A charge of second-degree murder has been laid in connection with the death of Ryan Saint Ange of Abbotsford.

Charges were sworn Monday in Abbotsford provincial court against Shayne Steven Vauthrin, 26.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), said Vauthrin was identified as a person of interest, and turned himself in on Sunday after investigators contacted him.

Pound would not release any further details, including how he knew the victim.

According to the provincial court database, Vauthrin, an Abbotsford resident, has no previous criminal chargSAINT ANGE es or convictions. His only entry is for a speeding ticket in Manning Park in 2008.

Saint Ange, 21, was found dead just after midnight on Jan. 14 by a friend who had dropped by to visit him at his home in the 27700 block of 56 Avenue.

Although others lived in the home, nobody else was there when the friend arrived.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has not released the cause of death, but has said that drugs and/or gangs were not connected to the murder.

IHIT conducted a search of a home and property in the 27800 block of Huntingdon Road on Jan. 28 in relation to the investigation, but it is not known what evidence might have been discovered.

Mouat Hawks’ basketball phenom returns just five weeks after open heart surgery

Under the W.J. Mouat Hawks basketball jersey worn by Tristan Etienne is a protective vest.

Under the vest is a six-inchlong scar down the middle of his chest.

Under the scar, Etienne’s sternum is sewn together with wire. The bone won’t be fully fused back together for another four months.

Under the wire beats a heart which used to have a four-centimetre hole in it.

And under a basketball hoop is Etienne, all 6’9” of him, joyfully testing his repaired ticker in a playoff game, just five weeks after open heart surgery.

T T T T Etienne’s journey to the operating table began on Remembrance Day, 2011.

The 15-year-old was relaxing in his bedroom, watching TV, when he suddenly called out for his mom, Mirjana Jurcic.

It took her a moment to understand what was wrong.

Etienne’s T-shirt was bouncing up and down like nothing she’d ever seen.

It was a heart palpitation.

Etienne had been experiencing them almost weekly.

He hadn’t mentioned them because they went away after 30 or 40 seconds.

This one would go on for 45 minutes, and his mom took him to the emergency room at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

From there, Etienne was referred to cardiologists at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, where he was eventually diagnosed with atrial septal defect – a congenital heart disorder.

In utero, a fetus normally has an opening between the two upper chambers of the heart that joins together around the time the baby is born. In Etienne’s case, it never closed.

“It was a fluke that we found out,” Jurcic explained.

“We could have gone years without knowing. In adulthood, it could have been very dangerous for him, in terms of different complications. His heart could have become enlarged because one side was working so much harder than the other.”

T T T T Etienne isn’t your run-ofthe-mill basketball prospect.

He was invited to try out for Canada’s U16 national team last summer, despite being a year younger than the age limit. Hoopstarscanada. com had him ranked No. 3 nationally in the Class of 2014. It’s not hard to imagine an NCAA Div. 1 scholarship in his future.

Hawks coach Rich Ralston calls him the best Grade 10 in the province.

“He’s 6’9” and still growing,” Ralston said. “By the time he’s done, he’ll be the best player we’ve ever had here (at Mouat).”

T T T T Surgeons initially planned a less invasive procedure to access Etienne’s heart, via a vein in his leg. The goal was to insert a closure

device in the gap, but the hole was too big.

So on Jan. 11, Etienne underwent open heart surgery.

Then, on the road to recovery, Etienne stomped on the gas pedal.

One week after the surgery, he showed up at Hawks practice and ran a couple sets of suicide sprints with his teammates – each stride accompanied by a sense that the gruelling drill could have a more literal definition.

He’d been told it would be about two months before he’d be cleared to return to game action, but at the five-week mark, doctors gave him the green light.

Last Friday, in the Fraser Valley East AAA league semifinal against the Yale Lions, Etienne entered the game five minutes into the

first quarter. In short order, he was knocked to the floor while battling for a rebound.

Watching from the stands, Jurcic’s heart might have skipped a beat. Had it been the right thing to do, letting him play so soon? But Etienne bounced back up and ran down the court, and mom breathed a sigh of relief.

“It was a rush, like a kid on a sugar high,” recalled Etienne, who finished with four points and five rebounds as Mouat rallied for a 72-63 win. “I just had so much energy built up from not being able to do anything.

