On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Canadian Parents for French volunteers led “Buddy Day” at Parkland Middle School.

Buddy Day has become an annual event (for the past two years), whereby the TM Robert’s Grade 6 French immersion (FI) students go to Parkland and “buddy up” with the Grade 7 French Immersion students for onehour of outdoor “carnival” type fun.

This is to help ease the transition from elementary to middle school and thereby increase the likelihood of students staying in French immersion.

Bonhomme (the mascot for “Carnival”) also attends the event and receives a warm welcome from students.

Buddy Day ends with hot chocolate and cookies, provided at a generously reduced cost by Max’s Place.

Most years, the route is largely free of snow and ice. However, the Start/ Finish area is known for its cool breezes.

On March 2, the 3rd annual “March Forth” foot race duplicates “Run Your Heart Out.” Run twice and attempt to better your time!

New food guide hopes to list all food producers in the East Kootenay food, the guide helps increase the viability of producing local food and in the long term hopes to encourage more producers to start up,” said Shannon Duncan.

The The Cranbrook Food Action Committee, Creston Valley Food Action Coalition, Groundswell Network, and Slow Food Columbia Valley have collaborated on this joint venture since its inception.

The area covered by the guide is expanding this year north to Golden.

The District of Invermere is sponsoring this project as part of their Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP), called Imagine Invermere 2030 (II 2030).

East Kootenay food producers are being asked to put their hands up to appear in a local food guide that will be printed in spring 2014.

The 4th edition of the East Kootenay Local Food Guide will contain a lit of local food producers between Creston and Golden and Fernie.

A collaboration of East Kootenay food action groups put out the guide, hoping it will make it easier for people to find a wide variety of locally produced food.

The most recent version of the food guide, from 2011, can be found at www.cranbrookfoodaction.com.

The new guide will be printed and available at local Farmers’ Markets.

Food producers won’t be charged to appear in the guide, as it’s a non-profit initiative.

In preparation for the 2014 General Local Election and the modernization of voting systems, the city passed the first three readings of a bylaw that deals with automated voting machines on Feb. 3.

At the regular council meeting, Coun. Gerry Warner noted there are some

great features to the automated voting machines.

“One of the features of voting machines apparently, is if you start to spoil your ballot by mistake it tells you that,” Warner said. “And gives you another chance.”

Director of Corporate Services Roy Hales said in 2011, four per cent of the ballots were rejected at the time of counting.

“That amounted to 718 ballots,” Hales said. “So with this method we will hopefully reduce that down to zero.”

According to the report put together by city staff, automated voting machines have been used in B.C. for a number of years. The machines are currently used by over 70 municipalities, including Nelson, Trail and Castlegar. Some of those mu-

nicipalities were contacted by city staff and their reviews were positive.

Scott said the budgetary impact is minimal. City staff noted in the report that the machine were estimated to cost between $12,000 and $14,000.

“The cost of the machines basically offsets the cost that we had to pay people to stay and count the ballots,” Scott

said. “It will also be done faster and it’s supposed to be more accurate. Other cities have done it and it seems to work well, I think it behooves us to look into it.”

City staff said in the report that costs would be recovered through the reduction of election worker hours through elimination of the manual count, and through cost sharing opportunities

with other East Kootenay municipalities if they decide on the same service provider.

Mayor Wayne Stetski and Coun. Denise Pallesen were absent from the meeting.

The Local Government Act states that a bylaw such as the one before council has to be adopted before a municipality can begin using automated voting machines during an election.

Cougar hunting season closes in East Kootenay Submit ted

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is closing the cougar hunting season in the East Kootenay, effective midnight on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014.

The closure covers the Columbia River valley from Mica Creek in the north, east to the Alberta border and south to the U.S. border. The following Wildlife Management Units are affected: 4-01 to 4-04, 4-21 to 4-26, 4-34 to 4-37 and 4-40.

The closure is guided by the regional cougar management program to reduce the potential

for overharvesting of the cougar population in the area. The closure is a routine action detailed on page 50 of the 201214 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis and is undertaken to ensure harvest levels remain sustainable.

WOLF CREEK LINE RELOCATION PROJECT COMMENCEMENT BC Hydro will be making system improvements and re-locating the power line in the Wasa—Wolf Creek area to improve reliability for customers along Wolf Creek Road.

Work will begin February 2014 and is expected to be completed by June 2014. The project will include vegetation clearing work, followed by construction activities and the use of heavy equipment, which could result in higher than normal traffic activity in the area.

BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience that the construction activity may cause, and will complete the work safely and as efficiently as possible.

