Heliport plans progressing CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter
Happy Halloween! Mika and Odessa O’Donnell were two little ladybirds at the Boundary Child Care Resource and Referral’s Halloween Howl last Thursday with about 75 children in attendance. The Halloween party event featured healthy snacks and has been occurring for over 15 years. More Halloween pictures on page 15. The City of Grand Forks city council has agreed to send a letter to Transport Canada in support of the construction of a heliport at the Boundary Hospital property. Council received a request to support the proposal from the Interior Health Authority (IHA) on Oct. 22. Airport manager Wayne Kopan explained in a letter addressed to the mayor and council that the heliport is compatible with the existing site behind the Boundary Hospital and is open to any potential expansion. “The constructed heliport will not impact any future municipal development in the immediate vicinity of the Boundary Hospital,” he said. Ingrid Hampf, acute area Director Kootenay Boundary at IHA, told the Gazette that the heliport would be a great benefit for critical patients when it’s completed. “We are currently talking to consultants about the site, and they have started with the surveys and geotechnical assessment,” she said. “We will have the final design phase completed by mid-to-late December, and expect the tendering to go out between January and February.” Hampf stated that depending on ground conditions and the weather, groundwork should begin in the spring. “We expect that it should be completed by early summer once we have Transport Canada certification,” she said. Jeff Olsen, unit chief for Grand Forks Ambulance Services, is looking forward to the helipad. “We’re anticipating it being built
and we would certainly use it,” he said. “We’re currently using the grass instead right now, which isn’t the best option. There is the new helipad at Kelowna General Hospital that we can get to an hour, so we’re looking forward to it.” Olsen is referring to the new wing at the Kelowna hospital that has a heliport built on its roof for emergencies. Mayor Brian Taylor noted that the heliport project has been discussed for many years. “The city gave its approval to Transport Canada, so it’s a big improvement in moving patients to where they can get the best care,” he said. “Interior Health may ask the city to co-operate with them in helping to clear the snow, and the city wants to co-operate as much as possible to make this happen.” Taylor explained that helicopters have limited ability to operate in the dark and inclement weather, so there are some restrictions on helicopter transport. “They’ve already been landing there so there shouldn’t been too much construction that would occur, aside from setting the pad, paving and making a safe landing area,” Taylor added. Last May, IHA announced that Grand Forks’ Boundary Hospital would have a heliport built. IHA explained that the new heliport would be utilized by Kamloops-based emergency helicopter BC Ambulance Services to serve B.C. Southern Interior residents and that the heliport would assist in quicker response times for emergencies. Construction of the heliport is possible thanks to donations from the Clifton family, which has donated a total of $150,000 to Boundary Hospital.

Cimba
This is Cimba. Cimba was brought to us when he was just a day old by our dog Cliff, who found him abandoned in the woods with little hope for survival. While we humans took turns bottle feeding, Cliff looked after bathing and grooming and was attentive to Cimba’s every little meow. Cliff would alert us when Cimba woke up, needed feeding, or was just being fussy and he spent much of his day guarding over “his” kitten. As Cimba grew I’m sure Cliff sometimes wished he could return the menacing little fur ball back to the woods, and he would often look at us with pleading eyes as if to say “please don’t let him hurt me”. That was three years ago. Cimba has since grown to be a very handsome and affectionate cat who loves cuddles and being groomed.

Woman dies in accident near Beaverdell KARL YU Gazette Editor
Sharlene Gayle Johnston, a 46-year-old woman from Grand Forks, was killed in an accident south of Beaverdell on Thursday (Oct. 25). According to Sgt. Derrick Donovan of RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services, the incident occurred at 7:30 p.m. on Highway 33, about three kilometres south of Beaverdell. “It involved a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass car,” Donovan explained. “It was just one occupant. The driver left the road on the right side and went down an embankment.” Johnston succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Donovan said that the roads were clear but “we’re looking at the normal mechanical on the vehicle and we had our expert out there as well that will give us an approximate speed. So at this time I can’t confirm anything but I can say the roads were clear and it doesn’t appear to be a factor as far as the road conditions,” he said. Donovan said that RCMP would be forwarding its findings to the BC Coroners Service, which continues to investigate the incident. According to the coroner’s service, Johnston’s family has been notified. Numerous thefts from motor vehicles • There was a theft from a motor vehicle reported at 11:20 a.m. on Oct. 22 regarding a spare tire being stolen from the back of a motorhome. According to Grand Forks RCMP’s Cpl. Richard Lanz, the vehicle was parked on Central Avenue. “The tire was later located in the alley a short distance away and at this time there are no suspects in this matter,” explained Lanz. • On Oct. 24 at 6:30 a.m., there was a report of a wallet theft from a vehicle that was parked on 75th Avenue in Grand Forks. “The vehicle was left unlocked and the theft occurred sometime overnight,” said Lanz. “Also stolen from the vehicle was a small amount cash, an MP3 player and a (global positioning system).” There are no suspects in this incident. • Also on Oct. 24 at 9:34 a.m., there was a report of a theft from a vehicle that was parked on 2nd Street. Gift cards and a small army knife were taken. • On Oct. 25, at 9:11 a.m., police received a call about yet another theft from a vehicle. The

