SD5 welcomes superintendent ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

School District 5 has hired a new superintendent. Lynn Hauptman will soon make the move from Prince Rupert to join the Southeast Kootenay district administration. Hauptman said the move is one she is excited to make, as it will be a return to the East Kootenay for her. She worked in SD6 in Kimberley for almost 10 years. She said she has heard that SD5 is a tre-

mendous district. “I’m really looking forward to working with everybody,” she said. “I’m really pleased to see the direction that the district has been taking in terms of making sure that all students are successful.” Hauptman said she looks forward to continuing on in that direction. Her and her husband are also looking forward to being closer to family in the area.

A Cranbrook senior has become part of a local short film in production about the Mad Trapper. Garth Loxton, 90, came

forward with his unique story earlier this year after seeing an article in the Townsman about filmmaker Kaio Kathriner’s movie based on the Mad Trapper, a recluse living in the Northwest Territories in the

1930s who was tracked down by police and killed after he attacked Mounties. In his youth, Loxton was in the army with a Mountie who was part of the search for the Mad Trapper.

“Garth’s story matched what we researched about the events regarding the Mad Trapper,” said Kathriner.

Mayors from all over the province met in Prince George last week for the twice-yearly B.C. Mayors’ Caucus. The caucus was a two-day opportunity for chief elected officials to discuss and share thoughts on what is and isn’t working in the realm of local government. Cranbrook’s Mayor, Wayne Stetski, was one of the 70 mayors in attendance last week and

WHAT CHOICE WILL WE MAKE? Low Taxes or High Taxes? * New Jobs or Lost Jobs? * A Strong Economy or the Worst Economy in Canada? Access to Our Backcountry or More Road Closures & Parks? * A Strong Proven MLA or a Rookie MLA?

said the meetings were fruitful and even included an appearance from B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix. Stetski said the caucus had extended invitations to all the provincial leaders, but Dix was the only one who could make it. The candidate for Premier was asked whether he would support a provincial ministry dedicated to local government.