Building on the popularity of past Teas in The Gallery, a Valentine Tea will be held this coming Saturday, Feb. 15 from 11:30 to 1:30 pm at 135, Tenth Avenue South.

Cranbrook and District Arts Council is proud to be showing the Flathead Wild Exhibit at this time and from the enthusiastic responses to the artwork on show, this beautiful scenery interpreted and painted by area artists will provide the perfect backdrop for a dainty sandwich and a sweet treat all for the sum of $5.

Tickets are available at the door but there is limited seating.

Three of ‘Flathead Wild’ artists, Simon Haiduk from Kimberley, Laura Nelson from Fernie and Joseph Cross from Cranbrook were in attendance at the Friday, Feb. 7, reception.

Visitors were able to ask the artists more about their experience camping, hiking, sketching and painting ‘en plein air’ in this beautiful part of the province. A common theme of vastness and beauty of the area emerged as the artists talked about how it was

Prescription pot pretense ending

O

n April 1, medical marijuana growing licences expire across the country, and only licensed commercial growers will be able to legally fill a prescription for pot.

Ottawa is moving to clean up the mess it created by issuing medical licences all over the country. Since then, municipalities have complained that small-scale medical licences have been greatly exceeded, with many used as fronts for a criminal drug trade that has made B.C. infamous around the world.

How big is the problem? There are about 38,000 Canadians licensed to carry marijuana for medical purposes, and half of them live in B.C. Their permission to grow their own or buy it from designated small-scale growers is withdrawn in a couple of months.

Here’s a look at the community level.

Police in the Fraser Valley suburb of Maple Ridge estimate that it alone has 500 properties licensed to grow pot. No, Maple Ridge is not a world hotspot for glaucoma or arthritis. It is historically known for its secluded properties and as a base for B.C.’s prison system and the province’s Hells Angels.

Police have only an estimate because Ottawa’s bungled medical pot scheme conceals the location of licensed grow-

ers from provincial and local governments.

RCMP Insp. Dave Fleugel told Maple Ridge council last week that his detachment will first target medical growers they know are linked to organized crime. But it’s difficult to determine which are legal and which are not.

“This has the potential to BC VIEWS cripple the courts,” Fleugel Tom said. “Something is going to Fletcher have to take a back seat if we are going to go after all of them.”

The police and fire department have proposed an amnesty or grace period, allowing people to disclose their location and have it properly dismantled without penalty, to help deal with the volume.

This mess was created by Ottawa in response to a court ruling that forced them to make medical pot available. The Harper government remains trapped in a failed war-on-drugs mentality that prevents any innovation or even common sense.

Then there is the circus in Vancouver, where self-styled princes of pot exploit the confusion of the medical marijuana law to run an Amsterdam-style retail trade.

varieties.

“By Health Canada’s own estimate, the cost will increase from $5 per gram to $8.80 per gram — going up by nearly 400 per cent,” its website warns. Apparently smoking lots of weed really is bad for your math skills.

Dana Larsen, who spearheaded the ill-conceived and failed decriminalization petition last year, heads up the serious-looking “Medical Cannabis Dispensary.” It has done so well at its location in the drug bazaar of East Hastings Street that it’s got a branch office on Vancouver’s west side.

Its official-looking forms have a long list of conditions where only a confirmation of diagnosis is required. In addition to genuine conditions such as side effects of chemotherapy, it includes anxiety, psoriasis, spinal cord injury and even “substance addictions/withdrawal.”

And did you know you can get a vet’s note to buy medical pot for your pet?

Larsen has boasted about the exotic offerings of his stores, including “watermelon hash oil” at $150 for 2.5 grams. Wow man, that’s like 400 million per cent higher!

Fittingly, this farce goes back underground on April Fool’s Day. Medical users can only order shipments from an approved commercial producer.

Marysville Arena

I must have driven right by La La land and any City Councillors that think we can afford two arenas for hockey. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are some adults who still fantasize about a career in hockey but claim they are only worried about the kids. Well, that’s a joke.

When hockey was at its strongest in Kimberley and when the population was at its highest, the Marysville rink did not exist. This didn’t stop a single person from playing. With great scheduling, the Civic Centre was able to handle all of the hockey aspirants, young and old. Even with a strong City League, we all managed to play.

No one has chosen to do anything to raise money to keep Marysville Arena open. It seems that year after year organizations keep going open handed to the City when the City does not have the funds to meet all of these requests. The City is not meeting many important infrastructure challenges, the least of which is a second arena. The flume is not completed and the only street sweeper was out of commission for long periods of time in the spring as it also needs to be replaced.

Councillors, take a stand. At this time, we don’t have the money for an Ice Plant!

