It was a paint job worth holding a school assembly to see.

The Abbotsford Christian Knights high school drag racing team had an accident with their 1967 Barracuda last year, and the impact with the wall at Mission Raceway Park left them in need of some body work – a job beyond the

scope of their shop program.

The drag team survives and thrives on donations from the community. Brian Anderson, a father of Abby Christian students, originally gave the program the Notchback Barracuda which he had run as a supercharged alcohol drag car. It had a broken engine, and sat for two years. The shop kids rebuilt it, and started racing in 2001.

Then, last year’s mishap sidelined the drag machine.

Rick Francoeur of 360 Fabrication, an Abbotsford custom car builder, came to the ’Cuda’s rescue. He sponsored the car repairs, which included a bent frame, and had a custom paint job put on it that will make it the envy of the high school drag racing circuit.

Cedar Valley Manor is selling quickly and it is easy to see why.

The Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) has a new project on the go. After successfully developing and operating The Cedars, MASH is now developing Cedar Valley Manor, a life lease for independent seniors.

In a Life Lease the resident pays an upfront cost, or “entrance fee,” which is used to pay for the construction of the building, plus a monthly fee which includes general building upkeep and replacement reserves. Taxes are extra but life lease residents qualify for the Homeowner Grant. When people move out, they get 95% of their money back— with no worries about the real estate market and estate planning is so simple.

Life lease residents don’t have to worry about management concerns, or being part of a strata council—all of that is looked after by a trusted community-based non-profit organization. The cancellation of the tiered water rate system was great news to Bhupinder Singh Bansal.

The Abbotsford resident has been a vocal opponent of the system, calling it unfair to large families who use more water living normal daily lives.

Bansal has spoken to council, asking them to axe the tiered system in favour of a uniform rate.

He was in the audience on Monday when council did just that.

“It’s very good. They listened to us,” said Bansal.

Coun. John Smith led the charge for change, having argued against tiered rates from the beginning.

He called it unfair to force people to pay a higher rate per cubic metre (1,000 litres), based on consumption.

As part of his motion, Smith also asked staff to investigate a process that would bring the ICI (industrial, commercial and institutional) and agricultural water rates in line with residential. Currently, they pay less.

The ICI/Ag rate is 92 cents per cubic metre for the first 10,000. That rate drops to 85 cents for 10,000 to 100,000 and drops again, to 69 cents for anything over 100,000 cubic metres.

“I want to see if it’s possible to change that,” said Smith.

Stolen hiking gear Between $13,000 and $15,000 worth of specialty hiking gear was stolen from a U-Haul trailer in Abbotsford Monday morning.

The trailer was parked near the Best Western Plus Regency Inn and Conference Centre in the 32000 block of Marshall Road.

Const. Ian MacDonald said it was filled with Kenetrek brand items, including 50 pairs of hiking boots valued at about $250 each and 20 pairs of socks worth about $20 each.

MacDonald said the trailer had been driven from northern B.C. by a salesman or distributor, and the items were to be delivered to local retailers.

The thieves used a bolt cutter to break the lock on the U-Haul.

Anyone who comes across any Kenetrek items being sold, other than through businesses, is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department.

The residents of an Abbotsford mobile home park for seniors are worried that their days in their homes are numbered, and they may lose their investments.

Garden Village, which is located at 1881 McCallum Rd., near the Highway 1 overpass, is an oasis of calm in a busy city, where everybody knows their neighbour – and their dogs – by name.

All the gossip is about how much longer they have in their homes.

The residents, all 55 and over, have been told by their property manager that the company will take no longterm leases, and all tenancies are month to month. They have also been offered two years’ pad rent to leave.

However, they’ve not yet been told to pack up.

“We’re under a lot of stress, and we don’t know what the future holds,” said resident Myrtle Young.

She sold her condominium in Clearbrook Village and bought a trailer in which to retire. Last April, she obtained $16,000 under a government program to update her trailer.

Now she is concerned that if she is forced to leave within five years of the grant, the government will make her repay the funds – as per the

terms of the program.

“I never expected that I would have to move,” said the 70-year-old. “There are quite a few moved out already, but they got nothing for their trailers.”

In her case, a two-year buyout would be about $11,000.

That would just cover the cost to move the trailer, she said.

Residents of the park are also finding that they would be forced to move into the Interior if they want to keep their mobile homes.

M o s t parks in the Lower Mainland will not a c c e p t trailers older than 10 years.

Myrtle’s granddaughter, Crystal Young, points out that nobody is going to buy a trailer in a park that is not allowing long-term leases, and where they may only have two years or less. She fears her grandmother will lose $40,000 she has invested in her place at Garden Village, and notes that virtually all of the residents are on fixed income or low income – people who can least afford to take a financial hit late in life.

“She’s going to end up having to rent an apartment somewhere,” predicts Crystal.

Residents are willing to talk about the situation, but most prefer to remain anonymous.

The stories are similar, but the numbers change. One person spent $60,000 buying and renovating a double-wide five years ago; another spent $79,000 a year ago, and would receive only $12,000 to leave.

