NEWS Drivers challenged by winter driving conditions The city’s first heavy snowfall came during the morning commute Monday, wreaking havoc amongst drivers and causing one injury accident.

According to Sgt. Rick LeBeuf of the Williams Lake RCMP, police attended three accidents Monday as a result of road conditions.

The only injury accident occurred at approximately 8:14 a.m. on Highway 20 near the golf course during a time of heavy snowfall and icy roads.

LeBeuf said the driver

of a School District 27 truck headed westbound in the outside lane lost control and crossed two lanes of traffic before being broadsided on the passenger side front by a blue Ford pickup headed east.

The driver of the SD 27 truck was not injured, however, his passenger received minor injuries while the driver of the blue Ford, which had extensive front end damage and a deployed airbag, complained of a sore back and hand injury.

All three were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Traffic was affected for more than one hour as emergency crews rerouted passenger vehicles onto Hodgson Road while dozens of loaded log trucks waited on Highway 20 for the lanes to reopen.

LeBeuf is reminding the public that drivers need to adjust speeds to meet the current road conditions and to have adequate winter tires.

The weather forecast is calling for more snow throughout the week, followed by frigid temperatures for the weekend.

Geothermal pitched as alternative to Site C Tom Fletcher Black Press Geothermal energy can help power the B.C. electrical grid around the province, and B.C. should assess that option before deciding to proceed with a third dam on the Peace River, an industry association says.

The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) issued a report Tuesday detailing its latest work on geothermal sites. In addition to hot springs and volcanic sites that could be tapped to provide power, the study examines “hot sedimentary aquifers” that have been stumbled upon by oil and gas drilling.

“At the risk of offending my own mother, this ain’t your grandma’s geothermal,” said CanGEA chair Alison Thompson at a Victoria news conference.

Energy Minister Bill Bennett said Tuesday he expects to make a final investment decision on BC Hydro’s $8 billion dam proposal by the end of December. federal-provincial review of BC Hydro’s Site C dam project, which noted that little research into geothermal energy has been conducted in B.C. The CanGEA report estimates that deep hot water aquifers and other geothermal sources are capable of producing enough electricity to meet BC Hydro’s pro-

jected needs, including the 1,100 megawatt capacity offered

by Site C. The report calls for a one-year delay on Site C, which has passed federal and provincial environmental reviews and is being considered by the B.C. cabinet.

Energy Minister Bill Bennett said Tuesday he expects cabinet to make a final invest-

ment decision on BC Hydro’s $8 billion dam proposal by the end of December. He said geothermal energy has potential in B.C. because unlike wind or solar power it provides a steady source of power, but he doesn’t see it as an alternative to the dam.

“It is a good resource,” Bennett said.

“We do want to use it.

It will be important to B.C. in the future.

It’s not a way to get the 1,100 megawatts of electricity that we need now.”

Bennett noted that the provincially-funded research agency GeoScienceBC issued a request for proposals Tuesday for a study on the economic viability of geothermal resources.

CanGEA is doing its own mapping, not just of promising sources but their proximity to roads, power lines and consumers.

Thompson said the industry is also looking at combining solar and biomass with geothermally heated water to produce enough heat to fire boilers for electricity.

Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver said the report shows Site C should not go ahead next year, because CanGEA projects lower cost, with power sources and jobs distributed across the province.

Safe ride home Operation Red Nose kicks off in Williams Lake this weekend.

This is the seventh year the Williams Lake Rotary Club has been supporting the program and 31st annual campaign in Canada. With the help of its provincial partner, ICBC, the Operation Red Nose service will be offered Friday and Saturday evenings from Nov. 28 to Dec. 31.

With this year’s theme ‘This season, hand the reins over to us,’ Operation Red Nose is inviting all British Columbians to call and plan a safe ride home.

Operation Red Nose works by deploying teams of three volunteers who will travel the communities’ roads and highways to provide drivers and their vehicles with a ride home.

In addition to making roads safer for everyone during the holiday season, Operation Red Nose volunteers raise funds which directly support youth organizations and amateur sports in

Williams Lake. This year, Cariboo Chilcotin Gymnastics, Williams Lake Skating Club, Cariboo Chilcotin Youth Fiddle Society and Blue Fins will be the recipients.

“The Williams Lake RCMP are very supportive of this worthwhile program,” says Insp. Warren Brown. “This program assists with the RCMP’s vision in getting people safety home.”

Cariboo-Chilcotin receives crisis team Williams Lake will receive a new crisis response team intended to provide targeted support for individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders.

Health Minister Terry Lake made the announcement earlier this

week, which included Assertive Community Treatment teams for Kamloops and Kelowna, as well as the crisis team for the Interior to serve the Cariboo-Chilcotin and 100 Mile House.

