Raising the Barr high on retirement Recreation since 2004, is replacing her. Barr leaves the office for the last time on Friday, but her time working with seniors will never leave her. “I’ll miss working with seniors and volunteers,” Barr said. “When you enjoy doing what you do it defines who you are.” Barr was born in Nanaimo and moved to Port Alberni at age six. “I consider myself an Albernian,” she said. Barr went to Hilton School, Alberni Elementary, Klitsa School and Alberni District Secondary School, where she graduated in 1975. She originally wanted to be a school teacher but her guidance counsellor suggested that she may be good at recreation. Barr first worked as a playground leader in 1974 — one of 15 playground leaders

Port Alberni Parks and Recreation programmer Deb Barr, who works mostly with seniors, is now becoming a retiree herself. She’s retiring after more than 30 years on the job.

A Parks and Recreation employee who has been a fixture with retirees has now become one herself. Deb Barr is retiring from Port Alberni Parks and Recreation after 35 years as recreation programmer. “It’s going to be a challenge leaving and moving on to the next phase of my life,” the always polite and soft-spoken Barr said. “This wasn’t just a job — it was my passion.” Barr has puttered around in her office in the last few weeks, slowly emptying it of items and memories she’s collected over the past three decades. Karen Freethy, who has worked in a different capacity with Parks and

in the community at that time, and was originally hired by then co-ordinator Theresa Kingston. Their two careers have remained intertwined until now: Kingston as the city’s human resource manager and Barr as recreation programmer. Barr eventually became the playground co-ordinator then in 1977 worked as a receptionist at Echo Centre. In 1979, Barr became the Parks and Recreation senior citizens program leader, and so began her three-decade labour of love with the Sunshine Club. Truth be known though, her reverence for seniors was foreshadowed at an early age. “I used to visit seniors when I was a little girl and I enjoyed spending time

with them, helping them,” Barr said. No real moment stands out in the 30-plus years Barr has worked with seniors. The best part of her job, she says, is just that — working with seniors. But the hardest part is when they pass on. “I’ve met good people over the years and so many of them are no longer here,” Barr said. “When you work with them for eight hours a day they become part of your life.” Barr spoke little of what led to her decision to retire from a job she started in her 20s. But she hints at coming full circle in life in a recent Sunshine Club newsletter. “It’s now time to give someone else the opportunity to have a rewarding and fulfilling career as I have had.” Continued / 7

Survivors reconcile residential school past WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be in Port Alberni next week gathering testimony from residential school survivors and their families. Commission officials will be listening to testimony at the Maht Mahs gym on the Tseshaht reserve on March 12–13.

Fred said he looks forward to attending the TRC proceedings in Alberni but for different reasons. “I told my story over and over again in court from the witness stand for so many years,” Fred said. “So do I want to do it again — no, I don’t.” Fred said he wants to listen to stories to find out how people are dealing with the definition and practice of

reconciliation. The residential school legacy left many different kinds of victims in its wake including staff, former students, and students who also worked for the schools. “They knew what was going on and need to come to some kind of reconciliation too,” Fred said. The federal government may have made an apology but a lot more healing needs to take place,

Fred said. “Look at the poverty, addiction, and dysfunction on a reserve and it’s obvious there’s a lot of healing work to be done yet,” Fred said. “I’ve watched so many people I went to school with die, and a majority of them from violent deaths.” Ray Guno, a Nisga’a from New Aiyansh who lives in Vancouver, will try and make it to the proceedings, he said. He attended AIRS from 1961–1964.

“That impact of it is intergenerational and will take years before it works its way out of us,” Guno said. “It was the most perverted thing a government could ever have done to its own people.” A voice needs to be given to those who didn’t live to tell their stories. “A lot of people went to early graves because of that place,” Guno said. A final report will be released in 2014.

Passion for puddle ducks MARINERS: | David Whitworth wants to see unique boats on the water. SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

SONJA DRINKWATER/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

David Whitworth puts his prototype puddle duck racer through a seaworthiness test in the Alberni Inlet (it passed).

