Message from the Langley offers many things to do, places to go, people to meet. The Times' annual Discover Langley Guide gives residents and visitors a wide variety of choices in these areas. Langley has many attractions, but they are not often formally known as such. There are special places like Williams Park, trails like the Fortto-Fort Trail and many chances at agri-tourism, from Thunderbird Equestrian Centre to the many wineries in the community. There are special events — such as Canada Day celebrations and, this year, the 2010 B.C. Summer Games in July. Langley is a beautiful area. From the green fields of the many area farms to the hustle and bustle of downtown Langley City and Willowbrook shopping areas, it offers many great contrasts. Outdoor activities are very popular in Langley, in all seasons. There is canoeing and boating in the Fraser River, hiking and bik-
ing, swimming at many fine local pools, and even a sandy beach at Aldergrove Lake Regional Park. Equestrian activities are a big part of the local scene, and the many horse facilities demonstrate why Langley is known as the Horse Capital of B.C. History is very important and visible in Langley. B.C. became a British colony at Fort Langley on Nov. 19, 1858, and the location of this important declaration is now a national historic site. The fort offers many special activities year-round. Fort Langley is also home to Langley Centennial Museum and the B.C. Farm Machinery Museum. In Aldergrove, a former telephone office has been turned into an attractive museum. Historic buildings abound all over Langley, particularly Fort Langley and Murrayville. Langley Heritage Society has worked hard to preserve many early-day build-

Wildlife abounds here, in places like Campbell Valley Regional Park, and along the Fraser River. Sports and recreation are very important in Langley. A hub for this activity is the new Langley Events Centre, located at 80 Avenue and 200 Street. In addition to a 4,500-seat hockey rink, it has top-quality volleyball and basketball courts, and an excellent gymnastics training and competition area. It also serves as a recreation centre for the fast-growing Willoughby community. Other important sports facilities include McLeod Athletic Park, City Park, Aldergrove sports fields and several specialized facilities. There are also hockey

Tuition-Free Program® rinks in Walnut Grove, Aldergrove City and Brookswood. Langley has become a very important shopping destination in the past 25 years. There is more commercial square footage in the Willowbrook and Langley City areas than in any other part of the Greater Vancouver region, outside of downtown Vancouver. Stores offer a wide selection of just about everything here, and shopping is not restricted to that portion of Langley. Fort Langley, Brookswood, Murrayville, Walnut Grove and Aldergrove also offer many fine and unique shopping destinations. Langley is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. Most people who move here don't want to leave. This informative guide will show you why. Frank Bucholtz, editor, Langley Times

Langley’s Airport Langley Airport is a strategically located field virtually in the middle of significant residential areas of both Langley Township and Langley City. With a colourful past as an emergency field for the Trans Canada Airway, it has a promising future, envisioned by airport manager George Miller as a centre of excellence for avionics, aerospace and rotary-wing skills training. Robin Currington, of the Canadian Museum of Flight, located at Hangar 3, 5333 216 St. at the airport, says the field was built by hand, by men in the Unemployment Relief Program, between 1933 and 1935. According to author Chris Weicht (Trans Canada Airway: An Aviation History) the field was built as an intermediate field or emergency landing strip, for Trans Canada Airway’s Vancouver to Lethbridge route. The field was completed and began service in 1938. When the Second World War began, the Royal Canadian Air Force established an elementary flight training school at Boundary Bay, and Langley
became a relief field, for pilots to perform “circuits and bumps” or touch downs and take offs, out of Boundary Bay. After the war, Art Seller’s Skyways Air Services kept the field going through services which included crop spraying, forest fire fighting, and pilot training. Seller used the de Havilland DH82 C Tiger Moth for his crop spraying, and later, war surplus Grumman Avengers to begin his fire fighting service, later bought out by Conair, now Abbotsford based. The Flight Museum, open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., has 24 historic aircraft, including a Grumman, and a Handley Page Hampden, which served as a trainer during the Second World War, out of Sidney, on Vancouver Island. It crashed off the coast with no loss of life in 1942, and was raised in 1987. For information on the museum’s many displays and programs, see: www.canadianflight.org. After the war, the Township of Langley leased the airport from the federal government. Seller’s flying school developed many connections that have remained, with recreational and commercial flyers, to this day.

Langley’s Airport In 1967, the Township purchased the airport, from the federal government, for $26,700, on the condition that if it ceased operation as an airport, the land would revert back to the Crown. Since 1991 Miller has been the driving force behind the airport, and has encouraged the establishment or relocation of numerous aviationrelated businesses here. Today, the airport has more than 40 businesses, including the largest concentration of rotary wing firms in Canada, and many other hangars leased to recreational flyers. The 260 high-tech jobs at the airport are expected to increase to more than 400, when new north side development, in the 21300-block of 56 Avenue, currently underway, is completed. Among the new facilities is a 14,000-square-foot hangar owned and constructed by M.C. Welding. This will serve as the permanent terminal for Harbour Air, which began regular Langley/Victoria passenger service in November 2006. Spruce Aircraft Parts, one of North America’s largest wholesale aircraft parts
firms, will also locate in M.C. Welding’s new facility. Magellan Aerospace Corporation, has also relocated here from Abbotsford, completing their new facility in early May. Magellan is one of Canada’s largest aerospace firms. On the north side, a 48,000-square-foot building, is now complete, and a 90,000-square-foot building with eight strata units all slated for lease to aviation firms is under construction. Miller expects when this north side development is completed, the current $69 million annual economic impact of the airport will increase to an estimated $111 million. Miller has a long-range vision of an affiliation with a major post-secondary institution, like B.C.I.T., Kwantlen Polytechnic or Fraser Valley universities, to provide home-grown technicians for the avionics and aerospace firms at the airport.

