Government prepares legislation for strike action bell River, KamloopsThompson, Gold Trail, Mission, Coast Mountains, Vancouver Island West, Vancouver Island North, Nechako Lakes and Nisga’a. The week of March 19, all districts except Nicola-Similkameen, Peace River North and Comox Valley-Campbell River are on spring break. NDP members continued Thursday to speak
against Bill 22, which imposes the six-month cooling-off period and penalties for strike action. Once penalty provisions are activated by cabinet order, the BCTF would be subject to ¿nes of $1.3 million a day, $2,500 a day for each BCTF of¿cer who orders strike action, and $475 a day for any teacher who strikes in de¿ance of the legislation.

Striking teachers and union supporters rally at the B.C. legislature Tuesday. A Labour Relations Board order permits one day of strike action next week as the B.C. government prepares to legislate an end to strike action. By Tom Fletcher Black Press With the B.C. Teachers’ Federation promising not to exercise its option of a one-day strike for the ¿rst three days of next week, the B.C. government is moving closer to activating millions of dollars in ¿nes for strike action after that point. Education Minister George Abbott said he hopes to see the government’s legislation imposing a “cooling off period” enacted by next Thursday, March 15. More than half of B.C.’s 60 school districts begin their spring break next week, and the B.C. legislature is scheduled to begin its own one-week spring break on March 15. “It appears that schools will be open on Monday and that’s a wonderful thing,” Abbott said Thursday. “And barring
some change of mind [by the BCTF], they will also be open on Tuesday and Wednesday.” That applies only to districts that are not on spring break the week of March 12. Those districts are Rocky Mountain, Arrow Lakes, Revelstoke, Vernon, Cariboo-Chilcotin, Quesnel, Chilliwack,

Detecting Inflammation It is now widely suspected that inflammation is the primary driver behind most chronic disease. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and thyroid disease are a few of the many disease processes that are driven, at least in part, by inflammation. Inflammation is key to the body's ability to heal. When it is out of control, inflammation turns from a healer to a killer. Diet plays a key role in controlling the inflammatory process and eating a diet rich in whole grains (except wheat), cold water fish, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds will keep your inflammatory processes as low as possible. Beef, peanuts, eggs, fried foods, sugar, wheat and animal fats add fuel to the fire of inflammation. There are a number of tests that can be used to measure chronic inflammation: C-reactive protein and ESR are two tests that will show if inflammation is really high. For most of us,
Only an hour south of the border awaits something special. 2900 acres of unspoiled terrain, over 750 cm of annual snowfall and Canadian cash at par. That’s just part of the Schweitzer Difference.
these tests will be normal even if our inflammation levels are too high for ideal health. In past articles I have written about how thermography can be used to monitor breast health. Digital infrared thermography can also be used for whole body assessment to identify areas of the body that are dangerously inflamed. Using the camera to image the head and neck can show if there is dental, thyroid, sinus and carotid artery inflammation. Images taken of the torso can give information about the inflammatory state of the heart, liver, lungs and, of course, the breasts. Thermal images taken in the clinic are sent to the US where they are assessed by and reported on by medical doctors who specialize in this area. Thermography is a powerful tool to help identify inflammatory processes that are not high enough to show on blood tests but are enough to adversely affect your health.

It is important to note that these awards are given to local businesses that work hard to not only maintain their operations, but also strive to make the community a better place to do business. Over the years previous winners have consistently been seen as leaders in the community, with many of the award winners donating to local charitable causes or helping with sports teams. It is because of these facts that the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce in hosting its Evening of Excellence continues its mandate to help businesses in the city to not only thrive, but to be good corporate citizens. The chamber hopes that next year’s award ceremony will continue to attract the best and brightest of the Cranbrook business community.

