In less than a year travellers driving west of Golden will have a brand new bridge to drive on. The Donald Bridge Construction Project, a $63-million undertaking by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, is halfway to its projected two year completion date. “We’ve been here for, pretty much exactly a year now, and things have been going pretty well, said
Mark Graydon, an engineer hired by the ministry to oversee the project. “The area’s changed quite a bit since we first came here. It actually looks like there’s something happening out there now. Much of the first year was spent building foundations, which were difficult to see. So a lot of people didn’t really know there was anything happening out there, said Graydon. This project is a small piece of the Kamloops to Golden Project, an upgrading of the Trans-Canada
Highway that would see four lanes all the way from Kamloops to Golden. “The ministry has a four-laning program between the Alberta boundary and Kamloops, and this fits into that as well, said Graydon. “So basically what’s happening is that after 60 years, these bridges require either replacement or maintenance work. Due to the location of this bridge, and the fact that the geometry didn’t really work, it was decided that it would be replaced. continued on page 10

Golden Star Staff editor@thegoldenstar.net Teachers from Golden stayed out of the classrooms on Monday as part of a legal strike after serving strike notice the previous week. The teachers will be out of the classroom from Monday March 5 through Wednesday March 7 after teachers across the province endorsed the option in a province-wide vote.

Liberals look for input for before road act completed Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The BC Liberals insist that the Natural Resource Road Act currently being worked on is going through the proper consultation process. The Natural Resource Road Act, which will determine the future of the 450,000 kilometres of resource roads in the province, is in its drafting stage, after the formal input process ended in December of 2011. “We want to hear from all user groups... We’ve had a formal process of input, and we’ve received a lot of input as the staff have been developing the framework. That closed in December, said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “But that doesn’t mean that we are not open to continued input. And we continue to receive input. And our staff here are continuing to consult with communities and user groups. So if people want to give input or suggestions, that opportunity is still there,
and all they need to do is contact our staff in the ministry on that. With such a vast number of resource roads in the province, currently being administered by 11 separate pieces of legislation, it is an important issue that needs to be addressed. This is the second attempt by the provincial government to address the issue. “Last time there were concerns about some of the direction in it. I think there were concerns that there hadn’t been enough consultation. So in this process we are working through a very extensive consultation process, said Thomson. “The attempt here is to consolidate all that framework into one act that will benefit all the users of resource roads. “So what we’re hoping is that through the process and the consultation we’ll get an act that streamlines the administration, improves safety, reduces the environmental impacts, improves compliance, and sets consistent standards for building, maintaining and using resource roads. There was concern expressed by NDP
Ronald's Rave Review
MLA Norm Macdonald that this new act may lead to the closure of resource roads in the Golden area, roads that are well utilized for recreational purposes, if not commercial. “What we are looking at is the framework under which resource roads would be managed. And it would be premature at this point to say what all of that will look like... but there have been concerns expressed that our current framework leads towards more deactivation. That’s what we’ve heard from communities, said Thomson. “What we’re looking to do is find a framework that sets up better administration, with the ultimate goal that there will be less deactivation. Both the original discussion paper, which outlines the proposals for the Natural Resource Road Act, as well as a summary of public feedback is available on the ministry website www.gov.bc.ca/for. It is expected that a Bill will be drafted in time to be submitted to the Legislature in the Fall of 2012.

Celebrating Women on March 8 Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Golden Women’s Resource Centre is hosting a performance salon at the Kicking Horse River Lodge. “Every year we have a performance salon. And it is always performed by women, or songs about women. And men can perform as well if they like, said Roni Beauregard, safe home co-ordinator for the resource centre. “We hold the show (at the Kicking Horse River Lodge) every year, and they very graciously let us use that space. Before the show, which usually lasts a couple of hours, you can enjoy some snacks, cake, coffee and tea, or even a glass of wine. “People will be performing songs, poetry, slam poetry, sometimes people act out a skit from a play. Or, sometimes we have some belly dancers, said Beauregard. International Women’s Day, a day to spread awareness on issues pertaining to racism, gender equality, and quality of life, is celebrated in many different ways around the world.
In some countries like Russia and Germany, it is marked as a national holiday. While in other places it is celebrated with book readings, art exhibits, and lectures. “There are many women around the world who will be celebrating this day with protests, still fighting for their rights in their countries, still fighting for equality, rights to education, rights to birth control, working towards change in policy and laws that jeopardize their rights, said Sarah Wegelin, special projects co-ordinator with the resource centre. “Throughout this month, in honour of International Women’s Day and in honour of the women in your lives, the GWRC would like to ask community members to challenge our societal norms. Speak out against sexist jokes, question provocative photos found in the media, celebrate and respect the women in your life. The performance salon is on Thursday March 8 at 7 p.m., and the doors open at 6:15 p.m. They are asking for a $5 donation at the door.“It is a really great evening. And it’s amazing to see all the local talent we have here in Golden, said Beauregard.

