Travelling the Sunshine Coast A ferry ride away, there are hiking trails, wilderness lodges, coastal adventures, and don’t forget the cinnamon buns in Lund

ake a weekend away from bustling Vancouver and enjoy the Sunshine Coast — starting with your departure from the ferry terminal in Horseshoe Bay. Arriving in Landgale, roll down your window and begin your journey along the Sunshine Coast highway — an incredibly scenic drive, with gentle twists and turns, running alongside the Strait of Georgia.

It’s worth it to take the second ferry ride to historic Lund.

After driving through Gibsons and Sechelt, turn left on Maderia Park Drive and stop in at Copper Sky Gallery and Café (EarthlyCreatures.ca) for a picnic lunch — to go. Park your car and take a short hike to Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park, where you can take in some truly turbulent (and dangerous) rapids created by the ebb and flow of the tides.

Back in the car, continue to the town of Egmont where, tucked away, is West Coast Wilderness Lodge (WCWL.com.). The lodge is popular for its outdoor wilderness excursions, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a double rainbow during your visit.

Still feeling adventurous? Leave Earl’s Cove in your rear-view mirror and drive aboard the second BC Ferry, bound for Saltery Bay and the Upper Sunshine Coast. Once you’re there, you’ll have plenty of options for spending the night.

Beach Gardens Resort and Marina (BeachGardens.com) offers hotel-style accommodations, with a seaside restaurant and pub called The Savoury Bight. Interestingly, it is also the host of the annual Powell River Blues Festival.

A little farther along the highway and to your right, you will find Herondell Bed and Breakfast, where the meals are homemade and the hosts provide great stories, warm conversation and jokes that will knock your socks off. A true hidden gem.

As you make your way closer to Lund, and “Mile 0” of the Pacific Coastal Highway, you’ll come to the turn-off for Desolation Sound Resort (DesolationResort.com). These accommodations might be best described as tree forts for adults. You will feel like you’re revisiting your youth — but with a king-size bed and hot tub.

At the highway’s end, you can steer to the left and continue exploring the Sunshine Coast — by boat.

TerraCentric Coastal Adventures (TerraCentricAdventures.com) offers adventure learning with its marine sightseeing tours by Zodiac.

Prefer to stay on land? The 180-kilometre Sunshine Coast Trail (SunshineCoast-trail.com) is easily accessible. With the option to hike for an hour or several days, remember to plan your hike and tell someone where you are going.

Moderate: For a two-coast, three-ferry circle adventure, head to Vancouver Island. From Nanaimo you can ride up the old Island highway to Courtney/ Comox. Cross by sea eastwards to Powell River, then pedal down the Sunshine Coast and into West Vancouver. Tip: If you feel lazy, you can throw your bike on public transit at Sechelt.

Challenging: Ride, drive or bus to Terrace, then pedal the paved, wide-shouldered Cassair Highway (Hwy 37) into Dease Lake and beyond. It’s not as famous as the Alaska Highway, but sightings of grizzlies and cougars on the Spatzizi Plateau could spice things up. Tip: Pack plenty of bug and bear repellent.

Live at Squamish is ‘music at work’ for Tragically Hip

s a young fan, and now as a professional musician, music festivals have always had a special place in Tragically Hip bassist Gord Sinclair’s heart.

“I remember I was about 17, attending the first Police Picnic out in a farmer’s field in Oakville,” he says from his home on Kingston, Ontario. “There were The Specials, Iggy Pop and a very young Killing Joke. It was their first North American appearance and I remember we were up all night long, doing what young guys do — I was with Robbie (Baker), the guitarist on our band — and the music fires up, and these four guys clad in black leather walk out. I swear the singer had a green face — it was awesome.”

Sinclair and the Tragically Hip are headlining this year’s Live at Squamish music festival from August 24 to 26. Along with The Hip, the eclectic festival will also include City and Colour, Kathleen Edwards, The Sheepdogs and Chromeo.

“We wanted to showcase Canadian music a bit this year,” says Live at Squamish creative director Allan Regan.

“The Tragically Hip are one of the biggest Canadian bands out there and with City and Colour, you have Dallas Green — from Alexisonfire — who’s doing very well now. City and Colour is up and coming and the Tragically Hip are already there.

“We wanted to elevate the festival this year,” he adds. “What sets Live at Squamish apart from other festivals is that the lineup isn’t stereotypical. You

learn about new artists, from a lot of genres, when you attend.”