Open letter to BC Minister of Education

Minister Fassbender: I took the time to read your email. I hope you will treat me with the same respect and take the time to read my response.

Firstly, I don’t appreciate you sending me your party’s propaganda and calling it “information.” Neither I, nor my colleagues need you to tell us about the dire

situation education faces in our province.

We don’t need to read your rhetoric about the government’s plans to improve the educational system. We have seen how little the Liberal government values public education, along with other public services in BC, through your ongoing cuts to funding in attempts to privatize these services. Rather than “informing” me of the situation, your time and energy would be much better spent reflecting on the illegal acts your government has committed; finding ways to compensate students, like my son, whose Kindergarten to Grade 12 education was inadequately funded; and ensuring that current and future students receive the necessary support from teachers by reinstating the pre-2002 class size and composition limits and non-enrolling teacher ratios.

Secondly, you seem to think that “the BCTF” and teachers are two separate entities. We are one and the same. I am a proud member of the BCTF and am fortunate to be served by a dedicated and democratically elected executive. I don’t do what “the BCTF” tells me to do.

Through democratic processes, I help to elect an executive who has consistently fulfilled its mandate to represent teachers and advocate for quality public education. As a member, I have many opportunities to contribute to the direction taken by my union. Your Liberal government would do well to follow such a fine example of democracy. I encourage you to be the first to do so, by telling Premier Clark that you cannot ethically continue carrying out her policies of attacking your province’s education system and the children it serves.

Thirdly, I am amazed by your government’s determination to hold its ground at all costs. You have been told twice in the courts that you have broken the law.

Instead of accepting these legal decisions, you are wasting time and money in your attempts to avoid complying. In the meantime, our children are suffering. If the courts were telling you to do some-

thing unethical, I would applaud you for your commitment, but this is far from the case. You are instead stubbornly resisting doing the decent and honourable thing: protecting our students’ access to quality education through reinstating class size and composition limits. Your refusal to comply with the court decisions communicates to the public that you care more about saving face than meeting the basic needs of the children of BC. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Not above the law

As a serial violator of workers’ charter-protected rights, the B.C. government is solely responsible for its failure to convince courts that it should be able to run roughshod over collective bargaining rights.

As Tom Fletcher points out (End this bloody B.C. school war, February 4, 2014), this constitutionally-protected right to collective bargaining was established by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2007 in response to contract-shredding legislation imposed without consultation on health care workers five years earlier.

But I have to take issue with Fletcher’s suggestion that this charter right was “invented” by the court. It was no more an invention than marriage equality rights for same sex couples, consultation rights for aboriginal peoples, or accommodation rights for people with disabilities.

It’s time for our provincial government to accept that they are not above the law when it comes to the collective bargaining rights of teachers, health care workers or anyone else.

Experts battle growing online crime Tom Fletcher Black Press

Online privacy and security experts gathered in Victoria on the weekend to share strategies to protect computer networks they say are “under attack like never before.”

Charles Wordsworth, technology security consultant and vice president of Privacy and Access Council of Canada, said the days of teenage computer hackers making mischief have been replaced by organized crime, much of it based in Eastern Europe.

A key concern is breaking into computer networks that collect personal information.

The attraction is simple, Wordsworth said. Online criminals work in secret, with little risk to them as they search for weaknesses.

“You don’t get shot robbing online banks,” Wordsworth said. “Unfortunately from my experience, the hackers are getting smarter, they have more money than anybody else, so

Lukowich parts ways with Lethbridge TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Brad Lukowich, the assistant coach with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, was fired from the team on Friday, after half a season on the bench.

In a terse three-sentence press release, ‘Canes general manager Brad Robson said Lukowich had been “terminated for cause.”

Following his retirement after an long career in professional, the two-time Stanley Cup champion and Cranbrook native joined Lethbridge for his first coaching job.

The Hurricanes are

having a tough season this year, tied with the Kamloops Blazers for a CHL-worst total of 27 points with a record of 11-41-2-3. Due to those struggles, the team also had to deal with a couple that players either requested trades or simply left the organization.

Head coach Drake Berehowsky is in his first year with the team, after taking over from former bench boss/GM Rich Preston, who was with the team for four years, failing to make the playoffs in every season during his tenure.

The Kootenay Ice downgraded the Hurricanes twice this weekend, thumping their opponents 8-1 in Lethbridge on Friday and winning 4-2 in Cranbrook on Saturday.

Those two victories against their divisional rivals put the Ice into fifth place in the Eastern Conference, as the WHL begins to head into the final stretch of the season.

“Every point counts from here on in, these four points—we’re in fifth right now, try to get up to fourth, maybe even third, so that’s our goal,” said Ice defenceman Jagger Dirk. “Every game, just win each period, so we get the two points at the end of the night so we can move up in the standings.”

