Nicola Valley mourns local teen killed in crash Vehicle fell from embankment on Highway 5A south of Kamloops By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD
newsroom@merrittherald.com
Victor Charlie touched every piece of this valley and then some, said Shackan Band Councillor Leonard Joe during Friday’s funeral service at the Nicola Valley Rodeo Grounds. Hundreds of people filled the bleachers at the rodeo grounds for the morning service to honour Charlie who died when his truck fell down a 150-foot embankment on Highway 5A a week earlier. Kamloops Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said emergency crews were called to a portion of the highway near Napier Lake, about 20 kilometres south of Kamloops, just before 3:30 p.m. on July 20. A motorist had noticed skid marks leaving the roadway, he said. Fire crews located the truck about 150 feet down the embankment and the single occupant — identified by the BC Coroners Service as 18-year-old Charlie — was found dead inside. Charlie, a member of Merritt Secondary School’s graduation class of 2011, would have turned 19 two days later. Friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil two days after the accident at the rodeo grounds on July 22 — the day that would have been his birthday. Again, the community filled the rodeo ground stands on Friday for Charlie’s funeral services. Pallbearers carried his cas-

one year in the Law Enforcement Preparatory Program. He had hoped to pursue a career with the RCMP. His other dream was to be a rodeo bull rider. “It’s fitting to be here at the rodeo grounds,” said Joe, stooping to pick up a handful of dirt. “He was one of our true native sons of the Valley. “Looking out we can see all the lives he touched in his short life. We all felt a gap in our hearts on the day we heard the sad
story.” During the service, Sarah Forsberg, Charlie’s girlfriend of three years, also spoke, as well as representatives from the Charlie and Snider families. Before those in attendance said their final farewells, Master of Ceremonies Jayson Charters (Charlie’s cousin) spoke to the youth and advised them to drive cautiously. “When you’re driving your vehicle out there from this day

forward, please be careful,” he said. “Take a lot of time to get where you’re going. Being late is OK; never showing up, it’s not OK.” After songs from David Forsberg and Randy Chillihitzia, as well as an “eight second tribute” to the aspiring rodeo rider, the service concluded. “Let’s say goodbye to the one that packed the biggest smile in the Nicola Valley,” said Charters. Charlie was buried in Ashcroft.

Disgraced cop won’t go to jail for death Former Merritt Mountie is sentenced to house arrest and a curfew By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
The disgraced former Merritt Mountie who is responsible for the 2008 death of 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson will serve one month house arrest and an 11-month curfew, court heard on Friday. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Janice Dillon said she made what many believe to be a light sentence based on former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin “Monty Robinson’s status as a
First Nations, a firsttime offender and as an alcoholic. The 11-month probation requires Robinson to be home by 9 p.m. and he is required to pay a $1,000 victim surcharge fee, as well as a requirement to write an apology letter to Hutchinson’s family. Robinson didn’t help the injured Hutchinson, who was riding a motorbike in Delta at the time of the collision. Instead, he took his kids home, drank a couple of

vodka shots and then returned to the scene. The vodka was reportedly a move Robinson learned from his experience as a police officer to throw off the breathalyzer test and it is possibly what saved him from a more serious charge and conviction. Hutchinson’s mother, Judith, told
CBC News outside court that the sentence is something a child would endure for poor behavior. “That sentence just felt like he was just being grounded, she said. “It doesn’t feel like a sentence to me. The family originally called for jail time. The maximum sentence for obstruction
of justice is 10 years in prison. The Crown was seeking up to nine months in jail or a conditional sentence of between one year and 18 months. “We are not out for blood,â€? Judith said. “We just wanted some kind of justice‌ This is very disappointing. It has been four years to come to this.â€? During those four years, Robinson was still being paid by the RCMP and they never disclosed who was covering his legal costs. Robinson is also