vehicle was parked on 11th Street and the theft is believed to have occurred sometime overnight – the vehicle was left unlocked and no damage was reported to the vehicle. “A Nikon camera was stolen along with a pair of sunglasses and a small amount of change,” said Lanz. Freezer theft at Christina Lake On Oct. 27, at 8:29 a.m., there was a report from a resident at Christina Lake that their shed had been broken into sometime overnight. Someone went into their freezer and stole ice cream, meat and cookies; Lanz said the value of the goods stolen was approximately $50. The matter is still being investigated. Lumber theft That same day at 10:22 p.m. a call was received that sometime overnight someone had entered the Rona lumberyard and was starting to remove patio stones and wood decking and Lanz said at this time, the matter is still being investigated. Charges pending in bicycle theft On Oct. 25, at 3:45 p.m., there was a report of a bike theft. The theft occurred on Oct. 19, sometime over the evening hours. “Since that time, the bicycle has been located and returned to the owner,” said Lanz. “Charges are pending in this matter.” Irrigation concerns after vehicle makes mess on field On Oct. 28 at 1:52 p.m., police were called to a residence on Carson Road after an unknown vehicle had driven through a field and made a mess. “The complainant was concerned as there is built-in irrigation lines in the field,” Lanz explained. Van hits elk Also on Oct. 28 at 8:10 p.m., was a report of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 3 outside of Christina Lake with a grey Dodge van running into an elk. “The driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid it. There were minor injuries to the passenger and the vehicle was not drivable due to the collision,” Lanz said. The owner of the vehicle was from Vancouver. Greyhound cutting services CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter
Greyhound Canada Transportation bus services may be reduced or eliminated to Grand Forks, Greenwood and Midway by the end of this year. An application was submitted to the B.C. Passenger Board on Oct. 3 by Greyhound to reduce the minimum frequency of routes throughout British Columbia. Grant Odsen, regional manager for passenger services for Greyhound, explained that this was due to the reduced numbers of passengers who have been using the services. “The service right now is that there’s one trip operating seven days a week for each direction and there’s another trip that runs three days a week in each direction,” he explained. The service cuts are the result of a $14.1 million loss between March 2011 and March 2012 for operations in the province. The application notes that higher fuel and maintenance costs, reduced numbers of ridership, and unregulated competition from provincial agencies like BC Transit as part of the reason. “The proposal before the B.C. Transportation Board is to reduce the services for the three-days-aweek trip, which would leave the one trip in each direction seven days a week.” Grand Forks has two daily trips
seven days a week, one going eastbound and the other westbound. The bus heading eastbound leaves Grand Forks at 4:30 p.m., while the one heading westbound leaves at 11:30 a.m. There is also a bus that leaves eastbound at 3 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and a westbound bus that leaves at 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The proposal is to remove the 3 a.m. eastbound and 8:40 p.m. westbound routes. “That eastbound schedule has an average load of 12.1 people and that’s calculated over the whole trip from Kelowna to Calgary,” said Odsen. “The westbound trip to Vancouver has a load of 11.3 (people on average).” Odsen noted that there are 15 routes around the province that Greyhound is looking to reduce frequency of routes on. In Greenwood, buses would run from a minimum of 10 per week, to a minimum of seven per week, with at least one trip each way per day. The Village of Midway council recently voted to send a letter to B.C. Passenger Transportation Board opposing the application and Grand Forks’ city council passed a motion to make a similar move. To view Greyhound’s application to B.C. Passenger Transportation, visit www.greyhound.ca/ServiceAlerts/Default.aspx. For more information or questions, contact the B.C. Passenger Board at 250-953-3777.

❚ Our View
Nothing wrong with ‘quake preparedness Stories of Hurricane Sandy led many news programs over the past couple of days and likewise for stories of the earthquake that struck Haida Gwaii and other coastal regions of British Columbia. The quake that hit Saturday night measured 7.7, prompting tsunami warnings and scaring many that were affected. The B.C. government has been criticized for the slow response time, with some reports suggesting that provincial emergency officials took too long to release a tsunami advisory – some reports suggest it took close to 40 minutes. Unacceptable to say the least. B.C.’s Attorney General Shirley Bond expressed relief that there were no reported injuries and said the incident gives the province a chance to improve. Of course, there were no reports of people in the Kootenay-Boundary area and Grand Forks feeling any tremors but that doesn’t mean that local officials shouldn’t have a plan in place. While an earthquake on the coastal region of B.C. is expected, there have been some occurrences in places not necessarily associated with a quake. England had an earthquake in 2008, a 5.8 magnitude quake hit the state of Virginia in Aug. of 2011 and was felt in Toronto, Ont., and earlier this month, there was even an earthquake in Montreal, Que. Before people begin to say, “An earthquake would never happen here,” remember that on Nov. 18, an earthquake that was centered in the state of Washington was felt in Rock Creek, Osoyoos, Kelowna, Penticton and here in Grand Forks. Granted, it was only a magnitude 4.3 quake and there wasn’t any damage done to the city but it serves as a reminder that people might not be as immune as they think they are. Ironically, an earthquake preparedness event took place in parts of the province this past Oct. 18, The Great British Columbia ShakeOut. There was little to no fanfare leading up to the event locally but maybe more attention should be paid. An earthquake seismologist told the Gazette last year that Canada is a seismically active country and as witnessed many times, earthquakes can happen at any time, so it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Saying goodbye is never easy when the people around you mean so much. As I get ready to leave the Grand Forks Gazette and pursue another opportunity, preparing my office for a new occupant has become an amazing tour through the years I worked here. I have spent the last couple weeks trying to organize and sort out piles of files, desk drawers that rarely see the light of day and the dreaded “pending projects” folder that, in a fit of organizational mania, I actually thought might be a good idea. Many old notes, photographs, and pieces of paperwork have sparked a burst of laughter as it reminded me just how much joy can be found with such a remarkable group of people.

JACKIE METCALFE
From the staff in the local office, past and present, to the advertisers who it is our privilege to deal with each day, local residents with great story ideas, all the people who come to pick up their paper each week, and share a story or a smile the list goes on. If only I had the patience to scrapbook! I remember all the fun we had together, the spirit with which we worked long hours to meet deadlines, that sense of relief when the paper gets here every Wednesday and that wonderful pause that briefly
happens before it starts all over again. So I sit here with my cardboard box filling up with pictures of my children, that set of work runners (I often thought of going for walks during my lunch break but actually going for lunch with someone always seemed more appealing at the time), my coffee cup and my favourite issues of the Gazette and Route 3 magazine. I guess at some point this week, I’ll have to take it home. I have enjoyed the adventure that this place has taken me on; I truly believe that the journey is so much more important than the destination. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride and want to thank everyone here and express how grateful I am for the opportunity to have worked alongside all of you.