C-LOVERS: THE ONLY PLACE TO GO FOR FISH & CHIPS C-Lovers Fish & Chips offers its customers great food and great service at a great value. It’s a simple strategy! Offer great food, friendly service, a family atmosphere and affordable prices and your business will be a success. That’s the formula that made C-Lovers B.C.’s favourite choice for fish and chips. C-Lovers has a growing reputation for offering some of the best seafood in the province. “Everything is made from scratch,” said Brad MacLeod, co-owner of the Langley restaurant. While C-Lovers is coming up on their 25th anniversary in B.C., C-Lovers Langley is coming up on their 14th anniversary in 2010. “We were regulars at the original C-Lovers in Coquitlam. It didn’t take long before we realized that we had to get one of these for ourself,” laughed MacLeod. Soon after, they opened their own franchise in Langley. “We started out as a 59 seat restaurant in 1996 and after expansion in 2003 we are now licensed for over 200 seats and are now Canada’s largest fish & chips restaurant.” said Rick Schindelka, co-owner. C-Lovers has quickly become famous for its great fish and
chips. The “All You Can Eat” fish and chips deal remains the most popular item on the menu. The meal includes fish & chips and a bottomless pop. “We were the first to offer all you can eat and it’s available on our menu Sunday thru Thursday for lunch and dinner, and Saturday for lunch until4 p.m.”, At C-Lovers “quality is the key and the goal of everything we do.” MacLeod said with a smile, and, “we make everything from scratch whether it’s our mushy peas, our fresh coleslaw, our c-food chowder (it’s not Manhattan and it’s not New England its c-food chowder an old Cockney family recipe.) It’s all made on premises daily. We also cut all of our own fish and chips whether it’s Alaskan halibut, local
cod or locally grown Kennebec potatoes (about 100,000 lbs. of fish and about 185,000 lbs. of hand chipped potatoes a year).” C-lovers prides itself on using only locally grown and purchased products to ensure freshness and great taste. Halibut dinners, cod, haddock, prawns…C-Lovers has something to please any seafood fan and if your not they have the best chicken strips ever. C-Lovers also offers people the opportunity to enjoy their meal in a fun casual atmosphere. “There is a great family atmosphere, you can bring your kids and the grandparents to C-Lovers,” explained Schindelka. “Word-of-mouth is our best form of advertising. People are always telling us that friends recommend our restaurant.”

Frail Memorials: the Cemeteries of Langley It’s the last place you’d expect to find a cemetery, even a tiny one where the remains of only two people are buried. The traffic swishes by — no, perhaps rumbles would be more appropriate, as this is 216 Street in Milner, one of the busiest roads in Langley, where only seconds tick by before the next vehicle speeds to its destination. “When you stand here, you realize just how much Langley has changed . . .” the words of Warren Sommer, arguably the premier expert on Langley’s history, are lost to traffic noise. “Let’s go into the churchyard. It might be slightly quieter.” “A century ago,” Sommer continues, “this part of Langley was a quiet, agricultural area. Although much of the community’s heritage is being saved, its character is being compromised by development.” It is quieter here for Ellen Culbert whose grave is marked by a marble tablet, at the top of which are engraved clasped hands. A poignant inscription beneath her name reads: We shall meet again sweet mother In a brighter clime than this Where the anguish of this world of ours Is lost in endless bliss. The marble marker tells us that Ellen Culbert was the wife of Thomas Culbert. She lived from June 16, 1844 to Jan. 22, 1894. A few feet from the gravestone is a simple, unadorned cross that marks the final resting place of one of Ellen and Thomas Culbert’s daughters. She died young, her name and age both unknown: the small, white cross bears no inscription. These two graves are all that remain in St. Alban’s Anglican churchyard. The markers face west which, as Sommer records in Frail Memorials: the Cemeteries of Langley, was contrary to usual Anglican practice.
“The church may have felt it more important to acknowledge the presence of the road than the niceties of past practice,” Sommer wrote. In the 1890s it was unclear where the centre of Langley was — Fort Langley was by then a hamlet with a school, a church, a blacksmith and general store. Similarly, Innes Corners and Murrays’ Corners were also small. The house to the immediate north of the cemetery stands on the site of St. Alban the Martyr, and across the street is the original vicarage. In the 1920s, St. Alban’s was dismantled and moved to the southeast corner of Fraser Highway and 248 Street where it now serves as a meeting hall. Ellen’s final resting place means that she is not far from the Blair Farm further south on 216 Street. She and Thomas had a daughter, Eliza, who married George Blair, the father of Bill Blair who became mayor of the Township of Langley. George took over the farm when the Culberts moved to New Zealand in the late 1890s. Another church with an interesting church yard is St. George’s Anglican in Fort Langley. Beneath the lawn rest the remains of about 40 people whose graves were discovered by an archeological team from Simon Fraser University. Several years ago, the church needed to expand its space for worship and build a new hall, but the location of the remains influenced the dimensions of the latter. Ultimately, the church was lifted, and an addition built on the original footprint, avoiding encroachment into the burial ground. The SFU team used ground penetrating radar which found evidence of the remains of the 40, the majority of whom were transplants from Great Britain, as well as French Canadians, Kanakas, and aboriginal people who included Metis, Iroquois
and Sto:lo. Only four markers remain; the others have decayed, the casualties of time and the elements. One belongs to the three-week-old son of Henry and Eliza Peers. The infant died in 1850. The Fort Langley church yard holds mysteries, not least of which is that surrounding Sarah Brousseau (1841-1889). A weathered marble cross gives her name as “Brewseau” but intriguingly, she may not be buried there at all. It is surprising that she would be buried in the cemetery, given that seven years earlier the municipal burial ground opened in Fort Langley. But, as Sommer pointed out, it may be that she wanted to rest with her family members. Sommer said that “a rival suggestion” suggests that she may in fact have been buried at Derby and that the stone was brought to Fort Langley to save it from falling into the river. Sommer writes in his book that several monuments may have been disturbed when the church was built. As with St. Alban’s and its westfacing headstones, St. George’s has its oddities, one of which links it to the Roman Catholic faith. The cast iron cross on the gable is not unlike hundreds in the Fraser Valley and once marked the grave of Katrina, the Kwantlen wife of Hudson’s Bay Company employee Peoh Peoh. Representing the resurrection and the rising sun, the cross is a reminder of how the Roman Catholic Church “converted” the Native population of the Fraser Valley. Katrina, Peoh Peoh, Sarah Brousseau and countless others carved out much of the Langley we know today. Not all their secrets and triumphs lie with them. ~ Natasha Jones