Country Hall of Fame welcomes visitors By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame is open on Quilchena Avenue and visitors have been rolling in. The building, which houses some of the most famous country music memorabilia in Canada, opened July 12. The opening represents the kickoff of the Country Music Hall of Fame under the new licensing agreement with the Canadian Country Music Association and National Music Centre. “This is definitely a product that has good legs to it,” said Manager of Community Futures Nicola Valley and Director of the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society Rob Miller. “Now that we have our legal ducks in a row, it’s off to the races.” He said the goal of having the hall in Merritt is to provide the community with another tourist stop. “There’s been some really good numbers of people arriving, from both during the bike rally and this week,” he said on Friday. “People seem to be interested in the Hall of Fame and in the efforts that are being made to profile Canadian country music’s greats.” Tanisha Suzuki, Hall of Fame employee, said people have visited from throughout the world, including Australia and New Zealand. “And from all over Canada,” she said. “People come in to see if we have the country star who is from their
community. We’ve even had people from Merritt coming in and realizing it’s open.” Miller said the intent is to keep the hall open through to the end of August. “Come September, we’ll try to see if there is funding available and or volunteer support to maintain the minimum number of hours we’d like to have,” he said. “Going into the fall will be slower in terms of visitor traffic anyway, but we do want to make sure there is a presence.” He said many bus tours come through town and the Hall of Fame would be an ideal stop. “We need to make sure it is an itinerary stop as well as a package tour,” he said. The hall hasn’t received government or municipal funding and relies on donations from the public, summer student funding and support from directors. “We will likely be going forward with a number of grant requests and financial support requests to various levels of government very shortly and hopefully some of those will come through so we can kick a sustainability plan into high gear,” Miller said. The group is also contemplating releasing a country music anthology CD to help generate funds. The Hall of Fame is open on Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hall is closed on Sundays and Tanisha Suzuki has been hired to staff the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, which is open now for the sumMondays. mer. Located on Quilchena Avenue, the hall houses memorabilia from Canadian country music. Phillip Woolgar/Herald
Merritt News to shut its doors this week The Merritt News announced Thursday that the local paper will end publication this week. Interim Publisher Tim Shoults said the decision to close was due to economic reasons. “The paper is operating at a loss and has not performed
financially as we expected for an extended period of time,” Shoults explained in the announcement published on the News’ front page (July 26). “We do not project being able to return the operation to a profitable position, and have therefore made the difficult decision to cease operations.”

HERALD OPINION Ask voters about pipeline Perhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta — over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean — as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposed-to-pipeline position and Conservatives have claimed the support-with-conditions spot. However, by demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed — and they include First Nations along the proposed route from Alberta to Kitimat — have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage. Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release of July 24, when he said the Clark B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories — with or without scads of cash — the pipeline simply will not come to be. With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013, general election ballot. A simple question — Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? — could produce results that tell the government exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. Ask questions before doling out dollars ANDREW HOLOTA Guest COLUMNIST Two potential story leads we recently followed didn’t pan out as the major news stories they were purported to be, but they were good examples of how local nonprofit agencies and campaigns often find themselves in competition with obscure groups and initiatives.
An organization called the Fraser Valley Grocery Resource Society recently distributed empty grocery bags to about 800 Abbotsford homes, along with a note requesting food donations, and the statement “we support local food banks.” That was news to Dave Murray, the co-ordinator of Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) Food Bank. He hadn’t heard of the “Grocery Society” until a local resident gave him one of the bags and asked if it was associated with the local food bank. It wasn’t. An Abbortsford News reporter looked into this

outfit, which claims on its website to be focused on helping seniors, students and other low-income people. Turns out they are “stockpiling” the food in donated warehouse space in Surrey. There is no distribution centre, but the president of the society says he hopes to have one set up in Aldergrove. In the meantime, Kelly Fowler confirmed his group intends to sell some of the donated food at reduced prices, and the groceries will be delivered to lowincome seniors. Fowler said he wants to focus on seniors because

“they get ignored … nobody is taking care of seniors.” The note that accompanies the empty bag for generous people to fill doesn’t reveal that the food may be resold. Fowler says that information is on his website. Murray questions the ethics of selling donated food. So do I. Would you still give to an organization that turns around and sells the groceries to the people it’s supposed to be helping, even at cut rates? I’m guessing many of you would not. As for seniors being “ignored,” that’s not true,

according to Murray. The elderly can receive help through the ACS Food Bank or through the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers food to seniors and others who have difficulty leaving their homes. I’m sure local churches also provide aid to the elderly, or would be quick to help if asked. The second story we followed involved the sale of chocolates by kids. They go door-to-door, selling the candy for a Kelowna-based business. They don’t claim to be a charity, but they do say they

