique is the preparation the meat goes through. Imported from the distant land of Australia, the meat in the shawarmas has no fat added to it, thus making it lighter when compared to the usual shawarmas we have become accustomed to. In terms of the chicken shawarmas, the chicken stays closer to home; Shwarma Twist is the only joint offering Emirati chicken in its dishes. Personally, we recommend the burger shawarma, as it truly offers a modern twist to shawarmas as it comes with a different type of bread, with the exact taste of shawarma but the feel of a burger. With an affordable price of approximately AED 70 for two people, Shawarma Twist proves to be a hidden gem in every way.

The burritos were stuffed with rice and beans, and balanced by fresh sour cream, tomato and guacamole, which makes all the difference in the world. The quesadilla was delicious as well and was made of creamy beans, avocados, tomatoes, and onions, which provided a slight crunch. To top it all off, the delicious ingredients were held together by a warm layer of melted cheese. The place was delightful and truly did justice to its reputation as "the UAE’s best tacos and burritos.” It’s definitely a Mexican restaurant that is not to be missed out on. Adios!

The Pantry Café If you’re on the lookout for a modern yet utterly trendy spot then Pantry Café is the place for you. The open, industrial-style ceiling, metallic accessories, grey cement walls, brick-lay shelves, and the splash of green provided by potted plants established a sense of serenity in the otherwise bustling café. We started out with the creamy vegetable potage, smartly paired with a crispy herbed toast on the side. This potato-based soup had complex, oniony undertones and was potent and indulgent without being heavy or gluggy. For appetisers, we first ordered the avocado bruschetta, which included mashed avocado on sourdough bread, charred goat cheese, tomato salsa.

Scafa Scafa is Dubai's School of Culinary and Finishing Arts, but it is also a beautiful restaurant that wows patrons with bold pairings and dishes that keep changing. Each dish is unique and special—down from the watermelon and cheese starters to the teriyaki glazed sweet potatoes. Scafa does an extremely odd yet truly satisfying blend of dishes. One that we tried was the crispy prawn, coated in black and white quinoa, which was served on a bed of mashed avocado. This was served with home-style bread, glazed with a generous swirl of orange-lemon and parsley butter. For the main course, we ordered the grilled chicken, which offered a medley of spices, while the lamb was tender and melded well with the clouds of mashed potato and wild Romesco sauce. The meal ended with a well-presented deconstructed passion fruit cheesecake that balanced well with the chocolate sponge cake that was glazed with toffee and peanut butter. With each dish looking like an artist's canvas, we hesitated to eat them right away, however that would be a very foolish mistake.
The star of the main course was the wagyu beef lasagne, a deceptively simple dish which was mouth watering tasty. Layers of tender, slow-cooked meat with béchamel, Parmigiano Reggiano and Neapolitan sauce produced an intense and wholesome dish that was more than just a simple lasagne. The pumpkin and spinach risotto is a solid vegetarian option. This glutenfree dish, which came with goat cheese fondue, crispy sage and tomato concasse, was well seasoned, simple and sophisticated. Finally, for dessert, we ordered the English toffee cheesecake, which was not overly sweet. The cheese was soft and pillowy but not too heavy and the taste was absolutely divine. What more could you want?

Teen Spends $25K To Buy Hundreds Of Shoes For Others
World's Oldest Person Emma Morano Celebrates 117th Birthday
Drew Frank, a teen from Texas, could have used the thousands of dollars he got for his thirteenth birthday on himself. He is crazy about expensive kicks and could have bought a car with the money. Instead, Drew outfitted an entire elementary school in a lower income neighbourhood of El Paso with new Nikes. He also donated shoes and socks to a local orphanage and a YWCA transitional living centre for women and children, with help from the Braden Aboud Foundation.
When Emma Morano was born, Umberto I was still reigning over Italy, Fiat had only just been established and the Milan Football Club was still a few weeks from creation. Morano, the oldest of eight siblings, all of whom she has outlived, was born on 29 November 1899, in the Piedmont region of Italy. Morano's longevity, she admits, is partly down to genetics—her mother reached 91, and several sisters reached their centenary—and partly, she claims, down to a rather unusual diet of three eggs—two raw—each day for more than 90 years.