The last film going to be shown as a part of Film Kicks will be seen at the Golden Cinema on Thursday, March 15, 2012 – 7:30 p.m. when Oranges and Sunshine is played. The film is set in the 1980s when a social worker from Nottingham named Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson, Punch Drunk Love, Gosford Park) stumbles upon a shocking revelation that spans countries, governments and generations. In her research she learns that thousands of children in the care of British Social Services were illegally and silently deported from

the United Kingdom to Australia in the 1940s. The film follows Humphreys struggles as she attempts to help the families reunite after years apart. At the time many of these children were removed from the care of single mothers or homes that were deemed “unfit,” and the children were told that their parents were dead. Afterwards the children were then popped on ships and sent across the ocean with the promise of “oranges and sunshine” only to be abandoned in church run orphanages where they were neg-

Promises of Oranges and Sunshine at the last night of Film Kicks lected, forced into hard labour, and brutally abused. Blunt’s character is an advocate for the victims of this atrocity of justice. In the film she travels to Australia and works closely with these individuals who were tragically influenced by what had happened and attempts to help them to find the answers that they so desperately seek. This first feature by UK director Jim Loach was an official selection of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Oranges and Sunshine co-stars Hugo Weaving and David Wenham.

Golden Campus Family Law Seminar
On Nov. 9, 2011, the Town of Golden lost a long time resident when Rene Bouchard passed away. After his passing his family learned that Rene had some special deeds he wished to be fulfilled. Gilbert Bouchard is Rene’s brother and has been taking care of his brother’s wishes as he requested in his will. Rene was born in Saskatchewan and worked as a farm labourer in his youth before moving to Golden with his brother Bill where he was employed at Louisiana Pacific. In the will Rene wanted to set up two, one time bursaries to be given out at this year’s graduation celebration at Golden Secondary School. The two $1,000.00 scholarships came with one restriction, one would go to a female and one would go to a male. Gilbert said he felt it was important the money just go to people who need it and are looking to further their education. Principal of Golden Secondary School Iris Trask said that the donation of the bursaries would be a great help for two students who were making the decision to move ahead with their education. Rene also had another wish for a set of golf clubs that he owned. Being an avid golfer for much of his life he wanted a nearly mint condition set of clubs that he owned to go to a young golfer as a way to share the sport that he loved with someone else. The set of clubs was brought to the club along where Gilbert said, “His wishes were to pass on his prized golf clubs to a needy Junior golfer at the Golden Golf Club.” Rene was very proud of being a member of the Golden Golf Club and his hole-in-one he made at the club. Gilbert is very happy he could come to Golden to help make some of his brothers wishes come true and is very proud of the message his brother’s is giving to others. “This has been emotional for me but I am very proud of all he has done and is still doing,” Gilbert said.
Topics will include recent trends in family law including child care matters, as well as child and spousal maintenance. Note: Although there is no charge for this workshop, it is most important that students pre-register to guarantee space availability, and to ensure that the seminar will run.

The battle continues It is a grey and cloudy day for a Monday. Students around British Columbia, like many before, are now trapped in the middle of a strike or job action or whatever other name it goes by. We do know that this will be a short interruption, but even though it will be short it still brings about many questions. - My Way Strike actions have By Darryl Crane always been interesting to me. Teachers, like many other groups in Canada, have the right to strike. But who really wins in the end? The fact is the job action which has led to the mini strike, has been going on so long that people would be hard pressed to remember what started it all. It is almost as if we have entered a movie half way through and now have to ask what started the war between two factions. The fact is this is an issue which has many people upset. Students are angry and have had their walk out to voice their opinion. It is good to see them take a stand for something they believe in especially when many people point to this age groups as being not engaged in what is happening in Canada these days. It did not matter who they were or were not supporting but just that they wanted to have their voices heard. Growing up my parents were occasionally involved in strike actions and I remember hearing the idea that in the end no one really wins. My mother had a theory that the government welcomed strikes because they could save enough money during the time you were out to give you the raise that you wanted. Who knows if there is any truth to this idea? As a student back in the day the words teachers strike simply meant that you had some extra time off from school and no matter what time of the year it was it did seem like a great idea. Of course the older I got the more I realized that losing this time in the classroom was not helping my future. Like with just about everything, hindsight is 20/20 and something should be learned from the past. I myself have never had to go on strike from any job I have worked at. Though while in University, I did have to sit for a month because one of the unions on campus went on strike and none of the others union groups would cross the line. Sitting and waiting to see if you can lean again is tough when you have a desire to learn. This whole job action has been tough on many people. Hopefully both sides can get together and work out a deal, because in the end this dragged out state of affairs is one where nobody will receive any benefits.
The ability to drive Seniors raise serious concerns with driver testing program DriveAble One of most the common phone calls I get in my office from seniors right now is concerning a program called DriveAble. Seniors feel targeted and discriminated against stating that the DriveAble testing is unfair in its application and inaccessible for people from rural communities. DriveAble is a private company that has been hired by the government to provide driver fitness assessments, primarily for seniors. Clearly, we all want to ensure that those who are driving are fit to do so. The seniors who call my office do not want to continue driving if they can no longer do so safely. But they also want to know that the system that judges their competency is both fair and accurate.