Funding for the ACT teams and the crisis response team is provided jointly, with Interior Health contributing $2 million and the Ministry of Health providing $2 million for a total of $4 million.

substance use and emergency department staff to support clients requiring intensive treatment and follow-up.

“We know that many individuals with serious and complex mental health and substance use illnesses use our emergency departments,” said Dave Harrhy, Mental Health and Substance Use Network Director. “One of the goals of these teams is to support clients to the point that they are better managing their symptoms and health in the community and are less likely to need to visit the emergency department.”

Interior Health is in the process of hiring staff for the ACT and crisis response teams, and hopes to see them in place by February with clinical programs starting in the late spring and early summer.

This week’s announcement is partially funded by the $20.25 million earmarked for health authorities to invest in more local programs and supports to improve care for the severely addicted and mentally ill population. This announcement builds on significant progress on the action items outlined in the Ministry of Health’s November 2013 report for individuals with severe addictions and mental illness, with even more programs to be announced in the upcoming year.

NEWS Monitoring buoys installed at breach site Five monitoring buoys were installed this week to continue to monitor Quesnel Lake, the Ministry of Environment said during a public meeting in Williams Lake Monday to update the public on the Mount Polley Mine Breach.

“We’ve been monitoring metal levels of the aluminum, copper, iron levels and suspended solids, which is another representation of the murkiness of the water,” said Hubert Bunce, environment ministry director for Mount Polley.

The buoys were distributed throughout the length of the lake, in the West Arm, and in the area of the sediment plume.

“They will enable us to record the turbidity levels and keep an eye on where the plume is in the winter months when it might not otherwise have been easy to get on the lake, particularly if it starts to ice up,” Bunce said.

Bunce said mitigating the disaster is not going to happen overnight.

“It’s going to be a process of gaining information and reviewing that information to determine what the next best steps are to get to the best possible result.”

A phased approach for the cleanup means the first phase will last until June 2015.

“That will be for the freshet and spring breakup when we will need to protect

against further environmental damage,” Bunce said.

Phase two will span from July 2015 to August 2016 with remediation work, and efforts to restore the environment back to an effective and useful area that will be self-sustaining.

From 2016 into the future, the ministry will continue to monitor and ensure the objectives of phase two are going to be achieved, Bunce said.

Williams Lake resident Sage Birchwater asked if there’s any plan to remove “toxic” tailings from the landscape.

Responding, area district manager for MOE Lori Halls said one of the reasons for the remediation plan being in two phases is because the ministry required the company to focus on protecting the area for spring freshet or spring breakup.

She told Birchwater that sample and geochemistry results will inform the longterm remediation decisions around Hazeltine Creek, Polley Lake and Quesnel Lake.

“There’s still a lot more information that needs to come into play before we can make those final decisions,” Halls said.

“What we’ve come to understand is that we have some subsurface weak material under there and we know what it’s going to take to buttress the dam.”

Mount Polley will build a stronger dam, with a higher factor of safety, than Canadian guidelines call for, he added.

Pickford asked if inspection capacity will change, to which Halls said the three investigations into the mine spill will help determine that.

“Very much,” Halls said. “One of the things were looking at is not just the actions of the company but the actions of government as well.

hat a difference a word makes.

A newsperson was taken to task last week for using the word “protesters” when referring to the people who are making a fuss over the Kinder Morgan pipeline tests on Burnaby Mountain.

He was told the people were “protecting” not protesting. *** Females didn’t fare well in local elections last week. Women on city council are down by half, and only three of the 12 rural regional district directors are women. I’m not really a feminist, but with a couple of exceptions, most of our council members and directors are French middle-aged or Connection older men. Bless Diana French their hearts, but a bit more diversity would have been nice. *** One issue that didn’t get much attention during the campaigning was housing. If we are comfortably housed, I guess we don’t think about it. The outgoing council did issue an expression of interest looking for a nonprofit group to partner in redeveloping Cariboo Lodge to help address the city’s need for affordable housing. About time, but it won’t be easy. The lodge building, like some other older buildings in the city, has an asbestos problem which will be very expensive to deal with. But, whatever the problems, the place can’t sit there deteriorating forever. I wonder if anyone knows if there is a relationship between lack of affordable housing and crime. *** Environment Minister Mary Polak and our MLA Donna Barnett attended Monday night’s open house to hear what is happening at the Mount Polley mine since the tailing pond breach. The Ministry of Environment and the Mount Polley Mining Corporation gave presentations. Representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Interior Health, and the Cariboo Regional District were available to answer questions. Local politicians were there, too. Who wasn’t there were very many Williams Lakers. This has me baffled. If mines are such a big deal for our city, why aren’t more people interested in what is going on with this one?

A good man gone In an age of bad actors, there are still sports figures who have a positive effect on lives outside their chosen game.