member of the Hudsons Bay Fort that north west Langley road along the Fraser was known as “Muenchs Road”. Edward Muench was one of the first farmers and fishermen to settle in the area. He was a founding father of the Municipality and signed the petition for incorporation in 1872. There have been members of the Muench family in West Langley to this day.
• That James Douglas, our esteemed first Governor was born in Guyana, had a Creole mother, a Scottish father and later married Amelia whose mother was a Cree First Nations woman. How appropriate for B.C. to have had such a multi-cultural forefather. • That in 1924 the Fort Langley Women’s Institute President formed the Society that built the Fort Langley Community Hall. The Hall was built and remains run and maintained by the same volunteer Society. The Garden is the site of the Township “Spirit Square”. • That the old velocipede which sits on the tracks outside the Langley Heritage Society CN Station was built in England in 1885, was used on B.C. railroads until it was replaced by more modern machines. It was donated to the Agricultural Museum in Fort Langley who restored it. It is lent to the CN Station site every summer where it is of great interest to the visitors. • That the garden at the CN Station site is called Mrs.Simpson’s garden to commemorate the original Station garden that the Station mistress entered into the RR gardens contest in 1918. The railroad authorities sponsored the contest to give the station masters wives a project to occupy them while their husbands were looking after the RR business. • That Glover Road was named after a Fort Langley soldier who was killed in the First World War. Before that the street was “smugglers road” as it was a route used to move illegal goods past the Fort to the U.S. • That the Church of the Holy Redeemer on McMillan Island was the second church on that site. The Kwantlen Band built the first Church, St Martins in the 1860’s . The altar and seats were carved by August Seleepin. In 1902 the Oblate fathers from Mission supervised the rebuilding of the Church and renamed it The Church of the Holy Redeemer. Today it is a wonderful setting for weddings and celebrations. • That June 3rd, 1957 was the first official sailing of the Albion Ferry. The final sailing was on July 31st, 2009 after the opening of the Golden Ears Bridge.

Tourism Langley Tourism continues to be one of the largest resource industries in our province, and is now considered to be the fastest growing industry in B.C. Tourism generates approximately $14 billion to the overall economy, supporting over 130,000 jobs. There are over 18,000 tourismrelated businesses in B.C., and between 300 to 500 new tourism businesses are started each year. This supports approximately one in every 10 jobs in our province. Tourism is in fact, an export product because visitor’s travel to B.C. and purchase our product – the “B.C. Experience. Currently, after forestry, it is the second-largest earner of income for the province. When you review these statistics, it is no wonder that communities are trying to position themselves to capitalize on the opportunities. Officially launched in January, 2008, Tourism Langley is one of over 50 recognized DMO’s. A not-for-profit society, Tourism Langley is governed by an independent Board of Directors, led this year by Chair, John Aldag, Fort Langley National Historic Site, Vice-Chair, Stan Duckworth, Fort Langley, Secretary-Treasurer, Dave Struthers, Sandman Hotels & Inns, Laurie Braaten, Coast Cas-
cades Hotel & Casino, Ted Bowman, Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, Jody Henderson, Greater Vancouver Zoo, Susan Magnusson School of Music, Carla Robin, Sport Langley, Alnoor Tejpar, Best Western Hotels, and ex-officio’s Councillor Bev Dornan, Township of Langley and Mayor Peter Fassbender, City of Langley. The organization is charged with a mandate to deliver effective marketing strategies that will generate increased visitation to Langley, encourage extended stays, and produce more revenues for businesses in Langley. Speared by Premier Gordon Campbell’s challenge to double tourism revenues by 2015, Tourism Langley has committed to tourism growth and their efforts will be targeted at generating demand for the high quality and endless choices of experiences one can expect here. Capitalizing on post-Olympic opportunities and given the diverse blend of product and services and ideal geographical location is well positioned to see continued results of their investment in tourism. Recognizing this is a multi-dimensional and highly competitive industry, Tourism Langley strives to deliver programs that heighten awareness to our own residents