Rotary tasting promises to be fun La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley
The Creston Valley Rotary Club annual WineArt fundraiser is one of my favourite events of the year. Unfortunately, we planned our trip to Europe long before the date was announced and we will miss it. And I do mean miss it. For years, WineArt has been on of Creston’s highlights, as it allows opportunities to taste new wines, but also to nosh on delightful snacks and see what local artists have been up to over the winter. It’s the social aspect that holds the greatest appeal, though, as the evening provides a perfect opportunity to move around and chat with friends and acquaintances, all the while knowing that we are supporting the Rotary club’s many good works around our community. This year WineArt will be held on March 30 and 11 wineries have signed on to participate to this point. We are lucky that the event’s organizers understand the appeal of mixing wine, food, art and socializing, so they don’t try to pack in as many wineries as possible—more is not necessarily better. In addition to Creston’s two established wineries, Skimmerhorn and Baillie-Grohman, some old favourites will be pouring samples. Arrowleaf, Silver Sage, House of Rose and Gehringer Brothers are always popular, each of-
fering distinct products. Forbidden Fruit serves as a reminder that wine is not just a grape product. And Hester Creek and Oliver Twist will be there to offer their ¿ne products. Two new wineries have signed on for the 2012 event and I regret I won’t be on hand to taste samples from Cerelia and Castoro de Oro. Both are small, familyowned wineries, located in the Similkameen Valley and on the Golden Mile, respectively. Additional wineries added to the roster this week are Camelot, Larch Hills and Sonoran. Tickets to WineArt are available from Creston Valley Rotary Club members and I am helping out by selling them, too. Contact me at publisher@crestonvalleyadvance.ca to arrange for their purchase. *** I was thinking about our up-coming trip to Europe when I dropped into the BC liquor store the other day. We will be spending a week in Barcelona, so I directed my attention to the Spanish offerings and selected a bottle of Grenache (Garnacha in Spanish), which I usually associate with fresh fruity Àavours. The wine is called Evohé which, according to the label, is the word Jupiter used to encourage Bacchus when he defended his father’s throne during the Giants’ War. Sounds like a good word to toast with. Angela took the ¿rst sip when I poured glasses just before dinner.
She loved it, describing as silky. While the wine was fruity, that wasn’t the characteristic that dominated. Instead, a more complex array of aromas included spices and Àowers—violets and lavender. Thyme and rosemary helped create a distinct earthiness that I always associate more with European wines than New World offerings. And it is bone dry, making it a natural to pair with food. Dinner was sliced roast chicken breasts, topped with ¿ne breadcrumbs, grated Parmesano Reggiano, crushed garlic and spices before baking at 450 degrees. I laid out the chicken atop a bed of Romaine lettuce, which had been tossed with a zesty lime dressing. On the side were slices from a seedy whole wheat baguette and Pecorino cheese. I am rarely enthused by wines with my salad because dressings invariably include vinegar— or “wine gone bad” as one friend used to say. As I ate this simple and tasty meal, I timed my sips of wine to follow bites of the salty cheese and bread slices. I could happily have made a meal of just those with the Evohé, the combination was so good. The chicken and salad became an added bonus. Evohé is made a couple hundred miles inland from Spain’s coastal city of Barcelona, so we will de¿nitely be watching out for Grenache wines from the area around Zaragoza. I can hardly wait.

New Residential Construction Guide Benefits Homeowners and Builders Homeowners have a new tool at their fingertipss to help them better understand how warranty providers evaluate claims for possible design, labour or material defects in new homes. The Residential Construction Performance Guide is the newest online resource available on the provincial Homeowner Protection Office website at www.hpo.bc.ca. It explains how homes covered by home warranty insurance should perform. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. “For most consumers, buying a new home is one of the largest financial investments they will make. So it’s essential that homebuyers can make that investment with confidence, knowing that they will not be faced with additional expenses to repair defects after they move in,” said Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Home Owners’ Association and an advocate for consumer protection. This simple, practical guide is easy to use. It outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled. Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, wood-frame homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings. Builders can also use the guide to help ensure that they deliver high performance homes.
Submitted Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is pleased to announce it has committed $1 million to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to go toward the conservation of Columbia Lake - Lot 48. Located on the east shore of Columbia Lake, approximately ¿ve kilometres south of Fairmont Hot Springs, Lot 48 is 127 hectares of ecologically and culturally important private property sandwiched between protected areas and Crown land. “CBT encourages long-term stewardship of the Basin’s natural assets, which is why we’re pleased we can provide support toward the conservation of Lot 48,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “The purchase will not only help preserve the ecological and cultural values of Lot 48 itself, but of the entire east side of Columbia Lake.” Columbia Lake and its shoreline hold great spiritual signi¿cance to the Ktunaxa Nation. The area features as the cradle of human life in the Ktunaxa Creation Story, and, for thousands of years, the Ktunaxa used the area as a transportation route to the prairies and built villages and camps there. They held ceremonial events there, plus harvested salmon, hunted game and gathered food in the area. Archaeological evidence remains, including pictographs and burial sites. “The east side of Columbia Lake is an integral part of Ktunaxa history,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair. “It is the foundation of the Ktunaxa Creation Story, and has been used by our people for thousands of years.” “Lot 48 is a signi¿cant piece of the cultural landscape of that area. The Ktunaxa Nation supports all efforts to conserve this area for future generations, and we would like to commend Columbia Basin Trust and the Nature Conservancy of Canada for their work and dedication to this common goal.” The property is bounded by Columbia see Conservation page 11