Regan says the natural aesthetics, the “electricity of the mountains and grass” of the West Coast offer an experience to attendees — and artists — that is unique to the rest of the music festival world.

“I love coming out to the West Coast,” Sinclair says. “What’s not to love? I’ve spent a lot of time out there over the years — playing professionally and personally, visiting many friends out there. It’s so beautiful and makes you feel good.”

A month after they play Live at Squamish, the Ontario band will release its 12th album, Now For Plan A. Sinclair says the album’s focus is to capture the live performance-prowess that has made The Hip so enduring over its 29-year history.

“We’ve done well selling records over the years, but it was never our bread and butter,” the 48-yearold says. “Before we ever started recording, we were touring, playing the clubs for a couple of years — it’s what we do. There’s no software package to recreate the experience of seeing a really good band play live.”

Additionally, Sinclair says that while writing and recording the new album, the band never strayed into unfamiliar sonic territory, testing new waters or attempting to reinvent themselves.

“It’s not like we made a bluegrass record or trance dance record or a collection of ringtones,” he says with a laugh. “It’s just a really good Hip record and I’m really proud of it.”

Dine al fresco with Araxi and 136 new friends

t’s not every day that you can feast in a Whistler field. In fact, the outdoor dining season coincides with the brief midsummer bloom of alpine wildflowers and retreats just as quickly. It is thus, appropriately, in a burgeoning lakeside meadow that Araxi — Whistler’s benchmark for fine dining over the past 20 years — chose to stage their second annual summer long table series.

Flavour profiles of Tofino Dungeness crab in North Arm Farm squash blossoms, smoked BC sockeye with local baby golden beets (pictured), rosemary-roasted Pemberton natural beef, and Lillooet Caribou honey with Pemberton strawberries (three ways!), complemented the personal offerings of the 136 diners conversing astride the very, very long table — an ingredient of equal import in the three-hour experience.

The initial cocktail meet-and-greet and subsequent wine pairings — the stand-out of which was the LaStella Moscato d’Osoyoos 11 — meant journalists from National Geographic were nonchalantly sharing stories with business owners from North Vancouver, the eclectic crowd hitting hive pitch within minutes.

While Walt warned Araxi patrons in his opening remarks to expect more relaxed, family-style service than the award-winning restaurant is typically known for, his team quietly took mise en place to four-star share-plates under smoky tents at the head of Rainbow Park. The resulting creations had every diner drooling in anticipa-

tion, while waiting for members of the media to take their obligatory photos. After engaging neighbours in a servingware ballet, no garnish was left unshared.

he meal began with arancini — warm mushroom-laced risotto hiding a glorious pocket of melted cheese, enrobed in a perfectly crisp golden shell, sitting in rich tomato sauce and garnished with freshly-grated parmesan and basil chiffonade. The Reuben was stuffed with house-cured spicy and juicy corned beef. The trio of macaroni and cheese was surprisingly sophisticated.

This was a meal at the NSCS Discovery Café, within Hostelling International Jericho Beach.

Found on the main floor of the hostel, behind understated signage, this is one of the best kept culinary secrets in the city. Featuring classic breakfast and lunch fare and an everchanging blackboard menu for dinner, Chef Don Guthro has already created a loyal following, not including the lucky international backpackers who have been enjoying his affordable and expertly executed meals since its opening just four months ago.

“I know there are some neighbours who come every weekend for breakfast and love that fact that we are still under the radar,” Guthro confides. “I appreciate their support, but I hope that changes soon.”

Price point and consistency aside —not to mention really good food — the café is part of a social enterprise Guthro has developed over the past four years. The Discovery is one of the revenue vehicles for the Culinary and Lifeskills Program, offered by his North Shore Culinary School, that offers cooks training to at-risk individuals from across the country, tuition-free. That’s right, for free.

“I want to make cooks training accessible to those who normally wouldn’t have this kind of op-

portunity. Unfortunately, going to cooking school across the country has become an experience very few can afford,” Guthro explains.

His students are carefully interviewed to ensure commitment and need. Once accepted into the program, each student receives books, uniform, knife kit and room and board funded by the cafe and Guthro’s catering company, Culinary Choreography. In return, they participate in fundraising and events.

The school has four different locations between Vancouver and North Vancouver, with a new campus opening this fall in North Van’s Mahon Park. Each offers students a different opportunity to hone their skills.