while capturing the imaginations of our day-trippers, regional and international travelers. A fresh approach to customer-focused and results-oriented strategies include working with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts on various development programs such as internationally recognized WorldHost, and enhancement to services at the new Langley Visitor Centre located at the Langley Events Centre, where their experienced Counsellors and Volunteers have a direct impact on the visitor experience and lasting impression of the community. In summary, tourism fosters community spirit and improves the image of a city. In return, we create more ambassadors for our city and our enhanced image will enable Langley to attract new businesses, workers and residents. Through effective programs, tourism will also increase a visitor’s satisfaction, resulting in new and return visits to our community. 2010 BC Summer Games July 22-25 Langley Township is in the midst of preparations to host the 2010 BC Summer Games this July. Exactly 100 days after the Games Torch is lit out front of the new Summer Games offices at Langley Events Centre on April 21, the Games themselves will present 35 events involving 23 sports. The Games will be hosted primarily at venues spread throughout Langley Township, including Aldergrove Athletic Park Events Centre in Willoughby, Walnut Grove Community Centre Rowing and Paddling Centre in Fort Langley, and George Preston Recreation Centre in Brookswood. Some events will also be held in Langley City, Abbotsford, Fleetwood, and Crescent Beach. Organizers are expecting as many as 10,000 athletes and supporters to pack the 7 p.m. opening ceremonies at McLeod Athletic Park on Thursday, July 22. The closing ceremonies will take place at 2 p.m. on July 25 at another of the well-used Games venues, the Langley Events Centre. Organizers are planning for another 5,000 spectators to congratulate and bid adieu to B.C.’s top amateur athletes. To put on the massive show involving about 3,000 athletes
and another 1,000 coaches and officials, organizers are busily recruiting between 3,000 and 4,000 volunteers for a variety of tasks that will have to be handled during and leading up to the Games. Those wishing to volunteer can do so online at www.bcgames.net. Friends of the Games will have to raise several hundred thousand dollars in the coming months. “We are looking for 100 businesses in Langley to contribute $2,000 and another 20 to contribute $5,000 in order to fund some of the most necessary supplies needed to host these athletes and their families,” Jamey Paterson, vice-president, BC Summer Games, said in a letter to potential supporters. Anyone interested in making a financial contribution can contact Paterson at jameypaterson@ shaw.ca or 604-290-4447. “I believe that, if we all rally together and contribute to these games, we will showcase all that Langley has to offer and make this a memorable experience for each athlete and visitor to our community,” said Games president Michael Jackstien. “Our goal is to put on the best Games and leave a legacy to be proud of.”

BBQ on the Bypass
The 5th Annual BBQ on the Bypass is being hosted and organized by the staff at Well Seasoned gourmet food store and cooking school in Langley. Owner, Angie Quaale, was introduced to competitive barbequing in 2004 when she met BBQ evangelist and Canadian BBQ Champion Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuk. Angie figured the best way to join the quest for the ultimate BBQ was to host a competition. In 2005 she invited teams to Langley, from all over the Pacific Northwest and, as a result, the BBQ on the Bypass was born. Explore the great outdoors with man’s best friend When the sun is shining people just want to jump outside and enjoy it. Man’s best friend is no different. But where can you take your fourlegged friend and let him run freely without getting in trouble? Well, the answer is easy in Langley. There is a great selection of dog parks in all areas of Langley. Aldergrove Lake Park Lefeuvre Road, and Eight Avenue) is a lovely place with a large fenced in area that your pup is sure to enjoy for a long time. The operating hours are from 8 a.m. to dusk and just in case you forgot, they have doggie bags on site. After some free-running try strapping on the leash and talking a leisurely walk through the groomed trails. Derby Reach Park (North Langley and the Fraser River at 208 Street) is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon with the entire family. The large fenced in area allows your dog to run and have fun, he’ll even take a chance to splash around the beach. On site there are doggie bags, restrooms, benches and tables, and trash cans. Also there is an abundance of parking and is handicap accessible. This park is accessible from dawn until dusk. In Brookswood, residents and visitors can visit the Brookswood Dog Park (204 Street near 44 Avenue) between dawn and dusk. This fenced in park has a doggie bag dispenser and some wheelchair access. A new parking lot was recently put in, making it easier to drive your furry friend home. But be sure to bring a towel or rag, if you get caught in the rain, things can get messy. Langley Passive Park (36 Avenue at 208 Street) is a great place to go when both you and your four-legged companion need to cool off. With a huge lake surrounded by trails and fields, everyone is sure to enjoy themselves. Tables, benches and doggie bags are all available to use at this partially fenced in park. HALF & 5 KM JULY 18
We have designed this race course to be the most scenic half marathon in the country!
The community offers a multitude of wonderful areas in which to walk, skate, hike, bike, horseback, or even set up a picnic. Aldergrove Lake Regional Park Features: 9.5 km Hiking/Walking Trails, 7km of Horseback Trails and 7.5km of Cycling Trails. Swimming at Aldergrove Lake is open from the beginning of the Victoria Day weekend in May to the end of the Labour Day weekend in September. Dogs must be under control at all times. There are on-leash and leashoptional areas in the park. The dog off-leash area is in the northeast corner of the park at the corner of Lefeuvre Road and Huntingdon Road. Some facilities at the lake area are wheelchair accessible. Trails are subject to use and weathering which may degrade them to the point where their original accessible design has been compromised. It is advisable to take an able-bodied person with you. Derby Reach Regional Park has over 15 kilometres of trails through fields that were once farmed by pioneers. Walkers, runners and mountain bikers can be found along the Fort to Fort trail, which links Derby Reach, the original site of the Hudson Bay Fort with the original Fort Langley National Historic Site. First time visitors to this park are advised to travel north on 208th Street (if coming from Highway 1). Take the 200th Street exit and cross over to 208th on 88th Avenue and watch for the green and yellow park entrance signs.