After the lopsided defeat in Lethbridge, the Hurricanes kept it even on Saturday after the first period before the Kootenay Ice opened up a lead on their way to the win.

Ice captain Sam Reinhart had a goal and two assists, while Jagger Dirk, Rinat Valiev and Luke Philp also provided scoring, while Reid Duke and Riley Sheen responded for the Hurricanes.

Ice goaltender Mackenzie Skapski made 32 saves for the win, while Teagan Sacher stopped 30 shots for Lethbridge.

Valiev opened the scoring, trailing the play and finishing on a tictac-toe play from Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau, but Duke answered back late in the frame on a powerplay goal with a shot from the point.

Kootenay built up their lead in the second period, first with Dirk stuffing home a wraparound followed by Reinhart sniping a powerplay goal.

Frustrations came to a boiling point late in the frame, with Jon Martin and Macoy Erkamps dropping the

mitts, a preview of what was to come in the third period.

After Luke Philp made it a three-goal lead for a 4-1 score, things got ugly when a couple fights broke out following a save by Skapski in Kootenay territory.

Five Ice players headed to the penalty box and the Canes were given a four-minute powerplay.

Riley Sheen managed to rip a shot past Skapski on the ensuing man-advantage, then subsequently took an unsportsmanlike penalty during his goal celebration after skating by the Ice sin bin.

It was relatively smooth sailing the rest

of the game, despite more fisticuffs between Tim Bozon and Jamal Watson, and surviving a six-on-four Canes powerplay in the final minute of the game.

“Our team did a good job of responding to their physicality and their so-called toughness,” said Dirk. “...A lot of stuff went down but we stuck up for each other, stuck up for ourselves and going back into the room after the game was a pretty good feeling.”

The Ice were merciless the night before in Lethbridge, building a 5-1 lead after the first period on the road to an 8-1 win.

Bozon led the way with a hat trick and an

assist, while Reinhart also notched a goal and two helpers. Scoring was also provided on a pair from Philp, while Descheneau and Zach Franko also found the back of the net.

In the opening 20 minutes, Philp tallied a pair, while Descheneau, Reinhart and Bozon also lit the goal lamp for a massive lead. The lone response from the Canes came from Sheen in the latter half of the frame.

Bozon scored within the first two minutes of the second period, and completed his hat trick in the third, with Franko scoring in the final five minutes of the game.

Skapski again picked up the win with 23 saves.

Like Saturday, It was also a penalty-laden affair, with five fights, including a late-game set of fisticuffs as tempers flared.

Kootenay hits the road this week for games against Moose Jaw, Regina and a pair in Brandon.

NOTES: Sam Reinhart extended his point streak to 13 games over the weekend, with 11 goals and 19 assists over that span. He has been recognized as the WHL Player of the Week, which was announced on Monday. Ryan Chynoweth (upper-body) and Kyle O’Connor (lower body) were scratched in both games.

The Kimberley Dynamiters stayed hot this weekend with a pair of wins over the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and the Spokane Braves at scores of 3-2.

The Nitros have one four of their last five games, and haven’t lost during that stretch, which includes a 4-4 draw with the T-Cats last week.

After scoring the first goal, the Dynamiters engineered a comeback in the third period to beat Creston 3-2 on Friday while on the road.

Dylan Sibbald opened the

scoring late in the frame, before the T-Cats responded from Connor Kidd and Jesse Collins in the second period.

Jason Richter tied it up just under five minutes into the final frame, and Alex Rosolowsky scored the game-winner with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game.

Creston led the way on the shot clock, but Tyson Brouwer picked up the win for Kimberley with 33 saves, while Kyle Michalovsky turned away 27 shots in defeat.

It was a relatively tame affair with the special teams bat-

tle, as Kimberley was denied on three powerplay chances, while Creston was shut out in a pair of opportunities with the man-advantage.

The Dynamiters returned home on Saturday night and beat the Braves with a pair of goals in the third period.

After a scoreless opening frame, Brady Revie drew blood just before the halfway mark of the period. Four minutes later, Tanner Stolz answered back with a powerplay goal for Spokane.

Dallin Wolf put the Nitros up just into the third period, and Richter notched some in-

surance on the powerplay at 11:11.

A few minutes later, Paxton Malone responded for Spokane, but Kimberley shut down any attempt at a comeback after that.

Brouwer got starting duties again, and picked up the win with 33 saves while Jon Manlow turned away 20 shots in defeat.

Kimberley is currently in second place in the Eddie Mountain Division, and have two more games left in the regular season—both home affairs with the Fernie Ghostriders.