“I didn’t even know what a social enterprise was when I began this journey; I just started. Before I knew it, the project had taken on a life of its own,” Guthro says.

Two of the training kitchens are in a homeless shelters in Vancouver and North Vancouver where students learn the art of high-volume cooking, while feeding more than 2,000 residents each week.

Guthro is encouraged and inspired by his students, 80 per cent of whom find placements after they graduate. More often than not, through these opportunities, they are able to turn their lives around and contribute to their community.

Some even choose to stay with him and work in the kitchen at Jericho Beach, a testament to the relationships he builds.

And one bite of the tuxedo mousse chocolate cake will prove that the training he provides is world class...

he tail of this year is shaping up to be another big win for Vancouver in the food department. As per usual, there are many new and interesting eateries that are currently in various states of construction. Here are the five that you should be paying particularly close attention to...

Wildebeest | 120 Hastings | Wildebeest.ca | Opening Imminent Wildebeest is a good place to start because a) everyone is talking about it, and b) it could be open when this column goes to print.

The two-level restaurant and wine bar at 120 W. Hastings has a lot going for it. First, its owners, Josh Pape and James Iranzad, are a couple of industry lifers with very high standards. (Pape is one of Canada’s top bartenders and co-owner of The Diamond in Gastown, and Iranzad is a dedicated food and drink wonk and the owner of Abigail’s Party in Kitsilano.) Together, they’ve poured their hearts, souls, personal tastes and bank accounts into this project. Second, in charge of the kitchen is David Gunawan, the former executive chef at South Granville’s multiple award-winning West. He has designed a multitude of sharable exercises in self-indulgence for Wildebeest, all of which have me salivating (think poutine with roasted foie gras, crispy pork skin with blackberry jam, oysters with 10-year-old Ardbeg whisky, etc.). Third, it’s the new home of manager Brooke Delves (ex-Salt Tasting Room, Maenam), so good service goes without saying.

All told, it’s the most highly anticipated restaurant opening of 2012, and it is finally upon us!

Heirloom | 1509 West 12th | HeirloomRestaurant.ca | Opening Imminent The 53-year-old Primo’s Mexican Grill at the foot of South Granville’s old Douglas Lodge will very soon become Vancouver’s largest vegetarian restaurant. Heirloom, as the new joint is called, will feature a menu of small to large sharable dishes (sans faces) prepared by Georgia Morley, Chip Wilson’s former classically trained personal chef. The 100-seater has undergone a top-to-bottom renovation, and has been designed by EVOKE ID, the same company behind the looks of over a dozen Vancouver notables (eg. Union Bar, El Camino’s, Sanafir). Expect a modern but casual feel, prices under $20, and none of the pretension/politics that sometimes feels umbilically attached to vegetarian restaurants.

Beaucoup | 2150 Fir | BeaucoupBakery.com | Opening September It was a case of “tune in, turn on, and drop out” with Jackie Ellis. Her love affair with baking first led her to moonlight at Vancouver’s farmers’ markets, selling homemade layer cakes and such. The experience then steered her away from a successful, nine-year career in graphic design to a pastry school in Paris and places beyond. “My goal was to taste as much as I could,” she says. “I sought out the best pastry shops and restaurants and travelled there just to eat.” Thirty pounds later, and with passport stamps from Europe and Africa also under her belt, she now finds herself busily working on converting a warehouse space on Fir Street off West 6th into her dream bakery. Beaucoup will see a mix of treats from her childhood and modern French pastries, coffee from 49th Parallel, and brioche sandwiches employing local microgreens and meats from Oyama. Uncompromising excellence is a usual consequence of passions like hers, so expect great things when the doors first open.

Two of our top local talents, Ed Perrow and Neil Taylor, are opening a small Spanish restaurant in the heart of the West End this September. Perrow, you might remember, was the operations manager of both Bin 941 and Bin 942 for many years before helping to open La Brasserie on Davie. He’s lately of Uva Wine Bar and Cibo Trattoria in the Moda Hotel, where he found an immediate groove with Taylor, the executive chef. Espana is a bit of a departure for both, but what makes the project all the more exciting is the fact that this is the first time either has entered the ownership game. They will be serving kalimoxto, pinxtos, and tapas dishes alongside a few larger, sharable plates paired with Spanish wines and sherries, presumably to a nightly full house.

