Author donates funds to children’s centre Local author Trina Ayling and artist Micheline Ryckman recently concluded over two months of fundraiser readings for the Kootenay Child Development Centre. Ayling and Ryckman launched their Âżrst book, Miss Emily Goes to Bat, in mid October of 2011 and offered to donate 20% of the retail cost for sales through December 2011 to the Centre. To promote the fundraiser, the duo held readings at a number of schools, local libraries and bookstores in the East Kootenay area. “A children’s book is such a great tie-in to the Center because literacy is so important to a child’s learning and development,â€? said Ayling. “We liked the idea that when people bought our book they were investing in their child as much as the Development Centre.â€? Ayling advised that they sold around 70 books at the fundraisers and that allowed them to donate over $200 to the Centre. “Our next book should be coming out in the spring, and we hope to continue to support the Centre,â€? said Ayling. The Kootenay Child
Development Centre will house a number of child practitioners and specialists which will reduce travel costs and undue stress for families who are currently forced to travel in order to receive the specialist

The Cranbrook Junior Curling Club hosted its Fun Day recently and it was fun and curling allround. “This was our very ¿rst “Fun Day” and it
was a huge success in that everyone had a lot of fun,” said Maureen Augustine. There were 32 participants – 8 teams in total (ages 10 – 15) from
Cranbrook, Kimberly, Creston, Invermere and Sparwood. “Special thanks to parent volunteers. And a very special thank you to the Cranbrook Senior Curling Club who sponsored the Cranbrook Juniors for their Team shirts. Many seniors chose individual juniors and sponsored them with a Team Curling Shirt and are also planning to play with their juniors at a special Jr./ Sr. event Wednesday, February 29th.” said Augustine. The visiting teams are already planning to do similar events next year through out the valley.
UCT donates $10,000 to bursary Submitted
The United Commercial Travellers (UCT), formerly the Associated Canadian Travellers (and more casually known as ‘the Cavepeople’ in regional parades), has donated $10,000 to College of the Rockies for a Robert Field Memorial Bursary. The bursary will support local students, with ¿nancial need, who are continuing in a full-time health program at COTR, preferably the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Licensed Practical Nursing programs. College of the Rockies’ Financial Aid and Awards Of¿cer Lois Murray said, “The College is very grateful to the many local and regional businesses, organizations and clubs who donate money to support our students. The College matches permanent award donations so this $10,000 will be doubled to $20,000, which will be invested, and the interest will create a new $500 award for next year and years to come.” The Cranbrook Chapter of the UCT was granted its charter in May of 1956 from the Canada-wide association, one of whose

An example of a decorative fence for a rural property. JRJ Fencing appreciates that your fencing style is unique and works with you to achieve the look you want or need. Good fences don’t only make good neighbours—a good fence also makes for good security, animal care and property enhancement. JRJ Fencing knows this and has been serving the East Kootenay region since 1999. Jana and Roger Jacobsen believe there is a distinct beauty in quality, custom-crafted fencing that has to be seen to be appreciated. From commercial fencing to residential and ornamental fencing to post installation and agricultural fencing, the Jacobsens know that it takes a different fence
for different purposes. “Each client, each business, and each person has a unique and speci¿c need – it’s our job to ¿nd out what that need is and design a fencing solution that will meet your requirements, and hopefully exceed your expectations,” said Jana. Serving the communities of Moyie, Elko, Fernie, Kimberley, Skookumchuk, Sparwood, Cranbrook and beyond, JRJ Fencing invites you to give them a call and ¿nd a fencing solution for yourself.

