Last year $11 million helped send over 15,000 kids to one of the six camps supported by Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons restaurant owners work with community youth organizations and schools to help choose the kids, between nine and 12, who will be sponsored to go. Crime task force looks at Surrey model Lower Mainland delegation gives presentation to Prince George group DELYNDA PILON newsroom@pgfreepress.com

The Mayor’s Task Force on Crime this week held its third meeting, coming together to hear from members of a similar committee from Surrey who’ve successfully taken on crime in their city. “On Monday afternoon, three members from Surrey joined the task force committee and shared a lot of the work done in Surrey around the implementation of a crime reduction strategy,” Mayor Shari Green said. “It was a good chance for my team to see why we

chose Surrey, and why we have formulated a lot of our strands of work we will do around what Surrey has done. “We heard some great examples from them.” She added the Surrey team is dynamic and energized, giving her team the opportunity to better understand ways to reduce crime. “This is our third meeting, so we will take our learnings from Surrey and begin getting down to work,” she said. “We have done a bit of an inventory of what’s already in place in Prince George. Now we are going to dig in and see what are some quick wins for us, things

we initiate right away.” Some will be advocacy-based, some long-term, and some money has been set aside for some specific projects that may need an injection of funds. “It has been very positive with lots of good work,” Green said of the project so far. Other members of the committee include councillors Garth Frizzell, Brian Skakun and Dave Wilbur, Sharon Davalovsky, Miles McGuire, Ken Newell, Brian Pepper, Supt.Eric Stubbs, Malachy Tohill, Rob Van Adrichem and, as staff support, Chris Bone, Rob Whitwham and Wendy Fauth.