The country lost one of those people on the weekend. Pat Quinn died in Vancouver on Sunday night. He was 71. Quinn came from humble beginnings. He grew up in the rough and tumble east end of Hamilton, where he had a paper route for some time, delivering The Globe and Mail. Eventually, the rink near his boyhood home was renamed Pat Quinn Arena. A tough customer in a time when everyone had to be a tough customer in the NHL, Quinn’s most famous playing moment may have been a thunderous check in the 1969 playoffs that provoked a benchclearing brawl between Quinn’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins. The target of Quinn’s hit, the player he knocked unconscious? Bobby Orr. After success as a coach in Philadelphia, Quinn made his way to Los Angeles and then Vancouver, in 1986. He has worked elsewhere since that time, but always kept his Vancouver home. After bringing in players like Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure and Kirk McLean, the Quinn-led Canucks gave the province a thrill by getting to within one win of the Stanley Cup in 1994.

He also led the Canadian Olympic team to its first gold medal in 50 years in Salt Lake City in 2002. As we see sometimes in sports, the biggest, toughest of them all can be the most gentle, giving people off the playing field or ice. As the tributes poured in the last couple of days, we hear more about his selfless work for Canuck Place, a children’s hospice.

Quinn leaves many legacies across the country. He insisted the people he brought on board to work with him — players and coaches — be good citizens in the community. He also never stood in the way of someone who could advance their careers elsewhere.

Current Canucks president Linden is one of those legacies and may be the only Canucks figure more loved and respected in this province than Quinn.

As a sports executive ages, pundits like to look at his tree, the branches that have sprouted careers for others throughout the league. Quinn’s tree has many branches, but in the end it won’t be the hockey results that trace back to the roots of his tree. It will be the community-minded, selfless attitude he instilled in others that will enrich the lives of many for years to come.

would like to begin this Mount Polley mine breach update by recognizing the contributions of all the ministries involved, the local health authority and regional district as well as each of the constituents impacted by the mine breach. This incident has impacted our families, homes, lifestyle as well as our surrounding environment. I thank each of you for your understanding and patience during this difficult time.

This week, Minister of Environment Mary Polak, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett and myself presented the Mount Polley Mitigation and Remediation Plan to the residents of MLA Likely and WilMusings liams Lake. This two-phase remeCoralee Oakes diation plan sets a clear path towards the recovery process with the focus on human health and environmental safety through the winter and spring, to June 2015.

The Mount Polley Mining Corporation has already initiated many components of phase one, towards achieving three key outcomes, which will ensure: No further unauthorized discharges into Hazeltine Creek; stabilizing the impact zone to mitigate seasonal events; and, the continued monitoring of water quality in Quesnel Lake with the installation of monitoring buoy’s that can operate throughout winter. A letter has been sent to the company, outlining what actions have been completed to our satisfaction, and what actions still need to be taken over the shortterm. This approach will ensure our community has an appropriate strategy to ensure stability for the environment during the spring freshet and ensure cleanup efforts remain on track with long-term monitoring, work plans and mitigation measures to address potential long-term impacts to fish, wildlife and vegetation. Phase two of the long-term plan covers the timeframe from July 2015 to August 2016 and focuses on remediating the impacts of the breach. The company is also expected to finalize and implement a long-term monitoring plan as part of Phase Two. MORE VIEWPOINTS New Prosperity project Question of the week could have come in handy We asked the 2nd Editor: We were distressed to see that the Export Development Corporation, a crown corporation of the federal government, is going to be making a $300 million loan to a state owned copper mine in Chile.

It would be nice if the government took a little more interest in the development of copper

mines in B.C. and especially in the Cariboo.

We could have utilized the New Prosperity Mine project to offset the huge decrease in the annual allowable cut that is coming which may result in the loss of a mill.

Also the current possibly of a permanent shutdown of the Mount Polley mine.

So much for looking after the

working people of the Cariboo.

The young people who want work can still keep moving away, because of a lack of opportunity and we can thank the federal government for its forward thinking.

Many questions to be asked on mine Editor: I, like other residents of Likely, am very sad and disappointed that so many are injured in their livelihoods and future health by Mount Polley Mine’s ongoing breach disaster.

I only wish there was an Erin Brockovitch-type person dedicated enough to change some of the effects of it, and get questions answered.

Have the professionals been listened to before the breach?

Did some uneducated people decide to go by the philosophy “loads before roads” for mine production?

Is there documented proof that the professionals were well aware of the dam’s breaches and lack of free board?

Is there an implied gag order for mine workers?

Will this mess with their health and senses?

Were tested fish in Polley Lake showing an adhesion of their livers to their intestines instead of being healthy and fit?

What can they tell us about the affects on humans, birds and animals who consume these fish?

