Wow, this month has gone by in a blast. I can not believe that we are officially getting into November 2016. Where has all the time gone? Thinking about time truly reminds you of what's important. To our cover star, Shaikha, that is health. It is something we young peeps take for granted, and that is why I have absolutely loved talking to Shaikha as she truly is a gem of a person and is making such a difference in the UAE. Within issue 45 of one8one, we have compiled some great content that you absolutely shouldn't miss. We have an an interview with Naomi D'Souza, Dubai's very own dessert queen. We've also scoped out some of the most unusual professions that you won't believe you can actually get paid to do. We are also quite excited to attend the fall concerts, and, from a style point of view, we have some great looks for both the guys and the gals. I would also like to urge everyone to download the 'get it' app. It is super easy to use, all you need to do is: •Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store •Search for 'get it - scan. read. buy' •Download our 'get it' app •Create your account •Click on the scan button to easily shop for products, watch videos, trailers, tutorials and so much more •You can also easily share these videos on your social media accounts or save to your profile •Voila, now you 'get it' (get it?)

The DUFF
I Am Ali
Selma
Cast: Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell
Cast: Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Ali Jnr, Hana Ali
Cast: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth
A coming-of-age movie about a high school senior, Bianca, who is struck by a moral epiphany when she learns that her classmates refer to her as the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier and popular peers. Desperate to reinvent her image, she seeks help from Wesley, a school heart throb to build her reputation in order to fit in.
The documentary provides an insight into Mohammad Ali's own audio journals, and includes input from friends and family members. The movie revolves around the world's greatest boxer's career and when he came to prominence inside the ring and in the public. It also offers a view of his struggles with family and his battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Selma is the transient biopic of Dr. Martin Luther king and his struggle to attain voting rights for all people. Adamantly driven, MLK sets out to different states for protest through speech, despite opposition. The story covers the historical events and dangers MLK faced, leading up to his epic march from Selma to Montgomery, a battleground for the civil rights movement, resulting in the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Learn a new language
Hola! Ciao! Hala Habibi In today's day and age, it is quite important and beneficial to learn a new language. Just being able to have a simple conversation in itself in another language reaps huge rewards; learning a second language opens up a variety of career opportunities. Here are seven ways to help you learn a new language.
3 2 1
FIND YOUR WHY Finding your why is very crucial when starting this new adventure; the why will help you to stay motivated in the long term.
see it. scan it. get it.
PRACTICE ON YOURSELF Try to speak and think in a different language as it will help you think on your feet. In addition, it is easier to recall important words and phrases that can be kept fresh in your mind. This will help you to build confidence when you actually do speak to someone.
PHONE A FRIEND Ask your friend, sibling or colleague to join you on your language adventure. Having a helping hand will help you to stay committed as it will create a healthy competitionbetween the two of you.
6 5 4
JUST DO IT Just focus on putting what you have actually learned into practice, whether that's writing an email, speaking to yourself, listening to music, or listening to the radio. Immerse yourself into the new culture and language, and if possible try to travel to that country for an exchange programme.
WATCH YOUR MOUTH Different languages make different demands on your tongue, lips, and throat. Pronunciation is just as much physical as it is mental. We recommend watching foreign-language films and their respective TV shows as a good substitute.
KEEP IT RELEVANT Make conversation the goal from the beginning; that way you are less likely to get lost. Talking to people will keep the learning process relevant to you, and prove to be more useful and great for everyday conversations.
7
SORRY, NOT SORRY Be okay with making silly mistakes along the way and be ready to put yourself in potentially embarrassing situations. This can be scary, but it’s the only way to develop and improve.