Pidgin | 350 Carrall | No Website Yet | Opening November/December The 2007 Canadian Culinary Champion, Makoto Ono, has arrived in Vancouver to build and open a new 66-seat restaurant and bar across from Pigeon Park on the Downtown Eastside. This is a major score for Vancouver food lovers. Not only is Ono the son of Sadao Ohno, the celebrated Japanese master chef/owner of the recently closed Edohei in Winnipeg (Sadao retired in February), he’s also proved himself with fierce talents of his own on the national and international stage. Some background: he flew through cooking school in Vancouver; started at the bottom at the now defunct Koji’s; staged at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Vong in New York and Marco Pierre White’s Mirabelle in the UK; and joined his father on the line in Winnipeg for several years — all before opening that city’s well-regarded Glutton’s eatery back in 2004. His success at the Canadian Culinary Championships took him to China, where he opened restaurants to critical acclaim in both Beijing and Hong Kong. This new project is his long awaited homecoming, and I suspect that he aims to blow us away. (I especially dig the name — Pidgin — which ties neatly to the location and to Ono’s expression of an amalgam of cuisines that will include French, Japanese, and Korean).

Railtown Café: Sous vide tout suite

f you’re going to feed 230 people lunch, you have to be very good at multi-tasking.

The staff at Railtown Café moves with fast and efficient ease as they custom prepare each and every lunch order of the people lining outside the newest eatery in the most western corner of Vancouver’s East End. In this way they are like piano players — while their hands are playing one note, their brains are thinking of the next one.

Multi-tasking also applies to the entire main floor of the building that houses Railtown Café. Push aside the plastic barrier at the back of the café and you step into a huge work kitchen that is the “research and development” area of Etuvé Sous Vide, a Vancouverbased food company founded by chef Ben Coté in 2002. Sous vide is a cooking process that translates into “under vacuum.” As unappetizing as the process sounds — cooking proteins such as beef or salmon in airtight bags in a warm water bath for up to 72 hours — the result is surprisingly delicious and tender.

“You need the right training because either it tastes like mush or you’re feeding people bacteria,” says Coté.

Etuvé is becoming a major supplier to restaurants who need to serve meals quickly without any loss of taste.

This is also the home of the One Planet catering company (soon to be renamed as the catering end of Railtown Café and Catering), owned by Coté and chef Tyler Day. Its sustainable approach to healthy eating includes delivery by bicycle, cloth napkins and real cutlery.

But don’t stop here. At the back of the kitchen, to the left, you walk into another dimension otherwise

But enough about the building.

Let’s get to the food. Although the chefs are fast — customers can have their lunch in their hands in a minute — this is not fast food. “It’s using the finesse of fine dining and dumbing it down to its simplest form,” says the café’s executive chef, Dan Olson, who’s returned to his home town after working at LA’s Hotel Bel Air and Four Seasons kitchens.

“Every sandwich, every salad, every drink, I want to eat myself. That’s how you know you’re eating good food,” says Day, who multi-tasks at One Planet and Railtown Café.

Everything is made from scratch, and what’s not grown in organic gardens is cooked in-house, including the bread (and a gluten-free savoury muffin.)

Although you’d think the location is too out of the way to be viable, look across the street. That building at the corner of Railway Street and Dunleavy Avenue is the worldwide headquarters of Hoot Suite. Coming up with new ways to revolutionize social media makes a person hungry and having a café right across the street is tantalizingly convenient.

Why you should support vintners and fruit growers CityCellar

I

’ve been thinking about Okanagan winemaker Rob Van Westen of Van Westen Vineyards a fair bit over the last week. Oddly enough, these thoughts have had nothing to do with his wine; they’ve actually about cherries.

You see, Rob is a third-generation Naramata farmer who not only makes award-winning estate wines from tiny parcels of land on the sunny eastern bench of Lake Okanagan, but he swaps hats regularly as a cherry farmer, producing orchards full of Lapins the size of small plums. It’s through cherries and wine, both in high-quality, superlimited small batches, that he supports his family (which includes four daughters.) They all live cozily in a modest bungalow that occupies a small footprint amidst his cherry trees and grapevines.

After his annual hiring of over a dozen farmhands to aid in the cherry harvest this year, the unexpected happened. A glut of American cherries flooded our market, resulting in the pendulum of supply and demand swinging the other way. Prices plummeted and the local co-op was unable to fairly compensate farmers for their fruit, leaving Rob and many colleagues in a tough spot.