Has it been explained why all the highly-expensive cosmetics being done by hard-working crews and contractors is more important than recovering the poisons and metals?

I’ve talked to people I trust who have gone to the schools of experience and common sense.

Almost two years ago some told us what would happen to Hazeltine Creek if safety did not become more important than production.

I trust someone who warns, not who causes.

It was, in my opinion, an “Act

of God” that no human was killed when Hazeltine Creek roared into Quesnel Lake.

It was not, however, an “Act of God” causing this ongoing disaster, but acts of neglect of those who will one day face the God they blame.

I also would like to see the mine operating again because people need honest work.

This disaster, though, needs to be remembered daily and avoided in the future.

It should never have a polite face painted on it when Quesnel Lake has been poisoned.

People were here before mine workers and employees so they are not the only or most important people in Likely.

Food for thought: go to The Fifth Estate website and look up “Silence of the Labs.”

A Step Ahead Voters say yes to Sam Ketcham Pool Renovations borrowing bylaw

The Cariboo Regional District’s Chief Election Officer has now declared the results as official for the Sam Ketcham Pool (SKP) Renovations and Upgrades Referendum. A total of 4,240 central Cariboo residents participated in the SKP Referendum through mail-in ballots, advance polls and general voting day held this past Saturday. Sixty-eight per cent of participating voters voted in favour of the Cariboo Regional District borrowing up to $10 million over 20 years for renovations and upgrades to the Sam Ketcham Pool at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. The remainder of the cost of the approximately $11.3 million project will need to be made up from grants, fundraising and capital reserves.

Part of opening up the dialogue will include quarterly open house meetings to keep people informed and participating in setting direction.

The Bean Counter Bistro is hosting the first of those meetings tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 6 to 7 p.m. The new office administrator will be introduced and there will be discussion with event chair Cindy Chappell about the re-vamped Winter Lights Festival and Santa Claus Parade happening downtown this Saturday, Nov. 29 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Santa Claus Parade will include a new Ice Princess Float and events in Spirit Square and the Limelight Theatre will include music, carolling, storytelling, live theatre, wagon rides, goodies, midday madness shopping and so much more.

I have a November memory that has stuck with me for many years.

My friend’s daughter was chosen in her community to be a Youth Justice Worker and, with about a dozen other young folks from communities all over the province, she was scheduled for a one-week training session on a military base about six hours from her home.

This was such an honour and the program was conducted under the guidance of the federal police force. It was a big deal!

She was about 11 years old and young to be away from home but her mom, my friend, agreed that she would/should be safe in the hands of such a large policing organization and that it would surely be the experience of a lifetime for her. Oh, yes, it was the experience of a lifetime, for sure.

My friend called again after an hour and asked again to speak to her daughter.

The troop leader came on the phone and reported that her daughter was, in fact, gone and they could not locate her.

They had apparently searched her room and the barracks but she was nowhere to be found. Being a youth, they asked about her daughter’s drug use and whether she might run away.

My friend was fit to be tied — her daughter was missing from an Armed Forces base six hours away and, this being un-

usual behaviour for her daughter, she felt completely helpless.

Local and regional reinforcements were brought into the search, including helicopters.

My friend was called several times over the next hour and offered support by every top brass member of the local, regional and provincial police forces.

This was unprecedented as well as frightening but also truly embarrassing for the training organization, especially in view of the security in their jobs.

What could they mean saying she had just disappeared?

How could that possibly happen in such a facility with such implied security standards? My friend was on the phone constantly and reassured repeatedly that her daughter would be located. It was a very tense time.

On hour four, a call came to say she had been found. The caller was oddly hesitant and stumbled over his words as he

gave her the news that her daughter was OK and, then, tried to explain, without sounding completely foolish, what had happened to activate the huge search of the evening.

It was simple, actually — her daughter, tired after her day in training, had gone off into one of the bedrooms (not her own because her roommates were gabbing and keeping her awake) and fallen asleep.

She had slept through all of the searching, calling out, the whirling helicopter lights of the ground search around the barracks, the dogs barking outside and, of course, all the frantic phone calls. She had slept through it all and four hours later walked sleepily out of the room and into complete chaos!

How do you spell “relief ?”

Oh, and maybe spell “oops” while you’re at it.

Santa Parade welcomes Winter Lights Festival Horse drawn wagon rides are a highlight of the annual Santa Parade and Winter Lights Festival this weekend but unfortunately a deep freeze expected on the weekend might keep the horses at home, says event organizer Cindy Chappell.

The temperatures are predicted to dip to -23C Saturday and possibly even colder.

If that happens, Chappell says Santa won’t be arriving in a horse-drawn wagon as usual, but in alternate transportation.

And for the comfort of visitors activities after the parade will all be held at the Limelight Theatre.