requirement for rural seniors who are asked to prove that they are fit to drive. And too often, seniors who may be able to continue to drive safely, are choosing to simply give up their license because they cannot get to Kelowna or Nelson at the prescribed time, with an accompanying person, for DriveAble testing. Again, no one believes that unsafe drivers should be allowed to continue to drive, but I think we can all agree: the process that assesses drivers’ fitness must be equally accessible to all British Columbians. NOTE: This article is part of a two-part series on DriveAble. Part two will deal with questions about the validity of the DriveAble program to accurately assess driver ability. Timbits host tournament Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Golden’s youngest future Rockets, the AB minor hockey Rams, are hosting a tourament on Saturday March 10. Six teams, including Golden, of four to seven year olds will take to the ice to entertain their family and friends. “It’s really exciting to watch your kids play at this age. A lot of the kids are just learning to skate this year, so to see them from the beginning of the year til now, they’ve just made huge leaps and strides,” said Kathy Thorne, hockey mom and tournament organizer. Aside from watching some entertaining young talent, the tournament will be featuring a baking table, an extensive prize table, and a raffle for an NHL game package. “We’re doing a raffle for a trip for two to
the Calgary/Vancouver game in Calgary on April 5,” said Thorne. Aside from the tickets (section 110 row 8) the luckey winners will also receive a $100 prepaid Visa, a $75 meal gift card, and a one-night stay at a Best Western. Raffle tickets are $10 a piece, and only 300 are being printed. The Golden Rams will be playing three games on March 10 at 7:45 a.m., 11 a.m., and 4:25 p.m. “I love coaching them. I feel it’s a huge responsibility to make kids love hockey early,” said AB coach Curt Thorne. “But it’s totally fun, and non-competitive. We’re just working on skill development.” “Everybody wins at this level,” said Kathy. After a three goal discrepancy they won’t even be keeping score. “Everyone is just there to have fun.”
How time flies! And can I say how nice it is to be back to regular weekly columns at the Star! Some of you have been asking for pictures to be included and I am thrilled to share some of the wonderful glimpses of Golden’s past with you. The first column I ever wrote for the Golden Star was published on January 8, 1992, twenty years ago. Here it is to remind you. Curling’s Commandments In 1894, when the Golden Curling Club was first organized, its members composed the Ten Commandments; one was lost over the years and no record of it has been discovered. The Ten Commandments of the Ancient Roarin’ Game of Curling 1. Thou shall have no other game before me, for I am the roarin’ game which was in the beginning (even in the stone-age), is now and ever shall be. 2. Come not upon the ice with the old house broom. Thou canst not quicken the pace of a dying rock with last year’s broom. 3. Thou shalt learn thy turns both the out and the in, for the skip will not hold him guiltless
that throw the wrong turn. 4. Play not a running shot when thou art asked for a guard, lest thou raise thine own shot, so sending the skip in the air; such play getteth his goat, queereth his game, causes him to swallow his cud and to revile thee openly. 5. Thou shall hearken diligently to the defeated skip when his voice is lifted up in lamentation against the puck ice and thou shalt not turn they face from when he blameth the third man. Even so shalt thou secure a listener against the day of thine own defeat. 6. Thou shalt not strew straws from thy broom in the path of thine own or thine adversary’s rock; neither shalt thou spit in front of them causing them to become pork. For even as pork is an abomination to the Jew, so also is a hog in the sight of the skip. 7. Thou shalt have no discourse with thine adversary while his foot is in the hack and his hand is on the rock, but if thou wilt thou canst pray for him. 8. Thou shalt not punch or kick a rock into the house from behind stealthily, for the opposite skip will be kindled against

