Coroner identifies accident victim By Barb Brouwer
market news staff
The BC Coroners Service has identified the man who died Aug. 3 as a result of head injuries sustained after diving into the Adams River. Robert Bruce Boyd, 49, from Kamloops, was enjoying an afternoon with his family about 800 metres upstream from the SquilaxAnglemont Road bridge. Boyd dove into a river pool and, when he failed to resurface, family and friends went in after him and
got him to shore. RCMP Const. Jonathan Spooner says the Chase detachment received a report that the man had sustained serious injuries. He says when he arrived at the scene, the man was unconscious and had a very weak pulse. Shuswap Search and Rescue (SAR) search manager John Schut received a call for assistance at 2:30 p.m., responding with nine members of the team. Schut says that by the time SAR arrived, paramedics had hiked into
the area just below the gorge with a stretcher. It took a combined effort on the part of Chase RCMP, BC Ambulance and SAR to transport the critically injured man overland to a BC Ambulance helicopter in a staging area just west of the bridge. But, despite efforts by paramedics, Boyd succumbed to his injuries before the helicopter could depart. Spooner calls Boyd’s death a tragedy and adds that, from a police perspective, it’s a reminder that diving into unknown waters is ex-

The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate this death. Police issue caution about unknown waters Continued from pg. A1 Spooner has high praise for the members of SAR, who he describes as being a great help both during the rescue and once the matter was turned over to the coroner’s office.
Woman rescued SAR was kept busy over the August long weekend, also respond-
ing to a call for help on the Enderby Cliffs Sunday night. Ten members responded to the call for assistance that came in at 9 p.m. Schut says a women had broken her leg at the top of the Enderby Cliffs on a portion of a trail that was marked “closed.” “She broke her ankle quite badly in two places,” he says, estimating
the local woman to be in her late 30s or early 40s. “We needed the rope team to pull her out of a really, really steep, gnarly trail.” Once her rescuers had her strapped onto a stretcher, Schut says it took all 10 SAR members to pull the stretcher out of the ugly terrain. “We transferred the stretcher onto the wheel and hiked to a waiting ATV for a trip down to
the ambulance,” he said, noting the woman was co-operative and very grateful. Schut, a Salmon Valley farmer, says the rescue mission took about four hours from the time of the call until the time the crew was back at SAR headquarters. “I got home at three in the morning and climbed into bed as the morning milking began,” he says.

TRANSMISSION FLUID EXCHANGE – SERVICE: YES IT’S A REAL SERVICE ver time, the little “hooks” in the oil wear out, through a process known as shear. When shear occurs, the transmission will begin to slip and generate huge amounts of heat. It won’t be long before the transmission is damaged from excessive temperatures. When you have the transmission serviced normally, it replaces only a part of the worn-out fluid. The rest is left in, which can allow the transmission to slip and wear. A fluid exchange service replaces nearly all of the fluid in the transmission, which helps the transmission clutches hold tigher. This reduces heat, and can keep the transmission working for years to come. The best type of transmission service includes both the basic filter replacement and a fluid exchange service. The filter replacement service allows the technician to examine the material in the sump, to identify potential problems and make educated recommendations for your transmission. Then the fluid exchange replaces the worn fluid, so your transmission can have a reasonable chance to last for many years. In fact, most technicians will readily admit that if you have your cars automatic transmission serviced every two years or so, you’ll probably never need the transmission rebuilt, as long as you own your car. That’s a worthwhile service investment by any standards!

Another Balmoral crash Rcmp R E P O RT One man was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a two-vehicle accident at Highway 1 and Balmoral Road Saturday, Aug. 3. Police were called out at 11:12 a.m. and, once on scene, found a man trapped in a demolished Ford Taurus that had been struck by a GMC truck before being pinned against a light pole. The driver of the Ford, who had pulled in front of the truck, causing the ‘Tbone’ collision, was freed from the vehicle by first responders. The driver of the truck was uninjured.
Fueled by booze
Police say a man’s complaint of an assault by a hatchet-wielding assailant was fuelled by alcohol, not fact. Salmon Arm RCMP responded to the alleged
assault at Highway 1 and Lakeshore Drive at about 11:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Just over three hours later, at 2:15 a.m., police intervened in an altercation at Outlaws Bar on Lakeshore Drive, after observing a brawl between several groups of men. Two of the men were arrested on scene and jailed until sober.

On Friday, Aug. 2, police recovered two vehicles believed to have been stolen from Kamloops. At approximately 2 p.m., Salmon Arm RCMP searched a property in the 2200 block of Eagle Bay Road. As a result, police recovered a stolen mini-van. The other vehicle was later located at a second location. Police are still investigating, but charges are pending against the property’s owner.
Expensive pranks
On Aug. 4, police responded to a break and enter/mischief complaint at a local business where suspects had used vehicles left on the property to damage the business and merchandise. The culprits used a crane in an attempt to hoist a truck onto another truck, but left it hanging in the air. Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime-Stoppers.