Huge day from athletes moves Canada atop Sochi standings C anadian Press

SOCHI, Russia - Alex Bilodeau and Charles Hamelin took their customary spots on top of the podium as Canada surged into first place in the medal standings at the Sochi Olympics.

Bilodeau became the first freestyle skier to defend a moguls gold medal with his blistering run in the men’s final.

The native of Rosemere, Que., who won Canada’s first gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games, is only the second Canadian to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the same Winter Olympic event. Speedskater Catroina Le May Doan won back-to-back 500metre long track races in Nagano (1998) and Salt lake City (2002).

Mikael Kingsbury, Bilodeau’s teammate and main rival, took silver. Kingsbury went last in the final and had a chance to unseat the Olympic champion, but the native of Deux-Montagnes, Que., came up short.

“It’s a great feeling, but I need to first of all thank all my colleagues,” Bilodeau said. “I was the third to go, there were

two other Canadians after me, every day they push me in training and that’s why I got my best skiing tonight. That’s why I’m the best skier I have ever been right now and the guy that finished second, he is going to win everything after I have gone.”

The star skier’s perfect run is also the perfect end to his Olympic career.

“I’m glad to finish my last Olympics like this,” Bilodeau said. “It’s going to be a great retirement. The future of freestyle skiing in Canada is not done, there is so many good kids coming up and I am so glad to share a podium with one of them.”

Earlier, short-track speedskating star Hamelin of Ste-Julie, Que., won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500 metres with a focused and confident race. While not a repeat champion - not yet, anyway - Hamelin is no stranger to the top of the podium. He won two gold medals in Vancouver, in the men’s 500 and as part of the relay team.

The Netherlands, which has been dominating the long-track speedskating events, also has three gold medals and seven overall.

But Canada is ahead with one more silver than the Dutch.

Norway also has seven medals, but one less gold than Canada and the Dutch.

Bilodeau and Kingsbury delivered Canada’s second one-two-punch

as the team dominated the slushy, difficult moguls course at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.

Montreal sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe finished first and second in the women’s moguls two days ago.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the World Cup stars. Bilodeau nearly fell in the first elimination run and flirted with getting bounced with an eightplace finish, while Kingsbury didn’t look dominant until the second elimination run,

where he finished on top.

Bilodeau’s experience showed in the final, where he put down easily his best run of the Games. Kingsbury, who may have peaked in the second elimination run, couldn’t catch him.

“It’s crazy,” Kingsbury said. “I was going for gold, but just to be on the podium is crazy and I am with my teammate. It’s just unbelievable.”

Marc-Antoine Gagnon of Terrebonne, Que., almost made it a

Canadian sweep, but he finished fourth.

Hamelin took a step towards becoming the country’s most decorated winter Olympian of all time with his win in the men’s 1,500 shorttrack event. That gives him four Olympic medals overall, including three gold. Long-track speedskater Cindy Klassen has six career medals, but Hamelin still has three races left in Sochi.

“Of course I want to be on the podium again,” Hamelin said.

“But this is short-track and it’s a tough sport.”

Hamelin will have two more chances to win individual gold in the 500 and 1,000, and he’ll be part of Canada’s team in the 5,000 relay.

He won the 500 and was part of the gold-winning relay team four years ago in Vancouver.

Hamelin is expected to compete for gold in those events in Sochi.

Winning the 1,500 is an extra bonus, as Hamelin was seventh in the event in Vancouver.

“It’s not my best distance,” said Hamelin.

“But I had a really good start and was able to control the race afterwards. I am looking forward to continue (rac-

ing) that strong this week.”

Canada’s men’s hockey team finally arrived in Sochi and had their first practice on Monday, with Jeff Carter right wing alongside captain Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz on the top line.

Team Canada opens its title defence with a game against Norway on Thursday.

The women’s hockey team were held scoreless by Finland for almost 50 minutes, but Jayna Hefford, Rebecca Johnston and Megan Agosta-Marciano scored late in the third to give the Canadians a 3-0 win.

Next up for Canada is a date with the rival Americans on Wednesday. Both teams are 2-0.

Canada’s curlers also started their medal quests today, with Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones beating China 9-2.

Brad Jacobs had a tougher time, with his rink from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., beating Germany 11-8 before losing 5-4 to Switzerland.

SOCHI, Russia - Two skiing sisters and a snowboard star fighting a broken rib gave Canada’s Olympians the strong start they desired in Sochi.

Canada earned a medal of every colour Saturday on the opening day of Olympic

medal competition.

Montreal’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe led the way, flying to gold in the women’s moguls.