The price they began to receive from the co-op wouldn’t even cover their labour, never mind other costs. The harvesting of this fruit had already put them in debt, being paid a mere five per cent of what they’d spent in labour alone for one week’s harvest. With tears and hugs from Rob and his wife Tammi, the workers (many hired annually, almost extended family) had to be laid off, with acres of trees still full of fruit.

Local family farmers like the Van Westens simply cannot compete with larger-scale industrial American subsidized farming, where workers in much less optimal conditions get $1.25 per bucket picked, when we’re paying more than twice that rate for labour on this side of the border, a far more reasonable living wage.

and Rob did what they could harvest-wise, as time permitted. After all, they couldn’t ignore the tending of grapes that will provide income. While selling to roadside stands and friends has helped, only an eighth of their fruit will be harvested this year.

Rob and his family have always been great to me ever since I was first acquainted (and enamoured) with their wines. While managing Gastown’s Salt Tasting Room, I’d done a distance-learning winemaking course from UC Davis. To allow us a little hands-on experience, Rob was more than happy to have a colleague and I get in the way in his winery for a couple days, taking the time during a very busy harvest to show us as many tricks of the trade as he could. He and Tammi also let us crash at their place, fed us and kept the wine and laughter flowing. They’re well-steeped in their community, ridiculously humble and as salt-of-the-earth as you can get. Anyone in Naramata will light up when asked about them, sharing stories of them being amazing friends and neighbours. The Van Westen Winery isn’t fancy; it’s a working (almost ‘garage’) winery. When you visit, and you should, you’ll be charmed by their hospitality, humour and warmth.

As their four-year-old daughter Olivia likely munches on grapes while climbing on some old barrels out front, you’ll be suitably impressed as you sip Rob’s 2010 Viognier (orange blossom and honey, $24.99,) 2010 Vino Grigio (pear and citrus, $18.90) and 2010 Vivacious (a Pinot Blanc-based blend loaded with Granny Smith apple, $18.90.)

They’re all lively, aromatic, pure expressions of the fruit from which they’re made. He makes some reds as well, at the opposite end of the spectrum, dark and chewy, usually with a heavy lashing of tannins.

The one I’m attracted to is his 2008 Vrankenstein, a 1.5-litre magnum Cabernet Franc ($110) named in homage to its annual October 31 harvest date. Ten dollars from every bottle sold goes to Children’s Hospital, because that’s just the kind of people they are. What’s fresh at the farmers market: Zucchini

ucchini, along with its summer squash cousins — the flying saucer-shaped patty pan and the bright yellow crook-necked squash — can all be used interchangeably.

They rarely need to be peeled and, once grated, are a quick and easy addition to frittattas, omelettes or risotto. With stems trimmed and cut lenthwise ¼to ½-inch thick, drizzled in oil and seasoned, they grill exceptionally well and make a great sandwich with fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil. Sauteed up with bacon and onions they make a savoury side dish for any meal of the day.

To save zucchini for later, just grate it, put in Ziploc bags, flatten and store in the freezer. Thawing isn’t even necessary when adding to soup or pasta sauce but let it sit in a colander until room temperature before adding to a quick bread recipe.

As there is more than enough zucchini this time of year, and never enough chocolate chip cookies ever, this recipe works to bring harmony and balance to the world once again.

ZUCCHINI CHOCOLATE CHIPPERS Set oven to 350º.

Cream together until softened: ½ cup unsalted butter ¾ organic cane sugar Add and beat well: 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla In a separate bowl combine: 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt With mixer on low, gradually add the flour mixture until well mixed.

Turn off mixer and add: 1 cup shredded unpeeled zucchini 1 cup chocolate chips Mix well with a wooden spoon until just combined.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto parchment lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart and flatten slightly with the back of a spoon. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden. Once out of the oven, let cool for 5 minutes on the pan (a trick to ensure a crisp bottom) then transfer to a cooling rack.

worth or showing up the bride at a boat wedding. I have to say, though, we don’t live in a city where you need to do that in order to gain attention, and it’s a beautiful thing.

When it comes to high fashion, no one’s going to confuse us (or our fashion weeks) with New York or London, but unlike other big cities, we’re not trying to be. Anyone who went to Beirut at the Orpheum in July can attest that the babes in this city know exactly what they’re doing. I’ve been to a lot of shows in a lot of cities, and never have I seen so many stone foxes in one room. High-waist shorts, summer dresses and ‘who cares what decade this is, I look gooood’ headbands as far as the eye could see. And the eye went far.