LETTERS ❚ FALL FAIR
Thanks for support Editor: Re: It’s time the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair had a permanent home. Online poll, week of Oct. 17. It was great to read in last week’s Grand Forks Gazette the overwhelming response from the public in the weekly poll. Seventy-nine per cent of you feel that the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair deserve to have a permanent home. With this year’s fair being the best in years, the committee for the fall fair is moving into 2013 with great expectations and new ideas. However, once again, we need you, the residents of this great community to come together and give some of your time to make this happen. The annual general meeting of the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. It will be upstairs of the Station Pub on Donaldson Drive. We would love your input, ideas and your enthusiasm for a successful fair for all to enjoy. See you there! Kelly Gilmore, secretary Fall fair committee
❚ ANIMAL WELFARE
Reports of cruelty are untrue Editor: Re: Preventing animals from suffering (letter, Oct. 17 issue of the Grand Forks Gazette) Gazette) We don’t know you (letter writer) or you us. Take the time to call and talk to us. The horses all have access to water 24-7. They do not have access to the river, they have shelter and trees to go under if they like, but most don’t. As far as their feed, they are fed on a regular basis and as for quality, if it isn’t up to you or anyone else’s standards, feel free to contact the local farmers, as most of it is purchased locally and it is not moldy. If you knew anything about horses, you would know you can’t feed “black moldy hay” as it is toxic and will kill them. You also can’t feed top quality hay to a lot of these horses as it will cause them colic and possibly die. As far as thin horses go, we receive them in poor condition and feed them and make them re-homeable. A lot of those
horses come in mid-winter/ early spring, as people don’t have enough hay, run out and hope for early grass. It takes a matter of weeks for a horse to drop all its weight but months to put it back on. This is where we get caught in the middle, dealing with problems that others created. Every year, we save and re-home 80 to 100 horses. How many of you critics can say that? Our land is in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), and can only be used for farming. If anyone out there doesn’t like that fact, too bad. We will continue to use it as such. If you are concerned about animals and environment, by all means, bring money, buy a horse, heck, buy the entire property. Make a nice park or whatever you like but until that day comes, we will continue to farm as usual. The LaFonds, Grand Forks
❚ FAMILY HISTORY
Kudos to Boundary Museum for all the help Editor: I am writing to express my gratitude and appreciation for all of the assistance I received from the Boundary Museum and archives with a special thank you to Sue Adrain for all the help she gave me to complete a very special family project. This is probably a unique approach to recording a family’s history, as it is not done chronologically, but is told through pictures, archival information and stories. Central to the story are two Grand Forks families (Frank Miller, mayor of Grand Forks, and George McParlon, forest ranger for the District of Grand Forks), both my grandfathers. The story spans five generations of males and four topics: elected representatives, war heroes, firefighters and hockey players. I was thrilled to find out about the Boundary Museum and archives through my sister Sandy, who has done a great deal of recording of family history. Sue helped me find pictures I did not have, and information about my family that I did not know, and that added greatly to the Miller/McParlon story. The family album I am creating will be shared with my family (children and grandchildren) on Nov. 11, when
❚ OPINION we have a life celebration for my mother, Elaine Miller (nee McParlon). I know that we will have a greater understanding of our family history and a greater appreciation of their many contributions to their community and their country. When the album is complete I am sending a link to Sue so it can be viewed on my website. I am also planning to send a copy of the album to the museum. It might inspire and motivate other families to create their own story. My interest and excitement to do it for my family was greatly influenced by the information and the help I got from the museum and archives. Maureen Hemphill, Winnipeg, Man Man..
❚ FEDERAL POLITICS
Opposition to deal with China Editor: I am a simple struggling Canadian, living in beautiful British Columbia. I have travelled this wonderful land from coast to coast. I am proud to call myself Canadian. I am thrilled to be part of a country that has freedom and choice as to how we live. I enjoy supporting all things that embrace a future for our planet, sustainably, environmentally. However, I am exceedingly concerned about pending trade agreements and this country’s future, its democracy, environment, economy, natural resources and energy. I have received disturbing reports about pending agreements that have not been made public to Canadians, are not being debated and reviewed but instead are being pushed through behind closed doors. Is this democracy? I ask you, implore you, from my heart, to join the call to postpone ratification of the Canada-China Foreign Investment Agreement (FIPA), to support further study, a complete disclosure to the Canadian public, and full democratic debate and procedure in the House of Commons. Please support the motion that was presented by Don Davies (on Oct. 25) to conduct a full study on this treaty. This country, my home, is not for sale. Neither is British Columbia and its beautiful mountains, rivers, coastline, and natural life on land and in the oceans. What are we leaving the children, seven generations hence? What are we doing to ensure a healthy life for all? Where is the balance? Where is the heart? In gratitude. Rosemary Phillips, Christina Lake
Reasons RDKB Area C leaving BEDC Throw a group of economists into a room and see if they agree. It will never happen. The question is “what is the definition of economic GRACE McGREGOR development for your community?” I understand that a discussion on the makeup of the Boundary Economic Development Committee (BEDC) took place at a Grand Forks city council meeting and a comment was passed that Christina Lake is the only area that is no longer a partner in the Boundary economic development service. The following is only meant to offer clarification as to why Christina Lake is no longer part of the BEDC. For the past seven years I have talked the regional talk, walked the regional walk and truly believed we could make it better through a regional approach. Although I still believe there are issues we can partner on, for the most part it hasn’t worked for Christina Lake. The Lake has different issues and challenges; let’s look at what those are, what it needs and what it pays to play. Christina Lake is a community of 1,400 year-round residents; summer population is an additional 6,000 to 8,000 more. What’s the attraction? We know that 6,000 to 8,000 come to Christina Lake each summer. My sense is we can also assume that those tourists also visit the Boundary area. Do we think that those people come because the streets of Grand Forks are inviting or the shopping is really good? Do they come because Greenwood is cute and has good water? Do they come to Midway because it is closer to Kelowna? Is RDKB Area D fighting the same issues as Area C? Is Area C the same agriculture centre that Area D is? Does Area E with Big White, and especially Big White as a seasonal community, have similar problems to overcome? I believe they do. Do the tourists to Christina Lake come every summer because of Christina Lake and its warm water and the Christina Lake Golf Club, which is known as one of the most beautiful courses around with affordable green fees? The similarities I see here are mostly with Big White; however, we have been unable to connect so far. Now throw in the fact that the volunteers at Christina Lake are tired, the community has no industry to offset taxation and milfoil is a huge threat to the only economic driver we have, which is tourism. Who regionally helps pay for a $300,000 milfoil service to protect the health of the lake that entices those extra tourists to our area every year? No one, just Christina Lake. Regional partnerships anyone? Then if we look at how shared services work and the dollars that make up those services, that are based on assessments, this is the picture for the BEDC regional service in 2011, when we were all partners: Grand Forks $28,246; Midway $4,938 Greenwood $3,345; Area D $21,277; Area E $53,721 and Area C Christina Lake $33,346. Although it’s warm and fuzzy to talk about playing “regionally elected officials are answerable to those who elect them,” communities need to see and feel the reward of that partnership. The reason that Christina Lake is no longer a partner in the BEDC service is one of dollars best spent. We need to help our volunteers, find ways to offset taxation, encourage families to move to Christina Lake, continue to protect our lake and capitalize on the very things we have that the other areas don’t have, namely a beautiful community hall, a welcome centre that takes a backseat to none, a solar aquatic system and of course the lake and golf course. This is the path we have chosen to follow; we have hired our own community co-ordinator to work on all of the above identified issues. Can we find some projects to work on regionally? I am convinced we can and we will. Having said all that, although I still believe in regional thinking I need to be able to justify the dollars spent. – Grace McGregor is RDKB Area C director