“My cardio wasn’t affecting me – I still had energy – but my chest would get sore from overuse. So I’d have to sit down for a few minutes.”

T T T T From all accounts, Etienne is the ultimate teammate – a humble kid who’s more worried about helping his team win than padding his stats.

One gets the sense the soft-spoken youngster is a bit embarrassed by the media attention his return has garnered.

His mom says it’s important for him to do the interviews, though, in order to say thankyou to the doctors who helped him through his ordeal, and to the basketball community that showered him with encouragement.

The basketball teams from Terry Fox Secondary and White Rock Christian Academy both made Etienne get-well cards covered with signatures. And when he attended Mouat games in person during his convalescence, countless opposing players and fans sought him out.

“I’d go watch my team play, and people who I either didn’t remember or had never met, they’d come up to me on the sideline and say something to make me feel a little better,” he said with a smile.

Pat Lee, who co-coaches the Hawks along with Ralston, marveled at Etienne’s fearlessness through the entire process.

“I’ve never seen a kid with that kind of courage,” he said. “He must have hit the floor three times on the first shift of his first game.

“As a coach, you get to see a lot of great moments. But that will go down as one of the greatest of my coaching career.”

A 33-year-old man who was the victim of a random attack in Abbotsford on Saturday night required 33 staples to close three wounds.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the victim and police believe he was assaulted because he was wearing a vest that resembled biker-gang attire – with the logo of the “Brewsers” music club to which he belongs.

“This guy is a 100 per cent upstanding citizen. He’s not involved in gangs and drugs; he’s involved in music,” MacDonald said.

The man was walking in the 31400 block of Maclure Road, en route from his home to a friend’s residence, at about 6:45 p.m., using the sidewalk on the north side of the street.

He was wearing headphones and did not hear the two assailants run up behind him. They began punching him, and when the victim started to defend himself, one of the men grabbed his arms and pinned them behind his back.

This vest, which bears the logo of a music club, may be the reason for an unprovoked attack on the man wearing it last Saturday.

MacDonald said the other man then struck the victim and attacked him with an object that police believe was a knife.

MacDonald said it appears that a pass-

ing driver slowed down and honked, which caused the assailants to run away.

The victim then stumbled down the road to a convenience store at the corner of Townline and Maclure, and then onto his friend’s street, where a passerby noticed he was bleeding and called 911.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for three wounds – one each to his chest, thigh and arm.

“He’s pretty upset. He’s most concerned that the Brewsers will be targeted because of mistaken identity,” MacDonald said.

The man is Caucasian and the two attackers were South Asian, but MacDonald said no racial comments were made. The suspects are each described as being in their early 20s, about 5’ 10”, 180 pounds, and cleanshaven. One was wearing a white baseball cap.

Body found in field identified Jimmy Chau, 31, victim of targeted murder

The body found in a field on Farmer Road in Abbotsford on Sunday morning has been identified as 31-year-old Jimmy Chau of Edmonton, Alta.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said that Chau is known to police. His murder appears to be a “targeted and gangrelated homicide,” she added.

“An autopsy has been completed and although the cause of death will not be released, I can tell you the injuries are

consistent with a homicide.”

Pound said IHIT cannot confirm at this time how long Chau had been in the province, whether he had a criminal record and what gang affiliations he might have had.

His body was spotted in a field in the 33600 block of Farmer Road by a passing motorist, who then called police.

Keeping the Warm Zone Three years of pilot project funding almost dry

The women who have been operating The Warm Zone are looking for ways to keep their doors open to women living on the streets in Abbotsford.

Federal funding of $93,000 per year for the three-year pilot project will run out next month, and the lease on their building in downtown Abbotsford near Jubilee Park expires on March 31.

It has been a success, says Michel Giordano, coordinator of the Warm Zone for the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. The centre has been visited by people from other cities wanting to set up similar facilities. “We’re a template for all of Canada.�

When the project started, operators anticipated seeing about 30 women per month, but they now get 30 to 40 different women dropping in daily. They can get some sleep, make themselves something to eat in the kitchen, have a shower and

do their laundry. There is a computer station, as well as art supplies, personal lockers and counselling rooms.