Ten-year contract proposed
Minister: Contends not provoking a ‘showdown.’ By Tom Fletcher black press
The B.C. government is pressing ahead with its goal of a 10-year agreement with B.C. teachers, appointing a “public administrator” to replace school trustees on the board of their provincial bargaining agency. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the change is temporary, and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will continue to play an important role in talks with teachers and support staff. BCPSEA will be under the direction of Michael Marchbank,
CEO of the Hospital Employers’ Association, when talks with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation resume in September. Fassbender’s announcement surprised school trustees around the province. He said he spoke to or left messages for trustees on the BCPSEA executive before making the announcement in Vancouver last week. The move is to meet a demand of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to bargain directly with the B.C. government, Fassbender said. The government also intends to eliminate essential services rules that keep schools open
with minimum staff during strikes. Fassbender denied the suggestion he is setting up a “showdown” with teachers that would shut down schools and turn the public against unions. The structural change is needed to achieve the stability for students and parents promised by Premier Christy Clark, he said. “It’s not about pitting them against us,” Fassbender said. “It’s about finding a new road map where we can achieve that goal.” A two-year contract extension and wage freeze imposed by the government on teach-
ers expired at the end of June. Jim Iker, who took over this spring as BCTF president, told media Thursday his union isn’t opposed to a long-term settlement, as long as more resources are there to improve classroom conditions. The BCTF is returning to court this fall to seek restoration of bargaining for class size and special needs support. School support staff represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees are to resume negotiations for a new contract this month. CUPE employees have not had a raise in four years.

Fire anniversary gives perspective
On July 30, it will be the 10 year anniversary of the beginning of the McLure Wildfire. If you resided here at the time you’ll remember the evacuations; the fear for your loved ones, the fear for your home, and the incredible stress of not knowing if you in fact would have a home to return to. You’ll also remember how some of the people that we turned to at the time were not able to take the lead, and how others stepped forward from the background to take the reins. However, that all happened a decade ago, and it’s obvious that today residents of the valley are noting the 10 year milestone without too much fanfare. We agree with the popular opinion of most folks, that the summer of 2003 is now history, this is 2013, and we have moved on. You can’t change the past, but you can certainly put a lot of effort into the ‘now’ to improve the future. However, I’d like to share a few observations from my own personal experience with the McLure Wildfire in the hopes that it might help others when faced with great adversity (my husband and I were one of the 72 who lost homes and property during the fire). Here are a few observations that we have come to since the summer of 2003; • One wildfire is good enough for a lifetime. It was one hell of an experience, and we’re very glad it’s over. • Lives are what matters – all the rest is just stuff, and stuff can be replaced. • Loss of mementoes and family memorabilia is sad, but do we really need to see an item to remember why we kept it in the first place? Aren’t all those good memories still there at the back of our minds if we just take the time to bring them forward and enjoy them once again? Would that stuff have the same sentimental value to someone else, or maybe not? • Picking up the pieces starts one piece at a time. Take it slow, be determined, make your goals attainable, be tenacious about getting there, and most of all don’t let your frustration or anger get the better of you. • Share your triumphs and your failures with someone you care about, and who cares about you. • Don’t be shy about shedding a few tears now and then, it’s all part of the healing process. • Take some time to realize what is really important in your life – family, loved ones, friends, pets. Inanimate objects don’t count. • Be kind, be compassionate, love fearlessly, and find that golden thread of humour when the world throws you a cow pie. • And, lastly, life is what you make of it, not what it makes of you. - From Jill Hayward, Barriere Star Journal