Lots to offer to the Young at Heart, Centrally located in the lush Fraser Valley is a unique blend of urban and country lifestyle. Its residents enjoy many of the big city amenities one could possibly wish for in an urban community and yet be within a 45-minute drive to Vancouver. There are four border crossings nearby for those who have get-away places in the United States. So, it should come as no surprise why so many retirees choose to live in Langley with its friendly community spirit and an abundance of suitable housing, shopping, entertainment, and recreational facilities. The combined population of the City and Township of Langley is approximately 125,000 and of this total, over 13,000 are 65 years of age or older. Langley is very proud of its heritage, being the “Birthplace of British Columbia dating back to the mid1800s. The Fort Langley Historic Site
is a reconstruction of the Hudson Bay Fort built in 1827 and it is one of the many historic place visited by residents, their families and tourists alike. One of the most affordable areas in the Greater Vancouver region has a wide range of housing choices from small farms and country estates to garden apartments and condominiums and it is progressively expanding in this area. For seniors, there is a variety of housing options from nonprofit societies or housing co-ops to any short and long-term care facilities providing residents with personal and medical care, meals, and other assistance that may be necessary. But now, let’s look at some of the many recreational facilities and interesting things to do for our elder population. You will find a more detailed description elsewhere in this Infoguide. Seniors, and Boomers Langley area including the George Preston Recreation Centre, which is home to the Langley Curling Club. The facility offers ice-skating and hockey games. The Langley Lawn Bowling Club is another popular venue for Seniors. Langley has two indoor pools and recreation centres; the WC Blair Recreation Centre and the Walnut Grove Community Centre. Both centres offer fitness programs for Seniors. There are many local parks and two of the more popular walking trails are the Fort-to-Fort trail in Fort Langley that takes you on a short history along by the Fraser River. The other is The Nicomekl Flood Plain Park along the river band and connecting to a nature trail leading to the Sendall Gardens. The sign on the door may say Seniors’ Centre, but inside, age is merely a state of mind. The Langley Seniors Recreation and Resource Centre is a place where those who are 50 years and greater can find friendship, keep active, and continue to enjoy the finer things in life. It is a place where mature adults of all abilities and interests can pursue their favourite pastimes and keep motivated in body, mind, and spirit. People are often surprised when they walk through the doors and into the bright, bustling Centre. A far cry from the stereotypical “old folks” facility, the Langley Seniors
Centre hums with activity, as members and visitors play games, dance, enjoy fitness classes, create crafts, or simply socialize. Throughout the year, regular activities, bus trips, and special events are offered by the centre for those to indulge their passions, learn new skills, and share experiences with friends and new acquaintances. A number of programs are also offered for those who are more isolated and are in need of some support or assistance. Services include Outreach Workers who will meet with seniors in their own homes or at the Seniors Centre and provide information and referral to government and community services. Outreach Workers will also let seniors know about the many programs and services at the Centre that will help keep a senior connected and independent. These programs include Seniors Transportation Assistance, a weekly Social and a Telephone Reassurance Line. Sometimes a reassuring voice on the telephone or a warm welcome at the Centre is just what an elderly citizen needs to feel connected to the community. For further information about the Langley Seniors Centre you can call 604-530-3020. Open Monday to Saturday for nutritious and affordable meals, recreation programs, crafts, singing and so much more -- the place is always buzzing with activity.

Langley Events Centre Almost a year into its official existence, the Langley Events Centre is already leaving an indelible mark in the history and the lifestyle of Langley residents. The Centre’s creation, construction and operation are being viewed as a classic – and rare – example of shared vision, cooperation and efficiency. From an original intention to build a modest community centre in the burgeoning Langley area of Willoughby, the Township Council opened the door to a much expanded vision that could be shared by a multiplicity of partners. Key to the successful implementation of a significantly increased scope for the Centre was the creation of a working partnership that attracted the involvement of the Provincial Government as well as private investment while not significantly increasing the capital contribution of the Township and taxpayers. Enter the Langley Development Group, headed by Moray Keith and Jim
Bond, owners of the Langley Chief’s hockey club, and Rich Coleman, MLA for Langley and then Minister of Forests. In the end, the partnership brought together not only TOL, LDG and the provincial government, but also Trinity Western University, School District 35 and Langley Gymnastics Foundation. The partnership pursued two major objectives: • Shared contribution of capital costs. • Expanded capacity to host sports and events Critical to the success of the Partnership was the containment of costs. The Centre as you see it today consists of an arena, a triple gymnasium, a gymnastics centre, a banquet and exhibition hall, a full commercial kitchen, a TOL fitness centre, meeting rooms, commercial and office space and provision for services such as a sports medicine clinic and even the potential for a community police station.
A modest increase in the original scope provided for complementary amenities such as the high performance video screens in the arena, the gyms and the roadside pylon sign. Today the Centre is home to university, high school and community sports programs as well as professional basketball and Jr. and professional lacrosse and the BCHL Langley Chiefs. The gyms, which seat 2,000, and the arena which seats over 5,000, are attracting regional, provincial and even national tournament attention while they and the banquet hall are hosting conferences, consumer shows and even weddings and high school graduations. The Centre will be home base for the 2010 BC Summer Games and the venue for basketball and lacrosse events at the Games. For upcoming event information see www.langleyeventscentre.com

Historic Telegraph Trail Telegraph Trail, which exists today in at least four different Langley locations, is the second-oldest road in Langley. It is predated only by Smugglers Trail, originally a First Nations route that is now occupied by part of present-day Glover Road. As the name implies, Telegraph Trail was originally not a road. It was a trail alongside the telegraph poles installed by the Collins Overland Telegraph Company in 1865. This telegraph company's ambitious goal was to link North America with Europe and Asia via telegraph, using an overland route that would go through British Columbia to Alaska (which was then Russian territory) and across the Bering Sea to Siberia. The telegraph project never achieved its goals. While a good portion of the North American line was built, a transAtlantic cable was successfully laid between Newfoundland and Ireland in 1866, negating the need for the expensive line through thousands of miles of wilderness. An original line under the ocean had been laid in 1858, but it only worked for a short time. Several other attempts to lay a trans-Atlantic cable were unsuccessful. As part of the Collins project, a line was built to New Westminster from the United States by Western Union. It went into service on March 21, 1865. One of the first important items of news transmitted over the wire was the story of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on