Some cities have bylaws that s t i p u l at e residents in their position must be compensated fair market value for their trailers, and Myrtle Young they would like to see that made a provincial statute.

The land is owned by Karen Matty, a high-profile Abbotsford developer who made headlines for her Brio high rise project, which is cur-

rently on hold.

With their trailers sitting on approximately 13 acres near the highway, and walking distance to both the historic downtown and the planned university district, the residents speculate there are bigger plans for the trailer park.

However, park manager Paul Hague said there has been no official announcement, nor is there a plan to develop the site.

He said due to the age and condition of the 55-year-old park, management is allowing no long-term leases, but is offering buy-outs.

“We just put the word out – if you want out, here’s an option.”

Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen has been contacted by several Garden Village residents asking for government help. His advice is to sit tight – none of them has been served notice yet.

Once they do, they have two years.

“It’s inevitable that this is going to be stressful for people,” he said. “They fully expected to live out their lives in this situation.

“I have all the sympathy in the world for the people living there.”

Slot question goes to public hearing

The public will get its say on more slot machines in the city.

Council agreed to hold a public hear-

ing on a request to increase the number of slots at Chances Community Gaming Centre on Peardonville Road.

Playtime Gaming,

which runs Chances, wants to expand from 125 machines to as many as 300.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation would control the rate of

expansion, likely adding 50 machines at a time, based on demand. The floor space at Chances limits the total allowable units to 300.

Currently, there is a city-imposed covenant limiting the number to 125.

council could cap the amount of slot machines to less than 300, but was told staff would have to investigate his question further with the B.C. Lottery Corporation.

Bill MacGre gor proposed deferring the public hearing until that question was answered, but other councillors did not agree.

“I would prefer that we just move this forward to a public hearing and get the ball rolling and get the answers to those questions in the meantime,” said Coun. Patricia Ross.

Simon Gibson has been against the expansion from the beginning and reiterated his objections to the proposal.

“Of course, BC Lotteries would like to max out as many slot machines as they could possibly get in there. I mean, it’s revenue for them. So let’s not be surprised if they don’t want this council to have any control,” said Gibson.

No date has been set for a public hearing.

This is the second time in two months that the slot expansion issue has been in front of council.

At the end of January, council denied the request, but Mayor Bruce Banman used his prerogative and brought the issue back for reconsideration.

‘Amazing to watch’ From A1

Shop teacher Gary Verbeek rolled it out of the trailer at Friday mor ning’s school assembly on the front grounds, with the Barracuda’s namesake song by Heart blaring to an appreciative school.

“I love it, I’ve never seen anything like it – especially in the high school division,” said Schey Notenbomer, a Grade 12 student who will drive the ’Cuda this season.

“We’re pretty excited to see what this car will do this year.”

It’ll do 110 mph, which is the maximum allowed in the high school division.

It has been to nationals in 2002, 2004, 2006 and in 2010. Under the hood is a 440 big block Chrysler motor – reined in by a throttle-stopped two-barrel carburetor, so that it doesn’t run quicker than 12 seconds in the quarter-mile.

The new look is the work of Nicholas Boos of Total Control Artworks, who does custom painting with 360 Fabrication. Verbeek explained that Boos painted the car in the Abby Christian shop, where students could learn about his craft.

“The process of him doing it was amazing to watch,” said Verbeek. “And he was great – he talked to the kids, and he kind of got hooked on it. The result is what you see.”

The car features a knight on a charger along the doors, painted in moody blues, with the name “Knight Racing.”

Verbeek said it will be the best-looking car at the raceway – not just on the high school circuit.

Verbeek’s program gives back to the community too.

Concocted strife

Like sharks attracted to blood in the water, a number of B.C.’s union bosses are now rushing in to join the B.C. Teachers’ Federation in its militant fight with the Liberal government.

The B.C. Federation of Labour and the Canadian Union of Public Employees have announced they’re joining the protest over Bill 22, the legislation that will block further teachers’ strike action and impose a cooling-off period.

The union rhetoric is the standard fare, with the Liberals accused of being confrontational and undemocratic.

The BCTF has been at the table with the government for nearly a year.

It put forth utterly unrealistic wage demands, which overpower solutions to gain in other areas that truly do have something to do with education, such as addressing special needs in classrooms.

The BCTF and its brethern can

lecture as much as they like about free collective bargaining. The fact of the matter is that the teachers’ union hasn’t seen the process work in a functional manner since the mid-’90s, while many others have, many times.

Given that history, the piling on now by the BC Fed and CUPE is disengenuous.

Bill 22 is not a threat directed at other public sector unions. It’s aimed at getting teachers back into the classrooms, where they need to be.

The escalating disruption in schools had to be dealt with.

Using that as an excuse, however, other public sector unions are now making ominous noises, hoping to leverage the government (taxpayers) to weaken, and agree to wage and/or benefit demands above the net zero rightfully set last year.

This is the last thing the province needs in a time of a seriously challenged economy – concocted, widespread labour strife.

My View So the premiers and the prime minister are once again haggling over the cost of Canadian public health care with some people talking about how the current universal model is not sustainable.

We need to tighten budgets, we are told, because the current spending on care for the sick and elderly is not sustainable.