Chloe Du four-Lapointe wasn’t far behind her sister, taking silver and relegating defending champion Hannah Kearney of the United States to

bronze.

“It feels amazing,” Chloe said of being on the podium with her sister. “It happened at the World Cup, but now it’s at the Olympics. We had to do three runs and we did it together.

We’re just really happy.”

While she looked tentative in the early runs, she blazed down the course when it counted. The combination of her speed, handling of the moguls and jumps - a 360-degree twist and a back layout - gave her a score of 22.44 points.

Homan rink goes unbeaten to win second straight Scotties C anadian Press

MONTREAL - Rachel Homan never got to throw a final stone in a 10th end.

Such was the dominance of Homan’s Canada team, which went undefeated to claim a second straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts with an 8-6 victory over Alberta’s Val Sweeting on Sunday night.

“We ran the table,” said Homan. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my teammates.

To be repeat champions is something we’re crazy-proud of.”

The Ottawa team of Homan, lead Lisa Weagle, second Alison Kreviazuk and third Emma Miskew, defended the Canadian wom-

en’s curling championship they won last year in Kingston, Ont. At 13-0, they are the first since Linda Moore’s rink in 1985 to go undefeated.

They were barely threatened along the way, including in the final, when they scored three in the second end and never looked back.

HALIFAX - The mayor of Halifax says the city should have its own mixed-use stadium and he likes the idea of having a CFL team as an anchor tenant, but Mike Savage says discussions with the league and potential private partners are just starting.

Savage, who met with CFL commissioner Mark Cohon today, declined to discuss timelines or the degree of

corporate interest.

Cohon says establishing a CFL team in Halifax is part of the league’s long-term plan, but he, too, declined to name any of the national or local business leaders that he and the mayor are talking to.

The commissioner pointed to the new CFL franchise in Ottawa as a potential model for Halifax, but he stressed that the discussions that led to that team’s rebirth took seven years to

No one was expecting a big announcement today, considering Cohon had said last week the Halifax meetings were just exploratory.

Still, Cohon suggested that Halifax is a logical location for a future franchise, saying that even though there has been significant interest expressed in Moncton, that market is probably too small to support a team.

stronger second half, but you can’t get down early on them because they’re such a good team,” said Sweeting.

“We were setting up a couple of good ends after that but then we’d have a miss. What can you do?”

After Homan posted three points in the second end, Sweeting answered with a hit for two in the third.

Sweeting was a tad strong on a raise in the fourth and Homan came around the right side to hit for two. Alberta got one back in the fifth.

Canada was in trouble in the sixth when a Sweeting draw left Alberta with three stones near the button, but Homan scattered them with a hit to salvage one point.

Sweeting drew for two in the seventh to close the gap to one point, only to see Homan pick off two Sweeting draws to score two in the eighth.

A Sweeting bid for a double takeout fell

short and the Alberta skip was forced to draw for one in the ninth, handing Homan the hammer and a twopoint lead going into the final end.

Canada ran them out of rocks to clinch the victory.

“It wasn’t easy - they made us work for everything,” said Homan.

“Credit to Val’s team.

We needed our absolute A game to beat them.”

Carey won the bronze medal game 7-3 over Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton.

It offered some consolation for not reaching the final.

“The disappointment doesn’t go away, but you want to at least salvage what you can out of it,” said Carey. “I don’t agree with this even being a game. I never have.

“The Page (playoff) system builds in a bronze medallist. But, as much as I disagree with the game, it’s nice to win a game to get there.”

Carey made two per-

fect draws to score two in the eighth end for a 4-3 lead.

Lawton blanked the ninth and had the hammer going into the final end, but then disaster struck.

Second Sherri Singler threw a flash, third Sherry Anderson hit a guard and soon there were five Manitoba stones ringing the button.

Lawton tried to sneak in an angled raise with her last shot, but it couldn’t get through and Carey got a steal of three.

The winning team splits $25,500 and gets gold rings with a diamond, while the silver medallists get $15,500 plus a gold ring with a ruby.

Carey’s squad gets $12,000 and a gold ring with an emerald. Because of her repeat win, the Homan team’s diamonds will be twice the size of last year. Lawton’s side gets $7,000.

All 12 teams get $4,167 for wearing title sponsor crests.

The magnificent, quixotic John Kerry John Kerry has been US Secretary of State for precisely one year, and he has already 1) rescued President Obama from his ill-considered promse to bomb Syria if it crossed the “red line” and used poison gas; 2) opened serious negotiations with Iran on its alleged attempt to build nuclear weapons; and 3) taken on the job of brokering an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord.