OpiniOn
Concerns too big to express The other day I was speaking to some tourists from Norway who stopped and asked if it was worth while going out to the Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park at this time of the year to see if there were any sockeye salmon in the Adams River. I had to stop for a moment and think about just what I should say to them. Part of me wanted to launch into a whole tirade about how the sockeye are in serious – very serious trouble – and how the federal government doesn’t seem willing to do much about the situation other than initiate a multi-million dollar commission (Cohen) and then proceed to do absolute nothing about following through with any of its recommendations – and how we don’t really have a clue why the salmon are in such dire straits and how the salmon are in more serious trouble than the government is letting on and how Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) seems to have a hard time knowing – or at least letting the public know just what the numbers of returning fish are at
The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray any given time. I could have gone on about any number of problems the salmon are facing, but in the end, all I said was “No, not really. The salmon run doesn’t happen until late in the fall, around the middle of October.” I wasn’t sure if they really needed, or wanted, to hear how the salmon have been hard hit by disease, climate change, poachers, commercial overfishing and salmon farms which some are saying have introduced diseases from non-indigenous (Atlantic) farmed stock to the wild stock. Or, how scientists are attributing the decline in salmon numbers (especially in the Adams) to all sorts of different things, the theory of
the day being poor survival rates of juvenile salmon while they’re in the ocean. According to a number of studies, not only are young fish suffering high mortality rates as they move from the Fraser River into saltwater conditions, they are also finding less food to eat in the Pacific Ocean during the years they spend maturing into adults. To someone like me, who has no scientific background or understanding, this theory sounds as good as any other. The problem, as far as I can see, is that there is no real sound scientific evidence to substantiate any of their theories because the government has simply not been willing to put sufficient money into finding out what the problems really are – they’ve pretty much maintained a head-in-the-sand attitude to the whole declining salmon stock numbers issue. To make matters worse, there is virtually no substantive legislation to protect wild salmon stocks in B.C. The Fish Protection Act is based on voluntary compliance and is focused on urban streams. The For-
est Practices Code, recently gutted of environmental regulations, has simply failed to protect wild salmon habitat, while the Federal Fisheries Act fails to prevent logging and mining practices which also contribute to fish habitat damage and loss in general. All the while, the provincial Fisheries ministry, which seems to have little initiative to protect wild salmon habitat, appears to be looking more toward a massive expansion of fish farms along the coast. I could have gone on and on about all the issues facing the salmon, but I didn’t. Why? Maybe it was because they were tourists. Or, maybe it was because a part of me is ashamed of our government and how they are dealing with the whole sockeye crisis on the Adams River. Maybe I didn’t express to them my concerns because I couldn’t put into words just how worried I am about the future of the sockeye. Maybe the next tourist who stops and asks me about the sockeye run at Roderick HaigBrown Provincial Park won’t be so lucky.

Blues route leads to Notch Hill Hall A throng of happy people strolled about Notch Hill Community Park during a Routes and Blues outreach event held Saturday, Aug. 3. Attendees learned or refreshed their memories on the history of the area, visiting Notch Hill School, which was built in 1921, and the white church. Inside the school, a historic train model of Notch Hill during the era of the steam pushers was set up by model railroaders Norm Kinsella and Lee Fraser. Everyone enjoyed eating a delicious baron-of-
beef-on-a-bun meal, and listening and dancing to the musical concert featuring Sherman Doucette. The Kettle Valley Railway and Revelstoke Railway Museum sponsored a raffle that had five lucky winners, as well as a lucky 50/50 winner. Organized as part of Routes and Blues, the Notch Hill committee offered thanks to their festival partners, to CPR for their sponsorship, and the volunteers who worked so hard to promote, organize and create a warm, friendly atmosphere for all the community participants and visitors.
Nurse practitioner to provide health care A new model of health-care will be available in the South Shuswap in the near future. The Sorrento & Area Community Association has been successful in its application to bring a nurse practitioner to the community. The nurse practitioner will be located in space above Munro’s Sorrento Prescriptions. The position is being established in a part-
nership between Interior Health (IH) and the association. The association offers thanks to Dr. Melany Dyer and community partners, who have provided support for this project. The association suggests residents be on the lookout for more information to become available in the next month or so, announcing when the nurse practitioner’s office
will open to the public. Nurse Practitioners began working in Interior Health in 2005, with support from, and collaboration with, a “community of practice” set up to integrate them into the healthcare system. In an NP/family physician primary healthcare model, nurse practitioners augment services provided by doctors and bring a patient-centred perspec-
tive to the health-care team. Patients who received this type of care in other areas of IH reported feeling empowered, included in decision-making and able to become active members of their own health-care team, says the IH website. Doctors reported enhanced job satisfaction in the sharing of decision-making, responsibility and workload.

SWAT airs water concerns Potential water contamination risks including geese, old septic tanks and silt were the focus of an early summer meeting hosted by the Shuswap Water Action Team (SWAT). SWAT president Ray Nadeau listed 12 major ongoing threats. He stressed the only way to properly protect the water supply is to get help from all levels of governments and local agencies. Nadeau said he believes this could be accomplished through a permanently funded Shuswap Watershed Board, similar to the one created in the Okanagan Lake Watershed. Flood debris in the spring was brought forward as a concern, but minutes of the meeting suggest the biggest threat is caused
by silt from logging operations that can remain in the water for long periods of time. Low turbidity is essential for drinking water treatment systems to work properly and kill or disable harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites, said Nadeau. Also discussed was the threat to drinking water posed by some septic systems. Dry wells throughout the area allow sewage to go through a hole in the ground and, from there, directly into the groundwater, notes the minutes. Poorly maintained and leaking septic systems and systems that flood during freshet were also discussed. “The new B.C. regulations for septic systems are inadequate to protect our water from septic failures and pol-