MLA Bill Bennett In response to detractors of the latest provincial budget, MLA Bill Bennett weighed in with what he feels are the most important and timely aspects of the province’s ¿nances and how it will deal with them in the future. by Bill Bennett, MLA, Kootenay East • The world is a very tough place right now. Japan, France and Ontario credit ratings were downgraded. • BC on the other hand is on right track. BC maintains its AAA credit rating, we have the lowest personal income tax rates in Canada, and has seen highest retail sales ever, higher employment than most of Canada, mineral exploration 1500 time higher than 2001; • BC is seen internationally as safe place to invest because BC has met or exceeded 9 of 10 of its budget targets and we will meet our budget target for 2013-14 for a balanced budget. (only missed budget target in 10 years was in 2009 and one missed target does NOT make us bad managers as the NDP will be trying to sell). • While it is so that we’ve had some de¿cits, we have very transparently predicted them in our budgets. We chose in 2008 to have temporary de¿cits during recession rather than cut health and education. We can now see daylight because of our prudence. Not many ju-
risdictions are as solid as BC. Strategic Investments to Help Most Vulnerable: • Budget makes careful strategic investments in public services, not throwing cash at everything. • JUSTICE - $22 M savings over 3 years from combining SG and AG into Justice ministry. • But we must also make the systemic changes necessary in our justice system. • Budget announced $237 M into Justice over 3 years • SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT – CLBC ($40 M) , Income Assistance ($294 M for growing case loads for disability assistance etc) • Health funding will continue to go up by not by as large a percentage – for the 11th straight budget. “Cuts” you hear about from the system really mean their increases are not as large as they used to be. • Capital investments - $19.2B in capital spending in next 3 years. This is only possible because our Debt:GDP is at 16 and will go to 18% in 3 years. Canada’s ratio is 35% and Greece’s is 116%, France’s is over 50% Every budget has its Goodies: • Children ¿tness and arts tax credit - $25 per child but with fed grant $100 per child. • Improvement for
HOG - new supplement for low income seniors and veterans. • Home Reno tax credit for seniors wanting to modify their home so they can remain in it. Worth up to $1000 a year regardless if renting or owning. • First Time New Home Buyers – a $10,000 bonus for this ¿scal year if they buy a newly built home. • Promise that there will be no more increases to the carbon tax and carbon tax will be reviewed – ¿rst job is to ¿gure out how to assist agriculture industry from impacts of carbon tax. Personally, I’d like to get rid of it as soon as we can afford to. • Expanding small business venture capital tax credit by $3 M • Eliminating jet fuel tax - very positives for growth of foreign Àights – will help tourism in BC • $165 M for K-12 education (already announced). • Extending Training Tax Credit program. The Opposition Position is Unsustainable & Irresponsible: • Opposition says go ahead and borrow, tax and spend – they refuse to say where they will get the over $6 Billion they have already promised and today they are all over the news saying government should spend yet more hundreds of millions – they should be asked where their plan is and where they propose to get all the money they are promising. • They want to fund what the Teachers Union is asking for which would create billions in extra spending just when BC is turning the corner. • The lesson from around the world (Germany, Australia, Canada) is that those who exercise ¿scal discipline have a competitive advantage. Those who give in to pressures and borrow to spend and then have to raise taxes are not only suffering from serious problems (USA & Ontario), they have the potential for catastrophic problems (Greece). • BC is on right track with Jobs Plan - expanding markets (China, Europe) – all exports up in 2011, diversifying away from sole dependence on US.

Clarkson photography show at KCT
PHOTO BRIAN CLARKSON
One of the photos of Brian Clarkson’s adventures. Brian Clarkson has always followed the road less traveled — literally and ¿guratively. This path has led him through a 50-year career as a photographer, and also along the byways of the world where humanity is to be found at its most colourful and vibrant. It is this humanity, which
we are all part of. That is the subject of a special retrospective of his work, running at the Key City Theatre until March 19. For the past 25 years, Clarkson has combined his passion for photography with a growing dedication to humanitarian work.
Most recently, Clarkson is currently involved with Hungry for Life, a local group of which does humanitarian work for poverty-stricken Haiti. In addition to Clarkson’s exhibit Brian will be hosting a slide show, a retrospective of his photojournalism career and travels on February

28th at the Key City Theatre. Reception will start at 6:30 p.m., slide show will start at 7 p.m. Clarkson’s work is an effort to show how small the world really is. Clarkson sums up this philosophy with a simple sentence. “If I can affect one person’s life I feel I’ve done my job.

Can Go. In 1909, twenty-¿ve year-old Conrad Kain, from the tiny Austrian village of Nasswald, located in the heart of the Rax Mountains, boarded the CPR ship
the Empress of Britain, en route to the Canadian Rockies. Never did he imagine the adventurous life that lay before him, as the ¿rst of¿cial mountain guide of the newly formed Alpine Club of Canada (ACC).

presents the
young man to his later years in and around Wilmer in the Columbia Valley. With almost 70 ¿rst ascents or new routes on peaks throughout the Canadian Rockies and 59 ascents (29 ¿rst ascents) in New
Zealand, Conrad Kain, was recognized as “the prince of Canadian mountain guides” – in what can only be called the Golden Age of mountaineering in Canada. Conrad Kain has an enduring legacy in
the Canadian Rockies and he is still fondly remembered for his mountaineering skills and colourful sense of humour. “It is my hope that this book, Raising Kain, the adventurous life of Conrad Kain – Cana-
da’s greatest mountaineer, captures the rich heritage and legacy that Conrad Kain left behind in his relatively short but extraordinary life in the Canadian Rockies,” said Keith Powell, author and publisher.

