SAMS celebrates opening of brand new gymnasium Students, staff, administration, and community members gathered at Sir Alexander Mackenzie School last week to celebrate the opening of their long-awaited full size gym. As SAMS Principal Jeremy Baillie expressed, the community had waited a long time for this day after the original gym was condemned in 2008. Many were uncertain as to whether or not the gym would be replaced or if the students would simply have to settle for
the much smaller gym at the former Nusatsum Elementary School. Thankfully, this proved not to be the case. “The hard work of our superintendent Denise Perry, the Board of Education, and many community user groups have resulted in this wonderful new facility,” said Baillie. The SAMS Band, which is also benefiting from the construction with a new music room, opened the ceremonies by playing three well-received
pieces for the attendees. Hereditary Chiefs Noel Pootlass, Billy Andy Jr., and elected Nuxalk Nation Chief Andrew Andy were on hand to assist in the opening remarks. Pootlass urged the community and the children to take care of the new facility and pointed out that the community now has three venues to host various sporting and cultural events. “I have visions of Bella Coola hosting coastal sport-
ing tournaments and with these three buildings that can become a reality,” he said. “I want to thank everybody that worked so hard for this gym.” A traditional Eagle Down Blessing ceremony conducted by the Chiefs and elder Lillian Siwallace ensured the gym is opened in the spirit of peace. From there an emotional Robyn Willis, Chair of the Board of Education, took to the microphone to express how important the facility will
be to the community in the years to come and how hard everyone worked on the project. “It’s a very emotional celebration for the school and the district,” said Willis. “It’s no secret that this province is going through difficult times and declining enrollment and we’re no different. Fatal crash on Hill still under investigation We wish all contestants of the 26th annual Rodeo success!
Have a safe weekend! Bella Coola Valley Seafoods 250 982 2713
BY CAITLIN THOMPSON Bella Coola RCMP is still investigating what may have caused the singlevehicle crash that resulted in one fatality on the Hill. A road construction crew discovered the vehicle and body early this month, and questions about the cause of the mysterious crash and the identity of the man who apparently went unnoticed for so long are still swirling. “This is still being investigated by
the coroner but we are confident that road conditions did not play a factor,” said Constable Jared Etsell of the Bella Coola RCMP. “We have identified the victim but are not releasing the name. The family has been notified.” The vehicle will be inspected by the Ministry of Transportation to make sure there was no mechanical failure that could have contributed to the crash, but RCMP are fairly certain this wasn’t something that caused it to leave the road.
There has been some suggestion that the person may have taken their own life, and the RCMP is not ruling this out either. “There is the possibility that this incident might have been intentional,” said Etsell. “We are still investigating this theory and are following some leads on this.” The timeline was also a big unknown but RCMP now believe that the vehicle had been there since late February or early March until it was discovered in early June.

Restoration of Highway 20 Hill widens most narrow sections BY CHRISTINA BOUCHER Construction on the Hill was completed last week, according to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Cariboo District Manager Todd Hubner. An Interior Roads crew was contracted by MOTI carried out the road work from May 25 to June 12. During this time, the road was closed except for two daily openings. The main objective of the work plan is to restore sections of Highway
20 that had been damaged during the flood of September, 2010. At the midpoint of Heckman Pass, or the area that is known as the most narrow section of the road on the Hill, roughly one meter of road width was lost. As roadside ditches reached capacity during the heavy rains, water flowed across the road surface, eroding the shoulder. The road will undergo rock buttressing, a procedure in which large boulders are placed below the eleva-
tion of the road and anchored in place. The buttress is formed with interlocking dry-stacked rocks, similar to a stack of Legos. This repair is expected to restore the meter of width that was lost, yet it is unlikely that the road will be widened any further than its original condition. Although the need to repair the road was recognized by MOTI, Hubner notes that an appropriate work plan was not formulated until winter, when it was too late to safely work in the
avalanche path. Due to the difficult terrain of the area, the engineering prescription needed to include high standards for both the road construction and worker safety. Construction was thus postponed until spring: after weather conditions had improved, but before tourist season was in full swing. On behalf of MOTI, Hubner also expressed his thanks to the community members of the Bella Coola Valley for their patience with the road closures.
B.C. First Nations reject new mine proposal from Taseko B.C. First Nations leaders are condemning a revised proposal for a controversial mining project, saying it's as environmentally dangerous as the first version, which was rejected by the federal cabinet last year. Taseko Mines officials said their new proposal for the Prosperity gold and copper mine near Williams Lake would preserve Fish Lake, an important First Nations site, and reduce other environmental impacts. But the Tsilhqot'in First Nation said the lake wouldn't be saved by surrounding it with one of the world's largest open pit mines and a tailings pond designed for 720 million tons of toxic waste. Chief Joe Alphonse, tribal chairman of the Tsilhqot'in, said the second proposal is no better than the first one and was submitted without consultation with aboriginal leaders. The First Nation also said that by repackaging an already-rejected proposal, the company is abusing the process at the expense of taxpayers. Union of BC Indian Chiefs President Grand Chief Stewart Philip says Taseko has no credibility because during previous public hearings the company said all other options for the mine would be far more destructive than their original proposal.