April 14, 1865. It was extended into the interior of B.C. (giving rise to such places as Telegraph Creek on the Stikine River, which got its name from the project) and Alaska before all work ceased in 1867. The telegraph line remained in service in B.C. for quite some time, as it allowed Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island cities to stay in communication with the Cariboo, where the Barkerville gold rush was well underway. In one form or another, parts of the line remained in service until 1936. Here in Langley, the trail became a full-fledged road in two key locations. The longest stretch was from the Surrey boundary, right near the Fraser River, as far east as Glover Road. It bisected much of what was known as West Langley (and is now called Walnut Grove) and then ran along the ridge above the Fort Langley flood plain. Today's Telegraph Trail exists in four separate sections. The first runs from just north of the CN tracks in Surrey (just west of the Langley boundary) to 96 Avenue. The road used to run south of 96 Avenue, but that area has become industrial property. Other portions of the former road between 96 Avenue and 204 Street have also been developed. A short portion still exists as a road, east of 204 Street and north of 88 Avenue. The third section can be found south of 88 Avenue, off 212 Street. From there it runs east all the way to Glover Road, passing through an area of farms and rural properties. This is probably the best-known portion of Telegraph Trail in modern-day Langley. The fourth section is perhaps the most picturesque. From 80 Avenue east of 240 Street, this portion of Telegraph Trail runs almost due south to 72 Avenue at 248 Street. It twists and turns as it goes down a hill and is today a pristine rural street that is popular with equestrians and cyclists. Maps in Roads and Other Place Names in Langley, a book by Maureen Pepin, indicate that Telegraph Trail ran from the Surrey border just north of 96 Avenue in a southeasterly direction to Glover Road. As noted, this trail later became a road and much if it remains in use. From there, it dipped across the Salmon River to remain above the flood plain close to where today's Rawlison Crescent runs. It then headed almost straight south, meeting 72 Avenue at 248 Street. From there, it headed east on the edge on the high ground and continued to what is now the Abbotsford border near what would be 68 Avenue and 276 Street today. More information about the fascinating story of the Collins Overland Telegraph Company is available on the Internet through a Simon Fraser University master's thesis prepared by Stewart Andrew Robb in 1968. It can be accessed at http://ir.lib.sfu.ca/retrieve/1853/b15591827.pdf. ~ Frank Bucholtz

Kids and the Great Outdoors Water parks, playgrounds and outdoor pools are rites of passage for children of all ages and Langley has an abundance of locations for the young and young at heart to get their fill. Ranging from the elaborate set-ups complete with spray guns, spinners and showers to the simple, yet traditional plume of water shooting from the ground, there is a park somewhere in Langley for everyone. Starting in the Township, Brookswood Park (200 Street and 40 Avenue) not only has a water park but a playground, drinking water and restrooms. In addition, this park is located close to Brookswood strip mall which has a couple of choices to grab a bite to eat. While in Murrayville young and old play side by side at the Murrayville Outdoor Activity Park (221 Street and 48A Avenue), a water park, skateboard park, playground, basketball court and ball hockey box. Just up the road in Aldergrove, Philip Jackman Park (271 Street and 32 Avenue) is a mecca for outdoorsummer fun. With water park and an outdoor pool there is plenty of room to cool off. In addition, there is a baseball diamond, changing room, concession stand, drinking water, picnic facilities, playground, restrooms, playing fields and tennis courts. Families can easily make a day trip to this wonderful community park. Across the freeway in Walnut Grove is another large
outdoor park full of fun family entertainment. Walnut Grove Park (8397 Walnut Grove Dr.) has everything Philip Jackman Park has and more, including a jogging track, lighted fields, a skateboard park and treed nature walk. Finally Willoughby Community Park (202A Street and 78 Avenue) is a quaint community gathering place consists of a playground, lighted fields and of course, a water park. Not to be outdone, the City of Langley also has its share of water-filled-fun. In the heart of the city at Douglas Park (Douglas Crescent and 206 Street) children and their parents can enjoy the water park in addition to an adventure playground, sports box, two tennis courts and bowling green. Be sure to get there early, this is one of the busiest parks in Langley, especially when they sun is shining! While Langley City Park (207 Street and 48 Avenue) is home to Al Anderson Memorial Pool (an outdoor pool) and water park. But while you’re there, why not have a bite to eat at one of the 32 picnic tables (20 of which are sheltered) and two BBQ grills? Or take a look in the Langley Arts Centre? Then, make a date to use one of the four baseball diamonds, two adult sized soccer fields (or mini soccer field), football field or outdoor Lacrosse Box.

Langley’s Social History Before there was 7-Elevens and other 24-hour convenience stores in Langley, there were family-run stores like Berry’s General Store on 232 Street and Porter’s in Murrayville. Before there was internet dating and nightclubs like Gabby’s Cabaret’s singles met at the Milner Community Hall for Saturday night dances. When women wanted to spend the day shopping, they wouldn’t hop in the car and drive to Willowbrook Shopping Centre, they would get on the Interurban and spend the day shopping in downtown New Westminster. Before e-mail and cellphones, people got all the information they needed through the local post offices in Aldergrove, Milner and Fort Langley. Before there was Colossus, where kids have their pick of at least seven different movies playing at the same time, there was the one theatre in downtown Langley. Where PriceSmart now stands at 201A Street and Fraser Highway, there once was a roller rink and then the Bow Fiddler nightclub which later burned down. In the 1960s, Fraser Highway from 192 Street east to 207 was where local teens cruised the strip every Friday and Saturday night.
Langley has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, and so has where and how people have fun. A lot of Langley’s best gathering spots and hangouts are now demolished, but the memories still remain. Take a trip down memory lane and find out how Langley youth spent their Saturday nights. As Times columnist and long-time Langley resident Jim McGregor points out about Langley’s social past, “There was lots to do and plenty of time to do it.” Milner Community Hall – What was once the hub of Langley, where families gathered every Saturday night to eat, dance and be social, is now a parking lot beside a busy gas station and convenience store in Milner. The Esso gas pumps, convenience store and MP Mark Warawa’s office are just north of what was the twostorey Milner Community Hall on the southeast corner of 216 Street and Glover Road. In fact, inside the gas station (to the left of the counter) are black and white and colour pictures showing the busy intersection throughout the years. Built in 1912, the Milner Community Hall became the place where families from all around gathered every Saturday night to dance or roller-
skate on what was known as the best hardwood floor in Langley. Langley’s first female City councillor Iris Mooney met her husband there. Moving from the prairies to Langley to become a nurse, she said the dance hall was a great place for newcomers to get to know the community residents. Long-time Milner couple Ellen and Jack Worrell danced there as high school sweethearts. They even laced up their rollerskates along with their parents, and took a few laps around the hall floor. They still have Jack’s mom’s original rollerskates from the 1920s. In fact, rollerskating at the Milner Hall was a favourite pasttime right from the beginning of the hall opening. “It was what you did for entertainment,” said Ellen. It wasn’t just dances and rollerskating, the Agri Fair used to be held there as well as Irish suppers and other events that gathered farmers and Langley Prairie residents together. Every Saturday night, the whole family, kids in tow, would go to the hall, sometimes until midnight for dancing or rollerskating, music playing from a record player. ~ Monique Tamminga ~ Monique Tamminga

Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation – There has never been a better time to invest in the health of this community. While recent headlines paint a true picture of challenging times ahead for healthcare, we also know that with change, comes tremendous opportunity. What is not in doubt is the ability of this community to rise to the challenge and to come together to meet our collective needs. Our supporters continue to amaze us daily. In the last 6 months alone, the Foundation has raised more than $450,000 for much needed equipment at the Langley Memorial Hospital, despite today’s economic challenges. This success is only made possible as a result of the unwavering support and generosity of this exceptional community. The entire Foundation team thanks all of our donors for continuing to inspire us with such a giving spirit. Our community is one of the fast-
est growing communities within the region, and our needs are growing even quicker. The LMH Foundation Board is committed to growing with this community and to providing the absolute best in healthcare today, tomorrow and well into the future. Please join us and help us continue to make a difference! Gifts to the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation make a difference in the lives of patients, everyday. Everyone has a different ability to give, but everyone has a common ability to make a difference. When thinking about lending your support, ask yourself why Langley Memorial Hospital, a community based care facility, is important to you? Through the support of local businesses and individuals the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation has been able to purchase vital equip-
ment to help keep this community hospital to be the best at preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health. People give for many reasons. Some donors wish to thank the Foundation for their efforts or some have been touched by patient stories and feel the need to give back. Donors to LMHF are making a long-term investment to quality medical treatment. Their gifts support the newest medical technology and also medical research to help treatments for the future. Langley Speedway There has been a recent discussion concerning the date the track first opened. While most records list 1965 as the year of official opening, officiated by Noel Booth, a local politician of renown, it is generally agreed that 1963 is the year that racing began on the track. Construction began in 1962. Langley Speedway hosted NASCAR Winston West races in 1971, 1972 and 1978. This makes it one of only three sites in BC that has hosted NASCAR races. The others being Western Speedway in Victoria and Westwood in Coquitlam. They ran Late Models, Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Bombers in the final years, but everything from Super Modified to crash-to-pass and mini-stock cars were run at the track. The track was closed to racing at the end of the 1984 season. There is some disagreement on whether there was a lease for the 1985 season or not. It has been said that there was,
but it was cancelled before the season began. The property is still part of the Campbell Valley Regional Park, owned by Metro Vancouver taxpayers. The park staff removed all the buildings, the hillside seats and any other structures such as the fencing and the starters tower. Vandalism became a problem after the track was closed. As of 2008, the track surface is intact, with some minor damage due to parties with bonfires and a couple of trees that laid roots under the surface. These trees have been removed. The concrete walls are still in place. Some appear to be falling apart, but in fact are showing the damage caused by race cars smashing into them. On Sept. 3rd 2006, The Langley Speedway Historical Society had a clean-up at the track, exposing the walls and clearing the track surface. There will be more work parties of this nature in the future, as Metro Vancou-

ver has accepted the proposal of the Langley Speedway Historical Society. If you are interested in helping preserve the history of this track, contributing articles or photos, or helping in the restoration of the site, please contact the Langley Speedway Historical Society and put yourself on our liSt. Recent measurements of the track surface have proven beneficial in settling a long discussed issue of the track's size. It has been advertised as both a 1/4 mile track and later as a 3/8 mile. The track is exactly 1/4 mile in the racing groove. It was measure both by a vehicle odometer and a measuring wheel. They both agree. On Sept. 25th, 2006, the Township of Langley voted to include the Speedway on its official list of Heritage Resources, effectively declaring it a heritage site. ~ courtesy Langley Speedway Historical Society www.langleyspeedway.ca

Birth of a Province Standing inside the high walls of Fort Langley National Historic Site on a cold and dreary autumn afternoon, the pungent scent of woodsmoke drifting on the wind, it’s easy to imagine the site as it would have appeared to a visitor 150 years ago — perhaps one who has come with a bundle of furs fresh off the trapline, or a string of Fraser River salmon to trade for manufactured goods from Europe. Supporting the fantasy are the comings and goings of re-enactors, dressed in the costumes of early settlers, and members of the Sto:lo First Nation, who pass occasionally, wearing costumes that include traditional woven hats to ward off icy raindrops. The scene is evocative of the rich history shared by voyageurs, Hudson’s Bay Company officials and First Nations people at the birth of a province.
A century and a half ago, the HBC trading post of Fort Langley was the bustling centrepiece of a fledgling community, but its beginnings, 30 years earlier, were as troublesome as the land itself proved for the earliest European arrivals. Built in 1827 at Derby Reach, the site of the first fort was strategically chosen just north of the 49th parallel, in the midst of a large Aboriginal population on the banks of the Fraser River. In this spot, Fort Langley quickly began to prosper as a fur and salmon trading post, serving as a conduit between England and the wilderness far to the north. Twelve years after it was founded, however, the fort, which they soon discovered was subject to flooding, was deemed to be too far from the Hudson Bay Company Farm, a 2,000-acre property
on Langley Prairie. It was moved from the original site to its current location south of McMillan Island in 1839. But disaster struck the following year when a cooking fire inside the blacksmith’s shop got away and destroyed everything that had been built on the new site. After the fire, the fort walls had to quickly be rebuilt to prevent theft, and as a result the third fort constructed was considerably smaller than its predecessor— the north wall sitting where the CN Rail tracks run today, and the south wall about where the main gate into the palisade exists now. “What was here before the fire is unclear,” said Nancy Hildebrand, promotions officer for Fort Langley National Historic Site. But what came after was a matter of priorities, she explained. continued next page