❚ CITY COUNCIL
Concerns about bears and bins KARL YU Gazette Editor
The Grand Forks city council meeting that took place on Oct. 22 began with outgoing city chief administrative officer (CAO) Lynne Burch receiving recognition for her 25 years of service. Burch’s last day of work will be tomorrow (Nov. 1) and will be succeeded by Doug Allin. Bears and green bins The City of Grand Forks’ green bin food scraps program is underway and there was discussion during the primary meeting regarding feedback from area residents. Mayor Brian Taylor said he had heard mixed reaction, with the one complaint relating to green bins being interfered with when they are placed out the night before. There were some concerns with bears tampering with the bins as well (see page 16 for more). Coun. Bob Kendel said he had been approached by two residents saying that bears had destroyed the bins and Allin said that there was only one complaint of a bear attacking a can to try to get into it. A question was asked about whether residents had to replace bins that had been damaged by bears and city staff said that it would be covered through the program.
Council rep for Habitat for Humanity During the regular meeting, Coun. Michael Wirischagin asked if council had any qualms about if he could act as liaison to Habitat for Humanity Boundary. “If you’d like to take that on, I’d like to endorse it,” Taylor said. Online courses Wirischagin also made a motion, asking for permission to take two online courses – municipal law and community and citizen engagement – from Dalhousie University in the spring to the tune of $1,690. Taylor said that it would be part of the upcoming budget discussion. Wirischagin said that the reason he was asking now, as opposed to budget time, was that while the deadline passed, there were still two spots left. He also said that the particular courses are offered every two years. Kendel said he was all for furthering education but worried about setting precedent if something were approved at the Oct. 22 meeting and Coun. Neil Krog expressed concern about the fact that Dalhousie was located in Nova Scotia. “Obviously, the interaction with community course I think, would be an awesome asset but I just wasn’t sure about that municipal law course because it’s Halifax and we’re in British Columbia and our municipal laws are

unique to us,” opined Krog. Wirischagin said that similar courses were offered at other post secondary institutions but they were six-day courses that would require him to be in-house, so the online course would be cheapest. Mayor Taylor asked if council supported Wirischagin taking the two courses and the motion carried. Greyhound Greyhound Canada also made an announcement recently that it would be cutting down services to Grand Forks. Council voted on a resolution to draft a letter expressing the city’s concern at the move and it passed (see page 3 for more). Area C no longer part of BEDC As part of his report, Taylor said that the Boundary Economic Development Committee (BEDC) will move on despite Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area C (Christina Lake) opting out (see page 5). “Basically, we’re not looking for a motion on this matter. It was a question of whether or not our Boundary economic development group would be working in sync with the economic development commission,” Taylor explained.“I think we have that commitment from both groups for this coming year. It’s just a one-year commitment we’re looking at again, with a thought to evolving as the future changes within the Boundary,” he went on to say.
The Hope Lady talks about life from a hopeful perspective. Wendy Edey shares her experience with hope work, being hopeful, hopeful people, hopeful language and hope sym-bols. Hear about things that turned out better than ex-pected and impossible things that became possible.