Worst dressed city? Not a chance.

Maybe the next time MSN Travel sends someone to Vancouver, they’ll let me be a tour guide, because I can’t believe there would be a sequel to that denouncement. Whatever sartorial illusions their next ranking decides to shatter, I want to say thank you, women of Vancouver. Only you could make the most scenic city on the continent even prettier.

And since an article like this wouldn’t be complete without a top five list, here are my favourite things I’ve seen women wearing this summer: • Loose tanks – so hot, and so many ways to rock them.

• Cheap shades – be reliably capricious. If you forget them at the beach it doesn’t matter.

• High-waisted shorts – two words: hips, buns.

• Long skirts – the breezier the better.

• A smile – I know, so cheesy. But it’s true.

Quick disclaimer – this isn’t a fashion column, and in no way am I an expert in your manner of dress. That said, I’m a single, successful, straight man living in this city, so I like to think my opinion counts for something. And I speak for a great number of my fellow bachelors when I say please, keep doing what you’re doing.

MSN Travel’s article in September 2011 (sorry to bring it up), the one dubbing Vancouver one of the three worst dressed cities in the world because of your yoga-pants laziness, was probably fair. But this isn’t a rebuttal as much as it is an update.

I realize not all of you bought into the Lulu madness. I’m fortunate enough to spend time around a number of women who always look great, including a journalist at this paper, so this isn’t a catchall (I’d like to continue writing articles). Still, collectively, you blew it. Now let’s move on.

The best thing about women in Vancouver is that we can never tell how you arrived at a party. You may have come from a business lunch or a beach blanket, on a bike or in a cab. You may have come from a serving job or a newspaper desk, but you’re ready for anything. You consistently embrace what makes you attractive — flexibility. And, no, not like that (...yes, like that).

Lulus were fun for a while, but we’ll have our ideas no matter what you’re wearing, so thank you for giving us our imagination back. Figure flaunting Lycra?

Not necessary. We know this city has everything you could want to maintain a tight body, and to quote my British boss, the birds in this city are ‘epically fit’ as a result.

Trust us, we don’t forget.

Queer Film Fest: Never take today’s progress for granted

By Gen Handley What is one characteristic that makes queer and gay films unique?

“I think if I were to name one thing that they all have in common, it would be that we don’t take our stories for granted,” says Amber Dawn, director of programming for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. “Historically and in the present day, our stories, locally and in Canada, are under-told. And globally, not only are they under-told, but there might be a risk in telling them.”

Thankfully, these stories will get to be told at the 24th annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival taking place from August 16 to 26. Under the theme of “lovers and fighters,” the festival will showcase films that look at the two sides of the LGBTQ community.

“We really want to celebrate that there are two major components to queer film and to our festival,” Dawn explains. “There are queer relationships, sexuality and families — so that’s the lovers side of things.

And then the fighters side would be our philanthropic side, the part of us that’s still looking at human rights issues — anything from marriage equality to queer refugees seeking safe passage to queer-friendly countries like Canada.”

Queer Film Fest celebrates both the movies themselves and the struggle that made them possible, says Dawn Amber. film community, with 75 films from 16 different countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Ecuador — a country that Dawn says she has never seen produce a queer film before.

“There are definitely more films coming out each year and more money’s being put into them,” she says. “There are countries that have a tradition of releasing queer films, such as Germany, but then you start to see films coming out of countries that don’t have that tradition — such as Ecuador and Taiwan.”

Not only is the festival an opportunity for global filmmakers to show their films to an audience, it is an opportunity for local filmmakers to tell their stories as well.

“I had my very first screening at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival back in1995,” Dawn says. “We continue to be a place where Vancouver artists can show their films to an audience for the very first time – that’s something we’re deeply honoured to do.”

Coast is Queer gives voice to many ways to love

W

hat do you love about being queer?

It’s a very simple question that evokes both blushes and profound thoughts in Vivek Shraya’s film by the same name.

It’s one of the 15 made-in-BC short films that make up The Coast is Queer (August at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (August 16 to 26.)

Here are some of the answers (other than “the obvious,” as one woman says with a sly smile...): • “No one teaches you how to be queer. You have to actually take a moment and think about how

you’re going to love somebody and how that’s going to work in a world that’s straight.”