Getting Obama off the hook was useful, and may yet lead to the US ending its support for the insurgency in Syria, which at this point would probably be the least bad outcome. Opening negotiations with Iran was long overdue, and makes the nightmare prospect of an American or a joint US-Israeli air attack on Iran daily less likely.

But even King Solomon and Avicenna (Ibn Sina), sitting jointly in judgement on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, could not broker a peace accord there.

Kerry is indefatigable. He has been to Israel/Palestine eleven times in the past year, and spent as much as a hundred hours face to face with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Palestinian

leader Mahmoud Abbas or their close advisers. Unlike all the previous “brokers”, he has been astoundingly discreet: not a hint of what has been said in private has leaked into the public domain. And yet there is almost no hope of a real peace deal.

If persistence in the face of all the odds were enough, Kerry would be the man who finally made it happen. (Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon recently complained that his approach is “obsessive and messianic.”) But Kerry has no leverage: he has to rely on the desire of the two leaders to make the “peace process” work, and it just isn’t there; not, at least, on any terms that both would find acceptable.

The list of deal-breakers includes almost every topic under discussion: the borders of a Palestinian state, the future of the Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, whether Jerusalem can be the joint capital of Israel and Palestine,

whether Israel can maintain a military presence in the Jordan Valley, the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes, and Israel’s demand that the Palestinians recognise it as an explicitly Jewish state.

This last demand, which was only raised in the past couple of years, seems deliberately designed to be unacceptable to the Palestinians.

Not only are they required to acknowledge the leGwynne gitimacy of the Israeli state (which Dyer they have already done), but also to give their blessing to the ethnic and religious character of that state.

It is not normal in diplomacy for one state to comment upon the internal arrangements of another, let alone to give them its public support. Even the United States, Israel’s closest ally and supporter, does not officially recognise it as a “Jewish state.” The Israeli demand is an attempt to rub the Palestinians’ noses in their defeat, and why would you set out to do that if you really want-

ed a deal?

The Palestinian insistence on a “right of return,” however rooted in natural justice, is equally self-defeating in practice. Everybody knows that a peace deal must mean compensation for the refugees of 1948 and their descendants, not a general right of return to what is now Israel, for that really would mean the end of the “Jewish state.”

But no Palestinian leader has ever dared to say so out loud.

So why, then, has John Kerry embarked on his quixotic mission to make the “peace process” work?

It has been effectively dead for at least a dozen years, although it remains unburied because the pretense that it is still alive allows everybody to avoid hard decisions.

But Kerry, with his nine-month deadline to achieve a comprehensive “final-status agreement” (which expires in April), is taking it seriously.

His own explanation is lyrical but opaque: “I believe that history is not made by cynics. It is made by realists who are not afraid to dream.” But the business about “making history” – that, perhaps, is

sincere. Kerry has had a long and interesting career as a senator, and even took a shot at the presidency, but this is probably his last big job, and he wants to make his mark.

As the reality of what he is up against strikes home, he has scaled back his ambitions a good deal. For some months now he has been talking about a more modest “framework” deal by April that would establish a set of basic principles for further talks. Such deals commit nobody to anything, and are therefore a popular way of pretending to make progress, but he’ll be lucky to get even that.

The French general Pierre Bosquet, watching the suicidal charge of the British Light Brigade in the Crimean War in 1854, said: “It is magnificent, but it is not war. It’s madness.”

Kerry’s foredoomed quest for a final peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians is magnificent too, in its own peculiar way, but it’s not diplomacy. It’s hubris.

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s highly anticipated plans to regulate and tax the liquefied natural gas industry remain a work in progress, but the government is about to offer a peak at its energy blueprint when politicians return to the legislature on Tuesday.

Liberal House Leader Mike de Jong said the government wants to introduce the public to its general goals for LNG in the coming weeks, but the actual policy — in the form of legislation and regulations — won’t be ready until the fall.

Politicians are back in Victoria for Tuesday’s throne speech, which opens the start of a legislative session slated to last at least until the end of May. Christy Clark’s Liberals, the winners of last May’s provincial election, continue to push their economic development agenda, with a heavy focus on LNG and support for major projects including the proposed Site C dam and a bridge to replace

the Massey Tunnel south of Vancouver.

De Jong, who is also finance minister, said the government plans a heavy legislative agenda that includes tabling a balanced budget next week, modernizing the province’s liquor laws and revealing some details of its LNG plans.

“One of the issues that I am working on and making a final decision around is the extent to which we lay out as part of the budgetary process the construct of an LNG tax regime,’’ said de Jong.

“We want the public and proponents to know the general framework for that. The sooner we can lay out for the public what the LNG tax would look like

the better, in my view.’’

But he said revenue estimates from the LNG industry will not be included in the budget, which the government will table next Tuesday.