TECHNOLOGY
Province has ready source of tech jobs Black Press
British Columbia has a ready source of great jobs and careers in technology. Our education programs need to keep up with that demand. John Leech, executive director of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC), explains that, “Every system we rely on – water, roads and transportation, telecommunications and Internet, hydro and natural gas, environment, health, forestry, and many more – utilizes engineering and applied science technology professionals working in the background. B.C.’s telecom and information technology (IT), animation and many other sectors produce new careers every month.” ASTTBC has more than 10,000 members currently working in thousands of careers available to graduates of two-year diploma programs available at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and other B.C. colleges and institutes. “Our members enjoy rewarding, well-paid and often recession-proof careers in public service and the private sector alike,” Leech states. “For huge numbers of young men and women, technology is the answer. In B.C. and across Canada, technology permeates every workplace and job. We need to get capable students involved and engaged in applied sciences and head off workforce shortages by building a B.C. ‘Science and Technology Culture.’” Leech calls on government for renewed efforts to build student skills and confidence in math and science programming. “We especially need to interest young students in science and how things work,” Leech says. “Young students use technology every day – smartphones, iPads and computers. They play video games, even build robots.” Leech lauds the recent “Year of Science” program that encouraged students toward so-called “STEM” subjects – science, technology, engineering and math. Citing the
recent $6 million B.C. campaign to encourage careers in trades, Leech urges a similar effort to build awareness of engineering technology education and careers. BC Technology Industries Association employers like Telus and BC Hydro and many smaller technology-rich companies say the single most important position they now struggle to fill is specialty technician/technologist. Even the Canadian Council of Chief Executives expressed concern that only 37 per cent of 16 to 18-year-olds were interested in taking even one post-secondary course in sciences, according to a recent Angus Reid survey. Leech says the opportunities for those seeking work in the technology field are considerable given a wave of retirements of present-generation B.C. technology professionals that is already underway. “Half of our membership is now middle-aged at 45plus, and 22 per cent are over age 55!” he says. “Every region of B.C. shows growing demand,” Leech concludes. “New two-year technology diploma programs are still needed in the north and central B.C. However, young people are investing to travel so they can earn the necessary tech qualifications.” It would appear their investment is a smart move, as it will result in a broad range of career opportunities. Industries in all regions of B.C. support programs for local trainees to fill engineering and applied science technologist, technician and technical specialist positions. Daniel Drexler of Drexler Computer Systems thinks that with advancing technology there will be the need for these types of jobs in Grand Forks. “In terms of computer technology style support, there’s support for anything and everything that’s going to be needed because everything has computer chips nowadays,” he explained. “The more Grand Forks and the consumers adapt to new technology, like iPads, iPods, any of that kind of stuff, you have to have more people in the area to support that kind of technology.”

CAR CARE
Know facts about winter tires Storing winter or spare tires Properly storing your winter tires will ensure they last longer and are ready to go for the next season. Winter tires should be placed in a cool, dark, and dry indoor location. Store them away from electric motors, since the ozone produced by electric motors can damage the tire rubber. If you are going to store tires while they are still mounted on wheels, the tire pressure should be reduced to 15 pounds per square inch and re- inflated when you mount them on your vehicle.
When you’re stuck in the snow Having the right tires can make a difference when you’re driving in winter conditions. Beyond the right tires, here are some tips in case you get stuck in the snow. • Be aware of traffic as you get out of your vehicle. • Determine if you can get your vehicle unstuck on your own or if you’ll need help. • Clean the snow away from the drive wheels. • Increase the traction in front of your drive wheels using traction mats, old carpets, salt, sand or cat litter. • When you are ready to attempt to get unstuck, make sure it is safe to do so. • Accelerate the vehicle gently. Hitting the
accelerator will cause the tires to spin and will only make the situation worse. • If this doesn’t work, try gently rocking the vehicle back and forth by shifting from forward to reverse, gradually increasing the distance travelled with each rock. Check your owner’s manual — if the instructions are different from what is written above, you should follow the steps as outlined in the manual.
Identifying and buying winter tires A performance-based standard (mutually agreed upon by the U.S. Rubber Manufacturers Association and the Rubber Association of Canada) specifically designates passenger and light truck winter tires that provide a higher level of traction in harsh winter conditions. Winter tires that meet these standards are identified by a snowflake on a mountain symbol next to the M&S symbol on the tire sidewall. An M&S designation means the tire is rated by the manufacturer for use in mud and snow. When you’re buying tires, remember to tell your local tire retailer what kind of road and weather conditions you drive in, so you get tires that are best suited for your needs. – ICBC.com
Get the right oil Fall is a very busy season for garages and mechanics as there are still many people who like to service their vehicle before the winter. While some people will make an appointment with their dealer, many others with older vehicles still rely upon their trusted mechanics to have a look at their car or truck before the cold season. Among the many points to be checked is the engine oil. For many people, oil is oil and that’s all there is to it. But for car specialists, oil is a very technical matter to handle and choosing the right oil for their customers’ cars and trucks becomes a science for them. As a matter of fact, there are so many types of engine oils on the market, that today some knowledge is required in order to keep up with all that is offered. As a motorist, you might be surprised to learn that even older engines will start and even run better with lighter oils during the cold months of winter. That’s why many car manufacturers will suggest a 5W-30 engine oil during the cold season. The number 5 identifies the lightness of the oil when it is cold, the W indicates it is designed for winter use and the 30 means that when the engine has warmed up, the oil will have thickened to a 30 weight capability. The engine will then start more easily with the light oil and will be well protected at speed as the oil thickens slightly.

Change blades Winter is just around the corner. With today’s cars and trucks requiring much less maintenance, many motorists have the tendency not to prepare their vehicles for winter (or any other season). Consequently, when the first cold rains or snowfalls appear, they wind up with a vehicle that is unable to cope with bad weather. Wiper blades are one item that is often overlooked. Many cars have worn-out blades that barely clean the windshield in the rain making driving very difficult, especially at night. Indeed, drivers only see glare when meeting oncoming vehicles. Wiper blades should be changed almost twice a year in order to get the best visibility possible. As for those of us who live in very cold or snowy areas, it is better to choose what is commonly called “winter wiper blades”. These are blades whose mechanism is covered with a rubber envelope designed to keep it free of ice, thus allowing the blade to better rest against the windshield. Most service stations, auto parts stores and even large department stores can provide the correct blades for your vehicle. Remember that blades are not all alike and surprisingly, the blade on the driver’s side of some vehicles is a different length from the blade on the passenger side. Some cars even have unique blades that only the dealer can provide.