HERALD QUESTION OF THE WEEK
From Page 4 are working for a “youth program.” Some of the funds supposedly go to student prizes for good grades, and perfect attendance, and the company website says a laptop computer is awarded monthly to the student who writes the best essay. Despite those ostensibly laudable efforts, the Students 1st group is a business. It has a business licence in Abbotsford and other communities. They sell chocolates. The kids take a share of the revenue, the drivers who transport them take a cut and the business owner presumably makes money from selling the chocolates to the drivers/distributors. There’s nothing illegal about it. But if you hear some sort of reference to a “youth program” from a nice kid at the door, are you more likely to buy a $4 box of chocolatecovered almonds? Probably. Now what if it was an adult who said he or she was there to sell chocolates on behalf of a non-local business? Probably not. And what if you bought those chocolates yesterday, and today another nice teen knocked on the door, selling something to raise funds for a local school event or charity? Do you give your support again? And the next time? It’s called donor burnout, and it’s problematic enough for bona fide non-profit agencies and campaigns, without adding out-oftown groups and business schemes drawing money from a very finite source. The moral of both of these stories is to ask questions before you take the cash out of your wallet. There are countless very good, very legitimate, very local causes out there. There are also some initiatives and enterprises that deserve your scrutiny before you dole out your dollars. Andrew Holota is the editor of the Abbotsford Times.

Sick of complaints about RCMP Dear Editor: I take serious offense to anyone who thought that the RCMP were doing anything other than their jobs at the Great Canadian Bike Rally in Merritt. I had the opportunity to notice on many occasions of how helpful the RCMP were to visitors from out of town. Of course there were more resources brought in for the rally, but no more than what would be expected for an event of this size.
I also applaud the RCMP for keeping control of the traffic; that means enforcing the traffic laws as they should be. We as taxpayers should be happy that we are getting our money’s worth when it comes to the way the RCMP conducted themselves. Anyone who says or writes otherwise was probably part of the problem during the rally. The members of the RCMP, when not working, are regular citizens like most of us. They are just regular people doing a stressful job,
and all they want to do is work their shift and be able to go home to their loved ones. I am sick of the people that write in how they think the RCMP should be doing their job. If you think you can do better, then apply to the force, take your training, and then you will be qualified to tell them how they should be doing their jobs. Rob Penner Kelowna, B.C.
ONLINE COMMENTS
Readers weigh in on RCMP presence at rally Glen Krajci: “I am 100 per cent in favour of having a strong police presence at any event where the possibilities of hundreds of people + alcohol + the possibilty of drugs exist. I do not (as people who know me, and know of what happened to me in the past), however, agree with police harassment (over and above legitimate “probable grounds” investigation) and brutality (over and above legitimate arrest procedures). I would encourage anyone who witnesses acts that I have described above to follow the cor-
rect procedures by filing (a) complaint(s) by meeting with the local staff sergeant in whatever location, or the nearest location where the actions, which you are filing a complaint about, took place. I would like to reiterate, at this time, that in policing, there is a fine line between harassment/brutality and legitimate policing. Sometimes the witness bystander may not know all of the facts and history, and what appears to be brutality is entirely warranted, due to the alleged criminal’s past behaviour/ crimes.
Just something to think about.” Jerry Langley: “I agree the police attendance seemed to be more than the motorists; however, they were expecting three times the amount from the year before and I felt safe with all of them there and if there were 15,000. They should have relieved most of them after seeing the crowd. I really enjoyed it overall, less the heat.” Adele Tompkins: “Totally uncalled for. With no issues last year what could possibly be the
reasoning behind it?” Marcia StreetThomson: “They said it was because of how many participants were expected — don’t understand this. Sturgis USA police don’t go all crazy with millions of bikers. I think they were trying to justify their costs this year. But they have probably wrecked it for Merritt. Like Lindy says, the police need to be cleaning up their acts instead of letting bad cops become badder, especially when it is a fundraiser for kids and the community.”