• “There are no rules.”

• “You do not mess with us. In a second, people come together to build coalitions and fight together. I never try and remove myself from the fact that many people have profoundly struggled and the queer community has pushed the boundaries for me to live the life I want to live.”

• “It’s a nice word. Say it. Queer. It just feels nice in your mouth.”

Pint-sized horror freak made to learn a few lessons, unfortunately PARANORMAN Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi Directed by Chris Butler, Sam Fell When Laika, an upstart stop-motion animation studio, created their first feature a few years back, they made certain that they had a solid foundation in place by adapting Neil Gaiman’s award-winning novel, Coraline. This follow-up sees the studio continuing in the same creepy vein but it’s spawned from an original script from debut screenwriter Chris Butler (who shared directing duties with Sam Fell).

And while ParaNorman’s 3D animation is consistently charming and inventive, its story is as rickety as the skeletal zombies that populate the film.

The early scenes of Butler and Fell’s film serve to familiarize us with tweenaged Norman’s (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee) unhealthy fixation with the undead. When not watching horror flicks, he’s wander-

ing around his hometown of Blithe Hollow, offering salutations to disembodied spirits that only he can see. Learning of “the witch’s curse” that’s destined to unleash supernatural mayhem onto the sleepy town’s streets, Norman and his best friend (Tucker Albrizzi) assemble a Scooby Doo-style team of ghostbusters and race against the clock to keep all hell from breaking loose.

Of course, as the pint-sized horror freak encounters a more corporeal strain of the undead, he learns that things aren’t always as cut-and-dried as they are in his favourite good vs. evil gore fests. In revealing the truth behind the curse, Butler and Fell steer their farcical film into more serious – read: sermonizing – territory. Unfortunately, its graceless anti-bullying message is a little tough to swallow considering the tame gags we’ve had shoved down our throats up to that point. Consequently, this oddball confection leaves a bit of a bad aftertaste. — Curtis Woloschuk

Once again, the multi –faceted star (she also co-wrote the movie) takes the lead role as Marion but she has since separated from Adam Goldberg’s Jack (though he is referred to) and is now shacked up with talk radio host Mingus (Chris Rock) in the Big Apple.

Everything appears picture perfect until Marion’s dad (played once again by her real father Albert Delpy), sister and her boyfriend drop in for a family visit; soon enough, chaos and hilarity ensue.

the sometimes acerbic observations of Goldberg’s cynical Jack from the first one. Rock brings a breath of fresh air to this installment, never going too far over the top while still preserving his comic roots. Delpy herself proves once again to be a formidable actress, seamlessly moving from English to French conversations with Thor Diakow a distinct and subtle sexiness. The real star, however, is her father who dishes up a delightfully quirky blend of inappropriate jokes and general zaniness. The editing is frantic in sections and, although it can be jarring at times, adds to the comic madness of the character interactions.

In the end, 2 Days in New York almost unravels due to a sappy ending but the razor sharp script and charming performances keep the film afloat.

Angel With a Bullet isn’t quite a dÊbut novel Black Press

H

ow much time should you dedicate to a dream before giving up? For author Grant McKenzie, the answer is never.

The first draft of McKenzie’s debut mystery in the new Dixie Flynn series, Angel With A Bullet, was written 22 years ago. And on Sep. 8, it will arrive in bookstores from publisher Midnight Ink for the very first time.

However, unlike his previous novels, this one is under his pen name, M.C. Grant. “I was 26 when I decided I needed to take a leave of absence from my newspaper job and write that first novel,� says McKenzie, editor of WE Vancouver’s sister paper in Victoria, Monday Magazine. “I needed to prove to myself that I could take an interesting idea and flesh it out into a novel-length story with characters that I cared about. If I could do that, I knew it would become the stepping stone to reaching my dream of being a published author.�

After completing several drafts of the novel on his electric typewriter — “a nice step-up from my trusty portable manual that I had been using since I was a teenager� — he was, alas, not able to find an agent.

McKenzie returned to the newspaper business where he was a columnist, editor, and page designer for a major daily in Canada.

But while he worked nights putting out the daily news, he never gave up writing fiction. In 2000, he published his first youngadult book, Avalanche on the Prairie, with a small press in Canada.