With colder weather, the Boundary Emergency Transition Housing Society’s (BETHS) extreme weather shelter is set to open on Nov. 1 and operate seven days a week until March 31. As in past years, the shelter will operate out of the Grand Forks Christian Centre and Christopher Stevenson, BETHS’ co-ordinator, says that it will give people a place to stay in times of inclement weather. “The shelter is designed to give anybody who needs a place to sleep, a place to sleep,” Stevenson explains. “It’s a shelter for anybody who doesn’t have a comfortable, safe, livable environment to be in.” He adds that the shelter will be fully staffed and will be guaranteed to be open seven days a week, between 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. “If your house burns down, you can stay here. If your power goes out and it’s 30 C below, your house is going to be unlivable in two hours, you can come here. If you find yourself a traveller, or whoever, who just has nowhere to go, this is a safe place to be,” Stevenson states. BETHS’ co-ordinator also would like to raise its profile across the region this year, as the shelter is not only for Grand Forks but the area from Christina Lake to Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area E as well. “I don’t think a lot of people in the West Boundary, for instance, know that this is available to the region. It’s regional and we have transportation that’s available for people to get here, says Stevenson, adding that BETHS will be looking to find as many ways as possible to get people to the shelter. Anyone that knows of or sees people without a place to spend the night can call the RCMP.

Stevenson wants to stress that while BETHS is lucky to have the use of the Christian centre, it is not affiliated with a religious group and it is looking for options to provide the best service to people in the region. “What I’d like to get out to the region is that BETHS is an independent, not for profit; there is no religious affiliation. It’s a completely separate, independent operation,” he says. While BETHS is fully staffed this year, that doesn’t mean people can’t still help out with donations and the like. “We’re still looking for volunteers so if people want to come out, there are still other things that people can help us with.” Interested people can either email boundaryshelter@gmail. com or call Stevenson at the shelter phone, 250-584-5050.

Fortis BC will be upgrading its electrical infrastructure along Highway 3 between Grand Forks and Christina Lake until December. Tracy Tang, corporate communications adviser for Fortis BC, explained that Fortis BC and contractors are doing maintenance work to upgrade the existing electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure between the Christina Lake and Grand Forks substations. “The crews are replacing the old power poles and broken cross arms,” she said. “The work is being down to ensure that the safety and reliability is there for the electricity customers in the area.” Tang noted that upgrades aren’t necessarily done every year, but whenever it is required.
Scared Silly...
A most Sincere
“With infrastructure, you have to assess it and see how it’s performing,” she said. “It can be prone to storm damage, high winds, and all sorts of factors that wear down the infrastructure.” Fortis BC assesses the infrastructure constantly to determine when it needs to be replaced. “Investing in infrastructure is one of the most important ways that the company can continue to meet the energy needs of the customers,” she said. “As the population continues to grow and energy is being consumed more and more, we have to make sure we are investing and making these upgrades throughout the service territory to make sure we have reliable and safe service as possible.” Approximately 40 poles are scheduled to be replaced, Tang noted, with no service disruptions expected. Work began late August.

Aquatic Centre staff. I was at the aquatic centre on Sunday; I encountered a not-sotrivial problem with my vehicle which required that I make long distance calls. I didn’t have my cell phone; aquatic centre staff went out of their way to get me the help I needed. Special thanks to Fern! – David Tafel

The goal of Success By 6 is to better the lives of our Boundary area children in our families and enhancing our communities.
The Richard Fehr Memorial Fundraiser was set up to raise money to send children with special needs to summer camps each year in memory of Richard Fehr. Amy Fehr, Richard’s mother, hopes that this will help children with special needs go to summer camp across British Columbia. “The main reason this (was) being done is because (Pines Bible Camp) was the happiest place for Richard. Everybody was equal there and in my heart, the way I’m going to keep on remembering Richard are through the smiles of the kids with special needs,” she said. “It’s not just going to be concentrated in Grand Forks, it will be throughout the province.” An auction was created on Facebook where people could donate a service or handmade item, such as a haircut, babysitting or painting, and people could bid on the item or service. Fehr noted that if the auction did well, they could fund several children next summer. The

Residents are reminded to store food away to keep bears away CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter
With the weather getting colder, bears can be seen around Grand Forks pilfering through garbage and the new green bins. Grand Forks Conservation Officer Dave Webster noted that there are several bears within the city limits that are quite active during this time. “Along Kettle River, we have them between 6th Street and the high school, and area near (the Trans Canada Trail),” he said. “We tend to get bears there as well because it’s a green belt area and swamp area, so they tend to show up there.” Webster pointed out that when you come across a bear, you want to make sure the bear knows that you’re there. “Make some noise when you’re walking along the trails, and if you have a pet with you it’s best that they’re on a leash,” Webster said. “If the bear is on the trail or on your intended path, you need to back away and give that bear space because sometimes if they feel threatened, or if they think they don’t have any option to escape, they can act aggressively in defense. “That being said, in this area they have lots of room to roam and right now, they’re trying to pick up on food sources.” Webster explained that fruit trees should be

auction concluded on Oct. 30 with many businesses donating their services to be bid on. “I do have people from all over British Columbia who are asking me for information because they also want to do fundraisers,” she added. “We’re working to put together a package that people can send out and then people can contact me if they’re interested in doing this fundraising.” Richard’s birthday, on June 16, will continue to be celebrated at Pines as the opening day. J. A. Hutton Elementary School held a raffle, with the money also going towards Richard’s fund. “One of the prizes was a lunch with the principal and a friend because that’s something that Richard dreamed of doing,” Fehr noted. Future ideas include a Strongman competition and a family dance in the spring in Grand Forks and Christina Lake area. Richard Fehr died tragically during the windstorm on July 20 at Pines Bible Camp in Grand Forks. Donations can still be made to CIBC account 122 6932.

pruned and fallen fruits picked-up, pet food shouldn’t be left out, and compost or recycling should be put away safely. When food is left out, bears are able to key in on those items and stay in the community longer than if there was no food available, he added. Previous areas that had no bears are now seeing signs of bears coming in. “If people are putting food in those green bins then it’s definitely an attractant and it’s going to cause conflict with the wildlife, and we have seen that already,” Webster said. “It does have to go out the morning of pick up and contrary to what the city is asking, I would suggest that no food products be put up at all this time of year. It’s that time of year where we all need to be vigilant in our yards and keep our yards clean.” Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison added that any calls about bears would be referred to the conservation officer unless he is unavailable. “We haven’t had to destroy any bears ourselves and our biggest message that we’re putting out to people is to clean up your yards and stay away from the bears,” said Harrison. “Leave them alone and they’ll wander off on their own because we’re living in their backyards as well.” If you do have a conflict with a bear, in terms of property damage or safety concerns, contact the 24-hour line at 1-877-952-7277.