One client said it is her “home away from no home.�

Many of their clients are homeless, drug-addicted and work in the sex trade.

At any given time, there are 120 to 130 “street engaged� women in the city, Zone staff say.

Giordano said the Warm Zone treats clients with respect, and offers help in a non-judgmental fashion. “It isn’t an ‘us’ and ‘them’ environment, it’s a ‘we’ environment,� said Giordano. “We’re just women supporting women.�

A second-year review document offers many comments from clients. A typical response indicates a woman comes to the Warm Zone to use the washroom, phone family members, get free needles, use crafts to make a card for her friend, and access a FoodSafe course. Giordano said fatalities among these women have been eliminated, and pregnancies are significantly down. “There are some women who I know for certain wouldn’t be alive today if we weren’t here,� she said.

The Warm Zone has become a place that is used by a variety of agencies to contact people living on the streets, including probation, parole and police officers and mental health workers. It is a place where medical services can be offered, such as HIV testing.

On March 6, Mayor Bruce Banman and city manager Frank Pizzuto will tour the building, and the city will consider a request from the Women’s Resource Society to provide a new space.

Giordano will also be soliciting funding from the provincial government and various sources.

Three random, tragic deaths.

One thing in common.

They all took ecstasy.

And it killed them.

One was an accomplished figure skater and rugby player. Another was a budding musician.

All had lives full of promising potential ahead of them.

And it was all snuffed out, due to a little pill that was supposed to make them feel good.

In Cheryl’s case, it was ostensibly to help with weight control.

But that’s the problem with ecstasy, or MDMA, and its even more unpredictable imitators. They often do far more than what they’re supposed to do.

Taking ‘E’ is playing chemical roulette.

You could do it once, and feel good.

You could do it a lot, and stay lucky.

Or, you could do it one more time – or just once in your life – and lose.

Eighteen young people have died in B.C. in the past 14 months due to this drug, or some concoction sold as ecstasy.

That’s the other big issue with the little pills with the cute names such as hug drug, candy, beans, scooby snacks, pingers, thizz and care bears.

Like the party snack Bits & Bites – you get something different in every handful.

Crystal meth, cocaine, LSD, OxyContin, ketamine (an anesthetic used by veterinarians), GHB (a daterape drug), and a long list of other highly toxic, wild-card substances are thrown into the recipes by the

backroom, bathtub chemists.

The latest, deadliest ingredient to lace the alphabet soup of ecstasy is PMMA. It’s another synthetic stimulant, five times more powerful than MDMA, and slower to react.

Like the party snacks Bits & Bites, you get something different in every handful.

That encourages users to take another dose, and maybe even more after that.

And then suddenly, in some users, the body boils over.

If the temperature remains high for more than an hour, the chance of death or permanent brain damage is 75 per cent.

MDMA/PMMA was responsible for five of the B.C. ecstasy deaths last

year.

Tyler was one of them.

Eventually, the PMMA tainted pills might disappear off the street. Losing one’s buyers isn’t good for the drug trade, after all.

But, as emergency room doctors point out, that will just leave the rest of the ecstasy variants out there, and the dying will continue.

It doesn’t have to be this way, of course.

There is a way to end the twisted, ugly irony of this drug called ecstasy.

Young people can listen to the messages being delivered by police, and medical authorities, and school officials, and hopefully, every parent and caregiver out there.

That message is simple. Say no.

Or, you don’t have to listen to the police and doctors and teachers and parents.

Just listen to Tyler and Cheryl and Kato.

But that’s impossible, you say.

They’re dead.

That’s right.

Listen to their silence.

It says everything.

letters Judging buses from car seat I’m bemused each time I hear comments such as those expressed in the recent letter to the editor by Jason Alexander, about the waste he perceives when he glimpses transit buses travelling with apparently modest numbers of passengers.

Four years ago, after entering retirement, my family got rid of the second family car and I now often take transit in both Mission and Abbotsford. I have heard Jason’s complaint before, but mostly from people who observe the buses from afar; not from those who actually ride the buses.

The notion of purchasing a whole different set of smaller transit buses for those periods of less demand may seem sensible on the face of it, until one starts thinking of the challenges of maintaining two different types of fleets, not to mention the logistics of trying to figure out when and where a particular driver or bus might be needed. While smaller buses might frequently well serve many passengers, I suspect that Jason would not favour being passed by on a cold rainy day at those times when the smaller bus might be full because someone

didn’t appropriately consider the potential demand.