Birth of a Province The smithy would have been one of the first buildings completed, because the HBC needed to produce farm tools, as well as axe heads and other metal items to trade. A storehouse to hold goods from Europe as well as receive furs and salmon, was also quickly rebuilt. In fact, the storehouse, built in the 1840s and still standing inside the palisade, is the only remaining building from the days of the working fort, and “very likely one of the oldest remaining buildings in B.C.” said Hildebrand. Later, as time permitted, the fort’s walls were once again extended to the size it is today — a roughly two-and-a-half-acre enclosure. Over time, buildings were added, including the big house, where the chief clerk (in charge of the farm) and chief trader (in charge of the fort) would have lived in separate quarters. Today, a full-scale replica of the house stands near the south wall of the fort — one of several buildings reconstructed in 1958 as part of B.C.’s centennial celebrations.

The outside of the structure was designed from sketches done by a royal engineer. “The inside is an educated guess,” said Fort Langley heritage interpreter Aman Johal. Immediately inside the front door is a pair of offices — one for the clerk and one for the trader. Stepping through the next doorway a visitor enters the house’s largest room, one that would have been used as a gentlemen’s mess and for business and social gatherings of the day, Johal explained. But this room also holds the greatest historical significance of any on the site, perhaps in the whole province. “This is where we believe B.C. was born as a colony,” said Johal. Around 100 men would have pressed themselves inside the space on Nov. 19, 1858, to witness the signing of the document that created British Columbia. The declaration had been spurred on by the massive influx of 30,000 prospectors, hoping to strike it rich in the Fraser River gold rush. All of it, Johal explained, was a very calculated move on the part
of Governor James Douglas. The fort stockpiled 800 ounces of gold and, earlier that year, sent it to San Francisco to be assayed. Douglas knew word would quickly spread throughout the California city and beyond. “It was a cheap way to advertise,” said Johal. To the north east of the big house stands a replica of HBC employee quarters, one of four that likely existed at the fort’s height in the mid 19th century. At the time, there would have been people living both inside and outside the walls of the fort. The vast majority of the men — of British, French, Hawaiian and Iroquois descent — took local First Nations women as wives, a practice which was strongly encouraged, because it promoted trade. In addition, wives could act as interpreters and help their European husbands survive in an unfamiliar and sometimes hostile land. Only the men under contract with the Hudson’s Bay Company were supported by company with food and lodging; wives and older children had to work to earn their continued next page

Birth of a Province keep, said Johal. Each family did so with varying levels of success. “You could tell who was showing off,” said Johal, strolling through the fort’s replicated married workers’ quarters. The room designed to house, on average, a family of five, boasts the main status symbol of the time — a wood-burning stove. All the buildings inside the fort walls, including the residences, pulled double duty, with storage on the second floor. With very little metal available, they were constructed entirely of wood, using a post-on-sill method, with the beams placed very close together to support the considerable weight of the goods stored above. Stockpiling was a given. With a voyage from England, around the tip of South America, taking six months each way, anything ordered from Europe took a full year to arrive. Inside the fort, the depot housed goods produced or brought in for sale to fort workers and miners — it was essentially the company store. The nearby storehouse, meanwhile, held items for trade and even included the equivalent of today’s drive-through window, where traders could walk or ride up and carry out transactions without stepping foot inside the fort. This was another strategic move by the HBC, Johal explained, because many of the local First Nations people would have been put off by the enclosure. “The Natives would have felt hostility because of the walls,” he said. For six decades, furs and fish brought to the fort were shipped to Europe via Cape Horn, produce was traded to the Russians in Alaska in return for access to fur trapping lines, and local cranberries found their way to California. All the while, Hudson’s Bay Com-
pany forts throughout the region worked in co-operation with one another. Fort Esquimalt on Vancouver Island, where such “exotic” vegetables as carrots and onions were grown, Fort Nisqually, at Tacoma, Wash., where wool was the main product of a 273,000-acre farm at the base of the Olympic Peninsula, and Fort Vancouver in southern Washington State, all traded with Fort Langley, and its produce and dairy farm, until the fort closed in 1886 and the land was purchased at auction and occupied by the Mavis family. During the early 1920s, the government purchased the storehouse and an acre of land around it, reopening it as a museum of world artifacts — many of the items on display were the treasures of British colonialism. “They charged a nickel and whited out the windows so no one could peek in,” said Johal. Prior to B.C.’s centennial celebrations in 1958, work began in earnest to rebuild the fort as a national historic site. Several buildings were constructed that year, and more have since been added, as recently as 1992, when the cooperage was rebuilt. Today, the site represents the fort as it would have looked in the 1840s or ’50s and roughly 80,000 visitors pass through the gates each year. “We’re one of the only (national historic) sites in Canada where visits are going up,” said Johal. Every year, the fort plays host to a number of special events, including Canada Day and B.C. Day celebrations, including Brigade Days, in August, themed events at Halloween and Christmas, candlelight tours and, of course, Douglas Day celebrations each November.