lution both for existing and new installations,” the minutes state. It was also noted at the meeting that Interior Health Authority has little enforcement ability and is no longer inspecting or monitoring septic systems. Other concerns include the replacement of smaller, older cabins with larger homes, without a change in the septic system. At the meeting, resident Samara Sonmor suggested the Columbia Shuswap Regional District has the authority to create bylaws to address issues that are not covered by provincial regulations. But CSRD South Shuswap director Paul Demenok, said that while it could be done, it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Shallow water, increased development
and the large population of shore birds were listed as having an impact on water quality in Blind Bay. Last year high e-coli levels caused the closure of Blind Bay to the public beach. High numbers of waterfowl in the area was later determined to be the cause. Last year Shuswap Lake Integrated Planning Project (SLIPP) removed abandoned docks and other debris from the bay. But more debris was brought in during freshet. A number of SWAT members expressed interest in helping to keep the beaches clean if some kind of event could be co-ordinated. While threats to the water supply continue, SWAT is confident steps can be taken improve and maintain water quality.

n Naturalist Trish Wallensteen, centre, takes participants on a Routes and Blues guided hike Saturday morning at John Evdokimoff Park near Little White Lake. There’s still time to join one of the Roots and Blues Festival events that combine hiking with great food and entertainment.
All routes lead to music The 2013 Routes and Blues trail has already taken fans to three sites, where hikers have followed up their outdoors experience with good food and fine entertainment. The trail continues today, Aug. 9 when fans can head out to the Kingfisher Interpretive centre to meander along the Shuswap River and learn about the remarkable interconnection between salmon and everything that lives and grows in the region. Meet at the Kingfisher Interpretive centre at Mable Lake at 10 a.m. Later dine at the local hall and enjoy an organic disco with No Sinner. Tomorrow, hikers will walk the waterfall loop trail of Albas Falls, an important site in Secwepemc Nation Territory. Meet at the falls trailhead at Albas Provincial Falls at 10 a.m. In the evening, go to Seymour Arm’s Don Fink Memorial Park to hear with Current Swell and Salmon Arm’s Million Dollars in Pennies. Visit the Lower Flume Trail on the Adams River on Sunday, Aug. 11. Famous for the Adams River sockeye salmon run, hikers will walk in the footsteps of Secwepemc Nation leaders, who cared for the Shuswap for thousands of years. Meet at the Lower Flume trailhead on Holding Road at 10 a.m. Head to Quaaout Lodge and broaden your horizons with a concert featuring George Leach. Arm in the scavenger hunt-styled discovery contest before heading over to Wednesday on the Wharf. Pick up the special self-guided packet from the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Bay Interpretive Centre (SABNES), where members will share their knowledge and love of the area. Noted Secwepemc storyteller, Kenthen Thomas, has joined this year’s Routes and Blues interpretive hikes as trail storyteller-in-residence. The interpretive hiking series – part of this year’s Roots and Blues Outreach Project – is made possible thanks in part to a grant through the BC Parks Enhancement Fund. Son of late, beloved elder Mary, Kenthen brings a rare ability to bridge the contemporary with the traditional, captivating people of all ages. His tales render forest landscapes into settings for a vivid, but little-known history of the country’s first people. His dramatic and often humorous retelling of traditional Secwepemc stories and teachings fosters a deeper respect for the land and all our relations. The hikes also provide a great introduction to the wonderful elements of the Shuswap lifestyle. For more information, visit www.shuswaptrails. com or www.routesandblues.ca. Attend any of the hikes to enter the Weekly Summer Challenge Contest for a chance to win great prizes and experience the Shuswap in a whole new way

Aiming to share kindness
Random acts: Next project takes place on Aug. 29. By Martha Wickett OBSERVER STAFF
Thoughts of how tough Christmas can be for some families led Michelle Eddy to create a group in Salmon Arm that’s all about giving. Two years ago, Eddy created the Random Acts of Kindness – Salmon Arm group on Facebook. Its mission? “The intent of this group is to give kindness to others in our community and inspire each other to pay it forward with other random and not-so-random acts of kindness,” states the website. “It is also a place to make a donation... to help each other in times of need, to create a sense of community, and, if nothing else, maybe earn some good karma.” About 460 people now belong to the group, which has been helping out in the community in a variety of ways. “One of the rules of the group is everything has to be offered for free,” she explains. “It’s not a buy and sell... ” Eddy notes there are all kinds of limits and barriers to how people can access the resources of the community, so she does what she can to help. About a year-and-ahalf ago, a young man posted that he was wondering if anyone had any bread or milk. “I private messaged him and got a little bit more information. He was in his early twenties, struggling. Any young 20-year-old looking for bread and milk is obviously in need,” Eddy remarks. That interaction led to collecting donations, including gift cards, that filled the trunk of her vehicle for him. She adds that she’s always cautious as she doesn’t want members of the group to feel taken advantage of. More recently, after reading an article in the Observer about the need for food and supplies at Salmon Arm’s

