Gazette staff M O U N T WADDINGTON—North Islanders will install new municipal councils and school district board of trustees Saturday at polling spots across the region. New mayors will take

Woman airlifted following flood J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT HARDY—A local woman and her dog are home safe after being evacuated from the West Coast when heavy rains led to slides that left her stranded at Raft Cove last weekend. “Oh, my,” said Carol Moffatt, 68. “It was quite the little adventure, eh?” Moffatt and a trio of Australian surfers spent the better part of four days from Nov. 6-9 cut off by the series of slides and bridge washouts along logging access roads between Holberg and Raft Cove. A regular visitor to a small, public cabin along the shore in the area, Moffatt left Port Hardy for Raft Cove last Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, planning to stay until Friday afternoon. When she had not returned by Saturday, Moffatt’s friends and family finally called Port Hardy RCMP. Fatal crash on Highway 19

Gazette staff SAYWARD—Alcohol is being investigated as a possible factor behind a two-car collision Monday in which a man was killed and a North Island woman injured. The RCMP reports that the 58-year-old Port McNeill woman was traveling northbound on Hwy. 19 at around 3:30 p.m. See page 3 when her Toyota Corolla appar‘Woman prepared” ently crossed the centre line 15

kilometers south of Sayward Junction and collided with an oncoming Honda Civic. The male driver, the lone occupant of the Civic, was fatally injured in the crash. The woman was transported to Campbell River Hospital with reportedly non-life threatening injuries. Sayward RCMP responded to the incident which closed the highway for more than three

hours Monday afternoon. The file has passed to the BC Coroners Service and North Island Traffic Services for further investigation. “Investigators are examining whether alcohol played a role in this crash,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan. The names of those involved have not been released by the RCMP or the BC Coroners Service.