Young writers train at Penticton workshop Three Merritt kids add tools to their literary abilities By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Three Merritt youths who appear to have gifts for writing returned recently from a six-day Penticton writing workshop. Each of them has already completed short stories and chapters of fiction novels. Darian Krajci began writing several lines of Scooby-Doothemed stories when he was just six years old, and his writing continues to evolve at a rapid pace. “I don’t really know what got me into writing,” said the 11-yearold. “Me and my friends are always talking about things like, ‘Oh, this would be a really great movie idea, if this happened and this happened.’” He said his novel is a combination of many of the ideas that his group of friends created. “I like doing scifi-ish type of writing, mainly future kind of stuff,” he said. “My

friends are always saying with me, ‘That is so cool — that explosion and sci-fi stuff.’” During the workshop, Krajci learned from professional writers such as Lorna Schultz Nicholson, Endrené Shepherd, Mary Ann Thompson and C.A. Lang. Each day featured lessons on a new variety of writing. The workshop dealt mainly with various writing styles. His father, Glen, has books throughout the home and has been reading to his children since they were infants. “He liked to watch Scooby-Doo movies and so he’d write little four or five sentence Scooby-Doo stories,” he said, noting the stories started out simple. “There would be sto-
ries like Scooby and Shaggy see a monster, they chase the monster and then they get the monster. “His stories have evolved quite rapidly, I think, and he’s doing pretty good for his age.” Glen has an English degree and said reading is a major part of his family’s daily activities. For two other young writers — Michelle and Cole Schultz — the workshop was an opportunity to expand their writing styles. Michelle said she used to focus on strictly realistic fiction, but since the workshop she has started writing horror fantasy novels. “The workshop has really made me want to explore different genres,” said the
15-year-old. “I was really given a lot of different tools to play with.” Cole, 10, said he used to just write short stories, but his writing has now expanded. “My stories are sort of real, but there is a lot of stuff that doesn’t happen,” he said. “It could happen, but it’s very unlikely that it’s ever happened before.” The workshop was hosted by the Penticton Writers and Publishers group, which was established in 1994. The workshops were started by housewives who wanted to learn about the writing and publishing business. Since its creation, PWAP has published coffee table books, including Penticton and Areas Secrets and Surprises, The Novel Approach to Self-Publishing, Supernatural Stories around British Columbia, and Penticton, British Columbia - Silhouette of Four Seasons.

Entrepreneurs created employment for each other JEANETTE MCMASTER In FRIENDSHIP Reflecting on my childhood, I grew up in an era when everything was clean. By this, I mean our people had no drug problems and there was no unemployment. Our parents were entrepreneurs and they created work for one another. My dad, Billy McLeod, had no education. He never went to school, but he had a good business mind. He was one of many men who used the opportunities that were set before them. He had a ranch situated on acres of prime land. He traded with other business people and hired men to work for him during haying time. He also had a summer camp up in the mountain range. As I think back on this, it must have taken much hard labour to set up the camp. He had to cut timber and make hay mangers for the horses and poles for the canvas tents that were set up for the
workers to use. The hay mangers were set up close to the creek and he had about four of them, which could feed around 10 work horses. When the time came for the people to move to the camp, my dad had men with their teams of horses, hitched up to their wagons or hay sloops, loaded with supplies. They would transport the goods. Everyone had a job to do. That is what made everything fall into place. The supplies included equipment for the haying crew, as well as food supplies and cooking utensils. There would be a cook stove already in place at the cook tent. I can still visualize the trek — a convoy of men and women eager to get to work. The dirt road was steep and rough. From our house I could see them, but only for a short time, then they would disappear. I used to be in a hurry to get up to the camp too. Then my mom Lizzette would have our horse saddled up and I would ride double with her. We did not need a car seat, or “saddle seat.” We would have our lunch, which my mom placed inside her saddle bag along with
water. The ride to the mountain range hay camp would take at least one hour or more. When we arrived at the campsite, everyone was already very busy unloading kitchen supplies into the cook tent. Others would be setting their tents up with their personal stuff. We had a group of people who were just like family, though they came from areas like Shulus, and some-
times from Lillooet or Keremeos. Every year the people knew when my dad would be needing their help, so they would prepare for the long journey. Some travelled by horseback with their families in the wagons. Those were exciting times for us. There would be a young man hired to chop wood for the kitchen and for the outdoor campfire. At times he would be used to unhar-

ness the team of horses, and give them water and food. Others were hired to work in the hay fields, cutting the hay and raking it up so the women could scoop the hay with pitchforks into piles. This made it easy for the men with the hay sloops to come along and pick up the hay. Read more about my memories in next Tuesday’s Herald. As always, in friendship.