Big hearts: Michelle Eddy, left, and Colleen Sawatzky get ready on July 4 to take a big truckload of donations to the women’s emergency shelter after collecting and sorting them. women’s emergency shelter, Eddy put out the call. “I posted a ‘hey, who wants to get together and do a donation on my Facebook group?” The response was amazing, she says. “I was really overwhelmed, actually. We filled up the whole back of my truck. It was a phenomenal response I ended up getting.” She let the women’s shelter know she would be coming with the donations, “but at that point they had no idea how much stuff. When we came with the truck full, they said ‘wow!’... They were overwhelmed, we were overwhelmed...” Sara Inskip, crisis intervention support worker at the emergency shelter, said it was
“absolutely amazing” to see the community come together with the donations. On the heels of that success, the Random Acts of Kindness group has launched a similar plan. Eddy will be looking to fill her truck once again for the emergency shelter, but this time with thought to upcoming school days and mothers with children. On Thursday, Aug. 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Eddy’s ‘Big Blue Truck’ will be parked at a central location still to be announced, where people can bring donations. Items needed include: • cereal – hot and cold, • baking supplies, • juice boxes, • granola bars, • fruit snacks, • crackers, • cookies, • sandwich fillings such as peanut
butter, jam, cheese, tuna, deli meat, • condiments such as mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup salad dressings, • pantry staples such as oil, vinegar, spices sauces, • canned fruit, • dried fruit, • sandwich bags, • reusable lunch bags, • pancake mix, • syrup, • bread for freezing, and • meats for meals or for the freezer. Eddy hopes that more people will continue to take part in the projects of the ‘random acts’ group. The last time the group collected donations for the shelter, probably about a dozen or so people participated, she said. “My idea is the more numbers we have, the more sharing and giving can go around. Think what 450 can accomplish.”

The participants love the opportunity to go out on a fruit-picking adventure and take fruit home with them. This is also a wonderful opportunity for fresh air, exercise, socialization, healthy food and increased mental wellbeing. The Fruit Tree Project and other gleaning projects are important additions to any community because they reduce food waste, keep wildlife out of backyards, and provide food for those in need. Gleaning programs exist in several communities across the Interior Health region. To find out if there is a gleaning

Waste not, want not – everybody wins with gleaning. I remember seeing my very first cherry tree the first summer I lived in Kelowna. It was an such an amazing sight that my eyes actually welled up with tears! You see, cherries just happen to be on my top five list of favourite fruits. I couldn’t believe how much fruit grew on a single tree and how lucky was I to be able to take a few steps out my door and eat such beautiful and delicious fruit. I was even more amazed to learn that many Okanagan residents who own fruit trees do not harvest all the fruit. I thought about how much food goes to waste in the Okanagan – hundreds of thousands of pounds. This is very unfortunate considering there are so many people who do not have enough food to eat. In the winter of 2011, a few other volunteers and I decided it was time to start a gleaning project. Gleaning is when people gather together to harvest fruits and vegetables and then donate the food to organizations that serve people in need, like the food bank. It just made sense to have a gleaning project in the Okanagan – an area that produces so much food. After six months of planning and hard work, the Central Okanagan Fruit Tree Project (http://www. okanaganfood.com/ fruit-tree-project/) was born. In our first season, we picked and donated more than 5,000 pounds of produce to 15 different organizations. Our volunteers picked cherries, apricots, plums, grapes, apples, and even tomatoes. It is incredible how the community has embraced the Fruit Tree Project. This year, we are on target to double the amount of fruit do-

Annual count: Naturalists surprised to find so many. By Jessica Klymchuk OBSERVER STAFF
The number of young Western Grebes in Salmon Arm is greater than its ever been. Ed and Monica Dahl did their weekly count on July 25, only to find 191 young grebes and 212 adults. They counted about 114 families, although Ed said it’s hard to tell because the families don’t always stay close together at this time. The number of young grebes is higher than recorders have counted for any year since keeping track of the Salmon Arm population. Adult population numbers, however, are not out of the ordinary. The Dahls are with the Shuswap Naturalists and the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society. A little over a month ago they found no young grebes and were sur-

Ed called it quite a revelation that so many appeared so quickly. At that time the couple only expected to see 50 or 60 young ones turn up, so finding 191 was another surprise. “Many of the parent birds still had young riding on their backs,
and some of the young were obviously hatched a few weeks ago as they are now about half the size of the parents,” he said. The count was done on a calm morning with good visibility and few boaters around. Ed said the nesting areas weren’t obvious, possibly because
the reed canary grass seemed to rearrange during high water in 2012. “This year even the red-winged blackbirds seemed to have difficulty finding last year’s dead cattails to support the early nesting, which usually supplies habitat for the first batch of young,” he said.