Pop-Up Stores
POP-UPS ON A BUDGET So it looks like you caught the entrepreneurial bug, and are you are interested in starting your own business. What better way to start out than to create your own little pop-up shop? They are great as there are no long-term leases, commitments, overhead costs, employee wages or other major costs. That being said, they’re definitely not a cash-free venture. Pop-ups go hand in hand with their own set of expenses, so how can you launch a high-impact pop-up while still keeping costs in check? Read on for our insider tips on how to do pop-ups on a budget.
Be Mindful Of The 7% Rule
Wondering whether or not you can afford to launch a pop-up? As a general rule of thumb, calculate 7% of your gross monthly revenue, and decide whether this is enough to cover the costs of venue hire, merchandising, advertising, staff and so on.
see it. scan it. get it.
Think Small Does the sheer thought of launching a pop-up store overwhelm you? When you’re first starting off, the key is to start small and build your pop-up presence as you gain experience. Yes, some branded pop-ups are extravagant and expensive. But they don’t have to be. Everything can be done on a budget, so don’t be disheartened just because you don’t have a big bottom line to back your venture.
DIY Design Rather than splash out on a visual merchandiser and interior designer to pimp your pop-up, try your hand at creating your own unique look. Use your space to tell a brand story, with a balance of merchandised inventory, and strategic lifestyle elements that create atmosphere, flow, and engagement.
Collaborate With Other Retailers Enrich the customer experience, share the costs of renting retail space and split the responsibility of store hours by collaborating with other merchants. Hone in on retailers that complement your business, and build mutually beneficial relationships that heighten your message, and amplify your ability to reach a responsive audience.
Monitor Peak Hours Actively track traffic within your pop-up store and use your findings to tailor staff schedules accordingly. During quiet times, there’s no need for multiple customer service assistants. However, when traffic peaks it could be worth your while to pay an extra employee. Your wage budget will be higher, but they’ll likely boost sales and soon pay for themselves.
Be A Guerrilla Marketer Get social media-savvy and use platforms like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram to shout about your pop-up. It’s pretty much free PR and can get visitor numbers soaring. You can also try reaching out to local bloggers, contacting regional newspapers and co-market with other stores. Want to have your own pop-up? Unusual Professions That Pay Surprisingly Well
It seems as though we can pay people to do almost anything for us these days: walk our dogs, build our furniture, organise our homes, be our fake friends when we're feeling lonely and so on. Here's a list of the most unusual professions to have ever existed.
Flavourist Flavourists are chemists who formulate both natural and artificial flavours. They usually have a PhD in biochemistry or chemistry, and intern with flavour companies in addition to their formal schooling. Now we know who to thank for cool, new, weird flavours.
Online Reviewer Thanks to reviewing sites like Zomato and TripAdvisor, the internet has become a highly valuable resource for people looking to get a sense of a restaurant, hotel, or product they might be interested in purchasing. We have all Googled something at one point or the other, but be warned that a lot of what you see would potentially be fake as people are paid to write reviews.
Horticultural Therapist Horticulture therapy, also known as ecopsychology, is the use of plants, and the process of planting, in psychological or physical therapy. These therapists use the healing power of gardening as either a treatment strategy for troubled patients or as a physical strengthening tactic for patients in occupational therapy.
Professional Bridesmaid
Fortune Cookie Writer

Fortune cookie writer is an actual paying job, done by real people! Fortune cookie manufacturers usually hire freelancers or inhouse writers to come up with inspiring or witty fortunes, and these writers can earn up to $40,000 a year.
Professional bridesmaids became really popular to assist bridezillas (a crazy bride with a mindset of a Godzilla) on their big day. A lot of companies offer this undercover personal assistant-type service from about $300 to $2,000 per wedding. They help you plan and run errands and do all the dirty work that even a friend wouldn't do.
Dog Surf Instructor Surfing is not just for humans anymore; there are people that will pay a bunch of money for private lessons to help teach dog owners and their dogs to surf. These instructors can usually be found in high-end ocean resorts and some resorts even offer classes strictly for dogs.

Hale Education Group is the leading independent education consultancy focused exclusively on US University admissions in the region. Professional Cuddler Professional cuddlers are all the rage these days and can easily charge up to $80 an hour to snuggle with strangers. The downside: it comes with its share of emotional burden and of course you'll have to hug the occasional weirdo.

Dubai Design Week
Like Never Before Scan to watch video
The design community in Dubai was recently booming with the largest celebration of design and creativity in the Middle East, collectively underlining Dubai’s rich and multi-faceted design landscape. When Dubai Design Week kicked off on 24 October, design professionals, residents, and visitors were able to engage in more than 150 events over six days in Dubai Design District (d3) and across the city. Local retailers, design brands, galleries, universities and institutions, along with independent events, exhibitions or installations throughout Dubai, invited visitors to discover design by exploring new neighbourhoods and reconnecting with the more familiar. Visitors were able to view the creative heart of the industrial Dubai through DRAK at Ras-AlKhor; watch artisans at work and push the door to open studios in d3; and wander through Alserkal Avenue and Al Quoz, stopping off for chocolate tours, gemology seminars, machine building and more. From opportunities to shop cutting-edge designs in Jumeriah’s concept stores, to attending a number of events on and off campus where students could learn essentials skills to thrive within the design industry, there was something for everyone.

Motivation
HOW TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF Why are we so good at deciding on what to do but so terrible at actually doing those things? And why does procrastination come so easily to us? Here are some tips on how to overcome laziness and procrastination.
see it. scan it. get it.
Be Positive
Make It Fun
Research shows happiness increases productivity and makes you more successful. Chant your mantra, set yourself a bunch of goals and monitor your improvement. Optimism is a vital part of motivation. Write down all the things you want to do and review them every night to see whether you are a step closer to achieving your goals. Whether you want to lose weight, join a sports team or study, positivity will get you where you desire.
Frankly speaking, doing something you flat-out despise won't be something you keep up with. The second you can drop it like a bad habit, you will. We all do it. For that reason, whatever you're doing—be it saving up money for that new car or losing 15 pounds—you have to make it enjoyable. The more enjoyable it is, the more you'll do it. The more you'll do it, the better you'll get at it. The better you get at it, the quicker the end result will come. For example, if you hate running, try dancing. The result will still be an improved physique.
Eliminate Distractions Try figuring out what are your main distractions. Are they really worth doing instead of your goals? No, right? Whether your distraction is a video game or TV show, we recommend you take some time off or limit the amount of time you give to them. It’s only temporarily. You will survive, don’t worry.
Get Fresh Air Go for a walk every day. Studies show that taking a walk (especially in natural settings) helps restore the brain’s ability to block distractions because it allows the mind to wander. Give your brain a rest from all your electronic devices. Overcome that laziness and be surprised when you see boosted test results or other things you have always wanted to achieve.
Get Rewarded Research shows that rewards are responsible for three-quarters of why you do things. Whenever you cross off an item from your list, reward yourself to whatever your heart desires. This way, you will be encouraged to keep on crossing things off on that to-do list.
Get Peer Pressure Peer pressure? What? Relax, research shows peer pressure helps kids more than it hurts them. Surround yourself with people you want to be like. Like, the smartest person in the class. You will know what to do to get to where they currently are and that is a great way to motivate yourself to get up to their level.
Start Out Small If you want to achieve your goals then you have to take it one step at a time. You cannot run to the finish line before you have done a few laps. Take your own time as it will be worth every minute.

