The Hill contains several steep and narrow sections, but the accident was reported to have taken place just west of Young Creek
Accident claims life of unidentified driver on Hill A single vehicle crash has claimed the life of an unknown male. The vehicle, reported to be a silver Toyota Tacoma truck, was discovered by road construction crew personnel mid-afternoon last Saturday, June 4. Sources say that workers apparently only detected something was wrong after stopping to allow a bear to pass in front of them. After watching the animal descend over the bank about two kilometres west of Young Creek, they noticed the unmistak-
able shine of a vehicle in the sun. While details of the accident and the identity of the individual remain unclear, it is believed that the vehicle has been there for weeks or perhaps even months. Road conditions may have contributed to the tragedy, and the colour of the vehicle did little to notify other travelers and workers of its presence. It is believed that the vehicle was traveling downhill at the time and most are speculating that snowy conditions
must have covered any trace of the resulting tire tracks. The truck was located about 100 feet over the bank, but no trace of the accident was ever reported at the time. At present it is not understood why a missing person’s report was not filed for this area, but RCMP are releasing little information until more questions are answered. The driver is believed to a middleaged BC resident who was traveling alone. “This is an ongoing investigation and we cannot
release any details until we have more answers,” said Constable Jarrod Estell of the Bella Coola RCMP. “We can confirm there has been an accident on the Hill and one person is deceased.” Further information is not expected to be forthcoming until RCMP can determine when the accident actually took place and locate the victim’s family. “We are still in the preliminary stages and notifying next of kin,” said Estell. “At this point in time we cannot release a timeline
of when the accident may have occurred.” While several vehicles have gone over the edge of the Hill since its construction over 50 years ago, this is the first fatality that has apparently gone unnoticed for so long. The last fatality occurred in 2007 when an individual went over in a heavy snowfall. In that case, the scene was quickly discovered by emergency personnel. Since that time there have been no other fatal accidents reported until last weekend.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie School would like to thank everyone who helped make the District Track Meet a huge success. Despite not having a meet for the last 3 years everything ran smoothly and an excellent time was had by all who attended. We had great participation at track practices. Many who attended achieved personal bests. Some of the highlights included the relays, where the students beat out the teachers by a fraction of a second. The high jump and javelin were crowd favorites. There were also some surprise wins in the 100m sprint and long distance races. We are looking forward to expanding next year’s meet with more events, and participation from other schools, parents and volunteers. So mark our track meet in your calendar for next year as an event not to be missed.

The Staff and Administration of Acwsalcta School would like to wish the Acwsalcta Grads of 2011 all the best for a happy and prosperous future! Patrick Gunderson (Interior Roads), Stephen Waugh (CCRD Emergency Program Coordinator), and Brad Koroluk (DFO), were among those honoured at the Premier’s Innovation and Excellence Awards in Victoria as part of the Highway 20 Response and Recovery Team.
Locals honoured for work during flood at Premier’s Awards in Victoria The exceptional work of B.C.'s public service employees and teams whose contributions have made a positive difference in the province were recognized with the Premier's Innovation and Excellence Awards, presented by Premier Christy Clark. “The recipients of these awards demonstrate the value that the professional public service brings to all of our lives, families and communities,” said Premier Clark. “The external panel of judges for this program always tell us how
impressed they are by the calibre of the nominees, and this year is no exception. By providing this recognition, we’re proud to showcase the very best of the public service at work all across our province.” The annual provincial awards ceremony is the BC Public Service's highest recognition event. It acknowledges achievements in all areas of public service including Cross-Government Integration, Emerging Leader, Innovation, Leadership, Legacy, Organizational
Excellence, Partnership and Service Excellence. The group from Bella Coola, known as the ‘Highway 20 Response and Recovery Team,’ was recognized in the Interior and Northern region in the CrossGovernment Integration category. While the group didn’t win a finalist award, they were honoured for their work following heavy rainfall last September, which left the only highway to Bella Coola damaged and impassable. partnered to open Highway 20 in only 17 days. The massive rainfall caused washouts, rock falls and flooding and left Bella Coola residents in fear they would be cut off from food, fuel and emergency services. The team planned, initiated and completed $20.7 million worth of emergency work. Barges brought help from Vancouver, including heavy equipment and
much-needed fuel. Over 50 pieces of equipment and 100 people worked 24-7 to restore access, while local governments pitched in to create command centres and handle communications. Place your business card in our Business Directory for only $10 per issue.