When David Whitworth retired, he turned to boat building to keep himself occupied. Now, Whitworth is sharing his passion for boats in what he hopes will turn into an annual event for Port Alberni. Four years ago Whitworth attended an eight-month boatbuilding program on Gabriola Island. Last month he built boat No. 5 as an experiment, and launched it behind Port Boathouse. “It sailed so well in hardly any wind,” he said. Last summer Whitworth was fascinated with the Mobile Optimist Sailing School boats that launched from Wild West Watersports. He found something called a puddle duck racer that reminded him of the boats. A puddle duck racer is a four-foot-by-eightfoot plywood boat that can be assembled by

A plan began percolating to hold a “Hatch”, with families and groups building and racing the boats. “I want to do something that will enhance the recreational use of the waterfront,” Whitworth said. A sailpast and puddle duck race have been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 at Harbour Quay, to coincide with the city’s centennial

Students walk out WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Between 60-80 Alberni District Secondary School students walked out of school an hour early last Friday in a show of solidarity to striking School District 70 teachers. With the sound of Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are A Changing echoing from a boom box in the background, students left school at noon, an hour and a half before their school day was scheduled to end. They walked along 11th Avenue carrying placards reading This Is Our Future, I Support Teachers, Negotiate Don’t Legislate and Who Cares About Us. B.C. teachers served strike notice Thursday morning after a provincewide vote in favour of escalating job

action. The move came two days after the provincial government tabled legislation forcing teachers back to regular classroom duties. The high school students marched along 11th Avenue to the new high school on Roger Street then down Roger Street to the school board

office, where they stood chanting for a half hour before being told by an official inside that the police were being called. Don’t underestimate how much students understand about the issue, or how much a small-town protest can mean, organizer Jenna Comeau said. “I’m happy with the turnout, it’s about as

much as we expected and it was civil, Comeau said. “Just because we’re doing this in a small town doesn’t mean it can’t make a difference. Comeau said she and others got the idea from Facebook earlier this week after seeing students in Vancouver planning a protest. “We thought ‘why not do it here’ and it just escalated, Comeau said. “We want our teachers to know they’re not alone. Larger class sizes under new legislation concerns Grade 11 student Colin Simister. “There’s already 28 to 30 students in some classes and with more there’s no way teachers can possibly get to help all of us, he said. “I’m prepared to accept any consequences for what I’m doing today too. Continued / 6

Teachers back on job WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It was back to classes for Port Alberni teachers on Thursday but what’s in store next week and thereafter isn’t known yet, Alberni District Teachers Union president Ken Zydyk said. More than 50 teachers from Port Alberni joined approximately 8,000 others for a rally at the B.C. Legislature building in Victoria on Tuesday. “We were unified and together and it was a successful event, Zydyk said. “We’ve sounded the alarm about the far reaching effects of Bill 22. A contingent of teachers also stayed in Alberni to man information lines outside of schools. Things were consistent throughout

the three-day strike, Zydyk said. “We’re receiving a lot of support from the public. Members of the Hospital Employees Union joined teachers on their information line in a show of solidarity, Zydyk added. “Bill 22 isn’t just an action against teachers, it’s an action against all workers. Local unions participated in a rally at the Steelworkers Hall on Montrose Street on Wednesday. Wages remain an issue at the provincial bargaining table, but aren’t as onerous as is being made out, Zydyk said. “A cost of living increase is important in the Lower Mainland, which has just been named one of the most expensive places to live, he said. Alberni teachers didn’t walk off the job because of wages,

he said. “It’s because of the damage the legislation has on classrooms and learning conditions. Wednesday represented the last day of strike action teachers were entitled to under last week’s Labour Relations Board ruling. They are entitled to withdraw services for one day per week starting next week. But the options are still being considered in that regard. “We’re returning to work on Thursday and Friday, that’s the current plan, Zydyk said. Teachers haven’t decided yet what day of the week next week they’ll be walking out. The LRB ruling requires them to give 48 hours’ notice. “Things are changing by the hour and I don’t want to say something that’s still not the case.