Reasons to intern withone8one
Top 10 Reasons to Intern with
We are the youth of the UAE and one8one magazine is our medium through which we share our ideas, thoughts and other talented people’s work. When interning for us we don't just want people who are interested in writing, but we appreciate people who have a wide variety of interests. In the past, we have had people who are talented in graphic design, art, psychology, art, drawing, marketing, and so much more. Here are 10 reasons why we believe you should intern for us!
Meet new people
EXPERIENCE NEW THINGS
People who intern for one8one are young, cool and lively. If you’ve ever feared being stuck in a room with boring colleagues, this environment will expel those feelings faster than you can read this sentence. Everyone in the office was relatable. There’s plenty of jokes to go around, pens in our hands and pizzas in our mouths.
You work for one8one, you work for the media, baby! That automatically translates into getting passes for all the coolest events in the UAE. That also includes reviewing new and upcoming restaurants, having a blast at entertainment/gaming centers and getting premiere passes to all the latest and greatest.

BE CREATIVE
GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE
We’ll make you think until you pass out. So you need to write an article on soaps. Mate, it’s not going to sell unless you work your magic and turn it into something like; ‘Did you know soaps were initially made by boiling animal fat?’ They want to know where you can find soap shaped like spiderman’s head and which famous movie featured the soap you use daily!
Just when you think it’s starting to sound too good to be true, here is where I stop you. Of course, there is work involved. You have to edit, research, write, interview, review, call, speak and persuade.
THERE'S A PLACE FOR EVERYONE
BOOST YOUR RESUME
You will never feel forced to work on something you hate. If you love fashion, that’s where you’re assigned, if you love eating, you’ll go around tasting food. You can do what you like and if it isn’t something generic, that’s better! Create your own category, we’d appreciate it.
It’s going to blow someone’s mind when they read that you’ve worked for us. It really does look great on a CV when you have a variety of interesting internships. Working for a magazine will help give your resume the push it needs.
POTENTIAL TO GET A FULL-TIME JOB If you consistently produce quality work, bring in cool new ideas, you have a strong shot at being hired by the company and getting paid! If this is your dream job, interning at one8one might just get you places.
THE ULTIMATE WORKPLACE
WE HAVE POKEMON IN THE OFFICE!
Working at one8one is so chill, we have crazy art and sofas all over the place and music blasting from speakers. Your brain will literally jump out of your body with the kind of energy you find here. It’s the place that gets your juices flowing. Because it’s essential that your juices flow…
As usual, we save the best for last. You never know where you’ll find a Pokemon but I can assure you, I’ve caught quite a few in the office. If what you’ve read so far hasn’t convinced you, this definitely should!
AN INSIGHT INTO REAL LIFE WORK If you are a teenager like me, you have no idea what it's like to get up at six in the morning during vacations and go to work. one8one allows you to experience what it is to work for a creative agency, and at the same time allowing you the freedom to sit down on the floor with a laptop in a circle with your colleagues who will soon turn into amazing friends.

Food Blogger
Dubai's Dessert Queen Naomi D'Souza
A mechanical engineer by profession, 22-year-old Naomi D’Souza has been labelled “Dubai’s Dessert Queen” for having tried almost every single dessert available in Dubai. D’Souza works at the prestigious IBM as an associate consultant while studying to complete her masters in energy. Naomi is an ambitious, hardworking and exceptional person, who gives us a unique perspective on what it’s like for young women to manage their work life and passion simultaneously.
Did you like engineering? How do you find your new job? I adore it. Honestly, if I hadn’t found a better opportunity, I would still be working as an engineer but my new job is amazing. It’s a creative job which is more into designing and marketing. I love them both and don’t think I could ever choose between the two. How do you like being a food blogger? How did it all start? People think I planned it but, honestly, it was just a coincidence. Just as anyone would, I went on vacation and posted pictures of some of the desserts I tasted on Instagram and surprisingly people loved it. Soon I started exploring different places and reviewing them and after a while, I realised this was an opportunity for me to do something different. There weren’t too many food bloggers then, which is probably why blogging kicked off for me. People started to find my reviews interesting and many brands started approaching me. That’s how it started. Soon hotels started approaching me and then gyms, and that’s how resorts and lifestyle started.
Do you think you would ever leave your job to do this full-time? No, not for the next few years. I need to keep a stable job with a stable income and I recommend everyone to do that. Yes, there is a lot of income when it comes to blogging but then again, it isn’t secure. Today. bloggers are budding like mushrooms hence there’s no guarantee of a stable income at the end of the month. Do you get any free time? I actually don’t. To the outside world my life may seem perfect but if you really think about it, I work from 9am to 6pm, then head to university, keep up with my website and then try to balance my personal life within the mix as well. What’s your all-time favourite dessert? Do you keep any expectations when you try new desserts? My favourites are the Molten Lava Cake from Chilis, Hit Me Chocolate Cake from Catch Dubai and Lotus Drama from Parkers. The problem I face, having tasted so many desserts, is that, once you have tried the best, you compare all desserts to that and you tend to have a high expectation which may not get fulfilled.