Some of the events such as pictures with Santa, live music, face painting and hot chocolate are scheduled to be held in Spirit Square between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Pictures with Santa are scheduled from noon to 2 p.m.

But if the temperature dips to -20C these events will be moved to the Limelight Theatre across the street where activities are scheduled to run from noon to 7 p.m. in the

Local artists and crafters will be volunteering time and materials for people to make interesting holiday crafts such as bird houses, popcorn garlands, gift cards, wreaths, beaded jewellery, and more using donated recovered and recycled materials.

The event is spearheaded by the Conservation Society and Williams Lake Field

Naturalists in partnership with the Community Arts Council of Williams Lake and the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

he was about 18 years of age.

“I wanted a career that had opportunity to move and explore different parts of Canada and I wanted to be able to give back to the community,” he said.

Anticipating that work will be busy at the Williams Lake detachment, Waters said he has heard it is a great place for somebody to gain experience in various types of policing.

And as is routine for new recruits, he will spend the first two months closely monitored by Gillis.

“I will know where he is at all times, he won’t really leave my side,” Gillis said.

During the two-tofour-month period, Waters will branch out a bit and take more of the lead.

“After four months, if he’s competent and needs little guidance then I can sign off and he can work more independently,” Gillis added.

Between the four to six month period Gillis will prepare weekly reports, evaluating Waters’ progress. After six months Waters will sit down with an evaluation board face-to-face for an interview and evaluation.

If he passes that six-month mark, then he will complete his probation period, and be ready to be a fullfledged member of the detachment.

Waters said he enjoyed his training at depot.

He was one of 29 students who graduated on Nov. 10 — seven of the graduates were females.

“I really liked the scenario-based training in the program,” Waters said. “It exposes cadets to common calls to help us learn what we might expect.”

He also loved the fitness aspect of the training.

The students routinely did uniform runs, fully clad, wearing an additional 20 pounds worth of vests and belts with equipment.

When he’s not working he hopes to play soccer and baseball while working in Williams Lake, pastimes he’ll pursue once his belongings arrive from Nova Scotia.

An avid outdoorsman, he is excited about exploring the Cariboo with his wife who has also moved here with him.

Cariboo Festival registration now online Michelle Erlandson Special to Tribune/Advisor For the first time ever, the Cariboo Festival is now offering online registration for the annual festival coming up next spring.

“This is a big step forward for the Cariboo Festival,” says festival president Ann Smith. “It is something we’ve been working towards for a few years now.”

Extensive work has been done to the website and the committee is encouraging participants and the community in general to check out the updated website at www.cariboofestival.ca.

All disciplines including piano, vocal, band, instrumental, speech art and creative writing can all be entered through the website.

Anyone entering the festival is asked to check out the new online registration.

The 2015 syllabus as a standalone document is also available online to assist in the entering process.

Just click onto “Cariboo Festival 2015” on the top of the website, then “Entry 2015” and you will find all the information.

Smith is also encouraging anyone having questions about the new registering process to contact the discipline directors listed in the “Contact” section on the website or within the syllabus who can then assist with the process.

The festival committee members do ask for patience as this is new for them as well.

The Cariboo Festival Society has costs associated with this major upgrade of the website and the inclusion of an online registration process.

Purple Ribbon Campaign The annual Purple Ribbon Campaign is taking place Monday, Dec. 1 to 10 and the Women’s Contact Society is encouraging community members to wear a purple ribbon to help spread the word that violence is not okay.

Cariboo Festival currently receives donations from service clubs, individuals/families and businesses around town and is very grateful for these.

They hope for continued support and new businesses being inspired to participate in promoting the arts.

The new website offers a

unique platform for businesses and service clubs to get their name out there in the community as well.

The website will display all donors names (and logos if applicable) unless donors wish to remain anonymous.

The Cariboo Festival Facebook page will also give shoutout’s to donors.

The festival offers such a wonderful opportunity for students to study the arts and achieve ex-

cellence.

We all know the academic value from musical studies but new research is being produced showing the effects on the brain when music is not only listened to but produced.

The therapeutic value of being an artist and musician has a benefit of mental well being that is so valuable to our community so let’s promote the arts by supporting the Cariboo Festival in whatever way we can.

CCCTA hosts tourism summit in lakecity Stakeholders from across the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast are encouraged to join industry experts in Williams Lake Dec 4-6 for the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association’s Tourism Summit and annual meeting.

Help needed for Winter Carnival Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer An enthusiastic team of volunteers is looking for more volunteers to help stage the lakecity’s first annual Winter Carnival.

The organizing committee is well on the way to firming events for the carnival set for Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015.

Key organizers include event chair Darrick Boyes, mayor elect Walt Cobb, Tovi Pare, Raman Dhillon and Sue Lachance.