thee and he will rise up in righteous indignation over the edge of the broom handle and thrust thee hence from the sight of curlers and the days of thy curling will be ended, for this is an unpardonable sin. 9. Thou shalt not cover they opposition’s rock nor his lead player, neither shalt thou filch from him his third man who is his mainstay and a wall of defense in the day of battle.
Keeping busy at Nicholson Elementary Janne Arlt Principal Nicholson Elementary We have many projects and events currently happening. Last week our Grade 7 girls and boys each had the opportunity to spend a day at Camp Wenman for a Big Day Out. This was part of a transition program to help the students in their move to the high school. Activities centered around teamwork and building community, with the goals of having each person feel belonging and safety. A variety of school staff and community members were there to support the students and show them that there are many adults available to help them as they continue their journey into high school, making choices and taking risks.
Many of our primary students have been participating in a soccer tournament every Wednesday at lunch time. The tournament will wind up just after Spring Break! Thanks to Mr. Halvorson and his Grade 4/5 students for organizing and coaching the teams. Intermediate students have been enjoying their spring floor hockey tournament in the past few weeks, set up by some Grade 6/7 students. We are nearing the championship game so the competition is heating up! The Grade 6/7 class enjoyed three trips to Dawn Mountain this past month for cross country skiing. The Golden Nordic Club generously provides coaches and instruction for this annual program and other adult volunteers help to assist the students as they develop their skills and have fun. Mrs. Williams and the Nicky Boppers are gearing up to start
their 2012 season of honing skipping and jump rope tricks this week. The Juggling Club continues to meet weekly to build on their circus skills with volunteer John Denham. FSAs (Foundation Skills Assessments) have been completed by Grade 4 and 7 students. These are provincial measures of students’ abilities in the areas of Reading, Writing and Math. Parents will receive their child’s results shortly after spring break. If you have a child starting kindergarten in September 2011, you can register your child at the school any morning from 8 a.m. to noon from March 5 to 16. A birth certificate and care card number is required for registration. Spring Break is just around the corner. Enjoy the longer days and warmer sunshine as we move into our final term of the year.

The Bra Lady Is Coming to Size You Up
Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.
GOLDEN ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 14
Chapman is coming to

Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the beneďŹ ts of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to ďŹ nd a good-ďŹ tting bra that’s not uncomfortable,â€? Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.â€? Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll ďŹ t somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that ďŹ t comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounceâ€? when you walk while wearing your “everydayâ€? bra? • Do you overow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

Star COMMUNITY
Free day of skiing for locals at Kicking Horse Resort Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has decided it is time to show their appreciation to the community by offering them a free day of skiing. “The whole idea behind it is to create a community ski day in appreciation of Golden and Area A, and invite the residents to the resort, said Steve Paccagnan, president of KHMR. On Sunday March 25, any resident of Golden and Area A, with proof of residency, can go up to the resort and receive a free lift ticket for the day. “For some it could be a
first time visit. For some it will be a revisit, they may not have been here for a number of years, said Paccagnan. “And for those who don’t ski or snowboard and want to come up and sightsee, and maybe ride the gondola, they’ll be able to do that as well. This is the first time that KHMR has offered a free day to the community, but it is something that Paccagnan has wanted to do for quite some time. “With the transition of the resort obviously my priorities have been in different areas, but now I’m able to focus my energy back on the community more. I think this is some-
thing that’s really important for our communities, he said. “Golden has absolutely been good at supporting the resort. It’s a very simbiotic relationship, and we would never take that relationship for granted. We’re working closely with the community in a number of ways to showcase a world class destination resort. The intention is to make this an annual event, although in the future it may take place earlier on in the season. “We plan to have music, and we’re going to be having a community barbecue going, with part of the proceeds being donat-

ed locally to a charity of choice, said Paccagnan. “It’ll be a lot of fun. The resort is scheduled to be open for another month, and Paccagnan is very happy with the season KHMR has had so far. “We’re having a record winter. We’re seeing a resurgence with some of the market coming back,
the international market, he said. “We’ve been very blessed with snow so far, and there’s more coming. For those that really haven’t had their powder fix yet, March can be very strong. We’re going to go hard until April 8, and I think this could be a season to remember.