I WILL MARK MY BALLOT ‘YES’ TO SAY ‘NO’ TO THE HST As your MLA and a member of the Official Opposition, I want you to know exactly why I will vote ‘YES’ to scrap the Liberal government’s HST • The HST is a massive shift of the tax burden from large corporations onto the backs of average families and small businesses. • The deceptions of the HST cannot conceal the fact many things that had zero provincial tax are now taxed at 7% more. Items such as travel, haircuts, restaurant meals, sports fees, school supplies, safety equipment and household repairs, including making your home energy efficient or fixing a leaky roof. • Not only will ordinary families pay more with the HST, but it will mean more cuts to vital public services including health care, education, seniors care and other social programs. My ‘YES’ vote to scrap the HST is a vote for more fairness. More support for ordinary families and small business. More protection for health care and education. A vote for accountability.

More prize money and lots of action expected at 2011 Bella Coola Rodeo SUBMITTED BY JOY MACKAY With less than two weeks to go, plans are being finalized for the 26 Annual BCRA Rodeo, hosted by the Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders. A full year’s worth of work will culminate in one action-packed long weekend – July 1 - 3 at the rodeo grounds on Walker Island. Once again, the event promises to deliver an exciting and fun-filled long weekend, loaded with entertainment, both day and night. NEED Returning this year is stock contractor Dale Dejonkiere of Wild West Entertainment Rodeo (WWE). Increased added prize money and a two-head option for cowboys have been offered as incentives to attract more contestants to the classic roughstock events of “bulls, bares and broncs”. Friday afternoon, July 1 will feature the excitement of the annual $2,000added Bull-a-Rama, Calcutta style, where spectators are invited to bid on their favourite cowboy and stand a chance of winning a share of the substantial auction proceeds. Speaking of spectators winning, Saturday and
Sunday’s entertainment features the now famous Cow Patty Bingo. “Buy” a piece of the dirt and cross your fingers that the cow does her deed on your little piece of real estate. Announcer/auctioneer Brian Baldry, will also be returning again this year, along with his wife, professional rodeo photographer, Nancy Baldry. This year’s musical entertainment will be provided by ‘Rick Stavely and Western Front.’ Be prepared to dance the night away to this energetic country-rock band. The Bella Coola Bus Co. will again provide regularly scheduled bus service throughout the evening, to ensure a safe ride home for all. The weekend’s entertainment begins on Canada Day: Friday morning at 10:00 with an open gymkhana. Rodeo Queen Contestants will also demonstrate their skills during this time. 1:00 pm will see the start of the 2011 Bull-a-Rama and two British Columbia Barrel Racing Association races. 9:30 pm kicks off an evening of dancing to ‘Western Front.’ Friday night is traditionally family night, so bring