Students back Family Easter Bunny Express adds second session teachers’ action

From / 4 Watching government deny teachers a basic right is disturbing, and is what prompted Grade 12 student Connor McDonald to participate in the protest. “We think it’s unfair for it to be made illegal to strike,” McDonald said. “What’s the point in having that right if it’s just going to be

taken away — that’s not a right, that’s a privilege.” Police vehicles unobtrusively followed the protest and cordoned off traffic at 12th Avenue and Redford Street to allow students to pass. There was only one incident that involved the driver of a pickup truck who swore out his window at the students. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

New Residential Construction Guide Benefits Homeowners and Builders Homeowners have a new tool at their fingertipss to help them better understand how warranty providers evaluate claims for possible design, labour or material defects in new homes. The Residential Construction Performance Guide is the newest online resource available on the provincial Homeowner Protection Office website at www.hpo.bc.ca. It explains how homes covered by home warranty insurance should perform. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. “For most consumers, buying a new home is one of the largest financial investments they will make. So it’s essential that homebuyers can make that investment with confidence, knowing that they will not be faced with additional expenses to repair defects after they move in,” said Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Home Owners’ Association and an advocate for consumer protection. This simple, practical guide is easy to use. It outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled. Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, wood-frame homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings. Builders can also use the guide to help ensure that they deliver high performance homes.

End of an era as Mort’s Video closes WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It’s the end of an era as the Alberni Valley’s first video store is closing its doors for good. Mort’s Video, which has rented DVD and VHS movies since 1978, ceased operating on Feb. 29. The shuttering brings to an end the business’s legacy as the oldest one-owner video store on Vancouver Island. When owner Frank Mortensen, 59, closes the door of his now empty Adelaide Street shop and turns the key to lock it for the last time it will be with mixed feelings. “I love this business and I love the customers; it’s been a great run,” Mortensen said. “But the writing has been on the wall for a couple of years

now and it’s time.” Mortensen said he has been planning the closure since 2010. A series of long-running circumstances foreshadowed the store’s eventual demise. Movies can now be rented directly from cable companies at home. The store was no longer the only game in town. And big box stores cut into the video sales stream. “In the end it was costing me money to run the business,” he said. The investment of time into the lagging business was causing a debit in his personal life. “I’ve got a grandson now and I didn’t have time for him like I should have,” he said. Mort’s rented videos, sold VHS format movies, and still repaired

televisions from time to time. But it never climbed aboard the video game rental market. “I believe in sticking with one thing and doing it well and we did,” Mortensen said. “I don’t know anything about video games.” Mortensen’s father Ralph, 80, started Mort’s television repair business in 1960, and first operated it out of his Elizabeth Street home. Later, the business opened a television repair storefront, then in 1978 expanded to include VCR and video sales. “Once, we sold more than 200 VCRs in one year,” Mortensen said. “When we got into video sales it became a good way to sell VCRs.” The operation was literally a family business. “My dad,

Big box stores sold televisions cheaper than it cost to repair them, and rising licensing fees and taxes combined to sweep away mom and pop repair operations.

JUNE KASPERSKI WILD SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Despite the gray, winter, weather in Port Alberni these days, the sun is always shining in GT Vintage Parlour on Argyle Street. This is due, in no small part, to the owner and designer, Sarah Williams. Williams’ wares are colourful and edgy, and not unlike the winter, the store projects a feeling of delightful and exciting things to come. Williams is a local girl, born and raised in Port Alberni. She returned from a 10-year retail management and fashion buying career in Vancouver when Gramma’s Trunk went up for sale two and a half years ago. “Gramma’s Trunk was my favourite store when I was growing up here,” says Williams. “When I saw that it was up for sale, I jumped at the chance to move back to my hometown and start a business of my own.” The “GT” in GT Vintage Parlour is a tribute to Gramma’s Trunk, but the merchandise has changed since the Gramma’s Trunk days. “I continue to sell, the vintage treasures of Gramma’s Trunk, but have added vintage and vintage-look fashion accessories, some