2012 Kootenay literary and youth creative writing competition now open Submitted
It’s time for a revolution in writing. The Kootenay Literary Competition (KLC), and its youth division, the Kootenay Youth Creative Writing Competition, is now open. This annual writing event is open to all writers in the entire Kootenay region. For adults, this year’s theme is “revolution” and should be explored in their original work. Adults may enter in three categories: fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. For youth, Grades 7 to 9 must use the words “riddle,” “domino” and any form of the verb “to skulk,” somewhere in their work. Grades 10 to 12 must use the phrase “there was only one thing to do” somewhere in their work. 2012 will be the most exciting year yet, with larger cash prizes, lower entry fees, publication in the KLC anthology for all winners, writing workshops, a draw prize for emerging writers and a special bonus prize for all youth winners. Our annual awards ceremony and celebration will feature winner’s readings, free desserts, and a very special guest performer and speaker – spoken word poet Sheri-D Wilson. The full judge list for 2012 has not been confirmed but the KLC committee is thrilled to announce that Fred Wah, Canada’s Poet Laureate, will be judging the adult poetry category and the 2012 One Book One Kootenay winner, Rita Moir, will return to judge the adult creative non-fiction category. Prizes range from $100 up to $500 depending on the category. There will also be a draw prize for a $100 bookstore gift certificate for all adult Are you out for a walk Thursday evening or Friday morning?
emerging writers. Plus, there will be a bonus this year; all youth winners will be eligible to attend a weekend youth creative writing workshop, to be held in Nelson, B.C. in spring 2013 (details to be announced). This prize also includes meals and two nights accommodation for the winners and one parent or legal guardian, at the Hume Hotel. Competition Details The 2012 Entry Fees are as follows: • $25 for each submission in the adult competition (three categories) • $10 for each submission in the youth competition (two age categories) There is a maximum of 3,000 words in the adult competition, 2,500 in the youth competition and 40 lines maximum for poetry. Entry is through our online form and payment through our secure PayPal account. Visit the rules page on our website for full details. Writers may submit to more than one category but each submission must be accompanied by a separate entry form and fee. All submissions must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. For complete information on the competition, entry forms, entry fees, and how to submit, visit the KLC website www.kootenaylitcomp.com or email admin@kootenaylitcomp.com. For up-tothe-minute announcements, writers can sign up for our email newsletter. KLC can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @Kootenaylitcomp. Winners in each of the categories will be announced at the KLC Awards Ceremony and Celebration on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.

Hospital auxiliary hosts area conference Submitted
The Grand Forks Auxiliary to the Boundary Hospital Society hosted the Kootenay Boundary Area Conference on Sept. 24. The theme of the conference was “Volunteers are worth a Mint.” A total of 160 auxilians from Arrow Lakes, Castlegar, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Nelson, Salmo, South Slocan, Rossland, Slocan, Salmo, Trail, and Kaslo were in attendance at this one-day event. President Willy Triveri welcomed all the guests, and introduced the head table: Honora Cooper (BCAHA Kootenay Boundary area rep), Ms. Cher Wyers (city councillor), Mr. Roly Russell (regional district Area D rep), Mr. Glen Sutherland (BOD Interior Health), Ms. Ingrid Hampf (director of acute care Kootenay Boundary) and Margaret
Dawson, (president of the B.C. Association of Health Care Auxiliaries). Each of the guests delineated the importance of volunteers in our communities and expressed their gratitude for the financial support each auxiliary provides for the betterment of health care. Volunteers give selflessly of their time and talent to raise funds to purchase much needed equipment for their respective hospitals. Dawson provided a very informative account of the history and the duties of the BCAHA. She also stated that updating policies and procedures is a work in progress. Like most organizations, BCAHA has acknowledged the challenge of change. Cooper presented her report on the Selkirk Regional Bursary and announced that Castlegar would host next year’s 2013 BCAHA Kootenay Bound-
ary Area Conference. During the break, attendees were given the opportunity to visit and to meet other members, and to browse and purchase many of the lovely items that were on display. Door prizes and a silent auction added an interesting dimension to the conference. Following a lovely luncheon, Vern Walsh, local representative of “Lifeline,” spoke of the 24-hour personal emergency system and cited several examples where this system has saved lives. Brian Johnson of Flexus spoke about the spine and back and how, through proper exercise, one can avoid injury. He answered many questions from the floor related to his very informative presentation. The conference concluded followed by a tour of the Grand Forks Auxiliary Thrift Store.

Whitecaps FC Kootenay Academy enjoy MLS weekend in Vancouver WHITECAPS FC Submitted
Recently, Whitecaps FC Kootenay Academy travelled to Vancouver for training, games, and the big Whitecaps FC vs. Portland Timbers MLS match at BC Place. Over 100 players and staff took in a training session with Whitecaps FC Vancouver technical staff at the ‘Caps training facility on Oct. 20, and then they played games against Whitecaps FC Vancouver Academy and other selected local opposition. Finally, on Sunday it was off to the ‘Caps MLS match at home to Portland, where Academy members were special guests pitch-side on the BC Place field to watch the warm-up and meet some special guests. “This is part of our inaugural year for the Kootenay Academy, and what a way to kick off this program with a great MLS weekend in Vancouver,” said Whitecaps FC director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. “This was a great opportunity to bring our regional academy centre programs into Vancouver to get a taste of training and games in Vancouver with our staff and of course, to be our guests at BC Place to see a big MLS game.” Seven boys and girls Prospects training groups from U-11 to U-17 were selected this fall to take part in the Whitecaps FC Kootenay Academy program which runs for seven months from September through April and includes eight training weekends in Nelson and four travel events. All sessions are developed by Whitecaps FC professional coaching staff and delivered in partnership with Soccer Quest. This includes monthly coaching visits from Whitecaps FC staff, including regional head coach David Broadhurst.