Green funding for band The Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band (LSLIB) is one of several B.C. First Nations that will be receiving funding to pursue green energy. The band is getting $28,560 for a Clean Energy Options Feasibility Study. The provincial government notes that the funding is intended to establish an opportunity for the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band to establish direction and a strategy in pursuit of developing a community-based clean energy project. Four potential renewable energy projects will be assessed: run-of-river hydro

Birch aims for top Tory By Roger Knox BLaCk Press
A Shuswap man has thrown his hat in the ring for the top executive posting with the B.C. Conservative party. Tom Birch of Salmon Arm has announced he’ll seek the presidency at the party’s annual general meeting next month in Vernon. “I believe that British Columbia needs the voice of the B.C. Conservative Party now
more than ever,” said Birch. “Having considered how I might most effectively serve my party and my province, I believe that I could do that best as president.” Birch, project manager for a Vancouverbased forestry software company, ran under the Conservative banner in May’s provincial election in the Shuswap riding. Birch placed third behind Greg Kyllo (Liberals) and Steve Gunner (NDP).
“We have begun already to prepare for the next election,” said Birch. “This coming year, we will be setting the pace and direction. There are great things ahead for us and for British Columbia.” The annual general meeting is slated for Sept. 13 and 14 at the Best Western Plus Vernon Lodge. The party is in need of a new leader after John Cummins stepped down following the provincial election.
power, a biomass district energy system, wind and solar thermal. The latest investment from B.C.’s First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund is intended to assist eight First Nations communities across the province to pursue their clean-energy goals. Among the projects supported by the latest round of funding are: • A feasibility study toward a hybrid electricity solution for the Nemaiah Valley-based Xeni Gwet’in First Nations. • Uchucklesaht Tribe Government’s continued assessment, design and permitting of

Heart doesn’t belong to city By Jessica Klymchuk market news staff
The heart was still beating, but not for long. Soon Salmon Arm will officially retire the slogan, “Heart of the Shuswap.” A bylaw will be prepared for council’s consideration to remove the slogan that remains in the official community plan. The Development and Planning Services Committee passed the
recommendation Tuesday. The discussion came to the table on Jan. 9, 2012 when council resolved to discontinue the use of the slogan in response to a request from Barry Stokes, president of the Sorrento and Area Community Association. In December 2011, Stokes gave council a presentation on the logo, “Heart of the Shuswap” being used by the Sorrento associa-

He requested that Salmon Arm discontinue the slogan as it had been Sorrento’s since as early as 1890. “Heart of the Shuswap” was removed from Salmon Arm’s website and signage then, but remained in the OCP as the original resolution occurred two months after its adoption in 2011. Through the city’s strategic plan process it was realized the amendment is needed.

INFORMATION DESIGNED TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE YOUR WELLBEING
Could your home be making you sick? Constant fatigue, headaches, recurring upper respiratory infections. Do these symptoms sound familiar to you? If you are experiencing ongoing symptoms of some mysterious illness you may not be a hypochondriac at all -- your home may be making you sick. It may be hard to believe that the place you call your sanctuary actually could be the breeding ground for unseen germs and other dangers, but there are many potential pathogens that could be taking up residence alongside you and your family. Kitchen The kitchen is one area of the home that could be teeming with microscopic invaders. According to researchers at New York University, the dirtiest place in the entire home is the kitchen sink. From discarded pieces of food to raw juices from meat, the kitchen sink comes in contact with many different substances, all of which may harbor bacteria. One may think that water constantly running in the sink would clean it effectively. This is not the case. Use a germicide or a bleach-andwater solution and a brush to scrub down the sink a few times a week. Do not use a sponge used for washing dishes; otherwise you can transfer bacteria to silverware and plates, risking infection. Kitchen sponges should be discarded after about a week of use. However, if you are environmentally minded, the only ways to effectively kill bacteria hiding in porous sponges is to microwave them on high for a minute or run them through a dishwasher cycle.