New Donald Bridge provides safer driving for motorists continued from page 1 The bridge is being changed to four lanes, and the entrance to the bridge on the west side will have a gentler curve. “There’s been a lot of accidents here because if you’re coming from the west and driving down Donald Hill, it’s a big hill and at the bottom there’s this sharp corner onto a bridge. And bridges are notorious for being icy, and trucks are notorious for not wanting to slow down. You get this nice combination, and sometimes they end up in the river,” said Graydon. “This structure is going to provide something that is a lot safer, and won’t require any serious work for
a long time, 60 years or so.” Flatiron Constructors of Canada is the prime contractor on the project, and have hired many local workers. There may be anywhere from 30 to 50 people working on site at a given time, and possibly even more than that in the summer. “In the winter we can’t be doing very much earth work, so right now we just have bridge crews on site working with concrete and steel. Whereas in the summer we’ll have bridge crews and grading crews, and paving crews on site, so lots of activity,” said Graydon. “Once that’s all done there will landscapers coming in to do tree planting, and seeding and stuff like that.”
It was about five years ago that the early stages of this project were getting under way, people were on site drilling to see what kind of ground conditions there were, and with that data started analyzing coming up with conceptual designs. And one year from now it will be finished. “Next year this time we should be gone. It’s a two year job. By December of this year we’re going to be fully completed and out of here, and the old bridge will be demolished. And we’ll all be travelling on a nice new road,” said Graydon. PLUMBING LTD.
Master skiers are simply skiers age 30 and over, who have either raced when they were younger, or discovered the thrill of training and skiing fast more recently. It takes commitment to train so that it feels good to ski fast. Much of the training is done off-season and there are many components to becoming a good masters skier. Skiers learn how to train, how to improve tech-
nique and the art of ski waxing. The Canadian Masters Association exists to foster friendly competition and camaraderie. Nordic Skiing is a sport for life. We see families with three generations skiing together at the same time, enjoying nature, getting fit and having a great time.

For all spectators, you can park in the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort upper parking lot (near the old Whitetooth Daylodge/admin building) and there will be shuttles running between the KHMR parking lot and the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre during each of the four race days. Being fairly new to Nordic Skiing, I’ve picked up a few pointers for the novice spectator. 1. Cheer, clang your cowbell, and urge on the really fit people. They like it, it makes your experience more fun and you’ll feel more engaged in the event. 2. Nordic skiers are amazingly friendly and like it when you show interest. They’ll be happy to give you pointers, explain the events or share some soup with you. 3. Nordic skiers talk about wax a lot. Just nod and talk about the snow being sticky or mention your “kick” and “glide”– you’ll fit in. 4. Nordic skiers tend to be fit and they wear lycra – think about it . . . 5. Nordic skiers like to drink warm sports
drinks. Unless you’re competing and need the electrolytes, I’d recommend the hot chocolate. Warm Gatorade is sort of weird. 6. Double poling while lame when I do it, is really amazing & exciting when world class athletes do – seriously, they go REALLY FAST! 7. Don’t ever walk on the track-set trails (the two indented trails for skis). This is considered very rude and you run the risk of getting run over. 8. Thank a volunteer! The club and events are totally driven by volunteers. Before you complain, take the time to be grateful for the thousands of hours of volunteer effort and passion that went into the creation and maintenance of the trails, the club and the event. 9. Cheer & have fun! 10. Try out some skiing. Rentals are available at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Ask a greeter where to go and they’ll explain where you can have a fabulous time skiing without worrying about racers bumping you.
Depart Golden Nordic Ski Club lot for downtown Golden
Shuttle will pick up from the Saturday Night Banquet Venue at 9:10 p.m. and 10:55 p.m.
Mountain Town Medals Locally produced, mountain heritage inspired, one of a kind medals. Only the best for our participants. Note the gold, silver and bronze on the mountaintops, the climbing rope lanyard and woodburning artwork. Our medallions are made by local craftsman Dave DeMuy
who is also an adventurer and historian. Dave paddled the routes of the voyageurs for 35 years and will give a talk Friday afternoon right after the award ceremony in the Dawn Mountain chalet, about the history of the fur trade and David Thompson.