“The Williams Lake Winter Carnival will be a weekend of affordable fun and entertainment organized by volunteers to bring the people of our community together to celebrate in a welcoming atmosphere,” Boyes says of their mission statement.

Boyes says the idea of a winter carnival grew out of a small group discussion on what other communities do to chase away the winter blues. The dates Jan. 31/Feb. 1, 2015 seemed the most appropriate given other events happening in the lakecity over the winter.

He says the committee is also working to make the Winter Carnival a truly multicultural event.

“I grew up in a multi-cultural society my whole life and we always struggled with racism and equality and we really need to put all that aside to bring the whole community together for the celebration,” Boyes says.

Boyes expects about 100 volunteers will be needed including team leaders, individual event leaders and volunteers to help the event leaders. People are also needed to help out with fundraising and during the event itself for an hour or two, a day, or even the whole two-day event.

He says they also need help with resources and equipment for the event.

Anyone who might like to help out in any way is invited to come to one of the commit-

sled rides, a charity polar bear swim, music, face painting, and a chili cook-off.

Boyes says the committee came up with about 50 event ideas but narrowed it down to events they knew they could do well. In future years he would like to see even bigger attractions such as hot air balloon rides, and outdoor hockey games.

Raphael Alphonse is lovingly remembered Friends and family from all around B.C. said a loving farewell to Raphael Alphonse during a ceremony held at the Catholic Log Church in Anaham on Monday, Nov. 17.

Father Derrick Cameron officiated.

Ervin Charleyboy read the eulogy and Joan Gentles recited the Cowboy Prayer. Both the eulogy and prayer were delivered in English and Chilcotin.

Raphael was born on Dec. 17, 1928 at Anaham Meadows to Mabel Lee and Charlie Alphonse. He passed away Nov. 12, 2014 in Williams Lake.

Much of Raphael’s upbringing was at Anaham, Anaham Meadow, and Rocky Point.

During his younger years, Raphael had many teachers and mentors such as his grandpa Old Alphonse, his uncle Jimmy Marianne, Henry Petal, and Freddy Gilpin.

Family and friends were fortunate to hear the sad and funny stories that were passed down to him.

On road trips that he enjoyed so much, he would point out land-

marks, place names, historical and sacred sites. He shared stories, legends, and beliefs associated with the sites.

At a young age, Raphael went to school at the Mission and often spoke about the trauma he encountered and witnessed. Although his dad advised him about the Mission, he decided to go because his friend Jack Boyd was going there.

He made life-long friends from the Shuswap nation, and learned many words in Shuswap.

After he completed Grade 3, he decided not to go back.

Years later he went to Dawson Creek with his best friend Pascal Bates to take farrier training. He did not fare well in the written part of the training, but he made up for it in the hands-on aspect of the training.

In spite of the level of his education, Raphael acquired his farrier certificate. On weekends, Raphael enjoyed farrier work in the Chilcotin and Williams Lake area.

His clientele grew, and soon he had to limit his work to the Chilcotin.

Once he left school, Raphael started work

Raphael Alphonse enjoyed his cowboy and rodeo life and sharing stories with his large extended family. at Chilco Ranch, Chezacut, Gang Ranch, and Onward Ranch.

He took great pride in working with and learning from top cowhands, namely Eddy Bambrick. In the mid-1960s he worked for the Alexis Creek Forestry suppression crew. Raphael also harvested and bundled Christmas trees in the Chilcotin, and Cariboo district.

He worked for a short time at Fish Lake. The last employment he had was custodian and maintenance for Anaham School. He retired in 1988.

In 1953 Raphael married the chief’s daughter, Susie Bob. He was annoyed he had to marry twice because they married on a holy day.

he worked and bought a brand new hand sewing machine for his wife. As a wedding present the chief gave them a few head of cows to start off their cattle ranching.

To supplement their income, they trapped in their traditional territory.

Together, Raphael and Susie had seven children: Florence, Bella, Faye, Karen, Melvin, and twins Carla and Carl. They also raised their granddaughter Sharmon.

He brought us up to be who we are, and we will honour him with highest regard.

Today, we do our best to “be on the ball” and “to be three jumps ahead” as he taught us.

Back in the day, the hereditary chief and councillors appointed policemen in the community. They were called “nilhghgil.”

Johnny Stump and Raphael were the last appointed nilhghil of Anaham Reserve.

Raphael wondered when the band would retire him as a policeman, but it eventually died out and it never happened.

Through the years Raphael kept a diary starting from 1960. He rarely missed a day.

We still have those diaries. Shortly after the electricity came into Anaham, Raphael brought home a gramophone and his collection of records began.

He loved music, and he loved to dance. As children, during leisure times, he would let us stand on his feet and he would two-step or do the polka with us.