Now that I am a bus rider, I know that the larger buses have special features that allow access. Many, if not most, of the larger buses can be adjusted to the curb level by the driver, allowing access for people with small children or children in strollers. This works for wheelchairs as well. Aside from all that, my own sense is that the service is well used in Mission and Abbotsford. But clearly, not everyone rides around the whole bus route. People are coming and going all the time, often only for shorter portions of the full circuit.

It is easy to be critical of the effectiveness and efficiency of this important community service when sitting behind the wheel of an automobile and catching a passing glimpse.

But when one is making such assessments, one might consider the costs incurred by the community in order to support hundreds of mostly empty automobiles, SUVs, and other personal vehicles scooting around our region – empty except for a driver.

Now the taxpayers have to bail out another Plan A building, being the Reach Gallery Museum. When will this end?

I can’t believe the City of Abbotsford gave the Reach Gallery museum $625,000 of taxpayers’ money. We are already bailing out the AESC. These building are suppose to sustain themselves.

Then now I’m also reading that the taxpayer-owned Ledgeview

golf course needs $250,000. If these businesses can’t make it without handouts from the taxpayer then they should close.

The only building left in the Plan A group that hasn’t asked for more money is the useless box that was built at the ARC, but wait, it’s only a matter of time before they want more money. No wonder our taxes are ridiculously high.

In the wake of several ecstasy deaths across the province, the Abbotsford school district and other agencies have set up a substance abuse review task force.

District superintendent Kevin Godden said at Monday’s board of education meeting that the role of the task force is to look at the agencies’ “collective response” to youth drug issues and come up with recommendations.

“We felt it was important to do something now,” Godden said, referring to the ecstasyrelated deaths of two Abbotsford young people late last year.

The committee will include representatives from local schools, the District Parents’ Advisory Council, the Abbotsford Police Department (APD), community agencies and students.

data about substance use among students in Abbotsford; – the range of prevention programs offered at local schools; – the effectiveness of current intervention programs for high-risk students; and – the extent to which community resources are working with the district in responding to the problem.

The task force has been asked to provide a report by June 15 to the board of education.

Meanwhile, the district is working with the APD on an information campaign – called Operation X – to warn students and parents about the dangers of ecstasy and other street drugs.

The APD announced the initiative on Monday.

More slots to get a second look A request for more slot machines at Abbotsford’s Chances Community Gaming Centre will get a second look from council.

Four weeks ago council denied the request, which would see the centre increase its machines from 125 to as many as 300.

But Mayor Bruce Banman brought the request back on Monday night. While the zoning change was not given first reading, council did approve Banman’s request to reconsider the situation.

Staff will now prepare a new report on the expansion for at a future meeting. If first reading is approved, it would then go to a public hearing.

Coun. Simon Gibson, who voted against the proposal the first time, reiterated his objections. “I’m not surprised this is being brought back, but I’m disappointed. I felt that council, by its vote last time, showed some leadership.�

But Coun. Dave Loewen, who also voted against the initial proposal, felt that a second look may not be a bad idea. “Upon reflection, I concur that the least we can do is to hear them out and I’m going to vote in favour of sending this to public hearing,� he said.

Bradner gets public art funding A new piece of public art will be constructed in the Bradner area.

Four Valley mayors are willing to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk in an effort to promote health and fitness throughout B.C. Challenge founder Matt Young, Innovative Fitness president, said organizers put the challenge to the mayors with the hope that their communities’ residents, and others from across B.C., will be inspired to take part.

Once registered, participants will have access through the website to all types of healthy living and fitness resources, and will also be able to track their fitness progress over the course of the program.

FEBRUARY IS WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH

One of the primary objectives of Rotary is to build goodwill and promote peach throughout the world. To help others, we must first understand their needs within the context of their own culture, circumstances, and day to day lives.

Our local club works with projects internationally.

Last year we participated through our District in the building of a school in Afghanistan, and providing materials for the students’ education.

This building will provide schooling on an ongoing basis to many children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend school.