The 2012 Olympics underway! Cents unveil 40th anniversary logo The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are officially underway in London, England with over 10,000 athletes from 204 countries participating in 302 events representing 26 different sports. Canada has 277 athletes on hand in London, and is hoping for a top12 finish in the medal competition. As of this newspaper’s publication deadline at midday on Monday, China and the U.S. were in the lead with 16 medals apiece.

Disaster strikes Canadian 3-day event team in London Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Merritt’s Dana Cooke and the rest of the Canadian three-day event equestrian team on the third day of competition at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Three of Canada’s five team riders took tumbles on the challenging cross-country course at Greenwich Park in downtown London and were officially eliminated from further competition. Salmon Arm’s Rebecca Howard (who Cooke is the groom for), along with Hawley Bennett-Awad from
Langley and Peter Barry from Ontario all become dislodged from their horses at different stages of the 5.3 km course that included a number of difficult jumps and changes in terrain. While Howard and Barry were able to pick themselves up and walk off the course along with their rides, BennettAwad’s accident was more serious and the Canadian team veteran had to be transported by ambulance to Royal London Hospital for further examination. In Howard’s case, she became unbalanced on a downhill drop to an uphill chevron (verti-
cal jump), allowed her reins to get too long, and finally was unseated from her 11-year-old gelding Riddle Master. The Canadian 2012 Olympic three-day event team went into the cross-country phase of the competition in 11th place following a somewhat disappointing first day of competition in dressage. Leading the way for the Canadian team in the dressage ring was Bennett-Awad on board Gin & Juice. They sat in 31st place with 48.70 penalty points. Rebecca Howard and Riddle Master had Canada’s second best
individual dressage score with 50.60 penalty points, good for 34th place overall. Canada’s other three riders in phase one of the event competition were Jessica Phoenix (50th, 54.80 pts.), Michelle Mueller (56th, 57.00 pts.) and Peter Barry (67th, 61.70 pts.). With just two riders eligible to continue on to the stadium jumping portion of the three-day event competition on Tuesday, Canada had no chance of vying for a team medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. Going into Tuesday’s finale, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden were

sitting first, second and third respectively in the team event. In individual competition, Canada’s Phoenix sits in 28th place, and Mueller in 58th position.
On Friday of last week, the Merritt Centennials hockey club officially released their 40th anniversary logo, which the team will use throughout the 2012-13 season. It celebrates the organization’s 40 uninterrupted years of Junior A hockey in the Nicola Valley, and the Centennials’ distinction as the longest continually-run franchise in the British Columbia Hockey League. The logo will be seen on the shoulder of Cents’ jerseys, on all club marketing materials, and throughout various digital platforms during the upcoming hockey season. The logo consists of the Centennials’ traditional symbols - the stylized letter ‘C’, a puck and hockey stick - along with a sprawling white ribbon at its base. The number ‘40’ is on the left side of the ribbon, and the word ‘YEARS’ on the right side, with the BCHL logo in the middle. Belown the white ribbon is a smaller red ribbon with the words ‘Established in 1973’ written on it to commemorate the 1973-74 season when the Junior A franchise was moved from White Rock to Merritt. The Cents’ 40th season will see the return of several favorite faces throughout the year as past players will be remembered and honored. “This is a milestone season for the Centennials’ organization, and given its rich history and tradition, one we’re excited to celebrate,” said Cents’ media and communications co-ordinator Brian Wiebe who helped design the logo along with the staff at Merritt Printing. “The Cents have accomplished some wonderful things over the years, both on and off the ice, and there are so many individuals in our community - past and present - who deserve credit.” Wiebe added, “Reflecting on how far our storied franchise has come over four decades, it’s amazing to think that what began as a group of businessmen - Jim Flux, Len Pare, Bill Pooley, John Mulvey and Don Dewinetz - purchasing the White Rock Centennials in January, 1974 has evolved into what is today the longest continuously-run team in the BCHL, and more importantly, one of the most revered, thanks to the efforts of those early pioneers.” The Centennials 40th regular season officially commences on Saturday, Sept. 8 with their first of two games at the BCHL’s first annual Showcase event in Chilliwack. The Cents’ first home game is on Saturday, Sept. 15 versus the visiting Trail Smoke Eaters. The Centennials invite all of the Nicola Valley to be part of their 40th anniversary season.