Lake Provincial Park, the Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area and the East Side Columbia Lake Wildlife Management Area. “Lot 48 is the last remaining unprotected parcel in a larger mosaic of protected lands, forming an essential contribution to a larger landscape,â€? said Linda Hannah, BC Regional Vice President, NCC. “Conserving this parcel will create an unbroken network of protected lands that will span more than 7,600 hectares.â€? The area is home to mixed forests and grasslands that provide habitat for rare and endangered animal species like badgers, Ă€ammulated owls and grizzly bears. In addition, endangered plant communities like blue-
bunch wheatgrass and junegrass thrive on the land. Plus it provides valuable winter range for ungulates like bighorn sheep and elk. “With this contribution CBT has provided foundational funding that takes us signiÂżcantly closer to realizing our goal of conserving Lot 48 for now and forever,â€? said Hannah. The entire cost of conserving Lot 48, including setting up a stewardship endowment, will come to $7.2 million. CBT is one

The ¿rst performance of the inaugural tour of a newly commissioned opera is coming to Cranbrook on March 17th. The Symphony of the Kootenays has joined forces with Nelson Community Opera to bring the new work to the Key City Theatre for one show only. “We’re thrilled to be able to present a new and exciting work to local music lovers,” said Symphony manager, Amanda Ball. “It is extremely rare for opera to go on tour, so having Cranbrook included in the tour of a world premiere is a real privilege. This particular work is doubly interesting to us because the composer, Don Macdonald, is the brother of one of the Symphony of the Kootenays directors.” BC composer, Don Macdonald, together with BC playwright, Nicola Harwood were commissioned in 2009 by Nelson’s Amy Ferguson Institute to create this new full length opera. “It has taken us three years and over $100,000 to get this opera to the point where we can bring it to theatres around the Kootenays,” said Marty Horswill, producer of the opera. “After all this effort and expense we felt we owed it to everyone involved to take the risk and tour this new work to the widest audience possible. We’re all looking forward to bringing the Kootenay’s very own opera to life on the stage of the Key City Theatre, “ Horswill concluded. Entitled KHAOS, the ancient Greek word for the space between heaven and earth, the new opera is a reimagining of the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone set in a contemporary world of climate change and looming global catastrophe. Librettist, Nicola Harwood, recounted that she and Macdonald were looking for a subject matter that was both current and universal in its appeal. “We hit upon the myth of Demeter and Persephone and we wondered what this myth might look like in today’s world? So our re-telling of the Demesee KHAOS page 13

Would Demeter’s grief and rage end life on earth as we know it?’” As an internationally recognized, award winning, ¿lm score composer, Don Macdonald is very familiar with the role music plays in advancing the dramatic Àow on the big screen. “Opera is the same except the action is on a stage, the dialogue is sung and the music is front and centre, not just in the background,” said Macdonald. “To

FUNDING FOR STUDENTS, NOT FOR WAGE HIKES. The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases. It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.
BCTF CLAIMS AND DEMANDS
FACT
The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.
The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.
The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.
The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.
The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.
The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.
The union says that government refuses to negotiate.
There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.
The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.
Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.
The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.
2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.
It’s time to focus on what matters most in education – BC’s students. That’s why we are focused on per-student funding which is at an all time high, not on wage increases. We all want to do more to make BC’s education system even better. It’s the driving force behind BC’s Education Plan that teachers, parents and students are helping to shape. Teachers care about their students. Parents care about their children’s future.

You can also shop around in second-hand stores and antique shops, where you can ¿nd all sorts of treasures to recycle or restore. Salvaging and re-using old furniture can be a unique and inexpensive way to decorate your home. For a quick-¿x, a new cover in organic cotton or linen can breathe new life into a well-used couch. The important thing is to not overload the décor; common sense and style need to work
together. Take care to define the different areas of activity with rugs and partitions, and repeat colours and textures from one room to another to create harmony.