As of April 1, 2013, subject to the approval of the Legislature of BC and the Parliament of Canada, British Columbia will return to the PST/GST system, with a general PST rate of seven per cent and federal GST rate of five per cent. As promised, exemptions and other aspects of PST will look the same as before. Effective April 1, 2012, purchasers of new secondary recreational homes will be eligible for a provincial HST grant on homes priced up to $850,000, for a maximum rebate of $42,500. This policy applies only to that part of BC outside Greater Vancouver and Victoria, thanks to Finance Minister Kevin Falcon and Bill Bennett, MLA. These new rules ensure equitable treatment among purchasers and will help mitigate distortive market behavior. As always, previously occupied (used/resale) housing is not subject to PST or HST, whether that home is purchased as a principal or secondary residence. Additional information about BC’s PST transitional rules and temporary transition measures for new housing is available at http://www.pstinbc.ca

Denture fitting is important for all wearers One of the unfortunate problems some senior citizens have is the inability to have a stable and comfortable lower denture. Approximately 25% of people 65 years and older have no natural teeth. If they have been without teeth for some time the jaw bone shrinks, often resulting in a very loose lower denture. This can be embarrassing

and uncomfortable and usually means a person has great difÂżculty chewing their food and may be afraid to go out to eat. A loose denture also constantly moves around in the mouth creating sores from chaÂżng the gums. Denture adhesives are messy and taste bad, so they are an unpleasant way to help stabilize a denture.

It is important that a denture be reÂżtted periodically to adapt to the changed jaw shape, but because of the bone loss it is often very difÂżcult to Âżt a lower denture properly. Now there is a solution that can make a major improvement in the quality of life for people with this problem. Just think of what it might mean to a loved one to be able to enjoy all kinds of food without worrying about denture sores or the embarrassment of having to pass up on some of the good things being served at a family get together. Mini implants are small titanium screws that are placed in the jawbone with minimal discomfort using simple local anesthetic and usually without surgery. Once they are placed they usually can be used the same day to secure a denture so it does not move around in the mouth when chewing.

Loose-Âżtting dentures can affect a person’s enjoyment of life. This helps keep food from getting under the denture and creating sores in the mouth. The mini implants stick out of the gum like little “trailer hitchesâ€? with the ball just out of the gum. The denture is relined or made with the “socketâ€? part built into the denture. When it is seated, it grips the four to eight little balls which keep the denture from moving around. The denture can be removed for cleaning, but otherwise it does not bounce around like an unsupported denture usually does. Regular sized implants are also available but they are much more expensive and take longer to heal before they can be used. So can everyone have these little marvels? Well almost anyone can, even if much of the bone has disappeared over the years. Even people whose health might not be good enough for larger surgery can usually have the mini implants placed with just a little freezing of the gum. The process takes an hour or so to install the implants and then the dentist or denturist can reline the denture right away so that the person does not need to go without their denture for more than a few hours. Then after a short healing period people who previously had difÂżculty eating apples or other healthy foods can enjoy the simple pleasure of chewing without pain or fear of loose dentures again. If you suffer from loose or ill-Âżtting dentures or have a loved one who does, consider asking Ken or Adam at the Cranbrook Denture Clinic or Dr. Williams for a free consultation to see what mini implants might do to dramatically improve your quality of life. You can view testimonials of people who have experienced the beneÂżts of mini implant stabilized dentures at www.discoveryoursmile.ca.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to ¿ll all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