An active member of our club, Ken Funk, a retired businessman, has been personally involved in numerous Rotaplast missions, and is currently a member of their board of directors. These missions involve providing free reconstructive operations to children with cleft lips and/or palates. Each mission assists 100 children, and Ken has been involved in 15 different missions all over the world to-date. He always returns with stories of children’s lives being changed by giving them hope, acceptance and a future.

Another program Rotary International is involved with is Polio Plus. Since its inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine.

All of these projects, while very different, do build goodwill and promote peace. The healthier and more educated a community, the greater the opportunity to foster friendship and acceptance of others.

Sexual assault charges have been laid against an Abbotsford man for an incident that allegedly occurred last October while he was on a camping trip in Chilliwack.

Gilles Robert Leger, 43, has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference of a child under 16, dating back to Oct. 1, 2011.

According to a source who did not want to be identified, Leger lived in the Matsqui Village area of Abbotsford for several years, but recently moved to Langley.

The source said Leger runs a renovation business.

He is formerly from Moncton, New Brunswick. According to the provincial court database, Leger was convicted in 2001 of breaching his probation in Moncton, although it is not known for what he was previously convicted.

Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth of the Chilliwack RCMP said Leger does not have any prior sexual offences on his record.

She said she could not provide further details on the case, as it is now before the courts.

Leger is next expected to appear in court on March 5.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is aiming this year for a 10 per cent reduction in violent gang and drug crime, and the laying of charges against 40 key gang associates.

The 2012 Strategic Plan, presented Tuesday at the monthly police board meeting, also calls for 10 per cent reductions in property crime and robberies, and a 25 per cent drop in crashes resulting in injuries.

Lucy said another priority issue for police is traffic safety. Following 15 vehicle-related fatalities in 2010, the APD hired four more officers for its traffic unit, and those members were phased in through 2011.

Now that they are all in place, the APD can focus on further enforcement and increased awareness of issues such as pedestrian safety.

Bigs get rolling Bowl for Kids Sake in March This fundraiser is right up your alley.

Bowl for Kids Sake, one of the major fundraisers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley, comes to Abbotsford in March.

The “Bigs” will be at Dogwood Bowling and Billiards March 8 and 9, and at Galaxy Bowl on March 30 and 31.

Social enterprise grants available The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) has announced that its 2012 granting program will focus on providing local charities with funding to explore social enterprise opportunities or enhance existing ones.

The program helps charities be more financially sustainable by operating businesses.

“Social enterprise is any organization or business that uses the sale of goods and/or services to pursue a public benefit mission. A traditional example is a thrift store or a hospital cafeteria, but today charities are entertaining new types of businesses,” said ACF executive director Susan McAlevy.

Local examples include the Salvation Army’s Cascade Culinary Arts School (which offers catering services), and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

The foundation’s granting program is only open to registered charities providing services in Abbotsford, and operating or planning to operate

a “social enterprise.”

The grants program includes two grant streams. The first, a partnership with Enterprising Non Profits, will offer up to $10,000 to Abbotsford charities exploring social enterprise.

These grants will cover up to half of the costs of concept exploration, market research, a feasibility study, or a business plan. The application deadline is May 24, and requires participation in a social enterprise workshop, to be held on March 20 at UFV’s Abbotsford campus.

The second grant stream is geared towards charities seeking to enhance or expand an existing social enterprise in Abbotsford. This grant of up to $4,500 will cover up to 60 per cent of costs for equipment, marketing campaigns, or strategic expansion.

The application deadline for this ‘operations’ grant is March 23.

BC JOBS PLAN: FORESTRY

The B.C. brand of wood products is well established globally with market-leading shares in key countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. B.C. is also looking to be the first major country that deals in softwood lumber to establish its products in the India marketplace. Working with the federal government and industry, the Province has strengthened and diversified the B.C. forest sector by increasing market demand for softwood lumber throughout Asia.

The global demand for bio-products from the forest is predicted to reach $200 billion a year. Renewable fuels, plastics, and chemicals for the pharmaceutical and food industries can potentially be manufactured by running wood fibre and residues through bio-refinery.

B.C. has taken steps to make it easier for the non-lumber sector to source supplies of lower quality fibre. This includes fibre supply licences to cut to use logging debris that is left behind on landings and roadsides.