He believed when you go to a dance you “danced into the dance hall” and when you are leaving, “you would dance out.”

They were invited to Lee’s Corner to attend square dances. One of his friends was wearing work boots and stepped on someone’s toes.

As Raphael puts it, we were never invited there again.

During his younger years, Raphael’s only means of transportation was on a saddle horse.

Later on, he bought himself a 1967 Honda motorbike. It was a treat for everyone, when they would get rides.

Soon he started rounding up horses with it too.

In 1968, accompanied by Elmer Alphonse, Raphael went to Vancouver.

He came back with his first truck, a 1968 GMC pickup. They were escorted out of Vancouver by taxi.

Shortly after, he got his driver’s license.

As a young man, Raphael got into playing hockey, often competing against Alexis Creek and Big Creek teams.

They had to make

their own hockey equipment. In the 1970s he coached and volunteered with the Athabaskans and brought them to hockey tournaments.

He loved the sport of rodeo, especially calf roping and team roping.

Many cowboys will remember he was pickup man. Travelling and competing in rodeo was his greatest passion and he made many friends all over.

Raphael also raised a few rodeo bucking horses.

Working with horses was his passion in life.

Not that long ago, Raphael broke his last horse. A few years ago he made a suicide race track just above Anaham.

A family member thought he had gone crazy and worried he was going to kill himself going down that hill. We felt that at least he would die doing what he loved to do.

Later on he got into turkey shooting and his gun collection began.

A group of youth watched him target shoot and fondly named him “Good Shot Raphael.”

At funerals and social events Raphael also enjoyed directing and coaching lahal games.

Chilcotin provided rich social life Hunting was another favourite pastime for Raphael and he enjoyed revisiting old hunting and fishing grounds. When families lost a loved one he provided moose or deer meat.

Raphael loved to entertain and enjoyed sharing with others.

He taught us to feed people when they came to visit.

His home was always open and he enjoyed visiting and welcoming others into his home.

Raphael was a child at heart. Many will remember the games he played with them, racing horses, playing cards, wrestling, boxing, and playing lahal.

He was so proud of family members when they competed and excelled at track meets, dance competitions, hockey and rodeo.

Many people will remember when he “baptized” them with a new nickname. It was rather cute when a new generation of kids came to visit to get a name.

The last few years,

Raphael was not able to ride horses like he used to. He believed that riding horses kept you healthy and fit.

His health was slowly declining and he started having problems with his knee and hip.

It was devastating for him when he was not able to ride.

Not that long ago, he was diagnosed as having early stages of dementia. He would get memory losses, which was frustrating for him.

As a result, he tended to isolate himself.

We thank family and friends for being patient and standing by him, regardless of all that.

Most recently, Raphael attended just about every funeral and it was hard for him, but he went there to support grieving families.

Thank you to family members for making his last days as comfortable as possible by taking him places and to social events. A few weeks ago, family took him to Dog Creek to attend a funeral.

a hard time getting around.

He felt that he did not want to burden anyone with his health going down.

River Kings hand Stamps first loss Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Terrace River Kings played the spoilers Saturday night, handing the Williams Lake Stampeders their first loss of the season in a 9-6 road victory.

In a Coy Cup rematch from last year, roughly 600 fans at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex went home stunned as a three-goal outburst from the River Kings in the third period allowed Terrace to prevail.

Williams Lake — who were hosting their annual food drive for the Salvation Army — never played with a lead in the contest, as Terrace struck first and continued to be one step ahead of the Stampeders throughout,

outshooting the home team 37 to 24.

Four Terrace players had three-point nights, including Ben Reinbolt (1-2-3), Chapen Leblond (1-2-3), Steve Cullis (12-3) and Jordan Peddle (3-0-3).

For the Stampeders Nathan Zurak (1-4-5), Matt Lees (2-3-5) and Stuart Sasges (2-3-5) — the game’s second star — each tallied five points.

The River Kings opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the first period as Josh Murray opened the scoring on Stampeders’ netminder Justin Foote.

The Stampeders retaliated moments later as Sasges scored the first of his two markers on River Kings’ goaltender Devon Ames.

From there the two clubs

traded goals, before Terrace extended its lead to 7-5 midway through the final frame.

Zurak cut the deficit to one nine seconds later, however, the River Kings responded in the final four minutes with two unanswered goals to close out the period with the 9-6 win.

The Stampeders are now 9-10 on the season, and have an eight-point lead on the secondplace Quesnel Kangaroos (5-50) in the Central Interior Hockey League East Division.

In the West Division the River Kings extended their first-place lead over the Smithers Steelheads (4-3-0) improving to 7-10.