A True Master Skier: Olwyn Ringheim Sanne van der Ros submitted Recalling the days 80 years ago when her grandfather would take her skiing brought back many memories for Olwyn Ringheim. They’d go out skiing on the hills for about an hour and then her grandfather would say that it’s time to turn around and go back home now (by herself). At age four, Ringheim already learned to be independent on her skis. They used to live right at the edge of the town of Kimberley and Ringheim described: “Our skis were always up against the house. We just grab them and head off to the hills. The ski lodge for downhill skiing was about five miles from home. There were no machines to make tracks to the lodge and sometimes it was darn hard going breaking trail after a snow fall. As a kid, Ringheim used to compete in downhill skiing. It was an entirely different ski hill than it is now as she describes: “There were no lifts but we had night lighting at the big ski hill. After a day of ski racing, you’d be pretty tired after you got home because after racing all day you still had to ski home
five miles through the forest. Ringheim first started cross country ski racing with the Sons of Norway club as there were a lot of Scandinavians in Kimberley. They’d race on the roads in those days. Since then, Olwyn has competed in eight Masters World Championships and she described her first one: “It was a huge experience and I quite enjoyed it. The first time was in Austria. That almost scared me because the course was very steep and people were yelling in different languages but it was a great experience to race overseas. I wish everyone could do this because you learn so much, broaden your mind, and see some beautiful places. Commenting on her skiing today she remarks that she was faster when she was younger. Now she has two artificial hips and she can’t just charge across the ice and get away with it. Asking why she loves to race she told me: “I enjoy the people who have fun with the racing. It’s a great way of life and a healthy way to live. She really likes the races here in Golden, as she remarked: “You’ve got a good course, they’re beautiful trails. Asked to give advice to
ski racers who are new to the sport, she recommended: “Make sure you had a substantial meal, not a heavy greasy one, eat properly. You want to dress well too because you don’t want to be all sweaty before you get anywhere. Olwyn added: “When I was a small kid, my mother would say ‘it’s a great life if you don’t weaken and so you have to stay healthy and keep active. I was lucky to be born into an active, healthy family with good food and feel sorry for kids that don’t have that kind of upbringing. She figured that if you didn’t ski, you’d be utterly miserable and somewhat housebound. As Ringheim learned from young age to be independent on her skis, she still goes cross country skiing on her own regularly. “One day I got into trouble with Dan, my son, when I got home in the dark, she laughed. Now she has a headlamp so she can go night skiing. Ringheim sure knows how to live right. Whenever I hurt a little and feel old, I will think of my role model Olwyn Ringheim, feel inspired, get outside, be active, and enjoy life.
Welcome to Golden and the
2012 Masters Canadian Nordic Ski Championships
GOLDEN NORDIC SKI CLUB member and veteran of 6 Masters World Cups, Olwyn Ringheim (84) skied to a silver medal in the 10k free event in the 2011 Masters World Cup held in Vernon last March. Olwyn at 83 was the oldest female competitor at the World Masters. She will compete this year in the Golden Masters event.

Ten Things to Look Out for on the Dawn Mountain Trails 1.
2. 3.
4.
A Major Mixed Forest… The forest on the west bench of the upper Columbia River is a wild mix of Douglas Fir, Spruce, Hemlock, Cedar and many deciduous trees dominated by poplar and alder. Bear trees… Lots of the aspen trees along the trail have been climbed by bears over the years. You can tell by the bear claw scars. Don’t worry: they are hibernating! Cedar Totems… The unique old snags along many of the trails especially Chickadee are burnt cedar which have stood beautifully carved by the 1926 fire. This fire wiped out nearly all the west bench, ending a short history of logging the area for mostly fir and cedar. Hydrographical apex at Cougar Cub… As you ski Beaver Run, you cannot help but note the lovely ponds adjacent to the trail. Many Beaver Dams cross east to west and Beaver lodges are numerous. The interesting point is that this wetland complex drains both North and South into two separate drainages; north to Holt Creek (which goes through the golf course) and south to Cedar Creek (which
5.
6.
7.
goes through the Moonraker Bike trails). The height of land is a line of trees at the top of Cougar Cub trail! In the past floods have wiped out our trails! The Columbia River Lumber Company railbed… when you ski down to Raven Trail, you cross and ski along a flat section (yep, the only flat section!) which is the old railbed owned by the Columbia River Lumber Company. This operated from 1906 to 1926 and the trees were skidded to the rail line, hauled upstream (south!) to Nicholson and dropped into the river to float to Golden’s mill where the logs were dewatered and milled up. More heritage info at our Golden Museum! Water everywhere… Our recreation site is incredibly wet. We have 38 culverts and 4 bridges on the system. Moose are seen year round residing here. Floods blow out our culverts at times in the early summer freshet. Snowpack… Our Nordic trails receive enough snow every year to open for skiing from late November to late April. The combination of a north aspect, little wind, lighter snow,
valley cloud during many winter days and enough elevation above the valley keeps the snow conditions consistent most of the winter. Our waxing is usually pretty easy. 8. Summer wind event of 2000… when you ski Caribou Trail, note a very open area in the north part of the trail. This was due to a massive wind event in the summer, uprooting all the trees including huge fir. The tempest would have been intense. The downed trees were salvaged by our local logging company, Louisiana Pacific. 9. Dawn Mt. Chalet construction: we built this starting in 2010 and we are still finishing it. The shell is beetle killed pine (denim pine), the timber frame is fir, and we have in floor heating provided by a geothermal system. Due to the very wet ground, the building sits on 46 screw piles. We have an Ecoflow septic system which uses peat moss as a filter. 10. All our trails are designed for skiing! Unlike many systems, we were able to create this one with skiers in mind (skiers who like views, variety and hills!) Layout was done mostly in house, over a 10 year period.