Travel
This summer, my family and I had one of our best and most adventurous vacations—a seven-day Alaskan cruise. After embarking on the Celebrity Millennium in Vancouver, we spent a day relaxing at sea sailing towards the Inside Passage. After this much-needed day of rest, we were super-amped and ready to reach our first port of call, Ketchikan, AK. It was guaranteed to rain in Ketchikan, so I happily broke out my new rain coat along with my boots. But, guess what? It didn’t rain at all and turned out to be a sunny day. Since Ketchikan is known as the salmon capital of the world, we saw plenty of souvenir shops selling salmon-shaped trinkets. We arrived at 6am—our ship was the first one to port that day. The town was slowly coming to life as we left the ship, but we enjoyed our first peaceful moments among these tranquil views. The weather was quintessential Ketchikan that day—slightly cool with a gentle mist in the air.

Juneau We had so much fun in Ketchikan, walking through the streets, that I thought it would be hard to top, but Juneau turned out to be extraordinary, too. We trailed on a road for half a mile, and then we saw The Nugget Falls with the beautiful Mendenhall Glacier at the back. On our way back, we got to play with puppies. These newbies were only a few weeks old and weren’t even named. I may have tried to place one in my backpack and take it home. All in all, Juneau felt surreal. Later in the evening, we boarded our ship again to take on the next day’s adventure in Skagway. Skagway My last port on this trip was beautiful Skagway. The weather was much cooler than that in Juneau. My family and I took a bus tour of the Yukon Territory, where we could see the astonishing snow-filled mountains alongside other lush, green mountains. After this we spent time discovering the town, which was tiny but super-cute with a population of just 1,000 people. On our last day, we got the witness the dumbfounding Hubbard Glacier, which truly made us breathless. After seven amazing days at sea, it was time to disembark in Seward and make our way up to Anchorage for the last leg of our adventure. Rather than heading directly to Anchorage, we arranged an all-day tour to do some additional sightseeing (we also spotted bears). Everything was so pristine, quiet and magnificently beautiful when we landed that it felt like we were transported to another world.

Many people end up going to car dealerships even before researching about what they want, which is fine until they meet the salesman who offers them the deal of a lifetime. Before they know it, they are driving off in their shiny new purchase, without even thinking about how they are going to pay for it. If you are thinking about buying a car, it pays to be prepared. You don't want your pride and joy to become a source of financial stress, hence setting a budget is crucial. Check out these handy tips before you purchase your car.
Can I afford the repayments? If the repayments are going to eat up most of your budget, after food and accommodation, perhaps you need to set your sights lower. A good rule for calculating all car expenses, including repayments, is that they should not exceed 20 percent of your wage. Another option might be to drive an older vehicle that you own outright while you save for the car of your dreams. If you are able to wait, you will save a lot of money on interest by paying for all or most of your car upfront.
What are the servicing costs for this model? There is a lot of variation between models when it comes to servicing. Larger vehicles, luxury imports and performance vehicles will be more expensive to service and maintain, but there can be nasty surprises amongst unlikely contenders too. It's a good idea to research the cost of services and ask what they cover; some services don't cover certain parts, which will be an extra outlay. Research the cost of commonly replaced parts or items. Some vehicles use prohibitively expensive engine oil, for example, and maintenance items such as oil filters, air filters, and fuel pumps cost far more for some models than others.
see it. scan it. get it.
What are the running costs? Knowing the running costs of the vehicle you are interested in can save you from unexpected expenses after you buy it. Read the fine print; some cars require more frequent services than others, and if you are thinking of doing some of the services yourself to save money, you will probably find that doing so voids your warranty. Fuel costs are often a large portion of the weekly budget, especially if you do a lot of driving. Knowing the car's fuel consumption rate before you buy it will allow you to decide if you can afford this particular car or not.
What is the insurance? Insurance can be surprisingly expensive, depending on the age and condition of the vehicle, the age of the driver, and the type of vehicle. Young drivers may have to pay a premium price for insurance, while performance vehicles, models with a poor safety record or high theft rate may cost more to insure. Do your homework before you buy, and avoid a nasty shock.