Perennials for 2012 Before new growth appears and a riot of colour begins to fill up yards and gardens, it is time now to look at the “skeleton” and start planning for the next growing season. We have already talked about some new plants coming up in the areas of edibles, nursery and annuals. Today, I want to give you a glimpse at what’s coming up for perennials in 2012. One of the trends is dark colours and bold contrasts. Two new varieties of hollyhocks are designed to make a stunning backdrop for any garden. The ‘Spotlight Black Knight’ has single, nearly black flowers while ‘Spotlight Mars Magic’ sports vibrant red blooms. These plants like to have sun exposure and will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Although most hollyhocks are considered biannuals, these new varieties are true perennials and will bloom in the first year. The new salvia ‘Madeline’ is also a great plant to make these winged visitors return to your garden. This variety forms large, bushy clumps and will reach up to 30 inches in height. If sheared, the salvia will re-bloom with its unique cobalt blue and white flowers. Like other salvias, this plant is deerresistant. Penstemon, commonly called beard tongue, is also loved by hummingbirds and the ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Blue Riding Hood’ will add a huge splash of colour to the garden with their bright scarlet and sky blue flowers. Their compact growth makes them perfect for smaller spaces. The Hosta of the Year for 2012 is not relying on its fragrant lavender flowers to make a bold statement. ‘Liberty’ impresses with its large blue-green foliage with wide, irregular yellow margins that will mature to a creamy white by midsummer. The mature size for this plant is over 25 inches tall and close to 40 inches wide. Yellow appears as a trend colour for 2012 as there are several new varieties in all different hues. The flowers of the heliopsis, also known as false sunflower, ‘Summer Nights’ have deep golden yellow petals with mahogany-red centres. This plant blooms well into the fall. Reddish stems and red tinged foliage only add to the appeal and make this deer-resistant plant a must-have. Aptly named ‘Sunshine’, a new columbine sports bright yellow double flowers. This is one of the tallest varieties of columbines at close to 30 inches tall. The rudbeckia ‘Little Gold Star’ reaches only about half that height, but turns heads with its bright canopy of golden yellow flowers with brown cones. This is a great alternative to the popular ‘Goldstrum’ variety if you are looking for a stunning effect in a smaller garden. Both plants are deer-resistant as well. The toad lily ‘Golden Festival’ is a shorter plant as well with compact, green foliage with clusters of yellow, orchid-like flowers with maroon spots. This is a vigorous grower and late summer bloomer that likes part sun to full sun exposure. Usually toad lilies are hardy to Zone 5, but the ‘Blue Wonder’ has performed and wintered incredibly well in our area. There are many more new and exciting perennials for 2012, including two new daylilies ‘Rocket City’ and ‘Wineberry Candy’ that dazzle with orange and purple blossoms. Two very fragrant plants are the early blooming peony ‘Duchess de Nemours’ with large double white flowers and the dwarf-phlox ‘Pixie Twinkle’ with light pink flowers and darker pink eyes. So take a good look at your garden and find those bare spots that can be filled in with new offerings and interesting combinations. Till next time... happy gardening, Submitted by Myrna

Jacob Smaldon May 4, 1976 – February 22, 2007 Darling Jacob, It is unfathomable that ¿ve years have passed since the night that our hearts were shattered with the news that all families dread. That news forced us to realize the fragility of life. Everything was so perfect, and in one instant, our world was changed forever. It was a cruel wind that blew on the night of February 22, 2007. The pain we all felt can still bring each of us to our knees with agony. We struggled through our loss, but in our faith we carried on. We did not fold our tents. As a family, we continue to honour you with our laughter and our tears. Much of our joy comes from recalling your antics. Smiles cross our faces when we think of your warmth and compassion, your big hugs, and your infectious laugh, but our tears fall freely when we realize you are not just working away anymore. So many things have happened since you were taken from us. Now your nephew Charles Jacob has a little brother, Benjamin Jordan. What joy they would have brought you and how they would have loved their Unkie Jake. They both remind us of the circle of life. We live each day to the fullest, wishing you were physically here with us... but we also feel you here every second of every day. You are in the faces of the people we see, the songs that we hear, the smell of spices and fresh cooking, and in the air that we breathe. Angels carry our love and kisses to you. We will always carry your heart in our hearts. You are in everything we do, and everything we are. Mom, Dad, Lawrence, Kayla, Jordan, Oona, Charlie, Ben, Ashley, David, Kristen and Cameron Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and a multitude of loyal friends

Julia Dechkoff January 7, 1922 — February 13, 2012 Julia was born on January 7, 1922 to William and Annie Postnikoff in Glade, B.C. She had a “green thumb” and was able to grow the most amazing gardens and flower beds which always included a variety of roses. Her other love was her animals which there was always at least one around the house. Julia enjoyed playing cards as well crocheting which she did until her eyes failed her. She was able to keep in touch with all of her friends through her phone calls. Julia passed away peacefully in the Cranbrook Hospital on February 13, 2012 surrounded by her family. She grew up being schooled by Catholic nuns and after high school, worked for The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - Forest Engineering Institute of Indonesia. In 1962, she met her husband Richard, and in 1965, both families immigrated to The Netherlands where they were married and started their beautiful family with the birth of four children, Daniel, Constance, Bianca and Ingrid. In February 1979, with her husband and four children they made another move to Canada and arrived in Calgary to start another chapter in their life adventure.