more ‘eclectic’ treasures, as well as accessories that I have designed and created myself.” Williams’ designs centre around fashion accessories, and, in particular, hair bands, fascinators (think royal wedding headpieces) and hair clips. Her accessories are all handmade and they are garnering attention in the Vancouver fashion world. Williams’ accessories will be featured in the next edition of Wedding Bells magazine, and she is currently filming a guest spot on The Wedding Belles, a cable television show in Vancouver. The magazine and television show features Williams’ more extravagant headpieces and couture items. Despite her offIsland popularity, Williams is determined to stay put in Port Alberni. “I’ve been speaking to the city about leasing space at Harbour Quay,” says Williams. “I hand-delivered a letter to city hall last December and left some samples of my work for everyone to see. “I am hopeful that I can convince city officials to open one of two units in Harbour Quay that are currently being used as storage for the Farmer’s Market. “If you are going

to go anywhere in Port Alberni to get the tourist market, Harbour Quay is the place to be,” Williams says. “We need to make sure that retail space is being used for retail space.” In addition to pursuing a move to a more prominent location for her product, Williams is considering a merger with another local

business. This merger, if it is successful, would mean one-stop shopping for those looking for upscale clothing to match with Williams’ accessory line. “If negotiations with the landlord go well, you can expect to see a re-vamp of my downtown business in the very near future,” she says.

Strike remedy no big surprise BCTF is indoctrinating our children Nobody seems to be overly surprised that the provincial government has decided to use legislation to end yet another contract negotiation with B.C.’s teachers. Historically, when it comes to contract negotiations, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the Liberal government have gotten along like milk and vinegar, with contract negotiations ending in legislation. This time, however, the Liberals appear to have found a political opportunity in the current teachers’ job action. Premier Christy Clark, who is slumping in the polls, says she will not seek more taxpayer dollars to pay government workers. The BCTF, however, is quick to note that MLAs currently make about $102,000, on which they receive an annual percentage increase based on the consumer price index. Education Minister George Abbott says he is concerned for the vulnerable children who have been negatively impacted by the teachers’ job action. While this concern may be sincere, it certainly seems selective. British Columbia has the worst childpoverty rate in the country, and the new provincial budget, recently announced by Finance Minister Kevin Falcon, does nothing to address this. Nor will it help parents struggling with the cost of day care, or post-secondary students saddled with loans. Meanwhile, the cost of living continues to skyrocket, but Falcon will not consider raising the corporate tax until 2014 – after the election. No, it’s no surprise the Liberal government is pushing a legislated contract on the teachers. It’s just business as usual. – Salmon Arm Observer

ICTORIA – Perhaps the single most ridiculous stunt in the lead-up to this week’s teachers’ strike was pulled at an elementary school here in the capital. A teacher gave her Grade 1 class an assignment for antibullying day: take crayons in hand and write to Education Minister George Abbott, demanding he stop bullying their teacher and address class size and composition. This North Korea-style political indoctrination of six-year-olds was a mistake, according to the local teachers’ union boss, who vaguely indicated that the unnamed teacher would apologize to parents. Is this self-serving abuse of teacher authority an isolated incident? My experience as a parent and journalist suggests

it is not, and recent events support that. By Friday, students across B.C. were skipping class in solidarity with their teachers, led by budding campus radicals suddenly conversant with B.C. Teachers’ Federation talking points about “Bill 22.” This left-wing groupthink pervades the education system from public schools through taxpayersupported colleges and universities. After a couple of generations of this indoctrination, almost everyone “knows” that government underfunding is at the heart of every school problem, standardized testing is an assault on the fragile selfesteem of students, and reducing class size is the top priority for improving educational outcomes. All of this is glaringly false union propaganda, reinforced in classroom