And then in 2009, he published the first of three thrillers under

his given name of Grant McKenzie. The first of those thrillers, Switch, has been published in the U.S., Canada, UK, Germany and Taiwan, and is due out in Russia later this year. “But I always had a soft spot for that first novel,� says Grant. “The characters are just so much fun, and I love how the dark edge of the plot is interwoven with humor.�

Deciding to update his old typewritten manuscript, McKenzie rewrote the book as Angel With A Bullet and sold it to Midnight Ink within three weeks of completion. “Mystery lovers are really going to enjoy this series. I pitched it to Midnight Ink as ‘Janet Evanovich meets John Sandford in a dark alley.’ It has humour, danger, action and even a dash or romance.�

Grant decided to go with a pen name for this series because Angel With A Bullet is written in firstperson-female perspective so that the reader experiences the mystery through the eyes of the story’s protagonist, Dixie Flynn. “Dixie is a wise-cracking investigative reporter for an alternative weekly in San Francisco who hides behind a tough exterior, but exposes her heart in her writing,� says McKenzie. “She also likes to envision ex-boyfriends leaping over her bed at night to help her fall asleep. And wait until you meet her neighbours.�

As a teaser, Midnight Ink has released Grant’s original and darkly humorous short story Underbelly as a free eB ook, which also contains the opening chapters to Angel With A Bullet. It’s available on Amazon now.

The truth about 9/11 The truther’s tent was out again this weekend in front of the art gallery to dispense the inside knowledge that 9/11 was a false flag operation by the U.S. government to start a war in the Middle East and on and on and on. I do like when people are passionate about a cause. Their world has been made better by motivated individuals who support a cause, bringing it to the attention of others. The truthers, however articulate and or smart they may be, are so egotistical by asserting that their version of what happened is the truth over all experts and commissions that studied 9/11. So unsatisfied with the actual truth, so unwilling to except the reality of what happened on 9/11, they have chosen to construct a reality to fit their own predefined view of the world.

Facts that conform to their story are repeated and spewed out and other contrary evidence is ignored or decided to be sourced by those in on the conspiracy. Stories of people directly involved in the incident are not enough and scores of expert reports that explain away all their questions about what happened can not stand in the way of their self satisfying quest to bring the “truth” to light. But it all reeks of arrogance and fulfillment of some kind of online social fantasy. If only they could feel as passionate about what’s happening in Syria, The Congo or that stupid pipeline right here in BC. Brian, via email

A choice not to beat you up This rant is to the four slightly drunk morons who entered the Two Parrots pub on Friday evening and, after offering me the rest of their beer, called me a 'faggot' when I told them that I don't drink alcohol. I have high-functioning autism and I've had to put up with this kind of name calling and teasing and other bullshit all of my life. You can't imagine how many times I've wanted to break every bone in some people's bodies. However, the choices that I've made have allowed me to earn a great reputation as a volunteer in the community, hold down paying jobs in which I've worked my way off disability benefits. All of those benefits could disappear I if ever made the choice to join the Vancouver Club of Mean and Selfish Assholes which you and many other idiots belong to by beating the crap out of you all, then getting arrested by the police only to have a criminal record. None of you are worth losing everything that I've worked for and of which I and my friends are very proud of. But be warned — should you ever insult, ridicule or bully someone else with nothing to lose you might soon realize just what it's like to be a victim so do choose your battles very carefully, for it might be your last.

Local girl wins gold at makeup Olympics Makeup professionals around the world recently had their own Olympics, with eyes and airbrushes turned to the International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) at the Vancouver Convention Centre at the end of July. The Blanche Macdonald school of makeup once again earned gold when recent Vancouver graduate Catlyn Jeong took home first place in the ‘Battle of the Brushes’ student competition in the fantasy/beauty category. Building on the theme ‘Wild Kingdom’, the eight selected contestants had three hours to create their looks from scratch before being judged by a group of high-profile industry professionals. Catlyn took her inspiration from the clown fish, impressing the judges by integrating its distinctive patterning in her model’s eyes and lashes, while applying detailed body painting by hand. The IMATS events are the world’s largest gathering of make-up professionals, held annually in six cities worldwide: London, New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Sydney and Toronto. Locally owned and independent, the Blanche Macdonald Centre now boasts three Vancouver campuses, including the newly opened CurliQue Beauty Boutique downtown.

One step closer to SkyTrain fare gates Monday, Aug. 13 at 2:30pm marked the installation of the first TransLink fare gate at the Marine Drive SkyTrain station at Cambie.