The Stampeders now have a rare weekend off in its 16-game regular season before travelling

south to face the Lac La Hache Tomahawks in back-to-back games on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena. Game times are 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

AROUND THE LEAGUE In the other East Division tilts of the weekend the Lac La Hache Tomahawks (3-5-0) edged the Quesnel Kangaroos 5-4 on Saturday night on home ice, before falling 11-6 the following day to the River Kings.

The other West Division matchups saw the Smithers Steelheads upend the Prince Rupert Rampage (1-7-1) 8-2 and 5-3 in their Saturday and Sunday meetings.

To mark this year’s RBC Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport, the City of Williams Lake is hosting free family swim lessons at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

These lessons will teach families basic swimming and drowning prevention skills. Following the lessons families will be invited to stay for games, a movie and a snack from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. KidSport, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club, Pregnancy Outreach and the Child Development Centre will provide information on their organizations in the complex lobby.

Cross Country Ski Club Open House The Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club is hosting an open house this Saturday, Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Williams Lake Library.

There will be light refreshments, along with giving an opportunity to register for the upcoming season, as well as to find out more about the club, including its Jackrabbits youth program, its new horseshoe trail and about the club’s new grooming equipment.

Lakecity powerlifter Blair Fisher recently competed at the World Association of Bench Press and Deadlifters World Championships in Las Vegas Nov. 18-23.

Fisher, in the 50-64 masters men’s class, put forward a successful 573-pound lift in his first attempt and a 628-pound successful second lift.

He missed his third attempt, however, still set another Canadian record in the process and walked away with first place.

Blue Fins give best showing at Moose Meet Twenty-eight swimmers from the Williams Lake Blue Fins combined to finish second place in team scoring last weekend at the club’s first big meet of the year — the Prince George Moose Meet.

“This was the best team results the Blue Fins have had at this meet and every swimmer was a contributor with amazing success,” said Blue Fins’ head coach Chad Webb.

“With over 80 per cent team best times, the entire team raced their way to some impressive results from every swimmer.”

Austin Boehm, Cole Turner and Andrew Haseldine had a breakout meet taking off an impressive amount of time off their swims.

“Cole almost made ‘AA’ provincials which is extremely impressive considering he is fairly new to the sport,” Webb said.

Landon Christensen narrowly missed making ‘AA’ provincials in a pair of events, and will now focus his efforts on qualifying in two weeks in Kamloops.

Taylor Fitzgerald, meanwhile, had a strong meet posting her first ‘AA’ time in the 100-metre backstroke by winning the event and adding solid swims in other events.

Maya Nowotny took more than three minutes off her individual races, while Gracie Frost bettered her times and walked away with two firsts and six seconds, plus a ‘AAA’ provincial time in the 200-metre butterfly.

Webb said relay teams were more than impressive as the 10-and-under girls were second in both relays consisting of Fitzgerald, Claire Brown, Abby Webb and Grace Turner on the medley relay and Brooklyn Carriere on the free team.

The other 10-andunder girls team placed fifth in the free relay consisting of Maya, Gabrielle Knox, Turner and Claire Munroe in

The 11- and 12-yearold girls relay team of Isabelle Knox, Shaylee Syewart, Keanna Saunders and Frost won the medley relay and narrowly finished second in the free relays.

The 13- and 14-yearold boys team of Cole Turner, Liam McCreight, Landon Christensen and Austin Boehm (in the medley relay) and Lucas Nowotny swam to second place.

In the 15-and-over girls division Danika Robson, Kelsey Blockland, Dana Rook (free relay), Kara Zavitz (medley relay), Coral Choi and Madison Blusson (medley relay) came third in the free relay and second in the medley relay.

Top-eight performances are as follows: Cole Turner: second in 50 back and 50 breast; third in 50 free and 100 free; fourth in 50 fly, fifth in 100 IM, sixth in 100 back.

TEAM LEADER, ABORIGINAL CHILD & YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH Denisiqi Services Society is a delegated agency under the Child, Family and Community Services Act serving six Tsilhqot’in Nations and one Carrier Nation located West of Williams Lake, BC. Our Child & Youth Mental Health Program provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment services to children, youth and their families when the child or youth is experiencing serious emotional, psychological, or behavioural disorders. Staff within this program currently includes a Wellness Coordinator and two Development Clinicians, and we are seeking a Team Leader to further support and develop this program.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Team Leader will administer child and youth mental health services by providing direction, leadership and supervision to professional staff on the Child & Youth Mental Health team. In this role, you will have the authority, accountability and responsibility to plan, develop, manage, coordinate and evaluate the delivery of mental health services for Aboriginal children, youth and their families in Williams Lake and the surrounding area.

You will work with diverse community partners and seven Aboriginal Bands to promote the establishment and maintenance of a full range of mental health services within the community.

As the Team Leader for our Child & Youth Mental Health Team, you must possess the following: •