ESTHER EDEN Scan to watch video
Ever since she opened for Jessie J at Red Fest DXB 2014, Esther Eden’s trajectory has been incredible. She’s been signed to Universal Music Middle East, she’s played in front of 15,000 people, released two singles and a music video, and, to top it all off, get this—she’s only 18 years old. We sit down with Eden to talk to her about her music and her quick rise to local stardom.
Has singing always been your passion? No, it hasn’t! I used to like dancing when I was a kid. My dad got me my first guitar when I was 13. I learned to play it in a week and posted a cover of 'I’m Yours' by Jason Mraz on YouTube. I got some good feedback and haven't stop posting covers since then. I’ve heard that you have quite the success story. How did you go from posting covers on YouTube to getting signed by Universal Music? I heard that Jessie J was coming to our school. Just a week before, luckily, I had written my first original song, Is This Love, so I performed it for her. Since she liked it, she invited me to sing it at RedFest DXB 2014. I got to perform in front of 15,000 people. After that, I continued to write my music and approached Universal Music. They liked my music so much that they signed me.
What’s on your playlist? I love Ed Sheeran—he’s one of my main inspirations. I also listen to Selena Gomez and James Bay. And have you heard of BORNS? BORNS is pretty cool right now. Do you have a favourite musical memory? I think I’ve had a lot of amazing memories like performing in front of 12,000 to 15,000 people and then having small intimate concerts. But I think my favourite would have to be when I went on a community service trip to Sri Lanka and got to perform for cancer patients. They were all singing and dancing along. That was pretty nice. What do you hope to accomplish as a performer? What’s the dream? I’m the kind of person who loves making people happy with what I can do, which is music. So I hope that I can do that on an international level and perform for people all around the world and make them happy.

SHAIKHA AL QASSEMI My heroes are those who get out of bed every morning and follow their dreams.

Shaikha Al Qassemi is a 27-year-old Crossfit athlete who started her journey in 2013 with the aim of trying something different and living a better lifestyle. With that goal in mind, she encourages individuals to live a healthier and active lifestyle so that they can put their best feet forward, make a meaningful impact and reduce widespread ailments such as obesity and diabetes that have become common within the younger generations of the UAE. Check out her powerful interview and get ready to be wowed.
What is your biggest accomplishment in Crossfit? Every day is a big accomplishment—getting out of bed, getting to the gym, sticking to a regime, training and setting goals for each day. I usually train once or twice a day depending on how I am feeling, and my regime is very demanding on my body, so when I achieve my goals that is the biggest accomplishment. How do you set goals? I set goals based on different competitions that I am competing in, as every competition has different goals. Once I know what is expected I create them and read them when I wake up and go to bed. Every moment is spent focusing and working towards that goal. I also like to visualise how I will train and like to write my goals down. That way, when I practice, I work towards that specific number.
What differentiates you from other athletes? I think it’s the willingness to make a change in the UAE. Based on my social media following, you can see that people are receptive to change. My main motivation is to inspire women to lift weights and not be worried about having muscles here and there. I would love to see more young adults and mothers start training, be it using CrossFit or any other form of exercise. I want more people to live a stronger and healthier life and make a change for the better.
What is your diet like? I don't like to follow any one diet because I am tolerant to some things and intolerant towards other food items. I just try to focus on living a healthy lifestyle. I do enjoy cheat meals every now and then. I do like to keep my vitamins and supplements in order and make sure to get all the necessary fats, proteins and nutrients that I require based on my training needs.

Do you have any recommended resources that you would urge people to read or watch? I recommend everyone to read a book called Who Says You Can’t? You Do! This is a book written by Daniel Chidiac and has completely changed my life. It has changed the way I think, lead my life, present myself—it is honestly one of the best books that I have read. After reading the first ten pages, I went back and bought another twenty books and gave them away to everyone and told them that this book is going to change the way you live your life. What was the best advice you have ever been given? The best advice came from my brother in 2014 when I was just about to quit everything I had worked so hard for. I wanted to stop competing and not be a public figure anymore. That was right around the time I started getting noticed and started getting a lot of backlash from people. That caused me to delete my personal Instagram account before I created my current account, which is kikiforcrossfit. That is when my brother told me if you do something good people are going to talk; if you do something bad people are going to talk; and if you do nothing at all people will still talk. That is when I made peace with the situation and told myself that this is their opinion and that they are entitled to their own and that it shouldn't affect my own mental sanity and peace. Where do you draw inspiration from? I draw my inspiration from all of my followers—every single message, comment, email, or letter inspires me. Whenever they tell me that I have encouraged them to go to the gym, that I have changed their life, and brightened their day and brought a smile to their face, that is when I feel more inspired to be a better athlete and a better person.