Taking care of this natural abundance is critical. An amazing statistic is the fact B.C. has planted more than six billion trees since reforestation programs began in the 1930’s, and is on track to plant its seven billionth tree in 2013/14. We plant an average of 200 million trees each year. B.C. produces more wood products certified to environmental standards than any other region in the world and has 53 million hectares certified to one of three internationally recognized sustainable forest management certification standards.

Growth now and in the future requires a solid foundation. B.C. created the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to deal with increasing demands and pressures on the land base by taking a more integrated approach to managing B.C.’s natural resources. BC Hydro launched a two-phase Bioenergy Call for Power. Phase one has helped advance bioenergy development in Kamloops, Castlegar and Prince George, while phase two has done the same for Chetwynd, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Merritt.

B.C. has also passed the Wood First Act to promote and encourage a cultural shift that will make wood the first choice for construction in the commercial and institutional sectors as well as residential.

The future looks very bright for this most iconic of British Columbia industries.

The latest edition of the Yale Lions senior girls basketball team has always had a knack for making history.

Two years ago, the Lions’ current crop of Grade 11 and 12 players won the school’s firstever Fraser Valley junior girls title.

On Tuesday evening, they added to that legacy, beating the Maple Ridge Ramblers 68-65 to clinch a trip to the B.C. AAA Basketball Championships.

“I’ve heard it’s the first time in 20 years that the senior girls have qualified for provincials,” enthused Lions head coach Euan Roberts. “For the school and the basketball program, it’s fantastic. All the girls are really excited.”

The Lions hosted one of the Fraser Valley Tournament’s preliminary quadrants, and they opened the regional playoff with a 68-65 win over Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey on Monday.

The Yaleans met Maple Ridge in Tuesday’s quarter-finals with a B.C. berth on the line, and found themselves down five at halftime. But they cranked up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, out-scoring the Ramblers by 13 points in the frame, and expanded the lead as high as 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lions missed a bushel of free throws down the stretch to make the final score closer than it probably should have been, but they got the job done.

“It had a lot to do with our defence,” Roberts said, noting that his team got a lot of mileage out of trapping the Ramblers’ ballhandlers when they crossed halfcourt. “We got some steals and some buckets out of our defence, which is what we preach all year. Defence leads to offence.”

Rivermen rally, beat Heat in shootout The Abbotsford Heat simply couldn’t sink the Peoria Rivermen on Tuesday evening.

The host Rivermen rallied twice, including a game-tying goal

by Adam Cracknell in the final minute of the third period, and prevailed in the shootout to claim a 4-3 victory.

The Heat opened a 2-0 lead on goals by Ben Walter and Akim Aliu in the first period.

But Peoria leveled the score in the middle frame, as Phil McRae and Brennan Evans beat Abby goalie Danny Taylor.

The Heat went ahead once more at 5:54 of the third, as the red-hot Walter notched his second of the night. The centre has four goals and an assist over his past four games.

But with just 48 seconds left and goalie Ben Bishop on the bench for an extra attacker, the Rivermen got a fortunate bounce, as the puck caromed in off Cracknell’s leg to knot the score.

In the shootout, Peoria’s Derek Nesbitt and Brett Sterling scored, while Hugh Jessiman was the lone Heat shooter to solve Bishop. It marked Abbotsford’s first shootout defeat – they’d won their first five breakaway contests this season.

The loss left the Heat (28-20-3-1) seventh in the Western Conference, one point back of the Rivermen (29-22-2-1), who have played two more games.

The Heat continue their road trip with three games in three days – Friday at the Milwaukee Admirals, Saturday at the Chicago Wolves, and Sunday back in Peoria.

CORNIES Vern 1948 ~ 2012 Vern passed away peacefully in his 64th year on February 21st after a very courageous journey with lung cancer. He was predeceased by both parents Abram and Mary Cornies and his sisters Hedy and Leona. He leaves behind his LOML (Love of My Life) and best friend, his wife of 45 years, Karilyn, his daughter Kim (Dale) grandsons Jakob and Nicholas and his son Michael (Tina) and grandson Joshua. He also leaves his brothers Ernie (Sheila) and Walter (Margaret), and many family members and friends.

