The British Columbia and federal governments have relaxed some of the rules for student-loan repayment, part of an integrated loan program that went into effect on July 1. The new repayment-assistance plan allows for smaller payments for lower-income students, based on income, number of dependent children and the amount of student debt owed. The program extends the repayment time and may allow forgiveness of the origi-
nal loan amount. A single parent with two children and an average annual income of $30,000 would see the minimum interest payment on a $20,000 student loan decrease from $228 to zero. A student couple with two children, combined income of $50,000 and combined loans totalling $40,000 would see their minimum payments fall from $485 to $87. Premier Christy Clark said the new repayment rules will expand the number of B.C. students eligible for relief to 20,000, replacing strict incomebased limits for loan repayment

that didn’t reflect loan size or number of dependents. “It’s going to be a really big benefit for people who might find themselves $1,000 over the eligibility line. Just because you’re $1,000 better off in your gross income doesn’t mean it’s going to be a whole lot easier to pay everything back.” The new repayment-assistance plan also provides for forgiveness of some, or all, of the loan principal if students have dependents and their income stays low over time. Students with a permanent disability can qualify for full

loan forgiveness if they still can’t afford the full loan payment after 10 years. B.C. student loans given out before Aug. 1, 2011 are automatically moved to the new national student loan system effective July 1. Loan recipients are supposed to receive a new agreement with the terms of the integrated loan. People with B.C. student loans in default can qualify for the integrated loan program by making at least six consecutive monthly loan payments on their defaulted loan or repaying it in full.

CiB: there is still time to enter
By Angela Cole We are fast approaching the arrival of our Communities in Bloom judges and our community is reacting so positively. One big move is the recent challenge put out by 100 Mile Chevron, which is entered in the business competition, to all Highway 97 businesses for the appearance of their properties. Highway 97 Business owners can register for one of these categories: Most Appealing Entrance; Best Outdoor Floral Display; and Tidiest Property. Remember that a clean and attractive curb will attract customers and help inspire others to bring the public to our downtown core. We have a lot to show off and can all help keep our town look-
ing beautiful. At a recent district council meeting, Rotary Club of 100 Mile House president Maureen Pinkney proposed a fantastic project that could possibly work hand-in-hand with the Communities in Bloom program. If this project goes through, functions like our Celebration of Lights and Community Barbecue could take place in a town square next to the community hall. This would be an appropriate place for many weatherdependant functions. We are also looking for a log-building company or log supplier to help us assist certain zoned properties in complying with a bylaw stating dumpsters need to be enclosed. If we can get the ones that are sitting in eyesight for businesses and apartment buildings
tidied up, it would enhance the look of the property. Any group that can put together a price list to build these is asked to contact the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce at 250395-6124. Next week, we will announce the location of the Community Barbecue to welcome the judges. This is an exciting week for us all. Take note of what you can do or your community group can do for the final presentation. For example 100 Mile Lions Club is taking
on the chore of landscaping the Parkside Gallery. Tidy up your gardens, yards and other areas that you need some attention, as 100 Mile Garden Club members will be determining the winners July 14,
beginning at 10 a.m. The tour begins at Central GM and will view all places inside the District of 100 Mile House. Enter online www.southcariboo chamber.org under Community Events or call 250-706-2044.

Canim Lake Band is hosting a Mining, Trades & Technology Fair for youth on July 5-6. More than 20 booths are organized for the fair, as well as guest speakers from the mining, trades and technology fields and various educational institutions from Smithers to Vancouver. Canim Lake Band land administrator Pam Theodore says the job fair is open to all youth in the South Cariboo and surrounding areas. Invitations have already been extended to School District #27, surrounding bands and local secondary schools. Theodore adds it is a great chance for local youth to get a better understanding of what is available for jobs and opportunities in

Tsq'escen volunteer firefighters welcome new truck to department Ken Alexander Free Press
It was all smiles at the Tsq’escen Volunteer Fire Department hall recently as firefighters got a first look at their new engine, manufactured by Hub Fire Engines of Abbotsford. The truck has been built with a high midbody and high angle departure that will enable it to better negotiate the terrain and roads of the Cariboo. The GMC pumper, which has been in service since the fire department was established in 1983, will continue to be “on duty, says fire chief Greg Archie. He adds the fire service has 16 regular members, 12 of whom have been active since the department’s inception in 1983. They practise weekly on Tuesdays. New recruits are always welcome, he notes. “We are an expanding department that has five new recruits. Most of our wives provide support for the logistics and incidents, and are a very large

Tsq’escen volunteer firefighters were very happy to receive their new engine recently. Province invests $5 million in Vancouver Prostate Centre
Diana Forster photo
A group gathered at the viewpoint overlooking Lac des Roches to show off the newest Fishing Highway Tourist Association information sign. The sign is chock full of fishing and resort information, and it’s aimed at attracting tourists who stop at the viewpoint.
Fishing Highway Tourist Association sign is up By Diana Forster In the presence of Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure area manager Michelle Schilling, Fishing Highway Tourist Association (FHTA) members unveiled their new information board at the Lac des Roches viewpoint June 28. The FHTA has three information boards, including one at Little Fort, one at the intersection of Highways 24 and 97, and the most informative one at Lac des Roches.
The signboard, made by Lac des Roches Resorts’ Luca Lanzoni and Free Rein Guest Ranch’s Debbie Atha, has 25 spaces, 17 of which are filled with members’ signs created by Backroad Signs. Highway 24 tourist businesses who require space should contact Maggie Benzing of Seawood B&B at 250-5930370. The fees vary depending on whether you have one, two or three signs and at which locations. The information on the board includes everything the tour-
ist travelling through might need to know, and as strong supporter Barnett said, “If you think you’re in the wilderness, think again; there’s cappuccino just around the corner.
British Columbia men will benefit from a $5-million provincial grant to the Vancouver Prostate Centre. After lung cancer and colorectal cancer, prostate cancer is the third-leading cause of male cancer death and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian men. It is estimated that in 2012, about 3,574 B.C. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 541 men will die from it. A national centre of excellence, the Vancouver Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital is a collaborative initiative of Vancouver Coastal Health under the umbrella of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research
Institute and the University of B.C. (UBC). It is unique in that it includes a clinic, a healtheducation centre for prostate cancer patients and their families, and a research facility. Researchers at the Prostate Centre hold cross-faculty appointments at UBC faculty of medicine and collaborate with clinical and research groups nationally and inter-
nationally. The centre provides education for numerous trainees, including the following: 15 post-doctoral fellows, two clinical fellows, 15 urology residents, 20 graduate students and seven summer students. The Vancouver Prostate Centre also generates economic
opportunities for the province through domestic and internationally collaborative activities, the attraction of research investment to B.C., the positive tax impact of its activities, and the intellectual property benefits for any technology and processes developed here.

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CANCER, LEO, AND VIRGO.
ARIES
Whether you’re on vacation or not, you will participate in some interesting activities that bring together a lot of people. You will also add a personal touch to the décor of your home. TAURUS

You might feel exhausted after a period of high stress. You will work some extra hours that will be financially rewarding. CANCER
You will be very busy with customers at work, and all the emergencies will be passed on for you to sort out. Once the weekend arrives your friends will provide you with some welcome relief. LEO
You will start planning your vacation this week. You will be very determined about making last-minute reservations, but your success will be rather mixed. Have patience, and try to stay flexible. VIRGO
You might decide to invest in a new décor for your home. You might also be seriously considering selling or buying a property. Either way, you will find some great opportunities.

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this!