Stay in school, study hard and just give your body an hour a day.
What kind of songs do you listen to when you work out? I don't have a specific song that I listen to, however I listen to a specific playlist that I have, which is songs from the 1990s and the 2000s. The playlist is about an hour-and-ahalf and that is when I wouldn't want to stop working out as it has all the best moments from my high school and college. However, on a regular basis, I listen to rock, RnB, hip-hop, or whatever's on the radio. Who are your heroes and why? My heroes are those who get out of bed every morning and follow their dreams. My heroes are also the mothers that have a full schedule and still train, people who don't have an anatomy and still manage to work out. People who don't make excuses, who train their hardest every single day, make time for their families and friends and spread the love around, these are my heroes.

Athlete games 2016 What advice do you have for people who want to start living an active lifestyle? Firstly, don't take anything too seriously, don't stress out about the numbers and how you are not progressing towards that goal that you have set. Just have fun, enjoy the journey towards physical fitness, stay in school, study hard and just give your body an hour a day. Secondly, find a gym that offers training for young people. That way you know that they will focus on you based on your timings, goal requirements and will work with you in the best possible manner.

ALICIA GOVEAS
Twenty-three-year-old Alicia Goveas is an insanely talented artist based in Dubai, who expresses her art in mindboggling forms including jaw-dropping transformations, hilarious caricature portraits, creative faces, body art and beautiful henna designs. You may have even mistaken her for former One Direction band member Zayn Malik after she transformed herself into the star and strolled through the Mall of the Emirates flanked by bodyguards. Here are some of the highlights from an interview we had with her. How did you get started as a make-up artist? I used to do a lot of promo jobs at events and in this one event, they happened to be in need of a face painter and I was literally put on the spot and had no other choice than to be creative and just go for it. I really picked up from there and watched a lot of YouTube tutorials, practiced on myself, invested in some good materials and it was the best decision I ever made. What do you love most about make-up and body art transformations? I think what I love most is, when I start out with a piece, I envision it a certain way, but it turns out completely different and I think that’s very interesting because the whole process is something I learn from. Plus, I just love the idea of combining art and make-up and producing one amazing piece. What was your favourite transformation and why? My favourite was when I transformed myself into Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones because that involved sticking on an actual beard and it was quite challenging but it turned out amazing and I was pretty proud of how it looked!

Brainscape Being trapped in a room and having a crucial object to retrieve in order to escape really does bring out a side in you that you may never have thought existed—good or bad. Located on Bay Avenue, Brainscape is the perfect spot to experience this discovery with your friends or workmates who may live at both ends of the city—making it a perfect in-between hangout spot with comparatively better prices (the prices differ depending on the day of week and number of players). Brainscape focuses more on the thinking aspect of escape games rather than the technological, unlike other games available in Dubai. In terms of how the puzzles played out, they were rather doable. We were put in a room surrounded by a back story and no clue as to what was about to happen. Despite the eerie suspense of not knowing anything, hilarity ensues when you realise it is you who is exaggerating everything in the room. Definitely, there's a humorous factor in finding out that a piece of plastic found on the floor isn’t a part of the game. This is the perfect place to get your mind working as well as have a good time with your friends and colleagues. Besides, it is indoors so why not give it a try? Investment: From AED 105 to AED 125

Phobia A more technologically driven game in comparison to Brainscape, Phobia is the epitome of an adrenalin rush. Hidden behind the high-rise buildings of Jumeirah Lakes Towers, buried in the Red Diamond Building, the fear of Phobia lurks. The fear that surges within a technologically advanced escape game gives you a thrill incomparable to anything you’ve ever felt. The adrenaline hit falls along lines of unforgettable. Vault 13, being the one which my team and I were lucky enough to try out, was a post-nuclear war scenario where being trapped in a ‘safe’ underground vault seemed to appear more threatening than being outside. The story was exciting, the music wrapped it all together, and the darkness of the scenario definitely shed light on the plot’s strong suits. The set-up is easy enough to go through as a team, but eerie enough to keep you away from the obvious. Much like Brainscape, the chances of humorously mistaking a fallen earring as an ally to your answers are high. For a price of AED 95 per person, the experience and decor of the room are definitely worth much more.

Restaurant Review
Treasure Chest Seven of our boldest and toughest writers were sent on a mission—to locate and devour the biggest dessert in Dubai. Dubai’s Treasure Chest, uncovered at Serendipity 3, was our identified target. We were committed. We planned our strike, ran a few laps and even skipped lunch, but nothing could prepare us for the massive monster of a dessert that awaited us. We’d heard myths about the mammoth-sized portions at Serendipity 3 and they were all confirmed when The Dubai Treasure Chest (350 Dhs) made its appearance. There was a moment of silence while we stared at it for a full 10 minutes. Three generous slices of chocolate, red velvet, and carrot cake layered with cream cheese made up the base. Every bite was phenomenal. Between each slice, you’d find a colour sprinkled waffle cone brimming with whipped cream, M&Ms, fried Oreos, berries and chocolate bits, while whirls of whipped cream capped with a cherry filled every space. But that wasn’t it. Crowning this entire dessert was a chocolate treasure chest. And the treasure? A dozen scoops of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream. Cue the heavenly choir sound effects, please. We challenge you to visit this perky restaurant located at Citywalk 2 Dubai, freak out on the endless supply of desserts and share your experience with us.