Vern was a journeyman carpenter and loved to work with all things construction and wood. Although, family was the most important part of his life. “Family” for Vern meant more than just genetics. Many counted him as a dear part of their lives. He loved to golf, have coffee with friends and vacation in Mexico. A celebration of his life will be held at 12:30 pm on Saturday, Feb. 25th at Sevenoaks Alliance, 2575 Gladwin Road.

Vern (Dad), you will be dearly missed and live forever in our hearts ~ ‘til we meet again’. In lieu of flowers donations to the Christine Morrison Hospice in Vern’s name would be so welcomed.

Passed away February 18, 2012 at the age of 80 years.

He is survived by Yolanda, his loving wife of 15 years; his sons Doug and Richard and other extended family members and many dear friends.

Passed away peacefully at ARH in the arms of Luella, his loving wife of 59 years, and by his side, his three daughters; Marilynn, Bonnie, Cheryle and son-in-law Peter. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Jason (Michelle), Joey (Leslie), Jeremy (Lindsay), Brandon (Kelly), great-grandchildren; Taylyr, Phoebe, Cameron, Brienna and numerous extended family.

Dale commenced his career at the BC Penitentiary in 1956 and retired from the Correctional Service of Canada in 1995. After retirement, he worked for the Corps of Commissionaires and the Abbotsford Police Dept.

Dale also served many years as an RCMP Auxiliary Officer.

He will be remembered for his love of family and life.

It is with heartfelt gratitude we would like to thank the aides (team 4), nurses and doctors for the special care given to our husband and father on Baker 2.

A gathering for Dale will be announced at a later date.

Donations may be made in Dale’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jantje; children George (Pam), Sid (Winny), Jane, Ray (Marian), Grace (Leonard), Fred; 16 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Popke came to Canada on his honeymoon to pursue his dream of farming. He spent many years dairy farming before switching careers to become a milk tester until his retirement. With his wife by his side, he enjoyed those retirement years travelling the backroads and byways of the country he loved. He was an active member of his church and a strong supporter of Christian education and Christian ministries worldwide.

The family wishes to express gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Menno Home for their kind and loving care. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012, at 1:00 pm at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church, 34631 Old Clayburn Rd., Abbotsford. Shirley is survived by 6 stepdaughters and 1 step-son, Janice Rutgers (Ken) of Bellingham, WA Lynne Sweet (Steve) of Apache Junction, AZ, Suzanne Sorensen (Gordon) of Edmonton, AB John Stewart (Priscilla) of Montgomery, AL, Jeanne Bryden (Murray) of Victoria, Sandi Hess (Danny) of Victoria, Debby Kendz (Mitch) of Victoria. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Madeline Alce of Ontario, nieces, nephews and many friends. Pre-deceased by her first husband, George Inrig, second husband, David Stewart, 3 brothers and their wives, 1 sister, 2 brother-in-laws, 1 nephew and 2 nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held at Central Heights MB Church, 1661 McCallum Road, Abbotsford on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm.

Apr. 9, 1957 – Feb. 10, 2012 Passed away suddenly but peacefully in her sleep at age 54 in her Maple Ridge home.

Cynthia was born in Saskatoon, SK, the daughter of Frank and Ruth (nee Rempel) Klassen. She was born the second oldest of four children into a loving family, but faced many challenges throughout her all too short life. Cynthia shared her mother’s remarkable memory for birthdays and anniversaries as well as enjoyed a gift for writing poetry. She also had an amazing sense of humour, even in her darkest hours, cheering up many a person with her phone calls. Cynthia was a devoted Christian, baptized in Richmond Bethel Mennonite Brethren Church on Aug. 17, 1975.

Cynthia is predeceased by her mother Ruth and survived by her father Frank Sr. as well as brothers Frank, Lorne and Jeff along with her sister-in-laws Karen, Wendy/Rose & Kate; nieces and nephews Kaila (Kevin - daughters Ava & Evvy), Kelsey, Philip (Lian), Elise and Aaron. During Cynthia’s hardest times, she appreciated the love and support of her family along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A time of sharing and celebrating Cynthia’s courageous life will take place at the Holiday Inn Magnolia Room, 8750 204th Street, Langley on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 2 pm. A reception will follow.