the kids and enjoy the evening. A full concession, complete with rodeo burgers, is available throughout each day and evening. Saturday and Sunday feature BCRA Rodeo Performances, immediately following the Grand Entry at 1:00 pm each day. &But don’t wait until after lunch to experience the atmosphere – Cowboy Breakfast is offered from 6 – 10 am. An Adult dance is featured on Saturday. The King of Beers will be on hand, along with as a safe ride home. The Valley Ridge Riders have worked long and hard over recent years to replace our ageing arena and other facilities. Last September’s major flood caused some damage to the arena and buildings but through the outstanding commitment of local volunteers and businesses, our facilities are expected better than ever, with only a few of the telltale signs remaining from last September’s flooding. On a related note, the Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders are grateful of the support that came from agencies and individuals around
the province, in the form of emergency livestock feed to replace the losses of winter feed that were experienced in virtually all areas of the Valley. Special thanks are due the Horse Council of BC and the Williams Lake and District and Bulkley Valley Credit Unions. We feel truly blessed to be a part of the larger rodeo and agricultural community, whose concern and generosity has helped our community to get through the winter. We look forward to being a stronger organization as a result, and to hosting our best rodeo yet this July long weekend. Watch for posters outlining additional activities for the weekend, and check out the display of prize buckles at Cliff Kopas Store. Anyone who would like to offer a helping hand with this year’s rodeo, whether assisting with preparations or during the weekend itself, please contact Joy at 799-5410. Volunteers are always welcome! More than anything, it is the volunteer spirit of the community that makes this great event successful. Thank you for
your support and see you at the Rodeo! Cowboy Up! ps: For those of you with a competitive streak, Local Entry Day is June 21 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm (250957-7975 or leave a message at 250-7995410).

Digital switchover not likely to affect Hagensborg TV subscribers As many subscribers to the Hagensborg TV system have probably noticed, there are now frequent commercial references that the nationwide switch from analog signals to high definition digital signals is looming. As the Society reported last fall, the transition to high definition signals, which took place in the U.S. last year, has been announced for 2012 in Canada (officially the deadline is August 31, 2011). Hagensborg TV and Radio has been assured that their operations will not be affected by the need to replace present equipment, nor will off-air users require new receivers or sets. The signal will not be received or rebroadcast in high definition, but will continue to be available as it is now. However, CBC may be impacted by this change. Radio broadcasting will not be affected. PBS service has been restored to the
TV system, following the equipment failure several months ago. Hagensborg TV and Radio apologizes for the absence of this signal and the length of time it took to effect repairs. The quality of TSN reception has been improved, and the coverage area for FM 89.3 has been increased with additional power. Hagensborg TV and Radio is a registered not-for-profit Society comprised of about 100 members and eight
volunteer directors. They operate the radio and uncoded TV system for the Hagensborg area by collecting membership fees, purchasing signals, and maintaining the receiving and transmitting equipment on Mt. Nusatsum. Their basic annual cost for signals, decoders, insurance, maintenance, and communication is about $7,500, which comes entirely from voluntary memberships. They receive no government funds.
The Society needs your support through the payment of dues for 2011. If you are an existing supporter, you will receive a statement of your account later this year. If you are not presently a supporter, please consider joining the society. Dues are only $50/ year, or $25/year
for radio only. Most residents of the Valley tune in a radio sometime during the day, whether at home, at work, or in a vehicle. Your membership will help us continue to provide service. Please mail your payment to: Hagensborg TV Society, Box 354, Hagensborg, BC.

Have a great time at the Rodeo! Congrats to the Valley Ridge Riders on their 26th Annual Rodeo!
Your Co-op is proud to be a supporter of the annual RODEO!
All that training paid off! Korky Richardson (Thompson) of Bella Coola (now residing in Courtenay) completed her first Boston Marathon last April. “I just want to thank all the support I received from people, especially my Dad, my biggest fan,” said Korky. “It was a tough race but we all did finish and was a great experience.” Korky completed the race with her two friends Karen Tobacca and Diana Olsen. Joining them
was another Bella Coolan, Beth Hopkins (Hammer) who completed the five kilometre race. This year marked the 115 Boston Marathon and 27,000 people took part. The Marathon is a grueling 26 mile run and in the history of marathon running, no one has ever completed the distance faster than Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya did on April 18, 2011. With a time of 2:03:02, he surpassed the previous world-best time by 57 seconds.