“There’s a real buzz in the Kootenays about this program,” said David Spendlove, director of Whitecaps FC local partner Soccer Quest. “This Academy – and weekends like this – really grow the game and help bring young players from all areas of the Kootenays into the Whitecaps FC soccer network to connect them to opportunities they otherwise would not get to be part of.” The Kootenay Academy is part of the network of Whitecaps FC Academy Centres, including locations in the Okanagan and Vancouver. Additional centres will be added to the network over the next year. For more information, visit: www.whitecapsfc.com/youth/ programs/academycentres.

Boundary Electric to supply transformer to Nunavut hospital CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter
A change in schedule cut short the excitement in Grand Forks about a possible visit from Buffalo Airways, featured in the reality show Ice Pilots NWT. The company was set to descend into the city to pick up some equipment. David Evdokimoff, co-owner of Boundary Electric, explained that their customer, Nunavut Power, was starting to have some problems with a transformer at a hospital. “They bought the transformer from us and told us they would be sending Buffalo Air to us. I said, ‘Oh really? The TV show?’ and they said, ‘Yes,’” said Evdokimoff. “What eventually happened, I’m not sure if it’s a scheduling thing on their end, but there was a last minute change where they get two tandem (truck) drivers to come in here (Oct. 25) to pick up the transformer.” Evdokimoff stated that the drivers will be driving around the clock to get to Yellowknife and then flying from there.” Boundary Electric builds transformers and electrical equipment for different companies. The transformer that was pur-
chased is used in the electrical industry to step down from a high voltage to a low voltage. “It’s all the pull-mounts and stuff that you see in the city on the pole lines,” Evdokimoff explained. “This is a little bit of a bigger one that would sit on a pad that is situated outside the hospital. It’s just stepping down from the high voltage to the low voltage that the hospital will use it for.” Evdokimoff noted that Nunavut Power has previously purchased from Boundary Electric before. “It was more of a surprise that there was a possibility of Buffalo Air would come into the valley,” he said. “I am a fan, and a lot of my workers were wondering if they could get the day off to watch them fly in. It’s what we do on a daily basis but this just happened to have a bit of Hollywood charm.” When he heard that Buffalo Airways would be coming, Evdokimoff went to their website to look at the different planes to see which one could possible transport the 7,000 pound equipment. “I was trying to figure out what type of plane they would send and there was a 1938 bomber type outfit that was a possibility,” he said. “Man, that would be something. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”

Bruins lose close one to ‘Hawks KARL YU Gazette Editor
The Grand Forks Border Bruins won their only game of the season against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and almost defeated the defending KIJHL champions again, losing 4-3 in regulation time. In a Friday night home game that featured free admission, the Border Bruins played tough against the Nitehawks in front of 200 fans. Beaver Valley jumped up to a 2-0 lead but Grand Forks re-
sponded in the second, tying the game up with a power play goal from forward Tyson Glass and a goal from forward Kublai Barlas. While forward Jackson Purvis scored for Grand Forks in the third period, the Nitehawks scored two goals of their own. Dominic Stadnyk was in net for Grand Forks and stopped 41 of 45 shots while Barlas and Connor Kidd – who had two assists – were named the second and third stars of the game respectively. Ironically, Stadnyk was in
net for Beaver Valley when Grand Forks won on Sept. 15. The team also lost 6-2 at Grand Forks Arena to the Nelson Leafs last Thursday and 9-3 to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in Creston last Saturday. Connor Gross and Connor Bowen scored for the Border Bruins vs. Nelson, while Gross had two and Hayden Pasacreta scored the other goal for Grand Forks against Creston Valley. Grand Forks has two road games this week; vs. the Castlegar Rebels on Friday and a game in Spokane on Sunday.

Raymund “Ray” Paul Nicol of Midway, B.C. passed away on October 3, 2012 at the age of 67 years. He is survived by his family, brothers and sisters, Greg (Linda) of Kamloops, Phillip of Lytton, Louise (Art) Stoll of Scotch Creek, Stephen (Katharine) of Vancouver, Matthew of Blue River, Janine (Brad) Filmer of Taylor, Teresa (David Pringle) of Westwold, Della (Willy) Faremo of Surrey, (all in B.C.), and numerous nieces and nephews, all over. Predeceased by his parents Ellen (1998), Ray (2000) and his nephew Nathan Raymund (2004). Raymund was born in Calgary and was the oldest of nine children. He was raised in Coquitlam, and being an impatient youth, he quit St. Thomas Moore high school at a young age and joined the Navy, thus beginning his seafaring adventures. In the early ’60s, Raymund graduated with honours as an Ordinary Seaman with RCN from HMCS Cornwallis, near Digby, Nova Scotia before moving back home and attending Simon Fraser University. The rest of the ’60s and ’70s were spent travelling, furthering his naval career and education, including securing his European ticket. Ray worked as a mate on deep sea tankers as well as with Dome Petroleum, on an icebreaker in the Canadian arctic. Most of his tanker time was on 100,000 ton ships running between the Middle East and Europe. He actively pursued his passions for automobiles, motorcycles, and scuba diving. The next few decades Raymund transitioned naturally from land to sea to land again. He started doing his “horse thing” in Sumas, B.C. while having many adventures during his tenure with Seaspan, before Ànally settling in Midway. He will be remembered as an avid reader, a world traveller, for his love of the symphony, and opera, for his passions of politics, history, and aviation, and especially his equine companions. Family and friends gathered October 13, 2012 at the Midway Community Hall for a celebration of Raymund’s life, where family and friends reminisced of his past and last experiences. Arrangments were entrusted to Grand Forks Funeral Home. Shalom, Brother.