There's Something Meaty About The UK’s New Five Pound Note The UK's new fiver has won many fans since it was launched in September, given it's durable and doesn't tear. You can spill coffee on it, put it through the washing machine and it will survive to buy another round. But it turns out it's not fat-free. Apparently the plastic polymer contains small amounts of tallow, derived from animal waste products—and some vegetarians are not happy.
Toxin-Absorbing Grass Could Clean Up Millions of Polluted Acres
Mobile Phone App Is Helping The Blind Be My Eyes, a Danish-developed smartphone app, connects via a live-streaming camera to thousands of so-called ‘helpers’. The app is the brainchild of Hans Jørgen Wiberg, who suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, and realised smartphones were equipped with all the technology needed to give instant help to blind people or those with visual impairments. So far, developers say they have been overwhelmed by willing helpers. Almost 400,000 people have downloaded the app in the hope of “lending” their sight.
In a paper published online this November in the Plant Biotechnology Journal, researchers from the University of Washington and University of York describe a new transgenic grass species that can neutralise and eradicate RDX, a toxic compound that has been widely used in explosives since World War II. Washington engineers introduced two genes from bacteria that learned to eat RDX and break it down into the components of two perennial grass species: switchgrass (panicum virgatum) and creeping bentgrass (agrostis stolonifera). The bestperforming strains removed all the RDX from a simulated soil where they were planted as seedlings two weeks earlier, and they retained none of the toxic chemicals in their leaves or stems.
Alaska Airlines Makes History With First Bio-Fueled Commercial Flight Alaska Airlines made history this November when it completed the first commercial aeroplane flight powered by renewable biofuel. The flight went from Seattle Tacoma International Airport to Reagan National Airport in Washington DC using a blend of jet fuel made from forest residuals such as branches and bark. The excess biomass left over from forest thinning is typically piled and burned. The forest residuals for the fuel were all collected from sustainably managed forests in the Pacific Northwest.

After a rather busy and challenging year, you will be pleased to know that it ends with a happy, fun month. Probably best to get as much work done before you feel unmotivated (as far as work is concerned) to deal with mundane affairs. It’s a favourable time to invest in art, jewellery or stocks and shares to do with retail or the entertainment industry.
The pressure is finally off, and you can finally breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the holidays. This will be a very sentimental holiday season for you, and it's one in which you will seek to make a link to the past. You may receive family heirlooms or old photo albums. Later on, things will get super busy after the 20th of the month, so be prepared for a mad dash.
Feeling original, full of fizz and full of life—what a terrific way to end the year. Your strong willpower, creative ability, and motivation to get things done fast will see a very productive end to 2016. December will be a very busy month for you, as you will have lots on the go, as well as quite a few exciting, lastminute events to attend.
Logical reasoning, the ability to think and act quickly and to be unbiased are key attributes in December 2016. You will not be drawn into emotional discussions but take an impartial standpoint as you are very level-headed and informed by the bigger picture. This mental clarity will help to bring a neat and sound resolution to matters of business and pleasure for the year-end.
LEO

SCORPIO
Dear Leo, money and investments are a theme in December 2016. This is not the month to ruin relationships by lending out anything material that you value, as you are not likely to get it back. Also, be careful of your health and important deadlines as you may be a little disappointed in the results. Sudden déjà vu and a strong feeling about a person or a money matter should not be ignored.
In December 2016, you will be quite mischievous, and your sense of humour is also in top gear. You might feel creative and may take up work involving crafts such as card making, woodwork, or pottery. You will be quite impulsive this month so be sure to keep all your receipts as make sure you check the return policies, so at least, if you do have a change of mind, you can return unwanted purchases.
Have faith in your own visions, beliefs and goals and stick to them. Be your own cheerleader and do not wait for approval nor support from others. Go with your gut and go for it. Live your own truth and don’t be challenged or coerced into conforming. This is a great time to set goals to work towards next year. Write down lists and draw up timetables to take steps towards these goals.
Doing things for others and making this holiday season special is important to you. You may volunteer somewhere to help people who are ill, homeless or destitute this month. Your desire to help others and to be part of something worthwhile is a driver in many of the things you. Leave time and energy aside to reach an agreement with yourself about money, property, business or goods.

December begins in a lively and upbeat manner, however you will feel the urge to break through old ideas and beliefs that no longer serve you. In other words, this is a month of monumental breakthroughs in conventional belief systems. These may be to do with politics, or they could be down to your own personal philosophies on life.
The sixth sense is a big part of this month and it is keeping you safe. You are very creative with a camera and may re-discover a love for photography or making films. In fact, a camera or camcorder is a great idea for your Christmas present. You may begin to take pictures seriously or as a hobby. It is even a good idea to start a YouTube channel to enhance your skills.
You need to be careful about your purchases this season, so be sure that you are not duped into what looks like an amazing offer, but which has hidden extras or hidden terms which you are not fully aware of. Think twice before you buy anything that is technical, or comes with an onerous contract. Look after your health; this is a good time for a check-up and to take control of any issues.
December could be a rather frustrating month, so you'll need to be patient and organised in order to achieve what you aim to. More haste, less speed is the motto. Be diligent and work consistency towards your end-of-year goals and tie things up properly. Make time for fun goals, events that you can look forward to next year and catch up with old friends.