The talk is about money and budget bottom lines and the demographic challenge of an aging population.

These are all nice, bloodless terms that avoid the visceral reality for people already struggling with the de facto rationing of health care.

Like the 92-year-old man I met during a recent hospital stay.

We were sharing a ward in Richmond Hospital following our respective surgeries.

Mine was an elective procedure that I’d had two years to prepare for.

He had fallen and shattered his hip.

A surgical team had repaired the damage, and the next step was going to be learning to walk again.

It was his second broken hip, so he knew what he was in for.

Sometimes, he would cough and make the pain even worse, then swear at it, then apologize for his mild profanity.

The hurt and the prospect of more to come made him impatient and irritable about the ghastly hospital food and the sometimes slow response when he would pull the cord attached to the call button.

On occasion, he would get snappish with the nurses on the surgical ward, then apologize and tell them that he understood they were understaffed and overworked.

When he was feeling better, he would flirt with them in the respectful, gentle way of an older generation.

He was waiting to be moved to another fl oor of the hospital with the needed physiotherapy equipment, but a bed hadn’t opened up yet.

To distract himself from the pain, he

would occasionally sing to himself in a pitch-perfect high baritone that sounded uncannily like Burl Ives.

He’d been there for more than two weeks when two nurses, women young enough to be his granddaughters, dropped by for a pre-move assessment.

These are all nice, bloodless terms that avoid the visceral reality He’d been having a rough day.

The pain meds didn’t seem to be working and he was tired from the resulting lack of sleep.

He still hadn’t been able to walk.

That’s okay, they said.

They just wanted to see if he could stand up.

He wasn’t sure he could.

But they charmed him into it, helped him sit up in his bed and swing his legs to the side.

One on his left, the other on his right,

they helped him get on his feet As he stood swaying slightly, he couldn’t help remarking that one of them had the most beautiful brown eyes.

“Take a step,” she suggested.

“Just one.”

He hesitated.

“It’s okay,” she said. “We’re right here.”

“Just take one,” the other young woman said.

So he did.

A slow, uncertain shuffle forward.

“You did it.

Then another. And another.

He made about eight steps before he had to sit down.

“You tricked me,” he said.

He looked pleased.

That moment, I would suggest, deserves as much taxpayer-funded support as a toll bridge, fighter jet or football stadium.

Maybe even more.

Our city fathers are so proud of themselves, holding the tax increase to 1.66 per cent. Had they gone just a bit more, 1.72 per cent, we could have five new firefighters.

They thought we don’t need them. Well, I think most folks in Abbotsford will tell them what we don’t need is a hockey team and arena that are bleeding us dry for several millions of dollars each and every year.

Pull the plug on the Heat. If they cannot make it on their own, it is certainly not up to the taxpayer to sub-

sidize them, and their wealthy owners.

Abby spikers celebrate national titles Trinity Western Spartans setter Ben Ball didn’t emerge from his hotel room until just 90 minutes before his team’s CIS national men’s volleyball semifinal on Saturday.

Immediately following his team’s quarterfinal victory over Dalhousie the night before, Ball had rushed back to the Spartans’ hotel. He spent all night vomiting and all day in bed.

To make matters worse, his backup Devyn Plett was also sick and sharing a hotel room with Ball.

Ball, one of three graduating seniors on the team, was a “little bit worried” this was how he would spend his final days in a Spartan uniform.

The Residential Construction Performance Guide is the newest online resource available on the provincial Homeowner Protection Office website at www.hpo.bc.ca. It explains how homes covered by home warranty insurance should perform.

Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance.

It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada.

“For most consumers, buying a new home is one of the largest financial investments they will make. So it’s essential that homebuyers can make that investment with confidence, knowing that they will not be faced with additional expenses to repair defects after they move in,” said Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Home Owners’ Association and an advocate for consumer protection.

This simple, practical guide is easy to use. It outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled.

Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, wood-frame homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings. Builders can also use the guide to help ensure that they deliver high performance homes.

Marshall was named a tournament all-star at nationals.

GOLDEN GIRLS Abbotsford’s volleyball community was also well-represented on the women’s side, as Brina DerksenBergen and Rosie Schlagintweit helped the UBC Thunderbirds win their fifth consecutive CIS crown.

The Thunderbirds came into nationals as the No. 2 seed, after falling to the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West final. They met Alberta once again with national gold on the line, and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five sets.

Predeceased by his mother, Annie Davies (1985) and father William (Bill) Davies (1983), he is survived by numerous relatives and friends. A graveside service will be held at Hatzic Cemetery, 34867 Cemetery Road, Mission, on Thursday, March 15th, 2012 at 1:00 pm, with a memorial service following at 2:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission, BC. After graduating from U.B.C., Don travelled in Europe and pursued an acting career in London, eventually returning in 1964 to teach French and drama at Mission Senior Secondary. In his retirement in 1984, he enjoyed reading widely, raising his dog Bear, and entertaining his friends. We remember Don’s wealth of knowledge, his curiosity, his wry sense of his humour and his generosity, and we are grateful for his friendship.