“current affairs” discussions. Don’t believe me? Google “Study: Class size doesn’t matter” for the latest on a growing stack of scientific evidence that shows you and your children are being force-fed lies. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert announced the strike on live TV with a remarkable string of rhetoric about the “Orwellian” legislation that will soon put an end to this teacher tantrum. The government needs to negotiate “clearly, rationally and respectfully,” said the boss of union representatives who have spent the last year insulting the taxpayers’ negotiators by telling them to “go back to your masters” and get a couple of billion more. Clearly? It was the BCTF that announced its workto-rule plan for the fall and then took the summer

off. It was the BCTF that didn’t even present its outrageous 16-percent wage demand until January, a full 10 months after formal negotiations began, and accompanied it with a false costing. Orwellian? At a sparsely attended rally on the legislature lawn, local teachers’ unions marched out their most strident tame trustee to demand the government “come to the table” with billions. One teacher in the crowd held up a large sign adorned with three mug shots: Premier Christy Clark, ex-premier Gordon Campbell and Benito Mussolini, to illustrate a multiple-choice question about “fascism.” This teacher should be assigned to write an essay about the Italian dictator’s formative years, and his schooling in particular. In Vancouver, a protesting teacher got big media play, holding up a sign proclaiming that “it’s not about a wage increase, it’s about classroom conditions.” This too is a lie. Continued / 11

Leave our kids out of conflict From / 10 The BCTF trotted out its standard “children first” rhetoric, then tabled its breathtakingly out-of-touch benefit demands. It doesn’t take a math teacher to see what its $2 billion wage and benefit fantasy would actually do to classroom conditions. For his part, Abbott started out pretty keen about students and parents heading down to occupy their local school and replace striking teachers with volunteers for

11

a couple of days. But he changed his tune after the support staff union started grumbling about parents colouring too close to their craft lines. One fight at a time, I guess. The next one will be over teacher performance assessment and the choke-hold of union seniority on school jobs. To the Editor, Re: Not a sign of the times, editorial, March 2. When you are in a position where some people may read your words, care must be taken not to alienate your readership. That is what you have done with your casual indifference and dismissal of the South Port area. South Port has a great collection of very unique stores, run by retailers who are some of the most determined, vibrant people in Port Alberni. They work very hard to ensure their business’ success. South Port is historic, authentic and original, just as Gastown, Granville Island and False Creek would have been before they were revitalized. Yes, there are empty buildings and there is room for beautification. When that happens the existing business owners will probably dance in the streets. But for now, we are all committed to providing quality goods and great service to all who come in our door.

But, we need better signage on the incoming roads to direct tourists to our area. We need signage that will mean something to tourists. “City Centre” has no meaning – it’s too vague. Only locals understand that “Harbour Quay” has shops and restaurants. Having good signage for South Port to attract more travellers will be good for all of Port Alberni. Tourists may think that this area needs improvement, but they will also think that we are wonderfully authentic – like Barkerville. It’s time to stop hiding this part of Port Alberni. This is where the history is, where great little shops are—and we want to be supported and seen. Your business is wholly dependent on advertising revenue. How do you think other businesses can succeed without appropriate marketing and exposure? Jennie O’Connor, Let’s Knit!, Port Alberni (Editor’s note: Our editorial called for a delay in a decision about signs until a larger plan for Uptown

is developed. It was not a dismissal of South Port businesses.)

Smart meters affect health To the Editor, The evidence is overwhelming in the case against smart meters and the accumulated effects of Wi-Fi. Thanks to Mayor John Douglas and Coun. Wendy Kerr for their support of the smart meter moratorium. Other members say there is nothing we can do, or we can’t tell a company how to run their business. There is and we can. According to Bill 23-2008 of the British Columbia Public Health Act, section 83 (1), a municipality must take action when it learns of something that could be harmful to its residents. On Jan. 23, two well documented presentations were given to council. Background materials by qualified independent researchers were made available. The World Health Organization classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EFL), as emitted by wireless meters, as