The budget includes financial projections for the next three years, but since there are currently no operating LNG plants in B.C., the government won’t be putting LNG estimates into its fiscal plan.

Last February, the premier announced a B.C. Prosperity Fund that she said would raise up to $100 billion in LNG revenues over 30 years. She said the fund would be used to pay off the provincial debt, currently at more than $60 billion, and invest in health, educa-

tion and infrastructure.

NDP House Leader John Horgan said it appears the Liberals are losing ground on their plans to get a head start on LNG projects. Clark has stressed the need to get ahead of countries such as Australia, but Horgan said the Liberals are still working on their regulations a year later.

“I remember this being a foot race — we’ve got to get out there and get them done,’’ said Horgan.

“It’s a year later and we have no idea. They are behind the eightball on this.’’

creases in child poverty, and the loss of private-sector jobs.

However, observers will likely be watching for possible leadership contenders to rise from the NDP benches.

New Democrats Mike Farnworth, David Eby and Rob Fleming have so far distinguished themselves as three potential leadership candidates. They have yet to officially rule out bids to replace current leader Adrian Dix in September.

At least seven other potential NDP leadership candidates, includ-

ing Horgan, federal NDP MP Nathan Cullen and Vancouver-area provincial New Democrat George Heyman have dropped out of the race before officially entering.

Farnworth, Eby and Fleming have yet to officially enter the race, but are expected to make announcements.

Meanwhile, Horgan said the New Democrats aren’t convinced about the government’s plans to introduce a morning question period.

De Jong said last week that the Liberals

want to switch question period to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but keep Monday and Wednesday question periods at their original time of 1:30 p.m. The legislature does not sit on Fridays.

Horgan said morning question periods give the Liberals more time to respond to NDP attacks and allow the Liberals to leave Victoria earlier every week.

“Mr. de Jong’s solution to parliamentary reform is to see if we can get out of Victoria faster on a Thursday,’’ said Horgan.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: A few years ago, my wife went out of town for a conference. A month after she returned, I was on our computer and noticed that she hadn’t logged out of her email. My curiosity got the best of me, and I saw that she had traded emails with an old boyfriend. I then discovered that the two of them had met while she was at the conference. One of her last emails to him said, “I still have feelings for you.”

On the advice of a marriage counselor, I was direct with her about it. She claimed nothing happened and that they only met for dinner and said she would never contact him again. She also was angry that I had invaded her privacy.

Last year, my wife and I hit a rough patch.

I got suspicious of her behavior and checked her cellphone. I saw that she had exchanged multiple texts with this same guy. Again, she claims nothing happened, the texts were innocent and I had no right to snoop.

My wife knows the password to my email, and I never lock my cellphone. All of my communication is an open book. Meanwhile, she now locks her phone and has multiple email accounts. I understand the need for a little privacy, but I don’t believe you should be hiding things in a committed relationship. My wife is angry that I don’t trust her, and I’m having trouble dealing with this. Any advice? -- Broken Up Dear Broken: We don’t trust your wife, either. She promised not to contact this man again and then did so and hid it from you. She locks her phone and has multiple email accounts to which you apparently do not have the passwords. Worse, to deflect blame, she accuses you of snooping. There may not have been a sexual affair, but it definitely sounds like an emotional attachment. Please go back to your counselor and ask your wife to come with you. The two of you need a refresher course on how to make your marriage work and regain trust.

Dear Annie: I own a small casual restaurant in a small town. People order at the counter and then take their food to a table to eat.

In the past couple of years, I’ve noticed more people bringing in food from other establishments and eating at our place. I don’t understand why people think it’s OK to take advantage of an eating establishment like this. Don’t they realize that the owner is paying for the incidental items they use, such as napkins? Don’t they see that they are taking up space that could be used by people who are actually helping to pay the bills incurred by the restaurant? Am I looking at the situation in the wrong way? -- No Free Lunch Dear No: We suspect most people have no clue that this is an inconvenience to you.

There are some establishments that allow people to sit for extended lengths of time without ordering, but we know of none that encourage you to bring your own food. Most restaurants require a minimum order to justify the use of the space. We suggest you implement this policy with a sign at each table and at the cash register. You may have to approach flouters with a bill, but word will get around.

Dear Annie: This is for “Tired,” who does all the cooking for the holiday meals and then gets stuck with the cleanup, too. I have a good friend in the same situation. She is on good terms with all of her family members, but they never helped or knew what to do. So she wrote up duties, put them on little pieces of paper and placed the pieces into a nice dish. When each guest arrived, they picked out a paper and read their duty for that meal.

They loved it, and she was not so worn out.