Andre wins Major award from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net After his last season with the Golden Rockets ending earlier than he hoped Darren Andre picked up honours from not only the team but also the Eddie Mountain Division and the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). Andre was named the Most Sportsmanlike for both the division and overall for the league in a special ceremony before what turned out to be his last game in a Rockets jersey.
“It is an honour. It was truly unexpected but it felt really good. I feel extremely honoured to have been recognized by the league. There were a ton of players who deserved it. It means a lot to me, he said. Andre went on to say that he felt it says a lot for the game when a player like him can win this award. “I think in general it is a sign of the way the game is going now. A 20-year-old captain can win that. Ten or 20 years ago the last person that would ever win a Most Sportsmanlike award would be an older guy and a captain. It is a sign of the way things are changing
and that is good for the game. At an awards banquet this week both of his parents were on hand to share in not only the Sportsmanlike awards but also others he received from the Rockets. “That has been the best part about everything. To have them here with me tonight and win some awards mean a great deal to me. This has been awesome. Now that his career in the KIJHL is over Andre hopes to continue playing hockey at the university level where he plans to continue working on a science degree and working towards making it into medicine.

Alvin “Al” Trott, beloved husband of Joy Trott of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the age of 93 years. Peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a long life fully lived. Alvin was born at Delia but moved to Lacombe at an early age. Also siblings Ed (Eve) and Eleanor, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Walter and Selena, siblings Hazel and Ray, grandson Chad. Alvin was a true renaissance man, always curious and ready to philosophize. An avid reader he also authored two books. A lover of music, he played several instruments, took up painting, with impressive results. A lover of the outdoors Alvin was always up for a hike or a picnic or work at “bosky”, his beloved mountain retreat. He took to the computer in his 80s and was among the first in Canada to sign up for on-line access to his investments, at age 90! Nature’s Containers take centre stage at AGOG Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Using just the natural elements around us, local artist Dawna-Lee Ringer has created a series of containers and baskets that celebrate our natural and cultural history for her collection “Nature’s Containers. “The gallery showing is a combination of my year’s journey. It started with submitting a grant proposal to Columbia Basin Trust, said Ringer. Now that she had the means, she was really able to focus her energy of collecting materials, and turning them into art. “For this show you’ll see I think there’s about six different species that I used, so there’s cedar, there’s birch, cattails, there’s the gourds, spruce root, and the red osier willow, said Ringer. “We live in a great area, we have the wetlands, we have the adjacent mountains. And I was collecting the majority of my material from those areas. Hopefully when the visitor comes they can draw a connection with what they see out there in the natural world, and some of the things you can make with it. Ringer has information cards with all her pieces currently being shown at the Art Gallery of Golden.
“If somebody comes in to look at it, hopefully they can guide themselves through it, and feel like they’ve learned something as well, she said. Ringer has been doing baskets on and off for many years, on top of the various other forms of art she also explores. “I just get myself into everything. I do lots of workshops, I’ve been doing stuff for the Metis aboriginal youth, so we’ll make moccasins, we’ll do birch bark baskets, we’re going to do something with the gourds this year... so over the last four or five years I’ve been doing that with the schools, said Ringer. “For me it’s just always wanting to learn. I see something I like, and I have to try it. If I get really good at it, I’ll either continue it on, or it becomes an opportunity to teach. Ringer has been part of this community for more than 25 years, and has a small business with her photographer husband called One Sparrow Images. And through their website www.onesparrowimages.com you can view some of her other art. But it is the workshops she is hoping to expand on. “There’s this tendency for me to take what I learn and then share it. The workshops are really good for that. I get to share a lot with people and then watch them blossom, she