a Class 2B possible human carcinogen. Also in this category are DDT, dioxin and lead. These non-CSA approved meters, installed by nonelectricians, which were exempt from standard BC Utilities review, have allegedly caused fires, appliance damage, health problems and more commonly, substantial bill increases. Thirty-four municipalities in B.C. have passed a moratorium on smart meters. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has requested an immediate moratorium on wireless smart meters installation based on scientific assessment of current medical literature. The Union of BC Municipalities put forward a similar motion in 2011. Children are particularly at risk for altered brain development, and ELF’s can have the same effect on people as toxic chemicals. The tobacco science guidelines used by BC Hydro are antiquated and skewed in their favor. They need

to consider all the medical literature available. Our community charter and charter of rights and freedoms are being violated by this system. Council must reconsider and pass a moratorium. It is irresponsible not to. A. McIvor, Port Alberni

Goodbye, green spaces

To the Editor, The assault on our city green spaces continues at city hall. Why various city councils favour the destruction of public areas for sports and recreation in favour of totally inappropriate concrete structures is beyond me. First there was the unnecessary, costly new high school. Now council has approved a project which will encroach on the existing parking lot off Beaver Creek Road and much of Sterling Field. The location is totally inappropriate. It doesn’t seem to matter who is on city council, the lack of proper planning and concern for the public interest continues. Richard Berg, Port Alberni

A young girl with leukemia needed a blood transfusion. The family and doctor told her little brother that his blood would be the best for her to help her live. It took him a while but with a tear in his eye he agreed to do it. As the blood transfusion progressed, the little boy looked up at his parents and said, “When do I die?” At that moment they all realized the sacrifice that he thought he was making. He thought he was giving all his blood and his life so his sister could live. Only as she got older did his sister really understand the meaning of what her brother was willing to do for her. “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Only as we meditate on the sacrifice of Jesus do we begin to really understand the meaning of what He was willing to do for us. Sharing the joy of photography NORMAN SILVERSTONE

H MELISSA MARTIN/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Photographer Norman Silverstone assists students at Eighth Avenue Elementary in taking each others’ portraits during Art in the Schools.

ello, loyal readers. Yes, I actually met another person that reads my newspaper column. My goodness, that makes four now. At the beginning of February, I was part of “Art in the Schools” at Eighth Avenue Elementary School. I was tasked with determining how to

get the photographic message across to grade school children? I thought I could set up a professional studio on the stage, set up my camera on a sturdy tripod with a cable release and have the kids take turn being the photographer and the model. So that is what I did. Unrolling a 15-by-30-foot black cotton backdrop that would become my shadowless, nondescript background, I then taped it to the

Congratulations!

floor using “Gorilla Tape”. Setting up the lights, I decided to use a “softbox” at the camera for the main light and a photographic umbrella for the fill light. It took a while to unravel the mess of material that was the softbox, put in the spines, the bracket for the White Lightning and fasten it to the beast of a flash unit. I looked at my watch—big mistake, as there were only 20 minutes left to countdown. I moved into rapid gear and set up the fill umbrella to the left but halfway between the camera

and the subject. Now it was time to test the lights and work out the ratio. I sat on the subject’s stool, plugged the softbox flash unit into my flash meter, pointed the unit at the camera and fired the flash. The flash meter said f22….no way, too much depth, the image would be in focus all the way to Mexico. I adjusted the angle of the softbox so that it was high and pointing down at a 45-degree angle towards the subject. I cranked down the strobe power until my flash meter read f8. Continued / 19