Common Grounds If you’re looking for a cool place to chill and hang out with friends while being served by the friendliest staff you could possibly meet, this is the place for you. Newly opened at Mall of the Emirates Level 2, this brunch spot is effortlessly modern and devastatingly aesthetic. After we had spent sufficient time gawking at the exteriors and the espresso bar, we sat down to order drinks and started out with It’s Just Another Manic Mango, a tangy smoothie that had a healthy blend of acai, mango, and passion fruit. The coffee is a must-have, with plenty of options, such as filter coffee, using a syphon, aeropress or a chemex, available. Moving on to mains, our lovely server recommended the Jerk Chicken, one of the best sellers and we now know why. Fresh, flavourful and wholesome; the chicken was roasted to perfection. The slightly sweet bell peppers and roasted pimiento were the perfect escorts along with the bean and carrot slaw, tomato salsa, grilled corn, smoky spiced almonds and spicy potato wedges. We highly recommend the Prawn Tacos, which were served with perfectly crisp shells and prawns that came with red mojo sauce, feta cheese, roasted jalapeño, mango slaw and fresh herbs. To amp up the flavour, the dish even contained Evoo, a natural juice squeezed from olives one day after the harvest. For the vegetarians, we recommend the Veggie Rice Wrap, which came with a bunch of crunchy vegetables, glass noodles, herbs, sprouts, leaves and shredded nori. The zingy black sesame sauce, which was spread generously across the bottom of the platter, was the highlight of the dish. This dish definitely doesn’t leave you feeling incomplete.

Scoopi Cafe

Looshi's Tucked away in a cosy corner of Cluster Y in JLT, Looshi's is the place where all your sweet dreams come true. Upon entering, we were greeted by an aroma of chocolate and burnt sugar, which instantly warmed our senses. The small, quaint café has a laidback vibe and the decor is bright and colourful while staying minimalistic. In terms of service, Looshi’s did not fail to impress. Our server ensured all the desserts were packed to perfection, assisting and providing us with everything we required—even if, working in a takeaway cafe, she was not compelled to. It’s also surprisingly affordable, costing an average of AED 30 for two people, granting youngsters the ability to treat themselves a little. We recommend the following: The Brookie Melt: A perfect combination of salty and sweet. Fulfilling but not overwhelming. The saccharine, smooth caramel balanced well with the crunch of the salty pretzel. The gooey, luscious melted marshmallow literally melts upon your tongue. The Nutella Pie: Without a doubt, every Nutella lover’s heaven. Lavish dollops of Nutella mousse laid across a bed of biscuit crumbs—what more could one ask for? Although the mousse in the centre was rich, smooth and flavourful, the tart shell fell apart too easily.
Living in Dubai, you get used to everything bling, big and exorbitant. Just when we thought we had seen and heard it all, Scoopi Café created the Black Diamond Ice-Cream. Priced at AED 2,999, the scoop is the world’s most expensive ice-cream. The Black Diamond consists of vanilla ice-cream, which is infused with the world’s most expensive Iranian saffron and black truffles, which are garnished with 23-carat edible gold and served in a dreamy designer Versace bowl and spoon. Only 17 people have had the opportunity to try it out— and no, we weren’t one of those 17 to try it. However, we did try three of the basic flavours at Scoopi. The location was right outside the theatre, so anyone could relish a scoop of ice-cream before or after the movies. They had four flavours— Dark Chocolate, Italian Nutella, Mango Yoghurt, Mocha Espresso. Dark Chocolate with pecan nuts was thick, creamy and flavourful as ever. The scoop had a somewhat soft texture with pecan nuts as the toppings. The chocolate wasn’t dark enough for us and ended up tasting more like milk chocolate. That said, the combination of pecan nuts with chocolate made it crunchy and delightful to eat. All in all, we would give it an eight out of 10. Italian Nutella with rainbow sprinkles is Scoopi Café’s bestselling ice-cream, and it tasted fabulous and extremely chocolaty—just the way we like it. The rainbow sprinkles enhanced the flavour and presentation of the ice cream. It has rightly been named the bestseller, and we would rate it nine out 10. Mango Yoghurt with Ferrero Rocher was another flavour that we tried, and as weird as it sounds it just works. The combo revitalises you with just the right amount of fruit and chocolate, hence we would rate it eight out of 10.

The Lotus Cheesecake: A small, unassuming product but boy, does it pack a punch. The well-defined layers of rich cream, salty caramel and biscuit create an explosion of texture in your mouth. The flavours of the Lotus biscuit itself were also enhanced greatly by the accompaniments.

Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD), the region’s progressive fashion platform, endorsed by Dubai Design and Fashion Council (DDFC), and with Dubai Design District (d3) as Strategic Partner, took place from October 20 to 23 at the bespoke location, Hai d3. During its eighth season, FFWD showcased 31 regional ready-to-wear and couture designers as well as 14 accessory labels at The Showcase. Building upon the success of previous seasons and furthering its commitment to facilitate regional and international commercial visibility, FFWD partnered with Muriel Piaser Consulting to bring four international buyers representing department and concept stores to attend the shows. Each buyer was hand-picked based on their interest in carrying Middle Eastern designers. Also supporting d3’s objective of nurturing talent through education and knowledge sharing, Fashion Talks took on a ‘back to basics’ theme aimed at giving designers access to invaluable advice from international and regional industry professionals. Taking into consideration the current challenging retail climate, each talk presented essential elements that emerging design entrepreneurs require to empower and grow their businesses— from sourcing to funding and trend forecasting. Thinking, Fast and Slow Daniel Kahneman This book looks at the way our minds work, and how we make decisions. Why is there a bigger chance we'll believe something if it's in a bold type face? Why are judges more likely to deny parole before lunch? Why do we assume a good-looking person will be more competent? This book enables you to make better decisions at work, at home, and in everything you do. Scan to get it

Dogs Dream About How Much They Love Their Humans, Says Harvard Psychologist Dog owners everywhere are rejoicing over new speculation from a Harvard psychologist saying that dogs dream about their owners when they sleep. Canines and other mammals have been shown to have similar sleep cycles to humans—a phase of deep slumber followed by REM sleep. During this time, humans typically dream about whatever it is they were focused on during the day. However, Dr Deirdre Barrett, a teacher and clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, believes that pooches in particular dream about their human companions.

CANCER
This will be quite a positive time for you, despite the abundance of problems and issues that you will face. In the sphere of business and finances, you will be faced with fewer opportunities than you hoped for. There will not be a total disappointment or a truly unsolvable problem that will influence your further career. Most likely these issues will be of technical in nature, so remember to stay calm and concentrate on the current task.
You will be one of the luckiest signs of the celestial group. You do not have to be afraid of a possibly life-defining choice suddenly arising before you. It may define your life, in part, but the thing is that not a single option will be fully negative. You will just have to choose what feels more right to your heart, a choice that will reflect your nature the most. Do not be afraid to change anything.
For you this month will give birth to two differing paths—one quite positive, and another one with some problems. Be careful to avoid starting a chain of events that may bring a negative outcome. You should be patient and do not try to resolve problems in arguments. Use your charisma and diplomatic abilities, try to be as attentive as possible.
You will have complicated relationships with people around you. In terms of personal relationships, practically all your wishes will come true in the shortest of terms, unless they fall against the wishes of others. Pay special attention to those around you, to your close friends. It is likely that this month all of you will have to overcome some small challenge, the results of which will define your future together.

Take a risk if the right opportunity arises. Look at the situation, weigh the pros and cons. Think about this, then make the final decisions after. In your relationships with friends, some tension may occur right now. Remember that everything is indeed in your hands.
The month will be filled with positivity. You will receive the most opportunities right now, while the barriers are reduced to a minimum. You will feel a fantastic inflow of life strength, while your work capability will multiply. The main thing is to believe in yourself and don't give up, no matter what. It is likely that you have lost a real opportunity more than once in the past, most likely due to your indecisiveness. Do not turn away in the face of doubts.
This month you will face a number of situations all at once that may radically change your life. Hence do not give up on your goals, despite any barriers. Make sure the results of your work shine through. The main thing is to be careful with your health, do not let stress overpower you. Work as much as you can, but do not step over the line after which you come home and fall on the bed as a lifeless corpse. Make sure that your health is a top priority for you.
This will be a stable time, even though it will not be without its peculiarities. Be sure to focus on your main goal and then solve all your problems in a consecutive manner, the way they are prioritised relative to your goal. Listen to people’s advice right now as they may have something useful for you. Be especially careful with what you say and to whom as you may offend an important person in your life. Be sure to listen to your heart since emotions are usually sincere.

You will have an exceptionally strong relationship with your loved ones. In terms of work, focus on getting the job done and you will find some new opportunities that were previously hidden. Now is the time to change everything and start realising your plans. In your personal life, the problem that has been worrying you for a long time will find now find its own resolution. This will teach you to look at the world through a much wider lens.
The month will not be the most outstanding month for you, so be sure to take necessary precautions. However, the best option is for you to swim with the tide, without paying attention to the passing obstacles. Make several backup plans, and use diplomacy to solve your problems. Your biggest task right now is to maintain what you already have, and not to multiply it. Be attentive, keep cool, and you will find your way back once things settle down.
This month will be a relatively positive life period that may manifest itself in a whole sea of important and large-scale outcomes. Due to which you will need to seriously reevaluate and optimise all your resources. The main point is not to doubt yourself and your efforts, especially now, when the stars are fully on your side. Do not take sides when dealing with relatives and friends. Try to focus and enter the conversation at the right time so as not to sound biased.
This is a time for harmony, positivity and rediscovery both in your career and personal relationships. Be sure to work hard, get more organised, and increase your area of expertise. This is a great time to test yourself and also prove to others what you are worth. Do not worry if something goes astray due to some external influences. Everything will happen the way it should and in the end you will certainly reach your goals.