Steven Page set to come to Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Once again the Golden Civic Centre will be the site of a show by a Canadian music superstar when Steven Page comes to town on March 20. The former lead singer for the band Bare Naked Ladies (BNL) is heading out for a short West Coast tour performing with Craig Northey. “I met Craig and his band, Odds, back in 1993 when BNL were on the Gordon tour. We were playing in Vancouver and they invited us to come and watch them play down the street later that night. We became fast friends and had them on the road with us several times after that. “After I split from the band, Craig and I wrote a couple of songs together for my album Page One. He and I are very compatible writers and are mutual fans, so we thought this would be a fun adventure for us to embark on together,” Page said. Since he started performing as a solo act Page has experienced many interesting aspects as a performer and writer. “I really enjoy the fact that I have so many options available to me now: Sometimes I perform solo, sometimes as a duo (on this tour it’s with Craig Northey, on others it has been with Kevin Fox), and also with my six-piece band, which is a really fun and talented group of people,” said Page. “The biggest challenge was learning to do it myself without necessarily having partners to lean on, but also without others to have to please, either. The vision is mine alone, which is very liberating, but also a major change for me in how I plan out the flow of a show.” In January Page released a two-song digital EP called A Different Sort of Solitude. “I had written the title song for a film called French Immersion, and I came up with the title as a play on the Two Solitudes. Craig Northey and I wrote the other track, Manchild, and I was really excited about both songs. My wife, Christine, loved them
as well and kept telling me I had to let people hear them. Finally, we put them up on the music site Bandcamp and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Now, it’s up on iTunes, and on my site, and CBC and other radio outlets have been playing it. It’s a great feeling to know that people still like what I do.” As for preparing for the tour, Page explained that currently he does not do long tours like he has in the past. “I don’t do long tours as much as I used to, so there’s a certain amount of anxiety. I know they sell toothbrushes everywhere, so I don’t need to worry about forgetting that, but I do wonder what I’ve forgotten to pack,” Page said. “As well, I’m in a place where I’m very happy at home, so the prospect of three weeks away is a little daunting. The best part is the fact that I still love performing as much as I always have,” he said. As for this tour Page explained people will have the chance to hear a great mix of music. “It’s a two-man acoustic show, with a great mix of new songs and Barenaked Ladies songs that everyone will remember. We’ll also be singing a few of Craig’s songs.” Having his music used in a film is an area Page said is a process he likes to be involved with. “I do enjoy it a lot. Obviously, one hopes that the projects one works on will be huge hits and win lots of awards etc., and we’ve been lucky in the past with songs like the Big Bang Theory theme, and songs we’ve written for Disney films and others, but I also just enjoy the process of working with people from other disciplines,” he said. As for the future Page said, “I’d love to be writing more for film and theatre. It’s always been a dream of mine to write a musical, and that’s at the top of my list of things to do.” For more information about this or any of the other shows check out kickinghorseculture.ca or drop by the Art Gallery of Golden at 519, 9th Avenue North or call 250-344-6186.

Bizarre turns two years old Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net

One of Golden's quirkiest stores is about to enter its terrible twos. Bizarre Entertainment celebrated its second anniversary last week. The store that gives you a little bit of everything entertainment including video games, movies, books, music, board games and more, turned two on March 2. "Just getting through the first two years, any business person will tell you that's the challenging time. And that's when you know whether you're going to be able to do this as a career or not," said Trevor Hamre, the store's owner. "So it's way more relaxing now that we're two years in." As a politically active, and very social guy, Hamre is living his dream owning his own store and dealing with happy clientele who share many of his interests. "Overall, the people who come into my business are really stoked and happy. They're happy before they come in here, and they're looking to make themselves even happier through a movie or a video game or whatever. In general it's pretty easy to work with people who are happy," he said. Even though Bizarre Entertainment is a store that sells products, it is also a very social, community
oriented venue that gives people an opportunity to come together and enjoy a shared interest. "Look at our community. It's so focused towards physical activity. And anybody else that lives here can be a bit marginalized," said Hamre. "And the neatest thing is to see these marginalized people come together and meet each other, and actually start to hang out outside of the store." Four days a week there is an organized game session happening in the store, whether it's Dungeons and Dragons, Magic, or
other board games. Hamre or his staff will help guests learn how to play, which Hamre has noticed has helped some of the younger players with math and literacy skills. "I'm so stoked about the support locally. It's been really good... Parents are really excited that we're doing the game nights, that we're interacting with kids that aren't necessarily into hockey or skiing," said Hamre.