The family of the late Stan L. Wieler would very much like to thank all the wonderful friends who have touched us with their kindness. It continues to be a very dif¿cult time and all your support has made such a tremendous difference to our lives. A very special “Thank you” to Chris Ondrik for her wonderful Eulogy, Pastor Werner Froese for his touching service. To all the people who travelled so far to show their respect, how do I ever thank you enough for being here. To all the people who have and continue to hug us as we try to ¿nd our way without Stan. The cards and notes have been overwhelming, again, thank you. The continuing of calls and emails, the friends from the past who have come back into our lives – thank you. To the Palliative Care Nurses and Care givers that came to the home to help us care for Stan, you were, to say the least outstanding. McPherson’s for once again doing a wonderful service. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years, Shannon, Mother Pearl, Daughters:Tammy(Dave), Kim(Mike), grandchildren, Amanda (Bart), Sean, Randy, Brandon. Brothers: Tom (Joan), Glen (Linda), Don (Maurine). Sister Bev (Ray). He touched the lives of so many. He will be missed forever; by all. A service will be held at the Ft. Small and spunky makes for a great driving experience Overall: Kia’s popular and stylish small off-roader gets some changes for 2012 to make it friendlier to drive on the road. Drivetrain: Spunky 2.4-litre four-cylinder or 2.0-litre I4 turbo with more than 260 horsepower on tap; fourwheel-drive system can lock up the front and rear axles for improved off-road agility.
T
he paint has barely dried on the allnew third-generation Sportage and Kia is already ¿ddling with the package. The most signi¿cant change to the Sportage is what you’ll ¿nd under the hood: an all-new 260-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine shared with other Kia/Hyundai models. It delivers feisty performance in such a relatively small vehicle. The base powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 176 horse-
power when hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in base frontwheel-drive models), or 170 horses with the optional six-speed automatic. The Sportage uses an all-wheel-drive system that under normal driving conditions directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels. Once tire slip is detected, the required degree of power is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a ¿xed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. The base Sportage now includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-free entertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist (that prevents the vehicle from
rolling backward down a hill while in gear). Downhill brake control maintains a ¿xed forward speed without the driver having to touch the brake pedal, which prevents a runaway situation. Along with an automatic transmission, the LX adds a few minor tidbits, while ordering the middle-rung EX features dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, keyless entry, glovebox cooler, re-tuned high-performance shocks and 18inch wheels (16- and 17-inch rims are installed on base and LX trims, respectively). The top-line SX features the turbocharged engine, unique body pieces and wheels, and more supportive seats. An upgraded audio system, push-button start or even a cargo cover are all optional, as is a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats (offered when the leather seat-cover option is speci¿ed.)

The 260-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-charged engine gives the sporty Kia Sportage the power to take you where you need to go while still driving like a sports car. Base price (incl. destination): $24,000 Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (170-176)
Optional engine: 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (260) Layout: Front engine, front- /four-wheeldrive Transmissions: Six-
speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt. / std. with turbo) l/100 km (city/hwy): 10.0/6.9 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags;
side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,430
Economical on gas with the body to take you anywhere keyless entry pad, back-up warning system, automatic headlamps and heated outside mirrors, while the Limited includes dual-zone climate control, 10-way power driver’s seat, power-adjustable pedals, rear-view camera, pushbutton start and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited’s options list bristles with goodies such as a navigation system, heated-and-cooled leather seats, blind-spot warning system and power liftgate, to name a few. For off-roading, V6 models can be ordered with Ford’s “terrain management” four-wheel-drive system that can be adjusted by the driver to Normal, Mud, Sand or Snow settings. The system then adjusts the front-to-rear torque bias accordingly as well as side to side.

More car-like than its predecessors, the 2012 Ford Explorer has maintained its clearance, power-to-weight ratio and its looks. Overall: After reinventing itself as a car-based tall wagon that is both re¿ned and technologically advanced, the Explorer ratchets up the ef¿ciency. Drivetrain: No more V8, but instead a 290-horsepower V6 and a fuel-sipping turbo four-cylinder available on front-wheel-drive models.
K
eeping the popular Explorer tag could have blown up in Ford’s face. It was a rough-riding, heavy and thirsty machine. That changed for the 2011 model year when the Explorer adopted unitized (frameless) architecture that’s common to most passenger cars. It’s still rugged enough to tackle all but the roughest terrain and trailer up to 2,300 kilograms in the process. Additionally, the “Ex” is nearly 40 kilos lighter than the truck-ish
2010 edition. And in case you actually do decide to go where others fear to tread, the Explorer’s ample ground clearance and available 20-inch rubber should help you arrive unscathed. The interior (also car-like) provides room for up to seven passengers, or six when the second-row bench is replaced by optional lounge chairs. Both the second and third rows fold Àat for maximum storage, but fall short of the space offered in the previous Explorer as well
as that of many current competitors. While the base 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 is adequate and ef¿cient, the optional turbocharged 240-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine - front-drive models only - achieves 7.0 l/100 km on the highway. Base Explorers arrive with most of the expected trappings for this class of vehicle, including hill-start assist that keeps you from rolling backward while stopped on an incline. The mid-range XLT adds a coded