Building materials Unless you have purchased a new home and were involved with the building process, it could be difficult to know which building materials were used to construct your home. Certain materials once deemed safe are now banned. If your home was built between 1920 and 1978, there may be asbestos in the home. It was primarily used as an insulating material. Although asbestos in small amounts may not be harmful, breathing in high levels of asbestos over an extended period of time may increase your risk for cancer and respiratory ailments. Lead is also commonly found in older homes. Lead was a main component of paints in the past. Some homes even feature lead water pipes. Young children are highly susceptible to lead poisoning. The Environmental Protection Agency says that nearly 900,000 American children suffer
from lead poisoning each year. Certain adhesives, carpets, vinyl materials, and varnishes can give off VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. Products that you use in your home every day emit gases that may be harmful, both right away and after extended exposure. These may cause anything from nose and throat irritation to memory loss. allergens Water is a necessity to sustain life on this planet. While water can have many different positive attributes, water is also the culprit in helping to breed potentially dangerous organisms in and around the house. Water damage around the house may foster the growth of mold and other organisms. Inhaling mold spores can trigger allergies or increase the risk of illness. Insects and rodents also tend to gravitate to moist areas of the
home, and waste from pests may lead to respiratory ailments and other serious conditions. You can prevent many illnesses in the home by addressing any underlying water issues. Fix leaks and use a dehumidifier to dry out the interior of the home. chemicals Home-cleaning products, pesticides, fertilizers and paints can each contribute to unhealthy air in the home. These items may also cause irritation to the eyes and skin. Look for alternatives to harsh chemicals in your household to limit the amount of items that could be polluting your living spaces. Many people assume illnesses are the result of outside factors. However, there are many things lurking inside the home that can contribute to myriad health symptoms.

Chase Amateur’s lens turns to prize By Cavelle Layes
MARKET NEWS STAff
After 40 years capturing life through a lens, Don Roach is taking his hobby to the next level. While he can’t remember exactly what it was that got him started taking photographs, Roach says his love for capturing the moment is what has kept him going so long. He considers himself to be “very much an amateur,” and never intended to use his photos as a way to generate money. But after some persistent urging from his wife, Roach finally decided to enter a few of his photos in a contest. And though he didn’t expect anything to come of it, Roach is among the 73 finalists – chosen from close to 2,000 entries – in the 2013 Amateur Photographer of the Year contest, sponsored by London Drugs, Black Press and the Abbotsford International Airshow. A surprised Roach says his submitted shots included two of his wife and two of airplanes – subjects that his camera seems to focus often. Despite making it into a place occupied by the best in the province,

n Dan Roach, pictured above in a photo illustration, is vying for B.C.’s amateur photographer of the year. Roach is somewhat reserved about how he will make out in the final round. “I heard they have these big bazooka cameras,” Roach said, “I just have my little pointand-shoot Canon.” While competing against expensive photo gear might be daunting, Roach knows how to get the best out of whatever he’s shooting. Testament to this is the fact that one of the photos that landed him in the
finals was taken with his cell phone. The final leg of the contest will take place at the Abbotsford Airshow, and will consist of 10 photo submissions covering at least three categories: a shot of a plane in flight, a static plane and a person. Roach says he has been capturing planes on film since he was a kid. In fact, it happens to be one of his favourite subjects. “I visited the air show
about five years back so I know the layout,” said Roach who, despite his experience, is still concerned about the in-air shot. While one of his submissions was exactly this, he explained that he had taken it from a mountain side, which gave him a higher vantage point and allowed him to get a background that consisted of more than sky. The other downside to the show, he explained, is that all three days have the same content. Thinking ahead for some more unique photo opportunities, Roach decided to head to the event early. This, he explained, would allow him to take photos of the pilots registering their planes, and hopefully let him get something that would stand out from the others. Roach will be taking his laptop along for the ride, and plans to spend the third day, which is expected to be more rainy, editing his photos on-site. If nothing else, Roach is looking forward to a good air show. Whether or not he will enter the contest again next year, Roach
Girls arrested for theft from RV Three teenage girls are awaiting a court date following a report of a suspected break in. Chase RCMP received a phone call July 18 from the owner of an RV at Express Point Road. The owner reported that their window had been pried open, items were stolen and the place was a mess. Neighbors said they had seen three young girls on bikes near the property the day before but did not recognize them. As police were investigating,
RCmp report the three teenage girls returned to the home where they were arrested for possession of stolen property. Cpl. Mark Skotnicki said it is believed the girls, later determined to be from Kamloops, may have been living in the RV. All of them were released into parental care and are awaiting a court date. Skotnicki said they
could not charge the girls with breaking and entering as no one had actually seen the girls go in. However, they did have some of the stolen goods on them, so some charges were laid. Most of the stolen items were returned to the RV owner, also from Kamloops. Skotnicki said most of what was stolen was food,
liquor and some valuables.
Gun shots On Aug. 3 at about 10 p.m., police received reports of gun shots in the 7000 block of Little Shuswap. Police say when a neighbour went to investigate, he found a number of 20-year-olds shooting skeet plates. He informed the men they were on private property and they apologized before driving off in their pickup. The truck had Alberta See Avoiding on page 28

It was reported that a driver was in the eastbound, ‘slow’ lane when a deer ran in front of the vehicle. Sgt. Gary Heebner reported the driver braked hard and
missed the deer. However, a Hyundai Santa Fe travelling close behind rear-ended the vehicle, causing between $2,000 and $3,000 in damage to each. There were no injuries, but both vehicles were towed away and the driver of the Hyundai was ticketed for driving too close.