Centennial Pool renovations complete, pool to open mid-June The Central Coast Regional District (CCRD) Pool Commission, is pleased to announce that significant renovations to the Centennial Pool are nearly complete. These include removing the many layers of paint accumulated over the years, sealing cracks, injecting cement under the pool tank, smoothing the edging tiles, and coating the tank with a flexible sealant that will eliminate the need for yearly painting. Hiring of staff is now underway and the Commission anticipates a mid-June opening. The Pool Commission would like to thank the community for its interest and support, in particular the fund raising efforts of Ruth Kaisla, Brian Lande and Tour de Bella Coola.

SAMS Outdoor Ed Students complete first trip to Hakai Pass Hakai!!! We recently returned from Calvert Island. From May 20 - 25, seven super keen Outdoor Ed students took the opportunity and had a trip of a lifetime. Compared to our fall hike, the weather this week was dry and Hawaiilike. The paddling and surf conditions were ideal for learning, and students also hiked the seven beaches trail, were successful on a leadership day, and experienced a 24-hour solo exercise. To hear more about the students’
experiences we will be doing a slideshow presentation Thursday, June 9, from 7- 9pm in the NES gym. Ben, Gab and Francois will be performing three to four songs to go with a very professional movie/DVD from our Hakai trip. Jim Blueschke, one of the chaperones put together a very intriguing and captivating film that includes incredible photography, good humour and highlights the students’ experiences and achievements (not to mention there is also a short clip of Jim’s very
close encounter with a friendly resident wolf ). There will be door prizes for those who purchase a ticket from an Outdoor Education student $3 in advance or $5 at the door. Tickets can also be purchased at SAMS at the office. Baked goods, coffee, juice and tea will also be for sale. The ‘Happy Warrior’ trip awards will also be handed out. We would like to thank the following people and organizations for their support: Williams
Lake and District Credit Union, School District 49, Hakai Beach Institute, BC Parks, Hagensborg Mercantile, Bella Coola Valley Seafoods, Shearwater Marine Water Taxi, Steven Hodgson (BC parks), Jeremy Baillie (SD 49), chaperones: Jim Blueschke, Sara Germain and Skye Phillips (instructor). Eric Peterson, Christina Munk, Dan (chef ) from Hakai Beach Institute. Participants on the trip were: Francois Jacques, Ben and Gab Fernandez, Bobby Snow, Felicia Harris, Keri Currie, and Andrew Sandford.

First Nations Artists Featured at 2011 Discovery Coast Music Festival
Digging Roots are the recipients of both an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for Best Blues Album, and a Native American Music Award for Best Pop Album in 2010 This year the Discovery Coast Music Festival is proud to once again host First Nations artists of note: the first solo Aboriginal female hip hop artist, Eekwol,
and the four-piece blues-crossover band, Digging Roots. Eekwol, AKA Lindsay Knight, hails from the Muskoday Cree First Nation of Saskatchewan. “I
didn’t want to be categorized as female, or Aboriginal,” says Knight of her stage name choice. “I wanted to be recognized for my dedication, talent and love
for this hip hop art.” She was the winner of the First Nations Award for Arts and Entertainment in 2008. A prolific artist, Eekwol has recorded and produced seven
albums and EPs, and appeared as a guest on many compilations, including one in Japan. Winners of a Juno for their 2009 album “We Are,” Digging Roots’ almost indefinable sound is blurred somewhere between the lines of roots, rock, hip hop, and blues. Attesting to their cross-genre chops, they won both an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for Best Blues Album, and a Native American Music Award for Best Pop Album in 2010 – for the same recording! Lead singer ShoShona Kish’s sometimes throaty vocals have been likened to Janis Joplin, and talented guitarist Raven Kanatakta plays with reference to his influences (think, Hendrix meets Sun House meets Derek