Kids get into picturetaking From / 14 Back to the stool with the umbrella flash unit plugged in this time and the flash unit set at ¼-power. Bingo! I get f5.6 on the flash meter, exactly what I want: one stop between the main unit and the fill unit means that the fill will not overpower the main flash, but just nicely fill in those deep shadows and give me a nice f8 with both flashes firing. I called fellow photographer Gittan Klemetsrud over to sit on the stool so I could test out the lights for strength, quality of light, coverage, ratio. She sat on the stool and looked pretty as only Gittan can. I fired off a few shots to check on the flash recycle times. Hmm, immediate. The light was perfect: soft, enveloping, natural colour and good shadow detail. I had time to have a sip of coffee, then looked up and saw herds of children heading my way. I turned on the flash units, explained that they must be in groups of two, one as the subject, one as the photographer, then they switch. They were allowed to shoot three photos each, with the “photographer” deciding on the pose and angle of the subject. The kids had the time of their life, and so did I. A week later I delivered the DVD to Melissa Martin, arts administrator at the Rollins Art Centre and organizer of the Art in Schools event. I hope that each child received her/his photos. Children’s tales around centennial ‘hidden’ in memoirs MEG SCOFFIELD SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Children are strangely absent from most history books. To find out about their lives we have to delve into memoirs and fiction, as well as old photographs. Those of us who heard hand-me-down stories from parents and grandparents were the lucky ones. Certain games and rituals came to Canada with different immigrant groups. Many had their origins in folklore. In this, our Port Alberni Centennial year, let’s take a look at some of the games children enjoyed back in the early days of the settlement. Would it surprise you to learn that some games have survived, with a few changes, right into the present century? Many children’s activities had their

time and place, especially in the school yard. There was a season for marbles, another for skipping games. Hopscotch had many variations. Children had to be inventive, to improvise with what was at hand. Pebbles, shells, sticks, homemade tops, kites and hoops were popular playthings. I remember my mother (born in 1899) talking about a game of jacks, played with knuckle bones, and her doll made from an old stocking. Children’s lives were often tightly controlled, and play was one of the ways they could reverse or challenge the rules imposed on them. Play time was often

training, or modeling, for adult roles: shopkeeper, doctor, nurse, policeman. Of course, chores always came first. Community picnics usually featured a tugo-war, games with bats and balls, swimming, jumping, and various kinds of foot races. Sack races, egg and spoon races and threelegged races were popular variations, with the winners usually rewarded with a ribbon. Sproat Lake was, of course, a very popular site for these gatherings. School sports days were highlights of the year. In the early days, school concerts and dances brought the entire community together to enjoy these special occasions. Alberni Airborne’s Natalia Dryburgh, No. 5, waits to return a ball during a game against Nanaimo on Sunday at the Alberni Athletic Hall.

The Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club didn’t place high in their home tourney standings but they placed first in heart and effort, first-year coach Lindsay Devine said. The Airborne hosted a 13-team play day at AW Neill Middle School and the Alberni Athletic Hall last Sunday. Teams came from Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo and Victoria. The U15 Airborne placed third out of six teams and the U 14 club placed sixth out of seven teams. The girls really came together as a team and stuck with the system...’ – Lindsay Devine come. “The girls really came together as a team and stuck with the system we’re trying,” Devine said. “And I saw an improvement in the team’s serving.” There are 12 girls on the U15 team and nine girls on the U14 squad. The girls come from both AW Neill and EJ Dunn middle schools. But the groundwork they are laying will serve them well once they get to the high school, Devine said. AW Neill principal Julie Anderson and

teacher Jelena Dyer have been building the volleyball program from the ground up for the last three years. The sport may not receive the attention that basketball does, but there are similarities. Girls basketball languished for two decades before teacher Laurie Hudson started a community development league, the players of which eventually benefited the high school. The results five years later are two appearances at the AAA Island Championships. The plan with volleyball is to begin establishing a program at the middle school level. “That’s where club teams really start building skills and game strategy,” Devine said.

Kim Churchill returns to Vancouver Island with a performance at Char’s Landing on March 9, 7 p.m.

Churchill, Spiller unite on musical stage With a new album about to be released, Australian singer / songwriter Kim Churchill is returning to Canada to begin a west coast tour, including a stop at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni on Friday, March 9, with Vancouver Island’s Emily Spiller opening up the night. Churchill is a musician whose style is explosive, involving intricate fingerpicking, percussive beats on

the body of the guitar. His twohanded tapping is intertwined with an earthy stomp box, powerful harmonica melodies and an earthy voice. Emily Spiller has been described as a hint of Imogen Heap-meets-Zap Mama with a splash of Feist. She blends jazz and blues with layered harmonies with vocal percussion, all done with her voice, a microphone, a