BLIX, FREDA MARY (Nee LAWSON) October 17, 1930 - August 1, 2013 With deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Freda Mary Blix, beautiful giving wife, nurturing mom/ mum and generous loving grandmother (“Nana”) on August 1 at Shuswap Lake General Hospital. After a short but valiant struggle with Myelodysplasia, she exited our lives the same way she chose to live hers – with dignity, compassion, endless grace and tremendous love of family. Surrounded by loved ones in her last weeks of life and with kind concern for those around her never wavering, she fought tenaciously to beat her illness. She is predeceased by loving parents, William and Ethel Lawson; and survived by husband, Trygve Mathias Blix; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Arnold Hardbottle; daughter, Ann-Marie; son, Grant; son-in-law Kermit; grandchildren, Austin, Ashton & Ashlie; and cousins Stuart and Peter. Born and raised in Leeds, England, Freda saw the ravages of WW II from a safer distance than many, commuting frequently to ‘Overdale’ the beloved family cottage in Burtersett, Yorkshire. In the late 50’s traveling to Canada by herself at age 28 was a bold new adventure that changed her life forever when she met and married her husband of 52 years, Trygve in the Northwestern town of Ft. St. John, B.C. By 1964, she was a busy mother to a toddler and a newborn, while resettling in Norway, birth place and home to Trygve. In 1966 the family of four moved back to Canada, this time Burnaby, BC where they remained until 1987. Her favorite past-time was long summers spent at their treasured hand crafted log cabin at Charlotte Lake. Freda also loved retirement in the beautiful Shuswap, where, for over 25 years, her appreciation for the natural outdoors, time with family and gift for cooking and gardening remained an integral part of her life. She will be so missed. Mom/Nana, you will never be forgotten. Online condolences can be sent through Freda’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com
FROESS RUDY Rudolph Jacob Froess passed away peacefully at his residence in Deep Creek on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the age of 79 years. A family graveside service was held at Mt. Ida Cemetery, Salmon Arm, on Thursday afternoon, August 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Jack Bowers the funeral celebrant. Born in Humbolt, Saskatchewan on December 15, 1933, he moved to the Salmon Arm area with his parents in 1945. Rudy lived a quiet life, his small home and property was always kept spotless; he continued his daily hikes into the hills and outdoors. Rudy retired from a long career of logging, gaining much respect for his work ethic. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Katie, and a brother Philip. Rudy is survived by his sister, Edna (Dave) Jackson of Blue Ridge, Alberta; 3 brothers, Richard of Vernon, Clarence (Margaret) of Enderby, David (Beth) of Salmon Arm; many nieces and nephews. On line condolences may be sent to Rudy’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com Funeral arrangements were in the care of Bowers Funeral Home, Salmon Arm. JAMES STUART HARVIE 1949 – 2013 Passed away peacefully at home on July 26th after a brave struggle with cancer. Jim is sorely missed by his sister Patricia Harvie and his black Labrador Retrievers Dancer, Power and Ransom. He is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Sally Harvie. Jim is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins across the United States and Canada After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in Business Administration, Jim had a long career in the financial industry in Toronto, primarily with CIBC Wood Gundy. Known to many as ‘Harv’, he loved golfing, mainly at Lambton, Beacon Hall and The Palms. He had a brief, but expensive, foray into thoroughbred horse racing, with a horse named Hello Hello, who he raced in partnership with three friends. Duck hunting was another pursuit where Jim enjoyed the camaraderie of his pals. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Jim retired back to his western roots, settling in the Shuswap region of British Columbia. Finally, he had time to be home and have dogs. He loved his black Labrador Retrievers and enjoyed field retriever trialing with them throughout the USA and Canada. Jim is terribly missed by Patti Kiernan, Bill Cox, Mickey Rawlins and many other friends in the field retriever circle. Jim tackled his bucket list as he went along. Although his life was cut short, he lived life large. A funeral service has been held. As an expression of sympathy, friends who wish may send memorial donations to the Cancer Agency of their choice, or to Ducks Unlimited, http://www.ducks.ca/how-youcan-help/donations/donate-now/ Online condolences may be sent through Jim’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com

GARDENS
High Mountain Farm
We purchased the farm in 2010 and when we moved in there were no flowers beds to speak of. The pond area was built in the spring of 2010 for Doris’s birthday. The shade garden with the trellis is an ongoing project. Our goal was to create outdoor rooms to enjoy and attract hummingbirds. Doris really likes making her own hanging baskets. Hummingbird shot was taken by our son-in-law two weeks ago.
