Murderer jailed for lies BY ADVOCATE STAFF A former Red Deer man already serving a life sentence for first-degree murder was sentenced to four years in prison in Red Deer provincial court on Tuesday.
In August, Christopher Martin Fleig, 29, pleaded guilty to three counts of giving contradictory evidence while testifying at his own trial, as well as at the preliminary hearing for three other men charged in connection with the same incident. Fleig and the others were arrested in connection with the gang-style mur-
der of Red Deer resident Brandon Neil Prevey, 29. Prevey died in a hail of bullets outside a home on Ibbotson Close in the early hours of April 5, 2009. Fleig was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, the mandatory sentence under the Criminal Code.
“As a result of his contradictory evidence, three others were discharged from the crime,” said Crown prosecutor Robin Snider. She said Fleig’s actions were planned and deliberate.

CIVIC ELECTION FORUM
Mayoral hopefuls make their case BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF City debt and downtown parking were among the hodgepodge of issues addressed by candidates jostling for the mayor’s job at a forum on Tuesday. The five hopefuls — William Horn, Cindy Jefferies, Chad Mason, Dennis Trepanier and Tara Veer — were all present and shared their platform before taking questions from a packed auditorium at City Centre Stage. Explaining the city’s debt of $199 million was the first question from the floor. Veer, a third-term councillor, said she takes a balanced approach to the city’s debt. She said there’s a trend for Alberta municipalities to go above and beyond the debt limit.

Union donation to Wyntjes’ campaign three years ago questioned BY PAUL COWLEY ADVOCATE STAFF A three-year-old donation by a union local representing Red Deer Advocate employees has been questioned in the local blogosphere. In 2010, the Media and Communications Workers of Alberta Local 30400 gave then-rookie council candidate Dianne Wyntjes a $100 campaign donation after the longtime executive for the Canadian Union of Public Employees made a presentation to the local. It was the only time such a donation to a Red Deer candidate has been made by the union, which represents

about 160 media employees in Red Deer, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, said Jack Wilson, who was local president at the time. “Unions have historically supported candidates in all levels of elections, federal, provincial and municipal, who are friendly to labour, who support labour views,” said Wilson. For example, the Media and Communications Workers of Alberta provincial organization provided a donation to a Calgary provincial candidate more than a decade ago. No donations were made by the union local in this municipal election. The whole issue of political donations was discussed last month by the

union and will be brought back to a future executive meeting for review, said Mary-Ann Barr, local president and Advocate assistant city editor. Barr was not on the union’s executive in 2010, nor was she present at the meeting when the donation was voted on by the seven to 10 union members present. While it is the democratic right of unions, businesses or individuals to donate to a candidate, Barr said as a journalist she would not personally support donations from unions that include journalists among their members. That a small donation was made years ago does not have any effect on
the integrity of the newsroom, she said. “I don’t believe the Advocate journalists have been influenced in any way or prevented from doing a fair and honest job.” Advocate publisher Fred Gorman does not believe union locals should financially help candidates in their communities. He said he believes strongly that the newspaper’s integrity remains intact. “We are committed to a fair and balanced reporting on all issues, whether they be political or otherwise.” The Red Deer Advocate does not make political donations to candidates. pcowley@reddeeradvocate.com
